THE FOODBANK OF MONMOUTH & OCEAN COUNTIES IS NOW FULFILL.

The FoodBank of Monmouth & Ocean Counties is now Fulfill. They changed their name, because they’re doing more than ever to change lives in our communities for the better.

they take a comprehensive approach to meeting the nutritional needs of children through multiple kid’s feeding programs. It’s not just about providing food for children who are hungry, it’s about continually seeking better ways to keep healthy food on the table.

The new name reflects the fact that today they focus on more than food distribution. It reflects their commitment to fulfill more of the needs of our neighbors and win the battle against hunger. It reflects their comprehensive approach that goes beyond providing food and helps those in need get to a place where they can get back on their feet for good. Ending hunger in our communities is a complex challenge, so Fulfill provides a full suite of programs to provide the resources people need to become self-sufficient.

Many of our neighbors still go hungry every day. That’s why their primary mission remains providing food for those in need in our community. Fulfill understands the role food plays in leading a healthy life, so they work hard to provide our neighbors with the most nutritious food possible. Their nutritional team categorizes our food with a nutrition rating, so our partner agencies understand the nutritional value of the food they distribute to their community.

Fulfill’s mission is to alleviate hunger and build food security in Monmouth & Ocean Counties and to make sure that all people at all times have access to enough nutritious food to maintain an active and healthy life. At Fulfill, they understand that ending hunger in our communities is a complex challenge. It takes a total approach to providing the resources people need to become financially sound and self

sufficient. In 2017, they provided over 13 million meals through their network of over 300 food pantries and soup kitchens. But their fight against hunger goes beyond food distribution and includes a full suite of service programs designed to get our neighbors in need back on their feet for good. The Fulfill Mobile Pantries distribute food in locations that are not well served by food pantries. Our neighbors in need of food can go to these sites to receive non-perishable food as well as fresh produce and baked goods. The mobile pantries operate at several low-income and other locations in Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Nearly 40,000 of our children receive food from Fulfill each year. Healthy nutrition is especially important for growing kids because it supports their physical development as well as their emotional well-being and intellectual development. At Fulfill,

FULFILL ASKS JERSEY SHORE TO TAKE ACTION TO END HUNGER! SEPTEMBER IS HUNGER ACTION MONTH

This September, Fulfill (formerly The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties), together with the Feeding America nationwide network of food banks, will mobilize across all 50 states in an effort to bring an end to hunger. Hunger Action Month is designed to inspire people to take action and raise awareness of the fact that 41 million Americans, including nearly 13 million children, are food insecure, according to the USDA. In Monmouth and Ocean Counties, more than 132,000

people struggle with hunger and may not know where they’ll find their next meal.

This year the campaign will focus on the strong connections between hunger and health, and ask people to consider how it must feel to live with an empty stomach, which puts a healthy life and a promising future at risk. To learn more about Fulfill and how to get involved in September and throughout the year, please visit www.fulfillnj.org.

STAFFORD TOWNSHIP LIONS CLUB IS PROVIDING FREE VISION SCREENING FOR CHILDREN AGES 6 MONTHS TO 12 YEARS OF AGE! Saturday, October 13th 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at Bay Avenue Community Center, 775 East Bay Avenue, Manahawkin, NJ 08050 WHY is vision screening important? The first few years of a child’s life are critical in the development of good vision. Children should have their vision checked for issues such as misaligned eyes, and problems that need correction with eyeglasses. These problems are not always evident by simply looking at a child. Young children often compensate for vision problems so well that parents, teachers, and pediatricians are unaware of a problem. Many common vision-robbing conditions such as “lazy eye” can be effectively treated if detected in a child’s formative years. Stafford Township Lions Club will provide a simple, non- invasive and cost-free visionscreening test performed on young children. It requires no medication or preparation and is PAINLESS. It does require parental permission. Forms will be available for parental/guardian approval prior to the eye exam. The “Spot Vision Screener”, a hand held device can quickly detect potential vision problems:

• Hyperopia – “Far-sightedness” is the difficulty seeing objects that are near. Untreated this can contribute to “crossing of the eyes” but can be corrected with glasses. • Myopia – “Near-sightedness” is when the eyes focus incorrectly, making distant objects appear blurred. It can be treated with glasses. • Astigmatism- A condition in which the cornea has an abnormal curve causing out-offocus vision. • Anisometropia – This condition can adversely affect the development of binocular vision in infants and children. The brain will often suppress the vision of the blurrier eye in a condition called Amblyopia or “lazy eye.” • Strabismus – Eyes are not directed to an object simultaneously. Sometimes the eyes deviate outward and sometimes inward.

