SUMMER OF ’69 CAUSEWAY FORD CELEBRATES 49 YEARS By Joe Stroffolino, Editor

Manahawkin-It was the Summer of ‘69”, to be precise it was June 20, 1969 when Dave Wintrode purchased and opened Causeway Ford. Of course that is just the beginning of a decades long story. We need to travel back to Michigan. Dave Wintrode was just out of college. He had what he thought was his dream job. He was working for the Ford Motor Company in Detroit. “But then they transferred me to New Jersey, which I initiated because I wanted to work in the Newark regional offices located in Teterboro,” said Wintrode. After a short time, though, he discovered that he wanted to move to a place where he could obtain a stronger sense of community in order to raise his family.

Dave Wintrode circa late 70s

“I also realized that the corporate life was not for me and I wanted to run a local dealership” said Wintrode. There was a small Ford dealer that he called on as part of his Ford Motor Company job. It was in a small southern Ocean County town named Manahawkin, just west of Long Beach Island. Dave Wintrode recognized an opportunity in this undiscovered gem of a location. Wintrode purchased Conti Causeway Ford in the Summer of 1969 from the Conti family. The dealership was located on East Bay Avenue across from the current

Manahawkin post office. Nine years later, he moved the business to its current location on Route 72. So much has changed since the move to Route 72. First the area need more brand choices, so when the Lincoln–Mercury franchise became available Wintrode purchased them. Then he added Honda, Nissan and the latest acquired brand Hyundai. Whatever brand was added, the focus never changed. Making our customers happy and making sure they come back. It has been 49 years since the purchase of a Ford dealer in a small remote summer resort location. Dave Wintrode wanted a “Stronger sense of Community” to raise his family in. He led by example, getting and staying involved in community growth and philanthropy. To this day, no other local business leader has given more time, money and resources to the southern Ocean County community. That decision to follow his instincts changed the lives of his family and thousands of others. Next year will mark the 50th Anniversary of the “The Summer of 69’”. It will be a year filled with monthly celebrations and opportunities to give even more back to Ocean County. Stay tuned…

SOUTHERN OCEAN MEDICAL CENTER PARTNERS WITH LOCAL SCHOOL TO DRAMATICALLY EDUCATE AND INFORM STUDENTS OF THE DANGERS OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROJECT AWARE IS A ONE-OF-A-KIND EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOCUSED ON INFORMING SIXTH GRADERS ABOUT THE DANGERS OF DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE. Drug and alcohol abuse is a serious concern in our communities. The opioid problem is now at alarming numbers: Every day 91 people die from an overdose in this country. Ocean and Monmouth counties are among the hardest hit for substance abuse in the state. Join Hackensack Meridian Health Southern Ocean Medical Center and Stafford Township Intermediate School for a dramatic real-life scenario that uniquely connects with students as they learn the consequences of making bad choices. The one-of-a kind theatrical program begins at the Stafford Theater Arts Center in Manahawkin; continues at the Emergency Department; and concludes with a debriefing session in the Beach Plum Conference Room at Southern Ocean Medical Center. A check presentation by the Maximillian Foundation to help fund Project Aware will also take place in the Emergency Department. For security purposes, planning and parking instructions, members of the media interested in covering this event should contact Anne Green of the Hackensack Meridian Health Southern Ocean Medical Center Communications and Public Relations Department, in advance to confirm attendance at 609-978-3017 (office), 570-690-1941 (cell) or Anne.Green@hackensackmeridian.org About Project Aware Hackensack Meridian Health Southern Ocean Medical Center and Stafford Intermediate School partner along with the police department L.E.A.D officers (formerly D.A.R.E) and local anti-abuse leaders to present Project

During the week of April 23, students of the Stafford Intermediate School’s Drama Enrichment program will present a unique and one-of-a-kind experience that has influenced the lives of thousands of students in our community. For over 19 years, nearly 500 students experience this dramatic presentation that helps them make the “right” choice and aims to reduce the incidences of overdose and deaths in Ocean County. Project Aware has expanded to Pinelands Junior High School in Little Egg Harbor with performances on May 21 and 22. The goal of Hackensack Meridian Health is to further expand the program in Ocean and Monmouth counties.

