When it comes to performance the Nissan Sentra doesn’t exactly come to mind recently. In fact the Sentra is actually one of the slowest cars in its segment with its 130hp and 128torque; however, this car is mostly a commuter economy car and not really built for speed. The Sentra used to come in SE-R and SE-R SpecV models but Nissan ended that in 2012. In 2016 Nissan realized that they had to start being more competitive, and since literally all their rivals had a “sport” type model for their cars, Nissan decided to bring back their go faster version as the all new “SR Turbo” and 2017 Sentra NISMO models (Nismo due out in January). If this peaked your interest… than read on! The 2016 Sentra SRTurbo is trying to make up for lost time epically when you have every ford model with a turbo version and Hyundai now with the Elantra Sport. This Turbo comes with the 1.6L 4 cyl engine from the Juke and this Direct Injection beauty pumps out 188hp @ 5,600rpm and 177lb-ft @ 5,200rpms. In a Sentra this is mind blowing! Another awesome feature of this version is you can get it with an actual 6 speed manual (instead of the standard CVT Automatic), the throws are a bit long… but in all fairness it’s just nice to get control over the transmission again. This test car I was in was black with black and two tone rims that really made the car stand out. It also had ground effects that were a bit different and gave it a more aggressive look. Don’t think just because it’s a sport model that you have to give up nice features like a Bose radio, Blind Spot monitor, navigation, LED Headlights / Taillights, and Leather. The new Sentra Turbo is a nice addition to an already great model which can cater to someone that is looking for their economy car to be a little bit on the dark side.

IN THE SPIRIT OF THE SEASON GIVING BACK TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

By Joe Stroffolino Editor

What do you want for Christmas? Or Hanukkah? Or Kwanzaa? Whichever December holiday you observe, everyone has a list of items they would love to receive. For many this is a season of excess. For many more it is a season of need. In Ocean County, the official poverty level in 2006, the first year of the study, was at 8.8 percent. It held steady until it jumped from 7.9 percent in 2009 to 11.2 percent in 2010. The poverty rate dipped slightly to 10.2 percent in 2013, before inching up to a high of 12 percent in 2014. The federal poverty level for a family of four is $23,800. However, Legal Services of New Jersey, the group that conducted the study, factors cost of living, which is high in N.J., into its equation, and it sets the figure for a family of four anywhere from $64,238 to $73,371, the report said.

concerned about putting food on the table. Hunger among these families is a real ongoing issue in Monmouth and Ocean counties. These statistics from the Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties confirm these facts. • One in every 10 people in Monmouth and Ocean Counties receive “emergency” food from the FoodBank’s network of pantries, soup kitchens and other agencies. • The gap between the rich and the poor continues to increase. While personal income increased among the wealthy, so did poverty among the poorer segments of the population, rising from 5.3% to 6.8% in Monmouth County and from 6.7 to 11% in Ocean County in the period 2000-2010. • Poverty

• Cooking Oils • Ready-to-eat Canned Meals • Canned Dry Beans When you see these numbers it’s quite sobering. New Jersey in general is an expensive place to live. Families in these lower income ranges are less concerned about buying holiday gifts and more

increased significantly in the last decade: from 6.8% to 8.7% in Monmouth County and from 10.4% to 19.2% in Ocean County.

Drop off your food and toy donations today!

• The FoodBank served 51,000 children with emergency food in 2010, compared with “only” almost 19,000 in 2005. • Of all households receiving emergency food in Monmouth and Ocean Counties, almost half (45%) of households with children experienced hunger during the course of the year. In the face of such staggering disparity what can the average person do to stem the tide? Well I’m glad you asked. All December long the Causeway Family of Dealerships will be collecting nonperishable food items for the Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. The FoodBank’s mission is to alleviate hunger and build food security in Monmouth and Ocean Counties. The FoodBank envisions Monmouth and Ocean Counties as a food secure community where all people at all times have access to enough nutritious food to maintain an active and healthy life. The evergreen fir tree has traditionally been used to celebrate winter festivals (pagan and Christian) for thousands of years. Pagans used branches of it to decorate their homes during the winter solstice, as it made them think of the spring to come. The Romans used Fir Trees to decorate their temples at the festival of Saturnalia. Christians use it as a sign of everlasting life with God. Nobody is really sure when Fir trees were first used as Christmas trees. It probably began about 1000 years ago in Northern Europe. Many early Christmas Trees seem to have been hung upside down from the ceiling using chains (hung from chandeliers/lighting hooks). Other early Christmas Trees, across many parts of northern Europe, were cherry or hawthorn plants (or a branch of the plant) that were put into pots and brought inside so they would hopefully flower at Christmas time. If you couldn’t afford a real plant, people made pyramids of woods and they were decorated to look like a tree with paper,

WINTER 2016

‘TWAS THE NIGHT Before Christmas

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled down for a long winter’s nap, When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below, When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer, With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name; “Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN! On, COMET! on CUPID! on, DONDER and BLITZEN! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!” As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky, So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my hand, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

PUT DOWN YOUR PHONE AND DRIVE!

By Timothy J. Wintrode, Esq.

Did you know that on July 1, 2014, the fines and penalties for talking or texting on a hand-held cell phone were dramatically increased? As of that day, the fines for a first violation were increased to $200-$400, plus court costs; $400 -$600 for a second offense; and $600-$800 for a third offense. In addition, if convicted of a third offense, the Court can revoke the driver’s New Jersey license for 90 days. With these changes, New Jersey may very well have the toughest cell phone law in the entire United States. When enacted in 2004, New Jersey became only the second State to outlaw the use of handheld cell phones. Initially, N.J.S.A. 39:4-97.3 called for relatively minor fines, without the need for a costly court appearance, or threat of license revocation or penalty points by the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). However, as distracted driving has become a hot topic in New Jersey, the penalties have steadily increased. In 2008, the statute was changed to allow police officers to pull motorists over for cell phone violations only. With this change, the number of cell phone tickets issued increased substantially state wide. Coupled with the enhanced penalties brought about in 2014, these tickets have become quite common and very expensive.

