SOUTHERN OCEAN LBI TRIATHLON/DUATHLON 2016

ROTARY Fights Hunger By: Maureen Kelly Raso

I am pleased to announce that on November 5th 2016, I will be the co-chairperson for a “STOP HUNGER NOW” meal packing event with Rotary District 7500 in Ocean County. Every day 25,000 people die from hunger and hunger-related causes. Supplying a sustainable school feeding program in a developing country can double or triple enrollment. Education is proven to provide a way out of poverty and to decrease birth and infant mortality rates. These food packaging events have made a considerable difference in the lives of school children and malnourished in over 30 developing countries. Please join me and my Rotary district in the movement to end hunger in our lifetime! Help us reach our goal to package 20,088 + meals. Working together we can create a world without hunger. Volunteers needed, according to Stop Hunger Now, 40-50 people can pack 10,0000 meals in two hours. We therefore project we will need 80-100 volunteers to work two hour shifts (9-11 and 11:301:30) to pack 20,088 meals. Also we will need 10-12 strong individuals that can help unpack the truck at delivery from 7:30 to 8:30am. Our goal is to raise $5,825.00, and package 20,088 meals. Each meal cost 29 cents, each package contains 6 meals $1.74. Every box is 216 meals or $62.64. So we can go up by box count. The sky is the limit! Below is the link to register for a donation and or participate in this event. http://events.stophungernow.org/manahawkinnj I appreciate any and all help that you may provide, May God bless you and your family. Maureen

2015 Trophy winners Brielle Elementary school

The Federation of New Jersey Food Banks challenges all students, staff, teachers and parents to think of those less fortunate throughout the school year by organizing a food drive at their school, beginning in Monday, September 19 through Monday, December 12. New Jersey schools will compete with each other to collect as much food as possible for their local food bank. At the end of the challenge, the schools that bring the most food will be presented with awards by their local food bank. It was a record year in 2015, with a total of 235 schools participating statewide, gathering 174,023 pounds of food and over $44,000 in monetary contributions! Students Change Hunger is a statewide school food drive competition. The challenge gives students, parents, teachers and staff an opportunity to help those less fortunate during the holiday season. Schools are categorized by the size of their student

The schools that bring in the most food in their division are given special awards at the end of the competition. In addition, one school is given the top prize, the Governor’s Cup. The Governor’s Cup, endorsed by Governor Chris Christie, is awarded for school spirit, advocacy, and active participation throughout the competition. Students Change Hunger 2016 will start on Monday, September 19 and extend through Monday, December 12. It’s early, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start collecting now! FORD ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO EXPLORE STEAM FIELDS, PROVIDING INSPIRATION WITH GIRLS’ FAST TRACK RACES

Ford Motor Company is collaborating with four Girl Scouts Councils – Tropical Florida, Southeastern Michigan, Northeast Texas and Northern New Jersey – on a program that offers avenues for elementary school students to explore STEAM-related fields in science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Girls’ Fast Track Races is providing handson experience in vehicle engineering and design to 200 Brownies and 200 Juniors from each of the participating councils. Through the program, young girls are given the opportunity to learn about automotive science and engineering by building their own track race cars. “We believe that all young children have an aptitude for technical subjects – what’s often lacking is the encouragement and additional support to succeed,” said Tracy Magee, Ford primary brand experiential manager. “Ford is deeply committed to education and through creative programs such as the Girls’ Fast Track Races, we hope to spark excitement among the youth and inspire them to pursue future careers in high-tech fields.” Ford’s newly launched STEAM Experience works with longstanding Ford programs and outside organizations to help unify, shine a light on, and expand opportunities that inspire and enable students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, art and math. It serves as a hub for creativity and learning. Girls’ Fast Track Races – one of the many Ford STEAM Experience programs - is designed to

provide encouragement and motivation to the four participating councils as they work to build and race their own cars. Race details are as follows: Southeastern Michigan Council: 11 a.m., Oct. 15, Athletics Center O’Rena, Oakland University Rochester Hills, Michigan Northeast Texas Council: 11 a.m., Oct. 29, Curtis Culwell Center,

