Whether you currently live in Toms River, you have in the past, the town has affected your life in any way, or you like food and parties, you are cordially invited to celebrate Toms Rivers’ milestone.

What better way to celebrate the wonderful town of Toms River than with gourmet food trucks with samples of barbecue, seafood, empanadas and more. For those with a sweet tooth, you can’t go without the classics like funnel cake and fried Oreos. As if food wasn’t enough to celebrate the 250th anniversary, guests can shop at vendor booths from local businesses and participate in arts and crafts. LBI AMONG TOP FAMILY BEACHES

By Amanda Geronikos Norcross

Experiential travel is on the rise, as more families look to cultural and historic destinations for their vacations. Another thing families want to do? Disconnect. And for that, the family beach vacation remains a tried-and-true getaway.

These beaches, listed in no particular order, deliver just that: a chance for everyone to relax, with the convenience of calm, lifeguard-protected waters; restrooms/showers; and nearby attractions. Our favorite beaches for kids are also within close proximity of accommodations -- from motels to vacation rentals -- and great restaurants. These are the best beaches for families in 2017. Long Beach Island - N.J.

Nobody does a classic beach vacation like Long Beach Island. The island offers 18 miles of shoreline for sandcastle building and boogie boarding, with lifeguards patrolling many areas. New to the area is Daymark Bar & Restaurant in Barnegat Light, perfect for both families and date nights. In 2017, the area’s iconic Surflight Theatre and ShowPlace Ice Cream Parlour will also reopen after a

two-year closure. But the main highlight for kids remains Fantasy Island Amusement Park, where you’ll find everything from a Ferris wheel to funnel cake, plus free concerts and magic shows. Plenty of hotels, motels and rentals dot the island, too. Ponce Inlet - Ponce Inlet, Fla.

You won’t find high-rise hotels or a boardwalk in Ponce Inlet, Florida. Here, the beach is a quiet, wide stretch of sand and surf that doubles as a conservation area for sea turtles. Families can visit the Marine Science Center to learn about the area’s sea turtles and other native wildlife. They can also visit the Ponce de Leon Lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in the state of Florida. Other popular past times include boating, fishing, surfing and paddleboarding. There are lots of places to eat on the ocean and intracoastal waterway, as well as a great selection of rental properties. Jones Beach State Park - Wantagh, N.Y. Located on Long Island, Jones Beach State Park has all the makings for a classic beach vacation with kids: Please see BEACHES, page 7

2017 Ford F-150 Wins Truck of the Year from The Fast Lane Truck, Joins Raptor to Clinch 2017 Gold Hitch Awards “The 2017 Ford F-150 is the best towing half-ton truck this year,” says Andre Smirnov, editor, TFLtruck. com. “The overall versatility, towing performance, and choice of available powertrains and technology features of the entire 2017 F-150 lineup elevated the F-150 above all others.”

DEARBORN, Mich., April 4, 2017 – The 2017 Ford F-150 and F-150 Raptor are taking home three of five Gold Hitch awards from online truck enthusiast magazine The Fast Lane Truck. Along with F-150 winning Truck of the Year overall, both it and Raptor earned additional awards for towing and off-road performance. Gold Hitch awards are based on high-altitude towing and performance testing in Colorado and Utah – the “world’s toughest towing contest” – and include midsize, half-ton, heavy-duty and off-road performance categories.

F-150’s towing capabilities and technologies, along with its secondgeneration 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6 and all-new 10-speed automatic transmission enabled the truck to outperform the competition in high-altitude towing across the Ike Gauntlet. Tow/haul mode and trailer braking aided in its descent. Smirnov says F-150 competed against the 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 and 2017 Nissan Titan. “We performed acceleration tests, challenged the trucks on the Ike Gauntlet extreme towing test, and measured their efficiency towing a trailer on our 100-mile highway loop,” he says. “F-150 was the quickest mainstream pickup truck we have ever tested.” The all-new F-150 Raptor outperformed four competitor trucks to win The Fast Lane Truck Gold

Hitch award for off-road trucks. Raptor’s purposebuilt performance chassis – including BFGoodrich AllTerrain KO2 tires complemented by FOX shocks (jointly engineered by Ford Performance and FOX) featuring 3-inch diameter canisters and nine-stage bypass damping for improved control – was no match for the competition.

