CURE

10 years ago, I never thought I’d be a “runner.” Then I ran a 5k. I figured I’d never run a longer race than that. Then I ran the LBI 18 Mile Run. Then a marathon. Then 5 more. Along the way I ran a few of them in other states, and even managed to qualify for the Boston Marathon. I figured I might run another marathon sometime, but I was in no hurry. And I certainly didn’t feel the need to challenge myself by running a longer distance. For many runners, the next step is the vaunted Ultra Marathon. Ultramarathons comprise races of varying distances, all them longer than 26.2 miles. The usual suspects are 50k (31miles), 50 miles, or 100 miles. They’re typically on trails, and are seldom flat. Because of the distance and amount of time spent running, ultra-marathons are grueling efforts. For the 50-milers and beyond, you’re looking at probably a minimum of 8 hours spent running and hiking. And that’s if you’re fast. It’s not Continued on page 5

Memories help to define who we are as individuals, helping us to recall events or milestones, activities, conversations, faces and so much more, but do you know how you are able to recollect your memories? There are three stages to making and recalling a memory: encoding, storage and retrieval of information. Most memories are created by some type of experience, and with each new one, your brain slightly rewires and reorganizes itself to make room for the creation of another memory. As much as we would like to hold on to every moment, we lose memories along the way. Sometimes, memory loss consists of a complete loss, while in other cases, individuals lose only a group of items rather than the whole experience. There are many causes of memory loss, but the most common include impaired concentration, aging, medication, illness, stress, intoxication and trauma. Although forgetfulness is normal, particularly as we begin to age, the loss of memories can sometimes indicate a more

serious issue. For example, if you or someone you know experience memory loss that disrupts daily activities such as maintaining personal hygiene, driving, regularly forgetting appointments or frequently forgetting where you may have parked your car, it may be time to undergo a medical assessment. Other warning signs could also include forgetting the names of relatives or close friends, frequently repeating yourself or asking the same questions throughout the course of one conversation. However, there is hope when it comes to improving your memory. By eating highpowered brain foods and maintaining a healthy diet, not smoking, engaging in social activities, exercising regularly, getting a solid night’s sleep and keeping your brain active by reading, writing or playing games, you could help to improve your memory. If you or a loved one are experiencing memory problems, or would like to better understand the warning signs, please join us on Friday, January 20 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Meridian Fitness and Wellness in Manahawkin as Tommasina Papa-Rugino, M.D., speaks on the topic of maintaining and improving memories.. Free screenings will also follow the lecture. You can register for the event by calling 1-800-560-9990. To learn more about Meridian Neuroscience, visit www.MeridianNeuroscience.com.

FORD RAISES THE BAR AGAIN: NEW F-150 PICKUP IS EVEN TOUGHER, SMARTER, MORE CAPABLE

Ford, America’s truck leader, introduces the new 2018 Ford F-150 – now even tougher, even smarter and even more capable than ever. Three years after first introducing the highstrength, military-grade, aluminum-alloy-bodied Ford F-150, the new F-150 arrives with bold new front and rear styling, advanced technologies – including available Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection – and improved engines. The new engines include an all-new 3.0-liter Power Stroke® V6 turbo diesel and enhanced V6 and V8 gas engines. “Truck customers are constantly looking to improve their productivity, for work and for play,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford President, The Americas. “Since 1977, we’ve been America’s favorite truck, and we’ve never taken that leadership for granted. This new F-150 is our latest example of Ford’s commitment to going further for our customers through continuous innovation.” The 2018 F-150 is part of the Ford F-Series truck lineup, America’s best-selling truck for 40 consecutive years and America’s best-selling vehicle for 35 years. Ford is previewing the new truck today during the FOX NFL Wildcard Pregame Show, which airs starting at 4 p.m. today. Ford is the Official Truck of the NFL. The truck will be revealed on Monday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Even tougher The new F-150 delivers on its Built Ford Tough promise through a segment-exclusive combination of advanced materials that are durable and inhibit corrosion. A high-strength steel fully boxed ladder frame and high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy body save weight and add capability, helping F-150 tow heavier trailers than ever and deliver best-inclass payload ratings. The 2018 F-150 lineup is new with even tougher looks. From XL to top-of-the-line Limited, all Ford F-150 models receive new grilles, headlamps and bumpers that create a visually wider and more planted stance and maximum differentiation between the series. On the Sport Package-equipped Lariat F-150, the signature twin bars are painted body color for a custom athletic appearance. Further enhancing its “milled from a block of high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy” look, the F-150 features six all-new wheel designs, ranging from 17 inches to 22 inches in diameter.