Garland, Texas Tropical Florida Council: 12 p.m., Nov. 6, Fernandez Family Center, St. Thomas University, Miami Gardens, Florida Northern New Jersey: venue and time to be announced at a later date Ford knows diversity is imperative to future innovations. “As an expert in engineering, Ford has a unique opportunity to bring this fun and educational experience to girls and the youth-at-large,” said Magee. Girls’ Fast Track Races gives participants the opportunity to connect and compete at the highest level – all while sparking creativity to ensure a brighter future, not just for Ford, but for the entire community. “Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas is excited to team up with Ford Motor Company, to inspire these members who are interested in science, technology, engineering and math,” said Jennifer Bartkowski, CEO Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas. “Girls need opportunities to expand their realm of what’s possible. Through this collaboration, girls will get to explore STEAM concepts and careers as they design, test and race their own cars.” Johnette Hardiman, chair of the board of directors, Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida says scouting builds courage, confidence and character. “Our girls want to make the world a better place,” she says. A BEHIND-THE-SCENES LOOK AT MANUFACTURING THE NISSAN TITAN XD

Since its introduction in 2003, the Nissan TITAN has been built in one place – Canton, Mississippi, a town north of the state capital and home to about 13,000. A white Nissan water tower dots the sky above Canton, while the sprawling 4.7 million-square-foot plant – the Nissan Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant – just off the main highway has a staff of 6,400 working on its more than 1,000 acres. In many ways, the mighty truck’s history is the plant’s own story, and staff refer to the vehicle like no other produced there, proudly calling it “Canton’s TITAN.” “All TITANs made have come out of this plant,” said chief engineer Erik Fields. “The new Titan XD gives pride because we’ve been able to see something grow.” To accommodate production of the latest edition of the TITAN, factory lines were modified to accommodate the sheer size and weight of the new truck, which comes in multiple sizes, engines, colors and technological specifications. Canton has produced over 3 million vehicles in its history, including the Nissan TITAN, Murano, Altima, Armada and Frontier. The new TITAN, however, has an even more complex and rigorous build process, meaning up to 16 hours are required in the metamorphosis from coiled steel to ready-to-drive wheels that are loaded onto a semi truck before delivery to dealerships and

Nissan today officially launched production of its all-new 2016 Nissan TITAN XD full-size pickup with Job One ceremonies at its Canton, Mississippi assembly facility. Speaking at the ceremony were José Muñoz, executive vice president, Nissan Motor Company, Ltd. and chairman, Nissan North America, Inc.; Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant; Mississippi Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves; and Steve Marsh, vice president, Manufacturing, Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant.

Amirr is also a key player on the edge for the Ram run defense.

HUNGER FOUNDATION

Written by Adam Binder Photos By Farrell Henderson

Hunger and food insecurity continue to be significant problems globally, nationally, and right here in our own community. In New Jersey, one in five children are not sure where their next meal is coming from, and approximately 165,500 elderly and disabled residents rely on food assistance. The Hunger Foundation of Southern Ocean (HFOSO.org) has a 20-year history of working in the community to provide much needed financial support to local food banks through fundraising events and donations. Their mission statement reads: “We are a local, all volunteer non-profit organization with a mission to support local food pantries as they assist our residents with their basic food needs, and to help educate the public of the basic food needs of individuals and families in our area.” Food pantries always have trouble keeping up, and often their shelves are almost empty. Food drives and donations help to supply food pantries, and typically focus on non-perishables for obvious reasons. Still, fresh foods such as fruits and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet and should be provided alongside canned and boxed goods whenever possible.

