CALVARY BAPTIST RECEIVES “CAUSEWHEELS” DONATION By Kaitlyn Strohmeier
We are happy to continue, due to overwhelming community response, with our 2020 campaign – “CauseWheels” Monthly Vehicle Donation Program - to help our neighbors and positively impact Ocean County. In 2019 Causeway had two requests for vehicle donations to local nonprofit organizations. We were able to accommodate each of these requests. This prompted an idea to follow up 2019’s 50th Anniversary $10,000 Monthly Grant program. We are proud to announce our February winner, Calvary Baptist Church in Little Egg Harbor! In 1875, Jonathan Shinn and Charles Pharo helped start a Baptist church in West Creek. As the church’s membership, especially the children and youth group, grew, plans were made to expand. In 1958, Chet Holman offered the current property to the church. This allowed the church to be added onto, space for parking, space for a parsonage, and room for future expansion. In October of 1962, the chapel building was moved to its current location. The church’s name was then changed to Calvary Baptist Church.

Calvary Baptist Church runs a food pantry that is powered by incredible volunteers who are members of the Church. The pantry started off as a small closet with a just a few donations and grew into the large room which it is today. Before COVID19 hit, the pantry was feeding approximately 200-250 people a month at the community meal, in addition to the weekly visits. They went from feeding 12 families a week, to between 70-100 families a week. Before COVID19, the pantry was a place where families could go in and essentially “shop” for what items they need. Due to health and safety precautions, families in need drive up, pop their trunk for the volunteers to place pre-bagged groceries. The amount of food given should last the family through the week. The Pantry is teamed up with FULFILL, formerly known as the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Fulfill delivers food to Calvary Baptist Church once a week. The amount donated from Fulfill provides each family with at least two or three day’s worth of food. The Church
received a Grant from Fulfill for a walk in freezer, which they were in desperate need of with the growing number of people in need. How will Calvary Baptist Church utilize this truck? The food pantry receives large weekly food donations from several local grocery stores, (BJs and Wal-Mart). The truck will be a huge help in enabling them to pick up the donations and get

