WOW! Bridge Walk 2015 Bridges Gaps Proudly serving Manahawkin and surrounding communities

Number 23

By: Corrine Ruff

ManahawkinSkip Martin of Causeway Ford, Lincoln, Honda, and Nissan just hit an unbelievable milestone! He just sold his 12,000th car! Samantha Walters, daughter of Greg and Laurie Walters purchased a 2016 Honda Accord. It’s ironic, simply because Walters Construction purchases many vehicles each year and Samantha just happens to be the founder’s granddaughter! Skip’s journey began in May of 1972 when he graduated from Salem University. Within a couple of weeks, he signed a teaching contract at Toms River North high school. That job would not start until September. This is where the story unfolds. Needing a summer job, Skip applied at Joe Bennett Chevrolet thinking it would be a great summer job. He started his Summer job right when Bennett’s was moving from Bay Ave to Rte. 72 where Causeway Nissan is now located. To continue reading about Skip’s success, turn to page 3.

Community has always been important to my family. Maybe coming from a family of airline pilots and being able to see the world, we return with ideas to implement. One such idea has become a tradition for the island and mainland communities of Long Beach Island and Stafford Township. Each September, for the last 6 years, our island and mainland communities unite on the Causeway. The event is the Community Bridge Walk. Five participating schools: Stafford, Southern, All Saints, Beach Haven and the LBI Schools rally friends and family to walk the 3.1 mile route from the Old Causeway Steak and Oyster House to the beautiful Waterfront Park in Ship Bottom. The Bridge, all 2.1 miles, is the center of the action. Atop the main span most Walker’s stop to take a picture with our Flag. People of all ages take part as we “Bridge our Communities. Paws on the Causeway is not something you normally see, but Bailey B, Taylor Ham, Marker and Toby are some of the dogs who make the trek each year. The youngest walker this year, a one month old little boy, Boone – who journeyed up for

The Mangino Family

the Bridge Walk from Texas- scaled the bridge in a stroller, with his parents, Heather and Ron and sister Hadley. The most senior Walker was a beautiful 94 great-great grandmother a few years ago! Melanie walked with her the whole way and was honored to stand on the main span and hear her say: “I did it. I always wanted to walk this Bridge. It’s beautiful up here. I knew it would be.” The Bridge Walk took shape in 2009, when my family visited friends in Mackinac, MI and saw the annual Bridge Walk. Ava, 7 at the time, asked why there wasn’t a Bridge Walk on our bridge. Jackson, 5yrs old at the time, drew a picture of the Causeway with stick-figure

people holding hands across the main span. They are now 13 and 11 and have 6 years of Bridge Walks under their belt.

When the initial idea was born, there were 3 key planners- Joe DiPietro, Melanie Magaziner and I. We are the planners todaysix years in. Melanie offered to host the event at her restaurant the Mud City Crab House in 2010 to 750 people for the very first Bridge Walk. The formula: host a celebratory kick-off with music from the Southern Regional Marching Band, led by Band Director Andrew Wright. Presentation of the Colors from the Jr. Air Force ROTC from Southern Regional, singing of the National Anthem, Hadley Magaziner and name a Bridge Walk Hero to lead the Walk.

This year the heroes selected were the Mangino Family from Stafford Township. Since the first Walk, all Military personnel and First Responders walk as guests. The Walk is a fundraiser for the 5 area schools, but more importantly a (fun)raiser for the students, the parents, the teachers, businesses and anyone and everyone who celebrates in the spirit of Community. A year of planning brings the Bridge Walk to life. D.O.T permits and Town Council approval is needed from both Stafford Township and Ship Bottom Borough. Bus transportation from the LBI Board of Education must be approved. All sponsors must be secured. It’s a machine with a lot of moving parts. Each school rallies their Walker’s. The sponsors that support the event are businesses that recognize the importance of bonding and building a strong sense of community.