In addition to their fundraising events held throughout the year, the Hunger Foundation helps local food pantries through the Stafford Community Garden at Lake Manahawkin. It is the hope of the Hunger Foundation that the Community Garden will promote involvement and increase awareness about the ever-growing need for hunger relief right here in our backyards. This grassroots project also provides fresh, locally grown produce to those in need of food assistance in the community. While donations are necessary to support the garden, volunteers are vitally important as well. After all, what good are seeds and fertilizer if there is no one to plant the seeds and tend their growth? Volunteers of all ages are always welcome, from children to

retirees. Hands-on learning about composting, rain barrel water conservation, and more takes place while volunteers enjoy fresh air, sunshine, and community connections. Without diminishing the ultimate goal of feeding those in need, the Community Garden offers many recreational and educational opportunities for the community as well. Volunteering in the garden is a wonderful group activity for local community groups like the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and other clubs and civic organizations. Recreation programs, such as Spring Work Days, Fall Mulch Workshops, Fall Clean Ups, and summer camp day trips bring old and young together, actively building community. While the Hunger Foundation supports the Community Garden through various fundraising efforts throughout the year, the financial cost of the garden is kept low through the use of repurposed materials and, of course, the work of volunteers. The center is junior Bill Rolenc, the right guard is senior Dylan Smith and the right tackle spot will be manned by juniors Mike Levine and Dave Lowman. Also working in at guard are senior Mike Conforti and junior Zach Otte. Defense has been the calling card for Southern’s most successful teams under Donohue, and if the Rams are to turn in a bounce-back season defensive coordinator Matt Abbato’s unit will have to improve on allowing 25.1 points per game last season. The horses are there to make it happen in the 50 front base with nine starters back, including the entire secondary. Otte and Amirr are back as the defensive ends while VandeVelde is a returning starter at defensive tackle. Stepping into a starting role at the other defensive tackle spot is 6-foot-3, 275-pound junior Terrick Grace, who saw some time last season. The nose guard is 6-foot-2, 290-pound sophomore Sean MacGillivray. Joe Miele and Walker are the middle linebackers and could both be on the field at the same time depending on the formation. By volunteering, people are not only helping people in need and giving back to the community, but they also learn valuable skills and enjoy the satisfaction of working for a larger purpose. By: Donna Stroffolino, Simply Hair A new season brings ideas for change in our routines and summer look. So long are the carefree wash and go beach looks or the ‘go to’ ponytail. Living at the Shore we can still look a bit relaxed, but a little more polish is a good idea to update with the change of season.

Semi-permanent hair color refreshes your natural hair or when some grays makes it look too dull. It adds shine and bounce by covering the hair strands, which we all love! If you need more coverage for grays coming in quicker than you like, permanent hair color is the way to go. The old fashion dark matt hair colors of the past have been updated with beautiful shine and conditioning gray coverage formulas to make you feel Alex Zenorovitz won Toruk Cirque Du Soleil ticket great and younger again. adding some color variations in it. Another idea is to add some lighter brown pieces around your face if you have darker hair, or some brighter colored ones to compliment your red or blonde hair. If you have hightlights all over they tend to get too blonde by the end of the summer. It is flattering to tone them down to a softer look, and add in some low lights or warmer complimentary tones.

For women our hair style and its color is a strong confidence builder, and keeping it fresh makes us feel good to go about our busy everyday lives. What also helps us feel confident is a fresh clean face. Spending 10 minutes before bed to give your face a good clean and moisturize does wonders for skin. I hear many women tell me they don’t wear makeup because they don’t know what to wear and how to do it. It could be a very simple 10 minutes in the morning of moisturizer and mascara and lip balm, to a bigger change and 20 minutes. There are so many products on the market it is very easy to be confused what to wear and how much. It’s always easier to start with your basics to enhance your features softly. A little tinted moisturizer, or light stoke of some blush gives you a rosey awake look. If you are looking to change your summer no makeup look, just add a touch with some mascara and light lipstick so you don’t feel too done up and not like yourself. A touch of soft kohl pencil on your eyes and brow makes even more of a difference.

Changing into a new season with your clothes is the best time to make a few changes to feel fresh. We all have friends that are good at something. Grab that friend to help you with a little makeup, or see your Stylist for ideas with your hair. With all the modern technology at our fingertips you can look up some ideas you like and will feel comfortable with within a few minutes. We all like to feel good and confident and it can only be some simple changes to start the Fall off for us. Next month we can continue our updating with transforming into some Fall clothes as the season gets cooler each week.