Recipe Corner PUMPKIN CREAM CHEESE SWIRL MUFFINS Pumpkin Cream Cheese Swirl Muffins: moist spiced pumpkin muffins are topped with sweet cream cheese that melts into them as they bake and only take 30 minutes!

INGREDIENTS MUFFIN: 1 tablespoon pumpkin spice 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 (15 oz) can pumpkin (pure pumpkin puree) 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup packed brown sugar CREAM CHEESE 2 large eggs 8 oz cream cheese 1 3/4 cups all purpose flour 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1 large egg yolk 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

SWIRL:

INSTRUCTIONS: • Preheat oven to 375°F. Place paper baking cups into muffin pan. Set aside. • In a medium bowl, whisk flour, pumpkin spice, baking soda and salt until well combined. Set aside. • In large bowl, whisk together pumpkin, sugar and brown sugar. • Beat in eggs, vegetable oil and vanilla extract. Slowly whisk in the flour mixture, until there are no lumps. Fill muffin tins 3/4 full. • In a medium bowl, beat cream cheese until smooth. Add in sugar, egg yolk and vanilla extract and beat until well combined. • Top each muffin with about 1 tablespoon of cream cheese mixture and use a toothpick to swirl it into the batter. This will not look smooth, but it will bake up much prettier. (You can see exactly how I did this in the video above.) • Bake muffins for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. • I liked these best at room temperature or even slightly chilled! Store in an airtight container in the fridge.

SOUTHERN OCEAN MEDICAL CENTER KEEPS PATIENTS SAFE WITH THE MOST ADVANCED INFECTION-FIGHTING TECHNOLOGY Ultraviolet System Emphasizes Hospital’s Commitment to Protecting Patients Against Infections August 30, ― Manahawkin, NJ ― Hackensack Meridian Health Southern Ocean Medical Center now provides the most advanced technology to clean hospital rooms and better protect patients against potentially deadly infections. Southern Ocean Medical Center uses the Helios® ultraviolet disinfection system from Surfacide, LLC. The system uses three portable towers to emit powerful, yet safe UV-C energy that is effective against bacteria, spores, and viruses, including “superbugs.”

In addition to using traditional cleaning methods, Southern Ocean Medical Center invested in the Surfacide UV-C technology to combat healthcare-associated infections. UV-C energy has been used for decades to kill organisms in water supplies and other applications where bacteria may be present. Now it is being used to kill organisms on hard surfaces found in hospitals including bed rails, TV remotes, patient tray tables, guest chairs, countertops, and bathrooms. “It’s no longer enough to rely just on approaches such as antibiotics and manual disinfection,” said Linda Broderick, director of Environmental Services and Transport, Southern Ocean Medical Center. “With this industry-leading technology, we can truly say we are going the extra mile to protect both our patients, visitors and team members.”

“Protecting patients against infection has always been a high priority for us,” said Regina Foley, Ph.D., MBA, RN, chief operations officer of Southern Ocean Medical Center. “This technology provides an extra layer of protection for both patients and team members, which is especially important today The 10-to-30 minute process is performed because we need to take every step available to guard against infection from antibiotic- by the Surfacide system in a closed room, after resistant organisms and other infectious an environmental service cleaning professional has manually cleaned the area and wiped down agents.” According to the Centers for Disease surfaces. Miele was a four-year starter and a Class A South All-Division selection last year.

X -FACTOR:

Quarterback Play Head coach Chuck Donohue Sr. likes Southern’s collection of running backs and is bullish on the group of offensive linemen to deliver a power rushing attack. Whether it’s Carmen Deo or Cole Robinson at quarterback, the Rams will benefit greatly from a passer who can manage the offense, move the chains, take care of the ball and play within the system.

iMPACT NEWCOMER: Josh Echandia, Sr., OL/DL Echandia will start at left guard and is also part of a deep rotation along the defensive line.

PIVOTAL GAME: Sept. 7 vs. Jackson Mem. After playing in Week 0 the last two years the Rams got their wish and were moved off playing opening weekend. They desperately want to start the season with a win, and to do so will have to take down a Jackson team that looks to be the division favorite.