N.J.S.A. 39:4-97.3 provides in part: “The use of a wireless telephone or electronic communications device by an operator of a moving motor vehicle on a public road or highway shall be unlawful except when the telephone or electronic communication device is used hands-free…” The definition of “use” is wide-ranging, including: talking, texting, listening, checking voicemail, emailing or surfing the web. New Jersey has established only two exceptions to its cell phone law. According to the MVC, “Although it is discouraged, drivers may use a hands-free device if it does not interfere with standard safety equipment.” This can include Bluetooth or speaker phone if the phone is not held in your hand. Or, “a hand held phone may be used for an emergency only and the driver must keep one hand on the wheel at all times”. The statute limits this type of “emergency” to situations where the driver is in fear of his or her safety by criminal act, or to report an accident, serious hazard or an impaired driver. Both local and state police departments now routinely issue thousands of cell phone violations to New Jersey drivers every year. Increased fines, mandatory court appearances, and even the threat of a loss of your license are all now a reality. Understanding the law and the consequences of N.J.S.A. 39:4-97.3 is your responsibility. Know your rights in New Jersey Municipal Courts. Timothy J. His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

BUT NOT THAT FAR!

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose; He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!

THE ALL-NEW FORD F-150 RAPTOR TACKLES BAJA 1000

THEN DRIVES THE LONG WAY HOME As Ford starts sales of the all-new 2017 F-150 Raptor, the Ford Performance team completed one final grueling endurance test – running in the 49th SCORE Baja 1000 across the famed desert in the Baja California peninsula in Mexico. Led by Greg Foutz and the team from Foutz Motorsports, the 2017 F-150 Raptor finished the race in 35 hours, 59 minutes and 8 seconds to place third in the stock full class. Then, the crew decided to toss their tools and spare tires in the back of the race truck and drove it back to their home shop near Phoenix. “That’s why the new Ford F-150 Raptor is badass! It’s a race-proven off-road monster that can race off-road an entire weekend, then take you and your friends on a road trip the next day,” Foutz said. “That and the $49,520 starting price make it a clear winner on the showroom floor.” Powered by an all-new high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6 engine that delivers 450 horsepower and 510 lb.-ft. of torque, plus an all-new Ford-built 10-speed transmission, the F-150 Raptor race truck showcases the level of performance this purposebuilt off-road vehicle will deliver to customers once it goes on sale in December. Given the 2017 F-150 Raptor’s extreme allterrain capabilities, the race truck utilized its factory equipment across all 850 treacherous miles, including its stock engine, transmission, brakes, Alignment Special wheels with BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2 tires – and even its factory air conditioning, satellite and Ensure Proper Wear andradio Help windshield –Improve often unheard of in race vehicles. The Gas Mileage Foutz Motorsports team only added a chromalloy 4 Wheel Alignment steel safety cage, puncture-resistant fuel cell, racing For Only..... seats and full race harness to meet SCORE rules. The factory-spec Raptor springs and Fox Racing

shocks were adjusted to accommodate the added weight from the safety cage and fuel cell. Other production vehicle updates that carry over to the race truck include the highstrength, military-grade, aluminum-alloy body and high-strength steel frame, all-new six-mode Terrain Management System™ and advanced four-wheel-drive torqueon-demand transfer case. Foutz said the team drivers quickly adapted to the performance of the Raptor engine and drivetrain, which was entirely stock. “We used the Raptor Terrain Management System to select Baja Mode and just tweaked two-wheel versus four-wheel drive depending on the terrain we were on,” Foutz said. “When we hit the road for home, we dropped it in the Sport Mode and took off for the highway.” Ford Performance engineers used the Raptor race truck program as a platform to share technology and prove out their trucks in the real world. Jamal Hameedi, Ford Performance chief engineer says the testing helps to create exciting products that not only raise the performance bar, they deliver Built Ford Tough capability and durability. “We’re completely thrilled at how well the all-new F-150 Raptor performed throughout the Baja 1,000 race as it’s one of the most brutal environments you can ever compete in, “Hameedi said, “Having race-

proven, real-world performance experience and data to validate – further solidifies Ford’s truck leadership position and Raptor as the ultimate from-the-factory high-performance off-road truck.” Ford Performance Expands as Brand Halo Set to deliver 12 new vehicles by 2020, Ford Performance leverages its racing efforts and expertise to speed innovations on dedicated performance models and performance parts. The group works to quickly iterate the latest technologies that can ultimately be applied across Ford Motor Company’s entire passenger vehicle lineup. The performance segment is a growing business for Ford, as the company recognizes a customer desire for vehicles that offer fuel economy, leading technology and a great driving experience. Along with F-150 Raptor, the Ford Performance lineup includes the Ford GT supercar, Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT350R Mustang, Focus RS, Focus ST and Fiesta ST. -www.media.ford.com

DREAMS DON’T COME TRUE TIPS FOR MAKING UNLESS YOU ACT UPON THEM When I was a young girl, my parents taught me that I could do anything I put my mind to, I just had to make sure I was the best at it. This is how I became the girl who always won more candy at kids’ parties, the girl who always answered questions first in class, and the first one to turn in tests. I feel truly fortunate to have grown up in a home that pushed me beyond the limits and social expectations for women, even in a society like Mexico’s – known for its deeply rooted male chauvinism or machismo – where women have few opportunities to exercise their rights. Even though Mexico has experienced positive changes over the last few years in terms of women in the workplace, there is still a huge opportunity to create a more diverse society, particularly as related to equal opportunity in education, work, and life in general. With respect to my personal story, I don’t think it has been only a matter of luck. I firmly believe that dreams don’t come true unless you make them a reality. I always knew that I would lead a company someday; I just didn’t know exactly when it would happen. As a woman, you must work hard and stay focused to make your dreams come true, as we consistently face gender barriers. I remember that my venture into the automotive industry was simply the result of chance. At that time, I was looking for a part time job so that I could buy a car to commute between home and college. That was what led me to apply for a job at a car dealership, which then led me to the sales floor, where I experienced the most amazing revelation of my life: I realized that gasoline runs through my veins. Car sales are unique and the experience transformed my life, because in Mexico, unlike other countries, you celebrate the purchase of a new car as the realization of a dream. I was deeply grateful to be part of this important celebration in the lives of so many people, and was actually invited on several occasions to be part of the family photo customers took when they came to pick up their new cars. That is when I knew that I was on the right path to make my dreams come true. I applied for a job at the company’s financial branch, Renault Financial Services, where I started my professional career. Since then, I’ve spent more than 15 years working for companies within the Renault-Nissan Alliance and, while it has been an intense and challenging experience, it has also been interesting, to say the least. The obstacles and barriers I have overcome are not the focus of my story, but rather how I overcame them and won a seat on the company’s board of directors. I believe that this is the true lesson that can be learned from looking for opportunities and taking risks. In my first years as a sales representative, I remember spending hours driving to remote cities in Northern Mexico to visit the brand’s dealership owners. I spent even more time sitting outside their offices, waiting