LINCOLN PHILANTHROPIC CAMPAIGN

Numbers Rise As Vehicle Excitement Builds

The highly anticipated, all-new Lincoln Continental will be part of The Lincoln Motor Company’s national philanthropic campaign this fall, helping raise money for educational and charitable organizations. Driven to Give, a philanthropic program that began in 2011 as a way for Lincoln dealers to work with nonprofit organizations and give back to their communities, has raised more $6.2 million since its inception and $1.5 million last year alone. The program allows Lincoln dealers across the country to give back to their communities by working with schools and charitable organizations; it continues to increase in popularity as anticipation builds around Lincoln’s lineup of vehicles. “We’re proud that we’re able to contribute to these causes,” said John Emmert, Lincoln group marketing manager. “And we’re excited that people will have the opportunity to

drive our vehicles, particularly the allnew Lincoln Continental.” Here’s how the campaign works: Dealerships work with local groups to host a one-day event. For each participant that test-drives an eligible Lincoln vehicle, Lincoln donates $20 to the organization. Additional test drives in designated bonus vehicles earn a supplementary $20 donation, meaning a single participant can raise up to $40 for their organization. The spring bonus vehicle was the 2016 Lincoln MKX and for the fall session, it will be the 2017 Lincoln MKZ. The all-new 2017 Lincoln Continental will be eligible for test drives during the fall session. Driven to Give allows Lincoln dealerships nationwide to give back to the community while showcasing Lincoln vehicles and establishing personal relationships with new and potential Lincoln clients. -www.media.lincoln.com

Sararie Ma

Your fate, fortune and family forecast with Sara Marie.

Not knowing where you’re at or what you really wanna do is unsettling but doesn’t have to be tragic. If there are weird dynamics in your squad, it doesn’t have to be a big deal, and it’s certainly not forever. Confront weird feels with kindness, so you can flush out any problems with ease. This month may find you with the challenge of holding up a friend who isn’t really helping themselves; the line between enabling and supporting is a fine one, my friend.

It’s time to consider the role that fear has been playing in your life, lover. Evading crappy thoughts can for sure lead to good livin’, but it can also be a ploy to try and pretend that you’re feeling something that you’re not. Let bishes love you, Libra. Share the good, the fierce, and the ugly with your fam, even if you barely want to face it yourself. It’s your Birthday, and you’re gonna be showered with love and good times: yay! The good doesn’t undo the rough, so let them coexist in a black lipstick and white frilly dress kinda way.

From the 4th through the 8th, it’s time to be on guard for weird stuff with your crew. You may feel like you’re being diplomatic and find that bishes have a different idea about things. Be honest with yourself about what you’re really feeling, so you don’t act nicey-nice and end up coming off as fake. If you’re in an intense place or hella bugged by people, figure out if you need to take some space or just come forward with more honesty. It’s possible to be cunty and kind at the same time, Aries; the trick is to be straightforward and compassionate while you do you.

On the 24th, Venus, the planet of love and beauty, enters into your relationship house; and it’s all-good, Taurus. Make friend time a top priority by throwing parties or curating quality hang time with the babes you love. In order for your friendships to thrive, you need to remember to make time to talk about things unrelated to love or just getting lit. Friendship should be more than a distraction; if you’ve been treating your fam like a placeholder for your love life, then you’ve likely got some repair work to do. Either way, investing in your friendships is worth its weight in gold.

If you’ve got abandonment issues, watch out for triggers from your fam from the 12th onwards. It’s not super likely that you’re about to be left behind as much as you might feel that way. Beware of pulling a George W. Bush and doing a preemptive strike on a friend that you fear is icing you. Don’t jump to conclusions, Scorpio. If you’re gonna assume something, assume that your bishes love you and whatever they’re doing isn’t intended to mess with you. With Venus in your sign, it can be all lovey, all day; so try and expect the best this month, Puppy.