LIAM ANDERSON (70)

“We were filling holes all season, and the game where we were the healthiest we ended up losing two kids for the year,” Donohue said. “Against Atlantic City we played four defensive backs that had maybe one or two starts between the four of them because everybody was hurt. We had some kids who didn’t play how we thought they would and we were just never the same team week by week. It was just one of those years.” This year’s seniors also admitted last year’s team wasn’t as cohesive as it needed to be. A big focus this offseason was getting everybody on the same page and working toward a common goal. “Last year I think we had a bunch of individuals who just wanted to make big plays, so just playing as a team was the main thing we’ve worked on in the offseason,” said senior running back/linebacker Joe Guglielmo. “If we play as a team, play hard, play fast, we’ll be alright.” From an X and O standpoint, Southern will be turning back the clock with both its offensive and defensive schemes to regain its identity of physical play. Offensively, Southern will ditch the Delaware Wing-T it used last season and go with a multiple offense that will feature spread, I-formation and pro-style sets. “Using more spread this year and moving back to the 'I' we used to run, I feel like it gives the running backs more of a chance to see the play develop,” Guglielmo said. “Freshman year we didn’t run the Wing-T so we’re still pretty familiar with the 'I' and split formations,” said senior running back/linebacker Luke Galan. “I think it will make it harder to game plan against us.” Senior Carmen Deo, who started toward the end of last season, and junior Cole Robinson have both been working at quarterback and battling for the starting position. In five games last season, Deo threw for 306

yards and three touchdowns. Guglielmo will start the season at fullback until senior Pat Scully is fully recovered from a shoulder injury suffered last season. Guglielmo will then shift to tailback where last season he ran for 432 yards and six touchdowns on just 56 carries. Seniors Rob Gunnell, Thomas Barnett and Galan will also see time in the backfield. The Rams will frequently use double tight end sets with a four-man rotation of seniors Kevin Lanahan, J.T. Cornelius (6-4, 215), Connor Dombecki and 6-foot-4, 220-pound sophomore Jay Silva. Senior Zach Hem returns as a starting wide receiver and will be joined by seniors Schneider Juste, Matt Caporrino and Nick Sinatra. The offensive line returns only one starter but is a unit Donohue envisions being a strength of the team. Senior Liam Anderson (6-4, 260) returns as the left tackle with senior Josh Echandia at left guard and junior Colby Saxton at right tackle. The center will be either senior Noah Westpy or junior Sebastian Cervetto. The right guard spot is between Cervetto and junior Nick Velardi. Junior Jayden Smith is also in the mix for playing time at tackle. “I think we’re taking advantage of a faster line,” Anderson said. “We don’t have many big guys – I’m probably the biggest one – so we’re taking advantage of having athleticism.” “I really think our strength is going to be both lines, as crazy as that sounds,” Donohue said. “Their mental state is very good and the fact we can go double tight (ends) will give us a really good advantage and help stop pressure from the edge.” Southern ran a 50 front defense last season and will move to a 4-4 this year. The Rams will use a deep

Juste, Lanahan, Dombecki and Silva will rotate at defensive end. Guglielmo played significant snaps at inside linebacker last season and will start there this year. Cervetto moves from the defensive line to inside linebacker while senior Trevor Gouveia has also been working in. Barnett and sophomore Hank Gallacher also in the mix. Galan started at safety last season and slides down to outside linebacker along with Gunnell and junior Christian Torres. Senior Dupreme Holland is a returning starter at cornerback with Sinatra and Caporrino working at the other cornerback spot. Hem returns as the safety with Robinson backing him up. “The 4-4 helps us play man against teams in the spread,” Galan said. “I like the 4-4 better. I’m in the alley this year not at safety and everything just feels more natural. I think it’s a good look for us.” “Hem and Galan can get people lined up and handle adjustments, and they communicate well,” Donohue said. “They’re very smart and are guys who take a lot of pressure off other players. They’re comfortable doing it and it doesn’t affect their play.” Hem will handle both the kicking and punting duties on special teams. Southern will play in the Constitution Division this year with Jackson Memorial, Wall, Marlboro, Lakewood and Lacey. They’ll open the season against the longtime Class A South rival Jaguars. “We’ve been playing Jackson our whole lives going back to AYF, so we know the kids we’re playing against,” Galan said. “They’re tough, but we’ll be ready. Obviously we’ll be amped up for the game and hopefully we can pull through.”

LOW HOUSING INVENTORY IN SOUTHERN OCEAN COUNTY IS GREAT FOR SELLERS Quicker Sales

We are sure you have noticed the lack of real estate signs right now in the local area. Why? Homes have been selling faster than in previous years, but we can tell you inventory remains low. What does that mean for a seller?