ANNUAL EVENT BENEFITING THE SOUTHERN REGIONAL EDUCATION FOUNDATION IS BACK FOR THE 9TH YEAR

It is that time again for Causeway’s 9th Annual Drive 4UR School benefiting the Southern Regional Education Foundation. In the past we have raised money for Digital Whiteboards in the classroom, the Southern Regional mobile news van, Anti-Bullying advocates, and much more. We couldn’t have done this without the help of our amazing community! Causeway has been here even before there was a Rt. 72 and we are currently in our 49th year! Most of our employees go to the same restaurants, stores, and our kids go to school with your kids. We are proud to call Manahawkin our home. Since this is our 9th year doing this fundraiser with Southern Regional High School & with the help of our good friend Craig Henry, we have had a great turnout every year… and it keeps going up and up! The only thing you have to do is test drive a vehicle (that we bring) and fill out a paper survey (that we supply too). For every person that drives something and fills out a complete survey on that vehicle, Ford will donate $20 towards the Southern Regional Education Foundation. I have personally managed each event trying to figure out which vehicles to bring and having enough personnel to keep the line moving. We always have such a great turnout that I always have to call in some support to bring more cars. This year is going to be no different! There will probably be around 8-9 cars, with the emphasis being SUV’s and Pickups. I remember one year I brought an F-350 Diesel Dually and it was the talk of the event. You could have had a Ferrari pull in and people would still be looking at this truck. There is no definitve list on what is coming, but expect at least 2 F-150’s, 1 SuperDuty, a mustang, and a good mix of new model SUV’s and crossovers. There will be the really cute Ford EcoSport (if we still have them in stock then) which is a compact Crossover (about the size of a Fiesta) which is perfect for the person just learning to drive. Thanks again for all the support over the years and lets have fun and drive cars for money that benefits the High School. This event is rain or shine (barring any really bad weather). We are looking forward to see you there!

What’s TE Mike Gesicki’s outlook with the Miami Dolphins? We asked an expert who knows best

SPRING 2018

SPORTS BEAT Field Hockey

Congratulations Southern Regional Field Hockey Alum Madison Skeie on being named captain in the fall 2018 season, for Providence College Field Hockey. #RamPride

By Josh Moyer Mike Gesicki is the newest member of the Miami Dolphins — so we decided to turn toward a Dolphins expert to see what might lie ahead for the second-round pick early on his NFL career. Will he start from Day 1? And why did Miami pick him No. 42 overall, over the likes of some other elite tight ends? We asked Miami Herald beat writer Adam Beasley for his thoughts: Q: Let’s start off with a simple, but big, question: The Dolphins have yet to re-sign Anthony Fasano and just signed veteran Gavin Escobar. So is it safe to say Gesicki will start on Day 1 this season? A: It’d be a shocker if he doesn’t because, like you mentioned, they don’t have a ton else there. They bring back MarQueis Gray, who did a lot more two years ago than he did last year. And they keep talking up AJ Derby. But, no, the Dolphins usually expect their second-round picks to come and contribute right away. And Mike Gesicki will be no different. Q: What kind of role do you see for him in this offense? A: Well, it depends on how quickly he learns to block. I mean, both he and Chris Grier, the general manager, mentioned that as a weakness. So, if he can’t block, he won’t be a three-down player. But it’s up to him how much he plays. Certainly, Adam Gase has not had a tight end of his skill-set in his youth in his three years here, so they’re going to find a way to use him. But if they can’t count on him to pass-protect or run-block, he’s going to be a spot player.