HACKENSACK SUGGESTS HYDROXYCHOLORQUINE AS OUTPATIENT TREATMENT FOR COVID
Researchers from Hackensack Meridian Health John Theurer Cancer Center (JTCC), a member of the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center consortium, have published results from a multi-center, retrospective, observational study suggesting a possible role for the use of hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malarial agent with antiviral and antiinflammatory properties, as an outpatient treatment for COVID-19. In a paper published in the current issue of BMC Infectious Diseases, the JTCC researchers report that hydroxychloroquine use in the outpatient setting was associated with a reduction in hospitalization rates in mildly symptomatic individuals with COVID-19, compared to those not given to hydroxychloroquine. They called for additional exploration of hydroxychloroquine to clarify its role in the outpatient treatment of COVID-19. “We were very pleased to see a statistically significant reduction in the risk of subsequent hospitalization in mildly symptomatic
outpatients treated with hydroxychloroquine,” said lead investigator Andrew Ip, MD, MS, Director of the Division of Outcomes and Value Research at JTCC, and an attending physician in the Division of Lymphoma and Division of Myeloma at JTCC. “The results are especially encouraging in light of previous observational studies in which hydroxychloroquine did not appear to reduce the risk of death in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. We hope our findings lead to further investigation of this drug as a potentially viable oral outpatient therapy for early-stage COVID-19.” Ip is an associate member of Georgetown Lombardi. Dr. Ip and colleagues collected and evaluated data from 1,274 outpatients identified through electronic health records as having documented COVID-19 infection, of whom 97 (7.6%) were prescribed hydroxychloroquine prior to any COVID-19-related hospitalization.
shuttershock.com They also constructed a propensity-matched sample of 1,067 patients, consisting of 97 who were exposed to hydroxychloroquine in the outpatient setting and 970 without such exposure. A total of 326 (30.6%) patients in the propensity-matched cohort subsequently required hospitalization, including 21 (21.6%) treated with hydroxychloroquine and 305 (31.4%) patients not exposed to the drug. In
the primary multivariable logistic regression analysis with propensity matching, exposure to hydroxychloroquine was associated with a reduced rate of hospitalization related to progressive COVID-19 illness (odds ratio 0.53; 95% confidence interval, 0.29, 0.95). Sensitivity analyses revealed similar associations.
FAMILY PROMISE: THE POWER OF SMALL DEEDS
prepared meals to our families in the Daymark Family Shelter Program. As we have had to reimagine what sheltering families looked like post Covid you’ve allowed for the comfort of a hot meal.
By Heather Johann With the holidays and Valentine’s Day behind us, it is a time that a lot of us reflect on the gifts of the season. Like most, I find that it is easy to get caught up in the grand gestures. The fancy jewelry, ornate floral arrangements, luxury handbags, and gourmet dinners flood our social media feeds and intoxicate our senses. A few weeks later when the day has been forgotten, I cannot recall who received those gifts or even what they looked like. While the large gestures often set the framework for the most important relationships in our lives, the small more frequent gestures are what sustain those relationships. A great relationship needs both to weather the seasons of life and survive long term. Here at Family Promise of Southern Ocean County we wanted to highlight the small gestures. Over recent months they have helped us inch closer and closer to our mission of guiding homeless children and their families toward achieving sustainable independence. While the large donations have set the foundation of where we can shelter families in this post Covid world and how we can prevent families from becoming homeless as safeguards expire; the small gestures are what is keeping smiles on the children’s faces and keeps our staff and volunteers pushing forward towards our mission. There is no gesture too small to help provide a stable home for the children of Ocean County. Thank you to the ice cream man from Barnegat Light who donated all his tips last summer to Family Promise. Not only did you help provide funds to our Anchors to Stay programing; allowing for 80 families to remain in their homes, you inspired children throughout your route to host lemonade stands to benefit Family Promise. Thank you to the many children and families who generously donated gifts and holiday dinners to families in our programs. You were able to provide a Christmas for 56