Raptor bested a multitude of new entries to take the 2017 Gold Hitch best off-road truck award. “The 2017 Raptor is a complete package that combines a powerful engine, speed and off-road components to tackle nearly every kind of terrain, and do it in comfort,” says Smirnov.

The award is the latest in a series of accolades for the all-new Raptor, including recognition from FOUR WHEELER, Cars.com, AutoGuide.com Truck of the Year and the Autotrader Must Test Drive award. F-150 received the Kelley Blue Book Best Buy award for the third consecutive year and Autobytel Buyer’s Choice award, among numerous honors for overall value, performance and durability.

The recognition highlights Ford’s yearlong celebration of F-Series as best-selling truck in America for 40 consecutive years and best-selling vehicle in America for 35 consecutive years. Join the #40YearsTough celebration at www.40YearsTough.com.

SPRING 2017

THE 2018 FORD F-150 IS A FAR CRY FROM YOUR GRANDPA’S!

When you think Pickup trucks, your first thought is usually the Ford F-150. That’s why the F-150 pretty much sells itself! Pickup trucks have become more and more updated, technologically enhanced, and full of things that used to be more for luxury cars. We have some people who come into the dealership and buy a truck with the price hovering around the cost of a fully loaded Lincoln Continental. This is why understanding the most popular vehicle in our area is almost a necessity. The 2018 Ford F-150 is a far cry from your grandpa’s! First off, they changed the looks a little from the 2017 model. The new look is a little less “boxy” with a clean layout from any angle. They kept the very cool looking LED driving lights that wrap around the headlight and tail light bezels. They have this massive two bar grill (on the

higher models) with a nice surround on the grill. You still have all of those safety features that you love: the pre collision assist, the BLIS Blindspot Monitor (with trailer coverage), Adaptive Cruise Control, and many more! The thing everyone is interested in is the engine choices. You have a standard 3.3V6; you also have a 2.7L Twin Turbo Ecoboost, 3.5L Twin Turbo Ecoboost with Ford’s brand new 10 speed transmission. There is also the all new 3.0 Power Stroke Diesel as an option! There isn’t much info on this new diesel engine for the F-150 yet, but it’s going to be a game changer! For the interior we have an all new “B&O Play Audio System” featuring 10 speakers, optimal speaker placement, and the “B&O Engaging” system to enhance your music. The F-150 is also connected with SYNC Connect and the

3

FordPass app so you can lock and unlock, and start your truck from anyplace on the planet. You also can now choose from some visual appearance packages: The distinctive Sport Appearance Package, The aggressive Special Edition Package, The refined Chrome Appearance Package, and the unique STX Appearance Package. Whether you are a XL or Limited person, you really need to check out the new F-150. Currently there isn’t a clear date when the 2018 will be released; you need to checkout Ford.com in order to find the updates. What we’re hearing it will probably be coming out in the fall of this year. If you never have driven an F-150 you really need to come down and drive one of the 2017 F-150’s on the lot now, then you will find out why they are Americas Best selling truck for 40 years! www.media.ford.com

CLEVER COP SIMULATES CAR JOURNEYS SO BABY CAN GET TO SLEEP AT HOME Without Mom Or Dad Having To Hit The Road

COLOGNE, – For many new parents, there is only one guaranteed solution to putting their baby down at the end of the day – a night-time drive that soothes, calms and eventually helps little one nod off.

of those night‑time drives. To all appearances a regular cot, the Max Motor Dreams, comes to life using a smartphone app. This enables it to record and then reproduce the comforting movement, lights and sounds of a particular journey.

But that still means a disrupted night for mum or dad, who research shows can typically expect little more than five hours sleep a night while losing the equivalent of 44 days sleep in just the first year of their child’s life.* Help, however, could soon be at hand.