player type — I know Gesicki played volleyball too — is Jimmy Graham. A lot of them don’t pan out because they can’t make the transition. Now, the Dolphins have a lot of faith that he can. It’s not like this guy is a third-day pick. He’s the 42nd pick of the draft. So they see something, obviously, in him that translates into the NFL. And certainly, look, his measurables are off the charts. He came on the last two years and really just has one deficiency. I will say this: The Dolphins passed on Dallas Goedert, the South Dakota State tight end who came on a visit as well. And they picked Gesicki over Goedert. Now that could be something we harp on for years to come, if one outplays the other. It’ll either look like a really good decision by the Dolphins or a really bad one. Q: You mentioned Goedert, and that brings me to my last question. You know this Dolphins’ front office, so what was it about Gesicki that made Miami pull the trigger at No. 42, taking him over the likes of Goedert?

Q: I think that’s kind of the concern. In 2012, the Dolphins took a freakishly athletic tight end in Michael Egnew — but he couldn’t block and they wouldn’t play him until it improved. It never did. Is there a chance that happens with Gesicki?

A: Athleticism and certainly he did very well with his visit down here. They’ve tracked him for months now and kind of had a final interview with them down in Davie a few weeks back. And that was the clincher. He felt very comfortable here, and they felt very comfortable with him.

A: Sure. I mean, it’s a different coaching staff from six years ago. But, yeah, I don’t think it’s unique to Michael Egnew. Not every tight end who’s an athletic basketball

You know, second-round picks are about a 50 percent hit rate. The Dolphins have been below that average; maybe Mike Gesicki’s the one to turn that around.

THE HISTORY OF MEMORIAL DAY

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2018 occurs on Monday, May 28. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season. Early Observances of Memorial Day The Civil War, which ended in the spring of 1865, claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history and required the establishment of the country’s first national cemeteries. By the late 1860s, Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers. Did You Know? Each year on Memorial Day a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time. It is unclear where exactly this tradition originated; numerous different communities may have independently initiated the memorial gatherings. Nevertheless, in 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day.

Waterloo—which first celebrated the day on May 5, 1866—was chosen because it hosted an annual, community-wide event, during which businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags. Decoration Day On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance later that month. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the

land,” he proclaimed.

The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle. On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried there. Many Northern states held similar commemorative events and reprised the tradition in subsequent years; by 1890 each one had made Decoration Day an official state holiday. Southern states, on the other hand, continued to honor their dead on separate days until after World War I. History of Memorial Day Memorial Day, as Decoration Day gradually came to be known, originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during World War I the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars. For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30, the date Logan had selected for the first Decoration Day. But in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees; the change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday. Memorial Day 2017 occurs on May 29; Memorial Day 2018 falls on May 28. Memorial Day Traditions Cities and towns across the United States host Memorial Day parades each year, often incorporating military personnel and members of veterans’ organizations. Some of the largest parades take place in Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C. Americans also observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and memorials. On a less somber note, many people take weekend trips or throw parties and barbecues on the holiday, perhaps because it unofficially marks the beginning of summer. www.history.com

THE 10 BEST GIFTS FOR COLLEGE GRADUATES OF 2018

SPORTS BEAT Continued from page 3

Physical Education

Every May, college seniors prepare to say goodbye to school and hello to adulthood. Even if grads have something planned, their life for the first time is a blank slate. It can be exciting, sad, happy, scary, and bittersweet.

Congratulations Southern Regional Physical Education Department on placing 2nd in the Women’s Division of New Jersey Physical Fitness Program sponsored by @marines #USMC on Saturday, March 24, 2018. The team was lead by Physical Education/Health teacher Ms. Jenna Lombardo. Congratulations to our students & Assistant Principal/ Supervisor of Physical Education Mr. Joe DiPietro. #RamPride