A new sculpted tailgate with deeper accent form and stamped “F-150” are flanked by new tail lamp designs. For further style differentiation, a tailgate applique adds a horizontal element to King Ranch, Platinum and Limited versions. F-150 also brings two new seating trim colors – Dark Marsala for F-150 Platinum, while top-of-the-line F-150 Limited offers a Navy Pier environment. New trim offerings including carbon fiber appearance appliques on F-150 XLT Sport and Lariat Sport models, while the famed F-150 King Ranch features new Kingsville Appointed seats. Even smarter Ford F-150 advances the light-duty pickup truck

segment again with segment-first and class-exclusive technologies that improve productivity, efficiency and driver confidence, while keeping occupants connected to the world around them. New enhanced segment-first available adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality allows drivers to set a cruising speed. They then use radar and camera technology to monitor traffic ahead to maintain a set distance between vehicles – even following a vehicle down to a complete stop. New, segment-first available Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection helps the driver avoid or mitigate collisions with vehicles and pedestrians. With a new available embedded 4G LTE modem for a Wi-Fi hot spot, customers can connect up to 10 mobile devices at one time, virtually anywhere. New B&O PLAY available audio system takes advantage of high-end speakers, sound and tuning to deliver a richer, more engaging listening experience. These technologies join existing segmentexclusive driver assist and convenience features that include: Available SYNC® and SYNC 3 with FordPass enables compatibility of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – plus mobility services to help customers move more efficiently Available 360-degree camera technology helps improve driver confidence when parking and can help reduce stress when connecting a trailer – allowing customers to see more so they can focus on specific

An all-new second-generation 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine features advanced dual port and direct injection technology, reduced internal friction and improved robustness – all for improved levels of output, efficiency, quality and durability. Like the 3.5-liter EcoBoost, the 2.7-liter EcoBoost will be paired to the segment-exclusive 10-speed automatic transmission for 2018. The 5.0-liter V8 also sees improvements in 2018, as the naturally aspirated engine features significant upgrades for increased power and torque. It’s also paired with the 10-speed automatic transmission for the first time. The 2018 F-150 also adds an available all-new 3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel engine, designed, engineered and tested in-house and paired with the 10-speed automatic transmission. It’s the first-ever diesel engine offered for F-150. In addition to the segment-first 10-speed automatic, the Ford F-150 is now the first full-size pickup truck to add automatic start/stop as standard equipment across all models and engines. The new 2018 F-150 goes on sale this fall. It will be built at Dearborn Truck Plant in Dearborn, Michigan, and Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Missouri. -www.media.ford.com

2017 NISSAN ROGUE SPORT TAKES THE STAGE AT NAIAS – JOINS RECORD-BREAKING ROGUE LINEUP THIS SPRING

The new 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport, which is designed to expand the audience for Nissan’s topselling Rogue crossover when it goes on sale this spring, is set to make its auto show debut this morning at the North American International Auto Show. The redesigned Rogue broke Nissan’s all-time U.S. single month sales record for an individual model in December 2016 with sales of 40,477 units. Rogue also passed Nissan’s longtime sales leader, Altima, for the 2016 calendar year Nissan U.S. sales crown. The new Rogue Sport will be joined on stage by a new Nissan sedan concept. Presenting the two new vehicles will be José Muñoz, Chief Performance Officer, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.; Chairman, Nissan North America, Inc., and Shiro Nakamura, Senior Vice President, Chief Creative Officer, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. “The new Rogue Sport is a perfect addition to the red hot Rogue lineup, which is also adding a firstever Rogue Hybrid model for 2017,” said Michael Bunce, vice president, Product Planning, Nissan North America, Inc. “With Rogue Sport’s slightly smaller dimensions and sporty maneuverability, it’s ideal for singles or couples without kids – or empty nesters – who want a sportier vehicle and can live with a little less cargo capacity than the current Rogue offers.” Rogue Sport has a 2.3-inch shorter wheelbase and a 12.1-inch shorter overall length than Rogue, helping make it more maneuverable in city traffic and an ideal size for tight city parking spaces. Other

helpful city adventure features range from up to 61.1 cubic feet of cargo space (2nd row seat folded) and available innovative Divide-N-Hide® Cargo System to the Around View® Monitor (AVM) with Moving Object Detection (MOD)1. Rogue Sport offers available Nissan Intelligent Safety Shield technologies including Forward Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection2, Intelligent Cruise Control3, Rear Cross Traffic Alert4 and Forward Emergency Braking2. Rogue Sport is offered with a standard 141-horsepower 2.0-liter DOHC 16-valve inline

4-cylinder Direct Injection Gasoline (DIG™) system engine and Xtronic transmission. It goes on sale at Nissan dealers nationwide – in a choice of S, SV and SL grade levels – beginning in spring 2017. The Nissan sedan concept, which will be revealed at this morning’s media event in the Nissan display at the North American International Auto Show, combines a look at the Nissan’s future design direction while also providing hints at the future of Nissan Intelligent Mobility – the company’s roadmap to achieving zero emissions and zero fatalities. -www.nissannews.com

Making a vague resolution rarely ends in success. “I want to lose weight, doesn’t take into account all the details of By Deidra Lipowski-Honda what needs to be done to Sales and former Weight change for the long run. It takes work, patience, and living a healthy lifestyle becomes second nature. Running to raise money for those who can’t! By Chad Scanlon - Salesperson, Runner, Author and Philanthropist

Ultra-marathons comprise races of varying distances, all them longer than 26.2 miles. It’s not just about speed and endurance though. It’s arguably more about fueling than any other factor. If you’re going to run for 10 hours, you’re going to have to eat. Add to that- blisters, swollen feet, and the likelihood of complete physical exhaustion and utter mental demoralization, and you’ve got a recipe for a lifechanging experience. Or so I’ve been told. I’ve never done one, and up until a few weeks ago, I swore I never would.

