They need to be smart about what they are allocating funding towards, he adds, so that future generations of families in Ocean County aren’t burdened with a similar tax rate.

any current of future drug problems, but if someone is in need of help they won’t be denied.

Another issue affecting Ocean County and the shore is the health of Barnegat Bay and other shore waterways.

“Barnegat Bay is extremely important to us just like the 44-miles of ocean that we have in Ocean County,” said Vicari. “We have the most ocean in the state of New Jersey and we have to protect that.”

Joseph Vicari Freeholder Director

We saw a number of changes around Ocean County in 2016 from major population growth to economic change, but with 2017 already underway Freeholder Director Joe Vicari lays out some of the goals for this year. Population growth, the economy and our environment are just some of the changes rolling over from 2016 but heading into this year Vicari one of his goals is to ease the fears residents may have on being able to afford living here.

“We have the largest road system, there’s a lot of things to do but I think it’s so important to tell the people of Ocean County that we will make it affordable,”

Vicari explains that a lot of the water we consume in Ocean County comes from ground water so we need to do our part in keeping the waterways healthy.

Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato (Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office)

The war on drugs in one of New Jersey’s most ravaged counties may be at the top of priorities for this year and Vicari explains that they will continue relying on their strengths to find addicts the help they need and lock up the drug lords.

Traffic congestion continues to be a headache for many drivers who call Route 9 their passage way, and Vicari explains that before endorsing a candidate in this years Governors race this may be a topic to ponder.

“Fortunately for us, we have Prosecutor Joe Coronato working with our Sheriff Mike Mastronardy and they’re very in touch with what’s taking place,” said Vicari. “We work very closely with all of the schools and police departments in all of Ocean County.” He adds that they need to continue to be proactive in their approach to eliminate

“The first thing that we should do before anyone is supported, whether democrat or republican…(is ask) ‘what are your plans for Route 9 throughout all of Ocean County?’ ”

The counties population in the winter 580,000 people, Vicari adds, but in the summer that number rises to 1,300,000 people making transportation especially important for drivers in this community.

Check out this year’s Students Change Hunger highlights here and SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!

Students Change Hunger is an annual competition run by the hunger relief organizations in New Jersey challenging all students, staff, teachers and parents to think about hunger in their local community by organizing food drives at their school. The challenge takes place from September through December and the schools who bring in the most food are presented awards by their local food bank.

In New Jersey alone, there are over 1.1 million people who don’t know where their next meal will come from on any given day and 400,000 are children.

In Monmouth and Ocean Counties, there are 132,000 people who are food insecure, including 40,000 children.

ALL-NEW FORD F-150 RAPTOR NAMED

2017 FOUR WHEELER PICKUP TRUCK OF THE YEAR

high in track testing in Southern California, with its high-output EcoBoost® V6 propelling the truck to best-in-field 0-to-60-mph and quarter-mile times.

Add another trophy to the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor showcase. The all-new Raptor topped a sevenvehicle field to be named 2017 FOUR WHEELER Pickup Truck of the Year. Earlier this month, Raptor took home Best Pickup Truck of 2017 honors from Cars.com. “The all-new 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor is the truck equivalent of an amusement park thrill ride,” said Ken Brubaker, FOUR WHEELER editor. “Compared to its predecessor, which also had a very commanding

stance, the new Raptor has more ground clearance and a significantly wider track that makes it look incredibly aggressive. The excitement continues when you fire up the high-output twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine and stab the throttle.” In earning the FOUR WHEELER award, the F-150 Raptor scored high marks in weeklong testing that challenged the truck to harsh conditions including sand, rocky trails and snow covering about 1,000 miles of off-road terrain. Raptor also scored