To Our Visa Gift Card Raffle Winners!

Homes, on an average, are selling faster, because of the low inventory. Less houses to choose from, so your home can sell faster Qualified Buyers

Less Competition Since less homes are on the market, there aren’t as many choices for buyers. This causes more buyers to see your home. The more buyers, the better chance of selling your home. Higher Prices

Jo Trivino

Since there aren’t as many homes out there for buyers to choose from, we are seeing prices slowly rise. Buyers are willing to pay more money for a home, when they know there aren’t many other options out there for them.

Walter Boright

There are plenty of qualified buyers out there. Baby boomers are looking to downsize, while at the same time, Millennials are reaching prime home buying age. Many buyers are offering larger down payments and some are making offers over asking price. So, if you are thinking of selling your home, now may be a good time. FORD IS RAFFLING A ONE-OF-A-KIND KONA BLUE MUSTANG BULLITT TO HELP FIND A CURE FOR JUVENILE DIABETES DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 17, 2018 – Ford is turning its iconic Dark Highland Green Mustang Bullitt Kona Blue to help benefit Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and one lucky raffle participant will drive home in this one-of-a-kind Mustang. Ford is revealing the Kona Blue Mustang Bullitt today at the 2018 Woodward Dream Cruise, where Ford and JDRF start selling up to 60,000 raffle tickets at $10 each. The raffle ends Nov. 9. A winner will be selected Nov. 13. The JDRF Mustang Bullitt comes with unique gray wheels, and its Kona Blue exterior is carried inside with blue cabin stitching. It features the 2019 Mustang Bullitt’s high-performance add-ons – including the performancetuned 5.0-liter V8 churning out 480 horsepower for a top-end speed of 163 mph. And like the original one-of-a-kind 1968 Mustang fastback from the classic thriller “Bullitt,” which also is making an appearance at the Woodward Dream Cruise, the newest model features minimal badging, a blacked-out grille and special white cue ball shifter. The JDRF Kona Blue Mustang Bullitt will be on display starting at 2 p.m. today at the Ford Media Club House at Kruse and Muer, 28028 Woodward Ave., in Royal Oak. It also will be on display Saturday at Mustang Alley, at the intersection of 9 Mile and Woodward Avenue in Ferndale. JDRF raffle tickets are available for purchase at both locations. Raffle tickets also are available online at www.onecause.com/jdrfbullitt until Nov. 8; online orders end Nov. 9.

NEW 2019 FORD GT HERITAGE EDITION HONORS MOST FAMOUS PAINT SCHEME IN MOTORSPORTS DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 24, 2018 – The new 2019 Ford GT Heritage Edition honors the legendary American Gulf Oilsponsored Ford GT40 by featuring the most famous paint scheme in motorsports – plus a set of additional exclusive touches. “Many view the Gulf Oil paint scheme as the most famous in motorsports,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford president, global operations. “The 1968 GT40 quickly became a global sensation after beating its European competitors on the track four times in a row, and in honor of the 50th anniversary of its win, we’re paying fresh tribute to the original with a new heritage limited edition.” Known among racing enthusiasts as chassis No. 1075, the 1968 GT was one of just a few individual cars to achieve repeat victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. For the first time, an optional package provides exposed carbon fiber accents for both the interior and exterior of the Ford GT Heritage Edition. For 2019, the package features the No. 9 graphics on the hood and doors, as well as a ghosted image on the interior door panels. For 2020, No. 6 honors the same car that went on to win Le Mans in 1969 with a different number. The Heritage Edition features exposed carbon fiber A-pillars and sports unique 20-inch one-piece forged aluminum wheels in high-gloss dark stainless with black lug nuts. Orange calipers and silver rearview mirror caps complete the look.

Ebony Alcantara wraps the seats, instrument panel, pillars, headliner and steering wheel. Contrasting blue and orange stitching accentuates the seats and steering wheel, with a new seat embossment inspired by the original 1968 Le Mans-winning car as well as clear and polished anodized paddle shifters. High-gloss dark stainless appliqués accent the instrument panel, door register bezels and x-brace to round out the interior. Much like previous heritage models, the Ford GT Heritage Edition features a unique serialized identification plate, plus exposed matte carbon fiber door sills, air register pods and center console. “We are delighted to partner with Ford to help the Gulf-themed Heritage Edition Ford GT become reality. The Ford Marque has played a major role in creating Gulf ’s place in motoring and motorsporting legend and the same is true in reverse,” enthused MD of Gulf Oil Lubricants India Ltd, Ravi Chawla. “Every Gulf outright victory at Le Mans has been Ford-powered and of course Gulf Ford GT40s took the latter two wins of Ford’s four consecutive victories at Le Mans from 1966-1969. What could be more fitting than both brands coming together to produce this fantastic motor car – the modern spiritual successor to the amazing Gulf-Ford GT40s that took Le Mans and World Championship honors.”