“After many years of talking to mums and dads, we know that parents of newborns are often desperate for just one good night’s sleep. But while a quick drive in the family car can work wonders in getting baby off to sleep, the poor old parents still have to be awake and alert at Ford has developed a cot that could simulate the wheel,” said Max Motor Dreams designer – in the comfort of your own home – the mo- Alejandro López Bravo, of Spanish creative stution, engine noise, and even the street lighting dio Espada y Santa Cruz, which produced the

NISSAN ROGUE DOGUE READY FOR “FAST & FUR-IOUS” DEBUT AT THE 2017 NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW NEW YORK – The results are in – dog owners agree that their four-footed friends should be as safe and comfortable in a vehicle as their two-footed fellow passengers. Dog owners also rate clip-in harnesses and non-spill water dispensers as the most appealing dog-friendly accessories in a dog-friendly vehicle1. The new Nissan “Rogue Dogue” project vehicle takes those ideas to heart – and adds a pack more – just in time for the one-off project’s debut at the 2017 New York International Auto Show. “For all of the dog lovers at Nissan, the Rogue Dogue is so much fun – the equivalent, I guess you could say, of riding with your head out the window if you were a dog,” said Michael Bunce, vice president, Product Planning, Nissan North America, Inc. “Of course, we also take pets’ safety very seriously, which is why the Rogue Dogue includes secure leash fastening attachments in the second row and rear cargo area – along with numerous other features designed to make family travel with dogs more enjoyable for everyone.” • The long list of Rogue Dogue modifications installed in the project vehicle includes: • Secured, removable custom dog bed in the rear cargo area • Built-in (fold-down) non-spill water dispenser • Built-in (fold-down) non-spill dog food dispenser • Slide-away dog ramp for easy access to rear compartment for small or elderly dogs • 360-degree (hoop and hose) dog shower with 10 gallon pressurized water reserve • Integrated dog drying system with compressed heated air dryer and outside hose attachment • Heated air vents for rear cargo bed area • Easy-to-clean custom interior materials • Modified second-row/cargo area pass-through passageway • Removable pet partition with Rogue Dogue logo between the second-row and cargo area • Second-row dog hammock (clips around front and rear headrests) • Raised rear floor in rear compartment housing utility drawer and dog ramp; drawer faces covered in custom easy-clean upholstery • Side wall mounted poop bag dispenser • Rear facing passive side view mirror cameras (video sent to hard drive) to capture dog’s road trip experiences – head out the window, interaction between dog and other drivers – for later viewing • Dog first aid kit

In the survey of dog owners, the top three most appealing dog-friendly features were found to be a clip-in harness hook (81 percent), a non-spill water dispenser (74 percent) and a slide-away dog ramp (55 percent).

“Everything that we built into the Rogue Dogue project is actually very possible to add to a production Rogue, though you do compromise the available rear cargo area slightly for the ramp, storage compartments and the food and water dispensers,” said Dennis McCarthy, owner, Vehicle Effects, Sun Valley, Calif. “But really, next to your family, your dog is your most important cargo, so why not?”

Bunce added: “More than 75 percent of dog owners in the survey said that having optional features specifically designed for their dog’s safety and comfort would impact their decision on which vehicle to purchase. So potentially, every dog might have its day – and their custom-equipped Nissan Rogue, too.”

The Rogue Dogue is based on a 2017 Rogue SL with the Platinum Reserve Interior Package, featuring premium tan leather-appointed seats with special quilted leather inserts.

My name is Jennifer Maier; I am the Lease Retention Manager at The Causeway Family of Dealerships, in Manahawkin. This past month I had the opportunity to experience an amazing night at the 2017 BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS GALA. The Causeway Family of Dealerships has been involved in this organization for many years, and I was honored to be asked to attend this amazing event, and share this evening honoring my very close friend, Mrs. Dawn Gluck of Toms River. I am blessed to call Dawn a friend for many years, as the children of Big Brothers Big Sisters are to have her involved in their organization. Dawn became a volunteer two years ago, and has been given the privilege of being appointed the Chairperson for the committee “Big Friends of Littles”. BEACH clean, calm and lifeguard-protected waters; a boardwalk; mini-golf; and playgrounds. Families with little ones should check out Zach’s Bay -- a shallow area that’s perfect for new swimmers. Families can also catch a concert at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater or visit the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center. While you’re in the area, be sure to take a tour of Oheka Castle, one of the inspirations for Jay Gatsby’s estate in “The Great Gatsby.” Rehoboth Beach - Rehoboth Beach, Del. One word: Funland. The family-owned amusement park is the most beloved attraction for kids in Rehoboth Beach, offering midway games, delicious food -- we’re dreaming of the funnel cake -- and classic rides at “yesterday’s prices”; in fact, each ride costs just 35 cents! The beach itself is well groomed and fully staffed with lifeguards; plenty of public restrooms and showers are available, too. New in 2017 is Kids CampBy-The-Sea, a week-long camp that will take place June 26 to 30. Also new is Lefty’s Alley and Eats (in nearby Lewes), a fun zone with bowling, an arcade, laser tag and a restaurant.

