Simply Hair

When you think of Manahawkin, you think of a great place to raise a family, a close knit community, the many changes that have happened over the years, and the businesses that have come and gone. In 1975, a woman named Meredith Ash started Simply Hair. Teri Holl, who worked at Simply Hair from the very beginning, became the manager in 1977, and in 1979 she and her husband Al Holl purchased Simply Hair. At the age of 18, I started working for Simply Hair & Nails as an assistant. To continue reading about Simply Hair, go to page 12.

Relay for Life Manahawkin Always a Success

By Amanda Barrett Community Manager Relay for Life ACS

What started as one man walking around a track in Tacoma, Washington 30 years ago has grown into the world’s largest movement to fight back against cancer. The Relay for Life program is a community event where teams and individuals set up campsites at the school and take turns walking around the track. Each team has at least one participant on the track at all times. Today, more than four million people participate in American Cancer Society Relay for Life events in 6,000 communities worldwide and the Relay for Life of Manahawkin is one of them. 34 teams from workplaces, places of worship, schools, and more participated in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Manahawkin’s event on May 29-30 at Southern Regional High School. More than 300 registered participants raised over $72,000 to support groundbreaking cancer research, education and prevention programs, and critical services for people facing cancer. This year, over 80 survivors

and caregivers took the celebratory first lap to start off the event. To celebrate Relay for Life being 30 years strong in 2015, the Manahawkin event took it back to the 1980’s. Teams were encouraged to dress in 80’s apparel, decorate their campsites to match the theme and participated in retro style activities such as oversized Jenga, Simon Says and a Cheeseball Toss contest. “It was very inspirational to see people from all parts of our community having fun while fighting back against cancer,” said Jennifer Oddo, Event Lead. “Together, we celebrated those surviving cancer, remembered loved ones lost too soon, and took action to finish the fight once and for all.” Team Causeway Family of Dealerships raised over $2300.00 for this year’s Relay! We would like to thank everyone who donated and participated! We will continue to accept donation until August. Go to http://tinyurl/oz5kwut to donate now!

History of father’s day

On July 19, 1910, the governor of the U.S. state of Washington proclaimed the nation’s first “Father’s Day.” However, it was not until 1972, 58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day official, that the day became a nationwide holiday in the United States. MOTHER’S DAY: INSPIRATION FOR FATHER’S DAY The “Mother’s Day” we celebrate today has its origins in the peace-and-reconciliation campaigns of the post-Civil War era. During the 1860s, at the urging of activist Ann Reeves Jarvis, one divided West Virginia town celebrated “Mother’s Work Days” that brought together the mothers of Confederate and Union soldiers. In 1870, the activist Julia Ward Howe issued a “Mother’s Day Proclamation” calling on a “general congress of women” to “promote the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, [and] the great and general interests of peace.” However, Mother’s Day did not become a commercial holiday until 1908, when–inspired by Jarvis’s daughter Anna, who wanted to honor her own mother by making Mother’s Day a national holiday–the

John Wanamaker department store in Philadelphia sponsored a service dedicated to mothers in its auditorium. Thanks in large part to this association with retailers, who saw great potential for profit in the holiday, Mother’s Day caught on right away. In 1909, 45 states observed the day, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson approved a resolution that made the second Sunday in May a holiday in honor of “that tender, gentle army, the mothers of America.” ORIGINS OF FATHER’S DAY The campaign to celebrate the nation’s fathers did not meet with the same enthusiasm–perhaps because, as one florist explained, “fathers haven’t the same sentimental appeal that mothers have.” On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation’s first event explicitly in honor of fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December’s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, but it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday. The next year, a Spokane, Washington woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by a widower, tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother’s Day for male parents. She went to

in stock now! SMYRNA, Tenn. – The U.S. automotive industry is vibrant in the south, with a steady drumbeat of growth being contributed from Nissan North America. Just over a month since announcing a new supplier park at its Smyrna, Tenn. manufacturing facility, that plant today begins production on the all-new, eighth-generation Maxima sedan. “The human story of Nissan is that it took Tennessee, which had virtually no auto jobs and low family incomes, and gave us a state that has about one-third of our manufacturing auto jobs… and family incomes are way up,” said U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.). Nissan’s Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant began operations in 1983. Three decades later in 2014, this plant assembled more than 648,000 vehicles in a year, making it the highest producing automotive assembly plant in North America. The Maxima is one of six models now produced in the Smyrna facility. “Today is a great day for the plant,” said John Martin, senior vice president, Manufacturing, Supply Chain Management and Purchasing, Nissan North America, Inc. “It’s a culmination of a lot of hard work by an awful lot of people in Japan, in Farmington Hills at our R&D center,

