We are proud to announce our March $10,000 grant winner, Meals on Wheels of Ocean County. Did you know? Ocean County is home to more than 162,019 senior citizens. Of those, 20,050 are 85 years of age or older. (2013 U.S. Census. American Fact Finder) Members of the 85+ age group are estimated to have three times the risk of losing their independence and seven times the chance of entering a nursing home compared to people 65 to 74 years of age.
Causeway presenting the grant award to Meals on Wheels of Ocean County (From left to right) - Jennifer Maier Sales, Joe Stroffolino Director of Adverting and Marketing, Jim Sigurdson Executive Director of Meals on Wheels of Ocean County, Ginny Haines Ocean County Freeholder, Dave Wintrode President Causeway Family of Dealerships.
I got to sit with Jim Sigurdson, the Executive Director of Meals on Wheels of Ocean County. Meals on Wheels is a home delivered meal program for Ocean County residents who are; 60 years of age or older, homebound, unable to prepare their own meals and have no one available to assist them with meal preparation. Jim discussed the importance of Meals on Wheels and having paid employees. Jim stressed the fact that Meals on Wheels is more than just a food delivery service. They are the eyes and ears for the community. Every time a meal is delivered to a home, the driver must hear or see the senior in order for them to receive the food. Drivers are absolutely not allowed to just ring the bell and leave the food on the door step. By doing this, they are able to make sure the recipient is doing ok. These delivery drivers become so accustomed to seeing these seniors every day that they not only build a trusting relationship, but can tell when something is not right. If a delivery driver feels that the senior is a little off then they immediately let someone know so that a loved one or doctor can check on them.
Full calendar at: thesandpaper.villagesoup.com
Meals on Wheels pay their employees instead of using volunteers because these seniors depend on the food arriving to their homes every day. The hassle of scheduling volunteers to drive these major routes every single day would not be feasible. There is too much risk involved.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Jetty teaming up with Live With Purpose to present Paws For a Cause March 11, 2019, Manahawkin, NJ – Jetty has always toyed with the idea of creating dog products as a supplement to their apparel line. In 2018, as part of their Future Leaders entrepreneurship program, they introduced the Paw Your Own Line collection which included dog collars, harnesses, and leashes. Southern Regional High School students in the entrepreneurship elective learn about every aspect of small business under Jetty’s tutelage through classroom visits by the staff. “We get over to the classroom at least once a month for the entire school year, and we use the life cycle of our products to educate the Future Leaders about design, marketing, finance, inventory, and sales. This year the dog-related products were brand new for us, so it was a win-win. We had to do all of the planning to introduce the dog capsule of products so using it as a part of the kid’s curriculum is pretty cool,” said Jetty CEO Jeremy DeFilippis. The Future Leaders program runs via Jetty’s 501(C)3 and nonprofit arm, the Jetty Rock Foundation. Doug & Chris Lockwood are community members in the LBI Region who recently started their own nonprofit, Live With Purpose. “We want to create a legacy for our children, and by starting our foundation, we can give them a direct way to give back to our community. Meeting with the Jetty crew last Summer to brainstorm sparked the idea for a dog-related event and eventually Paws For a Cause is what came from the partnership,” said Doug Lockwood, Fundraising Director of Live With Purpose. Paws For a Cause is a traditional 5K race with a twist as it allows dog lovers to sign up as well to either run with their dog or complete the 1-mile fun walk. Sponsorships are still available, and racers/walkers can register online at PawsForaCause.net. The partnership between Jetty & Live With Purpose has opened up an entirely new list of regional sponsors. It has also allowed Jetty to tie the event back to its Future Leaders program as students will volunteer to help organize the event. All funds from the charitable race will be donated via Jetty Rock Foundation and Live With Purpose to a Southern Regional family in need of a service dog. “This is our first event, so it is nerve-racking, but exciting all at the same time! The Jetty crew has a great history of running events, and with this new one, we get to be a part of it and have some ownership as well. We’re looking forward to a great day on April 27th and even more so to executing the donation of a service dog to a family in need,” said Chris Lockwood, Foundation Director of Live With Purpose.