Carmelena Cares is a 501(c)(3) charity located in Toms River. Founded in 2011, they help Children in Ocean and Monmouth counties with disabilities get specialized equipment, therapy, and other assistance. As an example, my nephew has cerebral palsy. Many of his needs are covered by insurance, but some things fall through the cracks. In his case, Carmelena Cares presented him with a specialized bicycle. It’s modified to compensate for the limited motor function in his legs, granting him the ability to feel the joy of a riding a bike like any other kid. It also helps those weaker leg muscles get stronger by allowing them to work in ways they usually can’t. And the smile on his face when he got it? Priceless. I guess it was an “aha” moment. Suddenly the thought popped into my head that I should run for a cause. It’s not like the idea of running for a charity was foreign to me. I’ve read about Team in Training, Team Hoyt, and I always joked that maybe I’d bypass the lottery system for the NYC Marathon by running for a charity, but I can honestly say I’d never seriously considered running for anything other than my usual, selfish reasons. They’re good reasons, don’t get me wrong: stay healthy, reduce stress, work toward fitness goals, etc. I promise you though, while

those reasons may be positive, they’re 100% about me. They begin and end with “I.” Sure, you could argue that my entry fee for whatever race I’m running benefits whatever cause the race is promoting, and I’m probably a better son, friend, and employee when I’m running regularly. But those reasons aren’t altruistic. They’re just harmless byproducts that can’t be measured and have no tangible effects. I can’t lie, part of this goal is self-centered. I won’t deny the personal satisfaction and spiritual growth I hope to attain if I finish this thing. So I don’t know if I can call this fundraiser completely altruistic. I just figured if I was going to try something like a 50-mile run, I might as well do it for charity. And if I was going to do it for charity, it might as well be one with which I have some personal connection. So, I asked my sister what local organization has had a direct impact on Jacob. She suggested Carmelena Cares. After reading about them and hearing about how they’ve helped others, I knew I should pick them. I felt it was very important that whatever modest donations I could raise should have a direct and visible impact. Then came the question of how to accept the donations. Thanks to a suggestion from a friend who has experience with this, I decided on Crowdrise. It’s a third-party site (they have an app too), that accepts donations and ensures that 100% of the funds goes to the specified charity. They accept all major forms of payment, and make promoting the cause and tracking its progress so easy that anyone could use it. We’re clearly in the Trust Tree now, so I’ll continue being completely earnest- I don’t want to run 50 miles, and I’m legitimately afraid of this race. As of this writing, I’m 2 weeks into a 12 week training plan. If the race was tomorrow, I’d give myself about a 40% chance of finishing. Granted, I am my biggest critic and I’ve been told I’m unnecessarily hard on myself. In fact, I have it on good authority (an experienced ultra-runner and friend) that I’ll finish the race. Most of my fear stems from the course. It’s not flat. Worse yet, it’s a 6-mile loop, which means that every 6 miles I’ll return to the aid station to refuel and have to fight the urge to give up. I can only imagine how strong that urge will be after 30 or 40 miles. At some point, I’m certain the allure of calling it quits and saying, “I tried my best,” will contend with the idea of prolonging the pain. If you don’t count snakes, failure is my biggest fear. And giving up in the middle of something that I could finish if I just had the grit and fortitude to gut it out? That frightens me to my core. Add to that the fact that I’ve declared out loud to the world, “I’m going to attempt this race,” and multiply it by the number of people I’ve told and now I’m scared to death. You may think it’s hyperbole, but I’m not exaggerating. So how do I overcome that? I suppose I’ll find out. Of course, the only way to find out is to get out there and live in the pain and see how long I can bear it. The problem was, rather- my problem was, I would never pull the trigger and register for the race. Then, as quickly as doubt sunk in, belief offered a way out- register for the race. It was really that simple. Register, sign up, pay the entry fee, tell a few people about it. The same suggestions I always offer to new runners who want to try a 5k, but are just a little too hesitant to get out there, applied to me as well. It’s weird how that works. So, for better or worse, I took my own advice. Go to the links below for more information about Carmelena Cares and my fundraiser page on Crowdrise. In the meantime, I’m off to figure out how to train for this thing. To donate Go to: www.crowdrise.com/50-for-a-cause/fundraiser/ chadscanlon For more information go to: www.carmelenacares.com

FLAGSHIP STORE DATES BACK TO 1969

Meet the team of Causeway’s flagship store, the Ford and Lincoln showroom! The Ford store is where it all began way back in 1969 when Dave Wintrode purchased the dealership. 48 years later his son David is the General Manager of all five stores in the group. With a hardworking crew made up of vibrant youth and seasoned veterans, it’s no surprise Ford and Lincoln had a very successful 2016. It starts at the top, and the Ford store is led by a team of managers with nearly 100 years of combined experience. That experience and wisdom trickles down throughout the ranks via training, encouragement, accountability, and fostering an atmosphere of family. Whether it’s through product knowledge, customer service, or decades of experience in the car business, each manager uses their strengths to keep us rowing the boat.

