I love my job but I didn’t start out wanting to be a car salesman. Growing up in Barnegat, I wanted to be the next star shortstop for the New York Yankees. In fact, I was the leading hitter on Southern Regional All State Baseball team. I thought I was half way there unfortunately that didn’t pan out; I graduated college in May of 1972, signed my teaching contract at Toms River North High School and thought I was on top of the world! Just one problem, I needed a job until I started teaching in September as I applied as a car Salesman at Joe Bennett Chevrolet. As he needed a couple of more salesman, while he was moving his business from the corner of Rt 9 and Rt 72 (where the Diamond Mine is located) to a new location (now Causeway Nissan). Since I just graduated from college, grew up in the area, and knew how to spell Chevrolet, took a chance on me and I got hired. That

summer was crazy. Learning the product, learning how to sell cars, and getting “Lesson Plans” ready for teaching in the fall.

I did so well that summer selling cars, Mr. Bennett called me in his office and asked if I would be willing to work part time basis as I was teaching. I said “Sure!” not knowing that working two nights a week and all day Saturday I would finish first, second, or third on the board every month. In June, I finished my first year of teaching. Mr. Bennett and his managers called me in his office again and asked if I would give up teaching and become a full time car salesman. It was the hardest decision I ever had to make. I loved them both, but I really had fun in selling cars. You get to talk to different people every day, laugh with them, and in there somewhere you sell them a car! In 1993 I moved right next door to Causeway Ford and found out Ford was easier to spell than Chevrolet. (I’ve lost some brain cells along the way). For the last twenty years, I’ve been selling for the Wintrode Family and have loved every day of it! Plus, the owner, Dave Wintrode, is a Yankee Fan. Recently I celebrated my 41st year in the business. I’ve been blessed to have sold over 11,500 cars and trucks. It’s hard work and you do have to put in your time. My wife is an angel for putting up with me! But the rewards have been well worth it. I am very active in our church (St. Mary) have coached Stafford Little League for 24 years, coached Stafford Soccer, and have been a member of the Long Beach Island

When ready to roast the turkey, rinse the outside and cavities of the bird under cold, running water. Cut away and discard any fat remaining on the bird. Place the turkey on several layers of paper towels to drain. Using additional paper towels, pat the outside and cavities dry. Sprinkle cavity liberally with salt and pepper. To stuff the turkey, stand the bird on its tail end in a large bowl; using a tablespoon, stuff the neck cavity loosely with dressing. Pull the neck skin over the dressing and fasten it to the body with a poultry skewer, stuff the body cavity loosely with dressing. Place the turkey, breast side up, on a wire rack in a shallow roasting pan. Brush all the exposed surfaces with vegetable oil. Sprinkle liberally with your choice of herbs, spices, salt, and pepper. turkeys are packed with a disposable thermometer preinserted into the breast which is designed to pop up when the bird is done, a standard meat thermometer, inserted into the thickest part of the thigh at the time the turkey is placed in the oven for roasting, is considered a more reliable means of determining doneness. Also, a standard meat thermometer makes it possible to know how close the turkey is to being done -- an aid in timing preparation of the remainder of the meal. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Remove the aluminum foil about 30 minutes before the turkey is done to complete the browning of the bird. When done, remove the turkey from the oven and place it on a serving platter or carving board.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Nissan celebrated two major milestones today with the first U.S.produced 2014 Nissan Rogue rolling off the line in Smyrna, Tenn. as the facility’s 10 millionth vehicle. The Nissan Rogue is the fifth in a streak of five launches of core-volume models in just 15 months. The all-new product blitz that began with the new Nissan Altima now has refreshed more than 75 percent of Nissan showroom volume. The shift of Rogue production to the United States is part of Nissan’s broader strategy to build where it sells. By 2015, Nissan aims to have 85 percent of its products that are sold in the United States produced in North America. Nissan’s U.S. manufacturing footprint in Smyrna spans more than three decades and includes a number of iconic Nissan nameplates such as Altima, Pathfinder, Xterra, Frontier and Sentra. “Momentum continues as we add new products, jobs and investment to our U.S. manufacturing operations,” said Susan Brennan, Nissan’s vice president of manufacturing in Smyrna. “For more than 30 years, the Smyrna plant has been building high-quality vehicles, and today’s milestone serves as further testament to the flexibility, efficiency and talent of our U.S. workforce.” Demand for the Rogue grew nearly 50 percent from just under 100,000 units in 2010 to 142,000 units in 2012. Calendar-year sales of Rogue through September 2013 totaled 124,669, up 13.6 percent from the prior year. Set to go on sale in November, the totally redesigned 2014 model features a stylish right-sized exterior along with flexible, roomy and inviting interior with optional 3-row/7-passenger seating. “The consistent sales growth of Rogue has made it one of the superstars of the Nissan lineup since its launch in 2007,” said Fred Diaz, divisional vice president, Sales and Marketing, Service and Parts, Nissan U.S.A. “Now Nissan’s second-best selling vehicle, we will look to the all-new Rogue to continue its momentum and help drive the brand’s sales to the next level.” Nissan’s Smyrna Plant now employs more than 7,000 people with an annual payroll in excess of $275 million. The plant is home to the award-winning Altima, Maxima, Pathfinder, LEAF and Infiniti QX60, as well as the country’s largest lithium-ion automotive battery plant supporting production of the all-electric, zeroemission Nissan LEAF. Penn State vs. Ohio State Mike Gesicki will announce his decision the week: Buckeyes recruiting

