On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.

Two River’s Latino outreach programs are geared toward making the experience of theater, and our work here in Red Bank, accessible to all audiences. We give to those who don’t always see themselves reflected in mainstream popular culture, a mirror in which to see themselves on stage. We are grateful to be a beneficiary of the annual HOPE 9, which will help Two River continue our work of producing plays by Latino writers; hosting free public events, including activities for families; and making available free tickets to mainstage performances through our community outreach partnerships.”

make a difference in our community,” said longtime HOPE concert organizer Bobby Bandiera. “This year, I couldn’t be more pleased that we’ll be helping the Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties and the Latino programming and outreach efforts at the Two River Theater.”
“The FoodBank’s mission is to ensure that Hunger Won’t Win Here,” said Carlos Rodriguez, Executive Director of the Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. “Proceeds from HOPE 9 will go directly toward food and programs that feed the hungry in this community. The FoodBank has 300 feeding programs in Monmouth and Ocean Counties and approximately 70 of them are within 10 miles of Red Bank. Our partners include pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and group homes, and our goal is always to ensure that all families have access to enough nutritious food for an active and healthy life.”
Past HOPE concert performers have included Jon Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Deborah Harry of Blondie, Southside Johnny, Nicole Atkins, Gary U.S. Bonds, John Cafferty, Richie “La Bamba” Rosenberg, Brian Fallon and the late Ben E. King. As is tradition, Holiday Express founder Tim McLoone and his band, The Shirleys, will open the show with a set of holiday favorites.
Though the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, November 11 remained in the public imagination as the date that marked the end of the Great War. In November 1919, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. The day’s observation included parades and public gatherings, as well as a brief pause in business activities at 11 continued on pg 14 a.m.
HOPE CONCERT 9 FOR FRIDAY, DECEMBER 23 AT THE
HISTORIC COUNT BASIE THEATRE
Bobby Bandiera & Friends return to the Count Basie Theatre on Friday, December 23, 2016 for HOPE CONCERT 9, slated this year to benefit The Foodbank Of Monmouth and Ocean Counties and the Latino outreach programs at Red Bank’s Two River Theater. In addition, $10 from every ticket sold will go towards the Basie’s arts initiative in collaboration with Red Bank Borough Middle School to bring the arts to every child. Tickets, priced from $50 to $500, go on sale to the general public on Friday, October 7th at noon through www.TheBASIE.org, theatre phone charge at 732-842-9000 and the Basie box office, located onsite at 99 Monmouth Street in Red Bank. “Every year, we get together at the Basie in the name of HOPE to raise awareness and money for worthwhile organizations that
“The promise of hope is essential to the art of theater,” says Two River Theater Artistic Director John Dias. “We strive not only to reflect the world in which we live but also to show people what’s possible.
“Bobby and his friends continue to demonstrate the art of generosity by bringing hope to much needed organizations,” said Count Basie Theatre President and CEO, Adam Philipson. “The Hope concerts are a staple of the Basie’s benefit shows. This year’s recipients are two extremely deserving organizations.”

The United States Armed Forces are the federal armed forces of the United States. They consist of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. The President of the United States is the military’s overall head, and helps form military policy with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), a federal executive department, acting as the principal organ by which military policy is carried out. From the time of its inception, the military played a decisive role in the history of the United States. A sense of national unity and identity was forged as a result of victory in the First Barbary War and the Second Barbary War. Even so, the Founders were suspicious of a permanent military force. It played an important role in the American Civil War, where leading generals on both sides were picked from members of the United States military. Not until the outbreak of World War II did a large standing army become officially established. The National Security Act of 1947, adopted following World War II and during the Cold War’s onset, created the modern U.S. military framework; the Act merged previously Cabinet-level Department of War and the Department of the Navy into the National Military Establishment (renamed the
Department of Defense in 1949), headed by the Secretary of Defense; and created the Department of the Air Force and National Security Council. The U.S. military is one of the largest militaries in terms of number of personnel. It draws its personnel from a large pool of paid volunteers; although conscription has been used in the past in various times of both war and peace, it has not been used since 1972. As of 2016, the United States spends about $580.3 billion annually to fund its military forces and Overseas Contingency Operations.[4] Put together, the United States constitutes roughly 40 percent of the world’s military expenditures. For the period 2010–14, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) found that the United States was the world’s largest exporter of major arms, accounting for 31 per cent of global shares. The United States was also the world’s eighth largest importer of major weapons for the same period. The U.S. military has significant capabilities in both defense and power projection due to its large budget, resulting in advanced and powerful equipment, and its widespread deployment of force around the world, including about 800 military bases in foreign locations.

