2020 A Year Like No Other

A

s we approach the end of 2020, a year like no other, we want to share a recap of what our year entailed. Like anyone else, we entered the year hoping for a prosperous and healthy 2020. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. We started 2020 with a new yearlong campaign, “CauseWheels Vehicle Donation Program”. We had a plan to donate a vehicle to one non-profit each month. The pandemic slightly affected this but we pushed through. Helping these community organizations was even more impactful with the advent of COVID. January Winner: Ocean County YMCA

For 50 years, the Ocean County YMCA has been transforming the way Ocean County residents live their lives through a commitment to fostering youth development, supporting healthy living initiatives, and promoting a sense of social responsibility within the community. Every day, the Y works side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. For more information on the Ocean County YMCA call them at (732) 341-9622 or visit their website: www.ocymca.org.

Main Street Alliance Church has been serving the community in numerous ways for the past three years, and offers its building to our community organizations at no charge! If you have any questions or would like to know more about how to get involved at Main Street, please contact Anna Sonnichsen at anna.sonnichsen@ gmail.com or call (609) 597-7177.

LETTER FROM FAMILY PROMISE OF SOUTHERN OCEAN COUNTY'S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Family Promise of Southern Ocean County is always growing and changing every year to best serve the homeless children and their families across the county. We have been able to provide families not just a warm bed to sleep in and food in their bellies, but also a chance to learn how to rebuild after the storms in their lives. But when COVID-19 struck, it changed everything. Our hospitality network was forced to pull back; families needed safe housing, food, and childcare more than ever. We Elizabeth Golla, changed tactics, Executive Director moving from our for Family Promise regular rotational of Southern Ocean shelter program, to County running full speed ahead through this pandemic. Pulling up our sleeves and putting on our masks, we became frontline workers ourselves. We were in contact with the families we were serving, making sure they still had food, diapers, or medicine. We were doing everything we could to make sure our community wasn’t overlooked and continue the mission of Family Promise. The most significant element of our pandemic response was expanding our services. We are not just a sheltering program any longer, we have expanded our focus to assist families who are at risk of losing their homes with the Anchors to Stay Prevention Program. Through the prevention program, we have provided financial aid for rent, mortgages, and security deposits to eligible families throughout Ocean County. The shelter and prevention programs served over 80 families this year, and we provided aid to an additional 630 individuals; people who wouldn’t have had anywhere else to turn for help without Family Promise of Southern Ocean County.

SOUTHERN OCEAN MEDICAL CENTER AMONG NATION’S TOP PERFORMING FOR TREATMENT OF HEART ATTACKS

Hackensack Meridian Southern Ocean Medical Center has received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry Silver Performance Achievement Award for 2020. Southern Ocean Medical Center is one of only 124 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor. Based on the drastic increases we saw this year in Ocean County, we are anticipating seeing five times the number of families to be in need in 2021. We’re preparing for this coming year by putting the infrastructure in place to increase the number of families we can serve through the Anchors to Stay Prevention Program, shelter more homeless families, and increase our outreach across the community. Our goal is to be the beacon of light for families who are at risk of losing their homes and continuing to find new ways to bridge the gaps for those who cannot get assistance anywhere else. As we prepare for many more families in need of our programs in 2021, we need help from people like you. Family Promise of Southern Ocean County is completely reliant on charitable donations to be able to continue to provide services like the Anchors to Stay Prevention Program to all of Ocean County. We were able to do so much in the face of this difficult year, you can donate to help us continue our mission of helping children and their families stay safely in their homes online at www.familypromisesoc.org/donate. Thank you for bringing so much hope and happiness to the children, families, and essential workers we serve. Together, we can end family homelessness. Because every child deserves a home.

The award recognizes Southern Ocean Medical Center’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that Southern Ocean Medical Center has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations. “I am proud of our cardiac team who is dedicated to improving the quality of care for patients experiencing a heart attack,” said Michele Morrison, MPH, BSHA, RN, chief hospital executive, Southern Ocean Medical Center. “The American College of Cardiology’s performance achievement award

is testament to the level of safety and quality of cardiac care being provided to patients in our community.” To receive the Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry Silver Performance Achievement Award, Southern Ocean Medical Center has demonstrated sustained achievement in the Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry for four consecutive quarters during 2019 and performed with distinction in specific performance measures. Full participation in the registry engages hospitals in a robust quality improvement process using data to drive improvements in adherence to guideline recommendations and overall quality of care provided to heart attack patients. “This is an outstanding achievement for Southern Ocean Medical Center,” said Kenneth N. Sable, M.D. MBA, FACEP, regional president, southern market, Hackensack Meridian Health. “Sustained achievement in the Chest Pain -MI Registry demonstrates dedication and commitment to provide the best treatment for patients based on clinical guidelines.”