Saturday to watch the Nittany Lions’ thrilling 43-40 win over Michigan in four overtimes. Gesicki told Todderick Hunt of NJ.com that Penn State really helped itself after the visit. “Penn State was unbelievable,” the 6-foot-6, 240-pound said. “The atmosphere, all the people. It wasn’t just the game that got me. It was meeting the players and talking to people on the team. That’s what I took away from the weekend.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Manahawkin (N.J.) Southern Regional product Mike Gesicki, one of the top uncommitted tight end prospects in the country, will announce his decision this week between Ohio State and Penn State. A three-star prospect rated by Rivals.com the No. 14 tight end in the 2014 class, Gesicki made official visits to both programs in the recent weeks before eliminating all other programs – he had more than 15 other scholarship offers – from contention. Gesicki’s most recent visit was to Penn State on

“I would say I went in there with my opinion of Penn State and it definitely didn’t hurt them. It didn’t make my decision or anything like that, but it definitely didn’t hurt. I really did enjoy myself.” Gesicki was one of the top prospects on the sideline for Ohio State’s 31-24 win over Wisconsin on Sept. 28. That was the Buckeyes’ biggest game for recruiting this year because it was a night game and Ohio State wore alternate uniforms. LeBron James was roaming the sidelines. “I took my official there when they played Wisconsin and it was just as good as Penn State,” Gesicki said of Ohio State. “Both visits were phenomenal. I was treated very well at both places. I met a lot of great people. I sat down with Urban Meyer, watched film with him and

learned how he wants to use me… things like that. And the atmosphere down at the Shoe is unbelievable just like at Beaver Stadium.

“Both places were phenomenal and I really enjoyed myself. Both places have great people and it will be a tough decision between the two.” When will he announce his final decision?

“I’ll definitely announce this week before my game,” he said. “My game is on Saturday, so I want to get it out the way before that.”

The Texas Auto Writers Association named the 2014 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor “Off-Road Truck of Texas.” From Thursday through Saturday, TAWA members put trucks through rigorous testing at Knibbe Ranch near San Antonio. “Members of Texas Auto Writers pushed Raptor to the limit on one of the most rugged off-road courses in Texas,” said Doug Scott, Ford truck group marketing manager. “Raptor again showed why it’s the most capable offroad pickup in America, as well as America’s favorite.” Since hitting the market in 2009, Ford F-150 SVT Raptor continues to find new fans and achieve sales success, with record sales performance eight of the past 10 months and sales up 14 percent this year. With sales expected to remain strong, Ford is increasing Raptor production, growing assembly from three trucks per hour to five trucks. Continuously improved each year since its debut, the 2014 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor Special Edition – the latest variant – adds interior and exterior upgrades to further differentiate its appearance, and to appeal to luxury truck buyers seeking uncompromised performance off-road. Internal triple-bypass shocks by FOX Racing Shox – the first on a production truck – give Raptor 11.2 inches of front suspension travel and 12.1 inches at the rear to handle tough terrain at high speeds. An electronic locking rear differential and Torsen® limited-slip front differential provide excellent capability for rock crawling and other low-speed off-road activities. SVT Raptor is available exclusively with a 6.2-liter V8 engine producing 411 horsepower and 434 lb.-ft. of torque, mated to an electronic six-speed SelectShift Automatic® transmission with tow/haul mode. Raptor SuperCrew is rated to tow up to 8,000 pounds, complementing its unparalleled off-road capabilities.

on all service and parts purchases!