The purpose-built, off-road Raptor builds on the success of its predecessor with performance gains and new technology that didn’t go unnoticed by FOUR WHEELER judges. With a high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine generating 450 horsepower and 510 lb.-ft. of torque, first-in-class 10-speed transmission, a six-mode Terrain Management System,™ and a high-strength, military-grade, aluminum-alloy body that saves 500 pounds over the previous model, the all-new F-150 Raptor stands alone among highperformance off-road trucks. The 2017 F-150 Raptor’s competition-proven chassis also sets the performance bar with its second-generation BF Goodrich KO2 tires designed exclusively for the truck’s extended off-road capabilities. In addition, upgraded FOX Shocks (jointly engineered by Ford Performance and FOX) are 44 percent larger with 3-inch diameter shock canisters (2.5-inch previously) and nine-stage bypass damping delivering improved suspension control. The new shock design enables an increase in suspension travel to 13-inches at the front and 13.9-inches at the rear (a 0.8-inch front and 1.9inch rear increase in wheel travel compared to its predecessor). -www.media.ford.com

FEBRUARY IS: Heart Healthy Month!

Before you bite it, ask yourself is this food By Deidra Lipowski-Honda worthy of me! Think Sales and former Weight about how long it would Watchers group leader take you to do an activity to burn off what you just ate or what you were thinking about eating. (Keep reading my article for a great example) Does it make you think twice before you make your choice? Here are some heart healthy tips for Valentine’s Day and beyond. 1- Instead of sweets as a gift consider a gift with a lasting impact. Example: Get nice paper and write a love note to make a homemade Valentine. 2- Spending quality one on one time together. “No Cell Phones” Take a walk; Mark it down on your calendar as an appointment for yourselves, so that it happens. Remember do not cancel this very important appointment, for you are worth it. Set a rule if you/ love one cancels the appointment there will be a Cancellation Charge. Now this is where you and your love ones decide on the amount that will be paid when it happens and you have to put a dollar amount in the Cancellation Jar! B:12.25” T:12”

3- Prepare a special meal at home; you are in control no one else. Being in control of how a meal is prepared gives you empowerment. If you think you are not a good enough cook, schedule a cooking class together! You will get time together and also learn new techniques. 4- Set the Stage; at your home for a special date! Put a nice tablecloth on the table, set flowers as your centerpiece, put music on and have it playing in the background and candles are always a hit, light them throughout the rooms! 5- Use the time together to tell your love one how important they are to you. See how the two of you can support heart healthy living. 6- Sweets do not have to be that scrumptious heart filled with chocolate, it can be a beautiful fruit basket. If you do receive the box of chocolates take it SLOW! You can freeze the chocolates, this way it takes longer to eat. I want you to think about this, we just overcame the festivities of the Super Bowl, and survived. Try not to focus on your unhealthy eating patterns but think about the good choices you made this year compared to last year. Try to focus on what you can do to improve your food choices, now, and in the future. It’s time to stop beating yourself up, it’s a new

beginning and now it is on to Valentine’s Day! Close your eyes and visualize a football field for a minute! You now eat 1 M & M. In order to BURN off that 1 M & M you would need to walk the full length of the football field, end of the end zone to the end of the end of the end zone. That is 120 yards that you just walked to BURN off that 1 Plain M & M. If you ate 1 Peanut M & M you would have to walk 2 football fields, 240 yards. Now I don’t know about you but I know I cannot just eat 1 M & M. In a small bag of M & M’s there is approximately 53 M & M’s. That would mean you would have to walk over 3 miles to BURN off that SMALL Bag of Plain M & M’S but the walking distance for a SMALL Bag of Peanut M & M’S would double to over 6 miles!. We have to BURN more calories than we take in to lose weight if we do not do this, this in when we gain weight. It’s up to you to ask for help, no one knows you need help if you do not let them know you do. EVERY DAY IS A CHANCE To Do Something Good for Your Heart

Cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and stroke, is the leading cause of death in the U.S., responsible for one in three deaths every year. Every 30 seconds someone suffers a heart attack, and every 45 seconds, another has a stroke. Both can often occur without warning or symptoms. The good news? Eighty percent of cardiovascular disease is preventable. By knowing your risks and making simple lifestyle changes, heart disease is highly preventable. Mahesh K Tekriwal, M.D., FACC, a cardiologist affiliated with Southern Ocean Medical Center, now part of the Hackensack Meridian Health family, recommends five simple steps to lower your risk of heart disease. 1. Watch your waist, not your weight. A growing waistline can mean more than buying your jeans one size bigger. Dr. Tekriwal says, “The waistline is a good measurement of your overall health, because the amount of fat around your waist is directly linked to high blood pressure and high cholesterol and can increase your risk of diabetes.” 2. Walk your way to better health. To maintain a healthy waistline and reduce your risk of heart disease, Dr. Tekriwal recommends taking a 20 to 30 minute walk, even just a few times a week. This simple exercise can reduce your risk of premature death by more than 50%. An easy breezy 20 to 30 minute walk can help reduce blood pressure and stress, improve cholesterol and sleep and helps to prevent memory loss. 3. Take time to laugh. Did you know that just 15 minutes of laughter results in the same amount cardiovascular benefits of 30 minutes of aerobic exercise? Not only does laughter increase