Nissan’s Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant is the top producing automotive plant in North America, employing more than 8,400 people. Today, employees celebrated the start of production for the new Maxima, which is just part of the story for Nissan in 2015. Later this year, Nissan says to expect new versions of the Altima, Sentra and TITAN truck.

“I have been here for 30 years and I have seen all three gen Maximas launched here, and this one, right here, is going to raise the bar for us,” said Ivan Kelso, Nissan Smyrna.

The eighth generation of Nissan’s iconic “4Door Sports Car” combines 300-horsepower performance with a bold exterior design, a premium interior cockpit and an extensive range of safety, security and driving aids including Predictive Forward Collision Warning, Forward Emergency Braking, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Blind Spot Warning.

“Ever since I moved to Tennessee, I always told myself that if I ever had the opportunity to work at Nissan I would never leave and have been a big fan since,” said Dan Mantor, Nissan Smyrna. “Ever since I started driving, I have always had Nissan 240Zs and I have always been a big fan. I decided one day I was finally going to do it and I ended up getting a tattoo. I am just a big fan and it shows my passion to be here.”

SMARTDEVICELINK GAINS MOMENTUM

As Industry-Driven Option For Smartphone App Integration Into Vehicle Dashboards allows smartphone apps such as Spotify, Glympse, iHeartRadio, Pandora and others to be easily accessed by drivers using voice recognition and dashboard controls. Click here to see AppLink in action.

• Open-source version of Ford AppLink™, called SmartDeviceLink or SDL, is being studied by Toyota for future integration into vehicles for command and control of smartphone apps through dashboard buttons, display screens and voice recognition technology • Adoption of SDL by other vehicle manufacturers and suppliers gives customers more choice in how they connect and control their smartphones, and drives growth of the automotive developer community by creating apps that work across different brands and vehicles • SDL allows automakers to maintain control of user interface design for product differentiation while also helping provide an improved consumer experience through new entertainment, information and navigation app development

Ford created SmartDeviceLink by contributing the AppLink software to the open-source community. The goal is to help drive growth of the automotive app developer community and provide automakers a way to maintain innovative and differentiated connectivity and navigation systems that deliver on their customers’ expectations for smartphone app integration. SDL software allows access to in-vehicle controls including display screens, buttons and the voice recognition engine to deliver a fully integrated app experience for customers. Toyota engineering is actively engaging with the SDL project, and investigating further collaboration with Livio and Ford. Livio, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ford Motor Company, is the project maintainer of SmartDeviceLink technology, which can be found at www.genivi.org or www.github.com/smartdevicelink. SDL aims to provide a myriad of capabilities for automakers and developers:

With today’s announcement of Toyota exploring adoption of SmartDeviceLink technology, traction is gaining for the open-source software project goal of creating an automotive industry-based solution for integrating smartphone apps into vehicles.

• Customization of the overall look and feel of the connectivity and navigation system user experience and connected services to support appropriate brand attributes while leveraging the standardized SDL protocol for command and control of smartphone apps

“Dashboard interface design and smartphone connectivity are key elements for product differentiation within the industry,” said Don Butler, executive director, Ford Connected Vehicle and Services. “At Ford, we view all aspects of time behind the wheel as core to the experience we provide customers. We’re pleased other members of the industry feel the same way, and look forward to working together to drive even more support for the SDL developer community.”

