21 PLUS, INC. RECEIVES “CAUSEWHEELS” DONATION With the celebration of The Causeway Family of Dealerships 50th anniversary coming to an end, we continue with a new yearlong campaign – “CauseWheels” Vehicle Donation Program - to help our neighbors and positively impact Ocean County. Recently, Causeway had two requests for vehicle donations to local non-profit organizations. We were able to accommodate each of these requests. This prompted an idea to follow up last year’s 50th Anniversary Grant program. Anchoring this campaign is the CauseWheels vehicle donation program, through which Causeway will award a used vehicle to one Ocean County nonprofit every month, from January through December of 2020. We are proud to announce our January winner, 21 Plus, Inc.

Mission Statement

21 Plus, Inc. is a non-profit charitable organization whose mission is to enable individuals with disabilities to lead fulfilling lives working in partnership with families and communities.

History

In 1979, a small group of families had a need. Their sons and daughters (who had developmental disabilities) were graduating from high school at age 21 and did not have a program, training or a job to look forward to. How would they spend their days? How would they socialize with friends? What did they have to look forward to? These families came together to form 21 Plus and opened a day program. It was located in a donated space in downtown Toms River. The word spread and the program quickly grew to 36 participants and relocated to a township building in Winding River Park. The organization was kept alive through private pay, donations and generous volunteer workers. As the needs of these young adults increased, the United Way and the State of New Jersey stepped in to help. 21 Plus responded by opening its first group home in 1982 on Old Freehold Road. This home was quickly followed by two additional homes in Toms River, as well as a Supported Employment program.

Anthony Pappalardo, Dave Wintrode President of The Causeway Family of Dealerships, Joe Stroffolino Director of Advertising and Marketing, Jocelyn Armstrong Director of Quality Management for 21 Plus, Robert Daley, Kristina Louis of 21 Plus, Corey Gellis General Sales Manager, and Anthony Agressi. Between 1988 and 1998, the agency developed a strategic plan for the growth that followed and added four new homes in Toms River. 21 Plus also varied program locations with one new home in Pine Beach and a second day program in Lakewood that serviced 36 people. The last phase of residential growth started in 2001 and resulted in relocating a group home in Toms River and opening five additional homes in Beachwood, Brick, Voorhees and Manchester. As the residents and participants at day programs aged and encountered medical problems, 21 Plus opened a Family Support Program by 2011. It also initiated a new business model in which 21 Plus behaviorists and a medical case manager consulted for 21 Plus and peer agencies. In 2018, 21 Plus transitioned from government funding to a Medicaid fee-for-service model. Although challenging, this new business model is the future of doing business in this field and in New Jersey. In conclusion, 21 Plus went from zero people served to 140 people served in 40 years. Congratulations on a record to be proud of!

The individuals in our programs go into the community and work in crews with staff guidance at local businesses. They provide small office cleaning services for which they receive minimum wage. If you are interested in our work crew cleaning your office or touring one of our programs, please contact Sarah Labore at latc21@21plus.org.

Our Supported Employment program has been accredited through the Commission for Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) since 2004. Supported Employment offers people with disabilities the chance to participate in a team process to identify and fulfill their employment dreams. Intensive training and follow-along support hours by our Supported Employment staff make it possible for individuals served to be successful. The Supported Employment program at 21 Plus is available to employers throughout Ocean County. In fact, employers can gain tax credits by employing individuals from our program. Be sure to ask our Supported Employment staff how you can gain a tax credit as an employer. If you are an Ocean County Resident eligible for services through DDD and are in need of a job or if you are an Ocean County Employer looking to hire great employees, please contact: Sarah Labore at latc21@21plus.org to get connected to our services. WE RISE BY LIFTING OTHERS 21 Plus, Inc. depends on volunteers in the community to tackle projects at our group homes. The funding we receive does not cover improvement and repair costs. Keeping up the appearance of our homes aligned with our neighbors helps eliminate the stigma that comes with opening a group home in a neighborhood. In 2019, our community volunteerism had an in-kind value of almost $20,000. We are also excited that all of our group homes have been adopted!

CAUSEWAY'S SUMMER IN WINTER CARNIVAL

Our 2nd “Summer in Winter Carnival” was a massive hit! We had so many wonderful non-profits show up and spread word of their cause. We wanted everyone to be able to come out and learn new information, donate their time, and just spread the word about all these great non-profits that do so much good in our community. We accomplished this with a fun, family friendly atmosphere where people enjoyed hanging out at. Just like last year, we had carnival games, boardwalk type food, a magic show, and various activities for children like face painting, arts and crafts, and much more. The non-profits that attended our first Summer in Winter Carnival all gave us great feedback! Many gained new volunteers or donations but what they really enjoyed was connecting with each other. They now have one another as resources to help those in need, which is incredible!