Southern Ocean Medical Center COVID-19 Update Hackensack Meridian Palisades Medical Center and its dedicated physicians, nurses and staff are safely and effectively providing high-quality, compassionate care. Given the rampant community spread of COVID-19 in New Jersey, following is an update for patients and physicians on COVID-19 cases at Hackensack Meridian Palisades Medical Center: • There are currently 1,560 COVID-19 hospitalizations in North Jersey. Hackensack Meridian Palisades Medical Center currently has 35 COVID-19 patients, or 2% of all North Jersey hospitalizations. Two-thirds of the beds are non-COVID-19 cases. • The infection control team is confident that the COVID-19 cluster, identified the week of November 12, is isolated and has not resulted in any new cases. There are approximately three dozen team members out of 1,265 who are out of work due to either a positive COVID-test or because they were in contact with someone who had COVID. This number fluctuates daily. • There is no evidence of transmission from team members to patients, or vice versa. Rigorous contact tracing and testing are being conducted daily. • The hospital continues to be adequately staffed and daily reviews are conducted to safely redeploy team members where care is needed most. Staff from non-emergent health care procedures have been deployed to support COVID-19 efforts. *All data is as of 12/7/20. For most up to date information, check with your local government

Here’s what she said; “GMA was an awesome experience where we were able to all come together as an emergency department and have some fun during a crazy and scary time! Our ED is a family! And our family came together to do something amazing during this horrible time! We wanted to make sure everyone knew we would and will never give up on this fight!”

Safety technologies featured in new Hyundai vehicles By Jay Halliday of Causeway In this article, I am going to continue the discussion on Safety Technologies built into vehicles, this month is the newest edition to Causeway, Hyundai. Hyundai has come such a long way the past couple of years. If you haven’t looked at a Hyundai recently, you really need to check them out. The vehicles they make not only look really good, they are very safe and full of tech! Forward Collision –Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection This tech uses the front camera and radar to detect a vehicle or pedestrian in your path, it warns you of a collision as well. If you keep going, the vehicle will apply the brakes automatically and stop you before you get into an accident.

you use is the remote for the vehicle. This is a system you really need to see in person. Safe Exit Warning This great innovation uses the blind spot monitoring to alert your passengers of an oncoming vehicle approaching from behind. Lane Following Assist (LFA) LFA detects the road markers with a front mounted camera (right by the rear view mirror), it will than assist the driver to help keep the vehicle in the middle of the lane. Rear Occupant Alert This is one of those alerts that really helps that one time you need it. It reminds you to check the backseat area to ensure a child of pet isn’t still in the back seat after you park the vehicle.

Remote Smart Parking Assist This amazing system allows you to exit the vehicle and park itself into a parking space, all

Highway Drive Assist Driving on the highway is one of the most boring (in my opinion) things you can do in

a vehicle. This system works with the Smart Cruise Control and Lane Following Assist. This is actively keep you in the middle of the lane and at the right distance behind the car ahead. It will even keep you driving at the right speeds based on GPS and physical signs the camera picks up. Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist Basically this system will tell you if someone or vehicle goes behind you when you are backing up and will automatically apply the brakes if needed. High Beam Assist This system will automatically turn on and off the high beams if no cars are detected in the front camera. Driver Attention Warning If you start dozing off or wandering around in or out of the lane, it will alert you with a sound and warning message on the display.

If you start to wander in your lane without using turn signals, it will apply audio and visual cues. If you keep going it will even correct your steering to get you back in the lane. Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go When using your Cruise Control, it will use the front radar to maintain a safe distance from the car ahead. When you slow down to 6 mph or less, it will automatically turn off. Don’t worry because once the vehicle in front move within 3 seconds the system will stay engaged and speed back up. Just like always, each vehicle may vary depending on the model.