• Broad device and platform compatibility, since SDL is agnostic and communicates with the smartphone apps. This means consumers are not limited to having the latest devices, operating system software versions or platforms

In Ford vehicles equipped with SYNC®, AppLink™ serves as the application programming interface that

• Globally accessible, limited only by app availability in each market • Works with vehicle-embedded voice recognition technology, and so not limited by cellular connections or available bandwidth for functionality • Facilitates scale and speed to market for developers

since apps only need to be integrated once to work across multiple automotive platforms

• Empowers consumers by providing technology that clearly communicates and requests permission for sharing of personal and vehicle data to apps that enhance customer experience

“We first introduced AppLink to serve our customers’ desire to access their apps inside the car,” said Butler. “Then we launched the Ford Developer Program to support the ecosystem of developers creating new, innovative experiences. Now, with SmartDeviceLink, we’re demonstrating our long-term commitment to our customers, and the industry overall, to make it easy for smartphones and cars to work together everywhere around the world.”

Branded as AppLink, SDL technology is currently available on more than 5 million Ford vehicles in North America, South America, Europe and the Asia Pacific region. Three new markets are slated to come on board this year – Taiwan, New Zealand and Thailand.

Earlier this year, Ford also contributed technology to the SDL project that allows navigation app providers to project their maps and user experience into a properly equipped vehicle in order to bring smartphone navigation to the car – an important feature in markets like China.

History Of Father’s day Cont. from pg 1

local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials to drum up support for her idea, and she was successful: Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day on July 19, 1910. Slowly, the holiday spread. In 1916, President Wilson honored the day by using telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane when he pressed a button in Washington, D.C. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe Father’s Day. However, many men continued to disdain the day. As one historian writes, they “scoffed at the holiday’s sentimental attempts to domesticate manliness with flowers and gift-giving, or they derided the proliferation of such holidays as a commercial gimmick to sell more products–often paid for by the father himself.” FATHER’S DAY: CONTROVERSY AND COMMERCIALISM During the 1920s and 1930s, a movement arose to scrap Mother’s Day and Father’s Day altogether in favor of a single holiday, Parents’ Day. Every year on Mother’s Day, pro-Parents’ Day groups rallied in New York City’s Central Park–a public reminder, said Parents’ Day activist and radio performer Robert Spere, “that both parents should be loved and respected together.” Paradoxically, however, the Depression derailed this effort to combine and decommercialize the holidays. Struggling retailers and advertisers redoubled their efforts to make Father’s Day a “second Christmas” for men, promoting goods such as neckties, hats, socks, pipes and tobacco, golf clubs and other sporting goods, and greeting cards. When World War II began, advertisers began to argue that celebrating Father’s Day was a way to honor American troops and support the war effort. By the end of the war, Father’s Day may not have been a federal holiday, but it was a national institution. In 1972, in the middle of a hard-fought presidential re-election campaign, Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s Day a federal holiday at last. Today, economists estimate that Americans spend more than $1 billion each year on Father’s Day gifts. -www.history.com

The HR-V Crossover has found that no-compromise sweet spot where everything is perfect.

In Business Without Really Trying follows the rise of J Pierrepont Finch, who uses a little handbook called “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying” to climb the corporate ladder from lowly window washer to high-powered executive, tackling such familiar but potent dangers as the aggressively compliant “company man,” the office party, backstabbing co-workers, caffeine addiction and, of course, love. Finch in one step goes from window washer to bumping into the feared President, J.B. Biggley. Finch asked for a job and Biggley refers him to the personnel manager. One of the secretary’s notices Finch’s boldness and starts to crush on him. Finch ends up working for the company. By the end of his first work week Finch figures out a plan to try and get promoted. This show keeps you guessing what is coming next and the laughs keep coming. Will Finch make it up the corporate ladder? The Director of this show is Jessica O’Brien Roy. Jess has been with O.G.P. for over 15 yrs. She started out preforming in the shows, then choreographing and now directing. She is proud to have a Master’s Degree in Theater from Villanova University and also a graduate from Marymount Manhattan College for musical

theater. You may remember Jessica directing and performing as Gypsy Rose Lee in “Gypsy” a last month. Her talent is huge! Jess has so much to give and is always willing to help Our Gang. Jessica is also on the Board of Directors as the President for the group. She definitely is an asset to Our Gang Player’s. The musical Director or How to Succeed is Joe Feraldi. Joe is the Assistant Pastor at Bayside Chapel in Barnegat. Joe also graciously stepped in the final week of “Gypsy” and musically directed that show. In 2006 O.G.P. did “Guys and Dolls” and Joe decided to go audition. Joe was hoping to just be in the chorus and enjoy being on stage. Joe not only got into the show but they asked him to be one of the leads, Nathan. Joe has been musical director for Our Gang on and off through out the years. He has a great way to teach and reach the cast with the music and songs. Joe Feraldi is another talent that Our Gang Player’s is thankful for. This is a must see show. CAR TIPS