Coating 1/3 cup granulated sugar 1 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter 18 doughnut wells (3 6-hole pans. I only have 2 so I had to bake the 3rd batch after the first two finished). • In a mixing bowl whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger for 20 seconds, set aside. In a separate large mixing bowl, whisk together granulated sugar and brown sugar until well combined (break up clumps of brown sugar with fingertips as necessary. You don’t want any clumps). Add canola oil, eggs, pumpkin puree and vanilla extract and using an electric hand mixer, blend until mixture is well blended. Add dry ingredients to pumpkin mixture and mix with electric mixer until well combined. Spoon or pipe batter into doughnut wells, filling each about 3/4 full (a scant 1/4 cup in each). • Bake in preheated oven until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean, 13 - 16 minutes. Cool doughnuts slightly. Meanwhile in a large resealable bag shake together 1/3 cup sugar and 1 1/4 tsp cinnamon until well combined. Add one warm doughnut to bag at a time, seal and shake with sugar mixture to coat. Place on wire rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container.

NISSAN’S “HEISMAN HOUSE” CAMPAIGN ENTERS EIGHTH YEAR WITH A STAR-STUDDED LINEUP NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma, 2017), Bo Jackson (Auburn, 1985) and Gino Torretta (Miami, 1992) are the three newest recruits to the 2018 Nissan Heisman House, a fictional fraternity that provides fans a glimpse of what it might be like if the winners of college football’s highest individual honor lived together under one roof. Now in its eighth year, the 2018 Nissan Heisman House campaign features 10 Heisman Trophy winners in a series of TV spots airing on ESPN beginning Aug. 30 and running throughout the college football season. The season’s opening spot, “Calling All Heismans,” premieres tonight during the college football season opener, Purdue vs. Northwestern, 8:00 p.m. EDT on ESPN. “The Heisman House campaign has proven to be a tremendous opportunity for Nissan to creatively feature our robust vehicle lineup and innovative technology in front of the massive audience that is college football fans,” said Jeremy Tucker, vice president, marketing communications and media, Nissan North America, Inc. “This year, with a strong ad focus on Nissan Intelligent Mobility and our TITAN pickup – featuring America’s Best Truck Warranty1 – we’re taking the campaign to new heights with one of our most star-studded casts ever.”

exclusive Heisman Trophy Award Ceremony in New York on Dec. 8 – the only way in which to do so. Fans also can enter to win a customized Nissan TITAN. Last year, nearly 1-million consumers used the configurator on NissanUSA. com to customize a TITAN in their favorite school colors. As in previous years, the Nissan Heisman House Tour, featuring a simulated Heisman House, will travel to different college campuses throughout the U.S. The Tour provides fans an opportunity to enjoy the Heisman House living room, take photos with the trophy, and meet Heisman Trophy winners as well as ESPN on-air talent.

Returning Heisman House members are Herschel Walker (Georgia, 1982), Mike Rozier (Nebraska, 1983), Barry Sanders (Oklahoma State, 1988), Charles Woodson (Michigan, 1997), Tim Tebow (Florida, 2007), Marcus Mariota (Oregon, 2014) and Derrick Henry (Alabama, 2015). This year’s campaign includes seven 45-second spots and five 15-second spots featuring the all-new 2019 Nissan Altima, GT-R, all-new Kicks, Rogue and Nissan TITAN. Nissan Intelligent Mobility is also a major focus of this year’s campaign. Highlights include: Calling All Heismans (45 seconds, to debut on Aug. 30): Charles Woodson leads the charge in “Calling All Heismans” to this year’s campaign. Baker Mayfield Sandwich (15 seconds, to debut in Sept.): Baker Mayfield plants a flag to claim his food in the Heisman House kitchen. BOard Games (15 seconds, to debut in Oct.): Bo Jackson’s all-around skills are put to the test in the world of board games. Is there any game he can’t master? Something for Everyone: GIFs, fan votes, giveaways and the Heisman Mobile Tour New this season, animated GIFs of each Heisman winner have been created to be easily shared socially and via text message. Fans can download them at NissanHeismanHouse.com. For the 12th straight year, Nissan will provide college football fans the opportunity to vote for their favorite Heisman Trophy candidates. Nissan’s fan vote – the voice of the public – is cast along with other Heisman voters from sports journalists and previous Heisman winners. This year, fans can vote through Twitter or at NissanHeismanHouse.com via their mobile devices. “The fan vote is something Nissan is particularly proud of because it gives fans a voice in a space that otherwise is completely closed to the public,” added Tucker. “And via this vote, fans have proven to know their college football – the fan vote winner has gone on to win the Heisman Trophy in 10 of the 11 years of its existence.” Nissan also announced two sweepstakes (click here for official rules) to complement the 2018 Heisman House campaign, including one that offers a chance for a member of the public to win two tickets to attend the