TIPS TO REFRESH YOUR
LOOK FOR FALL
By: Donna Stroffolino, Professional Stylist We all enjoy this wonderful Fall season here in Jersey with the beauty of the trees and the fresh crisp air. It is also a time when we are used to wearing multiple outfits in one day with the fluctuation in the daily temperature. With this type of weather I wouldn’t put away your short sleeved and sleeveless shirts just yet. It is a season of layering. Those lighter shirts come in handy as your base layer, then adding on a long sleeve shirt or light sweater too. There is also some type of top layer needed for being outside in the morning or evening. Our mornings are chilly in the 40s, and the midday can be in the 70s. Living here I think my car has a few jackets and extra shoes in it at all times. But we all love being here in the Fall!
I like to keep all my light scarves tied on a hanger in the coat closet so I can grab one to coordinate with my outfit. It will brighten up your face and it keeps your neck warm at the same time. Those bulky winter jackets can stay in the closet for a little longer. There are endless sweaters, wraps and ponchos to choose from every Fall. It’s funny how the styles keep coming back from so many years ago. I see shapes and fabrics now that were popular when I was a teenager. It is a good idea to hold on to key pieces you love through the years. They may be trendy today, but usually they are classics that came back again. This year cozy blanket type jackets and ponchos are popular too. They are easy to layer on top and make you look stylish too. Big long sweaters are in so many colors and also remind me of trends from the 70s too.
I often hear women say they would rather wear sweats and a hoodie to be comfortable. You can have an easy outfit Freshening up your with jeans and a top personal style each season and sweater and be can just be a few simple comfortable too. It takes things. THE 2016 FORD FOCUS ECOBOOST… HUH?
By: Jason Halliday
When you hear Focus “Ecoboost” you probably think I am talking about the awesome ST or the jaw dropping RS… but you would be wrong! I am talking about the Ford Focus SE “Ecoboost” and the engine that has won Wards top engines award 3 years running. I’m talking about the 1.0 liter 3 cylinder engine…*queue cricket sound now*. I know, I know… but hear me out and you might learn something! This engine is in almost every Ford model across the pond for a reason. Here where we complain about a .23 cent gas increase they are paying close to $10 a liter! So small is in, depending where you live. I actually drove this car home one night (mostly because my wife thought it was “Cute”). So here’s how it went. I just finish putting the plate securely to the back of the car and I get in and adjust everything accordingly and fire up the beast… Upon first ignition I could have sworn I was in a diesel. Just a faint throaty rumble and an engine note a lot deeper than a four cylinder (it sounds more like a v6 than a 4 banger). I put it in gear and wait for nothing to happen but I actually start pulling out of the space just as effortlessly as my
Fusion does. I think to myself this is just a fluke and it’s going to fail once I pull onto 72. Nope this little engine that could roared to life and I instantly felt the wonderful pulling of the turbo and I started laughing hysterically. What were the odds that this small 3 cylinder engine could be so fun to drive? More to the point, how does Ford do it! Ford has no sense of humor when it comes to their Ecoboost engines. Like the others, this one is made and designed in Cologne Germany. It has direct injection with Bosch High pressure fuel injectors, dual overhead cams with triple Variable Valve Timing; the headers are also forged as one piece to the manifold and are curved in such a way to build up a lot of pressure to spin the low inertia turbo at over 200,000rpm’s. Plus being the size of a sewing machine is pretty impressive. On the outside Ford made it look, just like the other Focus models (you can only tell from the “EcoBoost” badge), they didn’t give it weird wheels or a green tea color scheme to make it stand out. If you are looking for super speed than this isn’t for you! Its 123hp and 148tq (using overboost). If you
want speed get the ST, if you want good fuel economy than look at this 29city / 40 highway. Unlike a lot of cars, this will actually get 40+ mpg. My trip home to Smithville had the instant MPG getting 53 with cruise control on. Not to mention it handles like a go kart, it was actually quite fun going around the exit ramp thanks to Torque Vectoring Control (standard on all Focus models) and the good road feel on the steering. This model would be great for someone that wanted good MPG numbers without having a hybrid. If you are looking for a comfortable compact / small midsize car with the newest technology than you owe it to yourself to open up your mind and take a look. By the way… If you are wondering, she ended up taking the car!
MORE MILES PER GALLON: causeway FORD F-150 FUEL ECONOMY IMPROVES WITH ALL-NEW ECOBOOST ENGINE AND 10-SPEED TRANSMISSION
Ford, America’s truck leader, continues its relentless pace of innovation and performance, helping customers get better mileage out of each gallon of gas in the 2017 Ford F-150. Thanks to the all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6 engine mated to the first volume-production 10-speed automatic transmission, EPA-estimated city, highway and combined fuel economy increase 1 mpg, with the combined rating for 2017 F-150 4x4 up 2 mpg. In addition, F-150 customers benefit from improved acceleration, performance and refinement delivered by the 3.5-liter EcoBoost and state-ofthe-art 10-speed automatic transmission. This new powertrain combination provides better low-end and peak performance, which is ideal for hauling heavy payloads and towing heavy trailers. All-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 This second-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine delivers 50 lb.-ft. more peak torque compared with the first-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost, for a segment-best 470 lb.-ft. – beating all diesel- and gasoline-powered competitors including V8 engines with nearly twice the displacement. Horsepower jumps 10 over the previous version, for a total of 375 horsepower. The all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost leverages the best attributes of the first-generation design – power, reliability and efficiency – improving in almost every aspect. This includes a new twin-port and directinjection fuel strategy, lighter and stronger crank and valvetrain components, redesigned twin turbocharger with electronic wastegate, and redesigned valvetrain and variable-displacement oil pump. The all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost builds on the success of the 2.7-liter EcoBoost and first-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost – which account for approximately 60 percent of F-150 sales. F-150 remains the only truck in its segment to offer a twin-turbocharged gasoline engine. With 1 million-plus Ford EcoBoostequipped trucks on the road, F-150 owners will save

NISSAN MURANO NAMED “BEST MIDSIZE SUV OF 2016” BY CARS.COM AND MOTORWEEK After putting five leading midsize sport utility vehicles through a demanding testing process, Cars. com and MotorWeek have selected the 2016 Nissan Murano as the “Best Midsize SUV of 2016.” The award follows the naming of the Nissan TITAN XD and Nissan Rogue last January as Cars.com’s “Best Pickup Truck of 2016” and “Family Car of the Year” respectively. “The Murano is the closest option to a luxury SUV in this group, with a level of cabin materials and styling flair that’s largely missing among the others,” said Cars.com Editor-in-Chief Patrick Olsen. “The Murano’s high points extend beyond its quality interior. The SUV is packed with technology and family-friendly features, and thanks to its V-6 power, the Murano is a blast to drive.” The contenders selected for the “Midsize SUV Challenge,” in addition to Murano, were the 2016 Ford Edge, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Kia Sorento and the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. Testing combined editors’ evaluations on a set course, documentation of real world fuel economy and testing by an in-market family. Detailed test results are available at cars.com/news. “Murano has become a favorite of awards juries and consumers alike since the introduction of the totally redesigned third-generation Murano for the 2015 model year,” said Dan Mohnke, vice president, Nissan Chief Marketing Manager & Marketing Operations. “The Cars.com award is another great honor, adding to the 2015-2016 Murano crossover’s streak of winning more awards over the last two years than any other SUV in its class1.” Sales of Murano are up 35 percent this year to date. The 2016 Murano carries forward new Nissan design direction with V-Motion front end, boomerang lights, floating roof treatment and efficient aerodynamics. Inside, the Murano offers an engaging social lounge feel through features such as the refined lower-height instrument panel,
wide center console, advanced Zero Gravity seating, and through the airy atmosphere created by the large windows and oversized Power Panoramic Moonroof. “SUVs are the family vehicle of choice in 2016, and the midsize category is one of the most popular with shoppers. This class of vehicles remains incredibly competitive, so we want to give shoppers a clear understanding of the best, worst and each option’s value proposition,” added Olsen. About the 2016 Nissan Murano The halo vehicle for Nissan’s wide range of bold crossovers and SUVs, the 2016 Murano expresses Nissan’s advanced design direction – including its V-motion front end, LED boomerang lights and the unique “floating” roof. The stunning exterior design carries into the interior, which offers an engaging social lounge feel through features such as the refined instrument panel, low center console, advanced Zero Gravity front and outboard rear seating, and through the airy atmosphere created by the large windows and oversized Power Panoramic Moonroof. When the guests around your Thanksgiving table are busy stuffing their bellies today, here’s one way to break the lull in conversation: dazzle them with some tasty turkey trivia. Here’s 10 to get you started. We bet you they’ll eat them up! 1. A tradition is born: TV dinners have Thanksgiving to thank. In 1953, someone at Swanson misjudged the number of frozen turkeys it would sell that Thanksgiving -- by 26 TONS! Some industrious soul came up with a brilliant plan: Why not slice up the meat and repackage with some trimmings on the side? Thus, the first TV dinner was born! 2. Going shopping?: Not if you’re a plumber. Black Friday is the busiest day of the year for them, according to Roto-Rooter, the nation’s largest plumbing service. After all, someone has to clean up after household guests who “overwhelm the system.” 3. This land is my land: There are four places in the U.S. named Turkey. Louisiana’s Turkey Creek is
the most populous, with a whopping 440 residents. There’s also Turkey, Texas; Turkey, North Carolina; and Turkey Creek, Arizona. Oh, let’s not forget the two townships in Pennsylvania: the creatively named Upper Turkeyfoot and Lower Turkeyfoot! 4. Leaving a legacy: When Abe Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday, it was thanks to the tireless efforts of a magazine editor named Sarah Josepha Hale. Her other claim to fame? She also wrote the nursery rhyme, “Mary had a Little Lamb.” 5. Gobble, gobble?: Not so fast. Only male turkeys, called toms, gobble. Females, called hens, cackle. 6. Have it your way: If Ben Franklin did, the turkey would be our national bird. An eagle, he wrote in a letter to his daughter, had “bad moral character.” A turkey, on the other hand, was a “much more respectable bird.” 7. Born in the U.S.A.: Thanksgiving is not just an American holiday. Canadians celebrate it too. Except

they do it the second Monday in October. 8. Break out the menurkeys: The first day of Hanukkah and Thanksgiving come together today for the first time since 1888. Scientists say the confluence won’t occur again for another 70,000 years, give or take a millennium. 9. Doomed from birth: Those poor turkeys; they don’t stand a chance. Just look at the name we gave them. A turkey less than 12-weeks-old is called a fryer-roaster. 10. Talking turkey: Why is it called a turkey? Oh boy, this will take some explainin’. Back in the day, the Europeans took a liking to the guinea fowls imported to the continent. Since the birds were imported by Turkish merchants, the English called them turkeys. Later, when the Spaniards came to America, they found a bird that tasted like those guinea fowls. When they were sent to Europe, the English called these birds “turkeys” as well.

