Southern Regional Hosts Dance Marathon for Oceans of Love

The Vintage Automobile Museum of NJ was honored to receive invitations to create a display of antique automobiles at both the Philadelphia and New York International Auto Shows for this year. The Museum’s display at the Philadelphia Show will ran from January 30 to February 7 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The display consisted of a diverse variety of gorgeous cars spanning more than 100 years of motoring. Two of the highlights are the 1911 Hupmobile and a custom “Spacecar” that looks like it time traveled back from the year 2050. The display not only exemplifies the variety of beautiful cars that can be seen at the Museum itself, but is a great opportunity for the Museum to sell chances on a restored 1966 Ford Mustang Convertible that will be raffled off this December. The Southern Regional Student Council and Key Club will be hosting their 3rd Annual Southern Regional Dance Marathon to benefit the Ocean of Love on March 12-13. The Ocean of Love is a local charity assisting Ocean County families of children battling cancer. Southern students collect pledges to try to stay up on their feet for 18 straight hours as a show of solidarity with the children of Ocean of Love. To date, the Southern Regional Dance Marathon has raised over $7,500 for the Ocean of Love. The event is open to the public from 4:00-10:00pm on Saturday, March 12. The marathon opens up with a performance by the band Sneak Attack! From 4:00-6:00pm, followed by the musical talents of the Starlight Performers from 6:30-7:30pm. From 8:00-10:00pm, Southern Regional’s own house DJ, DJ MxM will be entertaining our crowd. The marathon will reopen to the public at 8:00am on Sunday, March 13 for our first ever Southern Regional Dance Marathon Children’s Festival which will run from 8:00am to 10:00am. The festival will feature face painting, a bounce house, games, and music by DJ Mike of Jersey Shore DJ’s. There will be appearances by Freckles the Clown, the Star Wars characters of the 501st Legion, and Layla Marie Princess Playtime. Layla Marie Princess Playtime will be singing, dancing and entertaining the children with the very best princess and character entertainment. The event is free to the public but donations to the Ocean of Love are kindly requested. Vintage Automobile Museum of NJ Invited to Philly & NY auto Shows

If you are unable to attend the Philadelphia Show, why not plan on attending the New York International Auto Show that runs from March 25 to April 3 at the Jacob Javits Center. This will be another opportunity to view all the new cars, some beautiful cars from the past and where you can also purchase a chance to win a classic Mustang. The Museum itself has rotating displays featuring cars of a certain era, genre, manufacturer, country of origin or style that changes every two to three months. The current display, which runs until March 27, is entitled “Auto Racing in New Jersey” and features stock cars, on loan from the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club, dragsters, including the world’s quickest pickup truck, and a model car display. The Museum is located at 1800 Bay Ave., Building 13, in Point Pleasant. It sits adjacent to the New Jersey Museum of Boating in the Johnson Bother’s Boat Yard. Admission is free to both museums. January 28, 2016 - Neptune, NJ – The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties announced a new Free Tax Preparation Store opening February 2nd at the Monmouth Mall (next to Boscov’s on the upper level) for qualified families. Preparers are trained and certified at the advanced level through the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. VITA is a free, IRS-sponsored program to help low and middle income workers have their federal and state personal income taxes prepared and filed at no cost. This year, the maximum combined federal and state Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) refund has increased to up to $8,114, but a tax return must be filed to claim it. Qualified families with incomes of $53,267 or less qualify for free tax preparation. Households with incomes under $62,000 also qualify for free help at www.MyFreeTaxes.com. Free tax preparation will also be available in other locations throughout Monmouth and Ocean Counties, including the Financial Success Center at the Freehold Mall and Ocean County Connections at the Ocean Mall. During this time, Our Gang has been nominated for thirty-two New Jersey Association of Community Theatre Perry Awards for excellence in theatre. The organization has won a total of six Perry Awards, including “Community Theatre of the Year” in 2012. In just three years, Our Gang has received thirty-five nominations in the International Music and Entertainment Association Awards, and has taken home eight awards in performance and production categories.

