By Kaitlyn Causeway
Strohmeier,
The Causeway Family of Dealerships sends out huge congratulations to Deborah Dec! Deborah won a brand new 2021 Ford Mach-E Premium at Fulfill’s Inaugural Golf Outing Event “Drive Out Hunger” back on June 21st. This Ford Mustang Mach-E was donated to Fulfill by Board Member Dave Wintrode and The Causeway Family of Dealerships. With the raffles sold from this event, Fulfill raised 100,000 dollars! For every dollar, Fulfill can provide three meals. This means they raised enough money to provide 300,000 meals for people in need! Winner Deborah Dec has been a donor to Fulfill since 2009 and she donates every month. She’s involved in multiple organizations, such as the Hope Center, Family Promise, Holiday Express, Soroptimist International of the Central Jersey Coast, and CONTACT of Ocean and Monmouth Counties.

NEW JERSEY IS ONE OF THE TOP 10 BEST STATES FOR TEEN DRIVERS By Jen Ursillo, wobm.com
Summer is the most popular season for teenagers to get their driver’s licenses, according to personal-finance website WalletHub. It has released its report on 2021’s “Best and Worst States for Teen Drivers.” To determine the safest and least costly driving environments for teens, WalletHub analyst Jill Gonzalez said it compared all 50 states across 23 key metrics, ranging from the number of teen driver fatalities, to the
average cost of car repairs to the presence of impaired-driving laws.
New Jersey is one of the top 10 best states for teen drivers, coming in at number 10, Gonzalez said. New Jersey does well when it comes to safety. It has most of the optimal graduated licensing provisions. It has one of the oldest ages that teens are even able to drive, which helps with teen driver fatalities. New Jersey has a low number of teen driver fatalities. That’s why this study is done in the summer because that’s when the most
Lacrosse
teen driver fatalities happen, Gonzalez said. There are also fewer teen-under-the-influence traffic violations, and lower amounts of teen drinking and driving and texting.
But even with all this good news, New Jersey has one area where it could use some work. She said it could do better when it comes to its economic environment.
A lot of this has to happen with the driving laws in place, where New Jersey also ranks very well in terms of stricter laws and simply more of them than other states, she added.
Also it’s crazy expensive to add a teen driver to a parent’s insurance policy. In New Jersey, the premium increase is the highest in the country, almost 75 times more expensive to add a teen driver to a parent’s policy in the state, than it is in Oregon, Montana and even next door in Pennsylvania, Gonzalez stressed.
“New Jersey ranks number one when it comes to impaired-driving laws which is why I think we see such low numbers in terms of fatalities,” Gonzalez said.

Sadie is a very sweet and loving girl! She is an active, young girl who would do best with a family or owners who have the time to give her lots of exercise! At one year of age, she will require her owner’s time and attention to turn into the great dog she is capable of becoming. As she moves toward three years of age, Sadie will grow into that mellow, easy to be with canine companion you have been seeking. Sadie is a Boxer and Terrier mix so she is bright and eager to please. Sadie knows several commands already including sit, paw, and come. How far could you take this bright girl with the beautiful eyes and markings? Seeking a bromance? Ibra is your boy! A handsome Shepherd and Terrier mix, he is an active and energetic fellow! He loves to play, and would do best with a family or owner willing to give him the exercise he needs as he works his way through puppyhood. He is only one or two so lots of love and training in these formative years will produce one super companion. Ibra is a big boy so experience with larger breeds would be a real plus. Ibra has lived with other dogs before, but might prefer a home without cats. His lineage suggests he will be a very bright young pup and will keep you on your toes!
Congratulations Southern Regional Football Taylor Munt on his commitment to continue his education and football careers at Stevenson University in Maryland.

OCEAN COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT CHANGING LOCATIONS FOR VACCINE SHOTS
By Vin Ebenau, WOBM
More people have been getting vaccinated and those who haven’t yet still have the opportunities to do so, but at a couple different locations in Ocean County. The Ocean County Health Department announced on Thursday that the vaccination clinics at Southern Regional Middle School in Manahawkin and at the RWJ-Barnabas Health Arena in Toms River are closed and being replaced with two new locations to get your shots. “The large sites which could accommodate thousands of vaccinations daily have served us well, and we are very appreciative that Toms River Regional School District and Southern Regional School District stepped up without hesitation and provided their

