UNITED WAY RECEIVES CAUSEWAY DONATION By Kaarina Romero, Causeway We are happy to continue, due to overwhelming community response, with our 2020 campaign – “CauseWheels” Monthly Vehicle Donation Program - to help our neighbors and positively impact Ocean County. In 2019, Causeway had two requests for vehicle donations to local nonprofit organizations. We were able to accommodate each of these requests. This prompted an idea to follow up 2019’s 50th Anniversary $10,000 Monthly Grant program. We are proud to announce our May winner, United Way of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. About United Way of Monmouth and Ocean Counties United Way of Monmouth and Ocean Counties (UWMOC) is a local nonprofit based out of Wall Township that has served our community for over 50 years. Originally founded in 1967 as United Way of Monmouth County, UWMOC was formed in 2016 by a merger with United Way of Ocean County (founded in 1969). The two United Ways had always worked closely together, especially rebuilding homes that were

resources in order to better fulfill the organization’s mission. United Way serves the residents of both counties equally by building initiatives that address common goals. UWMOC’s mission is to bridge the gaps to education, financial stability and health for every person in Monmouth and Ocean counties. In the wake of the pandemic, this work has never been more important. United Way is unparalleled in its power to convene partners, providers, volunteers and resources to address the needs of communities in crisis, much like it did in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. COVID-19 has been a new and unexpected challenge for everyone, but United Way was built for this. COVID-19 Response & Donation Drives

In April 2020, UWMOC organized a COVID-19 Recovery Fund to address the unmet needs of our community caused by this crisis. Thanks to generous donations from individuals, corporations and virtual fundraisers, United Way distributed grants to a total of 11 local organizations. These funds enabled some nonprofits to reopen and adhere to safety protocols, and also helped 512 households financially impacted by COVID-19 with their basic needs. In addition to funds raised to support our community, UWMOC coordinates donation drives through its Volunteer Center to help ensure that our residents’ basic needs are being met. United Way is bridging the gaps to non-food household supplies that are not available to purchase through government aid such as SNAP, including paper goods and diapers. Drives for senior comfort bags, books and winter coats also help alleviate the basic needs of our neighbors.
The vans donated to United Way will be used to deliver donations like these senior comfort bags to Meals on Wheels of Ocean County. Pictured is Jim Sigurdson, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels.
Once again, we want to send out a HUGE thank you to our friends Meals on Wheels of Ocean County. Executive Director Jim Sigurdson has now donated NINE vehicles to Causeway. Jim knows we will find the perfect non-profit that will put each vehicle to good use. UWMOC held its 2020 Warmest Wishes Coat Drive to provide coats to local youth. Over 6,300 winter outerwear and holiday items – including 2,669 coats – were given to schools throughout our region to help keep kids warm over the winter months. In addition to hosting the Warmest Wishes Coat Drive, UWMOC was also a partner in “Operation Warm Up Jersey Shore”. Thanks to the South
Jersey Funder Collaborative that included the Causeway Family of Dealerships, 3,200 children in Ocean and Monmouth counties received new coats for the winter. The vehicles generously donated by Meals on Wheels of Ocean County and the Causeway Family of Dealerships will help facilitate and expand these drives by giving UWMOC a safe and reliable way to pick up and deliver donations of various items to our neighbors in need.

HACKENSACK OR ADMINISTRATORS DELIVERED A WEBINAR ON ROBOTIC SURGERY BEST PRACTICES On April 20, 2021, two Hackensack University Medical Center nurses delivered a webinar sponsored by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) on establishing a Center of Excellence for the Quadruple Aim. The Quadruple Aim is a healthcare performance optimization framework that promotes four goals, including improved population health, an enhanced patient experience, reduced costs, and enhanced job satisfaction for providers.
Terri Freguletti, MAS, RN, CNOR, Vice President of Perioperative Services at Hackensack University Medical Center, and Vivian Kufour, RN, BSN, CNOR, Clinical Nurse Coordinator for Robotic Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center, were invited to deliver the webinar in recognition of the successful implementation of enhancements that promote the Quadruple Aim in Hackensack University Medical Center operating rooms, which offer 24/7 robotic surgery. Hackensack University Medical Center was the first hospital in the world to provide patients with 24/7 access to robotic surgery across all specialties for both scheduled and acute procedures. Hackensack University Medical Center surgeons have performed more than 31,000 robotic surgery procedures in 21 years, making the hospital’s operating room teams among the most experienced in the world. Freguletti and Kufour have spoken at
various national conferences to discuss nursing best practices for training, scheduling, and continuing education related to 24/7 robotic surgery. These best practices support the Quadruple Aim by promoting community health, enhancing patient outcomes, promoting efficiency and cost effectiveness, and increasing job satisfaction for operating room nurses. “At most hospitals, surgical robots are only utilized for scheduled surgeries — and when the surgeon and operating room nurses go home, the robot is also done for the day,” said Freguletti. “At Hackensack University Medical Center, if a patient comes into the ER on a holiday, evening, or weekend, all of our operating room nurses are fully trained to use the robot in the operating room.” “Data shows that patients who have robotic surgery have a shorter length of stay, less blood loss, fewer complications, and a faster recovery when compared to traditional open surgery,” said Kufour. “As part of our commitment to the Quadruple Aim, we wanted to ensure that every patient — including those who need acute surgery — have access to robotic surgery, and that all of our operating room nurses are fully trained and have the opportunity to participate in paid continuing education on robotic surgery.”