Cardiac Calcium Scoring Saves One Man’s Life Southern Ocean Medical Center offers lifesaving scan for $99
When team members were being recruited to test the new cardiac calcium scan procedure at Southern Ocean Medical Center, Kevin Jester, the hospital’s imaging manager, signed up, not because he had any worries about his heart health—he was just doing his part to make sure everything was working as it should before the hospital started offering it to patients. “It’s one thing to go through a simulation,” Kevin says. “But it’s also very helpful to have a living patient to practice on.” The imaging procedure (called a CT Calcium Scoring scan) a CT or CAT scan, is a preventive cardiovascular screening test that is painless and noninvasive and takes only 10 minutes. An Electron Beam Computed Tomography (EVCT) beam detects and measures the amount of calcium in the heart’s arteries. The more calcium that is present, the greater the likelihood of developing heart disease or having a heart attack or stroke. The test provides patients and their health care providers with the most accurate available “picture” of their current risk of developing heart disease or experiencing a heart attack. “Offering CT Calcium Scoring at a permanently discounted rate is a great way for Southern Ocean Medical Center to promote American Heart Month, but also to encourage yearround and life-long heart health,” said Michele Morrison, MPH, BSHA, RN, chief hospital executive at Southern Ocean Medical Center. “Our hope is that members of the community will take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about their cardiovascular health.” Although Kevin, has high blood pressure, he had
no family history of heart disease or any symptoms of heart disease. On top of that, a routine heart health check-up six months prior indicated that all was normal. Kevin’s calcium scan results suggested that he was at high risk for a cardiac event such as a stroke or heart attack. So, after seeing his cardiologist, Kevin had a cardiac catheterization that revealed that he had one 100-percent artery blockage, and three arteries that were 80-percent blocked. Within a week and a half of getting the calcium scan, Kevin had a quadruple bypass surgery. He spent a week in the hospital, followed by a month of home care with Hackensack Meridian At Home visiting nurses. After that, he completed two months of outpatient cardiac rehabilitation at Southern Ocean, where he worked with “a great group of nurses,” says Kevin. “They keep you moving, and they educate you at the same time—and you have a lot of fun doing it. They’re a special group of people, I’ll say.” Hackensack Meridian Southern Ocean Medical Center is providing CT Calcium Scoring, a preventive cardiovascular screening test, at a permanently discounted price of $99 — a savings of $151. Expanding on its commitment to improving access to affordable and convenient care, the medical center is offering the discounted price to provide members of the community to learn more about their risk of heart disease. CT Calcium Scoring requires a written prescription from a physician. To schedule an appointment for a CT Calcium Scoring test, call Southern Ocean Medical Center at 609-978-3400 or 609-978-8900 ext. 2071.
Bug is a non-stop, on the go, confident kitten, whereas Steele can be shy with new people and new surroundings. Bug is his safety net and Steele sleeps soundly when they are wrapped up in each other. Steele had to have his right front leg amputated from an injury as a tiny kitten that did not heal. He does not know he only has 3 legs. He runs and jumps and plays like any other kitten. His surgery is all healed now and there is no further vet care required. They both love food and Bug will even eat out of your hand. Steele is very vocal and will meow when you look at him or call his name. They would not mind sharing a home with another cat but are afraid of dog barking so no dogs, please. They are neutered, have had age appropriate vaccinations, tested negative for fiv and felv and microchipped. 2021 DETROIT FREE PRESS CAR OF THE YEAR: HYUNDAI ELANTRA
T
he best cars and trucks have always resulted from the intersection of inspired design and advanced technology. That was true when a hand-crank was cutting edge engineering, when tailfins were the height of style, and it’s never been truer than today. The best cars, trucks and SUVs introduced this year demonstrate the peak of modern design and engineering. Buyers’ traditional desires - dependability, capability, value - were amplified by economic and health concerns in 2020. At the same time, features to make cars safer than ever, or people and the planet, became an attainable reality for more drivers.
the Elantra. The body’s crisp lines create a distinctive, modern and upscale look.
Design overcomes budget-conscious materials in the cockpit. Ergonomically located controls, including a 10.25-inch touch screen and classic dials and buttons for the controls where drivers want ‘em — volume, tuning, temperature and fan — complete the roomy interior’s amenities.
A spacious cockpit with ergonomically located controls, including a 10.25-inch touch screen and classic dials and buttons. Prices start at $19,650, and $25K gets you 16-inch aluminum wheels; pedestrian and cyclist detection; wireless charging, adaptive cruise control and more — value and safety other automakers should envy.
The 2021 Free Press vehicles of the year exemplify that. Everything about the new Hyundai Elantra seems to be a step above its competition. The new compact sedan makes a strong first impression with what may be the richest and most detailed video display of instruments and gauges on any vehicle. Glancing at the new Elantra’s gauges is like the first time you watched hockey on a high-def screen: Who knew you could see the puck? The Elantra’s simple, crystal clear gauges make you wonder why any automaker bothers with physical gauges any more. Equally advanced and upscale, the Elantra is the first compact car to offer wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, features some new luxury vehicles can’t match. That attention to design and detail is apparent throughout

NISSAN SENTRA
The affordable 2021 Nissan Sentra compact sedan looks like a scaled-down version of Nissan’s more expensive Maxima. Nissan’s new compact was perfectly suited to the nervous public mood when it debuted in 2020’s plague-ravaged spring. Priced starting at $19,410, fitted with advanced safety features and delivering 33 mpg combined city/highway driving, the Sentra looked like a sure thing in uncertain times. The new compact sedan also is a breath of fresh air and new technology in a segment that’s important to entry-level buyers but increasingly neglected by manufacturers focused on more profitable small SUVs. Like the Elantra, the Sentra also eschews the bargain basement looks that have plagued many small cars. Styled like a mini-Maxima, it’s rolling proof of the old adage that good design doesn’t cost any more than lackluster looks. The automaker just has to care about the product and respect its buyers.

