ST. FRANCIS COMMUNITY CENTER CAUSEWAY’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY GRANT

By Kaitlyn Strohmeier

In Celebration of The Causeway Family of Dealerships 50th anniversary, we continue with our yearlong campaign - Causeway’s 50 Golden Acts of Good - to help our neighbors and positively impact Ocean County. Anchoring this campaign is the Grant Giveaway program, through which Causeway awards a $10,000 grant to one Ocean County nonprofit every month, from January through November of 2019, culminating next December with the award of a New Ford Transit Connect Van. We are proud to announce our August $10,000 grant winner, the St. Francis Community Center – Educational & Career Services. The St. Francis Community Center, LBICC, Inc. is a multi-purpose community center serving residents of Ocean County since 1971. Initially founded to serve the social and recreational needs of southern Ocean County, it quickly became apparent that in addition to the original programs, the Center would have to respond to the social service needs of the community. St. Francis Community Center has been providing social service programs to the community for the past 45 years. The goal of the St. Francis Community Center has always been to be a strong community focal point which offers a wide range of services and programs aimed at meeting the needs of Ocean County residents regardless of age, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or religious affiliation. Programs are offered to residents of the county, but the majority of the services provided are to those residents who are low income and working poor. St. Francis Community Center has been addressing the needs of residents to assist with personal, financial, child care, mental health, and additional barriers that prohibit participants from becoming self-sufficient. The goal is to ensure stability and self-sufficiency for residents to become contributing members of their community. St. Francis is committed to provide essential programs and successful at obtaining funding from a variety of federal, state and local resources. Programs offered: Preschool; Senior Center; Aquatic Center; Counseling Center; Family Support Services, Youth Program; Educational & Career Services; Recreation Program; Volunteer Program and many Special Events. The Center’s facilities include: A regulation gymnasium; competition-size indoor pool;

DRIVER ASSIST TECHNOLOGY COULD END ‘ANNOYING’ BACKSEAT-DRIVER BEHAVIORS ON THE ROAD

“You can get over a lane.” “Watch that truck!” “You’re trailing too close. Slow down!” Ah, the incessant chirps of the backseat driver.

Perhaps the days of a driver hearing those common calls from the backseat are coming to an end, thanks to driver-assist technology like Ford Co-Pilot360™. According to a recent study from Ford and sociologist Jess Carbino, 68 percent of drivers believe that backseat driving behavior will decrease because of driver-assist technology. Ford Co-Pilot360 Technology can help quiet backseat drivers and take the lead in helping drivers navigate the road with confidence. Available driverassist technologies – such as Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alert and Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking can help reduce the risk of collisions and build confidence in certain driving situations, while always allowing the driver to remain in control. For the study, Ford teamed with sociologist Dr.Jess Carbino, best known for her work with Bumble, and confirmed that backseat drivers can cause more harm than good for the well-being of those inside the vehicle.

Courtesy of Ford

“For a lot of drivers, constantly getting advice from passengers is more than just annoying, it’s stressful,” Carbino said. “The Ford Co-Pilot360 helps encourage trust during the drive and can help create a more relaxed, collaborative atmosphere in the car.”

Congratulations to the 2019 Causeway Family Ford Store Champs - Lake League! 55 - 53 Win!

In fact, the study’s findings contradict a growing belief that technology inhibits human connection. Insights from the study show that while backseat driving can cause invehicle relationships to suffer, driver-assist technology can help avoid unnecessary backseat banter. Since the technology can help assist with some of the burdensome tasks of navigating, drivers and passengers can focus on more enjoyable aspects of the ride, namely each other. The data also suggests that since respondents have confidence in the technology, it can help eliminate the perceived need for their backseat driving input. “Certainly the intent of Ford Co-Pilot360 Technology was not to eliminate backseat driving,” Chris Billman, Ford Co-Pilot360 engineering manager, said with a laugh. “But hey, if we can help in that way too, that’s great!”

NISSAN REAR DOOR ALERT CAN HONK TO REMIND DRIVERS TO CHECK THEIR BACK SEAT Potential issues posed by interior car temperatures are still a danger well into the fall, and Nissan hopes its simple, yet clever, Rear Door Alert (RDA)1 technology may help reduce risks. Even with outside temperatures in the 60s, the interior of a car can heat to dangerous levels quickly. Nissan vehicles with RDA Since 2019 model year, RDA is standard on the Nissan Altima, Armada, LEAF, Murano, Maxima, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport (2019.5) and TITAN (King Cab and Crew Cab). For the 2020 model year, it also is available on the all-new subcompact Versa (standard on SV and SR trim levels). How RDA works The system monitors when a rear door is opened and closed before and after the vehicle is in motion. If a rear door was used before a trip but was not opened after the vehicle is parked, the system reminds the driver. Once the vehicle is in park, the system will first display a notification in the instrument panel. If the driver exits the vehicle and does not open a rear door, the system progresses to distinctive chirps of the horn. The RDA system is easy to configure and can be temporarily, or permanently, turned on through a menu in the cluster display or through a separate RDA switch, depending on the model.

