NJ GOV’T PLANS TO MERGE HALF OF ALL SCHOOL DISTRICTS - YOURS ON LIST?
?
Story courtesy of wobm.com. By Michael Symons How much do New Jersey’s small-town residents like their local school district? That might be put to the test in the months ahead. Among the far-reaching proposals made by the workgroup organized by Senate President Steve Sweeney is one that would require K-6 through K-8 districts to merge into K-12 school systems – a change that would impact districts that enroll 21 percent of New Jersey public school students. Nearly three in five districts aren’t K-12, and they enroll around 294,500 of the state’s 1.37 million public school students – approximately 208,000 elementary and middle school kids, plus 86,000 in regional high schools. Rutgers University professor Ray Caprio says the recommendation is mostly about better education – that more and varied programs could be offered that are now out-of-reach for small systems. “The goal is primarily improving school districts, although we would note that over time there should be some cost savings and efficiencies,” said Caprio, who said the proposal isn’t about trimming back teachers’ salaries or reducing jobs.

“Although I think there are certainly economic benefits from regionalization, I think more importantly there are educational benefits for the state’s children and for the state’s economic well-being,” Davy said.
Full calendar at: thesandpaper.villagesoup.com

But former state education commissioner Lucille Day said that’s not the biggest reason to do it. She said K-12 districts have a more coordinated curriculum, seamless calendars and better opportunities for students.
Davy says even if school districts reorganize,
individual local schools would stay open.
“It’s really important to emphasize that the idea of regionalization is not to consolidate schools and close schools all across the state,” Davy said.
“It wouldn’t be that you’d close down all the small elementary schools and, you know, build one elementary school that all those children in that regional district would attend. You would keep the local schools,” she said. Changes from a move to K-12 districts would apply unevenly around the state. The biggest impact would be in Hunterdon County, where the elementary and middle schools in 26 municipalities feed into five regional high schools. Ninety-three percent of the county’s students are enrolled in districts that aren’t K-12.
Separate from the K-12 mandate, the report from the workgroup also suggests allowing two counties to volunteer to create countywide school districts. Caprio said the state should pass a law allowing it and providing incentives to counties that want to consider it. “There are places in New Jersey, counties, where this would not work,” Caprio said. “However, there are others – I’m not going to put a number but if I had to, maybe four to six counties – where it would be viable.” Last school year, across New Jersey, more than 986,000 students were enrolled in K-12 districts – averaging 4,400 students in those 224 districts.
The restructuring would also affect the districts that enroll 49 percent to 57 percent of students in Warren, Monmouth, Burlington, Cape May and Sussex counties.
Around 208,000 students are in more than 270 districts that don’t include high schools that would have to merge. Many would presumably merge into the existing 45 regional high-school districts, which currently enroll 86,000 students and exist primarily to serve the same towns that have K-4, K-5, K-6, K-8 and K-9 districts.
There are also counties where mandating that there be only K-12 districts would have practically no impact. All students in Mercer County already attend schools in K-12 districts, and 3 percent of kids or less attend such schools in Hudson, Union, Middlesex and Essex counties.
Another 86,600 students are in unique schools that would presumably be unaffected by any district consolidation plans – roughly 49,500 in charter schools, 28,700 in vocational school districts, 4,650 in special services districts and 3,850 in “renaissance schools” in Camden.
LIST OF OCEAN COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICTS THAT WOULD BE AFFECTED.

Manahawkin- Join us on October 21st for the Causeway Super Family 5k! The Causeway Family of Dealerships, along with Clamtown CrossFit, will be hosting a 5k race to benefit Fulfill (formerly the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties). Fulfill is a great local charity with facilities located in Neptune and Toms River. While their goal is combatting hunger in our communities, their mission is much more comprehensive. They also want to “build food security in Monmouth & Ocean Counties and to make sure that all people at all times have access to enough nutritious food to maintain an active and healthy life.” So, providing over 13 million meals per year through food pantries, mobile pantries, and soup kitchens is just the beginning. There’s the Kids Cafe, where
students in the Culinary Training Program work beside FoodBank chefs to prepare an average hot meals for children at after-school programs. The Culinary Training Program is free, and graduates receive assistance getting jobs in the hospitality industry. Fulfill also has dedicated Health Care Navigators to help individuals and families apply for healthcare coverage as well as financial assistance. The 5k will start at 9:30am on Sunday October 21st at the Stafford Municipal Complex on Bay Ave. The race will be a fast and flat, one-loop course beginning at the complex. It will head north to Stafford Avenue, turn right onto Hilliard Boulevard, then another right onto Bay Avenue and return to the starting area. There will be door prizes, age-group awards, and refreshments.