CHEF’S TASTING ON THE BAY YOUR BEST DECISION
A Need We Feed is very excited to announce their main event is coming back. The Chef’s Tasting on the Bay returns this October and the event will feature 20 of the top restaurants in Ocean and Monmouth County who will be offering up their most popular and famous entrée items for attendees to enjoy.
At the last event, guests enjoyed pan seared scallops from Chef Mike’s ABG, crab cakes from Bum Rogers, Ahi Tuna from Ohana Grill, Burger 25’s famous milk shakes and burgers, just to name a few. At the tasting event, each restaurant will have a table serving up samplings of their specialty items. Once you have filled your plate, you will be able to walk out to the beautiful tiki deck on the Barnegat Bay, where you will enjoy fabulous food, take in the scenic beauty and be entertained by Johnny and The Brue Crew. Guests can also order up their favorite Tiki drink at the Martell’s Waters Edge outdoor bar. What makes this perfect day even more incredible is that all the proceeds will go to A Need We Feed. These proceeds will be used to purchase freshly prepared, packaged, nutrious meals that will be delivered to our local veterans, homebound seniors, children and their families who are in need. A Need We Feed is a grass roots organization created from the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The founder, Cliff Baker who served in the US Navy, saw the opportunity to pay it forward to all the military, police, and first responders by offering a hot meal on Thanksgiving Day to those helping to restore the New Jersey Shore instead

From this first meal of 350, it grew to 600 meals served at Christmas. Once the word began to spread, the organization quickly grew to preparing and delivering an average of 1,400 meals on Easter, 4th of July BBQ, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. During Christmas, A Need We Feed also runs toy drives for all the children and teens who otherwise would not receive presents. On Easter, the organization includes an Easter basket that is made from donations and packaged from A Need We Feed volunteers. When Covid hit in March of 2020 completely shutting down the restaurant and food service industry, Cliff Baker, Board President, who supplies local restaurants with their equipment and supplies for Singer Equipment Co., saw another opportunity. This time to help the industry that had provided him a livelihood for the last 27 years. The A Need We Feed team quickly switched gears to raising money for the struggling restaurants as a life line to help them stay in business. As a result, A Need We Feed was able to raise nearly $300,000.00 and purchase 27,000 meals that were then delivered to our veterans in distress, our homebound seniors, children and families who were in need. THEY GIVE US BUTTERFLIES Happy July everyone! My name is Danielle Natale and I am a Sales Consultant at Causeway Honda. I very much wanted to share a subject close to my heart. Since childhood, I have always had a fascination with butterflies. My Mom always called me her “butterfly girl” because they would just land on me out of nowhere or I would just catch them in midair. About ten years ago I found these vibrant and beautiful caterpillars on my parsley plants. Yes parsley! I did some research and found that these cute little guys and gals turn into Black Swallowtail butterflies (Papilio Polyxenes). This butterfly is the state butterfly of both Oklahoma and New Jersey. They are also known as the “Parsley Worm”. Please, when you see these caterpillars in your yard be kind to them.