HACKENSACK HOURGLASS MEMORIAL DEDICATION PAYS TRIBUTE TO LIVES LOST DUE TO COVID-19 On April 26, 2021, Hackensack Meridian Hackensack University Medical Center dedicated an Hourglass Memorial to pay tribute to those who lost their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic. The ceremony, which took place in the Max McGuire Memorial Garden, provided a time of reflection for patients, visitors and team members.
When passing by the memorial, located in a special display case located outside the Hekemian Conference Center, individuals will not only remember those who have lost their lives, but will also remember that, even during times of sorrow, time is a precious gift that is not to be wasted. “The COVID-19 pandemic has affected each of us in different ways, creating new and unprecedented challenges, and sadly, many of us have been faced with perhaps the most difficult and unimaginable challenge of all — coping with the loss of a colleague, friend, or family member,” said Mark Sparta, president and chief hospital executive, Hackensack University Medical Center, during his remarks at the ceremony. “However, even during these dark times, there were glimmers of hope. Both inside the hospital and in the community, people joined together to fight a common and unseen enemy. Together, we mourned our losses, but we also celebrated our victories, no matter how big or small.”
The Hourglass Memorial The highlight of the ceremony was the dedication of the Hourglass Memorial, which is a powerful symbol of the passage of time and has a different meaning for every individual. “For those that lost loved ones, the hourglass may be a symbol of a life cut too short by COVID-19. However, it also symbolizes that this challenging time will eventually pass,” remarked Ihor Sawczuk, MD, regional president, Northern Market, Hackensack Meridian Health. “It also reminds us of the time we spent with those we loved and lost. And finally, it reminds us to appreciate and enjoy the time we still have with those we love.”
This year’s Beanstack Challenge book selection for the program is a poetry collection, An American Sunrise by Joy Harjo. Each passage reflects on the lands that Harjo’s Mvskoke ancestors once inhabited in what is now Oklahoma, and the abundance that her homeland still produces. Explore indigenous music with Cliff Matias at 6 PM Wednesday, May 19. Registrants will receive a Zoom link to the discussion of historic instruments that are still used today for ceremonies and celebrations. Furry Friends Who Need Fur-Ever Homes!
Trina is a very sweet 4 to 5 year old hound mix. She has a lovely personality, enjoys being with our volunteers and just loves her walks. She was one of two dogs in a home and she did not like the advances of the male dog. Unfortunately she had never been spayed and this may have been the reason for the difficulties. She would make a great family pet especially a family aware of the characteristics of a hound breed.
Congratulations Southern Regional Girls Volleyball player Adriana Conforti on her commitment to continue her education and Volleyball careers at Chatham University in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Adriana is surrounded by her parents, Coach Kelsey Gesicki and Head Coach Eric Maxwell. Best of Luck!

