IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY

On August 25th, runners will line up at Gille Park in Lacey Township for the 18th Annual Lacey 5k. Heather Scanlon, Coordinator for the Lacey Township Municipal Alliance has organized the race since its inception, which has gradually become a fixture of summer racing in Ocean County.

In 2001, to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Lacey’s founding, all township organizations were invited to create a celebratory event. The Municipal Alliance’s mission is to promote substance abuse awareness and provide education to families about the risks of drug and alcohol use, especially for teenagers. The Alliance decided a summer road race was a great way to encourage a healthy lifestyle. Originally conceived as a 5 mile race, runners started at Lacey Township High School and meandered through various neighborhoods in town, and crossed the finish line back at the high school. To draw even more runners, the Alliance shortened the race to the widely popular 5k distance in 2004. Moving the race to Gille Park also made for a safer course, as runners wouldn’t have to cross over any busy roads. Since then, the number of registrants for the Lacey 5k increases every year, finally eclipsing the 400 mark in 2017. I can still remember those early Saturday mornings when I was forcibly volunteered to help with the race in some way. Whether it was being a course martial or putting out signs, my mother didn’t care how late I was out the previous night; I was helping. Bleary-eyed, begrudgingly, and oftentimes hiding a hangover, I obliged. Over the years I watched and learned the behind-thescenes process of organizing a local 5k. There’s a lot more to it than simply drawing a chalk finish line on the pavement. You have to pick a location that has parking, bathrooms, room for possibly a couple-hundred people to gather. Ideally it’s near enough road that you can make a 3.1 mile course that is safe and runner-friendly. You might even need permission from the local government or police to help direct traffic. And don’t forget you’ll probably want a timing company to run the clock and record official results. Those are

just the logistics of the race itself. We haven’t even discussed creating race logos, flyers, getting t-shirts printed, seeking sponsorships and donations, doing awards, not to mention requisitioning as many volunteers as possible, and then managing them. It’s a lot of work and a lot of stress. I watched my mom go through this cycle every summer for seventeen summers. It gets a little easier every year, and despite the work and stress leading up to it, I also see the

distribute more than 12 million meals to 132,000 people including 40,000 children in Monmouth and Ocean Counties, and partner with more than 300 feeding programs from food pantries to soup kitchens, senior centers and group homes – and 95 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to those in need. Fulfill has a 4 Star Charity rating, the highest ranking on Charity Navigator. They also provide many other programs designed to

positive effect the finished product has on everyone who participates. The community is a better place for it, even if it’s just for an hour on a hot August morning.

promote healthier lifestyles and provide education about the importance of nutrition like kids’ feeding programs, culinary training, and affordable healthcare.

So when the idea was brought up for Causeway to arrange a race, I volunteered to organize it; less begrudgingly this time. On October 21st, the Causeway Family of Dealerships will be hosting the Causeway Super Family 5k, with proceeds to benefit the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, now known as Fulfill. This organization changes lives. They

The 5k will start and finish at the Stafford Township Administration Center on Bay Ave at 9am. Course details, as well as information on how to register, volunteer, and become a sponsor will be available in next month’s gazette. Be sure to check out our Facebook page for updates in the meantime.

6 REASONS TO RUN A 5K By Jeff Galloway - Runner’s World

5K’s are one of the most popular races out there, and here are six reasons why: 1. EASE. Most of you are busy, and training time is precious. Therefore, it’s really tough to find the time to train for a half-marathon or marathon. Not so with the 5K. You can work up to it quickly (from scratch) and train for it adequately on just three 2. CONVENIENCE. With a 5K, race day is a snap. You arrive at the race, warm up for 10 to 20 minutes, race for 40 minutes maximum, cool down, replenish with food and drink, and head home in your new race T-shirt before your family has finished breakfast. 3. EXHILARATION. In a 5K, you feel like you’re really racing. And that’s a good feeling. Not many runners can maintain a 10K race pace that is much faster than their daily training pace. With a

5K, however, you can motor as much as one minute per mile faster than your usual training pace. 4. IMPROVEMENT. Racing the occasional 5K is an excellent fitness booster. It will elevate your max VO2, improve form and efficiency, and make your regular training runs feel easier. 5. CHANGE. Too often in our training, we run the same course at the same pace at the same time of day. Don’t get me wrong. Routine is good— essential, in fact, if you want to stay with a long-term running program. But too much of a good thing is too much of a good thing. You need variation, and a short-and-sweet 5K every once in awhile is a great way to mix things up. 6. MOTIVATION. Races are great motivators. Each year, scores of runners tell me that having a regular schedule of 5K races gets them out the door on days when they would have stayed in bed in the morning or hit the couch after work.