4 Causeway Gazette A MESSAGE FROM THE CAUSEWAY FAMILY SPRING 2020

To our Causeway Family, Like so many of you, we have spent the last several days and weeks learning about the coronavirus (COVID-19) and how it is impacting our world. For the Causeway Family of Dealerships, that means understanding how it affects our employees, customers and communities, and then making the necessary adjustments to our work and operations. We have one simple objective that guides us: keeping customers and our employees safe. This has been at the center of our conversations every step of the way. With that in mind, we have made several moves in our business in response to the threat of the coronavirus.

We will be requesting our employees to avoid handshaking for the time being, for everyone’s health and safety, because that is a priority here at Causeway. We are closely following the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) guidelines and recommendations on the steps we can take to help prevent the spread of the virus. We have shared specific instructions with our employees on the importance of washing their hands and staying home if they feel sick or are returning from an area of the world identified as posing a coronavirusrelated risk. Per CDC recommendations, we will ask employees who have traveled to such locations or have been exposed to others who have

traveled to such locations to self-quarantine for 14 days. A strict travel policy for our employees is in place, and we have canceled meetings with large gatherings, again to do what we can to help prevent the spread of the illness. If you don’t feel well, or choose not to visit one of our stores, of course we are ready to serve you at Causewaycars.com or call 609-597-8083.

CAUSEWAY FORD TURNS SHOWROOM INTO ART EXHIBIT

On Sunday, March 8th the Causeway Ford Dealership transformed its showroom from F-150s and Mustangs to a Community Performance and Art Exhibit. Over 400 students artwork was displayed in the form of two-dimensional art, and 3-D kinetic pieces in the form of mini-mobiles (maquettes) and nine individual largescale sculptures which combined to make one floor to ceiling mobile. If that was not enough, Lisa Willoughby performed an indoor kite fly while the sounds of the Southern Regional Honors Select Choir and String Ensemble filled the air. “It truly was a wonderful experience for our community and I’m honored that Causeway could be a part of it,” stated Joe Stroffolino from Causeway Ford.

NISSAN MAXIMA AND ALTIMA AWARDED TOP SAFETY PICK RATINGS FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT YEAR

2 RESCUED SEALS SHARE A MOMENT ON LONG BEACH ISLAND The Marine Mammal Stranding Center rescued two seals Saturday on Long Beach Island. Before they released them, the harp seal and grey seal shared a moment on the beach.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has announced its annual Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ ratings for 2020 with the Nissan Maxima and Altima taking their usual spots atop the Midsize Sedan category. Both vehicles include available Nissan Safety Shield® 360, a suite of six advanced driver-assist systems. Maxima, which earned a 2020 Top Safety Pick+ designation, has been on the list for five consecutive years as a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+. Altima has been a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick + every year since 2013. Both Nissan models have been awarded the IIHS awards when equipped with optional front crash prevention and specific headlights. The awards identify the best vehicle choices for safety within 13 vehicle size categories during a given year. Just 64 models were given the top safety designation for 2020. Last fall, Maxima and Altima were also rated top performers in IIHS pedestrian crash prevention testing. “Helping protect our customers while they are on the road is a key focus for all Nissan vehicles,” said Rob Warren, director, Sales and Marketing, Nissan North America, Inc. “Nissan Safety Shield 360 is a major part of that vision and we’re proud to see our vehicles recognized by IIHS against its rigorous testing criteria.”

Stranding Center personnel moved both seals to a more remote location because of increasing crowds. Although their crates were placed several yards apart, they sat together for several minutes on the beach before entering the water. “That was just coincidental,” said Bob Schoelkopf, the center’s stranding director. “They were both released at the same location. They normally go their own way and don’t interact at all.” Saturday wasn’t just unusual because it was leap day. It also involved a strange occurrence of three seals showing up on LBI the same day. The MMSC received reports of a harp seal at Beach Haven, a grey seal at Barnegat Light and another harp seal in Ship Bottom. Unfortunately, the seal in Ship Bottom died and was taken back to the MMSC. Seals tend to arrive on the Jersey Shore throughout winter. But they showed up later than usual last weekend.

Nissan Safety Shield 360 includes Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, High Beam Assist and Rear Automatic Braking. In addition to Safety Shield 360, Maxima and Altima also offer available Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC)

“Usually from the end of December and into February, we start getting them in,” Schoelkopf said. “But because of the weather, the animals stayed offshore or further to the north, and now they’re starting to show up.”

and Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR). Nissan’s innovative Intelligent Driver Alertness (I-DA) technology is standard on all grade levels.

