INTERFAITH EARNS CAUSEWAY’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY GRANT By: Kaitlyn Strohmeier

In Celebration of The Causeway Family of Dealerships 50th anniversary, we will be embarking on a yearlong campaign - Causeway’s 50 Golden Acts of Good - to help our neighbors and positively impact Ocean County. Anchoring this campaign will be a Grant Giveaway program, through which Causeway will award a $10,000 grant to one Ocean County nonprofit every month, from January through November of 2019, culminating next December with the award of a new Ford Connect Van. We are proud to announce our January $10,000 grant winner, Interfaith Hospitality Network of Ocean County, Inc. An affiliate of Family Promise. Did you know? “Ocean County’s homeless population rose 38 percent from 2017 to 2018 — far out-pacing the 9 percent increase throughout New Jersey, according to an annual survey by the federal government.” (app.com) Interfaith is one of the few nonprofit organizations located in New Jersey whose main goal is to help the homeless. I got to meet with Patty Cash, the Executive Director at Interfaith. Patty is one of the kindest, caring and selfless people I have ever met. During the time spent with Patty, she educated me on the nonprofit and why they are so important. I even got a tour of the Day Center, which is where the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Ocean County (IHNOC) offices are located. Patty Cash started as a volunteer 23 years ago for “Hands for All” which is a division of Homes for All, a non-profit affordable housing developer. While Patty was volunteering, one of the projects she was working on was for Interfaith. At that time she had no idea that the office she had helped build was later going to become her office for Interfaith. She volunteered for a year and a half at Interfaith before becoming the Executive Director. Interfaith has been located at the house on Lexington Avenue in Toms River for two years which is owned by St. Joseph’s R.C. Church. The church’s own pastor, Father Scott, donated the space and he lives next door.

Causeway presenting the grant award to Executive Director of Interfaith, Patty Cash. (From left to right) - Joe Stroffolino, David Wintrode Jr., David Wintrode Sr., and Patty Cash Interfaith has over 1,000 volunteers. They help families with things such as: finding jobs, balancing their finances, nutrition, mentoring, providing rides to and from school, making dinner, keeping the house maintained, spending time with the children and the list goes on. Over the past 22 years there has always been a meal on the table for these families thanks to volunteers! Not only are the volunteers helping the families in need, these families are teaching the volunteers so much without even knowing it. For example, a volunteer started a nutrition program which includes growing their own garden and how to cook healthy on a budget. It is facilitated by women who have come through the program to support women who are in program and together - they named it empower.

room to curl up and sob. She said she had no place else she could weep without her son hearing. So much thanks go out to these volunteers that have been creating a loving space for families just like hers to heal.” Read up on Interfaith below! Who is Interfaith? “Our Mission”- Interfaith Hospitality Network of Ocean County is a non-profit, interfaith ministry committed to providing shelter, meals and assistance to homeless families. Our welltrained volunteers reach out with our compassion and acceptance, providing help, hope and a safe haven for our guests while they seek permanent employment and affordable housing. We increase community awareness and advocate responsible solutions to homelessness. How does IHNOC carry out this mission?

The beautiful backyard of the Day Center, where kids get to play with volunteers and family. In the summer they have a beautiful garden where the grow their own vegetables!

The Program mobilizes existing community resources: churches and synagogues for overnight lodging, congregations for volunteers, and a church owned house for the day center and network office. Each host congregation furnishes overnight lodging and meals for three to five families for one week each two to three months on a rotating schedule. The religious communities provide a safe, peaceful and welcoming atmosphere for the guest in need. We provide financial, career, individual and family counseling through professional volunteers. Referrals from social service agencies and the community are accepted. Who administers the program? In the summer of 1995 concerned individuals began meeting and a formal Board of Trustees was formed in the Fall of 1996. The Board of Trustees oversees a full-time Network Director and volunteer Coordinators from each Church. We are part of a National Program with 171 Networks operating in 41 states. Who are the homeless?

The kitchen of the Day Center, where families and volunteers spend time together cooking meals.

Today’s homeless population includes a growing number of two parent families, one parent families, working people, victims of domestic violence, and many others. Over half of the homeless are women and children, with families being the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. A major illness, loss of job, domestic violence or other forces can thrust these working families into homelessness. How are guest accepted into the program? All guests are screened by our Director. A background check is performed and an agreement of guidelines is signed before anyone is accepted into the program.