If you know someone graduating in the class of 2018, help them adjust to the real world with a gift they’ll actually use. Of course, you can always give grads money, but one of these gifts would make a thoughtful addition to a check or a great replacement to a wad of cash all together. Whether you give a grad a book to help them with their finances, clothes to help them build their professional wardrobe, or a laptop to help them leave their used college devices behind, all will be appreciated. Here are 10 gift ideas for the new college graduate in your life. 1. The Amazon Echo Recent grads are likely to become someone else’s assistant, so give them the gift of their own (digital) assistant. They can ask Alexa, the voice inside the device, anything from what the weather forecast is to how old Ariana Grande is. Bonus: it plays music when asked. But that’s not all the smart device does. Read our list of EVERYTHING that works with Echo and Alexa to see what else it’s capable of. 2. A nice watch

Congratulations Southern Regional Boys Golf senior, Caleb Rossi on his commitment to St. Peter’s University to continue his education and compete on their Men’s Golf team. He is pictured with his parents and Southern Boys Gokf Head Coach Jeff Reilly. #RamPride

Watches for some reason symbolize adulthood. This might be because time isn’t really a thing until you graduate from college and life starts going by really quickly and you realize you need to make the most of every second. That’s why you should get your grad a watch, to remind them of this sad-but-true fact of life. Shinola watches are popular right now, but there are more affordable picks out there. For men, Nixon is a great, affordable alternative. And for women, Olivia Burton and Movado are two great options. 3. A new laptop After four years of school, a laptop has gone through a lot. With the amount of wear and tear put on a computer during college, it might be time for a new computer when you graduate. Help your grad out with a new laptop. This popular ASUS is half the price of a Macbook, and we recommend it. 4. Upgraded drinking glassware Once you graduate from college, you have to say goodbye to the red solo cup. Okay, I’m half kidding. I grew up with three brothers and my mom definitely bought the 250-pack of red solo cups regularly so she wouldn’t have to do dishes more often than 24-7. But when it comes to drinking alcohol in the real world, you need to class it up. The whiskey drinker would love this sophisticated, monogrammed decanter. It says ‘yes, I’m adult now, but I also still like to have fun,’ which is really just the motto for recent grads.

Whether you have your own business cards or you’re collecting business cards from others (or both!), you need somewhere to store them. That’s where a business card holder comes in handy. There are lots of cheap options out there, but this cute Kate Spade holder is perfect for the trendy grad ready to take on the working world. 8. A coffee maker Coffee is essential to getting through the work day, but it can get pretty expensive going to Starbucks every day (believe me, you don’t want to know how much money I’ve spent at coffee shops in the last month never mind the last seven years since I graduated). If you want to get them more than just a Keurig, give your grad the gift of an espresso machine. With the Nespresso, they can pretend they’re still studying abroad while drinking the finest and strongest of coffee. 9. Camera (that’s not a smartphone) If your grad is looking for a “serious” camera to capture their new adult life, look no further than the Nikon D5500. This is the perfect gift for creative people who might feel trapped in their new cubicles. They can use the camera to upgrade their Instagram page or maybe even to start a career as a photographer. Who knows! 10. A gym membership Most college students can go to the gym for free. In other words, it’s included in tuition. But when you stop paying for college, there’s no longer a gym to go to or fitness classes to attend for free – and that stuff gets expensive. If you’re not sure what they want to do and where they want to do it, try getting your grad a ClassPass membership. With ClassPass, members can take up to 10 classes per month at different fitness studios in their area. Check the ClassPass website to see if it’s available where your grad lives.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY AND NISSAN CELEBRATE CULMINATION OF 2018 HOME IS THE KEY CAMPAIGN BY DEDICATING NEW HOMES IN NASHVILLE

Habitat campaign continuing to fundraise throughout April and raise awareness of the growing need for affordable housing across the U.S. NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Habitat for Humanity and Nissan are celebrating the closing of the second annual Home is the Key campaign with a special key dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting with two families in Nashville. “Americans clearly recognize the strong and growing need for affordable housing,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. “That recognition is important, but we can’t stop there. Through the Home is the Key campaign, we’re delivering tangible ways people can take action to support more affordable housing in their own communities. We can’t thank Nissan and their customers enough for their support of affordable housing in the United States.” Featured on the TODAY Show, Home is the Key brought together sponsors, celebrities and community leaders to build homes, raise funds, and speak out about the need for affordable housing. “Nissan and Habitat have partnered together for more than a decade, helping families all over the world build strength and stability by building their own homes. We are proud to be a part of the Home is the Key campaign,” said Jeremy Tucker, vice

