SOUTHERN REGIONAL'S DOG STARTS FIRE TRYING TO EAT GESICKI SCORES CUPCAKES; MANAHAWKIN KIDS SAVE DAY 1ST NFL TOUCHDOWN

MANAHAWKIN, NJ — Not all superheroes wear capes — some get their clothes from the kid's section. A dog turned on a Manahawkin home's stovetop Oct. 14 while trying to retrieve cupcakes up there. Four smart, attentive children saved the day.
CLEVELAND — The 2-9 Dolphins haven't given fans many reasons to celebrate this season. But with Mike Gesicki catching his first-career touchdown Sunday against the Browns, it's a good time to be a Southern Regional Ram.
Colton Davis, Brody Nacarlo, Landon Nacarlo and Avery Nacarlo were playing outside when they heard a neighbor's smoke alarm go off. The kids ran up to the house where they saw smoke inside the windows and a distressed dog barking by the front door. They quickly called 911 and ran back to their house to alert their mother. The Stafford police and fire departments quickly arrived and extinguished the fire. They determined the hungry dog was responsible, as the cupcakes caught fire when the pooch tried to retrieve them.
The Southern Regional product caught an 11-yard score from quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Gesicki, a tight end, has 31 receptions for 322 yards this season.

But since the children quickly called 911, the dog wasn't hurt and the fire was put out before any structural damage occurred. The children were recently honored
as Stafford Superheroes.

Gesicki in the second round — 42nd overall — in 2018. He played four years at Penn State, recording 1,481 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns, including nine as a senior in 2017. Gesicki caught 129 passes, the most for a tight end in team history. Gesicki was one of the nation's most highly touted tight end prospects at Southern Regional High School. He ended his career as the Rams' all-time leading receiver with 1,817 yards on 103 receptions, with 16 touchdown grabs.
Their bravery was recognized at Fusaro's Pizza, who donated food for the event.

GETTING READY FOR WOBM CHRISTMAS CLASSIC What started as a replacement tournament in 1984 has grown into one of the largest holiday basketball events in New Jersey and the 36th Annual WOBM Christmas Classic returns later this month to the RWJBarnabas Health Arena at Toms River High School North. The 7-day, 52 game high school hoops extravaganza is once again presented by InVision Eyecare of Lakewood and Eatontown and will run
from December 21-30. The field of 32 teams is virtually the same as it’s been for the past several years with two exceptions. On the boys side longtime participant St. Rose is not returning and has been replaced by a Wall team that won a division and state sectional title in 2019. With four starters back the Crimson Knights should be one of the top teams along with defending champion
Red Bank Catholic and perennial contenders Manasquan and Toms River North. The notable change to the girls field is the return of Manasquan who won the WOBM Christmas Classic three straight years (2013-15) before heading elsewhere during the holidays. They replace Sayreville and along with everyone else will be chasing a Manchester squad that is seeking its third straight
championship. This Sunday the 32 head coaches will gather at The Villa (across from The Office Lounge) in Toms River to seed the teams which will determine first round pairings. The 16 boys teams will play their first round games on Saturday, December 21st with the girls opening round the following day. We are grateful for the support of our sponsors, many of whom have been part of this event for
Among new sponsors for 2019 are Health Village Imaging and the Ocean County Vocational Technical School.

As the Civil War raged on, Lincoln believed that Thanksgiving might help to unite the divided country. He declared it a national holiday in 1863, and kept Thanksgiving as the last Thursday in November. Washington's idea was finally brought to life, and it was at this time that Thanksgiving became a bona fide, official holiday on the American calendar.