Corned Beef and Cabbage YIELDS:
6 to 8 Servings ACTIVE TIME:
0 HOURS 30 MINS COOK TIME:
3 HOURS 30 MINS Ingredients 1 cup kosher salt 1 cup brown sugar 1 1/2 tablespoons whole coriander 1 1/2 tablespoons whole mustard seeds 1 1/2 tablespoons whole black peppercorns 1 1/2 tablespoons whole allspice 4 sprigs fresh marjoram 4 sprigs fresh thyme leaves 2 bay leaves 1 (2 1/2 to 3 pound) brisket 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 onion, halved 6 carrots, coarsely chopped 1 head celery including leaves, coarsely chopped 1 head garlic, halved 3 sprigs fresh marjoram 1 small cabbage cut into 6 to 8 wedges Herbed Root Vegetables: 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 pound new potatoes, scrubbed 1 pound baby carrots, trimmed and scrubbed 1 pound baby turnips, trimmed and scrubbed 1 pound baby parsnips, trimmed and scrubbed Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1. Combine all the brine ingredients, except the brisket, in a large non-reactive bowl. Add the brisket (you may have to cut it into 2 pieces) and rub the spice mix into the meat. Pour cold water over until the meat is covered. Weight the brisket down with a small plate so that it is completely submerged; cover and refrigerate. The meat can be brined overnight or as long as 10 days. The longer the brining the more pickled the meat. 2. Heat the oven to 300 degrees F. 3. Heat a large pot or Dutch oven over mediumhigh heat and add the olive oil. Add the onion, carrots, celery, garlic, marjoram, and bay leaves and cook until starting to soften, about 10 minutes. Remove the meat from the brine and rinse it well. Set the meat on top of the vegetables and add water to just cover the meat. Bring to a boil skimming any foam that surfaces. Reduce the heat to a simmer, place the lid on the pot, and cook for 15 minutes. Add the cabbage pieces, cover, and put it into the oven; cook for 3 hours. 4. Remove the meat, cover it with foil, and let it rest for 20 minutes. Cut the fat off the corned beef, slice the meat against the grain, and serve it in shallow bowls with the cabbage wedges, some cooking liquid, and the Herbed Root Vegetables. Herb Butter: 5. Put the olive oil and butter into a large pot over medium-high heat. Add the vegetables and toss to coat them well with the fat; season with salt and pepper. Add 1 cup water and bring to a boil. Lower the heat to a simmer, cover the pot, and cook until the vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes. 6. Meanwhile, make the Herb Butter by combining the soft butter and herbs together; season with some salt and pepper. 7. To serve, spread some Herb Butter in the bottom of a bowl. Add the hot vegetables and dot with more Herb Butter. Moisten with some of the cooking liquid and serve.