FULFILL PROVIDES SUMMER MEALS FOR CHILDREN WHEN SCHOOL IS OUT

Place the potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water and season with salt. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to medium and simmer until tender, about 20 minutes. Drain well, then cool slightly. Return the potatoes to the pot and, using a masher, mash the potatoes. Meanwhile, melt the butter in medium, heavy skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and saute until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and corn and saute about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Add the cream and cook over medium-low heat for 3 minutes longer. Add the sauteed corn to the mashed potatoes and stir to combine until the liquid is fully absorbed. Season with salt and pepper. Serve immediately.

Since June, Fulfill has participated in the 2018 Summer Food Service Program, which provides free breakfasts and lunches to low-income children attending summer recreational programs.

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 2/3 cup butter, softened 1 2/3 cups sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 eggs 1/2 cup sour cream 1/2 cup milk

The twenty one programs sponsored by Fulfill are located within Monmouth and Ocean Counties in places where children ages eighteen and younger can receive a meal in a safe, organized environment. Participating sites can include summer camp programs at schools, churches and community centers where children are enrolled. In addition, there are also open sites where any child can go to receive a meal, regardless of enrollment. Free breakfasts and lunches are distributed to the sites every day, where the participating children will receive meals. Last summer, there were 59,000 meals distributed to well-deserving kids. Wendi Silver, Fulfill’s Network Engagement Team Manager notes, “It’s such an important program because it really helps fill the gap between the school year and when children are used to getting their meals during the day.” This summer, Fulfill prepares to help provide meals to over one thousand children in our community. These programs are critical for many of these kids, as they would otherwise be struggling with hunger throughout the summer months. OUR NEIGHBORS,

THE OSPREYS WRITTEN BY & PHOTOS BY JIM VERHAGEN

Well, it’s the same for our Osprey, and perhaps even more so since the fate of their entire species depends on the quality of the summer rentals they manage to secure on LBI each year!

in the Bay is indicating that we need to do more to keep trash out of our local marine environment. Even folks who aren’t particu- larly interested in, or even outright dislike our local Osprey, can understand what an important part Island life they are, even if only for this reason. In the decades since DDT all but eliminated Barnegat Bay’s Osprey, small groups of dedicated people have worked tirelessly to restore the population. Building Osprey friend- ly nesting platforms, surveying the population each year, banding the young to track their movements, and studying blood, tissue, and egg samples have all been part of the astoundingly successful effort to restore the population to a healthy level. Thanks to these efforts, we once again get to live side by side with these magnificent, local animals, and we all can watch Osprey fishing in our local surf from the comfort of our beach chairs, or watch them raise their young on channel markers and platforms around the bay, or even just give them a little space and simply ignore them. After decades of relentless development, the coast is clearly reaching its saturation point. Local wildlife like our Osprey give us a valuable nudge to leave a little open space, and some natural beauty, before we turn the entire Shore into just another New Jersey suburb.

Marching Band

So the next time you see one LBI’s amazing Osprey flying round the Is- land, remember that it is not just some random bird passing through. That Osprey is our neighbor, and just like us, it is bound to the Island by family, but history, by necessity, Southern Regional Marching Band Wins Tournament of Bands. The Southern Regional High School Marching Band won the 2017 Tournament of Bands Group 3 Atlantic Coast Championship at Hershey Park Stadium on Sunday, October 29th. The Band scored a 97.0 with their show, titled “What Lies Within” to take first place at the competition along with the awards for Best Music, Best Brass, and Best Percussion. The win finishes off an undefeated competitive season for the 82-member Marching Band, coming in first place at every event this year. Owen LaRocca received a $2,000 scholarship from Tournament of Bands at the Championships. Congratulations to all!

Osprey are a “site fidelic” species. This means that once an Osprey family finds a place it loves, it will return to that exact, same place, over and over again. People along the Jersey Shore can certainly appreciate this. We too tend to go to the exact spots we know and love best each summer. If our family took us to Margate in the summers when we were children, we will probably take our family to Margate as well. If our great grandparents were early settlers of LBI, the prob- ability is high that we’ll wind up owning a home here too; or at least renting one to continue the tradition and share those memories with the next generation. In fact, we are often so intensely site fidelic down the Shore, some of us have been coming to LBI for 50 years and have never even seen some of the other great towns of the Jersey Shore just a few dozen miles up the Parkway to the north or south. Osprey are exact- ly the same as we are in this regard. Wherever they have the best summer memories of raising their families is where they will want to return the following year. They have been clamoring for the best spots on the Island to raise their fam- ilies each summer, and returning year after year to those same places, for countless generations. Shortly after we humans arrived on the Island, we attempted to cleanup the mosquito “prob- lem” by flooding the local marshes with DDT. Thankfully for us, and quite unfortunately for our local Osprey, the fact that we were poisoning not just the mosquitoes, but the entire Bay and everything that lived there, including ourselves, became obvious when the local population of Osprey, Bald Eagles, and other top predators plummeted quickly and dramatically. To this day we value the Osprey as an “indicator species.” Since they exist on a diet of 100% local seafood, serious problems in the local marine environment show up in the health of the local Osprey early, and serve as valuable warnings to us. Currently, the increasing number of Osprey being strangled and suffocated by plastic debris

Imagine for a moment that LBI didn’t allow any private ownership of land or homes. Instead, picture our Island as a large park with a collection of humble shacks and small domiciles randomly scattered across it. Now imagine that these public homes were available, free of charge, to any and all of us for the summer on a first come, first serve basis.