WINTER 2017

Our fearless leader and General Sales Manager. We joke that he’s been in the business for 20 years and hasn’t done any work in 19. Corey is also known as the Loan Arranger! He helps customers that have less than perfect credit buy a car when everyone else said no! Nobody does it better! In reality, he’s a family man, avid boater, lives and breathes Big Blue, and strives to keep his staff happy and successful. Corey has been Causeway’s General Sales Manager for two years now, and has made many positive changes to the showrooms and sales staff. He cares about our lives outside of work, and makes sure we have time to spend with our families and friends. Corey is married to his high school sweetheart Renee. They are proud parents to two beautiful girls, Bailey and Madison.

Joe Stroffolino Director of Advertising and Marketing. Joe has been in the industry since 1989, and with the Causeway Family since 1995. He wears many hats. From editing the Causeway Gazette, purchasing preowned cars, or directing a TV commercial, He does much more than his title would dictate. Joe has become one of Causeway’s most versatile experts, just ask him. Joe has been married for 30 years …all to the same women! He’s an avid football fan, traveler, proud father of 3, and accomplished runner. Joe completed 6 5k races last year and a duathalon. He plans to add to that resume this year.

Directions: • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9 inch springform pan. • In a medium bowl, mix graham cracker crumbs with melted butter. Press onto bottom of springform pan. • In a large bowl, mix cream cheese with sugar until smooth. Blend in milk, and then mix in the eggs one at a time, mixing just enough to incorporate. Mix in sour cream, vanilla and flour until smooth. Pour filling into prepared crust. • Bake in preheated oven for 1 hour. Turn the oven off, and let cake cool in oven with the door closed for 5 to 6 hours; this prevents cracking. Chill in refrigerator until serving.

Jennifer Maier

Our resident tech guru and Lincoln Technology Concierge. Jason started with Causeway a little under 10 years ago. He started a young salesman, and has become the lifeline of Causeway. Handling everything from maintaining servers, fixing computers, to assisting with vehicle technology, Jason wears many hats throughout the dealership. Recently married to his lovely wife Brenda, they enjoy traveling and chasing around their Weimaraner, Jack.

With almost 2 years in the business, Jenn has carved her niche as our Lease Retention Manager. Our princess of the showroom has found success due to her warm personality and attention to details. She came from a family who was involved in retail sales, and attributes many of her qualities from years in the customer service business. From the moment customers walk in the door, Jennifer makes them feel like they’re family. Being the lone female in the showroom, she’s the only girl in a boys’ club. And, in what is typically a male-dominated industry, she shines as a diamond in the rough.

Mike Trezza A fixture of Causeway Ford, and a legend in the business. He started selling cars when the Model T rolled off the assembly line. If you need to know about literally anything going on in the showroom, Trezza is the man to ask. You’ll find him manning his desk and keeping tabs on his beloved coworkers.

Skip Martin The Energizer Bunny has stopped, but Skip has kept on going, and going, and going. A proud father and husband, this former teacher started selling cars in Manahawkin in 1972. He joined the Causeway Family in 1992. He has now sold over 1.2 million cars, has generations of loyal customers, and recently won the Level 3 Nationwide Customer Satisfaction Award. He’s a hard worker and staple in the community, volunteering his time with St. Francis Church, Kiwanis, Rotary, and the New York Yankees Fan Club. Skip loves to tell a joke every day, brag about his wife’s cooking, and spend time with his dogs.

Rich Hackett

Resident Custom Car Specialist. Chris will sell you anything from a kidney to a lift kit. He’s more knowledgeable about motors than Henry Ford himself and, with 4 little girls at home, changes diapers faster than a pit crew changes tires.

Rich “Big Dick” Hackett comes to the showroom once or twice a week, and after decades at Causeway, he’s earned the right to his preferred schedule. During his years as a salesman, he was very active in his local community as a Rotarian, and held positions in local government. He proudly served his country in the Marine Corps as well.

Vinny Festa

Sam Califiore

Chris Varner

Senior Sales Manager and captain of the Ford ship. Vinny started in this business in 1990, and has the wisdom to prove it. He has a calm and serene demeanor in a hasty and sometimes turbulent business. Unless you bring him incomplete paperwork, ask a stupid question, or interrupt him, in which case he’ll probably throw a stapler at you.