FULFILL ASKS JERSEY SHORE TO TAKE ACTION TO END HUNGER! SEPTEMBER IS HUNGER ACTION MONTH
This September, Fulfill (formerly The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties), together with the Feeding America nationwide network of food banks, will mobilize across all 50 states in an effort to bring an end to hunger. Hunger Action Month is designed to inspire people to take action and raise awareness of the fact that 41 million Americans, including nearly 13 million children, are food insecure, according to the USDA. In Monmouth and Ocean Counties, more than 132,000
people struggle with hunger and may not know where they’ll find their next meal.
This year the campaign will focus on the strong connections between hunger and health, and ask people to consider how it must feel to live with an empty stomach, which puts a healthy life and a promising future at risk. To learn more about Fulfill and how to get involved in September and throughout the year, please visit www.fulfillnj.org.

PURGE: At the end of each week, re-evaluate the homework papers, books, projects, and other loose ends your child has accumulated. Toss, recycle, or store whatever’s no longer needed in the bag. ACCESSORIZE: Keep necessities from floating about by attaching them to the backpack. Try a snap-on hand sanitizer, for instance, or a lip balm that comes with a keychain-style container. CATEGORIZE: Designate certain pockets for particular items: larger pockets for books, a smaller one for homework folders, a small side pocket for pens and pencils. You can even label them if you need to help your kids keep track of what goes where. KEEP IT UP: Motivate your child to stick to those good habits by making the weekly purge a family ritual. While he’s sorting his backpack, clean out your own workbag or purse.

HISTORY OF LABOR DAY Labor Day: What it Means
More than a century after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers. Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.” But Peter McGuire’s place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic. The First Labor Day The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883. In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor

Labor Day Legislation
Founder of Labor Day

By Chris Perkins
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed in 1885 and 1886. From these, a movement developed to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. During 1887 four more states — Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York — created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1884, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.
SUMMER 2018
He’s also aware some were mildly surprised when he made a good block or two in Thursday’s 26-24 loss to Tampa Bay. Gesicki, who has improved his blocking during his first dozen practices, didn’t surprise himself, however. Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a “workingmen’s holiday” on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country. A Nationwide Holiday Women’s Auxiliary Typographical UnionThe form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday — a street parade to exhibit to the public “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations” of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement. The character of the Labor Day celebration has undergone a change in recent years, especially in large industrial centers where mass displays and huge parades have proved a problem. This change, however, is more a shift in emphasis and medium of expression. Labor Day addresses by leading union officials, industrialists, educators, clerics and government officials are given wide coverage in newspapers, radio, and television. The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation’s strength, freedom, and leadership — the American worker.
“That’s the expectation,” he said of successfully executing a block. “It’s not like ‘Oh my God, Mike blocked somebody!’ I know that that’s what everybody thinks, but that’s not what it is. “When I’m out there, that’s the expectation. I’m not going to turn around and let somebody run free. That’s my job, and whether I’m catching a fade or blocking a defensive end, that’s my job, and I’m going to do it to the best of my ability.” Coach Adam Gase, who has been known to needle a player or two, plays both sides of the fence. “He knows how I feel about anybody else’s opinions,” Gase before cracking a slight smile. “I’m always killing him on it anyways, just a reminder of what everybody thought. “The thing that I really appreciate about Mike is he wants to do it. He wants to get better at blocking and he doesn’t want to be a receiver. I see him go out there and he tries to do it and he’ll get crushed a couple times; but you don’t see him shy away from it the next time. I’ve seen tight ends in the past that when that happens, they don’t want any part of it because they don’t want to be embarrassed. He just lines right back up and does it again.” Gesicki, who has been consistently going with the first-team offense for the past few practices, credits tight ends coach Shane Day and his teammates for his improvement. “Nobody believes in me being able to block outside of the guys in this locker room,” Gesicki said after Sunday’s practice. “And that’s all I need, is the guys in this locker room and these coaches to believe in me. They do each and every day, so I appreciate them.” It might be a while before Gesicki is regarded as a complete tight end as opposed to a passcatching tight end. His blocking still appears to need improvement. But Gase said Gesicki is working toward that goal. “He doesn’t want to get taken out and everybody says what [you guys] think, [which is] when he goes onto the field, it’s a pass,” Gase said. As for that type of talk, whether it’s in conventional media or social media, Gesicki said he’s learning that ignoring it is the best policy. “I think in the past when I was younger, I used to use all of the outside stuff as motivation,” he said, “but it doesn’t mean anything. “All that matters is what’s in the Dolphins locker room, the coaches and the players in there. Everything else, if people want to write stuff or talk about stuff, it’s pointless.”