The Causeway Family of Dealerships made a connection with the Event instantly. Sharing the name Causeway and the community values represented by the experience, the Wintrode Family has been the Main Sponsor of the Bridge Walk for the last 5 years. Causeway Honda Service Director Paul Shutak and Director of Advertising and Marketing Joe Stroffolino attend the event and welcome everyone with a great pre-walk pep speech that rallies the crowd. New 2016 Nissan Altima

The new Altima adopts the latest design language for a fresh new look

When Nissan rolled out a series of futuristic auto show concept vehicles a few years ago, few people believed that the boldly styled designs would ever see the light of a Nissan showroom. Yet against the odds they started coming. First, there was the Nissan Resonance Concept, a wild mid-size crossover concept that evolved into the 2015 Murano. Then Nissan Sport Sedan Concept strongly influenced the radical new 2016 Nissan Maxima. And, the new Nissan design language is making its way into more and more vehicles – including Nissan’s best-selling vehicle in the United States, the Nissan Altima. For the new 2016 Altima the design team adopted key aspects of both the exterior and interior styling themes to give the popular mid-size sedan a fresh new appearance, including the “Energetic Flow” exterior styling theme and “Gliding Wing” interior layout. The front end of the 2016 Altima offers the most dramatic change, since all panels and pieces forward of the A-pillars are new – fascia, bumper, fenders, hood and lights. Two key elements are the redesigned V-Motion grille and boomerang-shape headlights, similar to those found on the Murano and Maxima. The look is dramatically different from the 2015 Altima design, with a wide, deeply sculpted lower bumper, integrated fog lights (SR, SV and SL models) and prominent chrome-trimmed grille. The reshaped headlight units incorporate halogen high beam and projector low beam lights. LED

The already extensive Altima color palette adds a new Deep Blue Pearl color for 2016, along with Java Metallic, Brilliant Silver, Gun Metallic, Super Black, Cayenne Red, Pearl White, Glacier White and Storm Blue. Finishing off the new exterior appearance are dramatic new 17inch and 18-inch machine-finish aluminum-alloy wheel designs. projector low beam lights and LED signature Daytime Running Lights that sweep into the wide raised hood are standard on Altima 3.5 SR and 3.5 SL grades (late availability) and available on 2.5 SR and 2.5 SL. Altima SR adds smoked headlight bezels. The rear of the new Altima is marked by a new sculpted bumper with a dark lower accent, a new trunk lid – with integrated rear spoiler on Altima SR models – and lower, wider boomerangshaped combination lights that help provide a more expressive, higher quality appearance when approaching the vehicle from behind. The four-piece combination lights incorporate the tail- and stop lights, turn lamps and backup lights. Along with the revised appearance, the new Altima also offers a 10 percent improvement in coefficient of drag – to 0.26 Cd from the previous 0.29 Cd*. The changes come from the addition of an active grille shutter (three percent gain), underfloor aero cover additions (three percent) and the new front and rear fascia and windshield designs (four percent).

The 2016 Altima’s refined interior design follows the new “Gliding Wing” design language, shared with Murano and also the new Rogue. Central to the new look is the revised C-stack with available 5.0-inch and 7.0-inch displays for the NissanConnectSM with Mobile Apps and available NissanConnect Navigation with Mobile Apps. In addition, the standard Zero Gravity front seats have been reshaped and the woven cloth seating and door panel materials feature a more open weave pattern, providing a premium look and feel throughout the Altima interior. The steering wheel has also been refined for 2016. The twin cupholders on the center console now accommodate mug handles in response to customer input. The new Altima SR grade includes blue sport interior accents on the steering wheel, door panels and seats – to contrast the Charcoal interior color. The SR also features a leather-wrapped steering wheel, paddle shifters, and leather-wrapped gear shifter. -www.nissannews.com

WOW!

Continued from page 1

Skip Martin with Samantha Walters his 12,000th customer

When you think of trucks you think of the world famous Ford F-Series pickups. The Ford Super Duty has been the fastest selling and most used Heavy Duty pickup on the market. The real question is how innovative can you get with a “work” truck? Well… According to the engineers at Ford, you haven’t seen anything yet! Ford stripped the Super Duty (Referred in this article as SD from now on) right down to the frame to see what they were working with. Then realized they already had a great idea with the all new F-150 models and started re-engineering that technology over to the SD with a Fully Boxed High Strength Steel frame with Thru welded cross members. The SD also gets Ford’s amazing new Military Grade Aluminum body; if you are still standoffish about having the body aluminum… you really need to see one in person. When you tap on the side of the body it sounds denser than the sheet metal body. The Suspension and power train was modified to allow for bigger and bigger loads. Ford also upgraded the looks on the new SD; they

