Causeway 5K Raises Over $27K for Fulfill
On October 25th we held our 3rd Annual Causeway 5K at Southern Regional High School in Manahawkin. We had over 100 registered runners/walkers and 30 Sponsors! The Causeway 5K was organized by Causeway employees: Chad Scanlon (Assistant Inventory Manager and overall 5K Winner), Kaitlyn Strohmeier (Digital Marketing Assistant) and Joe Stroffolino (Director of Advertising and Marketing). We were able to raise $13,670 for Fulfill! (Formerly known as The Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties). Causeway President, Dave Wintrode, kindly matched that amount bringing the grand total to $27,340! Every dollar donated to Fulfill provides three meals to those in need. This means we were able to provide our neighbors with 82,020 meals! This really put a dent in addressing the food insecurity issue right here in our community! Our very first Causeway 5K was held back in October of 2018, which raised $3,000. Dave Wintrode kindly matched that amount bringing the grand total to

We had set a goal to beat the funds raised in 2018 and did just that! We were able to raise $5,743.50 and once again, Dave Wintrode kindly matched that amount, bringing the grand total to $11,487! We want to send a special thank you to your wonderful sponsors:

CAUSEWAY JOINS OPERATION WARM UP NJ
The Causeway Family of Dealerships and six other southern New Jersey philanthropic organizations have joined forces with Operation Warm, Better Education for Kids, Inc. and Fulfill to distribute 3,200 new winter coats to children in Monmouth and Ocean Counties through “Operation Warm Up Jersey Shore”. Operation Warm Up Jersey Shore’s funding partners include The Citta Foundation; Community Foundation of South Jersey; Grunin Foundation; OceanFirst Foundation; Pascale Sykes Foundation; United Way of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, and the Wintrode Family Foundation with 100% match funding provided by Better Education for Kids, Inc. and coats provided by Operation Warm, a national nonprofit dedicated to providing warmth, confidence and hope for children in need through the gift of brand-new coats.
Fulfill, formerly the Foodbank of Monmouth & Ocean Counties, is the local distribution partner and hosted the two drive-thru Coat Giving Events which were on November 7th and November 14th. Pre-packaged coats, sizes 2T-2XL, were distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis, while supplies last. The children were present in the vehicle to receive a coat. In addition, Fulfill provided each household with a family meal kit including hot chocolate and cookies. "Our food bank feeds 70,000 children at the Jersey Shore. We are grateful to be part of this partnership that now allows us to give those kids warmth this winter, in addition to full bellies. Being warm and full helps children maintain good health while providing comfort, safety, and overall well-being," said New Jersey's former Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno, the CEO and President of Fulfill.

About Better Education for Kids, Inc.: Better Education for Kids, Inc. (B4K) is an independent voice for commonsense education reform in New Jersey. B4K stands for the proposition that the first priority of the New Jersey public school system must be the best interests of New Jersey students, not the special interests that dominate the status quo. To this end, every class must have an effective teacher and every school an effective principal, and teachers and principals should be given the necessary training and resources to be effective. Public policy and all administrative and personnel policies should support these goals. Parents must be empowered with access to data and other information to hold educators, leaders, and elected officials accountable for their performance.

Step 2: For the crust, beat the butter and granulated sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, until light, approximately 3 minutes. Add the eggs and the vanilla and mix well. Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix the dry ingredients into the batter with the mixer on low speed until just combined. Press the dough evenly into an ungreased 18 by 12 by 1-inch baking sheet, making an edge around the outside. It will be very sticky; sprinkle the dough and your hands lightly with flour. Bake for 15 minutes, until the crust is set but not
browned. Allow to cool. Step 3: For the topping, combine the butter, honey, brown sugar, and zests in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan. Cook over low heat until the butter is melted, using a wooden spoon to stir. Raise the heat and boil for 3 minutes. Remove from the heat. Stir in the heavy cream and pecans. Pour over the crust, trying not to get the filling between the crust and the pan. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the filling is set. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until cold. Cut into bars and serve. foodnetwork.com

He is friendly, curious, energetic, happy, and a fun loving 12 week old boy and at the perfect age for adoption. He has been fostered with his three sisters but he also keeps himself entertained independently. He loves to play with wand type and soft ball toys but his favorite is a rolled-up piece of paper. He is neutered, has had age appropriate vaccinations, tested negative for Fiv and Felv and microchipped. He was raised in a loving foster home on Long Beach Island. If you would like to meet Sylvester please fill out an application on line at fosocas.org and his foster Mom will contact you for a meet and greet on Long Beach Island.