history of president’s day

Presidents’ Day is an American holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February. Originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, it is still officially called “Washington’s Birthday” by the federal government. Traditionally celebrated on February 22—Washington’s actual day of birth—the holiday became popularly known as Presidents’ Day after it was moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers. While several states still have individual holidays honoring the birthdays of Washington, Abraham Lincoln and other figures, Presidents’ Day is now popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents past and present. PRESIDENTS’ DAY: ORIGIN AS WASHINGTON’S BIRTHDAY The story of Presidents’ Day date begins in 1800. Following President George Washington’s death in 1799, his February 22 birthday became a perennial day of remembrance. At the time, Washington was venerated as the most important figure in American history, and events like the 1832 centennial of his birth and the start of construction of the Washington Monument in 1848 were cause for national celebration. Did You Know? President’s Day never falls on the actual birthday of any American president. Four chief executives—George Washington, William Henry Harrison, Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan_were born in February, but their birthdays all come either too early or late to coincide with Presidents’ Day, which is always celebrated on the third Monday of the month. While Washington’s Birthday was an unofficial observance for most of the 1800s, it was not until the late 1870s that it became a federal holiday. Senator Steven Wallace Dorsey of Arkansas was the first to propose the measure, and in 1879 President Rutherford B. Hayes signed it into law. The holiday initially only applied to the District of Columbia, but in 1885 it was expanded to the whole country. At the time, Washington’s Birthday joined four other nationally recognized federal bank holidays—Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Independence Day and Thanksgiving—and was the first to celebrate the life of an individual American. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, signed into law in 1983, would be the second. PRESIDENTS’ DAY: THE UNIFORM MONDAY HOLIDAY ACT The shift from Washington’s Birthday to Presidents’ Day began in the late 1960s when Congress proposed a measure known as the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. Championed by Senator Robert McClory of Illinois, this law sought to shift the celebration of several federal holidays from specific dates to a series of predetermined Mondays. The proposed change was seen by many as a novel way to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers, and it was believed that ensuring holidays always fell on the same weekday would reduce employee absenteeism. While some argued that shifting holidays from their original dates would cheapen their meaning, the bill also had widespread support from both the private sector and labor unions and was seen as a surefire way to bolster retail sales. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act also included a provision to combine the celebration of Washington’s Birthday with Abraham Lincoln’s, which fell on the proximate date of February 12. Lincoln’s Birthday had long been a state holiday in places like Illinois, and many supported joining the two days as a way of giving equal recognition to two of America’s most famous statesmen. McClory was among the measure’s major proponents, and he even floated the idea of renaming the holiday “President’s Day.” This proved to be a point of contention for lawmakers from George Washington’s home state of Virginia, and the proposal was eventually dropped. Nevertheless, the main piece of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act passed in 1968 and officially took effect in 1971 following an executive order from President Richard Nixon. Washington’s Birthday was then shifted from the fixed date of February 22 to the third Monday of February. Columbus Day, Memorial Day and Veterans Day were also moved from their traditionally designated dates. (As a result of widespread criticism, in 1980 Veterans’ Day was returned to its original November 11 date.) PRESIDENTS’ DAY: TRANSFORMATION While Nixon’s order plainly called the newly placed holiday Washington’s Birthday, it was not long before the shift to Presidents’ Day began. The move away from February 22 led many to believe that the new date was intended to honor both Washington and Abraham Lincoln, as it now fell between their two birthdays. Marketers soon jumped at the opportunity to play up the three-day weekend with sales, and “Presidents’ Day” bargains were advertised at stores around the country. By the mid-1980s Washington’s Birthday was known to many Americans as Presidents’ Day. This shift had solidified in the early 2000s, by which time as many as half the 50 states had changed the holiday’s name to Presidents’ Day on their calendars. Some states have even chosen to customize the holiday by adding new figures to the celebration. Arkansas, for instance, celebrates Washington as well as civil rights activist Daisy Gatson Bates. Alabama, meanwhile, uses Presidents’ Day to commemorate Washington and Thomas Jefferson (who was born in April). Washington and Lincoln still remain the two most recognized leaders, but Presidents’ Day is now popularly seen as a day to recognize the lives and achievements of all of America’s chief executives. Some lawmakers have objected to this view, arguing that grouping George Washington and Abraham Lincoln together with less successful presidents minimizes their legacies. Congressional measures to restore Washington and Lincoln’s individual birthdays were proposed during the early 2000s, but all failed to gain much attention. For its part, the federal government has held fast to the original incarnation of the holiday as a celebration of the country’s first president. The third Monday in February is still listed on official calendars as Washington’s Birthday. PRESIDENTS’ DAY: CELEBRATIONS AND TRADITIONS Like Independence Day, Presidents’ Day is traditionally viewed as a time of patriotic celebration and remembrance. In its original incarnation as Washington’s Birthday, the holiday gained special meaning during the difficulties of the Great Depression, when portraits of George Washington often graced the front pages of newspapers and magazines every February 22. In 1932 the date was used to reinstate the Purple Heart, a military decoration originally created by George Washington to honor soldiers killed or wounded while serving in the armed forces. Patriotic groups and the Boy Scouts of America also held celebrations on the day, and in 1938 some 5,000 people attended mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City in honor of Washington. In its modern form, Presidents’ Day is used by many patriotic and historical groups as a date for staging celebrations, reenactments and other events. A number of states also require that their public schools spend the days leading up to Presidents’ Day teaching students about the accomplishments of the presidents, often with a focus on the lives of Washington and Lincoln. -www.history.com

