OCEAN COUNTY: ELDERLY HOMEBOUND RESIDENTS IN NEED OF ASSISTANCE Help Us Help Those Who Can’t Help Themselves!
Many elderly and frail senior citizens in Ocean County are homebound and needing assistance for some of the simplest staples in life. “What was once available to many of our frailest seniors through their caregivers and family, has now become difficult for them to obtain during a time of social distancing and stay at home mandates,” said Ocean County Freeholder Director Joseph H. Vicari, chairman of Senior Services. “Now, more than ever, I am asking for help for our seniors.” With assistance from Causeway Family of Dealerships in Stafford Township, Community Services Inc., Ocean County’s senior meal provider and the Ocean County Office of Senior Services will be collecting everyday items for seniors receiving meals under the county’s home delivered meals program.
The list of items most needed are: • Toilet paper • Paper towels • Tissues • Disinfecting Wipes • Hand Sanitizer • Soap
All items must be new and in their manufacturers packaging. “I want to thank Dave Wintrode from Causeway and all the staff
at the dealerships for providing us with locations for donation collection sites,” Vicari said. “Our seniors are fearing they will run out of essential household items like toilet paper and other necessities as the coronavirus outbreak continues. “So many of these seniors are in their 80s and beyond,” Vicari said. “They are scared, lonely and anxious and even if we can do just a small part to help alleviate these concerns, I know it would mean the world to them.”
Starting on Thursday, April 2, a Meals on Wheels of Ocean County van will be parked at Causeway Ford and Lincoln Service Department, Route 72, Manahawkin. Individuals can drop off items from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Donated items should be marked for “Meals on Wheels.” Residents who are donating items should practice social distancing when dropping items off. “I would suggest to our residents that would like to donate, that if you pick up some extra items at the food store, drop by one of the designated car dealerships with the donation after you have finished your shopping,” Vicari said. “I do not want anyone to leave their homes just to drop off a donation. “While we have to do things differently, we can still help those who are in need,” Vicari said. Sigurdson, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels of Ocean County, said they are delivering meals daily to more than 1,000 seniors living in Ocean County. “This is so important for these seniors to get these meals and a few moments of social contact with someone,” Sigurdson said. “Our drivers are letting us know our seniors are in need of basic household items.

It’s why our work is so critically important. Meals on Wheels allow elderly home bound seniors to continue living in the environment of their choice - at home. How Meals on Wheels works: We deliver hot, nutritious meals to our seniors’ homes Monday through Friday and for our most frail and vulnerable, weekends and holidays. All our menus are approved by a qualified nutritionist and provide at least one-third of the daily dietary recommendation set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Nutrition education and counseling are also provided under this program. Please note: we do not provide meals for special diets. Eligibility Criteria: The demand for Meals on Wheels is extremely high, and increases each year. As a result, we carefully review each case to ensure our limited resources go to those who need it most. Dear Friends, In an effort to communicate to everyone who supports Fulfill, formerly The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, we want to share all that we have been doing to be pro-active, as well as reactive, to the ever-changing COVID-19 health crisis.