TAX CREDIT FOR TRUCKS
Although no direct tax credits are available for the business ownership of trucks, a small business can use the tax rule that allows 100 percent deduction of a new truck purchase if the truck is a necessary business expense. The Section 179 tax write-off is the one alternative to buying a truck and then taking depreciation write-offs over many years. Taking a full deduction saves thousands in taxes this year compared to depreciating a truck. The Section 179 deduction lets you pay for part of the cost of a new truck with the taxes saved by deducting the cost.
Section 179 Deduction The Section 179 tax deduction allows the 100 percent write-off of qualifying equipment purchased for business use. Qualifying equipment includes business machines, office equipment, computer software and furniture, as well as vehicles that qualify for the write-off. For 2012, the maximum Section 179 deduction was $139,000. The maximum a business could spend on qualifying equipment during the year and still take the full write-off was $560,000.
Qualifying Trucks The types of vehicles that qualify for a full deduction are those with a gross vehicle weight rating -- GVWR -- of between 6,000 and 14,000 pounds and a separate cargo area at least 6 feet long. Trucks that meet these criteria include long bed pickups, 3/4 ton or larger trucks and cargo vans. Passenger vans that can seat nine or more behind the driver also qualify. Other vehicles purchased for business use may qualify for a partial deduction. These exceptions are primarily smaller passenger vehicles or cargo vans.
Claiming the Deduction The Section 179 deduction is claimed by completing Internal Revenue Service Form 4562 and attaching the form to a business tax return. The deduction is taken on a per item basis, and you can claim the Section 179 deduction for one purchase and not claim it for another. Say your business purchased two trucks during the year that would qualify for the deduction. You can choose to claim one as a full write-off and take depreciation on the other to spread out the write-off.
Check for Changes The IRS changes the Section 179 limits every year and may make adjustments to what can be claimed. For example, when the rule first came into existence, a business owner could buy a large sport utility vehicle for business use and take a full write-off. SUVs no longer qualify for a full Section 179 deduction. If you missed the deduction for trucks purchased in past years, you can amend business tax returns back to 2007 to add the Form 4562 and claim the deduction.

FORD LEADS THE CHARGE FOR E-TRANSIT Ford, the world’s cargo van leader, introduces the 2022 E-Transit van, a smart workhorse that will offer customers enhanced productivity enabled by its fully electric powertrain, software solutions, services and Pro Power Onboard options. “Ford is North America and Europe’s commercial truck and van leader, so the transition of fleet vehicles to zero emissions, especially for the fast-growing lastmile delivery segment, is critical to achieve our carbon neutrality goal by 2050,” said Jim Farley, Ford president and CEO. “Ford is ready to lead the charge, starting with the allelectric Transit and all-electric F-150 on the way. This is good for the planet and a huge advantage for customers to help lower their operating costs and provide connected fleet management technologies that will help their businesses.” The all-new E-Transit is backed by Ford’s powerhouse network of 1,800-plus global commercial vehicle dealers, including 645 commercial vehicle centers across the U.S. – about 90 percent of which are electric vehicle-certified – for easy sales and service.
E-Transit offers the same interior cargo dimensions and standard mounting points for continued integration with hundreds of upfitters and vehicle modifiers worldwide who provide compatible racks, bins and accessories on gas-powered Transit. The majority of U.S. Transit vehicles sold last year were upfitted, and Ford continues to provide the same upfit financing support for van customers, including those who purchase or lease. With 13 upfitters located conveniently within 30 miles of the assembly plant, customers get fast delivery to the upfitter of their choice right when they order their van, removing the need for an upfit
Courtesy of Ford after delivery and helping them get on the road quickly. While most newcomers in the van business are still building prototypes, developing testing protocols and addressing difficult usage conditions, Ford’s commercial vehicle ecosystem is expanding to include electric vehicle monitoring software and connected solutions for fleets to seamlessly integrate into day-to-day operations. “We are doubling down on software and digital services to help our fleet customers grow and more efficiently run their businesses,” said Farley.

NISSAN MAKES SAFETY SHIELD 360 STANDARD ON 10 MODELS Advanced driver assistance systems can significantly reduce crashes according to leading safety advocates, and inexperienced teen drivers face added crash risks. To help drivers avoid crashes, Nissan will offer Safety Shield 360, a suite of six active safety technologies, as standard equipment on 10 models beginning in 2021. October 18-24 is National Teen Driver Safety Week, an annual reminder for parents to have conversations with teens about rules to stay safe behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk of motor vehicle crashes is higher among teens aged 16-19 than among any other age group; the risk is particularly high during the first months driving. “Offering these safety technologies as standard equipment on 10 of our most popular models is an important step forward,” said Andy Christensen, senior manager and lead technology expert of Intelligent Transportation System Research, Nissan Technical Center North America. “This added layer of protection can help keep young drivers safe especially as they are getting used to being on busy roads.” Advanced driver assistance technology included in Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 can help to reduce crashes, which may be attributable to driver inexperience. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, vehicles equipped with
Nissan Safety Shield 360 includes six advanced systems AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING WITH PEDESTRIAN DETECTION: Uses forward-facing radar and camera technology to track vehicles and crossing pedestrians, can give audible and visual warnings and apply braking to help avoid or reduce the severity of frontal collisions LANE DEPARTURE WARNING: Can alert driver of drifting from lane with a visual warning and audible or haptic signals HIGH BEAM ASSIST: Automatically switches to low beam headlights when it detects a vehicle ahead and turns the high beams back on when appropriate BLIND SPOT WARNING: Helps spot vehicles in driver’s blind spot areas REAR CROSS TRAFFIC ALERT: Can warn the driver about detected approaching vehicles when reversing out of a parking spot REAR AUTOMATIC BRAKING: Helps detect stationary objects when backing up and, if necessary, applies the brakes to help avoid a collision. Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking experience a 56 percent reduction in crashes with injuries. IIHS also reports that back-up crashes went down by 78 percent in vehicles equipped with Rear Automatic Braking and by 22 percent in vehicles with Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Nissan currently offers Safety Shield
360 standard on Sentra, LEAF, Maxima, Kicks, Rogue Sport and TITAN. Safety Shield 360 will also be standard on 2021 Rogue and on three additional models to
be announced in the coming months. The all-new 2020 Sentra and 2021 Rogue both have the most standard safety features in their respective classes.