Don’t let a good price on a vehicle be offset by a higher-thannecessary interest rate. Auto loans are relatively easy to get. First, lending institutions know they’ll get their money back because the loan is backed by the collateral of the vehicle. Second, dealers will bend over backwards to sell you a car, and getting you financed is not only part of the process, it’s also a huge source of extra profit. 1. Shop around before you visit the dealership. Compare interest rates at various financial institutions, such as banks, thrifts, and credit unions, as well as the dealership. 2. Keep an eye on the total cost of the loan. The term (duration) of a loan determines your monthly payment and the total purchase price of the vehicle. A shorter term for a loan means higher monthly payments but less money paid overall. Try to keep the length of the loan as short as possible. A threeyear loan costs you far less overall than a four- or five-year loan at the same interest rate. 3. Don’t be lured into buying a car just because of a low interest rate. Auto manufacturers often provide low interest rates in order to push slow-selling models. During the last year, for instance, a number of automakers have provided 0%

and other very low rates. Such deals can save you money, but go in with a healthy skepticism. Sometimes, the dealer will refuse to budge from the manufacturer’s suggested retail price in a 0% deal, sticking you with a higher-priced car. Lowinterest rates are also no bargain if they persuade you to buy a car that you’re not happy with.

4. Remember, your credit record affects your interest rate. If in doubt, check your credit score before you start looking for a loan. Having a sterling credit score can get you a better interest rate than having a poor score. The 0% rates, for instance, are typically available only to buyers with good credit scores.

5. Keep financing discussions separate from vehicle-price negotiations. If you plan to finance your car through the dealership, nail down the price for the vehicle before you bring up the loan. Many salespeople like to mix the vehicle price and loan together as one negotiation, often by focusing on the monthly payment figure. Don’t be drawn into doing this. The tactic gives a salesperson more latitude to give you a favorable figure in one area while inflating a figure in another area.

At Causeway, we will help you with this important descision with no hassles. Stop in today to see our friendly, helpful sales staff.

Honda quietly debuted the updated-for-2013 Europeanmarket CR-Z at the Paris auto show, and the company’s changes address a key complaint about the current car: its lack of power. Before this refresh, the CR-Z’s 1.5-liter four-cylinder and electric-

motor combo was good for just 122 hp. For 2013, Honda has given both the gas engine and the electric motor a boost. The 1.5-liter four’s output increases from 113 hp to 119, and the electric motor is 7-hp beefier. As a result, combined power rises from 122 hp to 130, and peak torque swells from 123 lbft to 140. (With the automatic transmission, torque tops at 127 lb-ft.) What’s even better news is that these changes now have been confirmed for our market, too.

TEST DRIVE!

motor’s power bump. More accelerative fun comes by way of a new, F1 KERS–style Plus Sport boost setup, which gives the driver additional electricmotor assist with the push of a steering-wheel button. The feature is only operable if the battery has more than a 50 percent charge, and the boost lasts up to 10 seconds. Even with the increased power, fuel economy edges up slightly from last year. CR-Zs with the continuously variable transmission add 1 mpg in the city for an EPA rating of 36/39. With the stick, it’s the highway number that improves by one, leaving the 2013 at 31/38. Honda claims the added power should trim several tenths off of the CR-Z’s 0-to-60 times; we clocked one at 9.6 seconds back in 2010. Not to be difficult, but the Mazda 3 is rated at 28/40 and delivers 60 mph in just 7.9 seconds. And it’s fun to drive.

Okay, so 130 horses still isn’t going to unseat your average minivan in a stoplight drag race, but we’ll take any power increase we can get. Honda attributes the additional power to a reprogrammed engine computer, a revised variable valve-timing setup, and an updated crankshaft. The company also swapped the car’s nickel-metal hydride battery pack for a more modern Stop by Causeway Honda to lithium-ion unit; the move is responsible for the electric test drive one today!

As the hybrid and plug-in hybrid wars have begun to heat up during the past year, it’s easy to forget Honda’s sporty and impractical CR-Z hybrid even exists. When the two-seat CR-Z was introduced to our market for 2011, we found it to be reasonably engaging to drive, albeit slow and a car that tried to satisfy both enthusiasts and hypermilers without total success. Apparently, consumers have had an equally lukewarm reaction to the little two-seater, snapping up roughly just 11,000 of them in 2011, and only 3461 more through September of this year. The CR-Z needs a shot in the arm, and Honda has given it one in the form of a light refresh and a power bump.