Rob Libutti Ingredients: • 15 graham crackers, crushed • 2 tablespoons butter, melted • 4 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese • 1 1/2 cups white sugar • 3/4 cup milk • 4 eggs • 1 cup sour cream • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

Jason Halliday

Junior Sales Manager. With almost a decade in the business, Rob has a wide knowledge of all vehicles, especially trucks. To be more specific, owning trucks. After 17 years of having vehicles, he has owned more trucks than the entire state of Texas. With Rob as both a manager and a customer, it’s no coincidence that the F150 is America’s best-selling truck for 40 years. When he’s not working, you’ll find him in the woods hunting, or spending time with his wife and twin children.

Wallace Moore Sophomore Sales Manager. Wallace has the monumental task of keeping the sales staff in line, doing everything from training to making deals, all while being the newest sales manager. He’s a true Renaissance Man: good at every sport he tries, loves Bruce Springsteen, would give Ken Jennings a run for his Jeopardy money, and plays cards better than Amarillo Slim. With a motley crew like this under his tutelage, his versatility is his best asset.

Commercial Truck Manager. If you need to know the towing capacity for an F350 Diesel, or what kind of utility body you should use for your business, Sam is the guy to ask. Known throughout the area as “Sam the Truck Guy,” contractors, masons, builders, landscapers and the like come from all over the state to Sam for all their commercial truck needs.

Kevin Meade He’s been in the car business for over 6 years, but has the product knowledge of a 20 year veteran. From performance cars to hybrids, he can answer all your questions. He is recently engaged despite a rather unorthodox proposal, a devoted Giants fan, metal head, Jeep enthusiast, and a loving father to his 3 year-old daughter.

Antonio Brito We know him as “Tony,” though he’d prefer to be known as “Best Deal Tony.” It’s certainly not a stretch, as his customers only have the best to say about him. He has been here for 2 years now, which makes him a seasoned pro, and what he lacks in size he makes up for in character. Ever the entertainer, the mini drum set on his desk reminds us of his days in a rock and roll band. When he’s not on the phone with his customers, he’s out on the pitch scoring goals or spending time with his 2 sons.

Chad Scanlon If Causeway had a title for the KING OF SARCASM, Chad would definitely win this hands down. But seriously, “Chadley” is so much more than that. From athlete to published author to great salesman, his charismatic personality makes everyone who meets him feel like they have been friends forever. Chad was in the restaurant business prior to joining Causeways Sales Team, and has been a great addition to our staff. He is training for an Ultra Marathon and raising money for a local charity, Carmelena Cares, which helps deserving, disabled children. April 1st, Chad will be attempting his first 50 mile run.

Randy Evans After a full year under his belt, Randy has become one of Ford’s best young salesmen. Luckily for us, Randy missed his calling as the new host of The Match Game. Instead, Randy brings a youthful enthusiasm to the showroom, and by channeling his inner Gene Rayburn, keeps us all laughing daily. His product knowledge is top-notch, and his ability to demonstrate a vehicle’s features and benefits has made him the selfproclaimed “Walk-Around King.”

Herb Wills Born in West Virginia, raised in New Jersey, Herb might be the nicest guy to ever enter the car business. When’s he’s not taking care of his customers, he’s a guitarist in a local band and pumping iron in the gym. He might get a bad rap for his monogrammed lunchbox, love of the Russian ballet, and inability to pronounce “hors d’oeuvres,” but he is a great addition to the Ford team.

Ryan Ehrhart New York native, but we don’t hold that against him. Though he’s been only at Causeway Ford for a few months now, Ryan has been selling cars for 2 years already. His dry sarcasm and professional attitude made him a perfect fit for our team. As if starting at a new company wasn’t exciting enough, Ryan decided to get married a week into the job. When he’s not at work you’ll find him at home fixing whatever his new puppy, Hudson, just chewed up.

Andrew Battaglino The youngest and newest member of our squad, Andrew has a bright future at Causeway and not a worry in the world. Recently engaged, Andrew is tech savvy, eager to learn, and always willing to help. If there was a “Team Player” award, he would win handily. As our local dining consultant, Andrew is the man to ask if you want to know where to go for the best wings, pizza, or fast food.

Terry Collins Proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, husband, and father of 2. Terry has the energy of a teenager, and keeps the entire showroom entertained with his random outbursts into song. When he’s not serving his loyal customers, he’s outside dropping dimes on the basketball court.