SURVIVE BACK-TO-SCHOOL
Southern Regional Alumni News

Hold on parents we’re going back-to-school. We need to get real and formulate a plan of action to keep our faith, sanity and bodies in check as we face another school year. Beyond the fun of buying school supplies and cute outfits, there are other tools to help you prepare for another year. Transform the beginning-of-the-school-year jumble into a mastery with the following 7 practical tips.
Boys Basketball Congratulations Southern Regional Boys Basketball Alum Dennis Harrington on his new coaching position at DePauw University. Dennis is a graduate of the Class of 2009. He is the 4th alum currently coaching college basketball along with Kristen Sharkey - University of Buffalo WBB, Avery Hodgson - Ocean County College WBB and Allison Spaschak - University of Brockport WBB. #RamPride
Set pragmatic academic goals. Most parents push their kids too hard to help them academically. While having prodigies is great, you need to be realistic and set small goals for your child. Learning doesn’t always come fast for all kids, so do yourself a favor and curtail ambitions. Many children who are pressured may withdraw from you and teachers. “If you constantly demand A’s from your child, you may be sending the wrong message,” psychologist Peggy Tsatsoulis suggested. Kids have enough pressure at school with their workloads. If they don’t receive an “A” be okay with the “B” instead of freaking out. This takes the pressure off everyone and will create less anxiety in the house.
Southern Regional Football Schedule
Get a head start. Start setting up a routine by doing a practice run. Take on the challenge now rather than waiting until the last minute. Get your up child early enough so that they can adapt to the new routine and reward their diligence. This also includes meeting teachers ahead of time and learning your kids class schedules. Do some groundwork with the teachers and be open in sharing the goals you have for the semester. Teachers face a difficult job and can’t keep kids and the parents happy all the time. Share your appreciation with them ahead of time and drop a thank you note during the year as this can go a long way.
Date Team Time Friday 9/7 Jackson Memorial 7pm Saturday 9/15 @Lacey 1pm Saturday 9/22 Marlboro 1pm Saturday 9/29 @Lakewood 1pm Friday 10/5 Wall 7pm Friday 10/12 @Central 7pm Friday 10/19 Howell 7pm Saturday 10/27 @Toms River North noon
Shop early for school supplies. This might be too late, but keep in mind that if you shop throughout the year for school supplies you won’t have to deal with the last-minute rush. Purchase items on clearance and create a cabinet for supplies ahead of time. You don’t need to buy brand-name items if the teacher asks for Crayola, go for the off-brand if it’s on sale.
Parent Teacher Communication: Dos and Don’ts Do send thank-you notes once in a while. (“Sam really enjoyed making slime during science yesterday.”) Teachers love knowing they matter in a child’s life.
Putting your child’s concrete goals in action is a lot easier (and more effective!) when you’ve got a great bond with his teacher. After all, she may spend more waking hours with your child than you do — and see behaviors that you might miss. Follow these do’s and dont’s in order to forge a strong connection: Do lay the groundwork for a friendly partnership by telling the teacher how excited you are that your child is in her class. And share the goals you set with your kid. She’ll appreciate your proactive approach.
Don’t bad-mouth the teacher within earshot of your child. Even if you think she’s the Wicked Witch of the West, you need to present a united front, or your child will lose interest in her teacher, and
possibly learning.
Do make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep (it’s the number one request from most teachers!). Tired children have a harder time focusing and may become overly silly or emotional in class.
Don’t dictate your expectations. Saying, “Noah’s mastered his times tables, so you can put him in the highest math group” puts your opinion above her observations. Let her assess your child’s needs. Do stay on top of class events by reading her notes or website posts.
Don’t talk to the principal about your classroom concerns before you’ve addressed them with the teacher first.
Don’t call the teacher at home unless it’s an emergency. E-mail or phone the school to set up a time. And don’t hit her up at open house or school assemblies with personal questions about your kid.
Do be understanding. Teachers face a difficult job: Balancing the academic, social, and emotional well-being of a roomful of kids, plus keeping parents happy, isn’t easy!