FIREMAN CLIMBS 110 FLOORS AT TUCKERTON GYM TO HONOR 9/11 TUCKERTON, NJ — Matt Gilmore was only 7, but he clearly remembers the September 11 terrorist attacks. Eighteen years later, he goes extra lengths to make sure nobody forgets. Gilmore volunteers for the Parkertown Volunteer Fire Company in Little Egg Harbor. On the anniversary of 9/11, he put on his firefighting gear and got onto the stair stepper at Retro Fitness in Tuckerton. He climbed 110 floors — the distance to the top of the World Trade Center. The 25-year-old is already unique. Gilmore is one of several deaf volunteer firefighters in the United States. He is a motivational speaker, and the National Association of the Deaf recognized him in 2017. He began performing the stairstepper tribute annually in 2016. “I want people to remember, to look at me and remember,” Gilmore said through an interpreter. Firefighters throughout the nation participate in the stair-stepper tradition, which honors the 343 firefighters who died for their efforts that day.

He remembers the September 11th attacks well. Now he does what he can to make sure nobody ever forgets.

Gilmore participates in these events when he

Last year, Gilmore completed 103 floors in 52 minutes. This year, 110 flights took him 90 minutes this year — he says he’s a little out of shape. Gilmore gets chills thinking back to Sept. 11, 2001. He was in school in Florida. It was a beautiful morning. Then two teachers ran into his classroom and turning on the bulky TV that hung on the wall. He saw the fire and the towers collapsing. He saw the second plane hit. Parents, feeling paranoid, picked up their kids from school. Gilmore’s mother tried to explain what happened, but he could hardly understand it at that age. It wasn’t until later that Gilmore understood the impact of that day and first-responders’ efforts. Now he makes sure everyone understands. “I’m not doing it for me,” Gilmore said. “I’m doing it for them.” Courtesy of patch.com

ALL-NEW AVIATOR TAKES FLIGHT WITH ADVANCED PERFORMANCE, GRAND TOURING OFFERING

The all-new 2020 Lincoln Aviator defines effortless luxury performance among premium SUVs, offering impressive power and capability combined with sleek elegance and intuitive technology. Delivering Quiet Flight, Aviator offers two powertrains – a standard twinturbocharged 3.0-liter V6 gas engine and the Grand Touring’s hybrid powertrain. This marks the first time Lincoln has combined a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine and advanced electrified hybrid technology capable of delivering smooth performance and nearly instantaneous torque. “Aviator signals a takeoff point for Lincoln,” says Joy Falotico, president, The Lincoln Motor Company. “It offers unparalleled elegance combined with effortless performance – a true representation of Lincoln’s vision for the future.” Aviator is the brand’s first midsize three-row SUV, broadening the Lincoln portfolio that will also see the launch of the all-new Corsair this fall. Luxury performance defined Based on a rear-wheel-drive architecture, Aviator offers a compelling combination of performance, capability and choice, with intelligent all-wheel drive available and the option of a gasoline or hybrid powertrain.

The standard twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine, paired with a new 10-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission, delivers 400 horsepower and 415 ft.-lbs. of torque* for effortless acceleration.

The powerful electric motor, with maximum output of 75 kilowatts and a 13.6-kilowatt-hour battery pack in Aviator Grand Touring, is designed to complement the performance of the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine. Together, they produce robust, effortless performance while maintaining a whisper-quiet cabin.

With the hybrid option, Aviator Grand Touring’s twin-turbocharged engine and advanced electrified technology takes the levels of performance even higher, with an impressive 494 combined horsepower and best-in-class 630 combined ft.-lbs. of torque.*

Complementing the impressive powertrain performance is an advanced suspension that pairs pothole mitigation and Lincoln-first road preview technology to create a ride that adjusts to nearly any situation. Key components of this

“With Aviator Grand Touring, we are aiming to set the bar for luxury SUVs,” says John Davis, chief program engineer,

advanced suspension include: Available Adaptive Suspension, which uses a suite of 12 sensors that constantly monitor vehicle motion, body movement, steering, acceleration and braking activities. These sensors read the road 500 times per second and can automatically prompt setting adjustments up to 100 times per second. The suspension’s advanced pothole mitigation can sense when a wheel is dropping into a severe dip and stiffens the shock absorber to reduce the amount of drop, lessening the harshness of a tire strike. Each wheel responds independently, allowing the vehicle to tailor its response to any given road surface. Available

Suspension with Road Preview, which uses the forward-facing camera to read the road nearly 50 feet ahead to look for height deviations between two and eight inches and adjust the suspension to mitigate any unpleasant impact. Available Air Glide Suspension, which offers the highest level of refinement by replacing traditional coil springs with guided air springs, enabling several preset ride heights for increased comfort and capability. An additional benefit, Dynamic Lower Entry, adds a new level of sophistication to Lincoln’s trademark embrace - upon approach, Aviator lowers to greet the driver. The convenience of this feature makes loading cargo easier as well.

HONDA CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF MANUFACTURING IN AMERICA

Honda associates today celebrated the 40th anniversary of the historic start of production at Honda of America Mfg., Inc. in Marysville, Ohio, in 1979, when the first 64 associates began producing the Elsinore CR 250 motorcycle, which began the rapid growth of Honda in America. After Honda became the first Japanese automaker to build products in the U.S., automobile production quickly followed on Nov. 1, 1982, at the adjacent Marysville Auto Plant in Ohio. Honda now has five U.S. auto plants and in 2018, nearly two-thirds of all Honda and Acura automobiles sold in the U.S. were made in America. With 12 major plants in the U.S., Honda also produces engines and transmissions, ATVs and side-by-side vehicles, a variety of power