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY A CAR, A TRUCK OR EQUIPMENT BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR
This article is part of the End of Year Tax Tips Series from tax and legal expert Mark J. Kohler. It’s not uncommon for business owners to make big purchases before year-end to get the tax write-off. This couldn’t be truer when it comes to buying a car, truck, RV or van for your business. However, making that big purchase isn’t always the best long-term tax decision, not to mention the wisest economic decision. Both are critical issues that I will explore below.
PURCHASE AN SUV OR TRUCK AND TAKE OFF A DEDUCTION
than six feet. Both of these types of vehicles are treated the same for tax purposes. Yes, Congress and the IRS feel that many of these trucks with shorter truck beds are more like SUVs than trucks, thus they fall into the same tax category.
Is that why Thanksgiving is on the fourth Thursday of November?
Large trucks and vans. If the truck or van weighs more than 6,000 pounds and the truck has a six-foot bed (or greater) or is an enclosed delivery truck, then the $25,000 SUV limitation does not apply. In fact, you can deduct up to $500,000 for the cost of the vehicle in the year of purchase (limited to the business use percentage described previously).
Now, the allowable depreciation for these types of vehicles, on top of actual expenses described above, is that you can take up to $25,000 as a deduction right off the purchase price, whether the truck or SUV is new or used. You also get to take the standard annual depreciation deduction of around $3,000 in the year of purchase. This little $25,000 writeoff is often a perfect fit for a business owner looking for one of these types of vehicles, and it can exceed the mileage deduction in the first few years you own the vehicle.
Not quite. The story doesn't end there.
Essentially, there are two main On December 26, 1941, President options to write off auto expenses: Franklin D. Roosevelt decided to mileage or actual. The mileage method change the date to the fourth Thursday is quite obvious, but the definition the actual of “actual expenses” can get a little inmethod. Economic Tip
Because of the higher cost of these vehicles, it’s much more likely the actual method will far exceed the mileage method in the long run. This is also because the operational costs, such as gas and repairs, can be higher with these more expensive types of vehicles. Though again, keep in mind that these large depreciation deductions in the first year are limited to your net income. Therefore, a more profitable or seasoned business is going to get a better write-off than a company in startup mode that is not showing a profit yet.
From a dollars and cents standpoint, this strategy really pays off if you indeed want and need one of these types of vehicles -- and you don’t plan on putting a ton of miles on it or trading in the vehicle in three to four years. But for those of you planning to put on a ton of miles or keep the vehicle longer than the average American, the mileage method will give you more bang for your buck in the long run. Again, keep in mind the business use percentage of the depreciation and all of the actual expenses (fuel, repairs, maintenance, etc.). For example, say you have $20,000 in annual expenses and depreciation, and 80 percent of your use of the vehicle is for business. Thus, you are allowed a $16,000 deduction. Moreover, keep in mind that you have show net income in your business. The extra depreciation can’t put you into a “loss” to deduct against other income.

ALL-ELECTRIC MUSTANG MACH-E DELIVERS POWER, STYLE AND FREEDOM For the first time in 55 years, Ford is expanding the Mustang family, bringing the famous pony into the electric age with Mustang Mach-E, an all-new, all-electric SUV born of the same allAmerican ideals that inspired the bestselling sports coupe in the world. Ever since the original Mustang took the world by storm in 1964, it quickly came to represent the best of the American spirit: Freedom, progress, fast performance and a touch of rebellion. Now, Mustang is ready to reimagine these ideas for a powerful electric future, with space for customers’ growing needs and advanced over-the-air updates that continue to improve the vehicle. “At the first-ever Detroit auto show, Henry Ford said he was working on something that would strike like forked lightning,” said Bill Ford, executive chairman, Ford Motor Company. “That was the Model T. Today, the Ford Motor Company is proud to unveil a car that strikes like forked lightning all over

For a new generation of Mustang owners.” Developed in a century-old brick building a few blocks away from Henry Ford’s first factory in Detroit, Ford brought the Mustang Mach-E to life through a development process concentrated entirely on customer needs and desires. The result is a sleek, beautiful SUV that delivers spirited ride and handling, with state-of-theart connected vehicle technology that makes Mach-E even better over time. When it arrives in late 2020, Mustang Mach-E will be available with standard and extended-range battery options with

either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive powered by permanent magnet motors. Equipped with an extended-range battery and rear-wheel drive, Mach-E has a targeted EPA-estimated range of at least 300 miles. In extended-range allwheel-drive configurations, Mach-E is targeting 332 horsepower and 417 lb.-ft. of torque – with the standard all-wheeldrive variation targeting quicker times to 60 mph than the base Porsche Macan series.
Senior guard Riley Collins, left, scored his 1,500th career point in the first half, then poured in 14 points in the second period to lead the Drew University men’s basketball team to an 87-67 non-conference victory over King’s College on Dec. 4 in Baldwin Gym. Collins, who knocked down five 3-pointers and dished out eight assists, becomes just the sixth 1,500-point scorer in program history, and he now ranks fifth all-time at Drew with 1,514 points. Ford also will offer two special performance versions. The GT is targeting 0-60 mph in under 4 seconds2, making it faster off the line than a Porsche Macan Turbo3. The GT Performance Edition, meanwhile, is targeting a comparable 0-60 mph in the mid-3-second range to a Porsche 911 GTS.3 Both GT configurations are targeting an estimated 342 kW (459 horsepower) and 830 Nm (612 lb.-ft.) of torque.
OCC Women’s Basketball (4-1) battled conference rival Bergen Community College into overtime, and came away with their fourth win of the season in an 86-83 victory on Dec. 3. Ocean sophomore Molly Collins, left, was a key contributor in the win, supplying 30 points and dishing out 6 assists, while freshman Hannah Wagner had her best game of the season, with a 20-point, 9-rebound effort. Vikings freshman Shaunna Bruker battled illness to pick up her fifth double-double of the season, with 19 points and 24 rebounds in front of an excited home crowd.