The seal on the left in the photos is a male grey seal, who measured at 56 pounds and 41 inches long. He has the typical grey and black coloration of a male grey seal, with a bulky head and horse-like nose, the MMSC says.

For more information on the 2020 Nissan Maxima and Altima, along with the complete lineup of Nissan vehicles, please visit NissanNews.com.

The other is a male harp seal, measuring at 51.6 pounds and 37 inches long. He has a light-colored coat with dark spots and a small, spaniel-like face.

LINCOLN AVIATOR VS. CADILLAC XT6 COMPARISON: NOT EVEN CLOSE

SPRING 2020

Furry Friends

Who Need Fur-Ever Homes!

Courtesy of Motortrend.com I won’t waste your time. I’m not going to yank your chain. No dillydallying here, heaven forbid. If you’re shopping for an American three-row luxury SUV, it would be a regretful mistake to buy a Cadillac XT6 over the Lincoln Aviator.

These furry friends are provided to us by Friends of Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter.

If you are looking to adopt, have questions or want to volunteer please call:

609-978-0127

From a pricing perspective, they’re pretty even. Both the Aviator and XT6 carry starting prices in the low-$50,000 range. As tested, Lincoln’s three-row comes to $74,920 and Cadillac’s rings in at $73,040. Both cars have their strengths and weaknesses, but by almost every objective and subjective measure, the Aviator provides a superior luxury three-row experience. Here’s why.

or visit their website at: www.fosocas.org. Open daily 1-4 PM and 6:30 PM on Wednesday

Bruiser

Powertrain: Engine, Transmission, And MPG Both cars generate power with gasfueled aluminum V-6 engines, one forcefed (by two turbochargers) and the other naturally aspirated. The free-breathing powerplant lives under the hood of the Cadillac, and it’s the same 3.6-liter V-6 that General Motors defaults to in countless Chevy, Buick, and Cadillac vehicles. In this application, it makes 310 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with a nine-speed automatic.

hand, doesn’t have to work as hard, spin as fast, or generate as much noise and vibration to produce the same level of thrust. It just quietly churns away in the background and gets you up to speed.

AWD systems, but there’s an important difference between the bones of the Aviator and the XT6. The XT6 is based on a front-drive platform—it’s effectively a stretched Cadillac XT5—and a version of the chassis made its debut back in 2002.

The Aviator’s only platform-mate is the new Ford Explorer. For the past few decades, Lincolns have been little more than Fords with better leather seats. But this is a new Lincoln brand we’re talking about. Differentiation is their watchword. I defy you to find any semblance of downmarket content on the inside of the Aviator.

Stepping inside, it’s the Lincoln’s cabin we didn’t want to leave. Before you even start the car, you’re greeted by soft leather, convincingly Bentley-esque knurled metal-look control knobs, and impossibly comfortable 30-way adjustable massaging front seats. They sit a little high for my tastes, but once adjusted properly, the comfort is supreme. Basic seating controls are mounted on the door sill, Mercedes-style, but fine-tuning one of four lumbar support settings and choosing the pattern and intensity of your massage are delegated to a menu nonsensically buried in the last page of the infotainment screen.

The Lincoln is powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 cranking 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque, in the same state of tune as the engine motivating the Ford Explorer ST. A 10-speed auto handles gear-changing duties. But these are three-row family SUVs, not sports cars—does the power advantage matter? I assure you it does. The Aviator’s powerplant has higher peak numbers than the XT6’s, sure, but because it’s turbocharged, it produces more torque down low in the rev range. Say you want to pass someone on the highway. In the XT6, you’ll use most of the throttle and hear the growly V-6 spin all the way to its 7,100-rpm redline, where that engine makes all its power.

You select a gear in the Aviator by pressing one of four PRND buttons, like striking keys on a vehicular Steinway. The fully digital gauge cluster is clean and uncrowded. The heads-up display is wider, brighter, more informative, and displayed higher on the windshield (read: closer to your line of sight) than the HUD in the Cadillac.

The Aviator’s engine, on the other

Aviation Lessons It should be obvious by now why the Lincoln Aviator is a stronger three-row luxury SUV than the Cadillac XT6. Its powertrain is more capable, more refined, and just as efficient. Its interior is better designed and better executed, with materials of a higher standard of quality. It may not be as exciting to drive, but it’s remarkably more comfortable and can tow with the big boys.