The first 100 days of a Trump presidency
Donald Trump has promised that as president he will honour the pledge stitched into his white and red baseball caps: Make America Great Again. The former television entertainer’s campaign has been a roller coaster of triumphs and pitfalls, but his love for hyperbole has never wavered. With him in the White House, Mr Trump has said, his supporters are going to “win so big” they will soon be “sick of winning”. When it comes to mapping out the details of a Trump presidency, the Republican candidate has been no less extravagant. It is customary in American presidential elections that a candidate sets out a vision for their first term in the Oval office. But ever keen to be “the greatest”, Mr Trump has slashed the timeline of his proposals from 100 days to one. At an address delivered in historic Gettysburg last month, Mr Trump laid out a “contract with the American people” that would begin with a “very busy first day”. He proceeded to detail 24-hours designed to erase traces of Barack Obama’s presidency and set America on a protectionist, nativist, track. Immigration Mr Trump’s rhetoric on immigration came to define his presidential campaign. Though slightly more carefully worded, his proposal once in office remains some of the most divisive legislation on the issue. He has quietly dropped his call to remove all undocumented immigrants from the US, a move that, aside from being so impractical it might be impossible, experts have warned would damage the US economy by taking too many people out of the labour market. Instead he would immediately begin the process of deporting illegal immigrants with criminal records. Recent studies estimate there are fewer than 168,000 such people in the United States. But Mr Trump put the number at some two million, suggesting his calculations of “criminals”, people who have had minor run-ins with the law, such as getting a speeding ticket. He will also “suspend immigration from terrorprone regions where vetting cannot safely occur”. Though the terminology is vague, Syria would almost certainly be on this list. Mr Trump has claimed that the government “does not know” who the refugees it lets in are from the country, despite their being scrutinised for up to two years before being allowed to enter the US. And last but not least there is the wall. This would not happen on his first day, he admits, but eventually a Trump administration would push through legislation “build a wall” along the southern border of the United States and make Mexico bear the costs. He has not however, explained in detail how this would happen. Reform Washington Donald Trump has promised to “drain the swamp” of big money Washington politics. In one of his most popular campaign pitches, he has said he will “reduce the corrupting influence of special interests”. Speaking in Gettysburg, at the site where in 1863 Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous speech to unite Americans, Mr Trump sought to mimic the legendary leader, promising to reinstate a government “of, by and for the people”. His day one reforms include a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on all members of congress and a five-year ban on White House and Congressional officials becoming lobbyists after they leave government service. In an effort to shrink the size of government the nominee called for a hiring freeze on all federal employees to reduce its workforce through attrition (exempting military, public safety, and public health). Trade A Trump presidency would break from the traditional Republican commitment to free trade, imposing a set of protectionist policies to close America’s economic borders.

He will immediately announce his intention to “renegotiate” the North American Free Trade agreement with Canada and Mexico. He would cancel participation in the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a controversial trade arrangement with 12 countries. The pact aims to deepen economic ties between these nations, slashing tariffs and fostering trade to boost growth. But critics argue that it will also also intensify competition between countries’ labour forces. Foreign Policy Donald Trump has said that as president he may not guarantee protection to fellow NATO countries who come under attack. In an interview just before the Republican convention Mr Trump said America would help only if that country had fulfilled its “obligations” within the alliance. It marked the first time in post-World War Two era that a candidate for president suggested putting conditions on America’s defense of its key allies. Advocating an ultra “America first” view of the world Mr Trump has also threatened to withdraw troops from Europe and Asia if those allies fail to pay more for American protection. Mr Trump has flip-flopped on key issues including Syria. Most recently the candidate implied that he sees Bashar al-Assad, the country’s dictator, as the lesser evil when compared with US backed rebel opposition groups, some of whom have Islamist leanings. He has promised to “bomb the hell” out of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. Energy and the environment In a deeply disappointing development for environmentalists, Mr Trump plans to cancel billions of dollars in payments to the United Nations climate change programs. He has said he would redirect the funds to pay for infrastructure projects in the US. He has also promised to lift restrictions on fracking and boost American oil and natural gas production. He would lift roadblocks to the Keystone Pipeline. Environmental activists fought hard to convince the Obama administration to stop the infrastructure project, warning against the effects of the increase in oil production. Its path between Alberta, Canada and Nebraska in the United States was also said to damage fragile ecosystems. Wipe Barack Obama from the history books One of Mr Trump’s first actions will be to try to erase the effects of Mr Obama’s presidency. The Republican candidate has promised to cancel every “executive action, memorandum and order issued by President Obama”. According to Stephen Moore, an official campaign adviser, the campaign has sought to identify “maybe twenty-five executive orders” that their candidate could reverse: “Trump spends several hours signing papers—and erases the Obama Presidency,” he said. Chief among them is the Affordable Care Act. Also known as “Obamacare”, the president’s signature policy has brought health insurance to some 12.7 million people who would have struggled to afford medical cover. But it has also pushed up insurance premiums for Americans not on government assistance. Mr Trump would replace this with another system, the “Health Savings Accounts”. This plan would give more power to states over how to handle funds. But beyond that critics have said that the Trump campaign has failed to explain how it differs significantly from Mr Obama’s healthcare plan, and how they would implement it. Like with much of his presidential campaign, Mr Trump appears to be asking the American people to trust him and wait and see. -www.telegraph.co.uk

2017 LINCOLN MKZ EARNS
TOP SAFETY RATING FROM INSURANCE INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY
The 2017 Lincoln MKZ has earned the highest safety award issued by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety – due in part to its front crash prevention system. To earn the agency’s Top Safety Pick+ award, a vehicle must have superior ratings in its small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, and roof strength and head restraint tests. It also must have an available front crash prevention system that earns an advanced or superior rating. Lincoln MKZ is available with an optional front crash prevention system that earns a superior rating. Also helping Lincoln MKZ earn a Top Safety Pick+ are modifications to its front-end structure that boost the vehicle’s small overlap front rating and front crash prevention system. The small overlap front test represents a frontal crash in which only a small portion of the vehicle’s front end is involved. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety track tests, MKZ avoided collisions at 12 mph and 25 mph. The car also has a forward collision warning component that meets National Highway Traffic Safety Administration criteria. The 2017 Lincoln MKZ also is available with a suite of intuitive, driver-assist technologies. Its Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection uses camera and radar technology to monitor the vehicle’s proximity to other vehicles and pedestrians. If a potential collision is detected, the system can alert the driver with visible and audible
warnings and, if needed, pre-charge the brakes and increase brake sensitivity to help provide full responsiveness. The lane-keeping system uses a forward-facing camera to detect lane markings. It can apply steering wheel torque and alert the driver with a steering wheel vibration should sensors detect drifting. Finally, BLIS® (Blind Spot Information
System) with cross-traffic alert uses radar sensors to alert drivers with lights in their sideview mirrors if another vehicle is detected in Lincoln MKZ’s blind spots. When drivers are backing up, the system can detect a vehicle approaching from either side, notifying drivers with a warning light and an audible tone. -www.media.lincoln.com

