Counties) confirm these facts.

What do you want for Christmas? Or Hanukkah? Or Kwanzaa? Whichever December holiday you observe, everyone has a list of items they would love to receive. For many this is a season of excess. For many more it is a season of need. In Ocean County, the official poverty level in 2006, the first year of the study, was at 8.8 percent. It held steady until it jumped from 7.9 percent in 2009 to 11.2 percent in 2010. The poverty rate dipped slightly to 10.2 percent in 2013, before inching up to a high of 12 percent in 2014. The federal poverty level for a family of four is $23,800. However, Legal Services of New Jersey, the group that conducted the study, factors cost of living, which is high in N.J., into its equation, and it sets the figure for a family of four anywhere from $64,238 to $73,371, the report said.

• One in every 10 people in Monmouth and Ocean Counties receive “emergency” food from the Fulfill’s network of pantries, soup kitchens and other agencies.4

When you see these numbers it’s quite sobering. New Jersey in general is an expensive place to live. Families in these lower income ranges are less concerned about buying holiday gifts and more concerned about putting food on the table. Hunger among these families is a real ongoing issue in Monmouth and Ocean counties. These statistics from the Fulfill (Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean

• The gap between the rich and the poor continues to increase. While personal income increased among the wealthy, so did poverty among the poorer segments of the population, rising from 5.3% to 6.8% in Monmouth County and from 6.7 to 11% in Ocean County in the period 20002010.2 • Poverty rates among children increased significantly in the last decade: from 6.8% to 8.7% in Monmouth County and from 10.4% to 19.2% in Ocean County.2 • The FoodBank served 51,000 children with emergency food in 2010, compared with “only” almost 19,000 in 2005.4 • Of all households receiving emergency food in Monmouth and Ocean Counties, almost half (45%) of households with children experienced hunger during the course of the year. In the face of such staggering disparity what can the average person do to stem the tide? Well Continued on page 9

The holiday season means different things to different people and for yours truly it’s often dominated by the sounds of bouncing basketballs. You see I had this brilliant idea a long time ago to host this “little” basketball tournament that involved eight teams and was played over three days at Ocean County College. That was how the WOBM Christmas Classic began in 1984 and even I did not envision that it would grow into the largest high school tournament in the state. The 34th annual edition of what’s become a holiday tradition features 32 teams (16 boys and 16 girls) who will play 52 games over six days at what is best known as the Pine Belt Arena on the campus of Toms River High North. We have made a major change to the schedule for this year’s tournament in terms of the starting date. In past years we would have played opening round games on the weekend of December 16-17 but that would mean teams would play a WOBM Christmas Classic tournament game and then likely two regular-season games the following week before the holiday break. That reminded me of what happens with high school football in which some teams play a playoff game, regularseason game on Thanksgiving and then a state final the following week. It just didn’t set well with me as I wanted the Christmas Classic to run in a tighter window.

With that said if you like high school basketball then mark Saturday, December 23rd on your calendar because on that day we will play all 16 first-round games in the two gyms that make up the arena. We’ll start with the eight boys games at 10am and go right through the evening. It will be like a hoops marathon. The tournament will then resume on Tuesday, December 26 and like in the past run right through the finals on Saturday, December 30. This Sunday night the 32 head coaches will gather at The Villa banquet facility across from The Office Lounge & Restaurant in Toms River to seed the teams and we will announce the pairings and brackets early next week.

WINTER 2017

Why You Should Buy a Car, a Truck or Equipment Before the End of the Year Before you make the purchase, make sure that your new car, truck or equipment is considered a tax write-off. This article is part of the End of Year Tax Tips Series from tax and legal expert Mark J. Kohler.

the vehicle. You will now need to track your fuel, repairs, maintenance, insurance and tires, as well as “depreciate” the vehicle or a portion of the lease payment if leasing.

It’s not uncommon for business owners to make big purchases before year-end to get the tax write-off. This couldn’t be truer when it comes to buying a car, truck, RV or van for your business. However, making that big purchase isn’t always the best long-term tax decision, not to mention the wisest economic decision. Both are critical issues that I will explore below.

At first glance, business owners often think that the actual method is a big write-off because they see all of these expenses going out the door with the car payment; however, the car payment amount is irrelevant in the analysis. Thus, you have to bank on the depreciation deduction to make this strategy really pay off, which is drastically limited with cars but can pay off big time with trucks, SUVs, vans and RVs (see below).