As the Coronavirus keeps schools closed, children can tune in to NJTV to watch lessons from teachers around the state. (Shutterstock / Alena Ozerova) As the novel Coronavirus keeps schools closed, kids will soon have another way to learn from home. New Jersey teachers will begin teaching lessons Monday on a new NJTV program: "NJTV Learning Live." Each weekday, NJTV will offer four programs for grades 3 through 6. Third-grade instruction begins at 9 a.m., fourth-grade programming is at 10 a.m., fifth grade is 11 a.m. and sixth-grade instruction begins at noon. Subjects will include English language arts, math, science, social studies, and "specials" such as art, music or physical education. Teachers will record each hour long segment from their homes. The New Jersey Education Association and Department of Education initially found 200 educators who volunteered, and they encourage teachers to participate. HELPING FRIENDS HELP THE HOMELESS PETS
We have seen an unprecedented demand for food as our neighbors lose their jobs and businesses are forced to close to keep the virus from spreading. In the last ten days alone, Fulfill has provided more than 115,000 meals through our Crisis Relief Box program to our pantries and shelters - a program we just created to respond to these historic times. We have also partnered with restaurants at the Jersey Shore to help meet the growing demand for food. Fulfill is paying each restaurant a small stipend of $5 per boxed meal. This helps keep restaurant workers "off the line" and helps us serve our community when it needs us more than ever. Meals are being delivered to schools for pick-up by families. The school districts include: Asbury Park, Belmar, Toms River, Freehold Borough, and Long Branch. Meals in this program are also going to children through the YMCA in both Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Others serve soup kitchens, senior citizens and shelters. Fulfill has also set up a Quick Response Team to rapidly address any cases of COVID-19 that may appear within our network. This team has already been put into action when a staff member at a Freehold-area pantry tested positive for the virus. The facility was shut down to be properly sanitized and the Quick Response Team immediately moved food distribution to another location so children in need would not miss a single meal. We’ve had to hire a nurse, additional warehouse help and cleaning staff to keep up with the volume. The honoree of Fulfill’s gala, which has been moved to June, also graciously installed a new air purification system in the building to help keep our employees and volunteers safe. Thank you to David Indursky, the CEO of ENCON, for helping us take that precautionary measure. These are challenging times, and so far, the spike in demand is costing Fulfill approximately $200,000 per week. We expect it to continue to rise as the virus affects more families in our community. Before the outbreak of COVID-19 in the United States, the Board of FOSOCAS (Friends of Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter) decided to launch a March Madness Membership Drive to coincide with the basketball tournament. Membership to our group is vital to our mission "to assist and reduce the population of homeless companion animals in Southern Ocean County, and to promote shelter adoptions through publicity and public relations." GIVE NOW Lemon Sheet Cake 1 package lemon cake mix (regular size) 4 large eggs, room temperature 1 can (15-3/4 ounces) lemon pie filling 3 ounces cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup butter, softened 2 cups confectioners' sugar 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 to 2 tablespoons 2% milk Colored sugar, optional
1 In a large bowl, beat the cake mix and eggs until well blended. Fold in pie filling. 2 Spread into a greased 15x10x1-in. baking pan. Bake at 350° until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 18-20 minutes. Cool on a wire rack. 3 In a small bowl, beat the cream cheese, butter and confectioners' sugar until smooth. Stir in vanilla and enough milk to reach desired consistency. Spread over cake. If desired, sprinkle with colored sugar Store in the refrigerator. Slow-Cooker Mac and Cheese 1 package (16 ounces) elbow macaroni 1/2 cup butter, melted 4 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided 1 can (12 ounces) evaporated milk
1 can (10-3/4 ounces) condensed cheddar cheese soup, undiluted 1 cup 2% milk 2 large eggs, beaten 1/8 teaspoon paprika
1 Cook macaroni according to package directions; drain. Place in a 5-qt. slow cooker; add butter. In a large bowl, mix 3 cups cheese, evaporated milk, condensed soup, 2% milk and eggs. Pour over macaroni mixture; stir to combine. Cook, covered, on low for 3-1/2 to 4 hours or until a thermometer reads at least 160°. 2 Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Cook, covered, on low until cheese is melted, 15-20 minutes longer. Sprinkle with paprika.

BARNEGAT MAN 3D PRINTS MASKS FOR FIGHT AGAINST CORONAVIRUS The Coronavirus has Rietmann worried for people in all corners of his life. His friend and next-door neighbor is a detective in Freehold. Police duties sometimes put officers in more vulnerable positions to contract the virus. State officials reported Monday that 288 members of law enforcement have tested positive for the Coronavirus, while 2,477 selfquarantined.
By Josh Bakan, Patch.com Gary Rietmann began 3D printing four years ago. He and his son — then around 10 years old — created fidget spinners, which his son would sell. Then Rietmann, of Barnegat, began printing fishing lures. His friend developed the idea of glow-in-the-dark tubes for surf fishermen, and they made hundreds. Rietmann's newest venture is about saving lives. The Barnegat man uses his 3D printer to develop masks that protect against the novel coronavirus. Rietmann gives them to medical staff, law enforcement and first responders.