Why are volunteers important?

The cozy living room with a beautiful fireplace for families to enjoy. During the time I spent with Patty, she told me a touching story that one of Interfaith’s coordinators had shared with her: “A mother would walk through the door of the host site with her son and go straight to her room and leave her son with the volunteers. One of the coordinators was a retired teacher and would help him with his homework, who played games and spent time with the boy. I didn’t understand why the mom would do that everyday when they were there. The second time the family was back at the church, the mother of that child immediately approached the coordinator and thanked her and the volunteers. She said her first time at the church she was so depressed and overwhelmed that all she could do was walk in the building and go to her

The volunteers are the heart and soul of the network and without them it would not exist. Beyond providing meals, staying overnight and other services essential to the program, volunteers offer compassionate assistance to those who have suffered the loss of their home. They do simple, but immeasurable things. They listen to guests who have no one to talk to. They treat the guest with respect and respond to them with compassion. They can be the source of hope. They can also help the families search for housing or employment opportunities. How did Interfaith begin? On May 18th IHNOC will mark its 22nd year of serving homeless families of Ocean County. During the spring of 1995, the National IHN met individually with several area clergy to explain the IHN program. This resulted in a general meeting of interested people on July 19, 1995. At that gathering the Director of Ocean County Board of Social Services confirmed the need for such a program, stating there were 120 to 150 families housed in motels, there were no homeless shelters continued on page 4

NHTSA TIPS FOR TRAVELING SAFELY IN WINTER

WINTER 2018

3

SPORTS BEAT Girl’s Track

Driving safely in winter weather can be a challenge for even the most experienced driver. It’s easy to forget after months of mild conditions that snow and ice demand careful driving and special preparation for your vehicle. But when 17 percent of all vehicle crashes occur during winter conditions* it’s clear that we could all use a refresher when it comes to making our way through a winter wonderland. Here are some tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, (NHTSA). Ready Your Vehicle

Driving safely begins before you even get on the road. Regular tune-ups and maintenance are the starting point for safe driving year-round. In winter, pay special attention to your vehicle’s battery, wipers, coolant, tires and other systems that can take a beating when the temperature drops. If you’re using snow tires, have them installed before the snow begins to fall. When you know your vehicle is ready for the road, clear your car of snow, ice or dirt from the windows, forward sensors, headlights, tail lights and backup camera. Ready Yourself Drive slowly. It’s harder to control or stop your vehicle on a slick or snow-covered road. Increase your following distance enough so that you’ll have plenty of time to stop for vehicles ahead of you. Also remember that every vehicle handles differently; this is particularly true when driving on wet, icy, or snowy roads. Take the time to learn how it handles under winter weather driving conditions. Before heading out, know the weather and traffic conditions, and plan your route accordingly. Give yourself more time to get where you’re going because you’ll be driving more slowly in inclement weather. Ready for an Emergency Even if you and your vehicle are prepared, crashes happen.

Vehicles break down. Any of us can get caught out in the elements and help might not be just around the corner. Make sure your vehicle is stocked to help get you out of trouble or to keep you safe until help arrives. Keep blankets, flashlights, jumper cables, and flares or emergency lights in your vehicle. Even if you don’t need them, they can be used to help someone else in need on the road. Winter driving demands special care; safe driving is a yearround habit. You and everyone in your vehicle should be wearing seat belts for every ride. Children should be in age- and size-appropriate child seats. Never drive after drinking. Never drive when distracted by an electronic device or anything else. Those are the essentials for safe driving, whatever the weather. More Winter Driving Tips There’s a lot that goes into preparing yourself and your vehicle for winter, so check out NHTSA’s Winter Driving Tips to ensure safe travels. www.nhtsa.org *Ten-year averages from 2005 to 2014 analyzed by Booz Allen Hamilton, based on NHTSA data.

Change one behavior at a time

However, it is important to remember that the New Year isn’t meant to serve as a catalyst for sweeping character changes. It is a time for people to reflect on their past year’s behavior and promise to make positive lifestyle changes. “Setting small, attainable goals throughout the year, instead of a singular, overwhelming goal on January 1 can help you reach whatever it is you strive for,” says psychologist Lynn Bufka, PhD. “Remember, it is not the extent of the change that matters, but rather the act of recognizing that lifestyle change is important and working toward it, one step at a time.”