FOR THE SUMMER HEAT The summer heat can be hard on vehicles, drivers and passengers. Take some of these simple steps to keep your car in better condition during the summer months: Mitigate heat in the car’s interior. The cabin of a vehicle can reach extreme temperatures in hotter months. Vehicle interior temperatures can soar to triple digits in less than an hour, according to the National Weather Service. Drivers can try to park in shady areas, and use removable sun shades in windshields to keep parked cars cooler. Be careful of hot seats, steering wheels and other parts that drivers or passengers will come in contact with when entering a car in the summer heat. And never leave a pet or a child unattended in a car. Even in moderate heat, human and animal passengers alike can be in danger of heat stroke. Check radiator systems. Lots of summer breakdowns happen because a vehicle’s cooling system failed. Check rubber or plastic parts like hoses for cracking or excessive wear, and scrape any collected debris from the grille or other parts of the radiator to avoid overheating. Also ensure your engine has the correct amount of coolant, which can vary depending on your vehicle. Refer to your owners manual for the correct coolant type and amount. Change your oil. Extreme temperatures can also put more stress on an engine, and dirty oil can cause damage or poor engine operation. Change the oil to make sure that sludge from the winter season isn’t putting more wear on the engine. Inflate tires properly. Changes in temperature and climate can leave tires underinflated. Check each tire and add air as necessary for a safer ride, better fuel economy and less chance of a flat. Some gas stations offer free air stations with working inflation pressure testers to make this routine maintenance more convenient. Be sure to always check the approved PSI or tire pressure listed on the side of the tire. Newer vehicles have tire pressure monitors to help alert drivers to underinflated tires. Clean out the car. Too often, drivers don’t think about what’s in their car until something with a relatively low melting point, like chocolate, has run all over the upholstery or the dash. These kinds of messes can be dangerous in some cases - items like disposable lighters can explode or batteries can melt and leak hazardous materials. A clean sweep of the car at the beginning of the summer can help avoid mess and driving risks. These tips can take the edge off of summer heat and help drivers stay safe as higher temperatures arrive. -www.libertymutual.com

Ryan’s Recreational Review Electric Vehicle By Ryan Tacovsky –Sales Associate and Outdoor Enthusiast white tail deer population as well. I mean I can’t tell you one time I have been out on wildlife management property and not came across a group of white tail deer. If hunting is something that interests you there is tons of hunting education classes you can attend throughout New Jersey. This will get you start for your one on one experience with nature. And trust me once you get out there and see how peaceful it really is, you will be hooked. Besides dear, New Jersey is home to a great deal of other wild life. We have a huge population of turkey and pheasant also. Nothing is better than seeing wild New Jersey has many parks and recreation and Ocean County is home to a lot of it. We are right here in the heart of the New Jersey pines. There is so much to see and do out in nature and we pass it up every day. Nothing is more peaceful then taking a walk and seeing all the wild life and beautiful scenery all around us, or going out on a picnic with the family and getting away from it all.

Awareness Day

By James Gesicki -sales consultant for Causeway Ford and Lincoln On June 10th 2015, I had the pleasure of attending Galloway Township Middle School’s electric vehicle awareness day. I was there representing the Causeway Family of Dealerships with one of our 2015 Ford Fusion Hybrids. It was a very enlightening experience being able to help these students with their questions about the differences between hybrids and plug in electric vehicles. What took me most by surprise was to see how excited and interested they were about these vehicles. We have a whole new generation growing up where kids as young as 12-13 years old, who are still a few years away

turkey running around in the wild and hearing them gobble, it is one of the coolest thing you can see and hear in nature. Now along with New Jersey wild life management having amazing lakes set up they also have quite a few pheasant fields set up all over New Jersey and they stock these with birds every year. Stafford Forge in Eagleswood and Little Egg Habor Townships