To some, this crazy, fantastical scenario must sound absolutely horrifying. To others, it probably sounds like fun. But for LBI’s local Osprey families, this is precisely their reality. We all know how amazingly precious and exceedingly valuable Island real estate is to us.

Story Courtesy of Bay Magazine

Lacking even basic amenities like heat, air conditioning, or running water, our season would likely get started in mid March when the weather began to warm, and would end in October when the cold winds returned. The most aggressive and most experienced Islanders would arrive first in the early spring to claim the very best spots for the summer. Families arriving later in June would either be forced to take the last of the slim pickings: tiny, flood prone, dangerous little shacks rejected by early visitors; or to fight off weaker families for a better spot. It certainly would be chaotic at first... but as the summer got underway, we would soon be settled into our places and so would go about our business of raising our families and enjoying the many bounties the summer Shore has to offer.

and by memory. Its home here is as valuable and hard won to its family as our own homes are to us. And they have already proved to us in the past that, like any good neighbor, they’ll suffer along with us through the Island’s tragedies, and work tirelessly along with us to restore it to glory. The spirit of LBI lives in these amazing animals as it does in each of us. Their no-nonsense, hardworking determination, their devotion to fami- ly, and their love of the local environment and all of its bounty enriches, inspires, and informs us of what it truly means to love the Shore.

Be a good neighbor. Support your local Osprey!

SPORTS BEAT SPECIAL 6 Benefits of School-Based Sports Looking Back at Our Sports Champions Continued from page 3

by lnetwork | Apr 17, 2017 School-based sports programs have been known to bring out positive behaviors in its studentathletes. Through playing for their school’s team, these young athletes benefit by learning skills, habits, and attitudes that lead to their future success and preparation for life after school.

Boys Wrestling

Congratulations Southern Regional Wrestling Alum Matt Wilhelm - Cal Poly (Class of 2015) on reaching the Pac 12 Championship finals in the 184lbs weight class in his redshirt sophomore season.

Freshman Mile

Many students and even parents may not even realize the impact that playing schoolbased sports has on the studentathlete. It goes beyond playing the game they love. Here are some of the benefits of engaging in school-based sports:

Social Benefits Students who participate in sports learn how to forge close relationships with their teammates. These relationships are vital for overall well-being throughout their years in school. Students who bond because of common interests often maintain this connection long after school is over resulting in friendships that last a lifetime.

Congratulations Freshman runner Jason Braddock on placing 5th in the freshman mile run at the New Balance National Meet in New York City on Sunday, March 11, 2018.

Through sports, students also represent their communities through their schools. This strong sense of community brings student-athletes a sense of pride for representing their town’s home team and school

Time Management Skills

Boys Golf Congratulations Caleb Rossi. Southern Boys Golf, on being named #BSNSports Male Athlete of the Week. Caleb finished tied for 7th at the Palmetto Classic in Myrtle Beach and finished the spring break winning the 2018 Wildcat Invitational. Good Luck the rest of the season.

Tennis

Student-athletes learn about the importance of time-management very early in life, and it is a skill they will use long after they graduate, particularly when they are working in the real world. As a student-athlete, they learn how to juggle practices, games, tests, and homework.

Academic Benefits It has been observed that athletics have many benefits on the student’s academic performance. Sports teach them how to focus. Because sports promotes self-esteem, they value their academic standing. And the potential of someday winning a scholarship is also an excellent motivator to do well both in sports and school.

Leadership Skills Whether the student-athlete is the team captain or they play a smaller role, they develop their leadership skills by taking ownership of the part they play in the game and the team. Later, as senior athletes, they become the role models for the younger members of the team and discover what it means to lead and be a positive influence for a younger set of athletes. They discover what it is like to mentors.

Health Benefits There’s no denying the fitness levels of kids participating in sports. Because they value their health and know they need to be in peak condition to perform on the court or field, they are less likely to engage in activities that are unhealthy or risky behavior. Student-athletes are comparatively healthier than other kids. The physical activity keeps their weight under control and are more likely to make the right food choices, knowing that what they eat has an effect on their athletic performance.