Share your experiences with family and friends. Consider joining a support group to reach your goals, such as a workout class at your gym or a group of coworkers quitting smoking. Having someone to share your struggles and successes with makes your journey to a healthier lifestyle that much easier and less intimidating.

Start small Make resolutions that you think you can keep. If, for example, your aim is to exercise more frequently, schedule three or four days a week at the gym instead of seven. If you would like to eat healthier, try replacing dessert with something else you enjoy, like fruit or yogurt, instead of seeing your diet as a form of punishment.

Congrats Southern Regional Wrestling on a great showing at the Hunterdon Central Holiday Tournament on Thursday, December 27, 2018. Ben LoParo, JT Cornelius, John Stout, Nick O’Connell & Nick Pepe were all champions in their respective weight classes. Good Luck to the Rams in 2019. #RamPride

Girl’s Basketball

It can be daunting when your list of New Year’s Resolutions is as long as your holiday shopping list. In addition to the post-holiday slump, not being able to keep your resolutions by February, March or even late January may increase your anxiety. When your holiday decorations are packed up and stored away, the frustration of an unused gym membership or other reminders of failed resolutions can make the later winter months feel hopeless.

By making your resolutions realistic, there is a greater chance that you will keep them throughout the year, incorporating healthy behavior into your everyday life. APA offers these tips when thinking about a News Year’s resolution:

Safe Driving: Rain, Sleet, Snow or Otherwise

MAKING YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION STICK

Lose weight? Check. Start exercising? Check. Stop smoking? Check.

Congratulations Southern Regional Girls Winter Track team on winning the 2019 Ocean County Championship on Wednesday, January 9th. Congrats athletes and coaches. Good Luck the rest of the season. Great start in 2019 for the Rams! #RamPride

Unhealthy behaviors develop over the course of time. Thus, replacing unhealthy behaviors with healthy ones requires time. Don’t get overwhelmed and think that you have to reassess everything in your life. Instead, work toward changing one thing at a time. Talk about it

Don’t beat yourself up Perfection is unattainable. Remember that minor missteps when reaching your goals are completely normal and OK. Don’t give up completely because you ate a brownie and broke your diet, or skipped the gym for a week because you were busy. Everyone has ups and downs; resolve to recover from your mistakes and get back on track. Ask for support Accepting help from those who care about you and will listen strengthens your resilience and ability to manage stress caused by your resolution. If you feel overwhelmed or unable to meet your goals on your own, consider seeking professional help. Psychologists are uniquely trained to understand the connection between the mind and body. They can offer strategies as to how to adjust your goals so that they are attainable, as well as help you change unhealthy behaviors and address emotional issues. www.apa.org.

From page 1 in Ocean County and very limited resources to help. From that July meeting, a core group spearheaded by Father Ken Moroney, then the pastor of All Saints Episcopal Church in Lakewood, continued to meet on a regular basis for the next 18 months and worked towards establishing a network. The biggest job was recruitment of host congregations. IHNOC was formerly incorporated as a New Jersey nonprofit on July 24, 1996. The first Board of Trustees was formed in January 1997 with Msgr. Casimir Ladzinski, then pastor of St. Joseph, Toms River, as President. It was a very busy time, finding host sites, a day center, hiring the Director (Patty Cash who is still the Director), recruiting and training volunteers, purchasing beds and linens and working out the logistics of moving guests every Sunday. With 8 host congregations, IHNOC officially opened on Sunday May 18, 1997 with Immanuel Lutheran of Lakewood as our first host site. Both volunteers and guests were a bit anxious that first day but everything went smoothly. The other host sites that year were: Epiphany Catholic, Brick; St. Mary’s Catholic, Lakewood; Christ Episcopal, St. Joseph’s Catholic, 1st United Methodologist, Salvation Army and the Presbyterian Church, all of Toms River. All Saints Episcopal in Lakewood was the Day Center. Since that first year we have lost some host sites and gained some new ones and continue our mission to serve homeless families.

WINTER 2018

IN A CROWDED WORLD, FORD ECOSPORT CREATES ECOSPOTS – PARKING SPACES SUITED FOR THE MOST COMPACT SUV IN NORTH AMERICA

DETROIT, Dec. 18, 2018 – We circle the block, calculating whether our vehicle will squeeze into a curbside gap. Can I fit in there? I think I can fit in there. A car horn from behind begins honking.