The Friends are still looking for the purrfect home for this sweet, bonded pair who were harvested from a colony while young. We felt they were young enough to give them a chance for comfort and love indoors with a family. Sigi, a female, and Sinclair, a male are now 5 months old. This bonded pair are both orange and white. They have come a long way in their foster home. They like to play together and sleep together. Sigi is more confident than her brother Sinclair so they will need to be adopted together so Sigi can help Sinclair acclimate to a new home.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO GRADUATE!
By Kelly Lyn ReibsameDenelsbeck
Like many of us, I finished up high school with the intention of going to college as my parents had wanted. And I tried. But after only one semester, I dropped out. I went from a straight-A honor student in high school to a failing college drop out. I needed a break, so I went to vocational school and became a licensed nail technician. I spent 12 years in a nail salon creating beautiful nails with amazing artwork. Burn-out set in and it was time for a change. But where do you go when you have not finished college and your only experience is in a nail salon? A friend was working at a busy car dealership and needed an assistant. His boss asked him that exact question: “What does she have to offer? She does nails”. It was just as
13 years at the dealership, but I once again decided that it was time for a change.
I had feared; a recent college graduate was hired instead. She lasted only three months. My friend convinced his boss to take a chance on me, and my opportunity arose. I was hired to do filing and data entry, but I did not even know how to turn on a computer. With a little training, I began to excel. I was never satisfied with just sitting back and doing the bare minimum; I always wanted to do more. So, I continued to learn everything that I could, taking on any task that someone was willing to teach me. As the time progressed, I decided it was finally time to go back to school. It is never too late to learn. So, after my divorce, at 33 years old, I went back to Ocean County College and completed my associates degree by 2008. During that time, I was promoted to parts manager at the dealership. My hard work was paying
Kelly Lyn Reibsame-Denelsbeck off. I had a great job with benefits, and there was always something to learn. I even met my second husband there (he
was our tire delivery driver). But the days were long and there was very little time for other interests. I spent a total of
In the fall of 2015, at 41 years old, I was entering my third career. I knew that it would not be easy, after all, I was taking a huge pay cut since I was taking an entry level position. But, again, it is never too late to learn something new, and I was ready. I started working for a nonprofit, and it was one of the best moves I ever could have made. For me it was not about the money. My husband, however, was not happy about it at all. He supported my decision, but he made it well known that he was not thrilled about the change in pay. Soon he began to see a change in me. I was happier, less stressed, and I now had time to enjoy some hobbies and volunteer with my church. I was happier than I had been in a long time, but something was still missing. Yes, you guessed it, it was time to go back to school again. I love my job and have no intention of leaving, but the desire to finish what I had started just after high school was too great to ignore. Once again, I got a little resistance from my husband. He asked, “Why do you want to spend all that money when you have no intention of leaving your current job? How are you going to pay it off?” I have not figured that part out yet, but that is okay. Going back to school was not a decision that I made by myself, something greater was leading me. I was listening to K-Love radio, a Christian radio station, and they had a scholarship contest that I felt drawn to enter. I did not win, but I spoke to an amazing young woman who walked me through the decision process, and in January 2018 I started my journey with Colorado Christian University. This time, college was different. My studies
were completely online. This required a focus and dedication that was very different from my previous college experiences. Going back to school in your forties when you are working full time, taking care of a house, fitting in time with family, and juggling a part-time side gig takes a lot out of you. I rarely went to bed before 11:30pm and was up for work at 5:30 every day during the week. I often found myself falling asleep on the couch just after dinner, but that little nap got me through my school hours. Fighting my urge to procrastinate was a challenge as well. Luckily, I work well under pressure. The entire journey was a challenge, but one that I would not change. It is not easy to go back to school after so many years away from it. I expected it to take me two years to obtain my bachelor’s degree; three and a half years later I finally did it. It is now May of 2021 and I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in business administration graduating near the top of my class with magna cum laude honors. At 47 years old I could not be prouder of myself. I did it. It was not easy, and it took a lot of dedication and sacrifice, but I did it and you can too. You are never too old to learn; do not let anyone tell you otherwise. If you set your mind to it, you can do anything that you want to. Do not let anything hold you back. If you have the determination, you will find a way. I still do not know how I am paying off my loans, but like everyone else with student loans, I will find a way. I did not do this to leave my job and find something better, I did not do it for the recognition, I did not do it for anyone else, I did it for me. It may have taken me almost 30 years since high school, but I faced the challenge and persevered. You can too.