game. Freehold Township also held a Manasquan team averaging 65 points in its other six games to 39 in Thursday’s semifinal game. The Patriots’ game plan was not as singularly focused as the one that held Manasquan’s Devin Jensen to 10 points on 3-for-17 shooting on Thursday, but it was varied in its man-zone mix and equally disruptive to the Mariners shooters and any Toms River North player who tried to score near the basket. “Even last year, we started off playing a lot of fullcourt press and it wasn’t working out too well for us, so we had to push it back to half court,” Staklinski said. “This year, you can see we’re all coming together based on last year’s experience playing good halfcourt defense when we need to.” As for the offense, Freehold Township grew more effective over the course of the game and excelled by relying on one hot hand. Staklinski scored 13 of his points in the fourth, including a thunderous twohanded dunk as he was fouled. The three-point play capped a 7-0 burst to open the quarter, giving Freehold Township a 34-26 lead. “Once I saw the outlet pass, I was immediately thinking dunk,” Staklinski said. “I bobbled it a little, but I still went up for it.” The Patriots built their lead as high as 12 at 45-33, which followed a first 24 minutes in which neither team led by more than five points – a 16-11 Freehold Township lead in the second quarter. Senior Ryan Zyskowski added nine points and seven rebounds for Freehold Township. Junior Holden Petrick, meanwhile, led Toms River North with 11 points. Freehold Township extended its unbeaten start to 7-0 amid a difficult stretch for Golub, who has been helping tend to his ill father since the start of practice in November. Golub said his father was a regular at Freehold Township games in years past. With Golub away from the team, assistant Todd Smith ran the team through practice Friday morning and did the heavy lifting installing the gameplan. “Todd deserves this win,” Golub said. “He did all the hard work getting our guys ready to play. I just showed up to the game and yelled at the refs.”

David Lytle

SRHS Male Athlete of the Week David Lytle 11th Grade Ice Hockey David recorded two hat trick performances in the Rams Ice Hockey early games this winter. David opened up the season with a 3 goal performance in their opener vs Lacey Twp which Southern won 10-0. David followed up that opening night performance with another 3 goal game vs St. Rose which the Rams won 5-1. Good Luck the rest of the season.

For three quarters, the WOBM Christmas Classic final was not pretty, and that is exactly how Freehold Township’s defense has made life for its opponents. In Friday’s WOBM Christmas Classic final between the thirdseeded Patriots and topseeded host Toms River North, Freehold Township again took on a highoctane offense and slowed it to a crawl. Senior Steve Staklinski scored a gamehigh 23 points to go with eight rebounds Friday and the No. 3 Patriots separated from the Mariners early in the fourth quarter to win their first ever WOBM Christmas Classic, 4539. “Our coaches kept telling us what a great team they (Toms River North) were and we had to be ready,” Staklinski said. “We just had to do what we do – play (defense). Honestly, it was just a great team game.” The Patriots clamped down on Toms River North’s top offensive threats, holding senior Jaden Rhoden to eight points and senior Mike Nyisztor to six. In total, Toms River North shot 13-for48 (27 percent) and committed 15 turnovers. After scoring eight points before halftime, Rhoden did not score in the second half. The Patriots’ effort Friday capped a superior defensive tournament for Freehold Township, which held all three WOBM opponents under 40 points and to an average of 37.5 per game. Only one Freehold Township opponent this season has crossed the 40-point plateau and it was only 42 points by Neptune in a 6642 Patriots win. “It doesn’t surprise us,” Staklinski said of Freehold Township’s defense so far. “Just in practice, you can see the amount of hard work we put in. Everyone is working together and we always know someone is going to be there on the backside with help. As a team, it’s great to be able to play ‘D’ like we have.” “As good as the results have been, I don’t think we’re a great team right now,” Freehold Township coach Brian Golub said. “I give us an A on the defensive end, but our offense has to find ways to score besides off our defense. But our defense has been awesome. This is one of the only tournaments we’ve been in and haven’t won.” To make Friday’s showing even more impressive, it came against a Toms River North team averaging 68.8 points per game heading into the championship

LINCOLN USES BEAUTY, DRAMA AND AUTHENTICITY

For New Continental Campaign With Matthew Mcconaughey The Lincoln Motor Company traveled to the edge of the Earth to find a backdrop dazzling enough to introduce its timeless, elegant flagship vehicle – the all-new 2017 Lincoln Continental. “Entrance,” a new TV spot for the “That’s Continental” campaign featuring Matthew McConaughey, was shot on a shimmering glacial plain about 160 miles from Reykjavík, Iceland, with black sand and shallow water offset by a stunning, stark horizon. This new ad campaign is incredibly important to Lincoln. “It’s fresh, contemporary and very visual,” says John Emmert, group marketing manager, The Lincoln Motor Company. “While many are familiar with the Continental nameplate, we wanted them to see our all-new flagship in a whole new way,” he continues. “A car as iconic as Continental could only be shot in a unique locale – one not familiar to viewers.” The ads were directed by acclaimed cinematographer Wally Pfister, known for “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Rises.” Pfister’s work on “Inception” landed him an Academy Award in 2011. The Icelandic terrain provides an

unforgettable framework for such an impressive car, says Jon Pearce, global chief creative officer for Hudson Rouge. The conditions were extreme, he recalls, with the crew conducting shoots in raw, unpredictable temperatures and driving rain. But then rainbows would light up the sky. “The clouds would break, the winds would die down, and it would become absolutely beautiful,” says Pearce. “Entrance” is one of several unconventional spots featuring McConaughey, each of which highlights a distinct quality of the Lincoln Continental. This piece showcases a dramatic, sweeping view of the front of the flagship vehicle. Some segments of “That’s Continental” were shot in Los Angeles. “Crafted,” another piece in the campaign, offers a wry take on nontraditional storytelling. And for the first time in a Lincoln ad, McConaughey is featured in the back seat to showcase some of the rear seat amenities available for Continental, including a chauffeur switch. The feature allows a passenger in the rear to move the front passenger seat forward for extra legroom. -www.media.lincoln.com