for them to receive me, since they could not fathom, at the time, that a woman was there to tell them how to manage their business. I soon understood that I had to offer these men something they didn’t have. So, I used information as my primary tool to give them a new perspective. I remember studying the data for each city, including the local market’s behavior and even its social situation so I could give them new information they did not know they needed. After a couple of tries, they finally opened their office doors to me, and I started making a name for myself in the automotive industry, which is effectively dominated by men but is not theirs alone, as my experience shows. After several years working at the company, José Muñoz, Nissan Mexico’s president at the time, asked me if I wanted to be the first woman to sit on the board of directors. I immediately said yes without hesitation and without having the slightest idea about what the position entailed. I remember asking myself at that critical moment in my life if I should take the elevator to see where it takes me, or stay on the same floor. I took the elevator. I believe that women must acknowledge that we can do anything we want. We are just as capable as men but, sadly, many women still don’t realize this, be it for lack of self-confidence or due to gender barriers. Let me assure you that if I succeeded, anyone can succeed as well. That’s how I came to hold my current position as president and CEO of Nissan Mexico. I am proud to say that I finally broke the glass ceiling by becoming the first woman at Nissan to lead a country’s operations in more than 83 years. It was a big achievement and, yes, I think I can go even further. Many people have asked me if I have finally seen my life dream come true, to which I answer no. I keep living my dream, every day of my life. The only difference is that now I feel empowered to make changes to help other women have the opportunities I did not have at the start of my career. I have always said that if my life story inspires just one girl, one female college student, or one woman in an executive position, I will have accomplished one of my life goals, and this is something I see in my daughter’s eyes every day. I want her to be whoever she wants to be. I want her to help other women and to be inspired by her life choices – because women need to support and empower each other in our collective pursuit of a better life and future. -www.nissannews.com

The Fall season has passed. Leaf clean ups still linger to continue into December. Every weekend the Blowers and rakes come out and the work for clearing the lawn is a priority. It has been a wonderful continued sight of color for a couple of months. Unfortunately the aftermath is a lot of work for the preparation of the upcoming dormant season, and growth in the Spring. Now that the lawn is relatively clear, the Holiday decorating can begin!

Decorating outside your home is a personal preference. Every home on the block does it differently and that is what is so fun to observe! We still love to drive around the neighborhoods and see the displays people put out! It’s a simple childhood memory that continues to add to the warmth of the season for many generations. Decorations vary from a simple front door wreath with a white porch light, to multiple colored lights covering everything! We all tend to do basically the same thing every year except when the Holiday brings us a special occasion. A new birth in the family, small children who are getting older and love the exciting displays, or in our situation all our grown children are returning from out of state to celebrate. Then you go all out. Lots of new lights are purchased to add to your basic display, or fun decorative accessories are put out too. Thankfully lights can be purchased at all the stores and deals can be found. Let’s face the fact that those lights you put away so nice and neat to work the following year just don’t work. For a few dollars you can put up a good size 100 count light set and be festive. It will be enough to light up your front door. When you pull up to your house after work all day it puts you in a good mood. It doesn’t take much. If you want more, don’t worry, ‘Too many lights’ doesn’t describe anyone’s house at the Holidays. So get out there and take a little drive around your neighborhood to enjoy the happy displays that people put out. It is a memory for young and old, and doesn’t even cost anything to do it.

The inside décor of our homes varies the most. There are often sentimental decorations and ornaments passed down through generations. Mixing them with whatever you like is what makes it even more special. We have some items from our grandparents and relatives that they cherished, and now remind us of them when we put them out. When my adult children return to visit, I like to have most of the same decorations as when they were kids. They look forward to our traditions, and every family makes up their own. If I make too many changes my kids are sure to let me know it isn’t the same. Since they are grown, I use a few items from their childhood to decorate around the house too. There are a couple displays of Radio Flyer sleds, and American Girl dolls around to remind us of that. Some homemade ornaments and items are still around too from when we made them together over 25 years ago. Elementary school gifts made, and ornaments from family vacations add to the atmosphere. Favorite early photos of us together or with Santa when they were little are my favorites. Photos of our grandparents and parents and some elder relatives are up on the walls for everyone to enjoy. Remembering them and their history in our own families are important to cherish. Many families are spread out throughout the country and are not able to be together for the Holidays. Having some decorations from your time with them brings them closer. What decorations you put up around your home is for you to have happy memories each year and look forward to a great New Year ahead!

There are many places to volunteer or purchase items from a gift tree or food bank in businesses around our town. Every person has the opportunity to make the Holiday special for someone else they don’t even know. Whether you help support those in need, or volunteer, or put up decorations outside your home for others to enjoy, it is making someone’s Holiday a special time. Happy Holidays from our family to yours.