president, Marketing Communications and Media, Nissan North America. “Studies have shown that a stable home plays a key role in positively influencing a family’s education, health and financial opportunities. For this reason, Nissan invites our customers to help unlock a family’s future by joining us during the April campaign.” Over the last 40 years, Habitat for Humanity has helped more than 13 million people obtain a safe, decent and affordable home in the U.S. and around the world. But a significant challenge to home ownership remains. According to a survey of more than 1,000 Americans conducted by Habitat, one in four of those surveyed said the cost of housing will prevent them from continuing to live in their current neighborhoods. Approximately 30% said they had to compromise on either the neighborhood they want to live in or the size or type of home they want to purchase to be able to afford a home that meets their families’ needs. The survey also found that 84% of Americans believe there is an extreme shortage of affordable housing in the country and that the issue is critical for the government to address.

There is still time to support the campaign by donating directly at habitat.org or by sharing support using #HomeIsTheKey on social media. Throughout April 2018, for every #HomeIsTheKey social post, Nissan will donate $1 to Habitat, up to $250,000.

how a decent, affordable home creates a better life for families and individuals. The campaign recently won two PR News CSR & Nonprofit Awards and was named as a finalist for Engage for Good’s Halo Awards and Ragan’s PR Daily Awards.

Lincoln today introduces the 2018 Navigator, an allnew full-size SUV that combines modern luxury with advanced technology – elevating family travel to first class. Wireless charging and standard Wi-Fi keep everyone connected. Advanced technology allows the driver to effortlessly adjust the vehicle to make driving easier or more enjoyable – in any weather or terrain. With more space for your belongings than any other large SUV*, the all-new Navigator assures almost nothing is left behind. Modern Elegance Navigator’s elegance is on display before the doors even open. Upon approach, the chrome Lincoln star logo on the grille softly illuminates**. Then, LED lighting in the lower front body and taillamps subtly engages, and a luminous Lincoln welcome mat appears beneath the front doors. At night, interior ambient lights sequentially illuminate each of the SUV’s three rows. During the day, a panoramic roof fills the cabin with natural light. A twin-turbo V6 engine projected to produce 450 horsepower provides smooth power whenever you need it, delivered through a 10-speed transmission. Navigator’s lighter, high-strength aluminum-alloy body removes nearly 200 pounds, helping create a more refined ride. Additional weight savings have been reinvested in features such as towing capability and quietness. For example, laminated front and side glass contributes to the quietest Navigator cabin ever. The all-new Navigator offers speed-dependent adaptive lighting, a new Lincoln technology that provides a wider spread of light at lower speeds for increased visibility – helpful when driving through residential areas. As the vehicle accelerates, the beam of light narrows to help eliminate the glare off signs or other distractions.