New Jersey has so much to do year round as far as outdoor sports and activities, and I have shared a little bit of my outdoor knowledge with my readers over the past few months. I have discussed different types of hunting, fishing, and other outdoor sports and activities. I really hope I have engaged my readers to get out there and new things. New Jersey is a great place to do all of what I have talked about and much more. Out of all the outdoor sports I have talked about in the last few months, me personally; I love them all. But hunting has to be my favorite over the last few years, learning and growing as a hunter has been so much fun for me. I would like to offer a

little something to my readers for following me and reading my articles. So for those of you that pick up this paper and turn the pages to my section; this is me expressing how much I appreciate all my readers. I would like to see who has followed my advice and got out there to explore nature and all of its beauty. I am hosting a picture contest here at Causeway Ford & Lincoln for all my readers and anyone else that wants to get involved. I am looking for everyone that has gone out and hunted throughout the seasons this year and for them to share their experiences with me as well as everyone here at Causeway. I would like anyone who has pictures of their hunting trips or just day hunts to send them in to me by email or bring them into me at Causeway Ford. LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Washington and Lee women’s track and field team sent athletes to two meets on Saturday. A select group competed at the Camel City Invite at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C., while the rest of the team was at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational hosted by Liberty. At the Darius Dixon Invite, senior Maggie Kleber (Beach Haven, N.J./Southern

In the 60m hurdles, sophomore Kaleigh Hinton (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) placed fifth with a time of 10.22. Junior Kara Farroni (Willoughby, Ohio/ Willoughby South) finished seventh in the 400m (1:05.28), while Hinton took eighth in 1:06.06. At the Camel City Invite, the DMR was sixth overall and second in Division III with a time of 12:56.50. The quartet consisted of first-year Maggie Seybold (Cockeysville, Md./McDonogh School), juniors Dana Lee (Nashville, Tenn./St. Cecilia Academy) and Catherine Fonvielle (Alexandria, Va./ St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) and first-year Samantha Yates (Birmingham, Ala./St. Paul’s School).

2017 Lincoln Continental… Enough Said

There are a lot of cars that have a good amount of history, look at BMW (formerly known as RMW) making the engines for some of the Luftwaffe planes, or Alpha Romeo designing pure race cars that dominated the early Mille Miglia and Le Mans races. When it comes to luxury there is one person to thank for that, his name is Henry Leland. Mr. Leland worked for Cadillac and got tired of working for General Motors so he ended up forming The Lincoln Motor Car Co. in August of 1917 with his son Wilfred. Henry Ford ended up buying Lincoln in 1922, but they continued to operate separately from Ford. The Ford and Lincoln merger brought along some amazing vehicles like the 1926 Lincoln L-Series Towncar, or a 1931 Lincoln Model K, or the 1939 Lincoln Zephyr (or MKZ as it’s called today!) But one of the favorite Lincoln’s of all time is the 1939 Lincoln Continental with its 267 cubic inch V12 engine. This is when the Lincoln “Split wing grill” that you see on almost every Lincoln today came into production. This now brings us to 2017… The 2017 Lincoln Continental was designed by British designer David Woodhouse (from Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Volvo) and was greeted with open arms. The new Continental is quite a looker with its quad LED adaptive headlights, illuminated Lincoln “Star” logo, and dripping with the ultimate luxury. This is the car that replaces the outgoing (and quite tired) MKS will be powered by an all Lincoln exclusive 3.0 Twin Turbo V6, good for 400hp and 400tq. This new Lincoln will not have an EcoBoost engine; it will just be named the 3.0T. This engine will be connected to Lincoln’s latest AWD system and a second generation ride control named CCD. Lincoln’s famous “push button” transmission makes its return along with the best interior of any car on the market (in its price range). The Lincoln “Split Wing” grille is gone on this and future models, with Lincoln now going with a one piece “Lincoln Star Mesh” being applied to all future Lincoln models (see 2017 MKZ). There is also a high mounted E-Latch Door handle where you