The search, for some drivers, is over. Many of those spots, those frustratingly too-small spots, have a new name. Meet the EcoSpot, parking spaces for only the most-compact SUV in North America.

No. You can almost never fit in there. As population centers get denser, finding a convenient parallel parking space has become, at times, a grueling challenge.

Competing in a segment that prides itself on efficient use of space, the Ford EcoSport stands out. It measures only 161.3 inches in length, but thanks to innovative features like flip-and-fold second-row seats and a moveable cargo floor board that adjusts easily to any of three positions, EcoSport delivers parking convenience without sacrificing the precious cargo room that SUV drivers demand. Here’s how EcoSport measures up to some of its chief competitors:

According to a 2017 report from INRIX, a leader in connected car services and transportation analytics, drivers in New York City spend an average of 107 hours every year searching for a parking spot. In Los Angeles and San Francisco, they burn 85 hours and 83 hours, respectively. Nationwide, every driver spends an average of 17 hours a year searching for a parking spot.

EcoSport has more cargo area than a Mini Countryman, but is 8.5 inches shorter

EcoSport has more cargo area than a Buick Encore, but is more than 7 inches shorter EcoSport has more cargo area than a Mazda CX-3, but is 7 inches shorter

EcoSport has more cargo area than a Chevy Trax, but is nearly 6 inches shorter And in a world where parking is scarce – but EcoSpots are abundant – every inch counts.

FORD RELEASES 2019 TRENDS REPORT THAT EXPLORES SHIFTING BEHAVIORS AND THE POWER OF CHANGE NEW YORK, Dec. 14, 2018 – Selfdriving cars are a hot topic today, but if you had to choose would you rather your children ride in an autonomous vehicle or drive with a stranger? You may be surprised to learn that 67 percent of adults would opt for the self-driving car. That insight is one of many revealed in the 2019 Looking Further with Ford Trend Report, released today. The report takes a deep look into the drivers of behavioral change, specifically uncovering

the dynamic relationships consumers have with the shifting landscape of technology.

Others fear the impact of technology on our emotional wellbeing.

Change is not always easy – particularly when it is driven by forces outside of our control. In a global survey of 14 countries, Ford’s research revealed that 87 percent of adults believe technology is the biggest driver of change. And while 79 percent of adults maintain that technology is a force for good, there are large segments of the population that have significant concerns. Some are afraid of artificial intelligence.

Here are a few key insights from Ford’s 7th annual Trends Report:

Disco Truffles

87 percent agree that technology is the biggest driver of today’s change and almost 8 in 10 citizens believe that technology is a force for good. 45 percent of adults globally reported that they envy people who can disconnect from their devices. 7 out of 10 consumers agreed that we should have a mandatory timeout from our devices.

YIELDS:

Ford’s Trend Report serves as a blueprint for understanding how key patterns of consumer behavior around the globe are expected to influence consumers and corporations in 2019 and beyond.

Almost half of people around the world believe that fear drives change and 7 in 10 say that they are energized by change.

The Tech Divide – Technology has a profound impact on how we connect with and see the world – more than ever before. Yet, there’s an underlying tension between those who have access and believe it’s a force for good and those who don’t have access. At Ford, technology is used to help make mobility smarter, safer and more convenient for people around the world. The company is deliberate about the technology used, and educating consumers on how to use technology smartly, thoughtfully and in ways that add value to their lives. In some cities, the company leverages the work of the City Solutions team which works with cities to understand their physical and cultural infrastructure and find solutions to help residents move more freely.

of these “buzz moments” — the thrills that play a vital role in overall wellness — to better understand how to improve drivers’ experience and mindset behind the wheel. Reclaiming Control – In a world where control feels so out of grasp for many, consumers are looking for ways to reclaim agency over their lives where self-improvement is paramount. As part of Ford’s human-centered design process, empathy research is conducted to understand people’s needs and habits – including university professors, tri-athletes, and everyday citizens. The company uses this research to develop vehicles and technology, like Ford Co-Pilot 360™, which is designed to help relieve some of the burdensome tasks of driving and give the driver confidence in their vehicle’s ability to adapt and handle stressful road scenarios. Many Faces of Me – With social media playing such a large part in consumers’ lives, today many portray various personas– from who they are in real life to how they depict themselves online, which ultimately impacts what they buy, wear and drive, as well as their technology choices. Ford understands that a vehicle is a reflection of a driver’s sense of self and as such, the vehicles are designed to speak to an individual’s needs while reinforcing and projecting who they are. The all-new 2019 Ford Ranger gives drivers the maneuverability of a mid-size truck to commute to work in the city and also the ruggedness and capability to explore their adventurous side on the weekend.