Platonic love doesn’t get enough attention in our weird world, but your fam are the folks that hold you up when you’re down and give you a place in this world. Make space in your life for honoring your chosen family. From the 10th through the 12th is an especially great time to bring your friendships to the next level or to make new friends. Life is an adventure, but it’s a lonely one without babes that get you. If you run into conflicts in all your efforts to lavish attention on your friendships, don’t worry about it. Show up and speak your truth, and things’ll work out just fine.

The Full Moon on the 15th is going to bring with it a big emo punch. Don’t assume you get where your bishes are coming from because everyone is going through their own version of intense feels bumping up against big ideas. Make sure you’re showing up as the kind of friend you wanna be. There’s helluv energy at play this month to make you feel edgy and quick to make assumptions. Breathe through the BS and try to lead with patience and kindness.

It takes a long time to be friends – not pals – with someone. Trust is not a singular destination as much as an onion with layers that sometimes makes ya cry. While trying to build a fam you really wanna be in, don’t let bumps in the road stop you from trusting people altogether. Let the things that are troubling you also inspire you to look critically at your choices. You’ve been pushing yourself somewhat blindly to stay connected to your friends; is it time to reevaluate your connections? Or simply to invest in them with greater clarity of intent? Take the time to figure it out.

From the New Moon on the 30th onwards, this is an awesome time to invest in your homies, Leo. Don’t let shyness get in the way of letting people know how much you love and need them. Improve your listening skills, especially from the 6th through the 8th, even if all you wanna do is throw down some serious gossip. In fact, gossip can be extra fun this season, even if it’s illadvised. Talk about others only the way you want to be talked about, Kitty Kat. The seeds you plant will grow, so sew with care.

You may not exactly

Not all drama is bad; sometimes things have to come to the surface so that they can be cleared away. Whether you’ve overstepped some boundary or somebody feels that you have, you may have to honor a friends’ feels this month. You don’t have to agree with what a loved one thinks happened in order to agree that hurt feels are the pits. Don’t confuse humility and guilt, or acknowledging someone else’s feelings with an attack on your own. True friendship takes maintenance, so get to work, bb.

This is likely to be a long road if you don’t know where you stand or what you want. Instead of looking around your self for cues and reacting to where you think other people are at, try shoving all of that outta your mind for a minute. What do you want, Pisces? Don’t get so caught up in your fears that you can’t see your own self or your homies clearly. Change is inevitable, but the quality of that change is up for grabs. Show up with your most authentic self, and be patient with what unfolds from there.

know who your friends are, and that’s a weird feeling. It’s not that you don’t know bishes, it’s just that you may be feeling disconnected from your fam. Don’t assume the worst and hide away in a sad-Cap hidey-hole, Kitty Kat. Reach out to your friends and ask for help, whether you need it for something deep or for help binging on Netflix.

MAKING STRIDES FOR AUNT JEANANNE Twenty years ago, my family lost a very special woman.

By: Lorissa Peschko

CANCER… What is the first thing that comes to mind when you see or hear that word? Everyone will have a different answer, and even though those answers are all different, we can all agree the word cancer is a small word that leaves a great impact on hearts and lives of many. Twenty years ago, my family lost a very special woman. On June 4, 1996, at the young age of 36, my Aunt Jeananne passed away after a courageous battle with Breast Cancer. Anyone that knew her would say she was the life of the party, a fashionista, free spirit, gold hearted, a light-up-the-room type of person, who was taken way too soon. And like I said, cancer leaves a great impact. For me, I am sad to say that I never had the opportunity to make memories with an awesome woman, all because of that little word. For my mom, she lost a sister and best friend. For my sister, she lost her aunt, god mother, and role model. Luckily I have my mother and sister to remind me what an amazing soul she was, how much she loved, and how much I remind them of her. We stumbled across The American Cancer Society’s event - Making Strides against Breast Cancer, on my Aunt’s 10 year anniversary. We decided we wanted to do something to honor her, to give us closure, and be able to share stories. That Sunday was difficult, with just the three of us conquering a bucket of emotions in a sea of people,

“Never dissapointed” Yes there’s usually a wait but it’s worth it... Grab a beer and hang outside while you wait. Food is fresh, atmosphere is crowded but fun and light cause everyone’s there for the same reason, and the prices are appropriate. Did I mention the food is really worth it?! And you can take out... So even if you wanna do your post beach meal at home on the deck, you can swing in and grab your favorites to go!