The fresh water fishing here is prime, nothing beats being able to throw the kayak In the back of the pickup and head out to collier mills and go out on one of their lakes for the afternoon and just relax and reel in a few largemouth bass. Collier mills is out by Jackson and there are always stocking there lakes for any wild life enthusiast to go enjoy. Another great spot to head out and do a little fresh water fishing is Stafford forge right off the garden state park way in Tuckerton. They have at least 4 huge lakes you can enjoy some great fishing at. For all you hunters, New Jersey is home to a large

Nature is such a great thing and New Jersey has so much of it to offer. As long as we take care of it, it will always take care of us back and be there for us to enjoy. So get out there and enjoy it and please do it safe and just have fun. Maybe now I will see and hear about more locals getting out there and getting interested in what nature can offer you. My name is Ryan Tacovsky I am 25 years of age and I have been a local here my entire life so far. I started working for Causeway Family of Dealerships about 2 years ago and I love working here just as much as I love the outdoors. I would love to see the younger generation get involved in hunting and fishing and keep our outdoor recreation alive for generations to come.

James Gesicki with students and staff of the Galloway Township Middle School

from getting behind the wheel, are educated and already see the many benefits of driving an EV (electric vehicle). These vehicles are fun to drive, are less expensive and more convenient to fuel than gasoline vehicles, are better for the environment, promote local jobs, and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. You may ask yourself “How is an EV fun to drive?” Well with the Ford Fusion Hybrid and plug-in Energi there are a few different ways you can recharge the battery and one fun way is called integrated regenerative braking. The idea here is to brake long and slow before coming to a stop and in turn the vehicle recaptures the energy from the friction and stores or recharges the batteries which power the electric motor that by the way is capable of running up to 85 MPH without using any gas. It turns it into a game as you can see the battery on your instrument cluster spin showing you the batteries are being charged. Then when you stop your vehicle it will tell you the percentage of energy captured. Pretty cool right? The students at Galloway Middle School sure thought so, you literally watch yourself save money!

Car Seat 101: Doing it right By Kevin Meade-Sales Consultant and Safety Enthusiast You might think that anyone who can read an instruction manual and follow directions could install a car seat correctly. In reality, though, it’s not so easy.

Here are a few tips to insure you are installing the seat correctly. Read your car seat and vehicle manuals to make sure you understand how to install the seat. If the information isn’t clear, call the automaker, the safety seat manufacturer, or both. Use the tether system if possible. All child safety seats and vehicles manufactured after 2002 must be

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 3 out of 4 car seats are improperly installed. There are a few different positions for the car seats depending on the child’s age. Car seats for young babies should be installed in the rear-facing position in the center of the rear seat. Keep your child in a rear-facing car seat for as long as possible – until age 2, or when your child reaches the seat’s maximum rear-facing height and weight limits. Once your toddler outgrows the rear-facing capabilities of his/ her car seat, your child can ride facing forward. The middle of the backseat is still the safest place for your child to sit. About the age of 4 or 40lbs or more your child is now ready for a booster seat (much easier to work with).

compatible with the LATCH system, which stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. The LATCH system is designed to make installation of a car seat easier and safer by attaching the car seat directly to anchors permanently attached to the vehicle instead of using the seat belt to secure the seat. If you’re installing a forward-facing seat, make sure it’s flat against the seat’s bottom and back. Be sure to check the safety seat’s instructions for the recommended angle of recline. Use your hands to push down as hard as you can on the car seat – or better yet, place your knee on the car seat and push down with all your weight to squash the air out of the cushion underneath it. If you’re installing a safety seat and not using LATCH, make sure the car’s seat belt is threaded through the correct slots, and pull the belt as tight as possible so there’s no slack. The car seat should move no more than an inch forward and backward or side-to-side on the belt path. Once you’ve buckled the belt, give it a yank to make sure it’s locked. THREE ALL-NEW VEHICLES FOR LINCOLN

