NEPTUNE, NJ (September 1, 2015) – The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, a member of the Feeding America® nationwide network of food banks, will observe Hunger Action MonthTM – a nationwide initiative designed to mobilize the public to take action on the issue of hunger and join the movement to help end hunger. Hunger advocates from Monmouth and Ocean counties and across the country are working together this September to shine a light on the issue of hunger and those people who face hunger in America – including over 131,000 in Monmouth and Ocean counties. “One in 10 people, including 40,000 children in our area struggle with hunger, and The FoodBank is eager to rally around Hunger Action Month as we continue our fight to solve this problem,” said Carlos Rodriguez,

On September 3, The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties will host an S.O.S. (Stuff Our Silo) Food and Fund Drive, as well as a day (9:00 AM - 9:00 PM) of volunteer fun with giveaways, local DJs, Live music from Musicians on a Misson, Food Trucks, Selfie-Station, and VIP guest drop-ins. About The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties: The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties distributes more than 11 million meals annually through a network of over 300 feeding programs. Hunger in Monmouth and Ocean Counties is no longer a crisis that can be remedied with emergency food alone. The FoodBank works toward long-term solutions to the chronic problem of food insecurity; with initiatives to support a community where all people at all times have access to enough food to maintain an active and healthy life. Through programs and services like our Culinary Training Program, Nutrition Education, and outreach programs such as SNAP (food stamps), VITA free tax assistance, and affordable healthcare, we are working to build food-secure communities. We feed the lines and work toward shortening them at the same time. The FoodBank receives the highest rating of 4 Stars from Charity Navigator. A total of 96 cents out of every dollar raised supports food and programs. For every dollar we receive, we can provide 3 meals. 2015 nissan VERSA NOTE Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com “10 Best Back-to-School Cars of 2015”

The Nissan Versa Note has been named by the editors at Kelley Blue Book to its annual KBB.com “10 Best Back to School Cars of 2015” list. It is the latest honor for Nissan’s popular entry-level hatchback from KBB.com, which has also included Versa Note on its “10 Tech-Savviest Cars Under $20,000” (2015) and “10 Coolest Cars Under $18,000” (2014) lists. The vehicles selected for this year’s “Back-to-School” recommendation had to be available for around $20,000 or less and meet the editors’ criteria of being “practical, functional, safe and affordable” – as well as “something fun and stylish.” The 2015 Versa Note has a starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price* (M.S.R.P.) of $14,180 USD, making it the lowest priced vehicle on the list. The five-passenger Versa Note cabin provides a spacious total interior volume of 112.9 cubic feet and ample cargo space of 18.8 cubic feet. A low cargo area liftover height provides easy loading and unloading of heavy or bulky objects. The interior also offers front headroom of 40.8 inches and rear legroom of 38.3 inches. Interior versatility is further enhanced with the standard 60/40-split fold-down

rear seat, large flat cargo area and an available Divide-NHide® Adjustable Floor. The 2015 Versa Note is offered in five well-equipped models: S, S Plus, SV, SR and SL. Each is powered by a 1.6-liter DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder. Versa Note S features a 5-speed manual transmission. The S Plus, SV, SR and SL models are equipped with a nextgeneration Nissan Xtronic transmission, helping them achieve 40 miles per gallon highway fuel economy. The long list of Versa Note equipment includes standard Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System, along with available Nissan Intelligent Key®, SiriusXM Satellite Radio (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately), heated front seats and 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.

and Mobile Apps, Hands-Free Text Messaging Assistant, RearView Monitor, Bluetooth® Streaming Audio and class-exclusive** Around View® Monitor, which provide a virtual 360° view of objects around the vehicle, with selectable split-screen close-ups of the front, rear and curb views, helping students maneuver the Versa Note into tight spots around campus or anywhere else they go.. -www.nissannews.com

Links for Life is an exciting day-long golf outing that “ll be both recreational and educational to benefit Southern Ocean Medical Center’s cancer care initiatives. This is unfortunately essential clue to the documented 83 new cases of cancer that are diagnosed in Ocean County weekly. There are many facets to this planned local expansion, the most significant is the addition of a TrueBeam linear accelerator, the most advanced radiation technology avail able. I hope you will join me in supporting the hospital, and would appreciate your support to help make this outing a success. Sponsoring one of the listed opportunities Shown here will help provide the funding needed to bring more awareness and medical support to this critically important issue.