The 3P’s

Congratulations Southern Regional Boys Tennis on defeating Brick Twp 5-0 on Thursday, April 26, 2018. With the win, the Rams achieved the 100th career victory in boys tennis for Coach Evan Brosniak. Coach Brosniak has also been the Head Boys Tennis Coach at Bound Brook High School. Congrats Coach! Good Luck the rest of the season. #RamPride

Student-athletes learn the 3P’s through athletics – persistence, patience and practice. They discover the value of practice to improve their skills. They realize how working hard results in performing better. They recognize how persistence and not giving up are crucial to achieving success. They develop patience by learning that success doesn’t happen overnight and that often, despite frustration and feeling overwhelmed, patience is needed to see hard times through. Ultimately, school-based sports have existed for generations for a reason. Over the years, it’s shown how kids who participated in sports at some point when they were in school were better prepared to meet the challenges of adult life. They discovered how to solve problems creatively and had a stronger sense of community. Through teamwork and the rules of the game, they learned responsibility and respect for authority.

Football

Sailing

Congratulations Southern Regional and Penn State Football Alum Mike Gesicki on being selected by the Miami Dolphins in the 2nd round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Mike is a tremendous representative of our school and community. Dreams start with the Black & Gold. #RamPride

5 NEW WORKERS IN TOWN: FORD LAUNCHES BEEKEEPING PROGRAM ADDING SIX HONEYBEE HIVES AT WORLD HEADQUARTERS Causeway Gazette

who participated in a unique competition to see who could come up with the most aesthetically pleasing and functional home for the bees.

DEARBORN, Mich., June 15, 2018 – This month Ford launches a global beekeeping program with six new honeybee hives at its Dearborn World Headquarters in support of honeybee populations, the local ecosystem, and gardening and farming communities.

Over a dozen design concepts were submitted, spanning a variety of formats and employing numerous materials ranging from wood, plant matter, acrylic, ceramics, mill foam, fiberglass and metal. In the end, the concept of Chris Westfall, a designer of vehicle interiors, was chosen for its overall benefits to colony health. Titled, “Honeycomb Sail,” the design features two sails that wrap around each beehive to provide a peaceful space away from the elements. The design takes cues from both bee wings and a thick drop of honey. One side allows for easy access by the beekeeper and the other entrance is sized just for the bees.

“Sustainability is more than improving fuel economy and reducing waste,” says Kim Pittel, Ford group vice president, sustainability, environment and safety engineering. “It’s about improving the environment we live in for all, and that includes honeybees, pollinators and the ecosystems that depend on them.” According to the nonprofit, Pollinator Partnership, honeybees are essential to the world’s food supply and are in dire need of help. The six new hives will be situated inside a walking path extension north of Ford World Headquarters. Ford employees who initiated the program will serve as beekeepers managing the hives. This effort builds on Ford’s beekeeping initiative at the historic Rouge factory in 2016.

SUMMER 2018

Adding a creative flourish to the installation, the Langstroth hives the bees reside in will be beautified by special hive shells imagined by Ford’s own designers,

Ford beekeepers will provide data on the 360,000 total honeybees expected to inhabit all six hives as the colonies grow to their full potential of 60,000 bees per hive by the height of summer to the Sentinel Apiary Program, a collective of nearly 70 beekeepers from 26 states who track honeybee health and diseases nationally.

‘SOMEWHERE, CARROLL IS SMILING;’ NEW 2019 SHELBY GT350 ADDS TECH FROM MUSTANG ROAD COURSE RACING AND ALL-NEW SHELBY GT500

DEARBORN, Mich., June 11, 2018 – To improve the new Ford Mustang Shelby® GT350 driver confidence and lap times, Ford Performance leveraged its Mustang road course racing programs and all-new upcoming Shelby® GT500, infusing GT350 with the very latest in track and street technology. “Somewhere, Carroll is smiling,” said Hermann Salenbauch, global director for Ford Performance vehicle programs. “The new Shelby GT350 is our ultimate track Mustang. We’ve stuck to Carroll Shelby’s original formula for winning championships and made our Shelby GT350 even better with the latest in raceproven aerodynamics, tire and chassis technology.” Next-level chassis aerodynamics

technology

and

Building on a road course racing and track-focused legacy born in 1965, Ford Performance engineers and designers incorporated the latest advances in tire, aerodynamics and chassis technology into the 2019 Mustang Shelby GT350. Working exclusively with Michelin, the team also engineered new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires with a Shelby GT350-specific tread pattern and different compound to deliver more grip for significantly improved acceleration and lateral acceleration, as well as braking. The 295/35 front and 305/35 rear tires are fitted to improved stiffness and optimize new 19inch aluminum wheels. An all-new rear spoiler with optional Gurney flap and optimized grille closeout was designed and tuned with experience gained from wind tunnel development of the Ford Performance Mustang road course racing cars and upcoming Shelby GT500 model. Together, they deliver significant rear greater aerodynamic efficiency when equipped with the new optional Gurney flap on the rear spoiler, which will be available after launch. Upgrades to Mustang Shelby GT350’s standard MagneRide active suspension complement the aero and tire enhancements with recalibrated springs and revised damping to take full advantage of the improvements. Stopping power is provided by sixpiston front and four-piston rear caliper Brembo™ brakes. For added control and

improved driver feedback, Shelby GT350’s electric power-assist steering and threemode electronic stability control settings feature enhancements taken from Ford Performance’s hundreds of hours of competitive track testing.