Shanghai, 2015 – Lincoln, an iconic luxury automotive brand for discerning individuals with a heritage linked to presidents, royalty and movie stars, unveiled three allnew vehicles at Auto Shanghai 2015, including MKX – a medium-large-sized premium utility, the Navigator – a full-size SUV, and the Lincoln Continental Concept – a vision for Lincoln’s future full-size sedan to come next year. These new vehicles further demonstrate Lincoln’s commitment to bringing five new vehicles to China by 2016 with a uniquely personalized ownership experience to match. Since launching in late 2014, Lincoln has opened eleven Lincoln Stores in nine cities, bringing to life “personally crafted experiences” called The Lincoln Way to a new generation of luxury auto customers in China, and on track to expand its dealer network to 60 dealers in 50 cities by 2016. The Lincoln MKX and Navigator will join the MKZ and MKC in Lincoln’s showroom in the second half of 2015, further expanding the brand’s line-up in China. “China’s luxury auto market is growing very rapidly, and it is one of the most important markets for us to focus on and develop going forward,” said Kumar Galhotra, President of Lincoln. “With this new lineup we are staying true to Lincoln’s reputation for quality, design and innovation to meet the evolving demands of Chinese consumers.” “We are encouraged by the initial reception of the Lincoln brand in China,” said Robert Parker, President of Lincoln China. “The interest of consumers in the MKC and MKZ has exceeded our expectations. Combined with the personally crafted experiences we are bringing to customers through The Lincoln Way, we have laid a strong foundation for the brand to grow in China over the next few years.” Lincoln Continental Concept – The future of quiet luxury Re-interpreting the concept of “quiet luxury”, elegant, effortlessly powerful and serene, the Continental Concept blends technology with exquisite craftsmanship to make drivers more comfortable and passengers more relaxed and entertained in an environment inspired by first-class travel. With a sleek silhouette and meticulous craftsmanship inside and out, the Continental Concept signals the arrival of a new face for Lincoln. New technology is a hallmark of the vehicle, with innovative new features appearing everywhere from the powerful LED matrix headlamps with laser-assist high beams to signature fullwidth tail lamps. Inside are the brand’s most sensual materials ever, including Venetian leather seat and door panels, Alcantara® seat inserts and armrests, rose gold trim and shearling wool carpet. The Concept’s rear seats are designed for greater privacy, from the position of the passengers to the SPD SmartGlass® which allows rearseat passengers to instantly tint the windows and block 99 percent of UV rays; rear-seat passengers can move front-

seat passengers forward with the touch of a button. Under the skin, the Continental Concept is powered by a Lincoln-exclusive 3.0-liter V6 EcoBoost® engine. Driveenhancing technologies including Lincoln Drive Control and Adaptive Steering further enhance the experience of getting behind the wheel. The Lincoln MKX – A spacious SUV experience The MKX further strengthens Lincoln’s position in the global medium-large size premium utility segment complementing the MKC introduced in late 2014. Inspired by the beauty of modern aircraft, the exterior design of the MKX is dramatic, with a modern, contemporary silhouette and well-balanced proportions. The remarkably spacious MKX boasts class-leading exterior dimensions and interior cabin volume, including unparalleled rearseat legroom. The exclusive Revel® audio system – an automotive first – leads a suite of new available features and technologies designed to enhance and personalize the luxury experience. The Lincoln MKX offers two available engine options, including a 2.0-liter EcoBoost® turbocharged four-cylinder engine and an advanced 2.7-liter twinturbocharged EcoBoost® engine projected to deliver 250kW of power and 542Nm of torque. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with pushbutton shift and SelectShift® The addition of an integral link rear suspension, upgrades to the body structure and chassis components make this new model the besthandling, best-riding and quietest Lincoln MKX ever. The MKX is now available for pre-sale with list prices ranging from RMB 479,000 to RMB 689,000 with vehicles scheduled to arrive in Lincoln Stores in the second half of 2015. The Lincoln Navigator - A new level of power and beauty The Lincoln Navigator has long been one of the brand’s most iconic models, embodying the world-class design and intuitive, innovative technology that sets the brand apart. The sleeker front end of the newly unveiled Navigator includes a newly designed hood while the interior of the vehicle seats up to eight people comfortably and delivers segment – leading cargo volume. A new 3.5-liter, twinturbocharged EcoBoost® engine, projected to deliver 582Nm of torque, delivers more power; available Lincoln Drive Control provides a smoother ride and electric powerassisted steering improves handling. With the debut of this full-size luxury SUV, the entire family of Lincoln SUVs has now been introduced to China. The Lincoln Navigator will arrive in China later this year, and ready to show Lincoln’s commitment to providing luxury automobiles. These three all-new vehicles will be showcased at Auto Shanghai 2015 alongside MKC and MKZ as well as their Presidential Series launched earlier this year. -www.media.lincoln.com

I like variety so every Sunday we make a batch of veggie and fruit muffins, mini vegetarian quiches, egg and bacon wraps or any other fun recipes we want to try. We keep enough for the week and put the rest in zip locks to freeze.