THE HISTORY OF CHRISTMAS TREES Continued from page 1

apples and candles. Sometimes they were carried around from house to house, rather than being displayed in a home. It’s possible that the wooden pyramid trees were meant to be like Paradise Trees. These were used in medieval German Mystery or Miracle Plays that were acted out in front of Churches on Christmas Eve. In early church calendars of saints, 24th December was Adam and Eve’s day. The Paradise Tree represented the Garden of Eden. It was often paraded around the town before the play started, as a way of advertising the play. The plays told Bible stories to people who could not read. The first documented use of a tree at Christmas and New Year celebrations is argued between the cities of Tallinn in Estonia and Riga in Latvia! Both claim that they had the first trees; Tallinn in 1441 and Riga in 1510. Both trees were put up by the ‘Brotherhood of Blackheads’ which was an association of local unmarried merchants, ship owners, and foreigners in Livonia (what is now Estonia and Latvia). Little is known about either tree apart from that they were put in the town square, were dance around by the Brotherhood of Blackheads and were then set on fire. This is like the custom of the Yule Log. The word used for the ‘tree’ could also mean a mast or pole, tree might have been like a ‘Paradise Tree’ or a tree-shaped wooden candelabra rather than a ‘real’ tree. In the town square of Riga, the capital of Latvia, there is a plaque which is engraved with “The First New Year’s Tree in Riga in 1510”, in eight languages. You can find out more about the Riga Tree from this website: www. firstchristmastree.com A picture from Germany in 1521 which shows a tree being paraded through the streets with a man riding a horse behind it. The man is dressed a bishop, possibly representing St. Nicholas. In 1584, the historian Balthasar Russow wrote about a tradition, in Riga, of a decorated fir tree in the market square where the young men “went with a flock of maidens and women, first sang and danced there and then set the tree aflame”. There’s a record of a small tree in Breman, Germany from 1570. It is described as a tree decorated with “apples, nuts, dates, pretzels and paper flowers”. It was displayed in a ‘guild-house’ (the meeting place for a society of business men in the city). The first first person to bring a Christmas Tree into a house, in the way we know it today, may have been the 16th century German preacher Martin Luther. A story is told that, one night before Christmas, he was walking through the forest and looked up to see the stars shining through the tree branches. It was so beautiful, that he went home and told his children that it reminded him of Jesus, who left the stars of heaven to come to earth at Christmas. Some people say this is the same tree as the ‘Riga’ tree, but it isn’t! The Riga tree originally took place a few decades earlier. Northern Germany and Latvia are neighbors. Another story says that St. Boniface of Crediton (a village in Devon, UK) left England and traveled to Germany to preach to the pagan German tribes and convert them to Christianity. He is said to have come across a group of pagans about to sacrifice a young boy while worshipping an oak tree. In anger, and to stop the sacrifice, St. Boniface is said to have cut down the oak tree and, to his amazement, a young fir tree sprang up from the roots of the oak tree. St. Boniface took this as a sign of the Christian faith and his followers decorated the tree with candles so that St. Boniface could preach to the pagans at night. There is another legend, from Germany, about how the Christmas Tree came into being, it goes: Once on a cold Christmas Eve night, a forester and his family were in their cottage gathered round the fire to keep warm. Suddenly there was a knock on the door. When the forester opened the door, he found a poor little boy standing on the door step, lost and alone. The forester welcomed him into his house and the family fed and washed him and put him to bed in the youngest sons own bed (he had to share with his brother that night!). The next morning, Christmas Morning, the family were woken up

by a choir of angels, and the poor little boy had turned into Jesus, the Christ Child. The Christ Child went into the front garden of the cottage and broke a branch off a Fir tree and gave it to the family as a present to say thank you for looking after him. So ever since them, people have remembered that night by bringing a Christmas Tree into their homes! In Germany, the first Christmas Trees were decorated with edible things, such as gingerbread and gold covered apples. Then glass makers made special small ornaments similar to some of the decorations used today. In 1605 an unknown German wrote: “At Christmas they set up fir trees in the parlours of Strasbourg and hang thereon roses cut out of many-colored paper, apples, wafers, gold foil, sweets, etc.” At first, a figure of the Baby Jesus was put on the top of the tree. Over time it changed to an angel/fairy that told the shepherds about Jesus, or a star like the Wise Men saw. The first Christmas Trees came to Britain sometime in the 1830s. They became very popular in 1841, when Prince Albert (Queen Victoria’s German husband) had a Christmas Tree set up in Windsor Castle. In 1848, drawing of “The Queen’s Christmas tree at Windsor Castle” was published in the Illustrated London News. The drawing was republished in Godey’s Lady’s Book, Philadelphia in December 1850 (but they removed the Queen’s crown and Prince Albert’s moustache to make it look ‘American’!). The publication of the drawing helped Christmas Trees become popular in the UK and USA. In Victorian times, the tree would have been decorated with candles to represent stars. In many parts of Europe, candles are still used to decorate Christmas trees. Tinsel and The Legend of the Christmas Spider Tinsel was also created in Germany, were it was originally made from thin strips of beaten silver. But when plastic/man made tinsel was invented, it became very popular as it was much cheaper than real silver and also lighter to go on the tree! There are also folk stories about how tinsel was created - by The Christmas Spider! These tales seem to have started in Eastern Germany or Ukraine but are also told in parts of Finland and Scandinavia. The stories are now also popular in other countries such as the USA; although I live in the UK and most people in my country have never heard of the story/ legend! All the versions of the story involve a poor family who can’t afford to decorate a Tree for Christmas (in some versions the tree grew from a pine cone in their house, in others the family have bought a tree into the house). When the children go to sleep on Christmas Eve a spider covers the tree in cobwebs. Then on Christmas morning the cobwebs are magically turned into silver and gold strands which decorate the tree! Some versions of the story say that it’s the light of the sun which changed the cobwebs into silver and gold but other versions say it’s St Nicholas / Santa Claus / Father Christmas / das Christkind which made the magic happen. In parts of Germany, Poland, and Ukraine it’s meant to be good luck to find a spider or a spider’s web on your Christmas Tree. Spider’s web Christmas Tree decorations are also popular in Ukraine. They’re called ‘pavuchky’ (which means ‘little spider’) and the decorations are normally made of paper and silver wire. You might even put an artificial spider’s web on your tree! Christmas Tree Lights Because of the danger of fire, in 1895 Ralph Morris, an American telephonist, invented the first electric Christmas lights, similar to the ones we use today. In 1885 a hospital in Chicago burned down because of candles on a Christmas Tree! And in 1908 insurance companies in the USA tried to get a law made that would ban candles from being used on Christmas Trees because of the many fires they had caused! So we have to say a big thank you to Ralph Morris for making Christmas safer! The most lights lit at the same time on a Christmas tree is 194,672 and was done by Kiwanis Malmedy / Haute Fagnes Belgium in Malmedy, Belgium, on 10 December 2010! Many towns and villages have their own Christmas Trees. One of the most famous is the tree in Trafalgar Square in London, England, which is given to the UK by Norway every year as a ‘thank you’ present for the help the UK gave Norway in World War II. The White House in the USA has had a big tree on the front lawn since the 1920s. The record for the most Christmas trees chopped down in two minutes is 27 and belongs to Erin Lavoie from the USA. She set the record on 19th December 2008 on the set of Guinness World Records: Die GroBten Weltrekorde in Germany. Artificial Christmas Trees really started becoming popular in the early 20th century. In the Edwardian period Christmas Trees made from colored ostrich feathers were popular at ‘fashionable’ parties. Around 1900 there was even a short fashion for white trees - so if you thought colored trees are a new invention they’re not! Over the years artificial tress have been made from feathers, papier mâché, metal, glass, and many different types of plastic (I’ve got a couple of inflatable trees!). The tallest artificial Christmas tree was 52m (170.6ft) high and was covered in green PVC leaves!. It was called the ‘Peace Tree’ and was designed by Grupo Sonae Distribuição Brasil and was displayed in Moinhos de Vento Park, Porto Alegre, Brazil from 1st December 2001 until 6th January 2002. In many countries, different trees are used as Christmas trees. In New Zealand a tree called the ‘Pohutakawa’ that has red flowers is sometimes used and in India, Banana or Mango trees are sometimes decorated.