Essentially, there are two main options to write off auto expenses: mileage or actual. The mileage method is quite obvious, but the definition of “actual expenses” can get a little complicated. In fact, the actual method can encompass leasing a vehicle, as well fuel, insurance, repairs, maintenance and even depreciation. But before we get into the strategy of strolling into the auto dealership on Dec. 31 to buy that new car or truck, let’s get down the basics.

Also, keep in mind that when you choose to use the actual method, you’re now stuck with his procedure and you can’t use the mileage method again with that car -- there is no

2017 Ford Super Duty

going back!

The mileage method On any of your vehicles, you can use mileage as an excellent method to expense the business use of your vehicle. In 2016, potential mileage deductions are as follows:

Finally, from a bookkeeping standpoint, it’s important to pay for all of the expenses I described above from your business account so that you don’t miss any of them come tax time. Don’t co-mingle the payment of these auto expenses with your personal account. It can be a nightmare to try and dissect.

• Business: $0.54/mile

The pros and cons of depreciation

• Charity: $0.14/mile

• Medical and moving: $0.19/mile

• Personal or commuting: No deduction

Again, the problem with the actual method is that the depreciation expense can be tricky to understand and calculate. It will vary dramatically based on the type of vehicle, and the business use percentage still plays a big factor.

Ninety percent of my tax clients use mileage because it’s simple, easy and a large deduction. For instance, keep in mind that a car payment is not a deduction. When you compare mileage to “actual,” it’s important to understand what is “actually” deductible if you use the actual method.

Actual expenses The second method in deducting automobile expenses is to write off actual expenses for

For example, depreciation is drastically limited for cars, and even if you buy a big truck, you have to still track mileage to show the percentage you use the vehicle for business. However, it starts to get better and better when the vehicle weighs more than 6,000 pounds. But keep in mind there are different rules for SUVs and the type of truck you may drive. The exciting part is that this depreciation deduction really opens up for large trucks, vans and RVs in certain instances. SUV or truck with a bed that’s less than six feet. Both of these types of vehicles are treated the same for tax purposes. Yes, Congress and the IRS feel that many of these trucks with shorter truck beds are more like SUVs than trucks, thus they fall into the same tax category. Now, the allowable depreciation for these types of vehicles, on top of actual expenses described above, is that you can take up to $25,000 as a deduction right off the purchase price, whether the truck or SUV is new or used. You also get to take the standard annual depreciation deduction of around $3,000 in the year of purchase. This little $25,000 writeoff is often a perfect fit for a business owner looking for one of these types of vehicles, and it can exceed the mileage deduction in the first few years you own the vehicle.

171

ECONOMIC TIP: From a dollars and cents standpoint, this strategy really pays off if you indeed want and need one of these types of vehicles -- and you don’t plan on putting a ton of miles on it or trading in the vehicle in three to four years. But for those of you planning to put on a ton of miles or keep the vehicle longer than the average American, the mileage method will give you more bang for your buck in the long run.

Again, keep in mind the business use percentage of the depreciation and all of the actual expenses (fuel, repairs, maintenance, etc.). For example, say you have $20,000 in annual expenses and depreciation, and 80 percent of your use of the vehicle is for business. Thus, you are allowed a $16,000 deduction. Moreover, keep in mind that you have show net income in your business. The extra depreciation can’t put you into a “loss” to deduct against other income.

Large trucks and vans. If the truck or van weighs more than 6,000 pounds and the truck has a six-foot bed (or greater) or is an enclosed 2017 Ford Transit Box Truck delivery truck, then the $25,000 SUV limitation does not apply. In fact, you can deduct up to $500,000 for the cost of the vehicle in the year of purchase (limited to the business use percentage described previously).

Because of the higher cost of these vehicles, it’s much more likely the actual method will far exceed the mileage method in the long run. This is also because the operational costs, such as gas and repairs, can be higher with these more expensive types of vehicles. Though again, keep in mind that these large depreciation deductions in the first year are limited to your net income. Therefore, a more profitable or seasoned business is going to get a better write-off than a company in startup mode that is not showing a profit yet.