Make dishes ahead of time to ease the stress of making sure people eat during the week by using the slow cooker. The Frugal Girls recommend their orange chicken recipe to help busy parents. Prepare this before you leave for work in a slow cooker and dinner will be ready when you get home. For the ingredients, you will need 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts, ¾ cup Smuckers Sweet Orange Marmalade, a ¾ cup of Sweet Baby Ray’s Original BBQ Sauce and 2 Tbsp. of soy sauce. The instructions are simply to cook the chicken in the slow cooker for 6 hours on low. After 6 hours on low, drain juices from slow cooker. Mix together barbecue sauce, orange marmalade and soy sauce. Pour mixture over chicken and cook on high for 30 more minutes. By preparing meals ahead of time, you will save more money and stress less. Reward yourself. During the initial weeks of running around like a mad person, go out for dinner, see a movie or hold a Mexican night on Friday for everyone to join in. Then take time for yourself by getting a massage or reading a magazine. During the transition of going back-to-school as a family, there will be an obvious need to have something to look forward to. You don’t need to drive yourself insane this year. With a little preparation and determination, backto-school doesn’t have to be a encumbrance.

Most weeks you won’t have time to even eat, but if you have 20 minutes go for a walk or run before everyone wakes up. Exercise can be an outlet to deal with stress, fatigue and can help the body fight bacteria off better. Be aware that you also need to keep your composure when you child has a tantrum before you leave in the morning as this is a typical trademark of kids. Take a deep breath and take your mind to another place because your stress will fuel kids negative behavior. If you’re eating healthy and have an outlet for anxiety, you will be better equipped to handle situations like a cantankerous child.

Do an end of the week purge of backpacks and gym bags with your child. Junk will accumulate like loose paper, books and empty food wrappers. Getting rid of non-essential items will cut down on clutter and help you find what is needed. Donna Goldberg, director of The Organized Student proposed to designate pockets for books, pencils, projects and use folders with labels to stay on track. This will teach your child to create healthy habits for years to come. Also, start adding doctor visits, play dates and other meetings into your digital calendar by prioritizing them. You can also display a calendar to use and attach important documents to it during the week as things can easily become lost.

FORD DELIVERS NEW TRANSIT TO HELP FEED DETROIT’S HOMELESS AT ROOSEVELT PARK NEAR MICHIGAN CENTRAL TRAIN STATION DETROIT, July 30, 2018 – Karen Gates and her team of volunteers at The Ark Association are on a mission. Every Saturday for the past 17 years they have set up shop at Detroit’s Roosevelt Park in front of Michigan Central Station to provide food, clothing and hope to the hungry and homeless. Recently, the vehicle used to transport food and supplies broke down, limiting The Ark’s ability to serve members of the community who have come to rely on the meal service.
On Saturday, Ford Motor Company delivered a 12-passenger Transit van to help Gates and her team continue their mission. The delivery occurred outside the Ford Resource and Engagement Center (FREC), a community center in nearby southwest Detroit that provides residents with a variety of services. “Ford is continuing to be a good neighbor and responding to an urgent need that will make people’s lives better,” said Shawn Wilson, multicultural manager, Ford Motor Company Fund. “Our goal is to strengthen communities and many of the people served by The Ark would also benefit from the food hub, tax, legal and other free services provided at the FREC.” Last month, Ford announced it acquired the iconic Michigan Central Station and plans to transform it into the centerpiece of a vibrant new campus in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood that will serve as an innovation hub for Ford’s vision for the future of transportation.