PREP YOUR GRILL FOR A SIZZLING SEASON If you cook with a charcoal grill, make sure to remove any residual ashes, says Octavius Nelson, owner of Bobby’s BBQ in Fountain Inn, South Carolina.
By Samantha Lande, AARP As the weather warms up and people spend more time gathering outdoors, it’s time for grilling. But before you throw your meat (or veggies) on the fire, take some time to optimize your grill for the season. Just like anything that hasn’t been used in a while, the equipment you rely on to create sizzling outdoor meals could benefit from a good tune-up. Whether you’re a gas or charcoal griller or prefer your meat on a smoker, two pitmasters share their tips on how to keep your grill in tiptop shape all season long.
“A lot of people leave the ashes in there and cook on top of them next time, but that can rust out your grill box,” he says. “It’s best to remove the charcoals after every use, once the grill cools down.” 3. Prep your grill grates food taste better. Rob Serritella, founder and pitmaster at Los Angeles’ Holy Cow BBQ, has a whole process for cleaning the grill.
1. Deep clean the grates
To start, if you have a gas grill, make sure the gas is off.
Make sure you’re starting the season with a clean surface for grilling. Taking the time to do a proper cleaning in the beginning will go a long way, wiping away the grime that may have built up if you left your grill dormant most of the winter. A clean surface will make your
Remove your grill grates (if you can) and place them on a surface for cleaning. If your model doesn’t have removable grates, it likely has a tray underneath to catch debris that is removable and cleanable. Most people line these trays with aluminum foil for easy cleaning.
Use gloves and goggles (to block flying debris) and fill a tub with hot water and dish soap. After a good soak, scrape off the debris. If dish soap doesn’t do the trick, try oven cleaner. Rinse with hot water and air dry. 2. Get out all the gunk “Use a putty knife, brush and skewers to get all of last year’s ‘gunk’ out,” Serritella says. That includes the inside cover, sides and bottom of the grill. This will make sure that nothing burns off right onto your food.
Soak a few old dish towels in the hot water and dish soap solution and wipe down all areas of the grill. Then spray the inside top of the grill with a solution of 1/3 vinegar to 2/3 water. Think of this like cleaning a dirty pan before you are ready to use it to cook. Let sit for at least a half hour, then wipe down the inside and outside of the grill with warm water, to remove any of the leftover char from last year, dirt that may have blown in or bugs that were trapped.
Once you’ve done a deep clean, it’s time to prep your grill. Nelson recommends oiling the grates of the grill to counteract any rust that may have built up. “If you’re an experienced griller, put some cooking oil on a towel after your grill is hot and rub the grates to wipe it down,” he says, “If you’re more of a beginner, take the grates off your grill before you light it, and rub the oil on them cold. Then put them back on, heat up your grill and use a grill brush to clean them off.” Grillers can also do a pre-burn
with the oil grates for about 10 minutes before cleaning, to burn off any excess, Serritella says. 4. Cover it up Grills are made to withstand the elements, but getting a cover and protecting your equipment between uses will prevent the need for frequent heavy-duty cleaning.
YOUR BEST DECISION AFTER A COLLISION
If you’re using a gas grill, check that your tank is full — you don’t want to run out of gas midway through flipping burgers or chicken.

5. Check your supplies Now that your grill is in tip-top shape, make sure the rest of your supplies are as well. For chip or pellet grills, Serritella suggests removing any unused fuel from last season in your barbecue or smoker and replacing it with a fresh, dry batch to prevent moisture or bugs from tainting your cooking efforts. The same goes for charcoal or presoaked charcoal — start with a fresh bag.

DONNA’S ANGELS THANKS CAUSEWAY’S KINDNESS
Donna’s Angels is a local Community Outreach and assistance non-profit. They help families in our community that are struggling with: food and clothing insecurity, in need of basic household items and furniture, and small handyman repairs or handicap bathroom updates due to age or illness. Along with assistance with post-surgery supplies such as crutches, canes or other items their insurance doesn’t cover. Wellness, nutrition and safety of their clients is their top priority! Donna’s Angels was assisting a family who had moved to New Jersey from Tennessee, when the woman’s mother was dying of cancer. During that time the woman also had her baby prematurely. This left the family ill-prepared for the arrival of their child, Abel. Donna’s Angels and the community responded with EVERYTHING little Abel needed to start a beautiful life. The one wish the father had was a safer car with heat to take his baby boy to doctor appointments. The family’s 2004 Honda needed so many
repairs that it was practically unsalvageable. The founder of the charity, Donna Carlson, had read in the Causeway Gazette about their donation of vehicles to local nonprofits. An angel on her shoulder told her to walk over to Causeway Ford building to see if Joe Stroffilino was in and if she could talk to him about the family’s vehicle. As luck would have it he was in. They had a wonderful conversation about family, their mutual causes, and connections in the community. Within days Joe contacted Donna to let her know that the Wintrode family and Causeway were going to donate a car to help the family, a 2012 white Nissan Versa! The family is so extremely thankful and grateful for the car. They said, “It was the nicest car they had ever had!” So, thank you Causeway and the Wintrode family for this wonderful donation and program. It really restores faith in the community that strangers really do care. So Donna’s Angel’s thank you for your donation. Everyone is eternally grateful.