BLACK HISTORY OF THANKSGIVING FALL 2016
FRIDAY
Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States. Since 1932, it has been regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the U.S., and most major retailers open very early (and more recently during overnight hours) and offer promotional sales. Black Friday is not an official holiday, but California and some other states observe “The Day After Thanksgiving” as a holiday for state government employees, sometimes in lieu of another federal holiday such as Columbus Day. Many nonretail employees and schools have both Thanksgiving and the following Friday off, which, along with the following regular weekend, makes it a four-day weekend, thereby increasing the number of potential shoppers. It has routinely been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005, although news reports, which at that time were inaccurate, have described it as the busiest shopping day of the year for a much longer period of time. Similar stories resurface year upon year at this time, portraying hysteria and shortage of stock, creating a state of positive feedback. In 2014, spending volume on Black Friday fell for the first time since the 2008 recession. $50.9 billion was spent during the 4-day Black Friday weekend, down 11% from the previous year. However, the U.S. economy was not in a recession. Christmas creep has been cited as a factor in the diminishing importance of Black Friday, as many retailers now spread out their promotions over the entire months of November and December rather than concentrate them on a single shopping day or weekend. The earliest evidence of the phrase Black Friday applied to the day after Thanksgiving in a shopping context suggests that the term originated in Philadelphia, where it was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. This usage dates to at least 1961. More than twenty years later, as the phrase became more widespread, a popular explanation became that this day represented the point in the year when retailers begin to turn a profit, thus going from being “in the red” to being “in the black”. For many years, it was common for retailers to open at 6:00 a.m., but in the late 2000s many had crept to 5:00 or 4:00. This was taken to a new extreme in 2011, when several retailers (including Target, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Best Buy, and Beallsopened at midnight for the first time. In 2012, Walmart and several other retailers announced that they would open most of their stores at 8:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, prompting calls for a walkout among some workers. In 2014, stores such as JCPenney, Best Buy, and Radio Shack opened at 5:00 PM on Thanksgiving Day while stores such as Target, Walmart, Belk, and Sears opened at 6:00 PM on Thanksgiving Day. Three states, Rhode Island, Maine, and Massachusetts, prohibit large supermarkets, big box stores, and department stores from opening on Thanksgiving, due to blue laws. There have been reports of violence occurring between shoppers on Black Friday. Since 2006, there have been 7 reported deaths and 98 injuries throughout the United States. It is common for prospective shoppers to camp out over the Thanksgiving holiday in an effort to secure a place in front of the line and thus a better chance at getting desired items. This poses a significant safety risk (such as the use of propane and generators in the most elaborate cases, and in general, the blocking of emergency access and fire lanes, causing at least one city to ban the practice.) Black Friday is a shopping day for a combination of reasons. As the first day after the last major holiday before Christmas, it marks the unofficial beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Additionally, many employers give their employees the day off as part of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. In order to take advantage of this, virtually all retailers in the country, big and small, offer various sales including limited amounts of doorbuster/doorcrasher/doorsmasher items to entice traffic. Recent years have seen retailers extend beyond normal hours in order to maintain an edge, or to simply keep up with the competition. Such hours may include opening as early as 12:00 am or remaining open overnight on Thanksgiving Day and beginning sale prices at midnight. In 2010, Toys ‘R’ Us began their Black Friday sales at 10:00 pm on Thanksgiving Day and further upped the ante by offering free boxes of Crayola crayons and coloring books for as long as supplies lasted. Other retailers, like Sears, Express, MK, Victoria’s Secret, Zumiez, Tilly’s, American Eagle Outfitters, Nike, Jordan, Puma, Aéropostale, and Kmart, began Black Friday sales early Thanksgiving morning, and ran them through as late as 11:00 pm Friday evening. Forever 21 went in the opposite direction, opening at normal hours on Friday, and running late sales until 2:00 am Saturday morning. Historically, it was common for Black Friday sales to extend throughout the following weekend. However, this practice has largely disappeared in recent years, perhaps because of an effort by retailers to create a greater sense of urgency.
In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November. THANKSGIVING AT PLYMOUTH In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers—an assortment of religious separatists seeking a new home where they could freely practice their faith and other individuals lured by the promise of prosperity and land ownership in the New World. After a treacherous and uncomfortable crossing that lasted 66 days, they dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination at the mouth of the Hudson River. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village at Plymouth. Did You Know?
Lobster, seal and swans were on the Pilgrims’ menu. Throughout that first brutal winter, most of the colonists remained on board the ship, where they suffered from exposure, scurvy and outbreaks of contagious disease. Only half of the Mayflower’s original passengers and crew lived to see their first New England spring. In March, the remaining settlers moved ashore, where they received an astonishing visit from an Abenaki Indian who greeted them in English. Several days later, he returned with another Native American, Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe who had been kidnapped by an English sea captain and sold into slavery before escaping to London and returning to his homeland on an exploratory expedition. Squanto taught the Pilgrims, weakened by malnutrition and illness, how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants. He also helped the settlers forge an alliance with the Wampanoag, a local tribe, which would endure for more than 50 years and tragically remains one of the sole examples of harmony between European colonists and Native Americans. In November 1621, after the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast and invited a group of the fledgling colony’s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. Now remembered as American’s “first Thanksgiving”—although the Pilgrims themselves may not have used the term at the time—the festival lasted for three days. While no record exists of the historic banquet’s exact menu, the Pilgrim chronicler Edward Winslow wrote in his journal that Governor Bradford sent four men on a “fowling” mission in preparation for the event, and that the Wampanoag guests arrived bearing five deer. Historians have suggested that many of the dishes were likely prepared using traditional Native American spices and cooking methods. Because the Pilgrims had no oven and the Mayflower’s sugar supply had dwindled by the fall of 1621, the meal did not feature pies, cakes or other desserts, which have become a hallmark of contemporary celebrations. THANKSGIVING BECOMES AN OFFICIAL HOLIDAY Pilgrims held their second Thanksgiving celebration in 1623 to mark the end of a long drought that had threatened the year’s harvest and prompted Governor Bradford to call for a religious fast. Days of fasting and thanksgiving on an annual or occasional basis became common practice in other New England settlements as well. During the American Revolution, the Continental Congress designated one or more days of thanksgiving a year, and in 1789 George Washington issued the first Thanksgiving proclamation by the national government of the United States; in it, he called upon Americans to express their gratitude for the happy conclusion to the country’s war of independence and the successful ratification of the U.S. Constitution. His successors John Adams and James Madison also designated days of thanks during their presidencies. In 1817, New York became the first of several states to officially adopt an annual Thanksgiving holiday; each celebrated it on a different day, however, and the American South remained largely unfamiliar with the tradition. In 1827, the noted magazine editor and prolific writer Sarah Josepha Hale—author, among countless other things, of the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb”—launched a campaign to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday. For 36 years, she published numerous editorials and sent scores of letters to governors, senators, presidents and other
a r a S rie Ma
politicians. Abraham Lincoln finally heeded her request in 1863, at the height of the Civil War, in a proclamation entreating all Americans to ask God to “commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife” and to “heal the wounds of the nation.” He scheduled Thanksgiving for the final Thursday in November, and it was celebrated on that day every year until 1939, when Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the holiday up a week in an attempt to spur retail sales during the Great Depression. Roosevelt’s plan, known derisively as Franksgiving, was met with passionate opposition, and in 1941 the president reluctantly signed a bill making Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November. THANKSGIVING TRADITIONS
In many American households, the Thanksgiving celebration has lost much of its original religious significance; instead, it now centers on cooking and sharing a bountiful meal with family and friends. Turkey, a Thanksgiving staple so ubiquitous it has become all but synonymous with the holiday, may or may not have been on offer when the Pilgrims hosted the inaugural feast in 1621. Today, however, nearly 90 percent of Americans eat the bird—whether roasted, baked or deep-fried— on Thanksgiving, according to the National Turkey Federation. Other traditional foods include stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Volunteering is a common Thanksgiving Day activity, and communities often hold food drives and host free dinners for the less fortunate. Parades have also become an integral part of the holiday in cities and towns across the United States. Presented by Macy’s department store since 1924, New York City’s Thanksgiving Day parade is the largest and most famous, attracting some 2 to 3 million spectators along its 2.5-mile route and drawing an enormous television audience. It typically features marching bands, performers, elaborate floats conveying various celebrities and giant balloons shaped like cartoon characters. Beginning in the mid-20th century and perhaps even earlier, the president of the United States has “pardoned” one or two Thanksgiving turkeys each year, sparing the birds from slaughter and sending them to a farm for retirement. A number of U.S. governors also perform the annual turkey pardoning ritual. THANKSGIVING CONTROVERSIES For some scholars, the jury is still out on whether the feast at Plymouth really constituted the first Thanksgiving in the United States. Indeed, historians have recorded other ceremonies of thanks among European settlers in North America that predate the Pilgrims’ celebration. In 1565, for instance, the Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilé invited members of the local Timucua tribe to a dinner in St. Augustine, Florida, after holding a mass to thank God for his crew’s safe arrival. On December 4, 1619, when 38 British settlers reached a site known as Berkeley Hundred on the banks of Virginia’s James River, they read a proclamation designating the date as “a day of thanksgiving to Almighty God.” Some Native Americans and others take issue with how the Thanksgiving story is presented to the American public, and especially to schoolchildren. In their view, the traditional narrative paints a deceptively sunny portrait of relations between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people, masking the long and bloody history of conflict between Native Americans and European settlers that resulted in the deaths of millions. Since 1970, protesters have gathered on the day designated as Thanksgiving at the top of Cole’s Hill, which overlooks Plymouth Rock, to commemorate a “National Day of Mourning.” Similar events are held in other parts of the country. THANKSGIVING’S ANCIENT ORIGINS Although the American concept of Thanksgiving developed in the colonies of New England, its roots can be traced back to the other side of the Atlantic. Both the Separatists who came over on the Mayflower and the Puritans who arrived soon after brought with them a tradition of providential holidays—days of fasting during difficult or pivotal moments and days of feasting and celebration to thank God in times of plenty. As an annual celebration of the harvest and its bounty, moreover, Thanksgiving falls under a category of festivals that spans cultures, continents and millennia. In ancient times, the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans feasted and paid tribute to their gods after the fall harvest. Thanksgiving also bears a resemblance to the ancient Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot. Finally, historians have noted that Native Americans had a rich tradition of commemorating the fall harvest with feasting and merrymaking long before Europeans set foot on their shores.