Causeway Family Customer Appreciation Event Winners Announced

Manahawkin- Last month just in time for the Holidays, the Causeway Family of Dealerships held a Customer Appreciation Event. It was an invitation only event for all previous sales and service customers. It was truly a success on so many levels. Many of our customers took advantage the spectacular year end deals on our new Fords, Lincolns, Hondas, Nissans and Hyundais. Business owners and contractors made year end purchases to take advantage of major tax advantages on heavy duty commercial trucks. Others, in the spirit of the season, donated food to our Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties holiday food drive. Some customers dropped off new unwrapped toys for the Stafford PBA toy drive. Then there were the prize winners! The Grand prize 6 day Eastern Caribbean Carnival Cruise was won by Shaan Hetmans-Vanderzwet and Wayne Heimbach. When their salesperson Joe Hughes called Wayne and told him the amazing news, Wayne said “is this a crank call?” Joe told him no of course not. Wayne said you tell my wife that again. Shaan said “I can’t’ believe it!! I have never won anything my whole life!”

WINS “NORTH AMERICAN TRUCK OF THE YEAR” AWARD

The completely redesigned and reengineered 2017 Honda Ridgeline has been named the 2017 North American Truck of the Year (NATOTY) northamericancaroftheyear.org. Launched in June 2016, the 2017 Ridgeline includes a host of industry-exclusive standard and available features including unibody construction, a Dual Action Tailgate, In-Bed Trunk®, a scratch- and dentresistant composite truck bed and the world’s first Truck Bed Audio System. The 2017 Ridgeline is also the first and only pickup to earn a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, when equipped with available front crash prevention system and LED headlights. It is the second consecutive year for Honda to earn a top honor, with the Honda Civic winning North American Car of the Year honors in 2016. Moreover, this marks Ridgeline’s second NACTOY award, the first coming in 2006, when the Honda Civic also won the 2006 North American Car of the Year. “This award is a prized validation of the innovations and advantages the Ridgeline offers

midsize pickup truck customers and a great recognition of the American development team’s work,” said John Mendel, Executive Vice President of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “This is a terrific way to kick off 2017, and we’re looking forward to sharing more innovative Honda products in the year ahead.” The North American Truck of the Year Award is given by a group of over 50 members of the North American automotive media and is distinctive because it is not tied to a single publication, radio or television station but determined by an independent group of journalists from the United States and Canada. Presented each year at the opening of the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, NACTOY recognizes the most outstanding vehicle of the year based on multiple factors including innovation, design, safety performance, handling, driver satisfaction and value. The Ridgeline is a part of Honda’s expanded lineup of innovative light-truck models, including the HR-V crossover, the CR-V and Pilot SUVs and the new 2018 Odyssey minivan that will be revealed later today at NAIAS. Honda light truck sales hit an all-time high of 661,188 units in 2016, up 7 percent over the previous year. -www.hondanews.com

HYUNDAI MOTOR REVEALS

Future Vision For Connected Cars Hyundai Motor has unveiled its plans for advanced connected car technology at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The interactive experience featured at the Hyundai Motor booth demonstrates how the ‘hyper-connected car’ will be central to buying greater convenience, comfort and enjoyment to tomorrow’s lifestyles. With an objective to create hyper-connected intelligent cars that boast the safest and most advanced self-driving systems on the market, Hyundai Motor is collaborating with Cisco, a worldwide leader in IT and security technology. The joint program will create a platform optimized for connected cars, which will help enable two-way communication both internally between the car’s system and externally with road infrastructure, other vehicles, internet of Things (loT) devices, and the cloud. ”At this year’s CES, Hyundai Motor will introduce the direction of development with Cisco and we hope that visitors fully understand what Hyundai Motor and Cisco envision for the future of connected cars,” said Seung Ho Hwang, Executive Vice President of Hyundai Motor Company. “We are convinced that further synergies will be created as we combine Hyundai Motor’s connected car platforms with Cisco’s network technology”, he added. “When you think about how much time we spend in our cars, it’s exciting to consider what can happen when your car truly becomes intelligent,”

said James Peters, VP, Automotive and Connected Car Business Unit, Cisco. “It takes sophisticated networking and integration down to the sensor - and security across the network level to make a hyper-connected car. By combining Hyundai’s leadership in automotive technology with Cisco’s strength in networking and security, we are accelerating the pace of innovation in this exciting space.” At CES Hyundai Motor presents four key connected car scenarios that will define the experience for its customers: Fully Autonomous Driving – guarantees the highest levels of driving safety by monitoring traffic conditions, infrastructure information and data from other vehicles Smart Traffic – delivers convenience through optimized route guidance based on real-time traffic information, which can reduce congestion and minimize associated social costs that delays can bring Intelligent Remote Service – monitors the car’s condition to identify and resolve issues remotely ‘Mobility Hub’ – is the heart of the connected car, which provides assistance and infinite amounts of