grasp the door and it will pop open with zero effort on your part. On the interior you have a front 30 position seats made from Bridge of Weir Deepsoft leather (just sit in it… I dare you) along with 3 position power lumbar with heating and cooling massaging seats (front and back). This and all other new Lincolns come with the new Revel Sound system… If you don’t know who Revel is, you really need to Google them. They are a super high end sound company (most of the speakers go for $2,000 and up) and they told Lincoln how to design the interior of their cars to make the 19 speakers sound totally amazing. I did a demo with a customer that purchased a 2016 Lincoln MKX the other day and when he put on his iPod it literally sounded like the crowd was in the backseat and we were standing on stage along with the band, if you are an audiophile the Revel systems only sold on Lincoln’s are the ones to check out! You will also have the new (and yes very very improved) SYNC 3 system that is now Microsoft free and very usable! There are so many more options that I could go on forever, but you are just going to have to come in and take a look once they arrive. The car market is a very packed and cutthroat business. People get so passionate about the brand

they love and hate others “just because”. There is no such thing as a “Bad” car you love cars because they are a piece of you and despite what some people say, you still pick out a car because you like something about it not just for its basic transportation. If that was the case every car would be identical and just in black like the Model T. There is no price point on this car as of yet, but think of it starting in the high 50’s low 60’s for the base model (yeah I know… not exactly “base”). This car is the one game changer when it comes to the now totally independent Lincoln Motor Company. Do yourself a favor and don’t prejudge this car until you have had a chance to take it for a test drive!

alternative garlic butter shrimp and quinoa

Quinoa is naturally gluten-free and contains iron, B-vitamins, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, vitamin E and fiber. It is one of only a few plant foods that are considered a complete protein and comprised of all pernine essential amino acids Ingredients: • 1 tablespoon olive oil • ½ cup finely chopped onion • 5 teaspoons minced garlic, divided • 2 cups uncooked quinoa • 1 teaspoon chili powder, divided • 4 cups vegetable or chicken broth • 6 tablespoons salted butter, divided • 1 pound devein and peeled shrimp • salt and pepper to taste • fresh parsley for serving • fresh lemon juice for serving Directions: 1. Heat the oil in a large nonstick pot over medium high heat. Add the onion and saute until softened, about 5 minutes. Add 2 teaspoons of the garlic and saute for 1 minute, stirring constantly to prevent burning. Add the uncooked quinoa and ½ teaspoon chili powder. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Saute for another 1 minute to add flavor to the quinoa. Add the broth, bring to a boil, cover and cook for 15-20 minutes. When the quinoa is done, it will be soft throughout. Fluff with a fork and toss with fresh minced parsley. 2. While the quinoa is cooking, heat 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet over medium high heat. When the pan is hot and the butter is melted, add the shrimp and sprinkle with the remaining ½ teaspoon chili powder directly in the pan. Season with salt and pepper and saute until no longer translucent and golden brown on the outside. Just at the end of the saute, add 1 teaspoon garlic and swirl around in the pan until the garlic is very fragrant. 3. Melt the remaining 5 tablespoons butter with the 2 teaspoons garlic to make a sauce for drizzling (for this, crushed garlic or garlic paste would work really well but minced is also fine). 4. Serve the quinoa and shrimp together in one dish, topping with fresh chopped parsley and lemon juice if desired. When the butter is melted and cooled slightly, drizzle over the shrimp and quinoa. Serve immediately, while still hot.

I am in third grade at McKinley Avenue School. It is a third and fourth grade school. There are a lot of fun things there for recess like a basketball court and a football field. When we have indoor recess, we play silent ball. On the weekends we go there for basketball practice and games in the gym. McKinley Avenue School has a lot of great teachers. Our school is connected to the intermediate School which is a fifth and sixth grade school. My sister Abigail goes there. McKinley Avenue School is a cool school and I am happy that I go there!

A mini DIY Spring terrarium made from a glass jar, a twig and some colorful tissue paper is a great craft for a gift or just to celebrate the new spring season. This craft project is also a great way to start a conversation with your child about the changing seasons. Do you see blossoms on the trees outside? What do you see before the flowers bloom? Can you create a different terrarium for each season? What would each terrarium look like? Supplies: •glass jar with a lid • small twig that fits in the jar and looks like a tree

• different colored tissue paper (green, pink, yellow) • hot glue gun and hot glue sticks

• Tear off tiny pieces of green tissue paper and scrunch them into crumpled balls. Green tissue paper works best for this part, as we will imagine this is the grass. • Glue the tiny tissue paper balls onto the bottom of the inside of the jar lid, being careful not to get too close to the edge. We want to be able to screw the jar lid onto the jar when we are finished. • Next, tear off tiny pieces of colored tissue paper and glue those to the “branches” of your twig. • Glue the bottom of the twig (which should look like the trunk of the tree) to the bottom of the inside of the jar lid with the green paper. • Carefully place the jar over the tiny tree you have created and screw the lid on. Great job! Give your terrarium as a gift or use it to decorate your room! What other terrarium seasons could you create with this project?