Ford and Ford Fund provide nearly $20 million a year for education, arts, culture, hunger relief and more in and around the city of Detroit. In addition, the Ford Volunteer Corps has worked some 10,000 community service projects in the local area over the past 10 years.

NISSAN CELEBRATES 13 YEARS OF BUILDING SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES WITH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nissan North America continues its long-standing partnership with Habitat for Humanity with a $1 million donation to help build affordable, homes in partnership with families in need of decent housing. Nissan’s contributions to Habitat for Humanity in North America amount to more than $15.5 million over the past 13 years. “There is a growing need for affordable housing across the U.S.,” said Nissan Vice President of Corporate Development and Social Responsibility Rebecca Vest. “Nissan values its partnership with Habitat for Humanity because it helps build sustainable communities where our employees live and work. Our employees look forward to working alongside future homeowners, and their experiences affirm our corporate vision to enrich people’s lives.” The majority of Nissan’s 2018 donation will go toward the building costs of Habitat homes in locations where Nissan has an operational presence, for vehicle purchases for use by local Habitat organizations and sponsorship of the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project.
Habitat Affiliates This year, Nissan employees will volunteer to support Habitat in these U.S. locations: Arizona Habitat for Humanity of Central Arizona California Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley Colorado Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver No place like home: Nissan Canton, Habitat for Humanity Mississippi Capital Area partner on 11th Home build

“Nissan’s 13-year commitment to Habitat has played an important role in helping families achieve affordable homeownership,” said Colleen Finn Ridenhour, the senior vice president of development at Habitat for Humanity. “We are grateful for Nissan’s continuous generous support and the many volunteers who have built alongside future homeowners.” Nissan’s partnership with Habitat began in 2005 to support recovery efforts after hurricanes Katrina and Rita damaged the Gulf Coast region. Nissan donated 50 trucks and mobilized employees to assist in home building. Since 2006, Nissan has donated an additional 96 vehicles and Nissan’s employees have logged nearly 100,000 volunteer hours with Habitat for Humanity, building 86 homes across the United States.

Rear Door Alert technology to become standard on all four-door Nissan nameplates NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nissan is making Rear Door Alert technology standard on more models to remind customers to check the back seat and help reduce potential heatstroke incidents. Originally developed by two mothers who are also engineers, Rear Door Alert reminds owners to check the rear seat upon exiting their vehicle by using a series of distinctive honks as the driver walks away from the vehicle. Nissan is the first automaker to use a honking horn as an alert for this type of feature. “I’m proud to see Nissan lead the way by making Rear Door Alert standard on more models,” said Marlene Mendoza, a mechanical engineer who helped create the technology. “What started as a chat with my colleague, Elsa Foley, is now innovative technology being adopted in more Nissan models. It is a testament to Nissan’s culture.” After Mendoza and Foley presented the idea, the project moved into full development at Nissan Technical Center North America (NTCNA) in Farmington Hills, Michigan. “The idea was inspired when I accidentally left a pan of lasagna in the back seat of my car overnight,” added Mendoza, a mother of three, who was pregnant when the idea struck. “The worst thing was the car smelled for days, but it made me ask myself, ‘What if I left something far more important back there?’” The temperature inside of a vehicle can increase to dangerous levels quickly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Even with moderate outside temperatures in the mid-60s, a vehicle’s interior can quickly heat up to more than 110 degrees Fahrenheit. How Rear Door Alert works RDA, which currently is standard equipment on the
Nissan’s Rear Door Alert is the industry’s first system that uses the horn, in addition to door sensors and a message display on the center instrument panel, shown here on the 2019 Altima, to remind drivers to check the back seat after the vehicle is parked. By model year 2022, Nissan plans to have RDA standard on all four-door trucks, sedans and SUV nameplates. 2018 Nissan Pathfinder, monitors when the rear door is opened and closed before and after the vehicle is in motion. The system responds with a series of notifications if a rear door was used prior to a trip, but was not re-opened after the trip. Once the vehicle is in park and the ignition is turned off, the system will first display a notification in the instrument panel and progresses to subtle, distinctive chirps of the horn. The RDA system is easy to configure and can be temporarily, or permanently, turned off through a menu in the cluster display. “If you open a rear door and put something in the rear seat, Rear Door Alert will help you remember when you
get to your destination that you may have forgotten it,” Mendoza said. “By drawing attention back to the vehicle while the driver is walking away, the honking alerts you to recheck the back seat in addition to visual or interior audible alerts.” Mendoza (listed as Henry on the patent) and Foley are the inventors on U.S. Patent No. 9,734,695 for the “activity monitoring apparatus,” otherwise known as Rear Door Alert. This is the first patent granted to either Mendoza or Foley. To learn more about the Rear Door Alert and the full Nissan vehicle lineup, visit here. 1. Rear Door Alert is only intended to remind people to check the rear seats of their vehicle under certain circumstances. It cannot prevent accidents caused by inattention or carelessness.