The Sun continues to put a spotlight on your solar seventh house--your partnership sector. This can be a time of much learning through the mirror of close relationships. It’s not the time to push your agenda or personal plans forward; rather, it’s a cycle in which you are at your best when you recognize the need to form alliances, to give back to a special someone, and to compromise in order to find some balance in your life. It’s a strong period for putting yourself into another person’s shoes and to better understand him/her. You may be meeting with someone strong and assertive by nature now, or a partner is more assertive and needy of attention. There may be some competitive feelings between you and a significant other now. Focus is on reconciliation, forming or cementing bonds, diplomacy, consultation, one-on-one interactions, and negotiations. You may feel a little drained physically now, temporarily. The Sun illuminates your first house now, bringing issues surrounding your personal identity, appearance, outward behavior, and self-expression to the forefront. This marks the peak of your physical solar cycle, and you are in the position to make an impression on others, and to assert your personal influence. Spontaneity of expression is what this transit is about. You are ready to put your past behind you and to start a new personal cycle. You have presence and you project confidence. Increased energy and a renewed feeling of confidence is with you now, so take advantage. It’s a great month to do something entirely new and pioneering—to go solo in some area of your life. This particular season of the year smiles on your personal endeavors. This is a time when you more easily get in touch with a true sense of your identity and purpose. The most enterprising side of your nature surfaces, and it’s time to seize opportunities. Existing problems in your life may be overcome now by bravery and a straightforward approach to your life. There’s nothing wrong with a bit of self-centeredness during this cycle, but avoid taking it too far. It’s not the best time for teamwork and other cooperative endeavors. The spotlight is on you and your ability to lead, so make it a good one! Take steps to improve how you come across to others. It’s time to carve your own path in life.