Lauryn plans to continue her education and Field Hockey career next year. Congrats on a great season. #RamPride

Congrats Paul

Congratulations Southern Boys Cross Country runner Paul Keyes on being named Southern Regional High School #BSNSports Male Athlete of the Week for the span of 11/1/16 to 11/15/16. Good Luck the rest of the school year.

Taylor Mulch

Taylor Mulch 11th Grade Girls Cross Country If there is one word to describe Taylor Mulch’s 2016 cross country campaign, it is perseverance. From the first meet, the future of the season was bleak as Taylor could barely walk due to nagging knee issues. While this would have ended many runners’ season, it did not daunt Taylor, and she worked hard to rehab her knees and return to form as the Rams’ top runner. When Taylor began to feel healthy, she clocked a 20:26 5k on a hilly Holmdel Park course; then, she ran 19:14, 19:15, and 19:13 respectively for three weeks at Ocean County Park which was nearly two minutes faster than what she ran during the second week of the season. At the Group Four South Jersey Sectional Championships at Delsea High School, Taylor led the Rams finishing 8th in a time of 18:53 which was 1:50 faster than what she ran there four weeks prior. Although the Rams did not advance out of the section, Taylor’s 8th place earned her a berth in the NJSIAA State Group Four Championships last Saturday (11/12/16) at Holmdel Park. She placed 25th out of a field of 143 with a time of 19:56, 30 seconds faster than she ran there six weeks earlier. This effort was also the 58th fastest time out of the 501 athletes that ran on Saturday. Taylor’s diligence and grittiness is matched by her positivity and ebullience making her a respected leader for the Rams. She looks forward to some welcomed recovery time before indoor track begins next Monday, November 21, 2016. Written by Southern Regional High School Girls Cross Country Coach Mr. Jason Capelli.

Congrats Zach

Congratulations Southern Wrestling alum Zach Wilhelm (Stevens) on winning the 2016 Roger Williams Invitational in Bristol, Rhode Island on Saturday, November 12th. MIKE GESICKI had no idea he broke a record

Junior tight end Mike Gesicki set a new Penn State record without even realizing it. With five catches for 47 yards against the Scarlet Knights, Gesicki set a new single-season receptions record for a Penn State tight end. The New Jersey native’s 42 catches this year surpassed the previous record (41), set by Andrew Quarless in 2009. When asked about the record, Gesicki was somewhat surprised, but thanked his teammates and coaching staff. “It’s a tribute to the guys around me and the offense,” Gesicki said. “The opportunities (the coaches) are giving me, I appreciate it all. Obviously that’s something that I’m proud of and have worked for.”

Congrats Southern Regional Field Hockey Seniors Kelly, Holly, Lauren & Kaitlyn on helping lead “A” South to a 5-1 victory over “B” South in the Ocean County Senior Field Hockey game at Central Regional on Tuesday, November 15, 2016. Good Luck seniors and Thank you for all you have done for Southern. #RamPride

Mike Gesicki made a crazy 45-yard TD catch in the third quarter of Saturday’s game against Michigan State. After the extra point, No. 7 Penn State went ahead 24-12. The catch also gave Gesicki a new school record for single-season receiving yards for a tight end. Gesicki had 546 receiving yards on 42 catches going into Saturday’s game.

the Badgers and perhaps propel themselves further into the College Football Playoff conversation, or at least strengthen their position for a berth in the Rose Bowl. Although he coaches one of the youngest teams in the country, Lions coach James Franklin said there was no doubt in his mind his players were capable of completing a second half comeback once more. “I felt like we left the locker room really confident,” Franklin said. “We’ve been in that situation a number of times and handled it well. These guys, they believe in each other. I think they believe in us. We’ve got great chemistry. We’ve got really good relationships. We care about one another in the locker room.” Needing a spark, trailing 28-7, quarterback Trace McSorley went to one of his many playmakers to get things started. The playmaker of choice on this occasion was Saeed Blacknall, who reeled in a 40-yard touchdown catch to close the first half and a 70yard strike to open the second half. Suddenly, it was a 28-21 ballgame. “To get that touchdown before halftime, we went into halftime like we were winning the game,” Gesicki said. “We knew that we were going to come out in the second half and make adjustments and then go out and play the way we

did in the second half.”

A defensive stand, followed by a 1-yard Saquon Barkley touchdown run later, and the score was tied before the Badgers even had a chance to blink. After the Badgers connected on a field goal, McSorley drove the offense right down the field again to set up an 18-yard wheel route touchdown to Saquon Barkley, giving the Lions their first lead of the day at 35-31 with 13:41 to go in the fourth quarter. “Trace has been dynamic all year long,” Franklin said. McSorley was named the game’s Most Valuable Player after he finished 22-of-31 for 384 yards and 4 touchdowns. “I’m really proud of him,” Franklin added. “You know his attitude, his demeanor. The type of teammate that he is, the type of leader that he is.” A Tyler Davis field goal extended the lead to 38-31 with 5:14 remaining. From there, it was up to the Lions defense to close out the win, which they did, stuffing the Badgers on fourth-and-1. “I think we just had a jolt,” cornerback Grant Haley said. “We just had energy in the second half. And I think that was what led us to success.”