Bruiser is 3 years old and is the handsome “blue” color of his breed. Bruiser is a friendly and high energy boy! He loves attention, and really enjoys playing with toys! Bruiser enjoys going for walks, but does tend to pull on the leash. He would benefit from a family that has experience with his breed that also has the time to continue to work on his training. Bruiser needs a home with older children because he is quite muscular and strong. Because of his youth his energy level might be too much for other dogs and cats as well. This handsome boy is vaccinated and neutered and available for adoption at the Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter in Manahawkin. Fuzzy is a 6 year old Black & White Tuxedo female who is currently in one of our loving foster homes waiting for a home of her own. She loves to be petted and loves to play and will follow her foster Mom everywhere looking for attention. She is spayed, up to date with vaccinations, tested negative for fiv and felv and microchipped. Fuzzy is available for adoption through the Friends of Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter. If you would like to meet this pretty girl, please fill out an on-line application that you can find on our website FOSOCAS.org and her foster Mom will be happy to set up a meet and greet in her home in Manahawkin.

But most important for a luxury car, the Aviator succeeds in elevating beyond its source material. The XT6 leaves the impression of a well-equipped Chevy in a new suit—the Aviator is a refined luxury machine that’s unrecognizable as the Explorer on which it’s based. Cadillac: You’ve got some work to do.

21 PLUS, From Page 1 The Blue Thong Jersey Blue Belles adopted our Mizzen Avenue group home ten years ago. They were celebrated at our annual Employee Appreciation Lunch. Habitat For Humanity Brush With Kindness sent volunteer groups to nine of our group homes to help out with yard clean ups, weeding and indoor painting. When we reached out to United Way to see if they knew anyone who could paint a room for us, they sent a group of volunteers from JCP&L. One of the volunteers enjoyed his time with us so much that he told his church about us, prompting

them to adopt our group home for their community reach and volunteerism! We are proud to support the groups that volunteer their time at our programs. On a sunny September day, a group of 21 Plus employees and participants took part in the Habitat For Humanity Walk To Build. Our adopt a home program was created to help us maintain the exteriors of our homes doing such things as yard clean up, weeding, planting flowers, mulching, etc.. We have service groups who “adopt” one of our group homes and come out 2-3 times each year to do Fall Clean up, Spring Clean up and all around beautification of our yards.

HYUNDAI SONATA NAMED AN AUTOTRADER 10 BEST CAR INTERIORS UNDER $50,000 cost less and give you more when it comes to cabin fit and finish. We placed the price cap for this list at $50,000, with many of the selected vehicles coming in well below that figure. You don’t necessarily have to spend a lot of money to get a nice interior.”

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata today was named one of Autotrader’s 10 Best Car Interiors Under $50,000 for 2020. The honor is the latest in a series of accolades for the eighth-generation Sonata, Hyundai’s longeststanding nameplate and most successful model. Considering how much time American drivers spend in their vehicles, Autotrader seeks to help car buyers look beyond outward appearances to find vehicles that also feature outstanding interiors.

IONIQ HYBRID BLUE AND IONIQ ELECTRIC AMONG TOP SCORES ON ACEEE’S GREENEST VEHICLES The 2020 Hyundai IONIQ Electric and the Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid Blue model were named to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy’s (ACEEE) list of “Greenest Vehicles of 2020.” In the growing, competitive green vehicle segment, each Hyundai vehicle’s life-time environmental impact was analyzed by ACEEE, scoring among a select group of standouts. “Hyundai’s global commitment to sustainability means meeting the needs of drivers who require highly efficient, low-emissions vehicles,” said Scott Margason, director, Product Planning,

Hyundai Motor America. “We are proud to have two of our vehicles make such a prominent list in the increasingly competitive green vehicle segment.”

from a life-cycle analysis that take into account the cost of emissions from driving, manufacturing, and eventual recycling of the vehicles.

The 2020 Greenest Vehicles list specifies the 12 most environmentallyfriendly nameplates available to consumers this model year. The Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid Blue model earned a Green Score of 66, tied for the highest on this year’s rankings. The IONIQ Electric was tied for third with a 65 Green Score. Only the top-scoring configuration of each nameplate is included in this list. Scores are based on the environmental damage index,

Since its launch in 2016, IONIQ has been the world’s first car planned from the start to offer three electrified powertrains – hybrid, plug-in hybrid and full electric. It was also Hyundai’s first alternative fuel vehicle engineered to provide outstanding efficiency while being fun-to-drive.

“We’re honored to have the Sonata named to Autotrader’s 10 Best Car Interiors Under $50,000 for 2020 list,” said Scott Margason, director, product planning, Hyundai Motor America. “This recognition by Autotrader magnifies consumer awareness of the Hyundai brand and our company’s commitment to making great products, both inside and out.”

“Most people spend several hours inside their vehicle each week, so interior features are extremely important when determining which new car to buy,” said Tara Trompeter, managing editor for Autotrader. “While you could shell out big money and get an interior that fits the price tag, a little research can reveal many new cars that