The Sun travels through your twelfth house now, marking a time of retreat and regeneration. Think about the attachments you have--to things, people, and routines-and consider which ones are dragging you down. This is a time when competitive energies and the ego are on a bit of a break. It’s not the time to push ahead with brand new projects. Rather, it’s a time of reflection, dreaming, and recharging your batteries. Situations that have naturally outgrown their usefulness in your life can now be put behind you. Endings of natural cycles may be part of the picture at this time of year. Your energy is largely applied to personal and private affairs now. Your disposition is introspective. Rest and reflect, and prepare for a more outgoing cycle when the Sun moves into your first house.
The Sun lights your solar eleventh house. The Sun illuminates your sector of friends, groups, and dreams coming true this month. It’s a sociable sector of your chart, and that’s exactly how you are feeling--happy, light-hearted, cosmopolitan, and social. Group affiliations capture your attention. Connections can be made now and networking pays off, or at least satisfies. Being part of a community or circle of friends and building your social network is important to you at this time. This is a rather happy, goal-oriented cycle. A lively agenda is promised, you’re attracting quite a bit of interest, and your energy for making contact with others is high. A stronger sense of community is with you during this cycle. Relationships take on a fun, if impersonal, tone now. Activities with children (especially others’ children) may increase. You are more stimulated by all that is unconventional during this cycle, and your ideas are original and progressive now. This is a time to follow your dreams and ideals, and to plant a seed in the form of a wish for the future.
The Sun illuminates your solar fifth house now. After a period of “nesting”, you are coming out of your shell, ready to perform and to express yourself creatively. This is a very playful period of the year, when you are inspired creatively and emotionally. After a period of self-protectiveness, you are now more spontaneous and more willing to take risks. You take more pride than usual in your creations, your love affairs, your children, and your hobbies. Pleasure and amusement play an important role in your search for freedom of self-expression now. Show off your best colors! You want others to take notice, and you are more sensitive to whether people appreciate you. More than any time of the year, this is the cycle in which you focus on having fun, enjoying romance, and expressing yourself creatively. Your hobbies, leisure time, moments spent with children, gaming time, and so forth, all come into focus at this time of year. This is a cycle in which you find joy in expressing who you are--when your “inner child” comes out to play. This is a time when you are more flirtatious than usual, and when you might take a few risks in life--not only gambling with games but with life itself. You might be a bit of a showman at this time. You are likely feeling good in general, and you tend to spread the joy.
With the Sun spotlighting your house of family and home, these areas are your instinctive focus during this period. Your family, home, property concerns, roots, and heritage come into focus and become a source of pride. You are likely quite preoccupied with feelings of security and your inner experiences. This is a time when you send down roots and seek a feeling of belonging. You could be thrust into a position of leadership on the home front. Ego confrontations with family members are possible now, but the best way to handle this energy is to do your best to strengthen your relationship to your family and your home base. This is a time to do what you can to build trust in your family life and a strong foundation within yourself, so that regardless of what you meet in the outside world over the next months, you have a secure place to return to. Besides spending more time tending to domestic affairs, the focus can be on cultivating and nourishing your inner foundations that support you and your growth. This is a time to collect yourself--to fill your well, so to speak.
The Sun illuminates your career and reputation
This month, with the Sun spotlighting your solar ninth house, your focus turns outward, away from the more personal concerns that have occupied your thoughts in the last months. More than any other time during the year, you are feeling most adventurous and willing to take a leap of faith. This is a cycle in which you seek a higher meaning to your life, and/or seek out new experiences that take you beyond the here and now, and beyond the mundane details of day-to-day life. Anything that broadens your experiences attracts now. A lack of superficiality finds you straight to the point, interested in the truth of things. It would be wise for you to consider scheduling a vacation, adventure of sorts, or a course that expands your mind. These don’t have to happen now, but taking the time to recognize your needs for escaping the daily grind, taking a few risks, and feeding your spirit for self-expression through some form of adventure or higher learning, will help you to feel good about yourself. The only caution with this cycle is that you could lose touch with managing everyday affairs and important details.
sector. More than any other time of the year, your focus is drawn to your “place” or standing in the outer world, and your reputation. This is the time when you are more interested in, and focused on, accomplishing something important. Your competency is something that you are especially sensitive to during this cycle. You want to shine. Your vision is practical right now, and you want to see tangible results for your efforts. More contact with authority figures is likely during this period. Recognition is likely to come your way whether you ask for it or not, and the responsibility that comes right along with it! Do what you feel is right, keeping in mind that you are at your most visible during this period in the year.

THANKSGIVING IN NEW JERSEY
Trivia and Popular Events
What many regard as the nation’s first Thanksgiving took place in December 1621 as the religious separatist Pilgrims held a three-day feast to celebrate a bountiful harvest. The day did not become a national holiday until 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday of November as a national day of thanksgiving, President Franklin Roosevelt later declared that Thanksgiving Day always be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of the month to encourage earlier holiday shopping. While the turkey is generally served as the main dish for a Thanksgiving dinner, goose, and duck, and ham, are now sometimes served in place of the Thanksgiving turkey. Some other alternative recipes for a Thanksgiving dinner include the Chinese recipe for goose that could be used on the similarly-sized American bird. Vegetarians or vegan’s usually have tofurkey, a tofu-based dish with imitation turkey flavor. “Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare. They are consumed in twelve minutes. Football Half-times take twelve minutes. This is not coincidence.” - by Erma Bombeck Early 19th Century Thanksgiving Sunday, November 20, 2016@ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm Allaire Village 4265 Atlantic Ave Farmingdale, NJ This event celebrates the end of the autumn season, and to give thanks for a bountiful harvest, the company of each other, and all the things that help to enrich our lives. Long Beach Island Surf City, NJ 08008
Fantasy Island Amusement Park 320 7th St • Beach Haven, NJ 08008
Long Beach Island is a place I’ve vacationed my entire life.
LOVE IT!!! This place holds a true spot in my heart because I’ve been coming down here since I was born and every single time we spend at least one day here. I’m 21 years old and still take great joy in the arcade! It’s a fantastic way to spend a few hours down here!
It’s a family beach, and aside from the scattered locals and retirees who live here year round, the island is pretty dead until the summer months when the tourists roll in, and since it is a getaway/vacation spot, the prices of restaurants, bars, and attractions can be on the pricier side. Aside from dishing out a few more bucks for a stack of pancakes or for some of the freshest fish around, LBI has a lot to offer for everyone- the lighthouse for climbing, viking village, bay village, and all the local flea markets, sand sculpting contests, etc. The beaches are clean, the people are friendly, and good times await you on Long Beach Island.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
Barnegat Lighthouse I love this place. Beautiful and serene. And let’s be honest, it won’t kill ya to learn some history of the island that you venture to year after year. The view from the top is like no other. Stunningly beautiful sights of all angles of the island. You can also venture around the bottom; explore, fish...whatever your heart desires. Definitely put this on your must see list.
2380 E Bay Ave • Manahawkin, NJ 08050 My boyfriend and I stopped here on a whim to rent a few jetski’s for an hour before we drove back to north jersey. Everyone was super friendly and this was a laid back, yet safe place to ride. The bay area was beautiful and you have a decent amount of space that you can ride in. The only thing that we were a little weary about was there was no riding pattern rules. Everyone was just allowed to zip around where ever they wanted in the marked off area. I think there should be some sort of pattern like clockwise or counter clockwise, as I was almost hit once or twice by people being too crazy. I would absolutely recommend these guys to anyone wanted to get a glimpse of the entire island on a jetski. SO much fun.
Settler’s Mill Adventure Golf 806 N Bay Ave • Beach Haven, NJ 08008
This is the best mini-golf course I’ve ever been to! My group opted for the waterfall route and it was gorgeous. The falls were located throughout the course and made for a really pretty backdrop to our game. I liked that the course was on a little hill and we couldn’t see the entire course from the start. It added a fun element of surprise. The cave course and the waterfall course were separate but laid out in the same area. You couldn’t tell what hole went to what course until you got to your next hole. That was another cool surprising aspect. Fun, top 40 music set the background to our game. The course was also pretty challenging. Par 2 my tush. Maybe I’m not the best mini-golfer but I found a stroke 4 to be more common. Mini-golf courses seem to be a dime-a-dozen in LBI, but this one is worth checking out.
Popcorn Park Zoo Humane Way • Forked River, NJ 08731
This is not your typical zoo and as long as you understand this walking in you’ll enjoy your visit. All of the animals here have been surrendered or rescued. There are no research or breeding programs. The zoo is just a safe haven for these exotic and domesticated animals. The zoo is very small and easily walkable. You can easily walk it very slowly in under 2 hours. Admission is very reasonable and goes towards the animals care. Adults are $5 and kids 3-11 are $4. Popcorn and peanuts are sold ($2.50 and $1.50) to feed the animals. Although it’s small you can see lions, tigers, bears, sheep, cows and a lot of other animals. I think because it’s such a simple zoo my kids LOVE it even more. Where else can you get close to black bears and throw them peanuts! There is no glitz here whatsoever. Not even a snack bar. They advertise ice cream but I’ve never actually seen anyone with it. Bathrooms are located outside the main entrance. Parking lots are small but there is plenty of parking all around. Make sure you visit the animal shelter next door! The location is easily accessible not far