Nissan invests $170 million in U.S. assembly plants to build all-new Altima SMYRNA, Tenn. – Nissan North America has announced a $170 million investment in its Smyrna, Tennessee and Canton, Mississippi assembly plants to support production of the 2019 Altima. The announcement came as the company celebrated the start of production of the sixth-generation sedan at its Smyrna facility. With this investment, Nissan has invested nearly $12 billion across its U.S. manufacturing footprint. “Nissan’s continued investment in our manufacturing facilities underpins our commitment to building top-quality vehicles in the U.S., as well as our valued workforce and the communities where we do business,” said Heath Holtz, senior vice president, Manufacturing, Supply Chain Management and Purchasing, Nissan North America, Inc. Nissan’s investment was used to upgrade Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant and Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant with the latest manufacturing technology. Upgrades included: State-of-the-art laser brazing system in the body shop that gives the flexibility to weld the vehicles’ sleek trunk lid. THE 2019 NAUTILUS

BRINGING SLEEK LUXURY, SMOOTH POWER TO MIDSIZE SUVS DEARBORN, Mich., – Nautilus, Lincoln’s newest entry to the popular midsize luxury SUV market, debuts with a new turbocharged engine lineup and a standard suite of advanced technologies offering the driver assistance from the front, rear and sides. Nautilus joins the new MKC, the elegant Continental, new Navigator and stylish MKZ for a lineup of vehicles instantly recognizable as Lincoln.

2019 LINCOLN AVIATOR

Set to Fly

Available powertrains will be a TwinTurbo V6 or Plug-in Hybrid Keyless remote via a smartphone app keyfob eliminated New Lincoln Co-Pilot 360 - a menu of driver-assist features

The relationship of aeronautical design to earthbound vehicles may seem remote, but aircraft have been an inspiration to automotive stylists in the past and the 2019 Lincoln Aviator is the latest example. According to Lincoln Design Director David Woodhouse, the way the Aviator’s shape tapers toward the rear creates “a distinct aerofoil analogy.” Displayed at the New York show, aircraft-style instruments and a Flight Blue finish enhances the Aviator’s claim to aeronautical cues. Similarities between SUVs and fighter jets notwithstanding, the Aviator does promise to bring plenty of power to bear when it goes on sale sometime in 2019. When it arrives, the new Lincoln will be available with two powertrain options—a potent twinturbo V6, and a plug-in hybrid system augmenting the turbo engine’s output. Lincoln refrained from any specifics about the powertrain. The V6 is an educated guess, the probability is the 450-horsepower twin-turbo V6 employed in the Lincoln Navigator. Also likely is the Navigator’s 10-speed automatic transmission. Also: Check out the latest news from the New York Auto Show The Aviator represents the first time the company has employed a twin-turbo engine with a plug-in hybrid system. While max output numbers remain to be seen, Lincoln characterizes the combo as its “quietest, smoothest, most powerful drive yet,” and “mightier than many supercars.” Dimensions, and how much structure the Aviator will share with Lincoln’s big boy Navigator figure as another waitand-see but the company does stipulate to three-row seating and a rear-drive, body-