wanted to make it fit in more with the new F-150. They took the rounded lights and panels and make them boxy like the new F-150. They also made not only the Ford badge bigger, but the front grille new looks like a wall of chrome coming at you! They also incorporated the Ring of LED’s around the head lights from the F-150 and brought over the LED Head and Tail lights also for better visibility. The engines are the 6.2 & 6.8 V8’s both with propane capability and the 6.7lt Power stroke Diesel which is the tried and true heavy hauler that’s good for over 31,000 pounds towing weight. The interior is completely redone with high quality luxury appointments for the top of the line model sharing in the same look at the 2015 F-150. It even has the huge productivity screen nestled in between the tach and speedo. You can still opt for the work interior that will stand up to years of abuse, because this truck you can convert it into anything you need for your company. You can also get the 360 degree camera so you can see whets going on around you, as well as a trailer camera so you can see what’s really going on behind you! If you get towing and need to slow down there’s also an improved exhaust braking (aka Jake Brake) that will slow you down without killing your brakes. If you are in need of a truck that can handle everything but do it in style… then look no further than the 2017 Ford Super Duty! For more details go to www.ford.com/futurevehicles/ and check it out today!

They moved to the location on July 4th weekend! Skip had a great summer selling cars. Mr. Bennet asked Skip if he would work a few nights and Saturdays while he was teaching. That following summer “I had the hardest decision to make” says Skip. “Continue selling cars or to teach.” Skip said “I loved them both, it was easy selling cars and it was a year around job. I flipped a coin and said a prayer and 42 years later I can honestly say I made the right choice!” Skip still sells to his original customers from those early days. Most of which were friends, classmates and neighbors. Skip is now selling to second and third generations of his customers! “When people trust you the sends in their friends and family then you have more friends!” says Martin. “I still get as much enjoyment now, as when I sold my first vehicle to Charlotte and Dave Comly, who are still my customers!” For the last 22 years I have been with Causeway Ford, Lincoln, Honda and Nissan. Causeway is a great family owned dealership where customer satisfaction is a very high priority. Causeway goes the extra mile to earn your business. Skip is the epitome of that commitment to customer satisfaction. He has sold over 12,000 vehicles while maintaining over 96% customer satisfaction rating! That is simply exceptional! Causeway is more than proud to have Skip Martin as a representative on the sales floor and in the community. “I would like to thank each and every one of my customers and friends for their loyalty in helping me to achieve this great milestone” -Skip Martin

Honda Builds 30 Millionth Bartucci Automobile in North America Chiropractic Makes Adjustment Honda auto production in North America is supported by engine manufacturing operations in Anna, Ohio; Lincoln, Ala.; Alliston, Ontario and Celaya, Mexico and by the production of automatic transmissions in Russells Point, Ohio, Tallapoosa, Ga., and Celaya. Total investment in Honda’s North American auto, engine and transmission facilities tops $17 billion, with these operations now employing more than 28,000 associates.

Honda marked a major milestone as the company’s eight auto plants in the United States, Canada and Mexico reached the 30 million mark in total automobile production. Honda started auto production in North America in Marysville, Ohio, on Nov. 1, 1982. Last year, more than 97 percent of the Honda and Acura automobiles sold in the U.S. were produced in North America. “The production of 30 million automobiles in North America is the result of the support we have received from our customers and the communities that serve as a strong foundation of our operations in North America,” said Takuji Yamada, president of Honda North America, Inc. “This is an incredible achievement by Team Honda – including the tremendous dedication and teamwork of our associates, past and present, together with our suppliers, dealers and business partners – all focused on creating joy for our customers.” Honda was the first Japanese automaker to begin production of automobiles in the U.S. and North America. Since production started in Marysville, Honda has established automobile manufacturing operations in East Liberty, Ohio; Lincoln, Ala.; Greensburg, Ind.; Alliston, Ontario; Canada; El Salto, Jalisco, Mexico and Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico. A fifth U.S. auto plant, the Performance Manufacturing Center, in Marysville will begin production next year of the next-generation Acura NSX supercar.