The Best Rolled Sugar Cookies Ingredients
Courtesy of Nissan
11/2 cups butter, softened
4 eggs
5 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons baking powder
NISSAN REDESIGNS Directions ITS BEST-SELLING 1. 2. SENTRA SEDAN
In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour (or overnight). Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Roll out dough on floured surface 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Cut into shapes with any cookie cutter. Place
“Nissan has a vibrant portfolio of newgeneration sedans for customers in the U.S. market,” said David Kershaw, division vice president, Nissan Sales & Regional Operations, Nissan North America, Inc. “With more than 6 million Sentra vehicles sold, we believe the all-new Sentra will reach new heights offering refinement and quality, technology and performance not seen before. The lower stance and more athletic design cues from the Maxima sports sedan give Sentra a sexy new look.” Originally introduced for the 1982 model year, the eighth-generation Sentra is built on a new platform that provides greatly improved proportions and stance – about two inches lower and two inches wider than the previous generation. The exterior also incorporates Nissan’s latest design language found on its other dramatic sedans, including its signature V-motion grille, thin LED headlamps and floating roof. Sentra also features new wheel designs and a slate of new colors, including three new two-tone color combinations. Inside, the all-new interior of Sentra is more refined and luxurious, creating a high-quality experience for driver and passengers. Extra attention was paid to the smallest of details to improve the perceived and actual quality of the new Sentra. The feel of the steering wheel in the driver’s hands, the smooth operation of the dials and switches were carefully crafted to create a premium feel. Available amenities range from quilted, leather-appointed, heated
The 2020 Sentra also features a new, fuelefficient 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine rated at 149 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque – increases of 20 percent and 16 percent respectively over the previous generation’s 1.8-liter engine. The new engine is also projected to offer improved fuel economy. Dynamic performance has been greatly improved through the use of a new independent rear suspension and a new rack electric power steering system.
Peanut Blossoms II Ingredients
Advanced safety and driver assistance technologies, now available across the entire family of Nissan sedans, include standard Nissan Safety Shield 360, a suite of six advanced driver-assist systems that includes Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Rear Automatic Braking, and High Beam Assist. The new Sentra also offers standard 10 airbags, Rear Door Alert, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, and Intelligent Driver Alertness.

2020 HONDA CR-V NAMED GREEN SUV OF THE YEAR BY GREEN CAR JOURNAL The freshened 2020 Honda CR-V and all-new CR-V Hybrid have been named the 2020 Green SUV of the Year by Green Car Journal, the second time Honda has won Green SUV of the Year, and the sixth time a Honda vehicle has earned recognition from Green Car Journal.

HONDA ACCORD NAMED TO CAR AND DRIVER 10 BEST LIST FOR 2020 For the 34th time, the Honda Accord has been named to the prestigious Car and Driver 10Best list, a winning history unmatched by any other vehicle, with 2020 marking the 22nd consecutive year that the Accord has made the list. The 10th-generation Accord was introduced as a 2018 model, redefining expectations of what a mainstream midsize sedan could be with its dramatic styling, sophisticated and spacious interior, and powerful yet fuel-efficient turbocharged
engines. Joining the lineup a few months later, the Accord Hybrid offers outstanding fuel efficiency without sacrificing comfort, refinement or interior space, making Accord a standout among its peers. “Alert steering and fluid handling turn every dogleg on-ramp, cloverleaf interchange, and 270-degree off-ramp into a momentary escape from the monotonous and the mundane,” Car and Driver said in the article. “The precise action and satisfying weights of the steering wheel, the pedals,

“Honda’s CR-V is already efficient as a conventionallypowered model and wellestablished as a driver favorite,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCarJournal.com. “The addition of a new all-wheel drive CR-V using Honda’s proven two-motor hybrid system is an exceptional move, offering buyers an even more compelling reason to consider this award-winning model at the showroom.” The 2020 CR-V went on-sale in October with freshened exterior styling and upgraded features, including standard Honda Sensing® safety and driver-assistive technology for all trims (previously EX and above), and a more powerful engine for the CR-V LX—Honda’s 1.5-liter turbo. The all-new 2020 CR-V Hybrid, launching early next year, is Honda’s first hybrid SUV
in America and is expected to be the company’s top-selling hybrid model. Honda was recently recognized by the U.S. EPA as having the highest fleet-average fuel economy of any automaker. In pursuit of its goal to halve the company’s global CO2 emissions by 2050 (compared to 2000 levels), Honda is aiming to electrify two-thirds of its global automobile sales by 2030. In the U.S., Honda electrified vehicle sales in 2019 are up 34 percent from year-ago results to more than 50,000 hybrids, plug-in hybrids and fuel cell vehicles, with hybrid sales alone up 82 percent for the year. The 2020 CR-V and CR-V Hybrid mark the sixth time Honda has been awarded by Green Car Journal. Last year, the 2019 Honda Insight became the fourth Honda passenger car to win Green Car of the Year, joining prior winners the 2012 Honda Civic Natural Gas, 2014 Honda Accord, and 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid, Clarity Electric and Clarity Fuel Cell, while the 2016 Honda HR-V won Green SUV of the Year.