on-frame chassis. This suggests a vehicle of substantial size and bodes well for the upcoming redesign of Ford’s Explorer. Goodbye keyfob Lincoln is a little more forthcoming about Aviator’s comfort and convenience features. For example, the Aviator will take keyless remote unlocking and starting to a new level by eliminating the keyfob from the equation. Owners will be able to perform those functions with their smartphones. A forward-looking camera will be linked to the Aviator’s automatic damping system, adjusting the suspension in anticipation of changes in the road surface just ahead. Lincoln calls it Suspension Preview Technology, a first for the company. Still another first: Lincoln Co-Pilot 360, a menu of driver-assist features that includes auto emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot information system, lane keeping assist, automatic high beam, rear view camera, and rear cross traffic alert. A new optional driver-assist feature—Reverse Brake Assist, capable of stopping the Aviator when the driver fails to respond to an unseen object while backing up. Also: Get your first look at the new and redesigned cars of 2019 Beyond that, the Aviator will be equipped with the latest SYNC system, which includes a variety of “considerate prompts” to the driver. Example: when the low fuel light illuminates, the big center dash touch screen responds with nav system information on the nearest gas stations. Other connectivity standard features: on-board Wi-Fi, wireless phone charging, and orchestral audio. Naturally, the cabin appointments will be posh in the standard Aviator, even more so in the Black Label edition. While it may be difficult to see aircraft influence in Lincoln’s new SUV, the luxury quotient is unmistakable. www.kbb.com

The 2019 Nautilus introduces Lincoln Co-Pilot360™, which bundles many popular driver-assist features that were previously available only as separate options and makes them standard. It’s incorporated with an array of sophisticated technologies designed to inspire driver confidence.

Lincoln Nautilus moves to an all-new turbocharged engine lineup for 2019, with smooth power delivered through three advanced technologies – turbocharging, direct injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing. A powerful 2.7-liter turbocharged engine delivers 335 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque, while the standard 250-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo is efficient* and smooth in operation. Both engines include standard Auto StartStop capability, plus a new eight-speed automatic transmission.

Technology for greater confidence, connectivity Lincoln Co-Pilot360 uses cameras and radar to enhance a driver’s capabilities – easing stress and making each journey virtually effortless. Technologies like Blind Spot Information System, which uses radar to alert drivers of approaching vehicles entering their blind spot by flashing an indicator light, and crosstraffic alert, warning drivers of traffic behind when backing out of a parking spot or driveway, are included. Other technologies include pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, auto high beams, a lane-keeping system and a rearview camera. Nautilus drivers stay connected through a standard embedded 4G modem with WiFi hotspot capability, while an available concealed wireless charging pad for compatible smartphones ends the hassle of tangled cords. The large center touch screen serves as a portal to standard SYNC® 3 with both Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ compatibility, enabling clients to manage audio, phone and navigation, including WAZE. Steering wheel-mounted controls are also available for some of these functions. “I commute for more than an hour every day and I want to feel relaxed and enjoy that time behind the wheel,” says Megan McKenzie, SUV marketing manager, The Lincoln Motor Company. “The technology that we offer in our vehicles allows drivers to feel more confident and takes the stress out of so many situations.” Turbocharging and a new transmission bring smooth power

The new Nautilus brings distinctive form with its function. Its exterior aligns with the rest of the Lincoln lineup, presenting a bold signature grille highlighted by a unique Lincoln star mesh design. The sleek shape of the midsize SUV showcases a harmonious aesthetic along with aerodynamic efficiency, and a new wheel selection adds another layer of personal style. Upon approach, the new Nautilus welcomes clients with signature Lincoln lighting – first from the outside, then from within. The spacious cabin is designed to be quiet and comfortable, serving as a sanctuary from the outside world. Acoustic side glass reduces wind noise for rear passengers, while advanced engineering solutions decrease sound from the road. The sleek console for Nautilus provides an airy ambience, while a sophisticated push-button gear shift integrates seamlessly with classic knobs and buttons. A leather-wrapped, hand-stitched steering wheel is mounted ahead of a 12.3-inch fully configurable digital instrument cluster that displays driver information crisply and clearly. media.lincoln.com

2018 HYUNDAI ELANTRA ECO, SONATA HYBRID, AND IONIQ NAMED “TOP COMMUTER CARS” FROM CARGURUS FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Aug. 30, 2018 – The 2018 Elantra Eco, Sonata Hybrid, and Ioniq are listed as “Top Commuter Cars” (Under $35K category) in a new study from CarGurus. The newly released “Top Cars For Your Commute” study weighs factors such as commuting efficiency, mileage variation, hilliness, and weather of 84 different metro regions and matches them with cars that excel in vehicle efficiency, horsepower, comfort, and even alternative-fuel options that thrive in each commute. Elantra Eco was named the “Top Commuter Car” in 13 cities, while Ioniq was named a top choice in three, and Sonata Hybrid was deemed a top car for the unique conditions of New Orleans’ commute. “For those who regularly drive to and from work, commuting conditions should absolutely be a consideration when car shopping – they can make the difference between regret and enjoyment,” says Matt Smith, senior editor at CarGurus. “The Elantra Eco, Ioniq, and Sonata Hybrid all offer excellent fuel economy, quiet rides, and comfortable interiors, making them excellent commuting options.” CarGurus sourced data for its “Top Cars For Your Commute” recommendations by calculating average distance from home to work for commuters who work in 84 of the largest U.S. metro areas. The average distance was calculated from the Census Transportation Planning Products, while the travel and efficiency information was adapted from the Texas A&M Transportation Institute’s Urban Mobility Scorecard. CarGurus grouped metro