Tuning with Billy Johnson in the driver’s seat Billy Johnson knows racing. As a driver for the FIA World Endurance Ford GT and IMSA Mustang GT4 programs, Johnson has broad expertise in what makes for a great driver’s car. He worked with Ford Performance to dial in the Shelby GT350 for 2019. Shelby GT350’s exclusive high-revving 5.2-liter V8 remains the most powerful naturally aspirated Ford production engine ever and the only one of its type in the segment – delivering 526 horsepower and 429 lb.-ft. of torque at a blistering 8,250rpm redline. It’s mated to a track-proven and precise-shifting Tremec® 6-speed manual transmission. Johnson said the result of the new Mustang Shelby GT350’s aerodynamics tuning, revised brake calibration, and much greater downforce is a more balanced, higher-performing car on the straightaways and especially in the corners.

A new high-performance, customtuned 12-speaker B&O PLAY audio system by HARMAN is now available for the 2019 Mustang Shelby GT350, controlled via the now standard 8-inch SYNC® 3 touch screen that features SiriusXM and FordPass™ Connect. Dual-zone electronic automatic temperature control is now standard, along with a universal garage door opener. New colors for the 2019 Mustang Shelby GT350 include Velocity Blue and

for the first time, Ford Performance Blue. Optional factory-painted over-the-top racing stripes are available in high-gloss Shadow Black, Oxford White or Kona Blue. Mirror-mounted Shelby Cobra Projection Lamps come standard in the available Technology Package. The 2019 Mustang Shelby GT350 will be available starting in early 2019 and will be built at Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. Enrollment in an exclusive, complimentary Track Attack driving program from Ford Performance is included with each vehicle.

More craftsmanship, technology and style Inside, driver and passengers of the 2019 Mustang Shelby GT350 are treated to a comfortable, stylish and purpose-built cockpit boasting the latest in advanced technology and premium materials expected of a world-class sports car. Fresh sporting cues include a standard machined aluminum instrument panel appliqué with an available exposed carbon fiber version, plus newly designed door panel inserts in dark slate Miko® suede with accent stitching. A wrapped center console offers rich world-class craftsmanship. Standard Recaro race seats with firm side bolstering and open pass-throughs for safety harnesses offer the highest level of

NISSAN EARNS MOST WINS IN AUTOPACIFIC VEHICLE SATISFACTION AWARDS FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR WITH TOP RANKINGS IN FIVE CATEGORIES NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For the second year in a row, Nissan has scored more best-in-category wins than any other brand in the annual AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Awards (VSA), a nationwide survey of over 58,000 owners of new 2017 and 2018 cars and light trucks. Leading the pack of Nissan winners were three previous honorees – Murano, Maxima and TITAN – and two first-time award winners, LEAF and 370Z.

2018 Nissan Maxima

“Not only does Nissan have the most brand wins for the second year in a row, the Maxima and Murano have been unbeatable since their redesigns were introduced to the market,” said George Peterson, the president of AutoPacific. The Vehicle Satisfaction Awards objectively measure owner satisfaction with 40 separate attributes ranging from seating comfort and interior quality to driving performance. They provide consumers with insight into which vehicles are giving owners a satisfying ownership experience.

2018 Nissan LEAF

“The AutoPacific VSA Awards provide a unique picture of how both brands and individual models are doing in terms of satisfying customers every day,” said Brandon White, the director and chief marketing manager of Nissan North America, Inc. “It’s great to see Nissan vehicles come out on top in a wide range of categories – sedans, crossovers, full-size trucks, electric vehicles and sports cars.” About Nissan’s 2018 Vehicle Satisfaction Award Winners