KING OF WORK: 2018 FORD SUPER DUTY IS AMERICA’S MOST POWERFUL, MOST CAPABLE HEAVY-DUTY PICKUP TRUCK EVER

SPORTS BEAT Girls Soccer

DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 5, 2017 – Ford, America’s truck leader for 40 straight years, delivers for customers once again for 2018, creating America’s most powerful and capable heavy-duty pickup trucks ever – thanks to best-inclass horsepower and torque from a newly upgraded 6.7-liter Power Stroke® diesel engine. “Super Duty customers expect the best, and for 2018 we’re giving our customers even more power and torque from our 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel – delivering the most horsepower and torque available among all heavy-duty pickups,” said Todd Eckert, Ford truck group marketing manager. “Plus, our new F-450 pickup now includes a 4X2 model, enabling our customers to get more done with the segment’s best payload and towing.” The 2018 Super Duty continues to deliver Built Ford Tough durability, capability, and functionality while now owning five key best-in-class heavy-duty truck segment claims: • Best-in-class 450 horsepower (a 10 horsepower improvement over 2017) • Best-in-class 935 lb.-ft. of torque (a 10 lb.-ft. improvement over 2017) • Best-in-class 34,000 pounds of gooseneck towing, when properly equipped (a 1,500-pound improvement for the new F-450 4x2 model) • Best-in-class 21,000-pound conventional hitch towing • Best-in-class 7,630-pound payload capacity Upgrades to the 2018 Ford 6.7-liter Power Stroke engine include redesigned cylinder heads for added strength under higher loads, plus optimized fuel and turbo boost calibrations to take advantage of the increased cylinder head capacity for increased horsepower and torque.

Ford is the only heavy-duty truck manufacturer that designs and builds its own diesel engine and transmission combination – ensuring the powertrain works seamlessly with all chassis components and vehicle calibrations. This approach enables Ford engineers to optimize vehicle performance across the entire lineup and to further refine the powertrain to the specific needs of the customer.

The idea is the brainchild of Christian Mygh and Jonathan Kamstrup, who together scour salvage yards around the world for models, each of which can be transformed into hundreds of unique timepieces, costing from $1,495. For the true Mustang enthusiast, REC Watches, based in Denmark, will even create an entirely new watch from parts donated by customers, including World Champion Drifter and professional fun-haver Vaughn Gittin Jr., who wears a watch that includes carbon fibre bodywork from his 700‑horsepower World Drift Series Ford Mustang RTR. “Most people would just see a pile of metal, a ghost of a Mustang. We see something completely different – the soul of a car and a story that needs to be told,” said cofounder Mygh. “I’m not cutting up Mustangs. I’m bringing Mustangs that are beyond repair back to life as a watch.”

34,000 Pounds of Towing Force For those who rely on their pickups to haul big trailers to get the job done, the new F-450 Super Duty 4x2 dual-rear-wheel truck is now available for both retail and fleet customers – offering greater strength, efficiency and durability. Leveraging the benefits of a high-strength steel box frame, integrated gooseneck hitch mounts, and added load capacity thanks to Ford’s proprietary high-strength, military-grade, aluminum-alloy body, the 2018 F-450 4x2 tows even more with its lighter, more efficient driveline. The result is the most capable, robust and efficient Super Duty tow machine ever, delivering a best-in-class 34,000 pounds of gooseneck towing capacity. The 2018 Super Duty F-450 4x2 dual-rear-wheel pickup will be available this winter in XL, XLT, Lariat and Platinum series offerings. Base MSRP is $52,830, which includes $1,295 destination and delivery charges. www.media.ford.com

SECOND-HAND CAR? MUSTANGS DESTINED FOR SCRAPHEAP GET NEW LIFE AS HIGH END WATCHES COLOGNE, GERMANY - It could be the ultimate Christmas present for the petrol head in your life – a handmade watch, lovingly crafted from components that in a previous existence were used in classic Ford Mustangs.