7 Reasons That Rogue One Could Be The Best Star Wars Film Ever

the planning for the following year begins in January and all our members are expected to participate. Once the homes are chosen and graciously given to the club to decorate the week of the tour, the planning and work begins. From the chairpersons to the designers for the homes, to the hostesses and the workers for the tea and boutique, and all the countless other jobs, the ladies of the club give up much of their time and effort to bring this endeavor into a tour to remember for all who attend. The homes are decorated with beautifully arranged flowers and greens, imaginative decorations and stunning Christmas trees. The hard work of all of our members allows us to give back to the community in support of environmental concerns facing our area, as well as other community oriented projects that we do thru out the year. Our grant committee members review the applications that are received and they make the awards, as well as scholarships for students going into environmental studies. Some of the organizations that the club has supported are The Terrapin Nesting Project, the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, Alliance for a Living Ocean, and Long Beach Island Foundation for the Arts and Sciences. The Garden Club of LBI works hard to create a tour of homes that everyone who attends can enjoy, feel the holiday spirit, and get many ideas to incorporate into their own holiday decorations. And for the members of the club, all that work pays off in multiple ways as we contribute to organizations that help keep our environment healthy for all who live, work and visit our island and surrounding communities.

The Garden Club of LBI’s annual Holiday Tour of Homes, a local tradition for 51 years, only missed one year and that was 2012 when Sandy devastated Long Beach Island and surrounding areas. The Tour, always held on the second Thursday of December, is the only fundraiser of The Garden Club of LBI and approximately 900 people come out to begin their Christmas season with our beautifully decorated homes extending from Holgate to Barnegat Light. Participants get to enjoy visiting the stylishly adorned homes, a tea at the Brant Beach Yacht Club and a boutique held at the Holy Trinity Church also in Brant Beach. Tickets sell out in quickly and the proceeds from the tour benefit many local organizations dedicated to environmental activities. The tour is a massive undertaking, and

5) It’s Giving A Bunch Of Up-And-Coming Actors A Chance To Make It Big One thing I love about the cast of Rogue One is how diverse it is in terms of known and slightly unknown actors. You’ll look at it and say, “Oh hey, Forest Whitaker is in this. That’s pretty cool.” And then you’ll look at someone like Riz Ahmed and think, “I haven’t really seen him in anything.”

With all of the newly announced entries into the Star Wars universe beginning to take shape, only one of them stands out as different from the others, and actually seems to warrant fan’s attention. That film is Star Wars: Rogue One, a “heist” film that will revolve around a rag-tag group of Rebel soldiers who are tasked with stealing the blueprints of the Empire’s disastrous planet destroying Deathstar. The cast of characters will be new for the film universe, and far more diverse than any other Star Wars movie sans-Force Awakens. 7) It’s A New/Interesting Story For The Star Wars Universe Rogue One is a creative concept for a Star Wars film when you sit down and think about it. A heist movie set in the Star Wars universe sounds bonkers from the get-go. That’s as interesting a concept as Ant-Man was as a heist film for the Marvel Universe. And with the news that Darth Vader will make an appearance in Rogue One,

what more can you ask for? Seeing how we know that in Star Wars: A New Hope the Deathstar was destroyed by Luke Skywalker when he used the blueprints for the metal behemoth, it’ll be cool to see that all tied into Rogue One. Who knows, maybe at the end of the film we’ll get a shot of Luke getting his ship ready to head-out and destroy the Deathstar, which would THEN tie-into the space fight from A New Hope (#ItsAllConnected).

For those that don’t know, Ahmed actually had a pretty great role in Nightcrawler alongside Jake Gyllenhal, which is one of my favorite films to date. So I’m incredibly happy to see that he’s getting more exposure. To me, this shows that not every studio is looking to only cast relatively known actors and actresses in leading roles for feature films. Rogue One‘s casting shows that they are willing to give unknown talent a chance to make a name for themselves in Hollywood, which I’m definitely a fan of. My hope is that we’ll actually get to see the characters from Rogue One pop up in other Star Warsfilms down the line, giving even more opportunities to these actors to leave their mark in a major franchise. 4) No Capes!

6) It’ll Feature A Talented Actress As The Lead Star It’s great that the Star Wars film universe is becoming so diverse, allowing for different people to be attracted to these movies. With the Force Awakens we’ll see a film led by a black actor, and with Rogue One we’ll see a film lead by a woman. Felicity Jones, no less. Plus, instead of following the usual formula where the woman is just one member on a team of colorful characters, she will actually be the team’s leader here. It will be interesting to see what her character stands for as well, as several reports claim that she’ll be the daughter of one Boba Fett. If that’s the case, it could create a great narrative for the writers to explore. She can either side by her father and turn on her team and the Rebel cause, or stand against him. Also, I’m curious if Jones will pop up elsewhere in the Star Wars universe, like in the Han Solo film for example. Perhaps even

So far, from the information we’ve heard about the film, it’s safe to assume that there will not be any Jedi power-players involved with the plot or characters, and that’s a great thing. Why do I say that? Because we’ve had several Star Wars films that revolve around freaks of nature who have telekinetic powers and wield hard light swords that could cut through the hull of a vacation cruise ship. That stuff is cool, don’t get me wrong, but let’s see something different. Rogue One is setting itself apart from the standard Star Wars archetype right from the getgo just by its plot alone. It’s time for some blasters and burnt flesh instead of lightsabers and lungs without oxygen in them (you know, the force choke thing…) 3) Hit Us With That Old-School While I’m all for expanding the Star Wars universe, like the majority of people are, I’m very interested to see us travel back to the time frame of A New Hope, except from a different