Life’s Work – How we perceive work has changed with many global citizens now working to live, not living to work. Companies are responding in kind: with benefits, sabbaticals and extended leave being offered, as well as opportunities for mental enrichment and more. Ford believes that talent is strengthened when people are encouraged to experience the world around Digital Detox – Despite being tethered them and give back to the community. FORD TRENDS

From page 5 Eco-Momentum – While changing lifelong habits can be hard, consumers overwhelmingly agree that environmental progress will depend on changes in human behavior and many look for guidance on how and where to improve their environmental footprint. Sustainable practices are critical to the health of the environment and to Ford’s success. We’re also focused on reducing emissions from our vehicles by doing our share to deliver on CO2 reductions consistent with the Paris Climate Accord. We already charted our course for the future to invest in 16 fully electric vehicles within a global portfolio of 40 electrified vehicles through 2022.

Easy Street – The mobility journey isn’t as simple as going from point A to B, it’s about what we do with our time along the way. Americans spend more time in their cars than they receive vacation time so the ability to get things done while on the road could change the commute experience as we know it. Ford believes that self-driving vehicles will reduce society’s pain points and expand access to transportation and goods delivery. The company is working with companies to understand how goods delivery through the use of self-driving vehicles can be improved. An example of this is a pilot program Ford is conducting with Walmart and Postmates, exploring how self-driving vehicles can complement Walmart’s home delivery offerings.

2018 NISSAN KICKS FIRST DRIVE: KICKING ASS AND TAKING SALES By Scott Evans

it’s worth an extra month of eating ramen for the midgrade SV model. The 2018 Kicks SV picks up an upgraded infotainment system (still a 7.0-inch touchscreen) with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and satellite radio, automatic climate control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic monitoring, a cargo cover, remote engine starting, and alloy wheels for $20,665 all said and done.

Just about every week it seems an automaker announces or reveals a new vehicle or puts a new spin on an old vehicle that millennials will just love. Even the pitches that aren’t tone-deaf are usually met with the same eyerolling response: Many millennials are saddled with debt and working a job beneath their education because it’s all they could get. Given enough chances, it was only a matter of time before an automaker actually hit the target, and Nissan may have done it. Buying the base model of an entry-level car used to mean you couldn’t even get power windows or door locks, and it wasn’t that long ago Bluetooth and automatic headlights were restricted to pricier trim levels. Rear cameras only became standard this year because the government mandated it. Things are getting better for the value shopper in general as customers expect more from their vehicles, but the 2018 Nissan Kicks takes it a big step forward. The 2018 Kicks’ standard features read like a list of things you normally wish you could get as options on a base model. Automatic emergency braking and forward collision alert. Automatic headlights. Three USB ports

(more than some competitors offer, period, let alone on a base model). Tilting and telescoping steering wheel. Automatic up/down front windows. Keyless entry and push-button start. A 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth phone and streaming audio. All of that for $18,965. If you can scrape a few more pennies together, though,

Much has been made of the fact that many Americans now drive some form of light truck. Sales of SUVs, crossovers and pickups are closing in on 70 percent of U.S. new vehicle sales. Yes, we have become a nation of truck drivers. But that doesn’t mean that cars no longer matter. They do, accounting for 6 million units a year in sales in the United States, of which one-third are midsize cars. (That’s 2 million units a year for the math adverse.) This is why Nissan redesigned the Altima for 2019 with an all-new platform and two new engines with all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive. Given that the Subaru Legacy is the only other all-wheel drive midsize sedan, Nissan has a huge selling advantage in Northern climes. The $1,350 AWD option is available on all models, which include S, SR, SV, SL and Platinum trims. However, it’s only offered with the base engine, a direct injected 2.5-liter

current design language. While still aggressive, there’s a refinement to its appearance that makes it perfect for midsize sedan duty, dancing on the edge of mild and wild. It’s quite a sharp-looking ride. But is it enough to make a crossover shopper give up their ride for an Altima? Most likely not; it’s merely an improved version of what has come before. Nevertheless, the 2019 Nissan Altima offers an impressively upscale appearance and feature list at a popular price. That was true of the first Altima in 1993, which looked much like a shrunken Infiniti J30. Six generations on, the 2019 Altima is better in every way. It’s clearly Nissan’s ultimate Altima. Perhaps it should have been called the Altimate. www.boston.com.