Allow to cool for 5 minutes; serve warm or room temperature. http://blog.foodnetwork.com/fn-dish/2015/12/8-things-to-make-with-leftover-holiday-ham/

The pictures of Coronado Beach, outside of San Diego, just don’t do it justice. Go with your family to experience the wide, open shoreline with picture-perfect views (and even better sunsets). Lifeguards are scattered throughout the area, and restrooms and showers are available. Of course, you can’t go to the beach without exploring the historic Hotel del Coronado behind it. Take a tour of the hotel, browse the shops and grab a bite to eat at one of the onsite restaurants. You might also consider Mermaid Fitness at The Del, new in 2017. Wear a mermaid tail while you take a 45-minute aerobics class! Kids ages 12 to 17 may attend this class with an adult. North Beach Park - Racine, Wis. It looks like an iconic Florida beach -- swaying palm trees and all -- but North Beach Park is actually located on the shores of Lake Michigan. Lifeguards in the summer months, a great playground, volleyball court, walking/biking paths, and a relaxing and clean atmosphere make this one of the best beaches for kids. Conveniences for families include restrooms/showers, a snack stand, free parking and nearby BBQ grills for a picnic. And it never feels crowded, especially during the week. When it’s time for a break, check out Wind Point Lighthouse and the Racine Zoo.

Balboa Beach - Newport Beach, Calif.

Balboa Beach in Newport Beach, California, is a family beach through and through. Soft sand beckons little ones to build sandcastles, while lifeguards watch over the advanced boogie boarders and surfers in the family. When families aren’t at the beach, they’re at Balboa Fun Zone, a hub for rides, games, foods and sports equipment rentals, including bicycles. Families can also embark on a harbor cruise from here. Nearby, there are plenty of kid-friendly hotels and restaurants. And in 2017, everything is more easily accessible thanks to the Balboa Peninsula Trolley, which offers free service on weekends.

Four Generations of Barcalows By Rich Hackett Four generations of the Barcalow family have purchased vehicles from the Causeway Family. It all began on April 12th 1979 when William and Helen (now living in South Carolina) purchased a new Ford LTD Landau. William and Helen’s son Paul and his wife Beverly also purchased many trucks and cars from 1992 to 2015. Their sons Dennis, Gregg, Shawn and daughter Holly are also long-time customers.

The one thing all of these family vehicles had in common were they were all purchased from the same salesperson, yours truly, Richard W. Hackett. Recently on January 13, 2017 the fourth generation Barcalow, Ashlyn Barcalow, the great granddaughter of Bill and Helen, purchased a 2014 Ford Fusion! The Barcalow family has now purchased 26 vehicles over the past 38 years! It’s safe to say the Barcalow family wouldn’t buy a car anywhere else. It has been a pleasure to serve all the generations of this fine family!

Meet Mr. Dixon, a grandparent who currently has custody of his twin granddaughters. According to the latest Hunger Study, he represents 22% of adults in Monmouth and Ocean Counties who are raising their grandchildren. Mr. Dixon was on disability but wanted to provide a stable home for the girls which they didn’t have with their parents. So he sought help from the FoodBank and one of our outreach specialists helped him apply for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits, one of the many services we provide. “The SNAP benefits help me provide healthier meals for my granddaughters. Having access to local pantries is a tremendous help to supplement what I have to make 3 square meals for them. I feel like the pantries are not

only giving me food, but encouragement and hope. This has moved me to want to give to someone else by volunteering at the pantries as well.” Mr. Dixon’s hope is to move forward by being there for his granddaughters and helping them with their care, homework and educational needs. He is waiting for the girls to go to school full time so he can go back to work. In the meantime, taking care of them is his top priority.