Honda Celebrates the Thrill of Driving Manual with Millennial-Focused ‘Shifting Gears’ Experience in Los Angeles LOS ANGELES – Yesterday Honda hosted more than 53 media and social influencers at its “Shifting Gears” celebration of the manual transmission in the San Gabriel mountains. The program was designed to showcase Honda’s 16 vehicles offered with manual transmissions as well as to teach drivers how to operate a manual transmission for the first time. Participants had the chance to experience everything from the cheerful Honda Fit Sport to the high-performance Civic Type R from the modern lineup, as well as a variety of vintage Honda models, including the Honda Civic CVCC, Prelude SH, S2000 CR and more, sharing their experiences on social media using the hashtag #DriveManual. “There’s something special, something intimate and pure about being in complete control of your car,” said Sage Marie, Assistant Vice President of Honda communications. “In a fast-coming world of autonomy, we mustn’t forget some of the simple joys that have been part of driving since the very beginning.” Honda continues to offer manual transmissions in multiple trims of its entire gasolinepowered passenger car lineup, including the Honda Fit LX, Sport and EX, the Civic Sedan LX and EX-T, Civic Coupe LX and EX-T, the Civic Hatch LX and Sport, and Accord Sport 1.5T and 2.0T sedans. The Civic Type R and Civic Si Coupe and Sedan are offered exclusively with manual transmissions. The HR-V crossover is also offered with a six-speed manual in LX and EX trims. Experienced drivers were able to sample a variety of new cars on some of the most dynamic roads in southern California, while beginner and novice manual drivers were given the chance to learn in a four-activity Driving Confidence program, before graduating to the open road. “The Shifting Gears event was a great opportunity for manual transmission drivers of all experience levels to enjoy the increased control of driving stick,” said Kristen Lanzavecchia, a participant in the program. “As a newer MT driver, the Honda team’s behind the wheel training boosted my confidence to make driving manuals fun instead of daunting!” As Honda continues to push forward with some of the industry’s most advanced safety features through deployment of its Honda Sensing® suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies, the personality of its affordable, fun-to-drive cars remains intact. It’s a part of the DNA and original promise from the founder of the company, Soichiro Honda, who said, “The value of life can be measured by the number of times your soul has been deeply stirred.” For the engineers at Honda, continuing to develop vehicles that enthusiasts can be proud to own is part of the brand mission.

MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL OCEAN COUNTY STYLE

The Lakewood BlueClaws Ocean County’s team The Lakewood BlueClaws are a Minor League Baseball team affiliated with the Philadelphia Phillies that play in the Class A South Atlantic League. They are based in Lakewood Township, New Jersey, and their home field is FirstEnergy Park. The BlueClaws moved to Lakewood from Fayetteville, North Carolina, where they had been known as the Fayetteville Generals and later as the Cape Fear Crocs. Their first season in Lakewood was 2001. The Phillies’ previous South Atlantic League affiliate was based in Kannapolis, North Carolina, and known as the Piedmont Boll Weevils from 1995 to 2000 (the team is now known as the Kannapolis Intimidators). Prior to that, the team was based in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Since their arrival in New Jersey, the BlueClaws have been a success at the gate. In each of their first five seasons, they averaged over 6,500 fans per game. On August 26, 2002, in a game against the Hickory Crawdads which the BlueClaws won 3–0, attendance was a South Atlantic League record 13,003. The BlueClaws have led the South Atlantic League in either average or total attendance every year, and became the fastest team in South Atlantic League history to reach the 2 and 3 million fan attendance mark. On August 24, 2009, Phillies pitcher Brett Myers threw a scoreless inning in a rehab assignment on the same day a seven-year-old from Toms River, New Jersey became the 4 millionth fan in team history. This box office success comes in the absence of great success on the field. In their first five seasons, the BlueClaws failed to qualify for the playoffs. Their overall record topped the .500 mark for the first time in 2004. All told, in their first eight seasons, the BlueClaws topped 10,000 fans at a game three times, most recently in 2010 when they retired Ryan Howard’s #29.