As we prepare for Arizona Cardinals training camp reporting date of July 31st, it is time for our annual look at the roster player by player. I look at what they’ve done, where they are now and how I project each player’s status at the end of camp. We go from A to Z and continue with ILB Glenn Carson. Carson is entering his second season with the Cardinals out of Penn State. 2014 season: Carson was an undrafted free agent who made the final 53 man roster out of his first training camp last season, played sparingly off and on in 2014. He was inactive most weeks but did see action in five games. He ended up with seven tackles on the season. 2015 season projection: Linebacker is still one of those positions you never know what’s going to happen until the final cuts are made and even then don’t be so sure the guy that makes it last long. The was the position Carson was in last season and look for the situation to be about the same in this year’s camp. It was his final preseason game in 2014 that convinced the Cardinals to give him a shot on the regular season roster. It probably comes down again to the last couple of roster spots to determine if he has done enough to make it. I think it’s real close based on current personnel. -www.raisingzona.com

Since I was a young child I was taught to treat other people the way you want to be treated. This was implanted in my heart and mind by my parents. So a couple of weeks ago I went for a run at the Ocean Acres park, and there it was a chance for me to act in what my parents very dearly had taught me to do. As I came to a slow pace in my running, I noticed a mother and two children panicking because their car would not start. I approached the mother and told her that I would get my jumper cables and help her. She kept telling me to not stop my exercise because she had AAA. I persisted in telling her that it was okay to help her and that it would make me feel good, if I was able to make the car start. So I hooked the cables to both batteries and.... I turned the key and the engine started. This act that was passed on from my parents to me works, but it would be a great thing if other people would just take the time to help others. Look around each day and you’ll see opportunities to help others!

“On the freeway, [the vehicle will] be on inductive rails, not using its own battery. Of course, the batteries will be much more capable.

Bob Lutz, 83, has been around longer than most in the auto industry. The former General Motors, BMW, Ford and Chrysler executive knows a lot about change because he’s seen so much of it. At a recent Automotive News roundtable discussion (see Pages 23-26), Lutz offered his vision of personal mobility in the future. He didn’t say when it would happen, but he was fairly explicit about what it would look like. “The end state is going to be the fully autonomous, fully electric module with no capability for the driver to steer it or exercise any sort of command. You will call it up, it will arrive at the domicile, you’ll get in, input the destination and go to the freeway.

Labor Day Weekend Football at Southern Regional. The Varsity football team will host Central Regional on Friday, September 4, 2015 at 7pm in the first game for both schools for the 2015 season. $3 for Adults and $1 for senior citizens/ students. Please come out and support the Rams!

“On the freeway, it will merge seamlessly into a stream of other standardized modules that are traveling at 120, 150 miles an hour. It doesn’t matter. You have a blending of rail-type transportation with individual transportation. “Then, as you approach your exit, your module with split off and go into deceleration lanes, take the exit, [and] go to your final destination. You will be billed for the transportation. You key in your credit card

“What we’re seeing now are various transitional elements -- shared cars, Uber, all of these things. It’s on-demand transportation without the need for actually owning a car.

“You could look at Uber as an intermediate stage, a stepping stone on the way to fully autonomous. They basically serve the same purpose as autonomous cars, except there’s a driver and in most cases, there’s an internal combustion engine.

“The [next stage] will be autonomous driving on the freeway, which is pretty much feasible now. That doesn’t solve the problem of getting off the freeway and going to the final destination, which is still going to be hands on the wheel.

“If we look at that end point of these standardized modules ... [they] have to be the same length, the same width, the same shape and so forth. You think, how is the automobile industry going to supply that nondifferentiated demand?

“That is a scary proposition. That’s where you have to worry about people like Apple and Google, because 90 percent of the content of the vehicle is going to be in the electronic systems and the connectivity and, of course, the battery. The module itself is going to be relatively trivial.”