 “Excellent meal!” My husband and I dined at Maneras on September 22nd arriving around 6:45 without a reservation. The host was able to seat us within 10 minutes even though they were quite busy. For a Thursday night this place was quite lively (and a bit loud). Our server, Priscilla, was very helpful and nice. We split a grilled veggie and mozzerella cheese appetizer which was light and refreshing. For our meal we split the 14 ounce pork chop! It was succulent, tender, juicy and simply delicious!! It came with mashed potatoes and grilled broccolini. Upon waiting for the dessert menu a table nearby offered us some of their birthday cake so that was a plus!! You do have to wait a little for your food but it is all fresh and made to order so it’s worth the wait! This is a BYOB establishment. In a strip mall but definitely worth the visit if you are in town!!

“Nice stop”

 “Great Food” You will not be disappointed with a dinner at Old Causeway Steak & Oyster House. They so not take reservations, so be prepared to wait. You may want to put your name on the list and then go home to return later. They offer several types of Oystersall are great. The Filet Mignon will be made to your taste. The restaurant is a little noisy so be prepared. If you are staying on Long Beach Island, it is worth going back over the bridge to the mainland. Make the first right over the bridge and a left at the end of the exit. The Causeway S. & O. House is a short distance up on the left.

#4 Pietro’s Pizzeria 712 E Bay Ave, Manahawkin, NJ 08050-3447

 “Best Pizza in Manahawkin and LBI Area” I’ll keep it simple. The pizza is the best in the area. The staff and service was excellent. The prices are reasonable and its BYOB. Nice place. It’s busy inside and take out is busy too. Call ahead. It’s just past Old Causeway on East Bay Ave in a shopping plaza. But, you should definitely take the trip off LBI for Pietros..

We passed this place many times on our way into LBI and finally stopped in for lunch. Glad we did atmosphere was nice with friendly staff. They have a $10 lunch special that was well worth it. Save room for dessert. Definitely will be trying a dinner some night soon.

Have been a customer of the Philly Pretzel Factory on many occasions. Recently purchased a tray of pretzels with three dips, which was a hit at a party. The pretzels and dips are terrific and the price is very reasonable. I highly recommend the Philly Pretzel Factory for all of your soft pretzel needs.

“A Surprising Find - Great Food” I read about Exit 63 seafood when looking for restaurants and added it to my list of places to try. We drove right by it a few times as we weren’t expecting a fishmonger. The place is small. When you go in - to the right, you can buy fresh seafood . It is a seafood store. But take the door to the right and there is a pleasant surprise. It is a nice small restaurant with a few tables. The service is great and the seafood is wonderful and fresh. we had fried calamari which was great and all of our seafood dishes were perfect. Don’t go by the first impression when you pull up. We almost turned around and left. Give it a try.

“Loooved it!!”

I usually never go and do a review for any place I go out to but this place was so good I just couldn’t keep it to myself and wanted to tell everybody about it. I went there for lunch to try it out and then I actually went back the next day for dinner! Th chicken paninis are very good and they have a special pink sauce that it is to die for. Their wood fired pizza is the real deal not like other places that claim to have wood fired. They have daily specials on top of their extensive menu and there is something for everyone you def will not leave hungry or unhappy!!

#7 Makoto Japanese Steak House 297 State Highway 72 W, Manahawkin, NJ 08050

A definate yes if the words leave my lips to go to Makoto. The chefs always change it up a bit although the food is so good the show is just an added benefit to the meal you are about to eat. The sushi is always fresh and delicious, the meat is lean and cooked just the way you like it. The portions are so huge its well worth the price you pay. A filet and shrimp meals with fried rice, noodles, vegetables, soup and salad for under $20 plus youll have leftovers for 2 days. Absolutely a family favorite.