2018 HYUNDAI KONA NAMED ONE OF WARDS

10 BEST INTERIORS

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., April 24, 2018 – The allnew 2018 Hyundai Kona’s sleek and modern interior was acknowledged by the editors of WardsAuto today, which named it to this year’s Wards 10 Best Interiors list. “The Kona smashes the notion that a small-vehicle interior will be bland or have low-quality materials,” said Christie Schweinsberg, senior editor, WardsAuto. “Thanks to its matte black plastics, great head-up display, generous advanced-safety technologies and funky lime-green accents -- all for under $30,000 -- the inside of Hyundai’s new small CUV knocked our judges’ socks off.” WardsAuto editors studied the vehicles in February and March, selecting the 10 winners from a field of 40 vehicles with new or significantly refreshed interiors. Editors evaluated the vehicles’ features including ergonomics, driver information, fit-andfinish, materials, value, safety, comfort and design harmony. There was no price cap on entries. Ultimately, WardsAuto editors are looking for interiors that raise the bar not only for that particular brand but also for that vehicle’s segment. “The all-new Kona offers buyers a wide and spacious feel even with its compact dimensions and low roof line by using a strong horizontal character line,” said Andrew Moir, ‎interior design manager, ‎Hyundai Design North America. “The floating display design adds further to the occupants’ sense of interior openness and the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) controls are surrounded by soft, fluid details that contribute to a sensuous experience and enhance the comfort-focused environment.” During the selection process, editors pay close attention to fit-and-finish, checking to see if seams are straight and match up cleanly on armrests, instrument panels and throughout the interior. Editors climb in and out of back seats and third rows in larger CUVs and SUVs to check overall comfort levels, headroom and legroom. Another increasingly important category is driver information. Smartphone integrations and voice-activation systems also are rigorously tested. INTERIOR OVERVIEW Hyundai designers also maximized Kona’s interior space for luggage storage capabilities, reflecting the requirements of customers with active lifestyles. The split-folding rear seats fold flat via a dual-level loading floor that gives three inches of additional vertical space and allows easy access for a variety of recreational equipment. Technology is a strong selling point of Kona with standard features including Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™. Owners can also enjoy the convenience of Qi wireless charging for their smartphones. Kona has a number of unique and exclusive features compared with competitive vehicles. For example, Kona offers the largest Heads-Up Display (HUD) in the segment. The display is more than twice as bright as the competition and double the size, making it a lot easier to keep tabs on

speed, audio, navigation and active safety information. Kona’s Driver Attention Warning is also a segment first, adding to Kona’s level of active safety. ADVANCED INFOTAINMENT AND CONNECTIVITY Kona offers a full suite of sophisticated technologies paired with user-friendly functionality to keep passengers informed and entertained. The premium infotainment system offers various advanced connectivity features, including standard Android Auto™ and standard Apple CarPlay™, SiriusXM® Radio, HD Radio and nextgeneration Blue Link® LTE-powered connectivity. The standard seven-inch color LCD display includes AM/FM/MP3 touchscreen audio, auxiliary input jacks, voice-command recognition and Rear View Monitor. The available eight-inch touchscreen navigation display includes nextgeneration Blue Link, traffic flow and incident data via HD radio, Infinity® premium audio with eight speakers, subwoofer and Clari-Fi ™ music-restoration technology. Kona offers features that they would be accustomed to in larger CUV segments, such as a large color LCD electroluminescent gauge cluster, power driver’s seat, heated leather seats, automatic air conditioning and proximity key. ACTIVE SAFETY Kona offers advanced active safety features, including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), which uses the car’s front-facing camera and radar to help detect an imminent collision and to help avoid impact or minimize damage by braking autonomously. Three additional systems also utilize the front-view camera to boost safety and convenience: Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), High Beam Assist (HBA), and Driver Attention Warning (DAW). Kona radar systems also assist with the Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW) to help detect approaching vehicles that may be obscured from view during highway driving. The Rear Cross-Traffic Collison Warning (RCCW) helps detect when another vehicle may have entered the car’s rearward path, such as backing out of a parking spot, by providing a driver alert. NEXT-GENERATION BLUE LINK® CONNECTED CAR SYSTEM Kona Ultimate models are equipped with Blue Link®, including complimentary three-year Blue Link services, with enhanced safety, diagnostic, remote and guidance services. Blue Link brings connectivity directly into the car with technologies like Google Home®, Remote Start with Climate Control, Destination Search powered by Google®, Remote Door Lock/Unlock, Car Finder, Enhanced Roadside Assistance, and Stolen Vehicle Recovery. Blue Link features can be accessed via buttons on the rearview mirror, the MyHyundai.com web portal, the Blue Link smartphone app, Amazon® Alexa Blue Link skill and by using the Blue Link Google Assistant app. Some features can also be controlled via Android Wear™ and Apple Watch™ smartwatch apps.