THE PARENTS’ GUIDE TO:

BACK-TO-SCHOOL

Review all of the information. Review the material sent by the school as soon as it arrives. These packets include important information about your child’s teacher, room number, school supply requirements, sign ups for after-school sports and activities, school calendar dates, bus transportation, health and emergency forms, and volunteer opportunities. Mark your calendar. Make a note of important dates, especially backto-school nights. This is especially important if you have children in more than one school and need to juggle obligations. Arrange for a babysitter now, if necessary. Make copies. Make copies of all your child’s health and emergency information for reference. Television is distracting for many children, and your child will arrive at school better prepared to learn each morning if he or she has engaged in less passive activities. Visit school with your child. If your child is young or in a new school, visit the school with your child. Meeting the teacher, locating their classroom, locker, lunchroom, etc., will help ease pre-school anxieties and also allow your child to ask questions about the new environment. Call ahead to make sure the teachers will be available to introduce themselves to your child. Minimize clothes shopping woes. Buy only the essentials. Summer clothes are usually fine during the early fall, but be sure to have at least one pair of sturdy shoes. Check with your school to confirm dress code guidelines. Common concerns include extremely short skirts and shorts, low rise pants, bare midriffs, spaghetti strap or halter tops, exposed undergarments, and clothing that have antisocial messages.

Love Letters To Causeway Dear Mr. Brody, The Ocean County Long Term Recovery Group (OCLTRG) is pleased to present this request for your review. As you may know, our non-‐profit organization is a trusted, nonpartisan, community partner that continues to provide coordinated recovery efforts to the victims of disasters affecting Ocean County and its surrounding areas. Over the past two years, we have cultivated and built a strong network of non-‐profit, faith-‐based, business and government partners sharing in the mission of recovery and rebuilding. Our momentum and efficiency continue to increase, but our work is far from complete. OCLTRG has been very successful in leveraging this network to help households overcome barriers that might otherwise delay, or even prohibit, their return to normalcy. We provide support and education, which enables homeowners to adhere to the complex regulations governing grants awarded for recovery and rebuilding. Through dedicated teams of volunteers and staff, to date, we have raised more than $7.1 million from the philanthropic community to support the work of OCLTRG and assist the State’s recovery and rebuilding efforts.

Ryan’s Recreational Review

By: Ryan Tacovsky Sales Associate and Outdoor Enthusiast

There is more to do than just hunting and fishing in the outdoors of NJ. We have plenty of hiking and biking trails in most of the same parks that you can hunt and fish in.Right in Barnegat they just built a new park down past nautilus drive. On bay ave there is a really nice hiking trail there that takes you past old cranberry bogs and some nice scenery. Another great thing to do is go rent some kayaks and head out on one of the many lakes we have around here in NJ. An amazing place to go do this at is Lake Oswego. Lake Oswego is out by Bass River. They have a nice relaxing 8 mile kayak trip you can take out there. You can bring food and drinks and make a day out of it

Based on our successes in Ocean County, OCLTRG firmly believes that it can be a valuable partner with the State to help accelerate the pace of recovery and rebuilding in the 9 most impacted NJ counties, getting families back in their homes faster and with a full recovery that includes compliance with grant funding regulations. Without continued funding support from our government partners, the fragile recovery and rebuilding framework that is finally gaining momentum and beginning to see progress will be compromised. If the recovery fails to progress, it will be to the detriment of all New Jersey residents who will ultimately have to pay the price with a negative long-‐term economic impact. The OCLTRG respectfully requests inclusion in the State’s CDBG-‐DR Action Plan (Tranche 3) with an appropriation of $20 million over 2016 and 2017 to fund the continuation and extension of long term recovery services for RREM qualified households that have not yet completed their RREM project. Thank you very much for your consideration. For further information, contact me at smarticek@oceancountyltrg.org or by phone at (732) 569-‐3484. Warmest regards,

Sue Marticek Director Ocean County Long Term Recovery Group

Mike Gesicki Will Be Penn State’s Breakout Player in 2015

with the friends and family. There are about 10 different spots you can stop along the way and hang out and go swimming. If you do not own a kayak and want to do this there are a few places around town that you can rent some from. There is a nice place right in Tuckerton across from tips hardware you can rent them for $20.00 for the day from.