Local Soccer Club Headed to Jefferson Cup College Showcase in Virginia Following up on their success at the Disney College Soccer Showcase, where the SJA FC Crew brought home the second place trophy with an impressive 3 wins and 1 loss for the tournament, they will now head to Virginia. The Jefferson Cup College Showcase in one of the top 5 tournaments in the United States for prospecting college coaches and athletes who want to play soccer in college. Like Disney, tens of thousands of teams apply to the tournament hoping for acceptance, but only about one hundred teams per age bracket will be selected to attend. The South Jersey Academy Futbol Club is excited to announce that they will be represented by Five of their girl teams; U17 FC Crew, U16 FC Azzurri, U15 FC Chelsea, U12 FC Sol, and U10 FC Chivaz.

The SJA organization is looking to build on the successful results achieved at Disney, where 82 college coaches representing over 60 different colleges requested team and individual player contact information. These prospecting colleges have been contacting the coaching staff in order to gather player details, schedule player visits, lock in verbal commitments and finalize their 2016 and 2017 rosters. National Signing Day (February 3rd) inked the commitment of four FC Crew players; Gabrielle Perry to play at Wilmington University in Delaware, Norah Bruther to play at Moravian College in Pennsylvania, Anisa Giaccone to play at Erskine College in South Carolina and Abby Harris to play at Arkansas State University. Senior Tory Babcock remains undecided The SJA coaching staff is working to finalize every player’s commitment before this time next year.

The next wave of hot 2017 College prospects to watch are Bailey Gellis, (Forward) Makenzie Ryan, (Forward) Ashley DellaPietro, (Midfield) Teagan Darling,(Midfield) Emma Martin (Midfield) Katie Hammack (Midfield). Plus our defensive standouts Jenna Adcock, Kara Camarco, and Jenna Reid. Additional up and coming prospects include Taylor Dean,(Goal Keeper) Amanda Ashman, (Forward) Angela Sulfaro, (Forward)and Morgan Hall,(Defense) South Jersey Academy Futbol Club is currently fielding ten competitive soccer teams out of Berkeley Township. The philosophy behind our academy is to promote the development of these youth soccer players and to help them achieve their dreams of playing in the college program of their choice. These teams are comprised of extremely dedicated boys and girls from Tuckerton to Colts Neck. While most of our teams compete within an hour of our Berkeley fields, we do have teams that are competing in tournaments that take them into CT, FL, MA, NC, NY, PA, VA and further in order to get them in front of prospective college coaches.

There are many factors that can put you at risk for having a heart attack, but the good news is that you can take steps to greatly reduce your chances of developing this life-threatening event. Some risk factors can’t be controlled. For example, your gender, family history and age contribute to risk, and you can’t change them. However, you can control many other major factors to lower your risk and lead a healthier lifestyle. William E. Reed, DO., a cardiologist with Meridian Medical Group at Southern Ocean Medical Center, provides the following tips: • Stop smoking. Smokers are 2 to 4 times more likely to develop heart disease than nonsmokers, according to the American Heart Association. • Control high blood pressure. If you have blood pressure higher than recommended, work with your physician to lower it. • Control high cholesterol. If you have high cholesterol, particularly if you have high LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, work with your doctor to lower it. Even a 10% reduction in your total cholesterol may lower your risk for heart disease. • Lose extra weight. • Get physically active. Being inactive can raise your risk. Inactivity is just as dangerous as smoking, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. Check with your doctor before beginning a new exercise routine. • Control diabetes. If you have diabetes, keep it under control. About two-thirds of people with this condition die from cardiovascular disease, not diabetes. • Limit alcohol use and stress. “While it is important to take control of factors that can help reduce the risk of heart disease, it is also equally important to recognize the signs and symptoms of a heart attack,” says Dr. Reed. “While some heart attacks are sudden and intense, most heart attacks start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort.” Some signs of a heart attack include: • Chest discomfort (pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain) • Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or shoulders • Discomfort or pain between the shoulder blades • Shortness of breath • Sweating • Nausea • Indigestion or gas-like pain • Dizziness • Unexplained weakness or fatigue Dr. Reed advises that if you or someone you’re with has chest discomfort, especially with other symptoms, call 9-1-1 and get to a hospital right away.