FULFILL LAUNCHES GROUNDBREAKING “BENEFITS BUS”
A large crowd of community leaders, state and local officials, and members of the community gathered for the groundbreaking launch of Fulfill’s Benefits Bus in Asbury Park. The first-in the nation benefits station on wheels brings services directly to people in need “Right Where They Are”, allowing Fulfill’s Resource Connections Team to meet with clients in a COVID safe way. The Benefits Bus is fully outfitted with three socially distant workstations with plexiglass protection. A “slide” mechanism on the bus makes the space wider once the bus is parked to provide at least six feet between the workstations. It is also equipped with a ventilation system, running water, heat, a restroom, and a chair lift. Team members register families for SNAP (food stamps), affordable health care, and Medicaid. They also assist with tax preparation, affordable housing applications, budgeting and money management, utility expenses, and senior services.
“Fulfill’s mission is to end hunger in our community. But simply feeding the hungry does not address the long-term root of hunger. We believe connecting our neighbors in need to services that can improve their overall situation is key to breaking the cycle of poverty, and as such, hunger. Many of our clients do not drive, and there is no public transportation to our building, so it is crucial that we bring these services to their doorstep while keeping everyone safe,” said Fulfill CEO and President Kim Guadagno, the former Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey. Feeding America CEO Claire BabineauxFontenot addressed the crowd via Zoom from a jumbotron screen. “As more people are turning to food banks for help, it is
Services’ assistance programs that help families stay fed, safe, and healthy.”
Courtesy of fulfillnj.org imperative that we connect them to all the resources available to get them back on their feet quickly. We are excited to join Fulfill today to launch the Benefits Bus and reach as many families as possible,” said BabineauxFontenot. Fulfill was able to purchase and retrofit the bus thanks to a Feeding America COVID relief grant. Carole Johnson, the Commissioner of New Jersey’s Department of Human Services, was in attendance at the launch and spoke about how the Benefits Bus would help families. “These are challenging times for New Jerseyans, which is why Fulfill’s Benefits Bus is a game-changer in meeting people where they are and helping to connect families to food assistance, medical assistance and much more,” Commissioner Johnson said. “NJ Human Services will continue to use all available levers to get as much assistance to families as possible, but we can only do that in partnership with community leaders like Fulfill. Thanks to former Lieutenant Governor Guadagno, the Fulfill SNAP outreach team, and the frontline workforce that works every day to not only meet families’ emergency food needs, but to enroll folks in benefit programs that can offer consistent help. The Benefits Bus is a creative way to increase access to the vital Human

AS THANKSGIVING APPROACHES, NJ FOOD BANKS NEED YOUR HELP With the pandemic and unemployment, food pantries across New Jersey have been seeing an increased demand for supplies since the spring. But with Thanksgiving coming up in a couple of weeks, as new coronavirus cases and hospitalizations surge, demand is now shooting through the roof. Carlos Rodriguez, president of the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, said they have been buying and stockpiling additional supplies for the past few months. “It’s part of just being ready for any of the many changes that this pandemic has introduced our way,” he said. Earlier this year, when businesses began shutting down, requests for food assistance increased by at
least 40% compared to last year. That number is expected to shoot past 50% between now and the end of the year.
“These are the people we’re beginning to see now, in tears, upset, crying because they don’t have a livelihood. They’ve never been to a pantry, they don’t know how to ask for help,” she said.
Rodriguez said because of the pandemic, New Jersey is now estimated to have close to an additional half a million food-insecure residents, on top of the 900,000 who faced food insecurity before the health emergency began. “What we’ve done, first and foremost, is make sure we’ve got enough food on hand to be able to make it available to our partners,” he said. The nonprofit opened an auxiliary warehouse to stockpile that extra food. Rodriguez suggested as Thanksgiving Day approaches, people should consider donating - either food, money or time - to their local