MEALS ON WHEELS from page 1 meals a day, including 21 Meals on Wheels recipients for a total of over 25,000 total meals! Today – more than 40 years later, Meals on Wheels of Ocean County has grown, but our mission remains the same. We now have more than 50 full-time employees, with 8 on-site meal centers and a Meals on Wheels program that covers the 628 square miles of Ocean County every day. Meals on Wheels prepare about 1,200 meals per day and nearly 300,000 meals annually. We also provide 16 distinct nutrition and senior support services to over 8,000 Ocean County seniors. More Than Meals Our work at Meals on Wheels of Ocean County goes beyond filling basic nutritional needs. We also play an important role in helping our seniors live active, meaningful lives We provide a diverse range of health, wellness, educational and outreach services, including: Benefits screening - We identify seniors in need and link them with the appropriate services. Education, socialization & recreation – Programs, presentations, games and other social activities are always on the schedule at our On-Site Meal Centers. Transportation - We provide medical transportation services to seniors living in Lakewood, Jackson and Point Pleasant. Volunteer friendly visitor and telephone reassurance— Our trained volunteers provide an outlet for social contact, helping isolated seniors stay connected. Physical activity—Low-impact physical activities are provided at our On-Site Meal Centers. Language translation and interpretation – Spanish only. For Outreach Services call 732-267-1400 or email info@ csimow.org Volunteers: A Few Hours a Week Means a World of Difference Here at Meals on Wheels of Ocean County, we depend on the dedication and generosity of our team of volunteers to help us with our mission of feeding every hungry senior. Fortunately, all Meals on Wheels routes have a full driving roster right now but there is always more to be done. What can I do? We are actively seeking volunteers for Telephone
Reassurance and Friendly Visitors. This is one of our most vital services, providing much-needed contact with our most vulnerable seniors. Here’s why: Imagine, you live far from your friends or loved ones and there is no one that can check in daily to make sure that they are ok. Our volunteer callers and visitors provide wellness checks and much-needed social contact. For isolated and lonely seniors, these calls and visits are truly a lifeline. What does it take? Providing a friendly voice and social contact to our seniors is an essential component of our mission. That makes this the single most important job for volunteers. We provide all the training, and matching with seniors. It’s time to debunk some of the myths about Meals on Wheels. : Myth: Meals on Wheels is an entitlement program. Fact: We are not an entitlement program. Our funding comes from grants and donations from our friends and neighbors in Ocean County. If our funding runs out, Meals on Wheels goes away. It’s that simple. This is why we’re asking for your donation today. Myth: Advances in medicine & technology means Meals on Wheels isn’t as necessary as it was. Fact: Seniors living longer though many are outliving their savings. In fact, what the U.S. Census Bureau refers to as “the oldest old”—seniors 85 and over—are the fastestgrowing population in the country. This is especially true right here Ocean County. We are home to two of the towns with the largest percentage of 85+ senior citizens in the entire United States–Berkeley and Manchester. Myth: Meals on Wheels meals are cheap to prepare. Fact: It costs more than $10 per meal to prepare and serve each meal. That includes food costs, delivery expenses, gas, etc. All we ask is for recipients to consider a small donation of $2 per meal to help defray the costs. In order to continue providing these meals, we need your help. Please make a donation today. Myth: All Meals on Wheels of Ocean County does is deliver food. Fact: In addition to serving meals, our drivers serve as a daily wellness and safety check. Imagine…you live far from your loved ones and there’s no one that can check in daily to make sure they’re ok, or even say hi. That’s a big part of our job. Our Meals on Wheels drivers get to know our clients, becoming a regular, friendly face, as well as a set of eyes and ears providing reassurance that they’re OK.

MOVING TIPS
Let’s be honest. Moving day can be hard. Organization is the key to making your move as smooth as possible. Here are some helpful tips: • Have a yard sale to get rid of unused items. Or if you do not have time, donate the unused items to a charity. • If you get free boxes from a supermarket or liquor store, make sure to reinforce the boxes • Use sturdy boxes and pack fragile items with care. • Use bubble wrap or packing material for extra padding. • Mark FRAGILE clearly on any fragile boxes, so that movers can identify them easily. • Pack heavy items in small boxes to avoid boxes getting too heavy. • Label all boxes so you know where to put them in new home.
• Make an “Open Me First” box and fill it with toilet papers, soap, toothpaste, paper plates, paper towels, snacks, tools, etc. Have all your essentials in this box and have it loaded last so that you can get it out first. • Read all moving documents before signing with mover. If you do not understand something, ask. • Take all personal or confidential information with you and not in moving truck (medical records, financial records, etc).

Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 which designated the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.” Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month. It features port fuel and direct injection for improved efficiency versus the outgoing 3.7-liter engine. The 2020 Ford Transit offers the most vehicle configurations in its class to help customers specify just the right van for any job. In addition to cargo van, passenger van, chassis cab and cutaway, a new crew van joins the lineup. It can carry five people in two rows of seating with side curtain airbags. Tailored for owners who need to move larger crews plus gear to a job site, the crew van is an enhancement to the 2020 Ford Transit family based on customer feedback. A more capable Transit Because work doesn’t stop when the weather gets bad, Transit offers an intelligent all-wheel-drive system that’s always on to provide enhanced traction on icy, snowy or muddy roads. “We integrated Transit’s new all-wheel-drive system into the vehicle design early on to ensure it does not raise the load floor or seat height, making this van configuration as easy to enter and exit as the standard rear-wheel-drive model,” said Ray Eyles, Ford Transit chief program engineer. “This is a significant benefit for commercial drivers who are in and out of their vehicles dozens of times a day, as well as for shuttle bus passengers and families.” In normal mode, this all-wheel-drive system continuously monitors and optimizes torque output with the capability of sending up to 100 percent of available torque to the front wheels to help prevent slipping on loose surfaces. Using the vehicle’s selectable drive modes, the driver can engage mud and ruts or slippery modes at any speed to help increase the all-wheel-drive system’s capability for traveling in challenging conditions. Allwheel drive is available with gasoline powertrains. With 2020 Transit chassis cab and cutaway models, customers can also carry more, as the maximum GVWR

THE ALL-NEW NISSAN ROGUE NAMED ONE OF ALTIMA AUTOTRADER’S ‘GOOD AS NEW: 10 BEST NISSAN EARNS ITS PLACE AMONG THE ALL-STARS CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED’ VEHICLES FOR 2019
2014 - 2018 models of Nissan’s best-selling Rogue compact crossover noted for technology, value and certified pre-owned warranty NASHVILLE – Something old, something new. When it comes to the Nissan Rogue compact crossover, it not only ranks as the brand’s top-selling new vehicle, it has just been named as one of Autotrader’s “10 Best Certified Pre-Owned” vehicles. According to Autotrader, certified pre-owned vehicles accounted for a record 2.7 million sales in 2018. To help car shoppers find the top choices in this fast-growing area, Autotrader’s expert editors named the 10 Best CPO Cars for 2019 and the 10 Best CPO Luxury Cars for 2019. “As more features are added to today’s vehicles, newcar prices continue to rise, with even ‘affordable’ models costing as much as $35,000 or $40,000,” said Brian Moody, executive editor of Autotrader. “Our list of ‘good as new’ vehicles can bring the car a consumer wants into the price range they want to pay. These CPO vehicles are thoroughly inspected, covered by warranties and offer the latest designs, making it difficult to even tell the difference between their new car counterparts.” In naming 2014 - 2018 Rogue to the list, the editors wrote: “The Rogue last received a full redesign for the 2014 model year, and therefore examples up to five years old look just like brand new models. Nissan’s certified pre-owned limited warranty is pretty good too, offering coverage for 7 years or 100,000 miles from the vehicle’s original sale date.” They also noted Rogue’s wide range of available technology features. “Since the second-generation Rogue was launched five years ago, sales have been phenomenal – meaning the immense customer demand for new Rogues has carried over into the pre-owned Rogues,” said Brandon White, director, CMM & Marketing Operations, Nissan North America, Inc. “We’re pleased to be recognized by a leading authority like Autotrader for something we’ve always known – old or new, Rogue is a tremendous vehicle and tremendous value.” All 2014 – 2018 Rogues, along with the latest 2019 model, are available in three well-equipped grade levels, S, SV and SL – each offering a highly desirable combination of compact overall size and ample interior roominess. Each is equipped with a responsive 2.5-liter
4-cylinder engine matched with an advanced Xtronic transmission.