“A Sub Place That Is Worth The Trip!” Most Italian restaurants in the area are same old, same old. The subs have the same low taste level meats and cheeses plus watery lettuce. Not at any Jersey Mike’s I have ever been to. The franchising company must inspect their franchise stores frequently since the stores hold to the company standard very well. The sandwiches are top shelf. A full sub is large enough to get it cut into 4 pieces with each piece wrapped separately. The meats and cheeses are excellent. The steaks are the best in the area. Both the subs and steaks are a real handful. You get both quality and value here. This particular store does not have the most easy to find location though.

PROGRESS REPORT: NFC EAST By: Chad Scanlon

One of the best aspects of the NFL is how seldom the outcome of the regular season matches the expectations of the preseason. It’s the 17-week regular season. It’s a league full of injuries. And it’s the idea that on “any given Sunday,” any team has a chance to win. That’s what makes this league so special. Fortunately for those of us in the Tri-State Area, the NFC East is a perfect microcosm of the exciting world of the NFL. As of this writing, weeks 1 and 2 are in the books, and the NFC East surely isn’t where the experts thought it would be. The Giants are 2-0, and their offense hasn’t even shown up yet. Eli is one of the league’s top-rated passers with a 73.9% completion percentage, yet Odell Beckham Jr. has yet to reach the end zone. Victor Cruz has already added some much needed aerial support for Eli and co, but this would-be explosive offense has yet to find its spark. Defensively, the deft moves made by the front office in the offseason are paying off. Ranked #9 overall, they held Drew Brees and the Saints to a pedestrian 13 points. The Eagles sit at 2-0 also, with both a top-5 defense and the unexpected poise of Carson Wentz leading the way. If NFL positions were table games in a casino, then rookie quarterbacks would have the worst odds. The 2nd overall pick in this year’s draft seems to have been worth the bet. He has 3 touchdowns over 2 games without an interception. While the season is early and the sample size small, Wentz has shown the intangible qualities needed to be an effective leader on the field. Under the tutelage of former quarterback and new head coach Doug Pederson, the Eagles’ future looks promising. The Dallas Cowboys were considered one of the likely contenders to lead this division. With a healthy Tony Romo and fresh legs in rookie running back Ezekiel Elliot, it looked as if the Cowboy offense was finally set up for success. Unfortunately, but somewhat predictably, Romo suffered an injury during preseason. Ezekiel Elliot has been productive,

and Pro Bowl wide receiver Dez Bryant is always a scoring threat, but the biggest surprise has been the performance of 4th round pick, rookie quarterback Dak Prescott. His stats aren’t flashy, but he has shown confidence in the pocket without committing any turnovers. Dallas’ defense hasn’t exactly turned any heads, but they’re also playing without a handful of their starters, 3 of whom were suspended in the offseason. At 1-1 and 3rd place in the division, they are holding their own despite the depletion of starters. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the 0-2 record of the Washington Redskins, who won the division in 2015, and were heavily favored to repeat that performance. Both losses came at home, the second of which was a heartbreaking, 4-point deficit against divisional foe Dallas Cowboys. Questions abound about the efficacy of Kirk Cousins, who earned himself a hefty raise after a stellar performance in 2015. They have no shortage of offensive weapons, from Cousins to Desean Jackson and Pro Bowl tight end Jordan Reed. Head Coach Jay Gruden hasn’t been pulling any punches, heavily critiquing all facets of the team’s performance. The standings aren’t where most experts thought they’d be, but it’s still early enough for anything to happen. While this may be true for every division in the NFL, the NFC East is arguably the best example. And since you asked, my money is on the Eagles to win the division. That’s an unbiased opinion, mind you. I’m a 49ers fan and we’re not playing the NFC East this year.