Rietmann is also from Paramus, which has reported 106 positive cases as of Thursday afternoon. Bergen County has reported 4,099 positive cases — more than any county in New Jersey — including 120 deaths.
He created a GoFundMe so he could purchase new 3D printers and create more masks. Rietmann builds custom operating systems for the Navy. Before the virus changed every corner of American life, he tracked the number of cases in China last February and bought 90 days of food for his family. "I was somewhat well-prepared, but it's a scary thing," Rietmann said. "With us running out of supplies — masks, ventilators — it's pretty freaking scary." Friends told him that police officers were running out of masks. So on top of his fulltime job, he's shifted his energy to creating as many masks as possible.
"It's impacted a lot of my friends," he said. "One of my friends and her mom were in the hospital last week. She was released on Saturday, and her mom died on Sunday." Rietmann began looking for open-source mask designs — 3D-print designs that are free to use as long as it's not for commercial purposes. The first design he tried required heating it up and gluing it together in his home. So he tried another, but he didn't like its filter. So Rietmann took the filter from the first and added it to the second design. The masks are made of PLA, an organic
plastic. A hospital will put them through their test machine and determine if they need modifications. "Are these masks as good as N95, no," he wrote on the GoFundMe "But are they better than dust and fabric masks, most likely." Rietmann can only print 10 to 12 masks per day with his Ender 5 Plus. But he has already received a few donated printers, along with donations to help him purchase more.
Additionally, his cousin is sick. He quarantined in his basement, and his wife is taking care of him, so Rietmann is worried about her too. But Rietmann has several people helping with creating masks. Will Fei, who works for Comfort Zone Heating, is creating air filters for the masks. WHERE TO DONATE BLOOD IN BARNEGAT AMID CORONAVIRUS CRISIS It remains safe to donate blood, and the need is great following the cancellation of thousands of blood drives.
The U.S. blood supply is facing a unique and unprecedented shortage in the wake of the ongoing new coronavirus pandemic. Donations from healthy people in Barnegat, Manahawkin and other communities are needed now more than ever to avoid another health care crisis, according to two of the nation's leading blood banks. Why is it unprecedented? Unlike most crises, which tend to impact the blood supply in specific cities or regions, the coronavirus outbreak is affecting the supply for the entire nation.

NEW JERSEY WAWAS SET ASIDE HOUR FOR AT-RISK SHOPPERS AMID CORONAVIRUS
Wawa will designate 2-3 p.m. each day to accommodate high-risk customers.
All Wawa stores in New Jersey will designate an hour each day for shoppers at high risk of the new coronavirus. Wawa asked that all other customers avoid the store from 2-3 p.m. each day while high-risk individuals shop. The change came shortly after Governor Phil Murphy ordered all shoppers in essential businesses to wear a face mask.
The American Red Cross said an estimated 2,500 blood drives were canceled in March due to the new coronavirus outbreak, leading to a severe blood shortage.
In March, the American Red Cross said more than 2,500 blood drives were canceled nationwide because of concerns about gathering in groups at workplaces, colleges and schools. The organization also estimates the cancellations resulted in 86,000 fewer blood donations.
Despite fear over donating blood amid the coronavirus pandemic, it remains safe to do so, according to America's Blood Centers, whose facilities — in addition to those operated by the Red Cross — are implementing increased social distancing measures and infection control protocols. A Wawa store in Cherry Hill temporarily closed Wednesday after a worker tested positive for the virus. Employees in at least 36 different ShopRite locations have tested positive for the virus, according to nj.com. A Trader Joe’s worker in New York, a greeter at a Giant store in Maryland, and two Walmart employees from the same Chicago-area store have died from COVID-19, the Washington Post reports. Wawa announced last month that it would shut down self-serve drinks, individually bag bakery items and deep clean each day.