cardiovascular benefits, research has shown that laughter reduces pain and anxiety, improves health function of blood vessels, and increases brain hormone levels that boost your mood. 4. Get a good night’s sleep. Simply getting an adequate amount of sleep each night will also lead to a healthy heart. Lack of sleep boosts blood pressure, induces stress, increases your appetite, slows your metabolism, dampens your mood and decreases cognition. 5. Partner with your doctor. Lastly, Dr. Tekriwal recommends to speak with your doctor about what numbers are considered normal relative to blood pressure, fasting sugar, BMI, and cholesterol. Knowing your range of healthy numbers will set a target and goal for you to achieve. While it is important to take control of factors that can help reduce the risk of heart disease, it is also equally important to recognize the signs and symptoms of a heart attack. Some signs of a heart attack include: • Chest discomfort (pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain) • Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or shoulders

• Discomfort or pain between the shoulder blades • Shortness of breath • Sweating • Nausea • Indigestion or gas-like pain • Dizziness • Unexplained weakness or fatigue Dr. Tekriwal advises that if you or someone you’re with has chest discomfort, especially with other symptoms, call 9-1-1 and get to a hospital right away. To learn more about signs and risks of cardiovascular disease, visit HackensackMeridianHealth.org/365DaysofHeart.

NANCY RODRIGUEZ

The Head Professor of Causeway Nissan, Ken strolls the campus with a hairstyle that would make President Trump jealous. He claims he doesn’t eat processed food, and won’t touch his chicken wings without wearing rubber gloves. “Safety first!” He claims. Outside of work, you’ll find Ken with his family, trying not to strike out on the softball field, or perfecting his backswing at the bowling alley.

Joe started with Causeway a few years ago, working out of the Ford showroom. He moved to sunny Florida in 2015, then made the puzzling decision to move back to New Jersey. He said it because he “missed the seasons,” but we all know it’s because he missed his Causeway family so much. When he’s not at work, you’ll find him with his family, rooting for the Rangers, or schooling the rest of us on the golf course.

Nancy has been part of the Causeway Family for the past 11 years, and her experience is evident by her vast knowledge and loyal customer base. As a resident of Manahawkin, she is extremely active in the community, volunteering her time with the Rotary and Atlantic Care. When she’s not working or volunteering, Nancy and her husband can be found enjoying the fairer parts of the world on a cruise ship.

DAN MCMAHON

GERALD DANIELS

RODMAN KELLY

Our resident American Idol and songbird of Causeway. Gerry is known to perform Karaoke at Calloway’s and Lefty’s and has quite the local following. Don’t be surprised though, and consider yourself lucky, if he simply belts out a tune when demonstrating a vehicle or appraising your trade-in. Gerry joined the Causeway Family last summer and has thankfully brought his style, flair, and fashion to the floor.

CHARLIE COOPEY

As Ken’s right hand man and Sales Manager of Causeway Nissan, Dan is considered by some to be the quiet one, but don’t underestimate him. He is a strong leader as he guides the younger sales team to success. Recently married, he now enjoys time with his family Jennifer and Zachary, while still managing a few rounds on the golf course. Dan also joined Causeway’s Truck Clubpurchasing his beautiful new F-150. Now he can keep up with Club President Rob Libutti and Vice President Chris Varner.

BETTER:

Causeway’s own R Kelly. Rod is a fixture of the Nissan building and a longtime resident of the area. When Causeway acquired Nissan a while back, we like to say that Rod came with the purchase. He seems quiet and reserved, but he’s always hustling.