Heisman Race Down To Four but Lamar Jackson’s lead is huge
As is the case with the College Football Playoff, the final sprint for the Heisman Trophy is shaping to be a four-man race. Lamar Jackson, Deshaun Watson, Donnel Pumphrey and Jake Browning have separated themselves from the pack to stand alone. Meanwhile, the fifth spot has alternated between a number of contenders, including Michigan’s Jabril Peppers and Florida State’s Dalvin Cook. But it’s nearly impossible to see any one player other than the current top four lift the Heisman in Manhattan in December. It might even be difficult to see a player other than Jackson be awarded the trophy. 1. Louisville QB Lamar Jackson With games still to come against Houston and Kentucky, Jackson seems poised to come away with the Heisman should Louisville complete a one-loss regular season. He does have Watson looking over his shoulder, however. 2. Clemson QB Deshaun Watson Watson’s candidacy rests on his numbers, which are still very solid despite a slight decline from last season; his team’s unbeaten record and place among the top four in the Playoff rankings; and the Tigers’ head-tohead win against Jackson and Louisville. It’s a pretty strong case. 3. San Diego State RB Donnel Pumphrey Pumphrey once again cracked the 100-yard mark in San Diego State’s easy win against Hawaii, keeping the senior on pace to lead the nation in rushing and
charge at Ron Dayne’s career rushing record. It would be a crime if Pumphrey doesn’t get an invite to New York for the Heisman ceremony. 4. Washington QB Jake Browning Browning will face a very good test and have a very good platform in Washington’s game against Southern California. The Trojans are improved, and should give the Huskies a game, but another strong showing against a premier opponent will cement Browning’s place among college football’s elite. 5. Texas RB D’Onta Foreman Let’s save this spot for Foreman, who has turned around the Longhorns’ season, put up some incredible numbers and may even save Charlie Strong’s job. His team’s average record will keep Foreman out of the top two or three contenders, but he deserves a little recognition.
Just off the list • Alabama DE Jonathan Allen • Auburn RB Kamryn Pettway • Michigan LB Jabril Peppers • Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett • Oklahoma WR Dede Westbrook • Virginia Tech QB Jerod Evans • Washington State QB Luke Falk • Western Michigan QB Zach Terrell

HISTORY OF 2017 HONDA PILOT GETS APPLE CARPLAY AND ANDROID AUTO VETERANS DAY
™
™
continued from pg 1
On November 11, 1921, an unidentified American soldier killed in the war was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.; the U.S. Congress had declared the day a legal federal holiday in honor of all those who participated in the war. On the same day the previous year, unidentified soldiers were laid to rest at Westminster Abbey in London and at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Red poppies, a symbol of World War I (from their appearance in the poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae), are sold in Canada and the United Kingdom on Remembrance Day to raise money for veterans or worn in the lapel as a tribute. On June 4, 1926, Congress passed a resolution that the “recurring anniversary of [November 11, 1918] should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations” and that the president should issue an annual proclamation calling for the observance of Armistice Day. By that time, 27 state legislatures had made November 11 a legal holiday. An act approved May 13, 1938 made November 11 a legal Federal holiday, “dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day.’” In actuality, there are no U.S. national holidays because the states retain the right to designate their own, and the government can only designate holidays for federal employees and for the District of Columbia. In practice, however, states almost always follow the federal lead. FROM ARMISTICE DAY TO VETERANS DAY American effort during World War II (1941-1945) saw the greatest mobilization of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force in the nation’s history (more than 16 million people); some 5.7 million more served in the Korean War (1950 to 1953). In 1954, after lobbying efforts by veterans’ service organizations, the 83rd U.S. Congress amended the 1938 act that had made Armistice Day a holiday, striking the word “Armistice” in favor of “Veterans.” President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the legislation on June 1, 1954. From then on, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. The next development in the story of Veterans Day unfolded in 1968, when Congress passed the Uniform Holidays Bill, which sought to ensure threeday weekends for federal employees–and encourage tourism and travel–by celebrating four national holidays (Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Columbus Day) on Mondays. The observation of Veterans Day was set as the fourth Monday in October. The first Veterans Day under the new law was Monday, October 25, 1971; confusion ensued, as many states disapproved of this change, and continued to observe the holiday on its original date. In 1975, after it became evident that the actual date of Veterans Day carried historical and patriotic significance to many Americans, President Gerald R. Ford signed a new law returning the observation of Veterans Day to November 11th beginning in 1978. If November 11 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the federal government observes the holiday on the previous Friday or following Monday, respectively. CELEBRATING VETERANS DAY AROUND THE WORLD Britain, France, Australia and Canada also commemorate the veterans of World Wars I and II on or near November 11th: Canada has Remembrance Day, while Britain has Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday of November). In Europe, Britain and the Commonwealth countries it is common to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every November 11. In the United States, an official wreath-laying ceremony is held each Veterans Day at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery, while parades and other celebrations are held in states around the country. Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day–a common misunderstanding, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Memorial Day (the fourth Monday in May) honors American servicemembers who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle, while Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans–living or dead–but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