2018 Nissan Murano

2018 Nissan Titan

2018 Nissan 370Z

As the halo vehicle for Nissan’s wide range of bold crossovers and SUVs, the multi-award winning Murano expresses Nissan’s advanced design direction – including its V-motion front end, LED signature boomerang lights and the unique “floating” roof. The stunning exterior design carries into the interior, which offers an engaging social lounge feel – including features such as advanced Zero Gravity front and outboard rear seating, and the airy atmosphere created by the large windows and oversized Power Panoramic Moonroof. Murano is the only vehicle in the 2018 VSA study with four consecutive category honors. Now in its eighth generation, Nissan’s flagship Maxima sedan features standard Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™, standard 300-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, performance-oriented Xtronic transmission and available sport-tuned suspension. Maxima also offers standard Intelligent Forward Collision Warning (I-FCW) and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) on all grade levels. The popular Maxima SR Midnight Edition package features sport spoiler, 19-inch gloss black aluminum-alloy wheels, Intelligent Around View Monitor (I-AVM), driver-side seat memory, Intelligent Driver Alertness (I-DA)1 and more. The TITAN half-ton is powered by Nissan’s 390-horsepower 5.6-liter Endurance® V8 engine. TITAN is available in a roomy Crew Cab, versatile King Cab and worksite-ready Single Cab body configurations – each available in 4x4 and 4x2. For 2018,

a Midnight Edition is available on TITAN Crew Cab SV and SL grade 4x4 and 4x2 models. The Midnight Edition package includes a long list of special features: black front grille with dark insert, dark headlights, black fog light finishers, black outside rearview mirrors and door handles, step rails, black exterior badging, 20-inch black painted aluminum-alloy wheels, body-color front and rear bumpers, charcoal interior trim, Midnight Edition exterior badges and available Midnight Edition floor mats. Also available is the TITAN XD. All TITAN and TITAN XD models are covered by “America’s Best Truck Warranty” – featuring bumper-to-bumper coverage of 5-years/100,000-miles, whichever comes first (see dealer for limited warranty details)3. The all-new Nissan LEAF further strengthens Nissan’s position as the global leader in zero-tailpipe emission electric vehicles. LEAF has been completely reinvented for its second generation, combining greater range with a dynamic new design and advanced technologies to create the ultimate EV package. The 2018 LEAF offers an EPA estimated range of 151 miles2, allowing drivers to enjoy longer journeys than the previous-generation vehicle. The new e-powertrain is rated at 147 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque, providing improved acceleration and driver enjoyment. Headlining the new Nissan LEAF’s Intelligent Driving technologies are ProPILOT Assist and e-Pedal. ProPILOT Assist is a single-lane “hands-on” highway driving assistance technology. The instantly recognizable 370Z exterior features LED running lights and boomerang-style taillights – matched with an innovative driver-centric three-layer interior design that groups items by how a driver sees information, operates the controls and is held in place. All 370Z Coupe models are offered with a standard 332-horsepower 3.7-liter DOHC V6 engine and choice of 6-speed manual transmission with an available SynchroRev Match® synchronized downshift rev matching system with motorsports-inspired EXEDY® high-performance clutch, or a 7-speed automatic transmission with available paddle shifters. Also available are the 370Z Roadster and motorsports-inspired 370Z NISMO. Nissan brand ties for most awards in J.D. Power 2018 Initial Quality Study (IQS) NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nissan topped three vehicle segments and finished in the top three in two others in the 2018 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS). J.D. Power IQS is the industry benchmark for new vehicle quality. This year, the Nissan brand improved by eight problems per hundred vehicles (PP100) to an overall average of just 85 PP100, which was best performance of all non-luxury Japanese brands.

said Mark Swenson, vice president, Total Customer Satisfaction, Nissan North America. “Positive IQS performance is a tribute to the ongoing efforts of Nissan Engineering, R&D, Quality and Manufacturing teams around the world, as well as our many global supplier partners. It is rewarding for us to see positive movement in J.D. Power IQS for three years running.”

The 2018 Nissan Frontier was the top-rated Midsize Pickup for the third consecutive year, while Maxima won Large Car honors with 57 PP100, the second highest score of any vehicle in the study. The popular Nissan Altima took top honors in the competitive Midsize Car segment with a 65 PP100 score, good for sixth among all vehicles in the survey and an 18-point improvement from the 2017 study. The all-new 100-percent electric Nissan LEAF was another bright spot among many for the brand, with a 17-point improvement in initial vehicle quality over the car’s previous generation surveyed in 2017. “Nissan’s J.D. Power IQS results for 2018 are encouraging because they reflect customer satisfaction directly from the people who buy and lease our vehicles,”

2018 Nissan Maxima

Nissan’s nine PP100 improvement marks the brand’s third year of significant improvement in the IQS report. Almost 76,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2018 model-year vehicles were surveyed for 233 potential problems among 33 brands and 240 models from February through May 2018 for this year’s J.D. Power IQS report.

2018 Nissan Frontier

Nissan’s good news went beyond vehicle nameplates. Its massive Smyrna manufacturing plant, the largest production volume assembly plant in North America, was awarded Bronze designation for its System Two (car line) tying for third best in quality performance among North American Manufacturing facilities. System Two assembles the Altima, Maxima and LEAF EV. Adding to the positive manufacturing news; Smyrna System One (SUV line), Canton 2, MS, and Aguascalientes 1, Mexico also scored above the industry average.