LINCOLN AVIATOR GRAND TOURING AMONG AUTOTRADER’S 10 BEST ELECTRIC CARS FOR 2021 Lincoln Aviator, already heralded for its effortless power and capability, aviation-inspired design and serene cabin, adds a new award to its trophy case. The Aviator Grand Touring plug-in hybrid is one of Autotrader’s 10 Best Electric Cars for 2021. “The Lincoln Aviator is a gold standard when it comes to plug-in hybrids,” said Brian Moody, executive editor for Autotrader. “With an EPA-estimated all-electric range of 21 miles, it performs
well and accomplishes most daily tasks without ever needing the gasoline engine.” “The Aviator Grand Touring also hits the mark when it comes to two things electric vehicle buyers seem to want more and more – luxury and performance,” he added. “The Aviator Grand Touring is an unbelievably quick SUV and, like all Lincolns, the interior and exterior are crafted to a higher standard than other luxury SUVs.”
Autotrader highlights Aviator Grand Touring’s impressive driving performance and its plug-in hybrid powertrain generating 494 horsepower and 630 lb.ft. of torque. As a three-row midsize SUV, the Aviator offers a spacious cabin with signature features that offer the entire family a quiet and comfortable sanctuary.

WHAT IS HONDA SENSING? AND WHICH SUVS, CARS, AND TRUCKS HAVE IT?
Active safety tech is now more widely available than ever before, and that might be the best reason to buy a new car today. Whereas features like automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control were once limited to hightech luxury flagships like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, those features are now standard on a base Honda Civic LX starting under $23,000. These advanced features are included as part of the Honda Sensing collection of driver assist active safety and convenience features. Keep reading for everything you need to know about Honda Sensing features and which Hondas have them.
CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED • Up to Two Complimentary Oil Changes Within the First Year of Ownership • Manufacturer-backed Comprehensive Limited Warranty Coverage • Vehicle Inspection Report • Roadside Assistance • SiriusXm Complimentary for First 90 Days • Concierge Service
Every vehicle with Honda Sensing includes six features, which can be grouped together in pairs. First you have the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS in Honda speak), also called automatic emergency braking, with Forward Collision Warning (FCW). Sensors on the front of the vehicle can detect when you’re rapidly approaching another vehicle or a pedestrian in a way that may result in a collision, which triggers an audible and visual alert to the driver with a prompt to hit the brakes. If you don’t brake soon enough yourself, the system uses emergency braking to prevent or mitigate a collision.

No trip is “too far” when it comes to our customers! Last month I had a customer that found a specific car he wanted on Causeway’s website and put in an inquiry. That next morning, I got assigned to help and worked the deal over the phone with my manager, Ken Jeranek. Less than 48 hours after the initial lead, we made the deal and got the vehicle ready for delivery. I made the trip all the way up to Buffalo, New York. My customer was thrilled, and so was I! There is no better feeling than making my customers happy and satisfied with their purchase! I wish Adrien of Buffalo, New York many safe and happy travels in his gorgeous 2019 BMW 440i!

HYUNDAI LANDS TWO VEHICLES ON PRESTIGIOUS KBB LIST
Hyundai has received two Cost to Own awards by Kelley Blue Book (KBB) for its Venue subcompact SUV and all-new Elantra for a second year in a row. The tenth annual KBB 5-Year Cost to Own Awards recognize new vehicles with the lowest projected ownership costs over the initial five-year ownership period. Purchase price being only one of the many costs associated with vehicle ownership. Once shoppers consider the ongoing costs of fuel, insurance, maintenance and more, the overall financial picture can change
significantly from model to model. “Listening to customer data has allowed us to deliver products that meet consumer needs while also providing superior financial benefit. The Elantra and Venue’s being awarded by KBB to their annual 5-Year Cost to Own, reinforces our commitment in successfully addressing the full cost of vehicle ownership experience,” said Ricky Lao, director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor North America. “In a very hotly contested
segment where the winning margin was less than $100, the Elantra earned Kelley Blue Book’s 5-Year Cost to Own Award through its superior fuel economy and significantly lower repair costs,” said Eric Ibara, director of residual values for Kelley Blue Book. “In only its second year, the Venue wins in the Subcompact SUV/Crossover category for having low costs in every category, but especially for its expected low repair costs.” Kelley Blue Book 5-Year Cost to Own information is developed using Kelley Blue