THE NEW LINCOLN NAVIGATOR: Spacious Interior, Personalized Technology Elevate Family Travel To First Class

NEW YORK, April 12, 2017 – Lincoln today introduces the 2018 Navigator, an all-new full-size SUV that combines modern luxury with advanced technology – elevating family travel to first class.

Wireless charging and standard Wi-Fi keep everyone connected. Advanced technology allows the driver to effortlessly adjust the vehicle to make driving easier or more enjoyable – in any weather or terrain. With more space for your belongings than any other large SUV*, the all-new Navigator assures almost nothing is left behind.

“Quiet luxury is both a look and a feeling,” says Kumar Galhotra, president, The Lincoln Motor Company. “The all-new Navigator embodies both. The sleek styling, spacious interior and technology are all designed to make each trip effortless.”

Navigator’s elegance is on display before the doors even open. Upon approach, the chrome Lincoln star logo on the grille softly illuminates**. Then, LED lighting in the lower front body and taillamps subtly engages, and a luminous Lincoln welcome mat appears beneath the front doors.

At night, interior ambient lights sequentially illuminate each of the SUV’s three rows. During the day, a panoramic roof fills the cabin with natural light.

A twin-turbo V6 engine projected to produce 450 horsepower provides smooth power whenever you need it, delivered through a 10-speed transmission. Navigator’s lighter, high-strength aluminum-alloy body removes nearly 200 pounds, helping create a more refined ride.

Additional weight savings have been reinvested in features such as towing capability and quietness. For example, laminated front and side glass contributes to the quietest Navigator cabin ever.

The all-new Navigator offers speeddependent adaptive lighting, a new Lincoln technology that provides a wider spread of light at lower speeds for increased visibility – helpful when driving through residential areas. As the vehicle accelerates, the beam of light narrows to help eliminate the glare off signs or other distractions.

Beneath the sleek interior are inclination and intrusion sensors, which trigger an alarm if someone attempts to move or enter the vehicle.

Inside, spaciousness comes in all three rows, including storage in each to keep the cabin clean and organized. The all-new Navigator’s advanced cargo management system offers an adjustable shelf behind the rear seats that allows clients to create storage customized to their needs. Even with the vehicle parked on an incline, the feature ensures groceries won’t roll out when the liftgate is opened.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY TECHNOLOGY Navigator is designed to be intuitive and easy to use. A 12-inch configurable instrument cluster allows drivers to choose the information they want displayed. An available Head-Up Display can show selected information on the windshield instead of the instrument cluster. This helps drivers keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. It’s also easy to adjust to changing conditions. With the turn of a dial, the driver can adapt the Navigator to changing road or weather, and enjoy a smooth, confident ride. Additional available technology includes: • Trailer Backup Assist, which automatically steers the vehicle to turn a trailer the desired amount – meaning less time required to perform the task. Navigator is expected to deliver more towing capability than any other premium full-size SUV • 360-degree camera and enhanced park assist, which reduce stress from parallel and perpendicular parking. The system integrates views from four cameras to create an overhead image so the driver can see all around the vehicle • Adaptive cruise control, which automatically slows Navigator in stop-and-go traffic – resuming speed when traffic allows

The interior layout is clean and uncluttered, with a simple, soothing ambience. “When designing the Navigator, we put an emphasis on ultra-luxury touch points,” says David Woodhouse, Lincoln design director. “We took everything the client would see and touch, and made sure it would look and feel a little more exuberant, a little more indulgent and incredibly beautiful.”

Staying connected is easy in the all-new Navigator with six USB ports, four 12-volt power outlets and a 110volt plug. An available wireless phone charger in the firstrow center console media bin eliminates tangled cords. The client experience is further elevated through

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!...FINALLY! Time for Spring Cleaning Inside and Out April has finally arrived and it looks like our Spring has too. March seemed to feel more like January some days, and it has delayed most of our outside activities.