New 2018 Nissan

KICKS SV four-cylinder rated at 188 horsepower. Replacing the previous Altima’s 270-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 engine on upper-level SR and Platinum models is the VCTurbo, the world’s first production variable compression turbocharged engine. The 248-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged engine has been under development for two decades. It’s trick? It continuously raises or lowers the pistons’ reach, changing from 8:1 for high performance to 14:1 for high fuel efficiency. But it’s only offered with front-wheel drive, not all-wheel drive. Both engines mate to a continuously variable automatic transmission. And it’s safe, thanks to standard Automatic Emergency Braking, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning and Intelligent Driver Alertness. A Safety Shield 360 package is optional and adds Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Rear Automatic Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and High Beam Assist. On my recent drive in Santa Barbara, Calif., Nissan provided SR and Platinum models for testing. Certainly, the new VC-T engine provides more thrills than its larger non-turbo sibling. Power off the line is strong, and care is needed to avoid squealing tires. The engine and transmission seem well matched, with the transmission doing its best impersonation of a conventional transmission under hard acceleration, and delivering a fun experience. However, it requires premium fuel while returning the lowest fuel economy of any Altima. In contrast, the base engine uses regular unleaded gasoline and returns better fuel economy. But power is merely adequate; it’s not nearly as entertaining. If you live in a hilly region, you’ll find the 2.5-liter challenged by inclines, especially with the added weight of all-wheel drive. Nevertheless, the transmission feels more linear than before, lacking the rubber banding typically found in CVTs. Regardless of model, comfort and refinement are this car’s hallmarks. It’s agile and provides impressive grip, and a well-mannered chassis. But it’s no sports sedan. The polished demeanor can best be seen in the interior, where a large eight-inch infotainment touchscreen anchors the sleek, contemporary instrument panel. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the chip set used operates quickly. And techies take note: this might be the only car to offer two USB and two USB-C ports. Cabin trim quality varies from trim to trim, with some evidence that accountants have been at work, but overall quality is satisfying for the price. The cabin itself is roomy both front and rear thanks to a two-inch longer wheelbase, an extra inch in width and overall length, although it’s one inch lower. It’s wrapped in the finest interpretation yet of Nissan’s

Unless you really want LED headlights and a surroundview camera system, skip past the $21,265 SR trim, as it’s mostly cosmetic, though it does add a few lines of software to the engine and chassis computers that are supposed to make it handle a little better. If you’re going to splurge anyway, beg, borrow, or steal the extra $1,000 and get the loaded SR with the Premium package. To the SR niceties it adds nice faux-leather seats with heaters up front, a security system, and a phenomenal Bose Personal Plus eight-speaker stereo. Let’s take a moment to talk about this stereo. You’re lucky if you can even get a “premium” stereo upgrade in a car that maxes out at $22,265 before accessories, and it usually just takes you from “it plays music” to “this sounds decent.” The Bose stereo in this Kicks, no joke, sounds better than the base stereo in a $180,000 Bentley Bentayga. Play an uncompressed audio file off your phone, and marvel at the clarity of the individual instruments and the breadth of the soundstage, then remind yourself this is a $22,000 car. Part of the trick is a pair of speakers in the driver’s headrest, which are there to manipulate the stage, not blow out your eardrums, though you can hear a difference if you turn your head all the way to the right or left. You can adjust the stereo to focus sound at the driver’s sear when you’re alone in the car, but personally, I preferred the panoramic setting and its recording-studio feel. Fitting all these features into this price point did require decisions on Nissan’s part, some tough and some curious. For example, rear parking sensors, a Rockford Fosgate subwoofer, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and ambient interior lighting are all either stand-alone accessories or a small accessories package rather than rolled into a trim level or larger package. The upshot here is you can buy exactly what matters to you. www.motortrend.com.