knowledge to connect customers with every aspect of their daily lives The connected car platform will evolve to link cars to everything, including homes, offices and even city infrastructure. Through its work with Cisco, Hyundai Motor will aim to have its connected car infrastructure adapt to new innovations in safety, comfort and convenience while encompassing advanced security technologies to aim to reduce hacking vehicle operating systems. The Hyundai Motor booth at CES presents an interactive experience for visitors by demonstrating all the elements of its future vision for the connected car. A working connected car concept and an immersive virtual reality autonomous driving simulation will demonstrate how Hyundai Motor’s connected platform operates, alongside a suite of interactive demonstrations that showcase its vision for future mobility. -www.hyundainews.com

8 SIMPLE WINTER CAR CARE TIPS

For many drivers, that also means the challenges of winter car ownership are just around the corner, too, like salted streets, icy roads, freezing temperatures and heavy snow. How can you make sure your car is well cared for during the difficult winter months? We’ve listed eight simple car care tips that can go a long way toward making sure your car stays in great shape all winter long. Lighting One major hazard with winter driving is that the sun sets earlier in the day, which means there’s less daylight, especially on your commute home. As a result, you’ll want to do everything you possibly can to make sure all of your vehicle’s lights are in excellent shape, providing the brightest possible illumination they can. If a bulb is out, fix it before winter starts, and if there’s snow covering any exterior light, make sure you remove it before setting off to drive anywhere. If your headlights are foggy or yellow, consider replacing them or look into an easy restoration kit. Battery It’s often more difficult for a battery to operate in cold weather than it is for a battery to operate in warm weather. As a result, a battery that’s merely weak during the summer could turn into a dead battery during the

winter. Our advice is to have a volt test performed on your battery before winter starts to make sure it’s still in good working order. If it isn’t, buy a new battery as soon as possible so you’ll never have to worry about being stranded or left in a cold parking lot with a car that won’t start. Coolant Coolant, also known as antifreeze, is tremendously important to your car, as it keeps the engine from freezing in cold temperatures. Before you head into winter, make sure your car isn’t low on coolant and that there aren’t any leaks in your vehicle’s engine that could cause coolant to drain out. Many mechanics recommend drivers use a 50/50-mix of coolant and water in their radiators, which usually results in a lower engine freezing point than just coolant. Gasoline and Washer Fluid You might be wondering what gasoline and washer fluid could possibly have in common. The answer is that they’re two automotive items you should try to keep full during the winter. You should try to keep your gas tank full for several reasons, like the fact that a full tank may prevent accumulated water from freezing inside your fuel pump and can help you stay warm by allowing the engine to stay running in case you get stuck. Meanwhile, a full windshield-washer reservoir is tremendously important, as messy road debris from a snowstorm can sometimes necessitate constant window washing to see where you’re going. Tires “All-wheel drive is confidence-inspiring when you’re accelerating, but it doesn’t help you when you’re braking and turning,” says Woody Rogers, director of product information for Tire Rack. “Winter tires are a must in areas where the temperature regularly drops below 45 degrees,” Rogers adds, noting that winter tires are more capable of staying flexible at low temperatures. This means that they can provide improved traction when you’re trying to stop and turn on cold pavement, even if there’s no snow on the ground. Tire Pressure

It’s incredibly important to keep track of your tire pressure as temperatures get colder. This is because tire pressure can drop along with the air temperature, losing up to one pound per square inch with every 10-degree drop in air temperature. Driving around with low tire pressure could mean premature tire wear or potential tread separation, which could lead to a major accident. Also, your car handles less predictably with underinflated tires. If you check your tire pressure and find that one or more of your tires are low on air, fill them at a gas station air pump and don’t forget to let out a little air as temperatures start to climb again in the spring. Defroster and Climate Control Before winter gets into full swing, be sure to check your car’s window defroster and its climate control system to make sure both items are still working properly. Their purpose is obvious: The climate control system will help keep you warm in the winter (and can help keep your windows from fogging up), while the defroster will keep your windows from icing up. Both items are crucial to maintaining comfort and safety throughout the winter. Survival Kit Although this isn’t a car care tip as much as a winter preparedness tip, we suggest considering a survival kit for your vehicle if you want to really maximize your vehicle’s readiness for winter. While it might sound ridiculous for some urban drivers, motorists in rural areas might find themselves stuck on a deserted road with heavy snow falling and few vehicles around for miles. If there’s even some possibility you’ll end up on a road like this during the winter, a survival kit is a good idea. Select one that’s stocked with a blanket, a first-aid kit, a knife, a flashlight, jumper cables and a cellphone charger that works in your vehicle’s cigarette lighter. We also suggest keeping a shovel in your vehicle’s trunk and some sort of de-icer spray handy, so you can easily access the engine or trunk in case they’re frozen shut.