LINCOLN NAVIGATOR: FIRST AMERICAN VEHICLE EVER TO TOP J.D. POWER APEAL STUDY
80 percent of vehicles are sold with the available Technology Package. The Navigator has been riding a crest of popularity, luring clients from its luxury competitors. Lincoln sales statistics show more than 50 percent of Navigator sales are conquest, with buyers coming from Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac, Land Rover and other luxury brands. Navigator clients also are skewing younger than traditional Lincoln buyers, with approximately 50 percent between the ages of 34 and 54. The APEAL study showed that in its launch year, the 2018 Navigator improved by 71 points, becoming the highest-scoring vehicle in the entire industry, the first domestic vehicle to achieve that feat. The Lincoln Navigator’s score of 915 is the highest recorded in this generation of the study. DEARBORN, Mich., July 26, 2018 – The 2018 Lincoln Navigator, the sleek full-size luxury SUV that auto dealers can barely keep on their lots, has now officially been ranked by customers as the most appealing vehicle in the entire industry, marking the first time an American vehicle has ever dominated the J.D. Power Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) study. In fact, based on customer scores that lauded everything from Navigator’s technology to seat comfort, its score is the highest in this generation of the study (2013-2018) besting other luxury brand vehicle nameplates. The study measures owners’ emotional attachment and level of excitement across 77 attributes that range from the power customers feel when they step on the gas to the sense of comfort and luxury they experience when climbing into the driver’s seat. These attributes are combined into an overall APEAL index score measured on a 1,000-point scale.
BEHIND THE BADGE: EXPLORING THE THEORIES BEHIND LINCOLN’S STAR LOGO
Few automotive logos carry the legacy of luxury and prestige more than the Lincoln emblem. For decades, the premium automaker has presented its star-like logo as a symbol of its premium class. Even after half a century, Lincoln’s cross-sectional rectangle stands out among dozens of other badges on the road. But where did it come from and what does it mean? Many theories exist, but is there an answer?
History of the Lincoln Company The Lincoln Motor Company was founded in 1917 by engineer Henry M. Leland after he co-founded–and consequently departed from–Cadillac. He formed Lincoln during World War I to build Liberty aircraft engines until the war ended and the assembly plants began producing automobiles. After falling on tough economic times in the early 1920s, Lincoln was bought by the Ford Motor Company and retooled as Ford’s luxury line. Leland named the Lincoln company after his hero Please see BADGE on page 10
The Lincoln Navigator excels in many of these areas, with features like adjustable drive modes that allow drivers to adjust to changing weather or road conditions with the turn of a dial, and optional Perfect Position seats that adjust up to 30 ways to offer the ultimate in comfortable, personalized seating, plus heating, cooling and massage functions. “At Lincoln, we’re always thinking about our clients – what they like and what they need,” says Joy Falotico, president, The Lincoln Motor Company. “To have Navigator become the first American vehicle ever to top the J.D. Power APEAL study is a testament to the unwavering dedication by the Lincoln team to create an exceptional and effortless ownership experience.” Clients also are choosing to outfit their Navigators with purposeful technologies like the head-up display, active park assist and driver assistance options. In fact, more than
Specifically noted as Navigator’s top strengths compared to the Large Premium SUV average were its voice recognition system, fuel economy, the comfort of its third-row seats and its front-end styling. The Continental, Lincoln’s flagship sedan, maintained its standing as the leader in the Midsize Premium Car segment. In the annual 2018 J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study results announced earlier this year, both the Lincoln Continental and the Lincoln MKC ranking highest in their respective segments. Overall, Lincoln improved 12 points and is now ranked 4th among premium brands, up from 6th last year. In addition to Lincoln Continental, the Ford F-150, Ford Mustang and Ford Expedition all placed at the top of their respective segments. Expedition scored highest among non-premium models in the industry-wide study. Plus, Ford F-Series Super Duty ranked among the top three in the large heavy-duty pickup segment.
THE NEW LINCOLN NAUTILUS By Jennifer Maier The Lincoln Motor Company introduces the new Lincoln Nautilus, a midsize SUV delivering a powerful turbocharged engine and a suite of advanced technologies to give drivers greater confidence on the road. Nautilus, the successor to Lincoln MKX, joins the 2019 MKC, the elegant Continental, the all new Navigator, and the stylish MKZ for a lineup of vehicles instantly recognizable as Lincoln. Lincoln’s midsize SUV continues to attract new clients to the brand, with a conquest rate of nearly 40 percent. New clients are crossing over to Lincoln from Cadillac, Lexus and more. Sales continue to be strong and the vehicle is on track to deliver its best sales year since its introduction in 2007. Tasteful design, exceptional craftsmanship and room for up to five passengers make it a popular choice for clients
in the market for a luxury crossover vehicle. Personalized elegance The distinctive design of the Lincoln Nautilus aligns with the rest of the Lincoln family, presenting a strong, bold signature grille. The midsize utility vehicle maintains its unique, sleek shape, offering a harmonious aesthetic
and aerodynamic efficiency. A new selection of wheels allows clients to order a Lincoln Nautilus to suit their personal style. Lincoln continues its transformation into a brand sporting a younger and more modern image. The Nautilus is expected to hit the market at the end of this summer with a MSRP starting from $40,340.