Congratulations Southern Regional Girls Soccer on defeating Central Regional 3-1 on Senior Night, Wednesday, October 18th. Thank you Seniors for all you have done for Southern! Good Luck the rest of the season. #RamPride

To ensure these stories continue to be told, REC Watches painstakingly trace the history of each vehicle; talking to previous owners, collecting stories and images from the car’s past lives, and incorporating them into a bespoke video. Each finished design incorporates the vehicle identification number, year of production and classic Mustang design cues. A power dial designed to look like a fuel gauge shows remaining battery life, and the hands, date, and dial numbers are all influenced by the iconic car’s dashboard. On one trip to Sweden, the team struck gold with a rare 1966 Raven Black model that has become the basis for their limited edition P51-04 collection of 250 watches. Named after a World War II fighter plane and launched in 1964, Mustang’s radical styling and aggressive performance made it an instant classic. Its superstar status was cemented by a starring role in the 1968 action movie “Bullitt” with Steve McQueen, as well as a string of songs and films focused on, or incorporating the groundbreaking car. The modern-day Ford Mustang keeps the excitement alive with exhilarating highperformance from the 450 PS 5.0-litre V8 engine and the 290 PS 2.3-litre EcoBoost unit. www.media.ford.com

Nissan unveils seven ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’-inspired show vehicles at 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show 2018 Nissan Maxima – Kylo Ren

LOS ANGELES – Today, Nissan unveiled seven Star Wars-themed concept vehicles at the Los Angeles Auto Show in celebration of the brand›s ongoing collaboration with Lucasfilm for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The show vehicles are a dynamic display to highlight Nissan›s dramatic designs and the famous characters and crafts from the upcoming film, debuting in theaters Dec. 15. We’re back this year collaborating with Lucasfilm and the artists at Industrial Light & Magic to create these amazing concept vehicles across some of our best-selling models,» said Jeremy Tucker, vice president, Marketing Communications & Media, Nissan North America, Inc. These show vehicles were created for our fans, and will be unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show and shared across the country in regional auto shows over the next several months. Beginning with the expressive lines of some of Nissan›s most popular models – Rogue, Rogue Sport, Altima, Maxima, and TITAN – Star Wars: The Last Jedi themes for each vehicle were developed from artists inside the hallowed offices of Lucasfilm, whose team penned the designs, guiding colors, textures and graphics pairing the vehicles with a craft or character from the film Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Each concept – not available for purchase – receives a unique approach, including extras such as hydro-dipped graphics, surround sound and aged exterior design to show simulated use in battle. With designs complete, the legendary Hollywood vehicle fabricators at Vehicle Effects in Burbank, California, brought the sketches to life.

Drawing on the existing aggressive design language of the Maxima, this show vehicle is transformed into a truly sinister sedan. Designers merged Kylo Ren’s unmistakable black and silver facemask with the Maxima’s V-motion design language using a single block of milled aluminum for the front of the 4-Door Sports Car. A custom front lower spoiler, impactful hood and body are coated to exacting character color-matching specifications. The project is completed with a set of red signature headlights and underbody lighting that pulse at random – similar to Kylo Ren’s crossguard lightsaber.

a full-size BB-8 astromech droid with functioning lights, motion and sound. A rugged tire and wheel package draws parallels to the rugged valor of the Resistance.

2018 Nissan Maxima – Kylo Ren’s TIE Silencer Engineered for speed and astute handling capability, the Nissan Maxima is the perfect car to replicate Kylo Ren’s TIE Silencer – one of the new crafts to appear in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. This one-off TIE Silencer is customized to Kylo’s specifications with laser cannons and missile launchers affixed to the vehicle’s distinct wings – stretching the entire length of the car. Crimson lighting in the grille and underneath give this concept an amazing true-to-life feel. Sound effects pulled directly from the movie take this one to the next level, truly blurring the lines between fantasy and reality.

2018 Nissan Rogue Sport – A-wing Quick and nimble, the A-wing is a perfect fit for the Rogue Sport it is built upon. Dual thrusters at the rear of the vehicle are illuminated, while top-mounted fins mimic the A-wing’s design. Its wheels are painted blue to match the craft’s accents with new tires fitted to provide a wide stance. Laser cannons flank the vehicle and a detailed wrap complete with battle damage prove it’s a vehicle ready for almost anything.

2018 Nissan Altima – Special Forces TIE Fighter The Special Forces TIE Fighter is a strike fighter used by the First Order’s elite Special Forces pilots. This is fittingly recreated using Nissan’s best-selling sedan, Altima. The show vehicle features custom body enhancements, bringing it in line with a member of the First Order’s fleet. The vehicle’s stand out feature is the cockpit window that brings the multi-paned look of the Special Forces TIE fighter to the Altima’s windshield. Custom wheels and full-body wrap bring the dualwinged spacecraft to life. Speakers at each corner recreate the iconic TIE Fighter and blaster sounds, creating a true sense of motion. Each wheel features the centerpiece of a TIE Fighter wing applied through a hydro-dipping process.