By Jared Slanina | www.blackshoediaries.com Despite the depth and talent at the tight end position, Mike Gesicki is poised for a breakout season. Let’s take a closer look at the reasons why:

Development The knee injury to Adam Breneman at the onset of the 2014 season basically guaranteed that Gesicki would not be using his redshirt in his first year of eligibility. While he did not set the world on fire, Gesicki showed flashes of great potential as a true freshman. He finished the year with 11 catches and 114 yards, without finding his way into the end zone. A solid year for someone who was just a few months removed from attending the prom, but just "a fairly decent afternoon" for teammate and reigning Big Ten receptions leader DaeSean Hamilton. The experience from 2014 should pay dividends as Gesicki now has the understanding of what to expect, and what is needed of him, to succeed at the next level. He appeared in every game as a freshman and went up against some of the Big Ten’s best, which should allow him to enter his sophomore season fully prepared to become an impact player. Gesicki’s biggest weakness as a freshman was his shortcomings as a blocker. There’s a fantastic chance that changes quite a bit in 2015. Gesicki entered Penn State listed at 215 pounds, but obviously spent his time wisely in the weight room and has bulked up to 255 in a rather short period. The extra strength and mass should have a significant impact on his ability to become a well-rounded tight end who can stay on the field in nearly all situations. Entering his sophomore year, Gesicki has reached the point in his physical development where he will more closely resemble a big Ten athlete rather than a skinny kid just out of high school. Athleticism You know the phrase, "Too good to keep off the field"? That may be the best argument for why Gesicki is poised for a breakout season. The true sophomore has off-the-charts athleticism that, if used properly, will create major match-up problems for opposing defenses. It might be cliché, but Gesicki is too big for a safety to cover him, and too fast for even an extremely athletic linebacker to keep up in coverage. Gesicki stands at 6’6’’ and 252 pounds, yet has the explosive speed that is typically reserved for 180 pound slot receivers. He is also blessed with a tremendous vertical leap- before playing his first game as a freshman, Gesicki recorded a 40" vertical.

To put this in perspective, only nine (older and more developed) players exceeded 40" at that year at the NFL combine. Just imagine what Gesicki can do in the red zone this fall with his combination of size and leaping ability. Even the very best individual defenders would have one heck of a difficult time defending him on an island. Opportunity The biggest roadblock to Gesicki’s breakout is the genuine possibility of a lack of opportunity. Gesicki will have two more experienced and extremely talented tight ends in front of him to start the season in Kyle Carter and redshirt sophomore Adam Breneman. Both would be the probable starters for most big Ten teams, and should receive plenty of playing time. On top of that, there is also a logjam of young talent at the wide receiver position, which means there are many playmakers with just so many pass attempts to share. Carter and Breneman both provide tremendous value and will see plenty of well-earned playing time. However, Gesicki may cause the type of match-up nightmares that will allow him to rise to the number one tight end by the end of the season. Additionally, Breneman and Carter each have had nagging injuries during the past few years that have forced them to miss time. If this unfortunate trend continues, Gesicki may find himself anointed to the top spot at his position. Gesicki is not the only one who should benefit from the experience of being thrust into action so early into his career. The offensive line, which was made up mostly of players who would be learning from afar under normal circumstances in 2014, should see improvement following a horrendous season that ended with Christian Hackenberg being sacked more often than any other Big Ten quarterback in conference history. We all know what Hackenberg is capable of when given ample time to scan the field, so with an improved line Gesicki could have the opportunity to make big play after big play in the passing game. With even a somewhat improved line, Hackenberg has the ability to destroy nearly all of the single-season passing records at Penn State. If this happens, expect Gesicki to play a large role in rewriting the record books.

You can be a business man in the city or a construction worker on the main land, it is always nice to just get out there and enjoy the outdoors. Once again this is Ryan Tacovsky here at causeway ford telling you to get out there and enjoy yourself with your friends and family. Don’t waist the summer away sitting in side, have fun and do it safely.

Lincoln Continental Concept

30-way Seats Preview new era of Wellness and Luxury seating.

“Private aviation caters to no-compromise clients,” said Senters-McDermott. “These seats certainly seem as if they spring from an elevated, nocompromise approach.”