2020 LINCOLN AVIATOR PREVIEW
The 2020 Lincoln Aviator gives strong evidence that Ford’s luxury bona fides don’t start and end with the fullsize Navigator. Revealed at the 2018 LA Auto Show, the 2020 Aviator leaps into the niche between the Navigator SUV and the Nautilus crossover, as it revives a nameplate Lincoln hasn’t touched since the 2006 model year. As it did back then, the new Lincoln Aviator shares some running gear with the Explorer—only this time, it’s the Aviator that’s been spotted in the wild first, as Ford preps the 2020 Explorer for its debut at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. With the new Aviator, Lincoln sets up a dogfight with some of the best luxury SUVs: the new BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, the Volvo XC90, and the Audi Q7. We’ll let you know which one rates highest when we get the chance to drive one. Based on a new architecture that makes its debut in the new SUV, the 2020 Lincoln Aviator sports three available rows of seats, rear- or all-wheel drive, an air suspension with adaptive dampers, new safety gear, and an available hybrid drivetrain. The standard drive system will be a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6, which Lincoln pegs at 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. The plug-in hybrid only will be offered on a new Aviator Grand Touring edition; as the most powerful Lincoln ever built, it’ll boast at least 450 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. Both offerings will couple to a 10-speed automatic. The new hybrid propulsion system drops an electric motor between the transmission and the engine. A lithium-ion battery pack sits under the floor, on the passenger side, so as not to consume too much storage space.
Lincoln hasn’t provided any details on the battery size, its electric-only driving range, its acceleration, or its charge times.
It has outlined the Aviator’s new suspension, which comes with extravagantly named settings. “Showroom” drops the ride height for profiling in the parking lot, while “Entry” limbos lower for easy passenger access. “Excite” notches the Aviator even lower for improved handling and fuel economy, while “Deep” raises the vehicle for snow and other obstacles. The ride heights team with powertrain drive modes: Normal, Conserve, Slippery, and Deep Conditions drive modes. The Grand Touring gains a Pure EV mode; it allows the vehicle to run on battery power alone. It also has a Preserve EV setting that maintains battery charge at a certain state by drawing on engine power. The 2020 Aviator asks drivers if they’d like to change hybrid modes if the throttle position exceeds the hybrid pack’s abilities. HAL 2000, are you out there? The Aviator’s predictive suspension interpolates camera data to adjust the suspension, and its electric power steering and stability systems can steer the SUV and adjust the throttle in traffic jams; they can also brake the vehicle when it detects approaching obstacles as it reverses, or steer out of harm’s way when it “sees” obstacles on the road ahead. The 2020 Aviator will allow owners to open the vehicle
with their smartphones, to run almost all its secondary systems (phone, climate, navigation) through massive touchscreen displays or steering-wheel controls, or to adjust their front seats 30 ways. The Aviator’s second-row seats slide on a track for better third-row access, and recline for long-distance comfort. On the technology front, The new Lincoln Aviator will offer a wide-screen head-up display, wireless smartphone charging, and a choice between two Revel audio systems, one with 3D surround sound and 28 speakers. Lincoln will offer the Aviator in base, Reserve, and Black Label trims, though the Grand Touring will only be available in base and Black Label. Lincoln has not set prices, and the EPA has not determined fuel economy ratings yet, since the 2020 Aviator doesn’t go on sale until summer 2019.

2019 HONDA HR-V EARNS IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK RATING The 2019 Honda HR-V has earned a TOP SAFETY PICK (TSP) rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), when equipped with optional front crash prevention and specific headlights, including the highest possible rating of “Good” in all six crashworthiness tests and a “Superior” rating for its available Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™), part of the Honda Sensing® suite of driver assistive and safety technologies. Refreshed for the 2019 model year, the 2019 HR-V received numerous updates to its structure to improve frontal crash performance, as demonstrated in the IIHS’ small and moderate front overlap tests. In addition, Honda Sensing is now standard on EX and above trims, which, in addition to
CMBS, includes Forward Collision Warning; Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) incorporating Lane Departure Warning (LDW); Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS); and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). On the new-for-2019 HR-V Touring trim, multi-element LED headlights earned an Acceptable rating in the IIHS evaluation. The 2019 HR-V is the sixth Honda model to receive a top safety rating from the IIHS. The 2019 Honda Accord, CR-V, Pilot and Odyssey all received TSP, while Insight earned a TOP SAFETY PICK+, the Institute’s highest rating. Separately, every Honda model that has been fully evaluated in NHTSA’s 2019 model year NCAP testing, including the 2019 HR-V, has received a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score.