ALL-NEW 2021 ROGUE SETS PACE FOR NISSAN’S RECYCLING EFFORTS The all-new 2021 Nissan Rogue is breaking new ground as the company’s first global model built using a “closed-loop” recycling system for aluminum parts. The system helps reduce CO2 emissions compared with using parts made with primary alloys from raw materials. It also promotes the use of materials that don’t rely on newly mined resources, as well as the reduction of waste from factories. The hood and doors of the 2021 Rogue are stamped from aluminum alloy, a material that reduces vehicle weight and helps improve fuel efficiency and power performance. The model is built in Kyushu, Japan, and Smyrna, Tennessee. To support the process, Nissan has collaborated with Kobe Steel, Ltd. and UACJ Corp. in Japan, and with Arconic Corporation and Novelis Inc. in the U.S. At the core of the closedloop recycling system is a large pneumatic conveyance system. As hoods and doors are stamped into shape, scrap material is shredded and extracted, keeping aluminum grades separate.
The separation ensures that Nissan can return high-quality scrap to suppliers. The suppliers turn the separated and reprocessed aluminum scrap into aluminum alloy sheets and redeliver them to Nissan for use in production.

Recycling scrap aluminum saves more than 90% of the energy that would be needed to create a comparable amount of metal from raw materials.
Under the Nissan Green Program 2022, Nissan aims to replace 30% of the raw materials used in cars built in 2022 with materials that don’t rely on newly mined resources. To achieve this, the company will use recycled materials and develop biomaterials, carry out recycling activities both at suppliers and in-house, and seek to reduce the weight of car bodies.

Nissan will continue to promote efficient and sustainable use of resources, including the use of renewable resources and recyclable materials.

RWJBARNABAS USES NEW COVID TREATMENT WITH PROMISING RESULTS up to 10 days — it decreases the viral load of COVID and the viral load is what makes people sick,” he said.
By David Matthau, wobm.com It’s only had emergency use authorization since November, but monoclonal antibody therapy, an experimental COVID-19 treatment, continues to show promise.
He said doctors have been administering this treatment in the ER since mid November, to a total of almost 3,000 patients across the system’s 11 acute care hospitals, and the results have been striking.
According to Dr. Christopher Freer, the vice president for emergency and hospitalist medicine of RWJBarnabas Health, monoclonal antibody therapy is for those in the higher risk category, people 65 and older or those with health conditions that test positive for COVID but are only mildly sick.
“95% of these patients have not returned to the emergency department needing to be admitted for progression of COVID related illnesses,” he said.
Monoclonal antibodies are genetically engineered and cloned. The therapy is administered as an infusion over an hour or so and then patients will stay another hour to be observed.
Getty Images Patients are also sent home with pulse oximeters to make sure their oxygen levels aren’t dropping.
“We then send you home and we arrange telehealth visits with our Barnabas Health medical doctors,” he said.
Freer said this type of treatment is not
for people who are sick enough to be hospitalized. “The earlier you get this into the patient — ideally in the first 72 hours but you can go
He said when a COVID-19 patient shows up in the emergency room, if they fit into the high-risk category and they are not seriously ill, they are offered the treatment. “There is not a lot of risk. There is less than 1% chance of an allergic reaction, which is easily treated,” he said. “We have not seen a lot of that.”