areas with similar characteristics to form its commuting clusters for use in the study, and then its editorial team chose cars with features that fit each group, including one option above a $35,000 MSRP and one below. The survey fielded more than 1,800 people ages 18+ who identified as employed individuals or students. “This recognition by CarGurus highlights Hyundai’s dedication to the driving experience, ensuring that customers are as comfortable and happy as possible on their daily commutes,” says Scott Margason, director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Whether it’s through eco-friendly technologies or cutting-edge infotainment features, Hyundai is committed to satisfying customers’ needs in their everyday lives.”

THE 2018 HYUNDAI KONA EARNS A TOP SAFETY PICK+ RATING FROM THE IIHS FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Aug. 24, 2018 – In one of the industry’s most stringent crash tests, the 2018 Hyundai Kona was named a TOP SAFETY PICK+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Kona scored a good rating for occupant protection in the passenger-side small overlap front crash test and when equipped with its newly available good-rated LED headlights, qualified for the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award. The Kona also earned good ratings in the Institute’s five other crashworthiness evaluations and a superior rating for its optional front crash prevention system, which avoided collisions in 12- and 25-mph IIHS track tests. “Hyundai is honored to receive the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award from IIHS,” said Dr. MinSup Lee, vice president, Hyundai America Technical Center. “Having our engineering recognized by one of the leading indicators of vehicle safety inspires us to continue making advancements through passive and active safety integration.” “Safety is one of the most important markers for every vehicle Hyundai develops and we are proud of our entire engineering team, who helped Kona achieve the highest possible rating from the IIHS,” said Scott Margason, director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Hyundai continues to prioritize making the most advanced safety features available. The Kona is a great example of the stylish, fun-to-drive, affordable and safe vehicles you can find in the Hyundai lineup.” According to IIHS, models that earn TOP SAFETY PICK honors are the best vehicle choices for safety within their size categories. Kona’s award adds to the list of eight new Hyundai models that are rated TOP SAFETY PICK+ or TOP SAFETY PICK when equipped

To earn the 2018 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests and an acceptable or good rating in the passenger-side small overlap front test. Qualifiers also need an available front crash prevention system that earns an advanced or superior rating and available goodrated headlights.

with front crash prevention and specific headlights, tied for the second most in the industry. The 2018 Elantra (built after Dec. 2017), Sonata (built after Sept. 2017), Santa Fe and the Santa Fe Sport (built after June 2017) all earned the organization’s highest rating, while the Elantra GT, Ioniq Hybrid and Tucson received a TOP SAFETY PICK rating. IIHS crash test results for the all-new 2019 Santa Fe will be released next month. This award is for Konas built after May 2018, as Hyundai made changes to the Kona’s available LED projector headlights to minimize glare for oncoming drivers. Following the change, the LED headlights, which are available on the Limited and Ultimate trim lines, earned a good rating. The Ultimate trim’s headlights also feature high-beam assist, a feature that automatically switches between high beams and low beams depending on the presence of other vehicles in the path of the lights.

Hyundai’s compact SUV Kona appeals to consumers with active lifestyles of all kinds and comes equipped with the latest safety technologies. Kona offers optional advanced active safety features, including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), which uses the car’s front-facing camera and radar to help detect an imminent collision and avoid impact or minimize damage by braking autonomously. Three additional optional systems also utilize the front-view camera to boost safety and convenience: Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), High Beam Assist (HBA) and Driver Attention Warning (DAW). By sensing road markings, Lane Keeping Assist helps to prevent accidental lane departure by automatically steering the car, if required, while the Driver Attention Warning system monitors a spectrum of driver-related characteristics to help detect driver fatigue or careless driving. Kona’s radar systems also assist with the Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW) to help detect approaching vehicles that may be obscured from view during highway driving. The Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning (RCCW) helps detect when another vehicle may have entered the car’s rearward path, such as backing out of a parking spot, by providing a driver alert.