LINCOLN CONTINENTAL AND MKC TAKE TOP SEGMENT HONORS IN 2018 J.D. POWER’S INITIAL QUALITY STUDY DEARBORN, Mich., June 21, 2018 – The Lincoln Motor Company improved to a third-place ranking in luxury automotive brands in the 2018 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study, with both the Lincoln Continental and the Lincoln MKC ranking highest in their respective segments. The annual J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study – now in its 32nd year - measures vehicle quality by analyzing problems reported by owners in the first 90 days of ownership, with a lower score reflecting higher quality. Lincoln’s quality scores were boosted by its significant improvement in technology, with its vehicles earning better than average numbers for its SYNC 3 infotainment and connectivity systems. Overall, the brand improved to a third-place ranking among all premium brands, with 83 problems per 100 vehicles, down from 92 in 2017. “Lincoln has been focused on enhancing vehicle connectivity for clients,” said Scott Tobin, director of product development, Lincoln Motor Company. “These scores show we’re moving in the right direction as we work to deliver an outstanding ownership experience.”

Honda celebrates summer with the launch of significantly refreshed versions of its 8-passenger Pilot SUV and subcompact HR-V SUV, both featuring freshened styling, noteworthy powertrain refinements and major connected-car technology upgrades, including available new Display Audio systems with a physical volume knob, and Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ integration. In addition, Pilot and HR-V also benefit from the expanded application of Honda Sensing®, which will now be standard equipment on all Pilots, and on EX and higher grades of HR-V. The new Pilot and HR-V went on-sale at Honda dealerships on July 16 and July 24, respectively. With the addition of Honda Sensing® to the HR-V, Honda’s advanced safety and driverassistive technology will now be available or standard equipment on every nameplate in the Honda lineup, as the company moves toward its goal of 100 percent standard application of Honda Sensing® to all vehicles sold in the U.S. by 2022. “The continued fortification of the Honda light truck lineup with the refreshed 2019 Pilot and HR-V further enhances our already award-winning lineup of Honda SUVs,” said Henio Arcangeli, Jr., senior vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. and general manager of the Honda Division. Honda-brand light-truck sales are up 1.9 percent this year to 300,159 units through the end of May as Honda targets a fifth consecutive yearly sales record in 2018. For the first time in the brand’s history, Honda light trucks are expected to outsell Honda passenger cars this year on the way to another all-time light-truck sales record. Honda-brand light-truck sales growth is led by a 41 percent jump in sales of Pilot through the end of May on improved supply resulting from a major increase in Pilot production at the company’s Lincoln, Alabama plant, which now produces Pilot on a dedicated production line, alongside the Ridgeline pickup and Odyssey minivan, manufactured on a second production line.

transmission (available in Touring and Elite trims). Major available technology upgrades include 4G LTE in-car Wi-Fi, a larger Rear Entertainment System with Blu-Ray™ and streaming video capability, Honda’s innovative CabinTalk™ incar PA system and smartphone-enabled CabinControl™ app, along with a new Display Audio touchscreen system with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ integration, over-the-air updates and a volume knob. Consistent with Honda’s previously announced plan to make Honda Sensing® standard equipment on all models and trims within the next four years, the 2019 Pilot adopts the Honda Sensing® suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technology as standard equipment on all grades. The many upgrades reinforce Pilot’s fundamental capabilities while augmenting the state-of-the-art technology and familyfriendly character that has made it one of the most popular midsize 3-row SUVs. Pilot also remains one of the few models in the segment to offer 8-passenger seating. Full details of the 2019 Pilot refresh will be available when it goes on sale July 16. 2019 HR-V The 2019 Honda HR-V expands its appeal as a versatile and sporty 5-door subcompact SUV with the addition of new Sport and Touring trims, refreshed styling, new technology including an available new Display Audio system with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ integration and a more refined driving experience. The freshened HR-V also benefits from refinements to its standard Continuously Variable automatic Transmission (CVT) and available Real Time all-wheel drive system, additional sound deadening features and the addition of variable-ratio electric power steering.

All Honda SUVs, minivans and pickups are produced in North America using domestic and globally-sourced parts, with more than 60 percent in the U.S. at plants in Lincoln, Alabama, in Greensburg, Indiana and in East Liberty, Ohio. The Odyssey, Pilot and Ridgeline recently took three of the top 10 spots in Cars.com’s 2018 American-Made Index. The company will add production of CR-V, America’s bestselling SUV over the past 22 years, to a fourth North American plant, in Marysville, Ohio, later this year.