BADGE
Continued from page 9 Abraham Lincoln, whom he voted for in the 1860 presidential election. The name was an appropriate choice considering the brand became known for providing limousines for US Presidents. Origin of the Lincoln Logo Over the years, many theories on the origin of Lincoln’s emblem have developed. On one hand, people assert it’s a compass with hands directed to the four corners of the earth. This showed the brand’s intent to spread its vehicles across the world. Others assert the emblem, often called the Lincoln Star, is a celestial body that reflects the brand’s opulence and radiance. Still others claim the badge has no real meaning behind it. So which is the truth? The most accepted explanation of the Lincoln logo is that it’s based on the Continental star, which was adapted as Lincoln’s emblem in the 1950s when the Lincoln and Continental lines merged. However, the other predominant theory is that it’s based on the coat of arms emblem used by the brand in the 1930s, which involved a red cross in the center of a shield. Regardless of the origin of Lincoln’s emblem, the iconic four-point star has become synonymous with the luxury and prestige of the brand over the years. KONA IRON MAN EDITION SUV MAKES GLOBAL DEBUT AT 2018 SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON
SAN DIEGO, Calif., July 19, 2018 – “My armor’s maneuverable, fast, and lots of fun at parties,” – Tony Stark. In Stark-like fashion, Hyundai today unveiled a special edition Iron Man-inspired Kona SUV on the opening day of San Diego Comic-Con 2018. Taking center stage at the Marvel booth, the Kona Iron Man Edition features both exterior and interior design elements that closely resemble and give a nod to the dynamic Iron Man suit. The Kona Iron Man Edition will be available to customers via a limited global production run. Production is scheduled to begin in December, with the first units available in the first quarter of 2019. For more details, visit KonaIronManEdition.com. “Hyundai’s ongoing collaboration with Marvel is a great way for us to become a part of what people are interested in and engage with a highly passionate fan base,” said Vice President Minsoo Kim, head of Marketing Division, Hyundai Motor Company. “Our relationship is more than just product placement as we aim to create custom experiences that resonate with the Marvel audience. The Kona Iron Man Edition is a perfect example of blending our two worlds together into one special vehicle that we hope will excite fans of both brands all around the globe.” “Hyundai is excited to work with Marvel on the Kona Iron Man Edition; it really is the perfect mash up,” said Dean Evans, chief marketing officer, Hyundai Motor America. “The first time we saw the Kona, we knew its unique, rugged design drew a compelling resemblance to the strong and iconic Iron Man suit. There is also a nice synergy between the fun and adventurous nature of the Kona and the playful yet bold character of Iron Man/Tony Stark. The outcome is a remarkable special edition that we’re sure will appeal to Marvel fans and SUV enthusiasts alike.” “Seeing this car come to life is like wish fulfillment for so many of us,” said Mindy Hamilton, Marvel’s SVP of Global Partnerships & Marketing. “When you grow up reading comics, you dream of seeing that technology and those inventions become reality. We hope that everyone