VERSATILE AND FUN 2017 HONDA FIT

CONTINUES TO RACK UP AWARDS AND RECOGNITION

On-sale starting tomorrow, the 2017 Honda Fit marks its 10th anniversary in America as the third generation of Honda’s versatile 5-door subcompact hatchback, first introduced to the U.S. in 2006 as a 2007 model. The Honda Fit has continued to receive accolades as a standout in the subcompact category, recently earning praise from U.S. News & World Report as Best Hatchback for the Money, and one of America’s 10 Best Back-to-School Cars of 2016 by KBB.com. For the 2017 model year, Lunar Silver metallic replaces Alabaster Silver metallic in the exterior color palette. Fit starts at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $15,9901 while continuing to offer the functionality, fun and refinement that defines the model together with modern styling, a dynamic driving experience and available technology and luxury features. Versatility Fundamental to its design, the 2017 Fit offers class-leading passenger volume, cargo volume (52.7 cu ft. with rear seats down), and versatility, courtesy of its center-mounted fuel tank and ingenious Magic Seat®. The Fit epitomizes smart functionality with spacious and comfortable seating for five and the ability to carry voluminous cargo, including long and tall items. The interior features a remarkable 95.7 cubic feet in passenger volume and 39.3 inches of rear seat leg room. To put this in perspective, Honda Fit’s rear legroom is more generous than most midsize cars – in some instances offering nearly four more inches of legroom to rear-seat passengers. Chassis & Powertrain A highly space-efficient body structure pairs with the chassis for a rigid and lightweight platform with a long wheelbase, providing sporty handling with a steering linearity that gives the driver a sense of oneness with the vehicle. The Fit’s fun-todrive character includes acceleration performance provided by the Earth Dreams™ Technology engine mated to either of two transmissions – a slick-shifting 6-speed manual or a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with G-Shift Control – increasing both performance and fuel efficiency. The 1.5L 4-cylinder engine has a DOHC cylinder head with i-VTEC+VTC valve and timing control plus direct fuel injection, the first use of such a system in a Honda subcompact. The engine delivers 130 horsepower @ 6,800 rpm and 114 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,600 rpm (both SAE net).

Fuel Economy The Fit has an EPA fuel-economy rating2 of 29/36/32 (city/highway/ combined) for the manual transmission, 33/40/36 for the LX trim with CVT and 32/37/34 for the EX and EX-L trim with CVT. The 6MT optimizes close individual ratios to aid performance while offering a wide overall range to improve fuel efficiency. The CVT enhances engine responsiveness, providing quick and smooth acceleration while improving fuel efficiency with a wide ratio range and low internal friction. Exterior Providing an outward expression of the 2017 Fit’s handling and power is a sporty exterior design. A progressive and purposeful style is achieved by the slim headlights that integrate into a solid grille design, an aggressive lower intake and the linear slope of the hood and windshield. The purposeful style continues with the strong design of the chiseled sides that emphasize the wheels and the dynamically tapered roofline ending in a colormatched spoiler. To accentuate the exterior styling, the Fit is available in eight colors, including several vibrant options. Interior Inside, the Fit’s interior room and visibility create a sense of airy spaciousness, which is complemented by soft-touch materials that raise the feeling of quality. The rich and sophisticated black with silver accented design of the interior surfaces and controls, and blue backlit instrument dials are stylish and functional. The Fit’s available Display Audio touchscreen interface and leather seating (EX-L models) further increase its premium feel. For 2017, the Fit again aligns with other Honda models by being offered in LX, EX, and EX-L trims, each with a higher spec than the previous equivalent trim. Standard features on all Fit models include auto on-off headlights, LED brake lights, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® and a center storage console with armrest. Items such as Smart Entry Push Button Start, a one-touch operated moonroof, 7-inch touchscreen Display Audio with nextgeneration HondaLink, and heated leather seats are among the upgrades available in the Fit. Safety Performance The Fit also features a long list of standard safety features. That list includes Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with traction control, side curtain airbags with rollover sensor, Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, and Honda’s next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure. The Fit also received the 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Standard drive-assistive features on all trims include a multiangle rearview camera with guidelines; the Honda LaneWatch™ display is standard on EX and above trims. -www.hondanews.com