APPLE Honda continues to strengthen its position in the three-row SUV segment with fresh updates to the awardwinning Honda Pilot for the 2017 model year. The 2017 Pilot will now be available with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ functionality, a new fingerprint resistant touchscreen and an expanded interior color palette. The 2017 Honda Pilot goes on sale beginning Monday, November 7, with a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP)1 of $30,595 for LX 2WD and $32,395 for LX AWD. “The all-new third-generation Pilot has been a huge hit with SUV buyers,” said Jeff Conrad, Honda Division senior vice president and general manager. “For 2017, we’re making Pilot even more appealing with new technology and options that our customers are seeking.” Honda was among the first automakers to incorporate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, starting with the 2016 Accord and Civic. For 2017, Pilot EX and above trims will now feature Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ functionality integrated into an improved 8-inch Display Audio touchscreen. These models will also see application of a new coating to reduce the appearance of fingerprints on the screen while retaining high glare resistance. Customer choice is also further enhanced for 2017 with extended availability of a black interior, now available on all trims optioned with the White Diamond Pearl exterior paint (previously available only on Elite). Since its introduction in the summer of 2015, the Honda Pilot has earned a host of awards and accolades, including being named one of the “Best Cars for the Money” by U.S. News & World Report; “Best SUV of 2016” by Hispanic Motor Press; “Best Family Cars of 2016” by KBB.com, Parents Magazine and Edmunds.com; and as a finalist for 2016 North American Truck/Utility of the Year. Family-Friendly Utility The Pilot builds on its reputation for interior space, versatility and utility with comfortable seating for up to eight passengers and a cargo area that can hold an 82-quart cooler without compromising third-row seating capability. Third-row entry and exit is easy and intuitive courtesy of the available one-touch second-row seat on EX-L and above models, and large third-row entryway. The Pilot’s center console features a cavernous storage compartment capable of accommodating items as large as a full-size iPad or a purse. And with its seamless cover in the closed position, the console provides a convenient, non-slip surface for items that the driver or front passenger may need close at hand. Powertrain The 2017 Pilot delivers refined, powerful and fuelefficient performance courtesy of its 3.5-liter, directinjected i-VTEC® V-6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management™ (VCM™) cylinder deactivation technology producing peak output of 280 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft. of torque.3 The engine is matched to a choice of two advanced transmissions – a 6-speed automatic transmission or, on upper trims, a 9-speed automatic transmission – both delivering refined, responsive and fuel-efficient performance. These powertrains combine with a light yet rigid unit-body structure and aerodynamically efficient body and chassis designs that result in class-leading EPA fuel economy ratings topping out at 20/27/23 mpg (city/ highway/combined) for two-wheel-drive models and 19/26/22 mpg for all-wheel-drive models.2 Intelligent Variable Torque Management (i-VTM4™) AWD System The Pilot’s available Intelligent VTM4 (i-VTM4) is
the most sophisticated and technologically advanced allwheel-drive system offered in a mainstream, three-row SUV. This entirely more capable system progressively distributes optimum torque between the front and rear axles and dynamically distributes engine torque between the left and right rear wheels. Benefits include superior all-weather handling and neutral, accurate steering under power that is more effective than front-drive, rear-drive or conventional all-wheel-drive systems. Intelligent Traction Management All Pilots feature a button-operated Intelligent Terrain Management System that offers different operating modes, for the AWD: Normal, Snow, Mud and Sand; and for the FWD: Normal and Snow. Developed, tuned and tested in challenging locations in the U.S. and around the world – including Imperial Dunes “Glamis”, California; Moscow, Russia; and Dubai, United Arab Emirates – the Intelligent Traction Management system allows the driver to select the operating mode that best suits the driving conditions by simply pushing a button on the vehicle’s center console. Based on the setting selected, the system adjusts the drive-by-wire map, transmission shift map, Vehicle Stability Assist™ and i-VTM4 torque distribution for AWD-equipped models for optimal performance in a variety of road or surface conditions. Advanced Safety and Assistive Performance In keeping with Honda’s commitment to safety and driver convenience, the Pilot is available with Honda Sensing™, a suite of technologies designed to expand the driver’s situational awareness while sensing and responding to potential road hazards, including other vehicles, road obstacles and even pedestrians, even to the point of mitigating the possibility or severity of a collision. The Pilot includes a standard Multi-Angle Rearview Camera and an available suite of safety and driver assistive technologies that includes LaneWatch™ display, a blind spot information system, Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Adaptive Cruise Control, Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) system and Rear Cross Traffic Monitor. The 2017 Pilot earned top safety ratings from the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), including a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score, and is expected to earn a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), including a GOOD rating in all crash modes and a SUPERIOR rating for front crash prevention. The Pilot incorporates Honda’s next generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, designed to efficiently absorb and disperse the energy from a frontal collision, along with ultra-high-strength door rings designed to help better protect occupants. Standard safety and driver-assistive features include four-channel anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Brake Assist and Hill Start Assist; Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with Traction Control; dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags, driver and front passenger side airbags and side-curtain airbags for all outboard seating positions; and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) with real-time display of individual tire pressures. STUDENTS’ VISION OF FUTURE
OF ROBOTICS COULD EARN VISIT FROM HONDA’S ASIMO
Honda engineers work every day to find new and innovative ways to use robotics to help society. But innovative ideas can come from anywhere, and now middle- and high-school students in the United States will have an opportunity to showcase their own ideas regarding the future of robotics. And if the idea is good enough, they will receive a visit from the world’s most advanced humanoid robot – ASIMO. Honda is asking students and organizations with members ages 1318 to use short video, photos or essays to answer the question: How will robotics affect our world by the year 2066? Entries will be judged by a panel of robotics professionals at Honda
and the winning entry will receive a demonstration of Honda’s robotics products at their school or suitable venue in their community – including an appearance by ASIMO. “One of the most important things that Honda can achieve with its robotics program is to inspire young people to dream big, and to think deeply about what is possible,” said Honda Assistant Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Communications Jeffrey Smith. “This contest will result in many great ideas and visions for the future and we look forward to seeing what the next generation of innovators will come up with.” -www.hondanews.com

ASK THE EXPERT!
DIZZINESS HAS MANY CAUSES Dizziness is something we’ve all experienced at some point in our lives. It is a vague term used to describe an abnormal sensation of movement and can better be described with terms such as light-headedness, disequilibrium, Matthew Jung, M.D Otolaryngologis imbalance, and vertigo. Southern Ocean Medical Center Light-headedness may be accompanied with the feeling that you may faint, and can be associated with blurred vision and weakness. This is commonly from an inadequate increase in blood pressure with change in posture, such as standing up from sitting. It may also be a result of a side effect of a medication, hypoglycemia, anxiety, dehydration, or cardiovascular disease. Vertigo is a unique symptom that describes the sensation of your body moving or seeing your surroundings move when it is actually not. This illusion of movement reflects an imbalance in the vestibular system, which is responsible for detecting the position and movement of the head. Our inner ear, in addition to detecting sound, plays a critical role with this detection of movement as well as incorporating the sensory input from our eyes and body. The quality of the vertigo in most cases can help determine what part of the vestibular system is affected. A common cause of vertigo is from BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) caused by particles floating in specific portions of the inner ear, causing the brain to think the head is moving. The onset of vertigo is abrupt and usually associated with looking up or turning the head, such as when you reach up for the cupboard or turn in bed to turn off the light. The vertigo usually only lasts several seconds, rarely past two minutes. This condition is more common in elderly patients. It is usually successfully treated with positioning maneuvers in the clinic or can be done at home.
vertigo there is pressure in the ear, ringing or buzzing sounds (known as tinnitus), and fluctuating hearing loss, this could be Meniere disease, caused by increased fluid pressure inside the inner ear. On the other hand, if the vertigo is associated with headache, sensitivity to light, nausea and blurred vision, this could be a form of migraine, known as vestibular migraines. Inflammation or infection of the inner ear can cause severe vertigo lasting hours, with or without changes to hearing depending on whether the hearing portion of the inner ear is also affected. Vertigo can also be a symptom of transient ischemic attacks (TIA), stroke, or certain brain lesions, though these are usually accompanied by other tell-tale signs such as headaches, visual loss, and drooping or paralysis of one side of the body.
So when should you seek professional opinion? An occasional episode of light headedness or even the short lasting episode of vertigo is not uncommon. However, take into consideration the severity of the episode. For instance, if your vertigo is lasting more then few minutes and is associated with severe headaches, visual changes, and even loss of body function, you should call your doctor or go to your nearest emergency department. If the symptoms aren’t quite that severe, but is a recurring problem, you should also reach out. While most cases of dizziness are usually benign, your doctor will be able to determine what type of dizziness you have, and order additional testing as needed. In more complex cases of vertigo, your doctor may send you to see a neurologist or an otolaryngologist (Ear, Nose and Throat specialist) for further workup and treatment. If you feel dizzy just by reading this article, I agree, this is a complicated topic! So, if you are having symptoms and you are unsure what to do, don’t hesitate to reach out to your doctor. For vertigo lasting several minutes to hours, the differential diagnosis is broader. If in addition to the