has just as much fun jumping into this one-of-a-kind vehicle as they would putting on the actual Iron Man suit of armor!”
for the D-pillars, and a dark chrome front grille. The exterior color is an exclusive Iron Man red with matte gray.
On the outside, the Kona Iron Man Edition has a unique front-lighting signature, including a custom daytime running light form that closely resembles the facemask and eye shape of the Iron Man suit. This shape is immediately recognizable and is one of the key design inspirations for Kona.
Inside, Tony Stark’s signature adorns the instrument panel alongside a unique Iron Man shift lever knob, a special Head’s Up Display and center stack featuring Iron Man visual graphics, and a custom seat design.
Besides the front fascia design and unique lighting signature, other Stark-like flourishes include an Iron Man mask motif on the roof, a unique V-shaped hood garnish, front-fender Iron Man mask badging, Stark Industries lower fascia and rear door decals, Iron Man-engraved headlamp internal surfaces, custom 18-inch alloy wheels with Iron Man mask center caps, an Iron Man engraving
The Kona Iron Man Edition is the latest project to emerge from the ongoing collaboration between Marvel and Hyundai. This summer, the all-new 2019 Veloster Turbo appears in Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and The Wasp. That integration was accompanied by a fully integrated marketing campaign that included new commercials and an interactive sweepstakes offering fans a chance to attend a pre-release screening of the film.
HYUNDAI VELOSTER TURBO AWARDED EDITORS’ CHOICE HONORS BY CAR AND DRIVER FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., July 30, 2018 – Hyundai has again proven its comprehensive vehicle quality across a diverse lineup with another Car and Driver’s Editors’ Choice award, this time for the Hyundai Veloster Turbo. Hyundai Kona, Ioniq and Accent have also received Car and Driver Editors’ Choice Awards this year. Veloster Turbo has been recognized for its performance, distinctive design and great value. All Veloster Turbos deliver exceptional value with 18” alloy wheels, Infinity premium audio, proximity key with push button start and standard Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™ capability. “With an expressive design and cutting-edge infotainment features, the Veloster Turbo continues to underscore outstanding value and performance for our customers,” said Scott Margason, Director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “It is an honor to be named a Top Pick by Car and Driver and another proof point of Hyundai’s commitment to excellence.”

Car and Driver’s Editors’ Choice awards are selected by combing through the hundreds of vehicles they test and review each year to highlight the standouts in each class. Broad criteria, including the results of their Buyer’s Guide in-depth testing, track performance, and value, help to narrow their choices to segment leaders, helping buyers decide which models are worth their consideration.