Nissan has joined forces with Lucasfilm and recently announced that the 2017 Nissan Rogue: Rogue One Star Wars Limited Edition will be released in conjunction with the film. This limited edition model features a vehicle badge designed in conjunction with Lucasfilm. It’s cutting-edge filmmaking meets innovative automotive technology and is coming soon to a

perspective of everything that shook down after Luke Skywalker got his grubby little fingers on a weapon of destruction. What was the Rebel cause like during that time period? What did Rebel soldiers think of the Jedi order? These are just a few of the questions that I would love for Rogue One to answer once it comes out. And I’m betting that it will.

dealer near you. Only 5,000 available, don’t miss out. The Nissan Rogue, the top-selling model in the Nissan lineup, has been updated for 2017 with fresh exterior and interior treatments and an expanded suite of Nissan Safety Shield technology including available Forward Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection.

with the other Star Wars films, but only because for the most part, they don’t show that the aspect of war and what war can do to people, especially a war that takes place in another galaxy and features soldiers using blaster rifles. Rogue One, however, looks like it will show audiences exactly that, and I can’t wait.

I’m also hoping that Rogue One will pave the way for other Star Wars films to go a bit darker. Can you imagine if we got a Star Wars movie revolving around a cluster of Storm Troopers in the form of Saving Private Ryan?

2) A Gritty Star Wars Film Is Quite Interesting

1) You Can’t Go Wrong With More Of What People Love

I honestly hope that Rogue One will be drastically different tone wise to the Star Wars films that have lead up to it. What I primarily mean is I’d like the film to be The Dirty Dozen meets intergalactic warfare/ espionage. I’d like it to be the chance for Disney to explore the rather dark and slightly depressing side of the war between the Empire and Rebel Cause.

The general consensus for anything Star Wars related is that everybody and their mother absolutely loves it. The films are astonishingly successful and The Force Awakens is tracking to be quite the box office behemoth once it’s released.

This is being stated not because I have an issue

Rogue One is another entry into the Star Wars universe that should easily make some good cash. No one necessarily asked for it, but since it’s here, why not entertain the thought? Of course, anything could happen and the film could turn to garbage, but as of now, we’re pretty freaking excited for Star Wars: Rogue One, and you should be too.

HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA ANNOUNCES

NEW “IONIQ UNLIMITED” SUBSCRIPTION-BASED OWNERSHIP EXPERIENCE Hyundai Motor America announced its new “Ioniq Unlimited” electric vehicle subscription-based ownership experience at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show. This innovative new ownership experience offers a truly worry-free means to drive Hyundai’s newest zero-emission, eco-focused vehicle, the 2017 Ioniq Electric. Ioniq Electric shoppers will be able to select one fixed payment that includes unlimited mileage, electric charging costs, scheduled maintenance, wear items and all typical purchase fees such as registration. The Ioniq Unlimited ownership experience begins availability in California in early 2017. NEW OWNERSHIP EXPERIENCE “We’re excited to offer Ioniq Unlimited as an innovative, worry-free means of clean, zeroemission vehicle ownership along with our new Ioniq Electric vehicle,” said Dean Evans, vice president of marketing, Hyundai Motor America. “This new ownership experience adds to the satisfaction of driving a no-compromise, clean vehicle with unlimited mileage and zero hidden costs. It was time

to make clean vehicle ownership easy for everyone.” Ioniq Unlimited, besides offering a negotiation-free singlepayment method, offers an entirely new concept in vehicle ownership that eco-focused owners will appreciate. It includes a unique online buying experience, where customers can select their exact vehicle from their preferred dealer’s inventory, choose a 24- or 36-month term, and preview their all-inclusive monthly payment online. Once they complete a credit application and are approved, they go directly to the dealership to complete the purchase. Once at the dealer, there’s no

WHAT IS THIS

It’s no secret that in September we bought the Hyundai dealership on Rt. 72 in Manahawkin (right next to Buy-Rite and Surfside Casual Furniture). Once we got over the learning phase of buying a brand new franchise, you can really start learning the new product. Hyundai is one of those brands (just like Honda and Nissan) that had to really work hard to get over some issues like the former build quality and reputation. Believe it or not Honda was once thought of as a “junky” car that you wouldn’t even want for free… now the Accord is the Best car for over 40 years!! Since we at Causeway had to change the way we think of Hyundai, we really like what we see. There is one piece of technology called “Bluelink” that is on most Hyundai vehicles. Hyundai Bluelink is a suite of technologies that is a paid subscription service but is complimentary for one year (on selected models). You get these awesome features: Connected Care, Remote Access, Google Destination Search, and Bluelink for Apple Watch, and Android Wear. Bluelink Connected Care is a feature that works in the event of an accident trained operators are standing by to provide assistance and obtain emergency help. You get Automatic Collision

Remote Access lets you start your Hyundai from anywhere, set the temp, and lock or unlock the doors. Destination Search & Guidance is a feature from Google that will actually look up businesses and get you the directions right on your Smartphone! Smart Apps You can also download the Hyundai Bluelink app for both Apple and Android watches and have full functionality on both devices. Hyundai Bluelink is one of those products just like Ford’s “SYNC Services” where you can access a great deal of information on your vehicle and control important functions. Bluelink is free for one (1) year then you can renew at $99 a year, if you have a Sonata Plug-in Hybrid you get Three (3) years free for all your charging information. Hopefully this shed some light on what Hyundai Bluelink actually does and why it is an important step in maintaining your vehicle.

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY A CAR,

A TRUCK OR EQUIPMENT BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR BEFORE YOU MAKE THE PURCHASE, MAKE SURE THAT YOUR NEW CAR, TRUCK OR EQUIPMENT IS CONSIDERED A TAX WRITE-OFF.

This article is part of the End of Year Tax Tips Series from tax and legal expert Mark J. Kohler.