HONDA CR-V EARNS TOP PEDESTRIAN DETECTION AND CRASH PREVENTION RATINGS FROM THE INSURANCE INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY consider the safety of all road users when designing advanced safety systems like those included in Honda Sensing®,” said Jay Joseph, assistant vice president of product planning for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “We have sold nearly 1.8 million Honda vehicles equipped with Honda Sensing in the United States, underscoring our leadership and commitment to the widespread application of these important technologies.”
The Honda CR-V for the 2018 and 2019 model years has earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest pedestrian detection and crash prevention rating of “Superior” based on new testing of CR-V’s available Honda Sensing® suite of safety and driverassistive technologies, which includes the award-winning Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™). In previous tests by the IIHS, the CR-V’s CMBS was also rated “Superior” for Crash Avoidance and Mitigation. “IIHS’ pedestrian crash avoidance tests can be unnerving to watch, since they are set up to look like an impending collision with a pedestrian. HYUNDAI MOTOR SHARES FIRST GLIMPSE OF ALL-NEW SONATA
•
First model to embody Sensuous Sportiness design language
•
2020 Sonata showcases sporty four-door-coupe silhouette with spacious interior
•
Sonata to employ an array of advanced features, such as Hidden Lighting Lamps, a Hyundai first, that turn chromic when off and lit when on
The all-new Sonata takes its inspiration from the awardwinning Le Fil Rouge concept, which debuted at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show. Like the concept car, the production Sonata attracts immediate attention with its Sensuous Sportiness design. Sensuous Sportiness is defined by the harmony between four fundamental elements in vehicle design: proportion, architecture, styling and technology. Sonata has a distinct tension on the side using a harmonious blend of layered crisp body lines and pure volumes. Concave and convex forms are also carefully orchestrated to provide a sexy, coupe-like character.
Hyundai cars. The side sections of the Sonata are accentuated by the light architecture, which connects two chromic lines seamlessly linking the windows and daytime running lights. Through these two characteristic lines, the Sonata effuses an athletic and elegant charm. The all-new Sonata has a wide, layered long hood, a very low stance and a sleek roofline. The feeling of width is also achieved with ultra-wide taillights.
The new Sonata’s frontal section is defined by two elements: a bold, voluminous shape evoking a smooth sphere and a cleanly demarcated hood.
The light architecture is also applied to the interior space with the ambient mood lamp illuminating dashboard and doors. In the interior, the instrument panel is rich and modern, and the recognizable winged shape is inspired by a Stealth aircraft. This shape almost levitates or floats when looked at, and this philosophy carries into the long armrests. Satin chrome accents enhance this effect. Designers compressed the height of the dashboard and HVAC vents as much as possible to aid the light-weight feeling, while modern, light fabric colors and leathers provide a fresh and freeing ambiance for the driver. The clean and sleek design is carried through the centergauge cluster display. Designers aimed to alleviate the distracting large screens featured in many luxury cars today and instead threaded the two displays together on the 2020 Sonata, using a unique S curve. These displays are seamless, with no parting lines, and have capacitive touch buttons. Additional features include a satin chrome accent on the steering wheel, which looks like an aircraft yoke, and shift-by-wire transmission controls to free up storage space.
Furthermore, the Digital Pulse Cascading Grille, which resembles the grille of a sports car with its rhythmic visuals, is sleekly connected to the hood, strengthening the overall perception of the front.
The eighth-generation Sonata embodies Hyundai’s Sensuous Sportiness design concept. It is a fully transformed vehicle following the release of the seventhgeneration Sonata in 2014. “Sonata celebrates innovative coupe-like silhouette,”

In particular, the Daytime Running Lights, embedded with Hidden Lighting Lamps—the first for a Hyundai vehicle—are a chief design innovation that incorporates state-of-the-art lighting technology, forming the Sonata’s light architecture. The light architecture was initially revealed through Hyundai’s HDC-2 concept car at the Busan Motor Show in June last year. It was created by fleshing out the