I initially started using a muffin tin when my daughter started snacking. It was great for mixing cut up fruits, veggies, cereal and cheese. I found myself making muffins, mini pizzas and even eggs. Before I knew it, my kiddo and I were using muffin tins almost daily. They are so versatile, easy to clean and the possibilities are endless.

DONNA STROFFOLINO

Simply the Best!

In 2005, after working for Teri and Al for 18 years, they gave my husband and me the opportunity to purchase Simply Hair & Nails: an icon of the Manahawkin business district. My name is Amy Otte; my husband Bill and I are the proud owners of Simply Hair in Manahawkin-celebrating 40 years of business! We were excited at the thought of owning a business. My husband Bill was a former business owner and knew a lot about running a business and I learned a lot working alongside Teri for over 18 years; so it made for an easy transition. Over the years, Teri taught me how to treat employees and clients, good business ethics, and pretty much everything in between. We work very hard to keep the reputation that Teri and Al built. We also feel it’s important to give back to our community as much as possible and are actively involved in supporting and donating to many local charities. We are very lucky to have the staff that we do. As a child, I knew I wanted to be a hair stylist from watching my big sister, Betty, who is our manager. She inspired me to become what I am today and I am lucky enough to have worked with her for the past 27 years. All of our girls are more like family to us than employees. Some have been with Simply Hair as long as I have and some are newer, but they are all very close and it really makes for a pleasant and fun environment.

Why Do Graduates Wear Funny Hats? Spring is a special time of year for many reasons. While the season signals new beginnings with fresh flowers, it’s also a time for endings, such as the end of the school year. Preschoolers graduate to kindergarten. Elementary students graduate to middle school. Middle school students graduate to high school. High school students graduate and follow life’s trail to college or the working world. Graduation is a joyous time to celebrate the milestone of academic achievement. It’s a time for family and friends to gather together to show how proud they are of what the graduates have accomplished. The graduation ceremony is a rite of passage that creates lifelong memories. If you’ve ever attended a graduation ceremony or seen pictures of one, you’ve surely noticed that everyone seems to be wearing the same outfit. And it’s not your normal everyday clothes, either. So what’s the deal with the robes and the funny hats? Those funny hats are called “mortarboards” because they resemble a tool used by bricklayers to hold mortar. In some areas, they’re also called “square academic caps” or “Oxford caps.” The mortarboard consists of a flat, square board attached to a skullcap, with a tassel buttoned to the center. Scholars believe the mortarboard is based on the biretta, a similar hat worn by Roman Catholic clergy. The biretta was commonly worn in the 14th and 15th centuries by students and artists. Mortarboards are paired with robes to form the

traditional graduation outfit known as “cap and gown.” Formal or “dress” clothing, such as a suit, is usually worn beneath the gown because graduation ceremonies are considered special occasions worthy of formal dress. The cap and gown combination can be traced back to the academic and clerical dress commonly worn at the medieval universities of Europe. These early universities didn’t have buildings, so students would usually meet at churches. Since these churches were unheated, historians believe students wore long gowns and caps for warmth. Some children are curious about the tassels that hang from mortarboards. In some cases, the color of the tassel matches school colors. At other times, special tassel colors are used to represent particular degrees, subject areas or achievements. It has become a tradition at many schools for all graduates to wear the tassel on one side until receiving their diplomas. After the graduating class is announced, the students then switch the tassel to the other side. After switching their tassel, many graduates also toss their caps into the air to celebrate. The hat-tossing tradition got started in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1912. That year, students at the U.S. Naval Academy became officers for the first time (instead of having to serve two more years as midshipmen) and flung their hats into the air spontaneously. Since that time, the tradition continued each year, and it has become a ritual at schools — even elementary schools — everywhere! -www.wonderopolis.org