It’s not uncommon for business owners to make big purchases before year-end to get the tax writeoff. This couldn’t be truer when it comes to buying a car, truck, RV or van for your business. However, making that big purchase isn’t always the best long-term tax decision, not to mention the wisest economic decision. Both are critical issues that I will explore below. Essentially, there are two main options to write off auto expenses: mileage or actual. The mileage method is quite obvious, but the definition of “actual expenses” can get a little complicated. In fact, the actual method can encompass leasing a vehicle, as well fuel, insurance, repairs, maintenance and even depreciation. But before we get into the strategy of strolling into the auto dealership on Dec. 31 to buy that new car or truck, let’s get down the basics. The mileage method On any of your vehicles, you can use mileage as an excellent method to expense the business use of your vehicle. In 2016, potential mileage deductions are as follows: • Business: $0.54/mile • Charity: $0.14/mile • Medical and moving: $0.19/mile • Personal or commuting: No deduction Ninety percent of my tax clients use mileage because it’s simple, easy and a large deduction. For instance, keep in mind that a car payment is not a deduction. When you compare mileage to “actual,” it’s important to understand what is “actually” deductible if you use the actual method. Actual expenses The second method in deducting automobile expenses is to write off actual expenses for the vehicle. You will now need to track your fuel, repairs, maintenance, insurance and tires, as well as “depreciate” the vehicle or a portion of the lease payment if leasing. At first glance, business owners often think that the actual method is a big write-off because they see all of these expenses going out the door with the car payment; however, the car payment amount is irrelevant in the analysis. Thus, you have to bank on the depreciation deduction to make this strategy really pay off, which is drastically limited with cars but can pay off big time with trucks, SUVs, vans and RVs (see below). Also, keep in mind that when you choose to use the actual method, you’re now stuck with his procedure and you can’t use the mileage method again with that car -- there is no going back! Finally, from a bookkeeping standpoint, it’s important to pay for all of the expenses I described above from your business account so that you don’t miss any of them come tax time. Don’t co-mingle the payment of these auto expenses with your personal account. It can be a nightmare to try and dissect. The pros and cons of depreciation Again, the problem with the actual method is that the depreciation expense can be tricky to understand and calculate. It will vary dramatically based on the type of vehicle, and the business use percentage still plays a big factor. For example, depreciation is drastically limited for cars, and even if you buy a big truck, you have to still track mileage to show the percentage you use the vehicle for business. However, it starts to get better and better when the vehicle weighs more than 6,000 pounds. But keep in mind there are different rules for SUVs and the type of truck you may drive. The exciting part is that this depreciation deduction really opens up for large trucks, vans and RVs in certain instances. SUV or truck with a bed that’s less than six feet. Both of these types of vehicles are treated the same for tax purposes. Yes, Congress and the IRS feel that many of these trucks with shorter truck beds are more like SUVs than trucks, thus they fall into the same tax category.

Now, the allowable depreciation for these types of vehicles, on top of actual expenses described above, is that you can take up to $25,000 as a deduction right off the purchase price, whether the truck or SUV is new or used. You also get to take the standard annual depreciation deduction of around $3,000 in the year of purchase. This little $25,000 write-off is often a perfect fit for a business owner looking for one of these types of vehicles, and it can exceed the mileage deduction in the first few years you own the vehicle. ECONOMIC TIP: From a dollars and cents standpoint, this strategy really pays off if you indeed want and need one of these types of vehicles -- and you don’t plan on putting a ton of miles on it or trading in the vehicle in three to four years. But for those of you planning to put on a ton of miles or keep the vehicle longer than the average American, the mileage method will give you more bang for your buck in the long run. Again, keep in mind the business use percentage of the depreciation and all of the actual expenses (fuel, repairs, maintenance, etc.). For example, say you have $20,000 in annual expenses and depreciation, and 80 percent of your use of the vehicle is for business. Thus, you are allowed a

SCAPE 9' LANDDY BO

$16,000 deduction. Moreover, keep in mind that you have show net income in your business. The extra depreciation can’t put you into a “loss” to deduct against other income. YEAR-END TIP: Purchase an SUV or truck for your business and take up to a $25,000 deduction right off the top. Large trucks and vans. If the truck or van weighs more than 6,000 pounds and the truck has a six-foot bed (or greater) or is an enclosed delivery truck, then the $25,000 SUV limitation does not apply. In fact, you can deduct up to $500,000 for the cost of the vehicle in the year of purchase (limited to the business use percentage described previously). Because of the higher cost of these vehicles, it’s much more likely the actual method will far exceed the mileage method in the long run. This is also because the operational costs, such as gas and repairs, can be higher with these more expensive types of vehicles. Though again, keep in mind that these large depreciation deductions in the first year are limited to your net income. Therefore, a more profitable or seasoned business is going to get a better write-off than a company in startup mode that is not showing a profit yet.

levels are related to lower cardiovascular events. One goal is to achieve an LDL level below 70mg/dl. Guidelines from the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association advocate that achieving an LDL cholesterol concentration of <70mg/dl in patients with CHD may stop the progression of coronary atherosclerosis in many patients. An LDL cholesterol goal for very high risk patients is less than 70mg/dl. As individuals work towards managing heart health, one way to assess cardiovascular risk is a CT scan that can detect very small amounts of calcium and blockages in the coronary arteries. Patients who are completely statin intolerant may consider the addition of non-statin cholesterol

lowering therapy. Optional non-statin medications to consider are ezetimibe and PCSK9 inhibitors. PCSK9 inhibitors consistently lower LDL cholesterol greater than 50% in high risk patients. They are well tolerated with no significant adverse effects. Consider non- specific statin therapy only in high risk patients who have inadequate response to statins or statin intolerance. Two new non-statin drugs approved by the FDA for treatment of high LDL cholesterol are Repatha and Praluent.

MEETING GOALS in the Fight against Heart Disease By Dr. Harjinder Bedi

Throughout our lives, people set various goals, and strategies are necessary to accomplish them. This kind of thinking is very important in the management of a variety of medical problems. One such health issue that is very prevalent is Coronary Heart Disease (CHD.) For patients with CHD, lowering cholesterol has shown consistent benefits. Studies have shown, particularly for older individuals, reducing cholesterol helps to reduce events associated with cardiovascular disease, such as CHD. Statins are a type of cholesterol-lowering drugs that are a first line therapy for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. They help to manage LDL cholesterol, which is often called “bad” cholesterol because it causes plaque to build up inside the arteries and leads to heart disease. There is robust evidence to support the fact that older patients with CHD would benefit from lipid lowering drugs like statins. Lower LDL cholesterol