HEATWAVES CAN RUIN A GARDEN BUT THERE ARE WAYS TO PROTECT IT By Jen Ursillo, wobm.com
The latest New Jersey heatwave may have done a number on people’s plants, flowers, garden vegetables, herbs, and even lawns. The type of plant or vegetable, its root system, the type of soil used and how often it’s watered, all influence how the plant responds to extensive heat. But there are ways to protect the garden this summer. Why plants can’t survive the heat? Bill Hlubik, professor and Agriculture and Resource Management Agent for Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County, said as temperatures soar into the 80s and 90s, plants respond differently to heat stress. Each plant has its own set of protective mechanisms. They’ll form these shock proteins that offers some level of protection. Each plant has its own level of protection. Some plants are more resilient to the heat than others. It could be it has a deeper root system or the origin of that plant was in an area of the world that was accustomed to those high temperatures. He said plants respond to heat by transpiration. That’s where they release water from the leaves. It’s a natural mechanism similar to people sweating and releasing heat that way. Plants have that same mechanism. But during a heatwave, the plants can’t keep up with the amount of moisture being released from its leaves. So the plants shut down which can lead to discoloration or brown leaf tips. How can people protect their plants during a heatwave? Hlubik said while there are certain types of plants, flowers, bushes, trees, vegetables and herbs that are more resilient to the heat, it really doesn’t matter what is planted in a backyard. As long as people use mulches around the plant, whether it be organic compost material, peat moss, straw or bark mulches, two to three inches thick. That helps to reduce evaporation around the soil, helps to keep the soil and roots cool and helps to lock in moisture around those plants. It’s also important to respond before the heatwave actually hits, if possible. Hlubik said 24 to 48 hours before the heatwave arrives, adequately irrigate the soil so that there is moisture available. When the heatwave arrives, sometimes it’s hard for the plant to
New 2021 NISSAN SENTRA SV
take up that moisture availability, he added.
Make sure that there’s plenty of air circulation in the area where there are plants. That will actually decrease temperatures. Shade certain plants such as azaleas and rhododendrons, which should have about 15% to 30% shade. Since they have shallow root systems, they should be watered often. What plants respond well to the heat? Plants like tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and asparagus are deep-rooted plants that like the heat, Hlubik said. However, they do not like the heat in the evenings. If those plants have too much heat in the evening hours, like other fruits or vegetables, their pollen may become non-viable or they may lose their flowers. “There may be a certain amount of flower abortion,” Hlubik said. Trees like American Sweet Gum, Kentucky Coffee and Yellowwood are resilient to the summer heat and can bounce back quicker. In terms of bushes, junipers, forsythias, lilacs and gray dogwood do fairly well under higher temperatures. As far as flowers, lantana, cosmos, cleome, spider and straw flowers can withstand the heat. Woody herbs such as rosemary, thyme, verbena and garden zinnias also thrive in hot, dry temperatures. What about lawn care? Use different lawn varieties with a deeper root system so they are able to access water down deeper than other types of grasses such as bluegrass and rye grass, Hlubik said. Many of these deeper root system grasses also have endophytes that can protect them from pest problems. Grass tends to go into dormancy when it gets too hot and it doesn’t get enough water. Hlubik said if the grass goes into dormancy, let it happen. Rainfall will return and the grass will emerge from dormancy. When the grass goes into dormancy, he said this is a protective mechanism to preserve itself and wait until natural rainfall returns. When irrigating the lawn, he said do it early in the morning so no water is wasted. Irrigating late in the day can actually exacerbate disease problems on plants. With any plant, water on the leaves late in the day due to surface irrigation can increase the level of disease problems on those plants.

Melissa Misurelli, a Monsignor Donovan High School graduate, received a $1,000 scholarship from the National Society of High School Scholars.
“As a teammate, swimmer, scholar and future doctor, my leadership capabilities can only grow with my educational progression,” she said.
Misurelli serves as a math tutor, varsity swim team captain and works as a lifeguard for the Ship Bottom Beach Patrol. Her passion for fitness led to the start of her own personal training business in August that motivates kids ages six through thirteen to spend time outside and stay fit amid remote learning.
NSHSS is an international honors and scholarship program. The 18 Under 18 Award was established to recognize students under 18 who are passionate about their contributions to society and showcase how they plan to utilize this passion moving forward into their college career to further effect change.

SUMMER 2021
LINCOLN PLANS TO DELIVER A FULL PORTFOLIO OF CONNECTED AND ELECTRIFIED VEHICLES BY 2030 Lincoln will debut its first global fully electric vehicle next year, the first step toward electrifying its entire portfolio of vehicles by the end of the decade. The new electric vehicle will debut as the brand celebrates its 100th anniversary next year and accelerates growth in North America and China.
The company’s new rear-wheeldrive and all-wheel-drive battery electric flexible architecture will enable Lincoln to deliver four new and distinct fully electric vehicles. The first fully electric Lincoln will join the plug-in hybrid Aviator and Corsair SUVs, as the brand shifts toward electrification.
By mid-decade, Lincoln expects half of its global volume will be zero-emissions vehicles and plans to electrify its portfolio of vehicles by 2030. This is part of the company’s Ford+ plan and Ford Motor Company’s planned investment of more than $30 billion in electrification by 2025.
Lincoln also plans to expand its portfolio of effortless and personalized experiences, using the Lincoln Way app to deliver an enhanced suite of connected services as it prepares for an electrified future.
“As we accelerate Lincoln’s transformation in North America and China, there is no better time to propel the Lincoln brand forward with electrification,” said Joy Falotico, president, Lincoln. “Electrification will take Quiet Flight to a new level with the smooth, exhilarating take-off feel and serene quietness our clients expect from a Lincoln.”
“Our clients deserve the very best from Lincoln,” said Falotico. “Our world-class vehicles, effortless services and advanced connected technology will allow us to create an always-on relationship with them and help transform the Lincoln brand for the future.” Evolving the brand’s signature design and drive experience with maximized comfort for all, Lincoln’s unique electrified vision is a true representation of its Quiet
Flight DNA. The debut of the Lincoln Zephyr Reflection concept at Auto Shanghai earlier this year hints to the brand’s future design philosophy and signature features it will offer. Evolving Lincoln’s design, the fully electric Lincoln will deliver a more spacious interior that creates the ultimate expression of the Lincoln sanctuary. On approach, the exterior presents a striking, modern aesthetic, while the iconic Lincoln star evolves to meet an electrified future. Thoughtful details inside create a truly rejuvenating space for all, with clever storage solutions and minimalistic panels, while a larger, expansive panoramic vista roof enhances natural light and provides a more open, airy feel throughout. With a coast-to-coast display that offers a sweeping view of the horizon, Lincoln’s new digital design language – Constellation – includes exclusive themes showcasing the night sky. Clients can choose the theme that best reflects their current mood.