2018 Nissan Maxima – Captain Phasma

2018 Nissan TITAN AT-M6 Also joining the First Order ranks, the Captain Considering the AT-M6 is the largest vehicle in the Phasma Maxima is covered in high-gloss silver armor and First Order’s arsenal for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Nissan bears an unmistakable mask of the strong female character fittingly created its show car replica with a Nissan TITAN in the film. Its fascia and hood are each hand-crafted from aluminum. A red accent line runs the length of the car, – coincidentally, the biggest vehicle in Nissan’s fleet with with ground effects to further its intimidating look. The the highest standard horsepower in its segment. It also Captain Phasma Maxima is also a celebration of female happens to be the biggest unveiling (in physical size) strength. Nissan’s Maxima team is led by a female engineer, at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show. The show truck the designer for this vehicle was a female from ILM, the features a massive megacaliber cannon affixed to its vehicle’s brand director is a female and the vehicle was back and a custom body wrap reminiscent of the film’s created to celebrate one of the toughest female warriors in massive First Order walker. Wheels receive hydro-dip graphics to mimic a walker’s leg joints, while a 1-foot the galaxy. lift kit is applied to promote its destructive appearance. 2018 Nissan Rogue – Poe Dameron’s X-wing with BB-8 Designers insisted on installing a sound system capable Poe Dameron’s X-wing leads the New Republic of mimicking the walker’s ground-stomping movements, starfleet, with massive fixed wings spanning either side of effectively bringing the vehicle to life. An 18-inch bedits Nissan Rogue foundation. Ready for action, the T-70 mounted subwoofer with a companion surround sound X-wing starfighter features a pair of illuminating thrusters, system will produce a planet-thumping 5,000 watts, set while quad laser cannons integrated into each wingtip to closely capture the reverberation of a First Order make the craft ready for battle. 2018 Nissan Kicks compact utility vehicle makes North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show LOS ANGELES – The all-new 2018 Nissan Kicks, the newest entry in the fastgrowing affordable compact crossover market, made its North American debut today at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The bold new Kicks becomes the sixth member of the Nissan crossover and SUV lineup – which has experienced record sales in recent years – when it hits Nissan U.S. dealerships in June 2018. “As the gateway to Nissan’s adventureready sport-utility portfolio – joining Rogue Sport, Rogue, Murano, Pathfinder and Armada – Kicks is designed to fit the needs of singles or couples looking for expressive styling, personal technology, smart functionality and advanced safety features at an affordable price starting well under $19,000,” said Dan Mohnke, senior vice president, Sales & Marketing and Operations, Nissan Division U.S., Nissan North America, Inc. Mohnke unveiled the new Kicks during a media event at the show. The new 2018 Kicks combines emotion and practicality by blending bold wheel arch fenders and a high crossover stance with familiar Nissan design signatures, including a V-Motion grille, boomerang headlights and taillights, and a floating roof with a “wrap-around visor” look. Available exterior features include standard Intelligent Auto Headlights (I-AH) and available LED low beam headlights with LED signature accents.

Among the other on-board technology, Kicks features an available Intelligent Around View® Monitor (I-AVM). Every 2018 Kicks comes with a standard 1.6-liter DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder with Continuous Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS). The engine is rated at 125 horsepower and 115 lb-ft of torque. Aided by a smooth and efficient Xtronic transmission, the Kicks is expected to have a fuel economy rating 33 mpg combined. Kicks is offered in front-wheel drive only. “With good ground clearance, a high eye point, electric power steering and small turning radius, Kicks is a great companion to navigate the city with,” added Mohnke.

The 2018 Kicks will be offered in a range of seven exterior colors – plus five two-tone combinations. Three of the two-tone color schemes utilize a black roof and contrasting body colors (white, orange or red). Also available: an orange roof with a gray body, or a white roof with a blue body.

Safety, security and driver convenience features are strong points for the Nissan Kicks. Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) is standard on all grade levels, along with seven air bags and RearView Monitor. Kicks SV and Kicks SR add Blind Spot Warning (BSW) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

“From a pure visual standpoint on the street, Kicks is a true head turner, especially in the bold two-tone color combinations,” said Mohnke. “Kicks is clearly recognizable as part of the Nissan CUV family, but has a vibrancy and identity all its own.”