80TH ANNIVERSARY LINCOLN CONTINENTAL ARRIVES IN STYLE WITH ICONIC CENTER-OPENING DOORS

To complement its smooth, powerful drive, this special edition features Perfect Position seats that adjust 30 ways, plus Active Noise Control for a quiet interior. A Revel® Ultima Audio experience allows drivers to select one of three listening modes, including stereo, audience and onstage.

NEW YORK, Dec. 17, 2018 – “Notice the doors,” the vintage advertisement for the Lincoln Continental began. “And notice how they open. From the center, to make everyone’s entrances graceful.” With that, an enduring automotive design legend was born – the coach doors – or center-opening doors, which conveyed elegance and a touch of Hollywood glamour. Today, six decades later, Lincoln is bringing back a modern version of these iconic center-opening doors with the introduction of the Lincoln Continental 80th Anniversary Coach Door Edition. A limited run of just 80 units will be produced. The Continental Coach Door Edition arrives as Lincoln is riding a new wave of product momentum. Following the reveal of the all-new Lincoln Aviator at the Los Angeles Auto Show, this 80th Anniversary Continental celebrates the heritage of one of America’s most beloved luxury sedans. Glamour and allure Lincoln Continental began as a custom luxury vehicle hand-crafted by chief stylist Eugene T. Gregorie for Edsel Ford in 1939. Years later, the 1961 Continental introduced the unique center-opening doors and a chrome-accented upper shoulder line that established a signature look for Lincoln. “The center-opening doors became synonymous with the Lincoln Continental, even though they were only featured primarily in the ’60s,” says David Woodhouse, design director, The Lincoln Motor Company. “But they struck such a chord that they’re still remembered so fondly today.” Woodhouse says the element is both dramatic and distinctive. “It was truly a watershed moment for us in terms of iconic design,” he adds. Each of the 80 units in this limited production for 2019 will have a special door sill plate featuring its number in the run. A limited number of additional Continental Coach Door Edition sedans will be available as well for the 2020 model year. The Lincoln Continental 80th Anniversary Coach Door provides the refinements and advanced features today’s luxury vehicle client desires. From the doors to the seating

to the Lincoln Black Label interior, no detail has been overlooked. Rear-seat amenities are uniquely tailored, featuring an elegantly crafted pass-through console that offers a stowable tray table with tablet holder and wireless charging pad. Rear-seat passengers will be more comfortable than ever. The six inches added to the car’s wheelbase allow for the placement of the larger coach doors, while also delivering best-in-class second-row legroom.

innovative electronic door system allows doors to be unlatched in a smooth, single motion, making entry and exit both effortless and quiet. With Lincoln’s exclusive 3.0-liter twinturbocharged V6 engine, Continental delivers the power and performance today’s luxury clients expect with an impressive 400 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque. Three Drive Modes, including Normal, Sport and Comfort, allow clients to personalize their driving experience.

Continental clients will have their choice of Lincoln Black Label themes, the brand’s most personalized level of luxury, including Chalet and Thoroughbred. Lincoln Black Label not only provides the highest quality of materials in customized designer themes, it also offers a host of membership privileges. These include annual vehicle detailing, anytime carwashes, and access to a selection of restaurants where noted chefs will provide a curated dining experience. This limited-edition model is available to order now through Lincoln Black Label dealers. The Lincoln Continental 80th Anniversary Coach Door Edition is set to arrive next summer.

Celebrating form and function The center-opening coach doors are a celebration of both form and function. Woodhouse says they showcase the interior of an exceptionally beautiful vehicle. The 90-degree opening makes for easy, graceful entry and exit by allowing passengers to turn to sit to enter, then exit the car by stepping forward and out. “People appreciate elegance and glamour,” says Woodhouse. “And they want the easiest way to get in and out of a vehicle. These doors answer to both.” The car is meticulously crafted inside and out, integrating technologies that both assist and entertain. This Continental senses a driver’s approach and lights up with Lincoln’s trademark sequential welcoming embrace. Its award-winning Head-Up display contributes to a custom driving experience by letting drivers choose what information is projected onto the windshield display. The feature is so innovative that it is visible even with ambient lighting and when the driver is wearing polarized sunglasses.