Honda’s automotive manufacturing operations produce 11 different models, including five passenger cars and six light trucks, and have the capacity to produce 1.92 million automobiles each year. Honda is supported by a network of 713 suppliers in North America, with purchasing of parts and components last year exceeding $26 billion.-www.hondanews.com

How to Make Leaf Clean Up Easy This Fall

Q: I’m debating whether to invest in some high-quality equipment to help pick up the leaves in our yard this fall, or hire a pro to tackle the job. How much would I need to spend on tools if I go the DIY route? A: The problem with hiring a landscaper to do your fall leaf cleanup isn’t necessarily the $250 to $500-plus price tag, it’s that this is not a once-a-season job. In many regions of the country, autumn lasts weeks and weeks, so it takes a handful of cleanups to keep your property neat and tidy. (This is especially true if you have a neighbor who waits until absolutely every branch is bare before he’ll lift a rake, ensuring that his leaves continue to blow onto your lawn until the first frost glues them to the ground.) The good news is that do-ityourself leaf removal doesn’t have to be a blister-raising, hamstringstressing effort. With the right tools, the leaves can be gone before the first afternoon football game kicks off. Here’s what you need to make that happen. Lawnmower: Throughout the spring and summer, setting the mower to maximum height is one of the best things you can do for your lawn’s health. But come fall, drop it down as low as it’ll go without scalping the turf. Short grass gives leaves less to get caught on as they drift around the neighborhood. It also means the mower will vaporize any leaves that have already fallen (assuming a light coating). Use a mulching mower—meaning the kind without a bag that pulverizes clippings and drops them back into the turf to feed it—such as the Toro 20370 ($309 at Home Depot). Leaf Blower: Raking is hard work, but so is using a wimpy hand-held leaf blower. The typical plug-in version isn’t powerful enough to extinguish a birthday candle, never mind move a pile of damp

leaves—or a single well-nestled acorn. If you’re of strong enough body to rake, you’re probably of strong enough body to handle a gas-powered backpack blower, such as Husqvarna’s top-of-theline 356BT ($439 at amazon. com). These machines have flexible hoses and variable speed triggers, so you have plenty of power to remove those leaves stuck in your azaleas and also a gentle enough touch for cleaning up around a screen porch without sending dirt inside. (Just please wear ear protection, because even this quieter-than-most version is quite loud.) Tarp: Don’t try to transport a big pile of leaves all the way to the woods for disposal- or the curb if your municipality picks them up with a vacuum truck— using a blower, not even a backpack one. Instead, rake or blow them onto a tarp and drag them to their destination or, better yet, blow them onto the EZ Leaf Hauler, $40 from plowhearth.com, which has three sidewalls to help corral and relocate large piles. Bagger: If you need to pack your leaves into brown paper bags for municipal curb pickup, check out the Leaf Chute ($9 at Lowe’s or Home Depot). It’s a low-tech, three-sided plastic tube that props open the empty bag and has a wide mouth for easy loading. Once the bag is full enough to stand on its own, remove the chute and pack in as many more leaves as you can stamp down. Your Kids: Leaf pickup is an ideal chore for the young people who are eating you out of house and home. Start them with rakes— and quality, well-fitted work gloves—and let them learn the old fashioned way. Then, once they’re capable rakers, understand the basics of the job, and are ready for power tools, let them grab a hold of that sweet new blower. -www.time.com

If you are not ready it can be a brutal thing and can be very unrewarding. With selling cars it’s a month to month success, but with hunting it is more of a day by day thing. You can have a bad month with selling cars and you can have a bad hunt with deer. The more prepared you are with both the better chances of getting a sale or getting a deer you have.

Now along with knowing when the deer will be coming through your spot you also want to be warm and comfortable while you sit out there in your stand. There are mornings this time a year that can freeze your toes, hands, and face. Be sure to wear enough layers that you are warm, but not too much that you are going to sweat and make yourself colder from the sweat decreasing your body heat. If you want your feet to stay warm I would recommend wearing sox’s that are not super tight on your feet and stop your blood circulation. As far as your gloves go make sure you wear gloves that still give you functionality with being able to use your trigger release on your bow, or pull the trigger on your firearm. Having the same consistency in everything you do is important when it comes to taking an

accurate shot.