Our Gang Player’s Nominated!!

Support for the lower body and legs is provided by two extending thigh cushions, each independently adjustable. The cushions can be extended or moved up or down.

Feeling refreshed and rejuvenated – even after a long trip – is possible with the 30-way seats introduced in the Lincoln Continental Concept. “The next frontier to serve the luxury automotive client is a seat that conforms to and supports the body – a seat that feels as if it were personally tailored for you each time,” said Johnathan Line, advanced seat innovation supervisor and technical expert. In addition to greater adjustability than previously offered to better tailor and personalize their experience, improved comfort comes from a patented flexible comfort carrier. This suspension system of plastic and a thin layer of foam flexes around the body, helping take stress off the shoulders and neck. “The new design of the Lincoln 30-way seats goes beyond the one-size-fits-all design seen in the past,” said Line. “It conforms to your body and supports it in ways not previously possible.” Lincoln seats engineers studied first-class and private airplane seats for possible applications. Lisa SentersMcDermott, CEO of Jet Senters Aviation, believes luxury drivers will welcome the influence of high-end aviation

This allows the driver to further personalize the adjustments and give support as needed to each leg independently, recognizing the different needs for each leg - one is at rest while the other engages the pedals. “That planned relaxing weekend getaway can get off to a sour start if you’re tired and stressed upon arrival – you end up needing a rest for your rest,” said luxury travel expert Dena Roché. “A seat that offers a wide range of adjustments, more support and massage and other amenities can help leave the driver refreshed, alert and ready to enjoy that getaway.” Additional comfort is provided by massage functions in the back and cushion. The rolling-pattern massage is designed to help reduce muscle fatigue, aches and pains by keeping muscles and blood vessels stimulated in the legs and lower back. The seats can be heated, and cooling vents are included as well. “Creating a seat that tailors itself to your body and can be adjusted to the situation to make you more comfortable can be a big benefit,” said Christopher Kempski, an ergonomist for Ergo Concepts, LLC. “In my field, we develop solutions for industries that create the best possible fit between workers and their tasks – in essence reducing fatigue. When the body tires, the mind follows, so keeping the body refreshed is vital.” -www.media.lincoln.com

Crossover What / suv aug / sep is what? By: Jason Halliday

It’s that time again for another awesome article… did you miss me? I’m here to talk about what makes a Crossover a Crossover and an SUV an SUV! Believe it or not, there is a lot of confusion about the two. There are some instances when I’m going over the technology in a new Ford or Lincoln with a customer they tell me they wanted an SUV but realized they didn’t really “need” an SUV or that a Crossover didn’t have enough room. I will show you the differences between them both. A Crossover (or CUV) is exactly what it sounds like; it’s a crossover of both a car and SUV. I know it sounds weird, almost like a Chihuahua / Doberman combo. You get the roominess of an SUV without the high prices that come along with it. They are generally smaller and are usually built on an actual car frame (uni-body frames). They have smaller engines and “zip” around like a sedan would. With all mainstream car companies using similar (sometimes the same) parts, companies are more focused on the looks than designing separate platforms for every model. Some companies are bolder than others when it comes to Crossover design; the new Nissan Rogue is one such example. It was pretty boring when you look at the old one vs. the new. There are others that like to stick to a design that works (look at BMW or Mercedes). The Crossover/SUV category has finally surpassed the sedan as the most popular type of vehicle in the US. Next time you are driving around just look around and notice how many Crossovers are actually on the road! An SUV is usually branded in the same category; however, it is a different animal altogether. SUV’s are mostly based on truck platforms and are “on frame” vehicles (the body is bolted to the frame), there are some exceptions like a Wrangler that isn’t from a truck but is built like it. For the most part they take the utility of a pickup truck and enclose it to make it more appealing to people that need the performance but without needing an open truck bed. Just like trucks nowadays SUV’s are every bit as comfortable as a full size luxury car but you can still go “muddin” or drive it on the beach (try that with your MKS or Towncar!) SUV’s used to only have V8’s at a minimum; however, the current craze (in order to get the numbers up for the CAFÉ standards) is turbo charging smaller engines, they did this during the gas crisis of the 70’s also! Like it or hate it, it’s here to stay with a lot of V8 engines being set aside for Turbo or Smaller Diesel engines. SUV’s will ride and drive like your buddy’s pickup (that could be good or bad). An SUV passenger will notice more body roll and usually a bouncier non car like feel. You will have gobs of horsepower along with enough room to fit your whole basement and then some. Do most people really “need” something like a Navigator or Suburban… not really to be honest? My family got along fine sticking all the sports equipment in a regular sedan for all the games and everything. You buy an SUV because you want to or a crossover just won’t cut it. Whether you are something from a Micro-Compact to Full Size SUV driver, the best part about this country is you have a choice! At least now, you will understand the difference between an SUV and CUV.