The 2018 Nissan Kicks will be offered in three wellequipped models – Kicks S, Kicks SV and Kicks SR.

Inside, the Kicks story is one of quality and futuristic design in a cabin full of the innovative features expected by its tech-hungry target audience. The interior promises ample passenger space in the rear – despite the coupe-like roofline – as well as one of the largest load areas in its class. Kicks’ simple “Gliding Wing” dashboard design is dominated by a centrally mounted 7.0-inch full color display housing a comprehensive infotainment system with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ smartphone connectivity. For the ultimate audio experience, the Kicks SR Premium Package includes the new class-exclusive2 Bose® Personal® Plus sound system with a pair of lightweight 2.5-inch Bose®UltraNearfield™ neodymium speakers located inside the Kicks’ driver’s seat headrest.

“Pricing for the 2018 Nissan Kicks will be announced closer to its on-sale date in spring 2018, but we are expecting to be among the most competitive in the segment,” said Mohnke. “Kicks’ unique combination of expressive design, excellent fuel economy, intelligent technology and advanced safety features adds up to one thing – exceptional value.” Along with the new 2018 Kicks, the Nissan display at the Los Angeles show features the all-new 2018 Nissan LEAF electric vehicle, along with seven Star Warsthemed concept vehicles created in celebration of the brand’s ongoing collaboration with Lucasfilm for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show takes place from Friday, Dec. 1 through Sunday, Dec. 10 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT KEVIN MEADE

After 40 long years of breaking hearts and charming ladies, our very own Kevin Meade is officially a married man. Many of us thought the day would never come. Bets were placed, odds were given, and a lot of money was lost. Too many girls had come and gone that just weren’t good enough. Whether they were close-talkers, low-talkers, or ate their peas one at a time, Kevin’s standards just couldn’t be met. All of that changed three years ago when mutual friends introduced him to his future bride- Heather. On a brisk, fall night at the Old Manahawkin Baptist Church they tied the knot after a one-year engagement. The quaint setting and intimate ceremony, punctuated by a bagpiper clad in classic Highland Dress, couldn’t epitomize their relationship any bettera mixture of unique and traditional, but full of love. Kevin and Heather opted for a brief honeymoon at Niagara Falls, with a longer vacation set for next year. They dined and took in the sights; Kevin even survived the infamous barrel challenge. “It wasn’t that bad,” he said. “Hopefully the marriage isn’t as rough.”

DEARBORN, Mich., December 7, 2017 – Good ratings in all five crashworthiness tests as well as a good rating for LED headlights help the all-new 2018 Lincoln Continental qualify for a coveted TOP SAFETY PICK+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The Continental’s front crash prevention system earns a superior rating. When equipped with the system, the car avoided collisions in IIHS track tests at 12 mph and 25 mph. The system also has a forward collision warning component that meets National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) criteria. In addition, the Continental’s LED projector headlights earn a good rating, providing ample lighting on a straightaway and most kinds of curves. They can be obtained with high-beam assist, a feature that automatically switches between high beams and low beams, depending on the presence of other vehicles. “We are honored that Lincoln Continental accolades have been steady from the time we introduced it as a concept car through present day on the road,” said Scott Tobin, Director of Lincoln Product Development. “Lincoln’s philosophy has always been to understand the ideal customer experience and then bring it to life in all

Lincoln adds the luxury segment’s only standard Pickup and Delivery Service across all 2017 nameplates starting with the all-new Lincoln Continental. The exclusive standard service builds on the brand’s commitment to providing a human, warm and personal experience at all Lincoln dealerships. phases of shopping, buying, and full ownership. Safety is always a priority for Lincoln and we are pleased to receive this rating from IIHS.” Vehicles qualify for a TOP SAFETY PICK+ award if they

have good ratings from IIHS in five crashworthiness tests — small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints — and an available front crash prevention system that earns a superior or advanced rating and good or acceptable headlights.