In this sport every little thing matters from knowing the area you are hunting to being comfortable with the equipment you are using. Never go on a hunt unprepared, you will regret it and wish you were while you are freezing your butt off for nothing. Always plan your hunt and know what you are getting into before heading out into the woods.

So once again, this is Ryan Tacovsky with Causeway Ford, saying get out there and enjoy the outdoors, but do it safely and follow the Now to relate to more of what this article guidelines and rules. If you are prepared and safe is about I will stick to the deer hunting. The this sport can be very fun and rewarding, and winter time gets very cold and brutal, you can something you can pass down to your friends be out there for 4, 5, 6 hours without seeing a and family to enjoy as well. Happy hunting , and single critter or deer. Deer tend to be a little less stop in and see me at Causeway Ford for your active in the winter just like humans. It is cold next car or truck purchase I would love to help and nasty and, well who likes to do much of out any one I can. Thank you and have a great anything except eat and be lazy this time a year. Directions On a large baking sheet with sides, add half the lemon slices to half of the sheet and arrange the chicken skin-side up over them. Drizzle with olive oil and season generously with salt and pepper. Hit the chicken with a few dashes of paprika, then move on to the other half of the sheet. Add the potatoes and carrots cut-side down to the empty half of the sheet. Top everything with the thyme and rosemary, then drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Over the portion of the baking sheet with the chicken, add the remaining lemon slices and season again with salt, pepper and paprika. Roast until the chicken is cooked through, about 40 minutes. Discard the rosemary, thyme and lemon slices. Remove the chicken from the sheet and cover gently with aluminum foil (no need to crimp the edges, just lay it over it until ready to serve).

MARK YOUR CALENDARS

Mark your calendars for November 28th!! As you and your family recover from this year’s Thanksgiving feast, consider coming out to support the Our Gang Players, Southern Ocean County’s oldest and largest community theater group. With family and friends visiting for the weekend, why not get out and see something different?

Since 1977, Sherry Schnepp and the Our Gang Players have been providing children and adults with the opportunity to participate in full-scale musical productions, regardless of talent or ability. Starting with a handful of young people performing on a makeshift stage in the Barnegat Light Firehouse, the group has since grown to include different divisions for children and adults. Unfortunately, Our Gang has been unable to find a permanent home. Performing at various venues between Long Beach Island and the Mainland, the group has become rather nomadic in recent years. With soaring rental prices on storage facilities and performance venues, Our Gang has been forced to become rather creative in its fundraising efforts. In an attempt to aid the group, former members Kelly Gallimore, Drew Stevens, and Linda Reynolds have formed the Our Gang Players Alumni Association (OGPAA), a group of former participants trying to preserve Our Gang Players so that future generations may benefit. Pairing with current member Jennifer Baker and celebrated stage director Kevin Bott, the OGPAA is excited to present a one-night only show with all proceeds going to benefit the Our Gang Players and their quest to find a longstanding home. You will see members from as far back as the 1990’s. Faces you remember, songs that sound familiar and the Our Gang Love that is always evident in every show. “The Our Gang Alumni Reunion Show” will be performed at Barnegat High School Bengal Theater. Former members of the group will be coming together on Saturday, November 28th at 7pm to celebrate the rich history of theater that Our Gang Players has provided to Southern Ocean County. The evening will involve performances from past members of all ages with complimentary refreshments served at intermission. Don’t miss your chance to see almost four decades worth of talent on one stage! Reserve your tickets now by calling 609-597-0553. Save money by buying your tickets online for $20 each at ourgang.org or purchase at the door the night of the show for $25 per person. Each ticket includes free drink and deserts during intermission. Lets not only support community theater but the longest running non-profit community theater in Ocean County!!

how to:

Carve a Pumpkin

1. Choose a large pumpkin and use a sharp serrated knife to cut off the crown. 2. Using a large serving spoon, scoop out the seeds and fibres and discard. Then remove some of the flesh. 3. With a marker pen, draw a simple outline of a face on the pumpkin. Use a small serrated knife to cut out the eyes, nose and mouth. Always cut away from you in case the knife slips. 4. Pop a tea light inside the pumpkin, light it and replace the crown.