THIS FLU SEASON IN NJ MAY TURN OUT TO BE MILDEST EVER RECORDED
By David Matthau, wobm.com A year ago, influenza activity was at high levels in every region of the Garden State. That is certainly not the case this year, which could turn out to be the mildest flu season ever recorded in New Jersey. According to Dr. Tina Tan, the state epidemiologist, influenza activity remains low, which she says is unusual for this time of year. She said influenza tends to impact children more severely than adults and it is not unusual to have multiple reports of children in hospital emergency rooms and even in the ICU during flu season. Not this year.
Public health officials believe precautions to stop the spread of COVID-19, including wearing masks, social distancing and washing hands frequently, are tamping down other respiratory illnesses as well. Tan said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recently done studies on the impact of mask wearing, finding a correlation with decreased hospitalizations. She added, however, that the flu is unpredictable and “while we’re not seeing a lot of activity right now, who knows? It might increase in the coming months, so we have a vaccine that’s readily available — get vaccinated.”
CALVARY, From Page 1 Additionally, the church office does not run the Food Pantry and can not open it to those who stop by during the week. Where do you get the food and supplies from? Our church family donates food items or give financially so that we can help our community. We are teamed up with FULFILL (Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean County) where we can get food for free or for very discounted prices to be able to provide it to those in need. We also receive weekly bakery donations from BJ’s in Manahawkin, fresh or frozen food from Walmart in LEH, and frozen meals from the Wawa on the corner of Frog Pond & Rt.539.
BARNEGAT ROTARY CLUB SEEKS DONATIONS FOR SPRING FOOD DRIVE BARNEGAT, NJ — The Rotary Club of Barnegat is collecting non-perishable food items for their spring food drive. The club’s goal is to provide more than 20 families with full meals for Easter this year. The following locations are accepting donations: WB Grant Agency 344 S. Main St., Barnegat

Hyundai Elantra Wins Prestigious 2021 North American Car of the Year The 2021 Hyundai Elantra was named winner of the 2021 North American Car of the Year award today by the North American Car, Utility and Truck of the Year (NACTOY) automotive media jury. This is the second time the Hyundai sedan has won Car of the Year (2012). Only two cars have won the award more than once (Chevrolet Corvette and Honda Civic) and this marks Hyundai’s third Car of the Year category win. The winner was announced during a virtual event.
is a symbol of our blend of dynamic design, advanced technology and great fuel economy. Elantra customers are going to experience all of the hard work and dedication that went into making this class-leading car.”
“Thank you to all of the jurors. I am honored to accept this award on behalf of the entire company, our Alabama and Ulsan plant employees who build Elantra and our dealers,” said José Muñoz, Global Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai Motor Company, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor North America and Hyundai Motor America. “Elantra
Now in their 28th year, the NACTOY awards are selected through a series of three separate votes by a diverse jury of automotive journalists from numerous outlets in the United States and Canada. Jurors evaluate the finalists based on segment leadership, innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar.
The jurors tested and evaluated more than 40 new vehicles before voting the top three cars, utility vehicles and trucks to be 2021 finalists. The Nissan Sentra and Genesis G80 were the other car finalists.

NJ’S MOST-ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE COVID VACCINE By David Matthau, wobm.com More than a million COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in New Jersey. During his update on Monday, Gov. Phil Murphy announced that 813,216 initial doses and 224,237 second shots have been administered. He said the vaccination program, which began in the Garden State on Dec. 15, is gaining momentum.
of transmission is down to 0.85 (the goal is 1.0 or less) and the positivity rate is trending lower at 8.5%. “All of this means that our healthcare system remains in a very strong position and capable of treating those currently in its care. And if these trends continue, we can again look to additional steps to further reopen our economy,” he said. In the meantime New Jerseyans continue to have questions about the vaccines.
“Even with the continued scarcity in supply and the rescheduling caused by snowstorms, we have put 500,000 vaccine doses in arms in just a little over two weeks,” he said. “While this is a significant milestone we have a good ways to go to reach our ultimate goal of 4.7 million adults by the beginning of summer.”
According to state Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli, the state vaccine call center at 855-568-0545, handled more than 16,000 calls over the weekend:
