TUCKERTON SEAPORT RECEIVES CAUSEWAY’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY GRANT By Kaitlyn Strohmeier

In Celebration of The Causeway Family of Dealerships 50th anniversary, we continue with our yearlong campaign - Causeway’s 50 Golden Acts of Good - to help our neighbors and positively impact Ocean County. Anchoring this campaign is the Grant Giveaway program, through which Causeway awards a $10,000 grant to one Ocean County nonprofit every month, from January through November of 2019, culminating next December with the award of a New Ford Transit Connect Van. We are proud to announce our August $10,000 grant winner, the Tuckerton Seaport. Originally known as the Barnegat Bay Decoy and Baymen’s Museum, the Tuckerton Seaport & Baymen’s Museum has evolved into a coastal cultural destination located along historic Tuckerton Creek in Tuckerton, New Jersey. Tuckerton Seaport’s 40acre site includes 17 historic and recreated buildings connected by a boardwalk, wetlands nature trail, two houseboats, a decoy gallery, a working boatworks building in which restoration of sneakbox designs of the Barnegat Bay occurs, a historic marine railway, decoy carving workshops and the recreated Tucker’s Island Lighthouse. Daily demonstrators and traditional artists bring the Jersey Shore’s rich coastal heritage to life. The Seaport will be celebrating 20 years in 2020. The Tuckerton Seaport hosts about 6,000 school kids per year! They will be using this grant to upkeep their new ferry and help schools with field trips to the Seaport. The new ferry not only provides transportation to and from the Seaport, but is a great learning tool. They call it the “floating classroom”. This ferry started its boat tours in 2018 and is always sold out!

Giving to the Tuckerton Seaport

Tuckerton Seaport, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization, relies on the generosity and support of the local community to continue to increase its impact each year. We appreciate all investments of time and funding to maintain and improve Seaport programs and facilities, allowing the Seaport to continue to inspire children and families with the history, heritage, artistry, and environment of the Jersey Shore. Docents/Tour Leaders

Docent might sound unfamiliar to you, as it does to many, but the word has been around for many years. A docent (the word being derived from the Latin word ducere, meaning to lead) is the term has been expanded to designate the corps of volunteer guides who staff many of the museums and other educational institutions in the world. Docents are educators, trained to further the public’s understanding of the cultural and historical collections of the institution. In many cases, docents, in addition to their prescribed function as guides, also conduct research utilizing the institution’s facilities. Prospective docents and tour leaders of the Tuckerton Seaport undergo a training process. You will also learn more about communication and interpretive skills and be introduced to the institution’s collection and its historical significance. At the Seaport you will be provided with tools and reading lists to add to the basic information provided during training, and will then shadow experienced docents as they give their tours before ultimately conducting a tour on your own. Docents are kept up-to-date with continuous training and seminars.

The Tuckerton Seaport Internship experience is designed to allow students to combine theory with practice while interacting with professional staff, volunteers and visitors. Internships are available in the following areas: Collections, Development, Education, Folklife, Marketing, Public Relations, Special Events and Volunteer Services. For more information on Tuckerton Seaport’s internship opportunities contact Brooke Salvanto at 609-296-8868 Or send your resume to: brookes@ tuckertonseaport.org

Read more on the Tuckerton Seaport below!

The Tucker’s Island Lighthouse features exhibits on privateers and pirates of the Jersey Coast, Tuckerton designated as a Port of Entry at the start of a new nation for receipt and departure of intra and international trade and travel, the origins of the U.S. Life Saving Service, shipwrecks and the Jersey Shore’s first resort. Tuckerton Seaport is also home to the Jersey Shore Folklife Center (JSFC). The JSFC researches, documents, supports and presents the diverse communities and traditions of the Jersey Shore and the Pinelands. The Center presents folk art programs and exhibits at Tuckerton Seaport and manages the artist roster and guest demonstrator schedule, the Folk and Traditional Artist in Residence Program, the Jersey Traditions outreach program and changing artist exhibits in J.C. Parker’s Decoy workshop. JSFC celebrates the profoundly creative spirit of the region, its traditional arts, and its occupational and recreational folklife. The Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve Interpretive Center (JCNERR) and its “Life on the Edge” exhibit, housed in the Tuckerton Yacht Club at the seaport, are managed by the Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The Borough of Tuckerton and Tuckerton Creek is located in one of the least disturbed places on the northeast coast of the United States. The Reserve encompasses habitat in and around the estuary where fresh water from the Mullica River and saltwater from the Atlantic Ocean mix in the Great Bay. Named for the famed Ocean Explorer Jacques Cousteau, the reserve conducts scientific research, hosts a variety of education and interpretive programs and encourages stewardship of these unique natural resources. At the “Life on the Edge” exhibit, visitors can go back in time to explore New Jersey’s environmental past, present and future within the Jacques Cousteau National Estuary. Dive into an amazing experience that takes you through the Pinelands, Great Bay, Barrier Island and Open Ocean ecosystems that make up this pristine natural reserve.

Blacksmith’s Shop

Once you walk out of the Visitors Center and approach the boardwalk, you will see our new blacksmith shop where you can feel the heat of the forge, hear the metal striking iron, and see useful and artistic pieces being forged out of fire and metal. There have been blacksmith shops in our town for over 100 years. The 1895 Sanborn map of our town shows a blacksmith shop next door to our current location. Blacksmith programming will add to the story we tell of how people lived and worked on the Barnegat Bay and in the Pinelands. Stephen Nuttall, local blacksmith and Seaport volunteer explains, “Our blacksmith shop will serve as an example of folk art that is important to our history. Not only is it vital to keep traditional folklife alive through exhibitions, demonstrating inspires others to continue this tradition.” A blacksmith shop will reengage returning guests and encourage a new audience to visit and learn.

COASTAL VOLUNTEERS IN MEDICINE PROVIDE HELP FOR UNINSURED

Coastal Volunteers in Medicine is a non profit whose primary mission is to understand and serve the health and wellness needs of the uninsured medically under-served population and their households living in Southern Ocean County, N.J. CVIM provides free primary healthcare and mental healthcare services using volunteer clinicians as serving care providers. There is a strong connection with some local physicians who treat patients pro bono. Many life altering situations, such as loss of a job, can lead a patient to a free clinic. One patient, Andrea, is in her mid fifties. She lived in Florida but moved to N.J. to live with her mother. Due to her failing health she can only manage part time work. Therefore she can’t afford healthcare. She’s not old enough for Medicare. She falls into a “doughnut hole" of despair. Her mother convinced her to make an appointment at Coastal Volunteers in Medicine. The clinicians were able to see her relatively quickly. She was diagnosed by CVIM clinicians and sent to Debora where she received the medications and care she needed. "The follow up by the CVIM staff was so caring and professional," she says it’s a big part of her recovery. Your support will enable CVIM the work it began in 2013. Since its inception, over 800 patients have been served. These are people who earn too much to

receive Medicaid yet do not earn enough for health insurance. Preventative care reduces the need for Emergency Care reducing costs. It is not too immodest to say there are patients who know their lives were saved because early detection of medical issues such as heart disease were corrected where they would have gone on with illness and perhaps a fatality. The clinic is not a walk in. Patients must call for an appointment. CVIM does not receive any government funding. All funding comes from private donations and small grants. There is a small staff to support the needs of the organization. Most of the health care professionals are volunteers who live their oath “Do No Harm” and provide a “Culture of Caring” which is the credo of all Volunteers in Medicine clinics. SURFLIGHT THEATRE REOPENS WITH 'SHOW PLACE' Reopened in Summer of 2017 after 2 years closed, the beloved Surflight Theatre is going strong and loving being part of our local community again. Located in Beach Haven on LBI, the theatre is going strong with Broadway musicals and plays like Mamma Mia, Matilda, The Holiday Extravaganza Tis the Season, and the Sherlock Holmes play Baskerville, as well as Musicals for Children through Labor Day, concerts in the fall and summer theatre camps. But one of the most funs is the Show Place Original Singing Ice Cream Parlour known as THE SHOW PLACE in Beach Haven, NJ since 1975. This wonderful, old fashioned experience is still a mystery to many many visitors and residents of Southern New Jersey. A little bit of theatre, a little bit of singing, an interactive ice cream dining experience, short vaudeville style cabaret shows and server/singers known as the “Waitress” make up this unique Jersey Shore experience where the singers, in their classic red and white striped vests and aprons, match the wallpaper. So what exactly is THE SHOWPLACE? The short answer, an ice cream parlour where the servers sing and perform for the patrons and invite them to “sing for their ice cream” as well. But honestly, it is so much more. Each spring, the Show Place manager and casting staff attend New York City auditions, Beach Haven Auditions and invite video submissions to cast the “Waitress” of Long Beach Island. Hundreds of young musical theatre performers, starting their career, audition for this unique serving opportunity to be able to spend the summer at the shore, one block from the beach, while performing up to 6 shows a night of musical theatre songs and skits. Performers entertain the guests with solos, duets and group numbers and they continue to add new songs to their

singing repertoire. There are many many Show Place performers who have gone on to successful Broadway careers. Everything in the parlour is theatrically themed from Broadway show Playbills on the walls to each sundae on the menu having a musical name such as: the Annie Get your Gun, the Singin’ in the Rain, the Hello Dolly or the Phantom of the Opera. Once ordered, a Waitress may come to your table to invite you to stand and sing or perform something related to your order. There is then a full company show. Very interactive, it is all about fun and ice cream. What better atmosphere after a day on the beach or sailing! Shows occur approximately every hour on the hour starting at 6 pm until the final seating at 11 pm. Guests arrive approximately 15 to 20 minutes before the hour and wait in line to enter. Each seating is approximately 45 minutes and guests are out within approximately an hour. There is no extra charge for the show; you only pay for the price of your sundae with a $7.00 minimum per person. The ShowPlace proudly serves Arctic Ice Cream as well as choices for vegan, dairy free or to accommodate allergies. Show Place accepts credit cards as well as reservations for groups of 15 or more for all seatings: 6 pm, 7pm, 8 pm, 9pm, 10 and 11 pm. Private birthday parties are offered in the afternoon. Parties will include songs, games, ice cream and pizza options will be available for groups of 25 or more with advance reservations. There will even be a Character special Hawaiian themed Ice Cream Social on Monday August 12th featuring characters like Moana and Maui at 4:00 pm. Show Place is open every day through Labor Day from 6 pm with the last seating at 11 pm.

40 YEARS AS THE VOICE OF OCEAN COUNTY SPORTS them and streaming football games.

By Chris Lundy, Micromedia Publications

The station took on the WOBM Christmas Classic in 1984. The huge basketball tournament was hosted at Ocean County College over winter break for many years until moving to High School North’s arena. Williams had pitched the idea of WOBM taking it over after Southern Regional School District was considering dropping it.

TOMS RIVER – Success in radio is based, in large part, on using your time wisely. Three minute songs. Two minute segments. Commercial breaks. For 40 years, Kevin Williams has used his time wisely. Signing on for the first time in July of 1979, he was WOBM’s first full time sports director. In an office decorated with, unsurprisingly, sports memorabilia, he talked about how things have changed – and how they haven’t – over four decades in the business.

They also just held the 42nd annual All-Shore Gridiron Classic, with football teams from all over the region. He’s met the Todd Fraziers of the Jersey shore area, watching them come up in the ranks and knowing “This kid is going somewhere.”

Back then, WOBM’s slogan “We’re Ocean County” was more than just talk. When the station began in 1968, 92.7 FM was the only commercial station in Ocean County. There was a lot of room to grow, and to forge their identity. As for sports, the station ran a highlight reel of the big national games, but 90 percent of it was high school athletics. Williams gave a five-minute sports segment at 5:35 a.m. Steve Paul would start his show right after. As they made a transition, the two would have a little on-air banter. Over time, a minute of conversation became two, two became three. Eventually, their banter got longer than Williams’ entire segment. This transitioned into “Coffee With Kevin” from 5 a.m. To 6 a.m. It was an hour of two guys talking about whatever interested them. This grew into cohosting the morning show from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. with Paul until 1996. He still has an on-air presence with the Hometown View, where he sounds

The media has to be careful how they cover these stand-outs. “It’s not fair to create a 17-year-old superstar,” he said. Photo by Chris Lundy but does what he needs to do.

off on whatever’s on his mind for 2-2.5 minutes.

There’s still a hunger for local sports coverage in the area, but the method people get it has expanded.

“I’ve never been censored but I’ve probably irked a person or two,” he said, laughing.

This fall, they will be streaming video on Shore Sports Network, one of their websites. You can listen to content on your radio, of course. Or you can listen through your computer. You can get a free app on your mobile device.

Throughout his career, he’s always had his finger on the pulse of the local sports community. Even if the way he reports on it is different. When he began, the DJs used records. Then, there were 8-tracks. Eventually, there were CDs. Now, there’s just a computer with everything installed on it. Some of the character of those old days are lost in the sterile, digital environment. He admits he’s “technology challenged,”

People want information immediately, and if you can’t provide it, they’re going to find it somewhere else. Radio stations have to be flexible to meet customers wherever they may be, whether it’s in their car or on their tablet, he said. He called this the ‘ATM mentality.’ Convenience is key.

The station had been sold a few times, most recently to Townsquare. Thankfully, through it all, ultra-local coverage, and sports, were a priority. “I’ve been really lucky to work for different companies, and had superiors who let me do what I do well,” he said.

Williams had always been involved in sports, and has always been with WOBM. There were times he thought about going for a bigger audience. He had sent tapes to ESPN, when that started, for example. But if he had gotten that job, he would have lost out on a lot of opportunities.

“I never missed anything. I walked my daughter to school. I went to 3 p.m. baseball games” for his kids, he said. “I met a lot of people, and they’ve become lifelong friends.” There are some things that WOBM will always be known for. Snow closures, for example. These used to be compiled by someone answering phones, and DJs reading the list over the air. Now, school officials log in and enter the info directly to the station’s website. Most schools robo-call parents, too.

What’s amazing about these stars is that they are really decent people, he said. They were good kids who grew up to be wonderful adults. There’s also more pressure on kids these days, and it’s hard for them to be under scrutiny like this. Social media has made bashing them a lot easier, and he’s not just talking about kids bullying each other. There are parents who are ripping on some of these kids when they have a bad day. “They’re 16! People who make millions of dollars have bad days,” he said. People have changed, too. “A lot of people are very connected to where they came from,” he said. There are a lot of retirees who don’t have the same emotional link to the local high schools. “There’s always a part of them left back home.” There are also a lot more people in general. Back in the day, there were just a handful of high schools. If you grew up in Toms River, you went to Toms River High School. Now, there are three. Someone who went to South might not care about how well East did in a game. Although his voice is so recognizable as a stalwart of local coverage, he hates the sound of it. Others don’t share that opinion, though, since he’s routinely asked to host events. “It took a long time for me to learn to say ‘no,’” he joked. But good things have come from when he’s said ‘yes.’ He was involved in the Toms RiverOcean County Chamber of Commerce, chairing it for a year. That’s just one of many things he was involved in. The Beachwood Fireworks Committee. He is a trustee for the Toms River Student Loan Fund. Beachwood Soccer. Big Brothers Big Sisters. The list keeps going. The work schedule is still pretty daunting. He’s in the station at 4 a.m., doing the morning coverage, and recording different versions of material. He’s still in the building 12 hours later. From September through May, he’s easily in the building 12-14 hours a day. All of this is tiring, since he’s 63, but it doesn’t mean he’s retiring. “I don’t know that I’d like to be bored.”

HOW TO SAVE FOR RETIREMENT AND COLLEGE

You want to retire comfortably when the time comes. But you also want to help your child pay for college. With the cost of college tuition increasing and no guarantee that Social Security will be around at the time you retire, the amount of money you need to save may seem overwhelming. How do you balance both of those goals? Courtesy of Ford

NEW FORD 7.3-LITER V8 SET TO DRIVE BEST-IN-CLASS FOR PICKUPS Ford F-Series, America’s best-selling truck for 42 years, is once again raising the bar for capability with its all-new 7.3-liter V8 gasoline engine. The 7.3-liter engine in Super Duty pickup cranks out bestin-class gas V8 output of 430 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and best-in-class torque of 475 ft.lb. at 4,000 rpm. No other competitor provides such a powerful and advanced gasoline engine in such a broad range of offerings – from Class 2 Super Duty pickups through Class 7 commercial trucks.

commercial engine experience, the 7.3-liter V8 delivers class-leading performance in a compact package. The 7.3-liter V8 features an overhead valve architecture that generates power low in the rev range to help get heavier loads moving sooner and with greater confidence. It also features a variabledisplacement oil pump, extralarge main bearings, forged steel crankshaft for durability, and piston cooling jets to help manage temperatures under heavy load.

“The 7.3-liter is designed The all-new 7.3-liter will for maximum durability in the be available first in Super harshest environments given Duty F-250 and F-350 pickup that our customers live and models. It joins the 6.2-liter work in these conditions every V8 gas engine in Super day,” said Joel Beltramo, Ford Duty’s lineup, along with the manager for gas V8 engines. upgraded third-generation “This engine has the largest 6.7-liter Power Stroke® diesel displacement in its class and is V8. Additional power and designed to provide benefits in capability numbers, including key areas like power, durability, Super Duty towing and payload ease of maintenance and total ratings as well as power operating costs.” numbers for the upgraded Based on decades of 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel

will be announced later this year. A dyno-certified version of the 7.3-liter V8 producing 350 horsepower at 3,900 rpm and 468 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,900 rpm will be standard on F-450 chassis cab, F-550, the new F-600, F-650 and F-750 Medium Duty trucks, and F-53 and F-59 stripped chassis models. The upgraded E-Series will also feature the 7.3-liter V8. An optional calibration intended to help customers reduce their fuel consumption will also be offered; more information will be made available at a later date. For F-250 through F-600 models the 7.3-liter engine is paired with the all-new Ford-designed and Ford-built 10-speed heavy-duty TorqShift® automatic transmission. All other commercial models retain the TorqShift® heavy-duty 6-speed automatic transmission.

By starting to plan now, you can strike a strategic Richard Galgano balance between saving for retirement and saving for college, says Will Larson, Retirement Planning Strategist for Wells Fargo Advisors. “A good way to help achieve both goals is to sit down with your financial advisor as soon as possible and create an investment plan,” he says. Your financial advisor will talk to you about your goals, estimate how much money you need, and then put together a plan to get you on your way toward saving for both retirement and your child’s college education. These strategies can be a good place to start. Pay yourself first. Your top priority should be saving for retirement, Larson says. He recommends putting aside around 15% of your income every year. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you can tap into your retirement plan to pay tuition — taxes and penalties mean you’ll take a big hit. Invest your money in taxadvantaged accounts. Your money will work harder for you if you take advantage of tax-friendly accounts like 529 savings plans. The key is starting as early as possible,

says Kirk Pacatte, Planning and Life Events Specialist at Wells Fargo Advisors. “The earlier you get money in there, the better the potential for it to grow taxdeferred and compound,” he says. “That’s especially important when saving for education because you have a shorter window to save than you do for retirement.” Take advantage of changes in income or expenses. If you get an unexpected inheritance, stash at least some of it in your savings. And if you get a 2% raise, consider putting 1% toward college savings and 1% toward retirement. If you no longer have to pay for daycare or preschool because your child goes to public elementary school, keep making those payments, but put them into your child’s college savings account instead, Larson suggests. Set clear expectations with your child. Have a frank conversation with your high-school-aged children about the level of financial support you can provide for college, Pacatte suggests. Some parents commit to paying the equivalent of the cost of instate tuition for four years at a state school. Others agree to pay for half of the bill and let their children know they are expected to cover the rest. Look for ways to save on tuition. Even if you have significant savings for college, apply for scholarships and financial aid — you never know what you’ll get, Pacatte says. You can also encourage your children take Advanced Placement or collegelevel courses in high school. If they earn enough college credit, they could potentially graduate from college in three years. “Being able to lop off a full year of college funding makes a huge difference in cost,” Larson says.

THE SAVINGS TRADITION CONTINUES. 375 Route 72 East Manahawkin, NJ 08050 609-597-8083

BARNEGAT LIGHTHOUSE GETS A NEW STATUESQUE KEEPER By Josh Bakan, Patch.com BARNEGAT LIGHT, NJ — The historic Barnegat Lighthouse has a new keeper. A new 8-foot bronze statue earned recognition on Wednesday’s National Lighthouse Day. The statue sits to the west of the lighthouse tower and gives recognition to the services keepers provide. The new statue honors “the dedication of lighthouse keepers to protecting vessels from dangerous coastlines and hazardous shoals, and providing safe entries to harbors around the globe,” according to an event

invitation from the Friends of Barnegat Lighthouse. The sculpture was created by Brian Hanlon, who is well-known for his work around the world. “Old Barney” celebrates its 160th birthday this year. The lighthouse was first lit the night of Jan. 1, 1859. The popular tourist destination is one of four lighthouse the New Jessey State Park Service administers. The others are Twin Lights Historic Sight, Absecon Lighthouse and Cape May Lighthouse.

LINCOLN NAVIGATOR EARNS TOP LARGE PREMIUM SUV FROM JD POWER Ford Motor Company has earned five awards in the 2019 J.D. Power U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study – the most awards of any company or brand. Ford trucks swept all three pickup segments, with wins for the all-new Ford Ranger in midsize, F-150 for the third consecutive year in large light-duty and Super Duty in large heavy-duty. Among large SUVs, Ford Expedition took top honors for the second straight year. Among luxury vehicles, Lincoln Navigator earns its second consecutive win in the Large Premium SUV segment and continues to be a top three model in the industry. In 2018, Lincoln Navigator posted the highest APEAL score of any model in this generation of the study. “Ford’s truck dominance now extends from Ranger to F-Series, thanks to our deep customer insights and

constantly listening to deliver the smart and insightful features they want and appreciate,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford chief product development & purchasing officer, “Our additional results with Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator reaffirm we’re making the right choices with more to come.” With four segment awards and a total score of 828 out of 1000, Ford brand vehicles improved by four points over last year, averaging 10 points higher than the average among non-premium brands. Now in its 24th year, J. D. Power’s APEAL study measures owners’ emotional attachment and level of excitement across 77 attributes, ranging from the power they feel when they step on the gas to the sense of comfort and luxury they feel when climbing into the driver’s seat. He is a Charter Member of V.F.W Post #10118 + Charter Member of Lacey Elks #2518. He’s also a member of the Forked River Beach Club and Chairman of the Lacey Booster Association. He’s a past President of the Lacey Township Businessmen’s Association and past Secretary and Vice President of the Lacey Township Republican Club. It doesn’t stop there! Rich served as a member of the Charter Study Commission, and a member of the Mayor’s advisory Council. He was Chairman of the Lacey Heart Association for

20 years and past President and member for 30 years of the Forked River Rotary Club. Something that has stuck with him all these years was that in 1974 he was told by an Insurance Executive that deemed from testing, he was incapable of becoming a Salesman. Over 1,000 homes and 11,000 cars sold Rich proved him slightly wrong!

Greenbriar Car Show Continues Fun Tradition It’s always a fun time at the Greenbriar Oceanaire Car Show. This coming January will be my five year anniversary of being a Sales Consultant at Causeway Ford Lincoln. This year was my third year in a row that I had the privilege of being part of the Greenbriar Car Show. It’s a great opportunity being there because I get to meet a great number of people

that are customers that shop at the Causeway Family of Dealerships. I am planning to be there again next year and meet many more great people at a great place! If interested in a vehicle or have any questions, please reach out to me. Thank you! Antonio Brito, (609) 597-8083, ext 1129

50 Feet for 50 Years Causeway Supports our Young Graduates The Causeway Family of Dealerships awards scholarships to our local High Schools: Southern Regional, Barnegat and Pinelands. For the past 21 years, Causeway has financially helped our young College bound students. Our owner, David Wintrode, a former English teacher has always valued the importance of Education and supported reading programs as well as donating over $15,000 in scholarships each year. Skip Martin, Scholarship Chairman hands out the scholarships each year at the Schools Scholarship Night, and the recipient’s reactions and gratitude are overwhelming.