Ask The Expert! 609.597.8083 8 Things Every woman Should

ADVERTISE Know About Their Breast Health

HERE!

Want to reach 20,000 manahawkin and barnegat residences each month?? Rates as low as $100!

The thought of having breast cancer is frightening. But, ignoring the possibility that you may develop breast cancer or avoiding the processes to detect cancer, can be dangerous. According to Denise Johnson Miller, M.D., FACS, medical director of breast surgery for Meridian Health, “Early detection, a skilled team and a positive attitude provides the greatest possibility of successful treatment.” Dr. Johnson Miller clarifies some of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to breast health. 1. If cancer doesn’t run in my family, then I don’t have to worry. The fact is that all women are at risk for breast cancer. Women without a family history of breast cancer, average women, have a 12.4% chance of developing breast cancer by age 80. Self-breast exams are important for all women, and you should get a baseline mammogram at age 35, and then annually at age 40. If there is family history of premenopausal breast cancer (in close relatives on either side of the family), then start your baseline 10 years before their age of diagnosis. Comparison of the images from year to year is essential for your doctor to detect changes over time. 2. I should only rely on my doctor’s visit for my breast health. If you notice any changes in your breast or feel an abnormality, always see your physician. Any nipple discharge (especially bloody or clear) should be checked out right away. Discomfort or pain in the breast should also be investigated. 3. All mammograms hurt. Yes, having a mammogram is uncomfortable, but it varies with your tolerance for pain. Pressure is necessary to get a good image, and the flatter the better. For instance, think of a ball of clay with a seed under it. If you roll it out thin, the seed will eventually be visible as a bump. If you are still having menstrual periods, try to schedule your mammogram five to seven days after your menstrual cycle ends, usually when your breasts are less sensitive. 4. Mammography is the only tool to diagnose breast cancer. Mammography is the only universally accepted screening tool to detect abnormalities, but technology such as ultrasound can complement diagnosis. 3D mammography, also known as tomosynthesis, is a type of mammogram designed to look through dense breast tissue and minimize the need for unnecessary biopsies. In certain cases,

a MRI can be used to help your physician make a better diagnosis. 5. An occasional self-breast exam in the shower is sufficient. It’s important to know your body and conduct a self-breast exam monthly in order to detect changes in your breasts and potentially benign lumps, regardless of your age. Your breast should be as flat as possible to feel all tissues, so lying down, with one arm over your head is the best position for a selfexam. If any lump is detected, it should be reported to your doctor. Any additional breast changes not resolved in a short period of time should also be reported and checked by your physician. 6. All imaging centers are the same. The saying “practice makes perfect” is a good one to apply when choosing a location to have a mammogram. Your best bet is to select a facility that has a fellowship-trained breast radiologist, which means that he/she has advanced training in reading mammograms and identifying potential problems. Also, comprehensive breast centers usually offer all of the testing needed to evaluate an abnormality, including ultrasound, MRI, and image-guided needle biopsy when necessary. 7. All breast lumps are cancerous. First, don’t jump to conclusions. Many lumps are not cancer, but instead cysts, benign nodules, or dense breast tissue. Second, don’t delay seeing your doctor to determine what is going on. A mammogram and ultrasound can help identify a mass or calcifications and determine the need for further investigation. 8. If I am diagnosed with cancer, I will lose my breast. This is usually not the case. A lumpectomy (removal of the lump) followed by radiation is often an option. In some cases, even large lumps can be reduced in size prior to surgery to allow for breast conservation. Promptly explore all your options and make an educated decision with your physician. “A mammogram, including 3D mammograms, are great tools in the fight against breast cancer,” says Dr. Johnson Miller. “The technology is tremendous and can detect breast cancer before lumps can be felt or symptoms appear. Early detection of breast cancer not only helps provide a woman with more options, but also increases her chances of having the best possible outcome.” For more information about Meridian Cancer Care or to find a doctor, visit MeridianHealth.com.