HONDA LEADS CARS.COM 2021 AMERICAN-MADE INDEX WITH 4 OF THE TOP 10 MODELS Honda’s commitment to building products in America was on display in the Cars.com 2021 American-Made Index® — with four Honda models in the top 10, more than any other automaker, and seven Honda and Acura models ranking among the top 20. Honda vehicles in the top 10 are the Alabama-made Honda Ridgeline pickup, Odyssey minivan, and Pilot and Passport SUVs, with the Ohio-built Honda Accord ranked 17th. Two Ohio-made Acura models, the Acura RDX premium sport crossover and TLX premium sport sedan, placed 12th and 13th, respectively. All four of the Honda models in the top 10 of the 2021 AmericanMade Index — Ridgeline, Odyssey, Pilot and Passport —were designed and developed by Honda engineers in the U.S. and are produced exclusively in Lincoln, Alabama. Honda’s Alabama Auto Plant celebrates 20 years of manufacturing this year.
The engines that power these vehicles also are built at the Alabama plant, with the transmissions produced at Honda’s nearby transmission plant in Tallapoosa, Georgia. “Honda has been building cars in the U.S. for almost 40 years, and today we build a higher percentage of the vehicles we sell in the U.S. than all but one other automaker,” said Rick Schostek, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “We’re proud of the 30,000 Honda associates who design, develop, build, sell and finance our products in the U.S.” More than two-thirds of the Honda vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2020 were made in America at Honda plants in Ohio, Indiana and Alabama, the secondhighest percentage of any automaker for the share of vehicles that were built and sold in America. Honda operates five automobile manufacturing plants in the U.S. – more than any other international automaker.

OCEAN COUNTY LIBRARY ELIMINATES FINES
“Our Ocean County residents are very responsible about taking care of their Library books and materials and returning them,” remarked Library Director Susan Quinn. “As a result, the Ocean County Library Commission decided to make the suspension of late fines permanent.”
The Ocean County Library has become fine-free as of July 1, by action taken at the Ocean County Library Commission’s June 15 meeting. The Library’s mission is to connect people, build community, and transform lives. Eliminating overdue fines will further that mission by removing barriers to the Library’s resources.
“Going fine-free provides wider access and enjoyment of the Library’s resources,” said Ocean County Commissioner Joseph Vicari, the Library liaison. “We encourage everyone to come and enjoy the use of our Libraries.” “The Ocean County Library system suspended late fines when the Coronavirus pandemic forced its closure in March 2020,” said Library Assistant Director Sara Siegler. “After the July 2020 reopening, nearly all materials were returned.”
A review of statistics spanning the past several years revealed that the average rate of return of materials is 99.79%. In 2019, the American Library Association passed a resolution that asserted overdue fines are a barrier to equitable access and encouraged libraries to eliminate them. Ocean County Library joins many libraries across the country in becoming a finefree Library.
Ocean County Library Commission Chair Ruthanne Scaturro remarked, “Nothing is more important to the Library than maintaining a healthy relationship with patrons. Saying ‘farewell to fines’ is another step in the right direction.” “It will make using our services more convenient for our patrons who lead busy lives, and for those living with limited resources,” added Library Commission Vice Chair Christopher Mullins.