BY CLEMENT CLARKE MOORE ‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds; While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap, When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow, Gave a lustre of midday to objects below, When what to my wondering eyes did appear, But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny rein-deer, With a little old driver so lively and quick, I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name: “Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!” As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky; So up to the housetop the coursers they flew With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too— And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack. His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose; He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight— “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

The 2018 Hyundai Elantra – Tech Review By Jay Halliday, Causeway Family Tech Guru There are opinions for everything in life, cars, music, technology, etc. This doesn’t stop for “in-car” technology and features. For the longest time, I always wanted everything in a vehicle and was disappointed when it didn’t have what I was obsessing over. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’m starting to not like the tech stuff being crammed into vehicles these days. Have we gotten to the saturation point? Should we go back to plain radios? I am willing to say no to both of those questions! What if you could have all the important tech stuff but not feel overwhelmed. This is where the 2018 Hyundai Elantra comes in! The Hyundai Elantra I am talking about is the 2018 “Value Edition”. This is the middle trim level that has the perfect balance of price and value (hence the name). Right off the bat, you get the 7-inch display with standard AM/ FM/Sirius XM (no cd player). You also get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard as well. So without needing factory Nav, you can just plug-in your phone (Galaxy S8 is my test phone) and use Google Maps or WAYS right through the system (with very little effort). You can also pull up many other apps that will run on the system. In the early days you were severely limited to what apps can run on either system, but now with more and more apps being accepted, there are more than enough. I like the fact that I can text my voice by just saying “Hey Google” and I can text my wife without worrying about getting a $400 ticket! If you are the 2% wondering if your Windows Phone is compatible… it’s not. I like listening to Pandora so now when I am leaving work I can continue listening where I left off. Hyundai has nicely laid out OS which feels very comfortable. Instead of being all cluttered, you have an “all menu’s” section that hides a good size list of everything on the system. There is an area for your current channel and map (if you have nav). The system

overall is very responsive and easy to use for the driver or passenger. The rest of the car has very nice features like standard “Blind Spot Detection” with rear cross traffic alert and Lane Change Assist. If you are driving and someone pulls in your blind spot on either side, an amber light will turn on in the corresponding mirror. The Elantra comes with “Lane Change Assist” which keeps track of the cars in the lanes behind you. When you put the blinker on to change lanes, it will beep a warning that another car is approaching, warning you not to change lanes. You could actually call this the “Anti-Cutoff Alert”. The car comes equipped with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert for backing up. It checks for any vehicles or people and beeps to let you know someone is moving behind you. In the Value Edition, you will also get a standard Sunroof,

push-button start, and keyless entry, Dual Zone Climate control with a clean air ionizer and automatic front defroster, heated seats, and a dimming rearview mirror with Homelink. There is another cool feature Hyundai calls the “smart trunk”. This interesting feature will actually open the trunk for you when you are standing next to the rear of the vehicle for more than 5 seconds. The only drawback is that if you are standing near your car, the trunk might open up. When it comes to in-car technology everyone has their own opinion on what they want. Reading all the options a vehicle has is one thing. You need to play around with everything it has; you might just be surprised by everything it holds.

Seven Hyundai Vehicles Recognized For Safety in IIHS Awards Industry-standard safety awards recognize models including Hyundai Ioniq, Elantra and Santa Fe

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Dec. 8, 2017 – In one of the automotive industry’s most recognized and rigorous vehicle tests, the Hyundai Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport have been awarded 2018 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ recognition. In addition, Hyundai’s Ioniq Hybrid, Elantra, Elantra GT, Sonata and Tucson models were Top Safety Pick award winners. “Hyundai was one of the leading brands for Top Safety Pick+ and Top Safety Pick awards in 2018,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president, corporate and product planning, Hyundai Motor America. “The safety of our customers and their loved ones is paramount in our thinking when we design new vehicles.” To qualify for the Top Safety Pick award, vehicles must have good ratings in five IIHS crashworthiness tests — small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints, an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and an acceptable or good headlight rating. For the Top Safety Pick+ designation, vehicles must also gain an acceptable or good rating in passenger-side small overlap front tests and improved headlight rating. Features which helped these vehicles garner these recognitions included (but were not limited to) optional frontcrash prevention, specific headlights and excellent performances in IIHS track tests at various speeds. “We raised the safety bar for 2018,” said Adrian Lund, IIHS president. “Now vehicles have to achieve an even higher level of safety. Our Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ awards help consumers zero in on the vehicles with the best overall performance for crash prevention and protection.”