The outside yard cleanup has been put off with the cold on the weekends. We were finally able to By Donna Stroffolino get outside and tidy Professional Stylist, Simply Hair up. The winter debris needs to be cleaned out of the gardens, and weeding begins everywhere. The best way to address the weeds that popped up in the rocks and sidewalks are to blast them with the liquid weed killer. After a short time you can just rake them right out so much easier. If the gardens still have some leaves stuck in the perennials popping up, it is easy to clean those out with the leaf vacuum. They go into its bag, and get chopped up nice and compact too. After the gardens are clean they are ready for mulch. First I rake what is left in the beds, and then top it off with a fresh layer. There are a few colors to choose from, red, brown, and black. It is all personal preference. If you have a lot of ground to cover it is helpful to get a pile delivered from a local garden shop. Otherwise you can purchase large bags at most home stores. I don’t know where all that mulch went from last year, but it always needs a top layer every Spring. There are some very pretty annual pansies out that are hardy to the cold nights we have now. We don’t plant flowers or plants in the soil until

around Mother’s Day. This protects them and they won’t die if it gets too cold one night. It always feels great to add those first flowers, even if you just put a pot of pansies at the front door. Change of season also brings around the heavy Spring clean time. We don’t always want to do heavy cleaning chores, but it is very rewarding when we accomplish them. A beautiful warm day with bright sunshine sets the mood to get it done too. I like to open up some windows for the fresh air, and vacuum and dust anything that isn’t moving. So you can’t be sitting on my couch when the work begins. The blinds and windows get shined too, and some furniture gets moved to get behind it. I have found that using a steam cleaner in the kitchen and bathrooms and floors makes the work much faster and easier on the hands. I always add some great fun music; it makes the time fly by.

The outside furniture and cushions get some Spring clean too. Dawn cleaner from the kitchen mixed with hot water goes a long way. It cleans them very well. They get wiped down with the sponge, and the table and chairs or plastic wicker furniture gets hosed down after that. Now you can put the cushions and umbrella up and add some tiki torches too. A fire pit or stove gets used all summer on the back patio. You can even roast some marshmallows in it, or just sit and enjoy the fire with friends.

After I get heavy cleaning done I like to replace some décor around the house with Spring items. The sea shells are put out in a basket, and fresh flowers on the table. The throw blankets put away, and darker cozy pillows are swapped out for bright colored ones. In the bedrooms the flannel sheets are replaced with soft colored cotton ones and a few soft cotton throw pillows added. It doesn’t take much time to change over from winter, but it brightens up the space.

After you finished all this clean up, sit down and put your feet up and enjoy it! When you are rested go out and play in the warm sunshine. Flocks of people head to our Shore boardwalks, beaches and parks. There is always something going on at the Shore. Local newspapers have pages of things to do every week all summer long. Gearing up for the allergy season Not only will April’s showers bring more flowers, it might also cause more symptoms for spring allergy sufferers. With the change in season, airborne pollen and mold spores will send the body’s immune system into overdrive, leading to symptoms such as sneezing, stuffy nose, and itching. In the springtime alone, typically beginning in March, seasonal allergy symptoms will affect 30 to 60 million people in the United States.

• Change your air conditioning and heating filters monthly • Wash your pets regularly, more often if they spend time outdoors • Remove outdoor clothing before entering the house to limit indoor pollens • Close your windows in favor of air conditioning • Place air cleaners in all rooms of the house There are also many different over-the-counter medications that can help relieve various types of symptoms caused by seasonal allergies. “Over-the-counter allergy medications can ease discomfort by reducing or stopping the itching and sneezing,” says Dr. Sunkavalli. “You just need to choose the correct medication that best manages your personal symptoms.” Dr. Sunkavalli is located at 1100 Route 72 West, Suite 306B in Manahawkin. Appointments can be made by calling 609-978-3910. For more information on Hackensack Meridian Health’s pediatric services or to receive a list of pediatric specialists, please call 1-800-DOCTORS.