HYUNDAI ELANTRA OWNER DRIVES ONE MILLION MILES IN JUST FIVE YEARS FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Dec. 19, 2018 – In just five years, a delivery driver from Olathe, Kansas drove her 2013 Elantra one million miles with the original powertrain. Farrah Haines is a proud Hyundai owner who drives about 200,000 miles a year delivering auto parts and products, far outpacing the 14,000 miles [1] of the average American driver. Since most digital odometers stop before one million, Hyundai joined her as she hit her epic milestone and presented her with the first-ever 1 Million Mile Emblem and added it to her odometer. The emblem is a genuine Hyundai part and is now available for the odometers of all million mile drivers. “This is not only a milestone for Farrah, but also for Hyundai and the quality of our vehicles,” said Dean Evans, CMO, Hyundai Motor America. “Reaching one million miles with the original powertrain in just five years is an extremely rare and incredible achievement. We created the 1 Million Mile Emblem because we believe in making things better for our loyal customers and look forward to other Hyundai drivers joining Farrah in the one million mile club.” To recognize this incredible achievement, Hyundai and its agency of record, INNOCEAN Worldwide Americas, created a digital video that was released on Dec. 5 that tells Farrah’s story. The video is available

thank Farrah for being such a dedicated owner by surprising her with a new 2019 Hyundai Elantra. Since she delivers auto parts and other products seven days a week, day and night, Hyundai decided to order her a surprise delivery. Farrah stopped by a local auto shop to drop off what she thought was an auto part but she was instead greeted by her friends, family, and her very own 2019 Elantra. A video of the surprise giveaway was captured and posted on Hyundai’s YouTube channel today: https://youtu.be/ twoJahPTjq4. While Farrah’s achievement might seem impossible, Hyundai ran multiple tests to validate her odometer reading. Product engineers inspected her engine casting numbers, service records, wire harness, and motor mounts. Hyundai service and system engineers also reviewed Farrah’s mileage records for her two jobs, as well as a VIN report, and Carfax.

“My Hyundai has been a great car to me,” said Farrah Haines, “I love to drive and have made a successful career out of it, so it was no surprise that I was able to get to a million miles. The key is to prioritize regular maintenance and to have a quality vehicle. Over the years I have been beyond pleased at my car’s performance, a quality that is inherit to the Hyundai brand. While it feels a bit like starting over, this gives me the opportunity to hit a million-five!”

HYUNDAI MOTOR REVEALS WORLD’S FIRST SMART FINGERPRINT TECHNOLOGY TO VEHICLES SEOUL, Dec. 24, 2018 — Hyundai Motor Company announced the world’s first smart fingerprint technology that allows drivers to not only unlock doors but also start the vehicle. Hyundai plans to implement the technology initially in the Santa Fe SUV model that is to be released in select markets in the first quarter of 2019.

Company. “This will ultimately offer quality driving experience to each and every Hyundai customer.”

The technology also provides a customized driving environment. Matching information of driver preference with fingerprint data, the vehicle automatically adjusts seating positions, connected car features, and side-view mirror angles according to the driver.

Hyundai also addressed the security issues on the smart fingerprint technology. With capacitance recognition, which detects differentials in the electricity level in various parts of the fingertip, the fingerprint technology efficiently prevents forgeries and faked fingerprints. The technology’s chance of misrecognizing another person’s finger print as the driver’s is only 1 in 50,000 making it five times more effective than conventional vehicle keys, including smart keys. Moreover, through real-time learning of fingerprints supported by ‘dynamic update’ system, the fingerprint system can continually improve its success rate.

“In the future, Hyundai Motor plans to further expand the application of the technology to allow the adjustment of temperature, steering wheel position, and many other features which will be tailored to driver’s preferences” said Albert Biermann, President and Head of Research & Development Division of the Hyundai Motor

Hyundai will apply the fingerprint technology in select markets and gradually expand to other markets. Hyundai Motor also plans to continue to implement other customizable technologies to the vehicle lineup, to strengthen technological leadership in the future mobility market.

To unlock the vehicle, the driver needs to place a finger on the sensor located on the door handle. The encrypted fingerprint information will be identified and delivered to the fingerprint controller inside the vehicle. The driver can also easily start the vehicle by touching the ignition that is also equipped with a fingerprint scanning sensor.