The 2019 HR-V is also available for the first time with Honda Sensing® safety and driver-assistive technology, standard on EX and higher trims. The addition of Honda Sensing® to HR-V means all Honda models, from the fun and affordable Fit to the amazingly capable Ridgeline pickup, are available with Honda’s advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies. Honda Sensing® is a more robust system of technologies than key competitors and includes Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM), Lane Keeping Assist (LKAS) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). Full details of the 2019 HR-V refresh will be available when it goes on sale July 24.

HYUNDAI EARNS FOUR TOP SPOTS IN AUTOPACIFIC VEHICLE SATISFACTION AWARDS FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., June 21, 2018 – Hyundai has been named 2018’s Most Satisfying Popular Brand in AutoPacific’s annual Vehicle Satisfaction Awards (VSAs). In addition to winning this overall title, Hyundai has three cars—the Sonata, Elantra and Accent—that earned top spots in the mid-size car, compact car and economy car categories, respectively. “With so many different brands for customers to choose from, Hyundai is proud to stand out as a leader in the mid-size car, compact car and economy car categories and as the overall winner of the VSA’s Most Satisfying Popular Brand award,” said Omar Rivera, director, Quality and Service Engineering, Hyundai Motor America. “Hyundai is committed to satisfying consumers’ needs—whether that be through cutting-edge technology or award-winning safety features—and we are extremely excited by the results of this year’s VSAs.” The AutoPacific VSAs serve as a benchmark for new-car satisfaction in the automotive industry. The results of the VSAs are determined through a survey in which respondents rate 40 different attributes reflecting what was important to them when choosing a new car, and their satisfaction with the vehicle following their purchase. This year, the VSAs drew survey results from 58,000 new-car owners of 2017 and 2018 automobiles to make their decision.

2018 Hyundai Sonata

2018 Hyundai Elantra

“Hyundai has consistently improved their lineup across the board,” said George Peterson, president, AutoPacific. “This year’s VSAs were competitive, but Hyundai’s products resonate top to bottom with their customers. From reliability and quality to exceptional exterior and interior design, Hyundai cars leave consumers satisfied.” The 2018 Sonata is Hyundai’s best Sonata yet, with award-winning safety features, innovative technology, and a beautifully redesigned exterior. The Sonata, designed with the rider in mind, seeks to elevate the interior experience, combining comfortable seating with convenience and safety.

2018 Hyundai Accent

In 2018, Hyundai’s Elantra model grew to have six different trims, to fit every consumer. This year’s host of Elantras comes with a variety of improvements. Improvements now available include; four-wheel disc brakes, heated outside mirrors, auto headlamp control and blind spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and lane change assist.

The new 2018 Hyundai Accent features a cascading grille and expressive and upscale design while boasting a contemporary and intuitive interior. With improved audio capabilities, premium comfort and convenience technology and exceptional safety features, the new Accent continues to offer customers a better riding experience.

HYUNDAI NAMED A TOP BRAND IN J.D. POWER’S 2018 U.S. INITIAL QUALITY STUDY (IQS) FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., June 20, 2018 – Hyundai’s new-vehicle quality was among the best in the industry, as the company ranked as the second-highest nonpremium brand in J.D. Power’s 2018 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS). Hyundai was one of the most improved brands, moving from sixth to third overall and reducing problems per 100 vehicles by 14. In the model segments, the Hyundai Tucson was the highest-ranked small SUV and the fourth-best model overall, while the Santa Fe ranked second in the midsize SUV segment. Hyundai’s cutting-edge Ulsan Plant, which produces Tucson, was awarded the Bronze Plant Assembly Line Quality Award for the Asia Pacific region. “Customers of the Hyundai brand can feel confident that they are selecting a new vehicle that has one of the best initial and long-term quality rankings in the entire automotive industry,” said Omar Rivera, director, Quality and Service Engineering, Hyundai Motor America. “J.D. Power’s IQS is the industry benchmark for newvehicle quality, and our 2018 ranking is a result of an enterprise-wide commitment to producing vehicles of the highest quality and educating customers on how to use their car’s technologies and features.” Hyundai’s strong showing in J.D. Power IQS follows its third place non-premium ranking in J.D. Power’s 2018 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS). Hyundai’s results in both of these studies demonstrate its quality leadership over time. Tucson also ranked highest in its class in that study. J.D. Power measures initial quality by the number of problems owners experience per 100 vehicles (PP100) during the first 90 days of ownership, with a lower score reflecting higher quality. Hyundai had 74 PP100, outpacing the industry average of 93 PP100. The 2018 U.S. IQS is based on responses from 75,712 purchasers and lessees of new 2018 model-year vehicles who were surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The study is based on a 233-question battery organized into eight vehicle categories designed to provide manufacturers with information to facilitate the identification of problems and drive product improvement. The study was fielded from February through May 2018. For more information about the 2018 U.S. IQS, visit http://www.jdpower.com/resource/us-initial-quality-study-iqs