You can find him clowning around at Great Adventure during Fright Fest, serving up Jack Daniels chicken strips, or follow his antics on Snapchat. And that’s all when he’s not working his tail off six days a week at Causeway. He has risen the ranks from “lot kid” to AllStar Salesman. Some jokingly refer to him as the Mayor of Manahawkin, because he seems to know everyone.

The vehicles that perform best in the tests qualify for Top Safety Pick which has been awarded since the 2006 model year, or Top Safety Pick+, which was inaugurated in 2013. According to IIHS, to qualify for 2017 Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn good ratings in five crashworthiness tests - small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints - as well as a basic rating for front crash prevention. Also, IIHS says, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the five crashworthiness tests and an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention. The new Lincoln MKX further strengthens Lincoln’s position in the midsize luxury utility segment, one of the largest luxury segments in the U.S., representing about one-quarter of the retail luxury automotive market. The new Lincoln MKZ for 2017 combines intuitive technology, effortless performance and distinctive design to deliver an enhanced driving experience Lincoln calls quiet luxury. The vehicles are available with a suite of intuitive,

driver-assist technologies. Their Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection uses camera and radar technology to monitor the vehicle’s proximity to other vehicles and pedestrians. If a potential collision is detected, the system can alert the driver with visible and audible warnings and, if needed, pre-charge the brakes and increase brake sensitivity to help provide full responsiveness. The lane-keeping system uses a forward-facing camera to detect lane markings. It can apply steering wheel torque and alert the driver with a steering wheel vibration should sensors detect drifting. Both vehicles are equipped with BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with cross-traffic alert uses radar sensors to alert drivers with lights in their sideview mirrors if another vehicle is detected in blind spots. When drivers are backing up, the system can detect a vehicle approaching from either side, notifying drivers with a warning light and an audible tone. An auto hold feature keeps the car at a complete stop without the driver having to press and hold the brake pedal – making stop-and-go driving more relaxing for Lincoln owners. Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection is an available technology that can help avoid some frontal crashes or lessen the severity of such events. -www.media.lincoln.com

PREPARING THE POWER OF DREAMS:

FOR SPRING

This month of February is a short one, but it seems to be the longest with Spring around the corner in March. It’s a good idea to keep busy in the house with some projects. We continue to clean out some clutter anywhere we can, By Donna Stroffolino throwing things away or donating items to Professional Stylist, Simply Hair be repurposed. I’ve gone into a drawer in my desk to get something, and then spent 10 minutes organizing it. Other days I start pulling down some clothes off hangers that I haven’t worn last year and bag them up to donate them. Any free time doing organizing will be rewarded. I can get ready to leave the house quicker when all the items are in place. I can accomplish chores easier when I’m not looking for what I need. These are all great for cold winter days in the house. Now, who do you know that likes to clean out closets on a great Spring Day? No one I know. This month is great to prepare you for Spring activities that are usually outside ones. Since you might be going through some clothes in your closet to donate, it is also a good time to try on the warm weather ones in there. The stores are stocked with spring clothes now. If you want to add a particular item you’d be better off looking soon. Some things need to go, they have been worn out, or they just don’t fit right after too many washings. You can be prepared with a little list of what you might want to add to your wardrobe next time you shop. I sometimes go into my favorite stores with a list of a few items I want to look for, and then actually come home with them. Sometimes when we shop without a purpose we bring home duplicated items that don’t add to your selection. February is also a great time to read up on your spring and summer gardening goals. My friends that are avid gardeners are planning what they want to grow this year. They know what worked for them last season, and what they want to add. Perennial plants get overgrown and need to be separated and moved around your property. The plants that didn’t do well in one place can do great in another spot. I also like to plan a few flower pots instead of doing plantings in the ground. They are good for flowers, herbs or strawberries too. Ask a friend who has that green thumb to give you their advice if you need it. Great flower and vegetable gardens don’t happen overnight. The prep work is time well spent. This time of the year is also great for getting your outdoor items checked. As soon as we get a nice warm day, the outdoor toys are out. And who likes to be disappointed that the bike needed some repairs, and the balls all got deflated. We like to get out to play or just hop on that bike and go! That cute little convertible or motorcycle in your garage that’s saved for a great warm day needs some attention too. Getting it into service and all cleaned up is also time well rewarded. Now you are ready to go out and have some fun in the fresh air!