Long Beach Township – Long Beach Township Beach Patrol has generously donated two lifeguard stands to St. Francis Community Center’s indoor pool. For many years the Long Beach Township Beach Patrol has had the regular use of St. Francis Aquatic Center’s indoor pool for life guard training and swim tests. St. Francis Community Center is located at 4700 long Beach Blvd., Long Beach Township NJ. Mike Thompson, Recreation Coordinator, had this to say: “To be able to help the Long Beach Township Beach Patrol and then receiving help from them has made this a fantastic relationship.” The Aquatic Center, open to the public, services members of the community and vacationers alike. The pool is used by the Southern Regional High School and Barnegat High School swim teams. Long Beach Island and Beach Haven School Districts also use the pool during the school year for Physical Education classes. There are many Aquatic classes and swim lessons available year round. Pool passes are available to purchase on a daily basis – no membership required. Ask The Expert! When Do You Need an Antibiotic?

Understanding the Difference between Viral and Bacterial Infections

way is that you catch the virus, and the other way is to get a vaccination. Vaccines exist for viruses such as chicken pox, shingles, and influenza (flu), just to name a few. Can an antibiotic cure a viral infection?

HarjinderS.Bedi, M.D., a board certified internal medicine practitioner at Southern Ocean Medical Center, sheds some light on the difference between a viral and bacterial infection, and what can be done to find some relief. What causes infections? There are two main types of germs that cause most infections. These are viruses and bacteria. Viruses cause things like colds and flu, runny noses, most coughs, sore throats, and bronchitis. Bacteria cause conditions such as ear infections, sinus infections, and strep throat. Some viruses cause symptoms that resemble bacterial infections, and some bacteria can cause symptoms that resemble viral infections. A doctor can determine what type of illness you have and recommend the proper type of treatment. Can you kill a virus? Outside the body, viruses can be killed by household items like detergents and bleach. So be sure to wipe down surfaces at home and in the office if you or a loved one is ill. This can help reduce the chances of the virus spreading to others. Inside the body, the immune system provides defense by producing antibodies against specific viruses. You can develop immunity to fight a future viral infection in two ways. One

Unfortunately, antibiotics do not work against viruses. There’s no cure for illnesses like the common cold or flu, but there are antiviral medications that can interfere with a virus’s progression and reduce the length of time you are ill. A medication like Tamiflu® is an example of these types of antiviral drugs that have been developed to treat influenza. It is important to note that antiviral medications are only prescribed when a patient meets certain criteria or guidelines. For example, the patient must receive the medication within the first 48 hours of developing symptoms in order for it to be effective. It might also be prescribed for high risk patients who have other underlying medical conditions. Your health care provider will use their judgment and decide if an antiviral medication can be helpful.

When does an antibiotic help? Antibiotics are powerful drugs used to treat certain illnesses. However, antibiotics do not cure everything, and unnecessary antibiotics can even be harmful. They are prescribed to treat bacterial infections. If your physician prescribes an antibiotic, it is important to take the entire course of medication for the days indicated. Even if you start to feel better, complete the entire prescription as indicated by your physician. Failure to do this can result in the illness returning, or reducing the ability for the medication to work well in the future. Tips to recover from a virus Although there is no cure for a virus, treatments for the symptoms include medications for congestion, bed rest, increased fluid intake, and fever reducing medications. If you experience symptoms such as difficulty breathing or chest pain, persistent fever, vomiting or the inability to keep fluids down, painful swallowing, persistent coughing, persistent congestion and headache, then contact your physician right away.