Honda Rolls Out the Red Carpet for America’s Best-Selling SUV; Celebrating 20 Years of CR-V

Honda is debuting the brand’s Super Bowl LI commercial, with the all-new 2017 Honda CR-V taking a star turn alongside a collection of some of the world’s biggest stars from film, television, music, sports and even comic books. Scheduled to run in the first break during the second quarter of the big game on Sunday, Feb. 5, the automaker’s new :60 spot “Yearbooks,” takes viewers back in time through a look at the high-school dreams of famous celebrities before they were household names, and the spirit that drove them to chase those dreams. As the CR-V turns 20, Honda wants to remind viewers of “The Power of Dreams,” and how it has inspired the vehicle’s evolution into the best-selling SUV in America. “Yearbooks” is now available to watch in its entirety on Honda’s YouTube channel: www.honda.us/BigGameAd. “The Power of Dreams” is a belief that drives everything Honda creates, which speaks to the imagination of big dreams, along with the determination to make those dreams come true. Honda has called on celebrities Amy Adams, Steve Carell, Viola Davis, Missy Elliott, Tina Fey, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Jimmy Kimmel, Stan Lee and Robert Redford to introduce the all-new 2017 CR-V, 20 years after the popular SUV was first introduced during Super Bowl XXXI. Each celebrity provides insight into their journeys toward success, reflected through their high-school yearbook photos. Just as the CR-V was once the new kid on the block before becoming America’s best-selling SUV, all of the stars featured in “Yearbooks” began with a dream and the determination to achieve it. “Since its introduction in 1997, CR-V has set the standard for efficiency, practicality and driving fun, becoming a customer favorite and taking the title as America’s best-selling SUV over the past two decades,” said Susie Rossick, assistant vice president, Honda Auto Marketing. “To celebrate the all-new, fifth-generation CR-V, we wanted to share inspiring stories that bring to life what we mean when we talk about The Power of Dreams.” Bringing “Yearbooks” to Life Created and produced by RPA, agency of record for Honda, the spot was crafted using cutting-edge technology to bring the high-school yearbook images to life. effects enables each celebrity photo in “Yearbooks” to tell a story in a unique and mesmerizing way. Honda in the Big Game The new spot signals Honda’s return to the big game following last year’s highly successful “A New Truck to Love” ad that introduced the new Ridgeline pickup through Queen’s iconic “Somebody to Love,” generating more than 100,000 handraisers for Honda’s innovative new truck. 2017 marks the third appearance for CR-V during a Super Bowl. The first-generation CR-V appeared in Super Bowl XXXI in 1997, with the previous generation CR-V showcased in a 2012 commercial paying homage to a well-known coming-of-age characterin “Matthew’s Day Off.” The spot was a big hit four years ago and became one of the most talked-about Super Bowl ads even before it aired during the game. CR-V Gets Social Leading up to the debut of “Yearbooks,” Honda released a short teaser spot starring Steve Carell (https://twitter.com/Honda/ status/826429866127921156) on Facebook and Twitter. As part of the #PowerOfDreams socialmedia campaign, the stars of “Yearbooks” and social influencers will inspire others to follow their dreams, leading up to and throughout the big game. On #TBT (Throwback Thursday), Thurs., Feb. 2, celebrities from the spot as well as ten other influencers—from professional athletes and musicians to food tastemakers and comedians—will share their younger selves and tell their stories of overcoming obstacles, taking risks and persevering to pursue their dreams, as well as encourage others to share their own stories on social media. On Twitter, between Thursday and Super Bowl Sunday, celebrities from the “Yearbooks” spot and influencers will “dream it forward” and personally reach out with advice to people who have hit bumps in the road on the way to achieving their dreams. 2017 CR-V Campaign Following the big game, an integrated campaign continues the theme of achieving dreams through TV, digital banners, out of home, radio, print advertising and social campaigns. The big game campaign will also include homepage takeovers on ESPN, Amazon and Yahoo!. -www.hondanews.com
