SHAMROCKS FOR THE SHORE 5K/10K The Causeway Family Sponsors and participates

By Joe Stroffolino-Editor Causeway Family Sponsors and participates in the SubFreezing edition Manahawkin-2017 marks my 3rd year running in the 5th annual Shamrocks for the Shore 5K. (The race was originally named Shamrocks for Sandy to raise funds for Super storm sandy victims.) The last two years I would call the weather normal for the second week of March. It was overcast and in the upper 40’s to low 50’s, still pretty chilly in my book, but tolerable. This year was completely different. Originally I looked at the 15 day forecast and it was calling for normal 40 to 50s temps. Then as the days crept closer the forecast changed drastically! Snow was being forecasted and temps in the low to mid 20’s at race time! I really despise the cold weather, let alone running in it. Now what? Well maybe they will cancel due to sub-freezing temperatures? Apparently they don’t cancel runs based on temperatures. I would have to get myself mentally and physically prepared for my first super cold weather 5k. I made a trip to TJMAXX and found some great cold weather running gear all in the clearance section! I felt confident that I would be warm enough during the 3.1 mile run.

From left to right: Erin McGee, Sam Calafiore, Ryan Purul, Gillian Purul, Wallace Moore, Randy Evans, Julian Cimino, Terry collins, Rob Libutti, Amanda Calafiore, Chad Scanlon, Kevin Meade, Heather Dodds, Andrew Battaglino, Dan Uccellini, Rae Magee, Joe Stroffolino, Ryan Ehrhart, Lorraine Aiello, Pat Magee, Maureen Gogarty, Deirdre Lipowski, Antonio Brito.

On the Sunday morning, after moving our clocks ahead an hour, I arrived at the Stafford Township Municipal building. When I looked at the temperature reading in my car at 7:45am it read 21 degrees. Ok no problem I’m prepared! I stayed in my car as long as possible and let the heated seat sink in a bit more. I exited the warmth and adjusted to the sudden 50 degree drop. I did some warming up and a quick 10 minute run as well. At 8:30, along with 97 other brave and committed souls I took off at the starting line. I crossed the finish line 28:32 later giving me third place in the Men’s 50-59 year age bracket. I conquered my fear of this extra frigid morning run.

Causeway Medal winners From left to right: Joe Stroffolino, Lorraine Aiello, Rob Libutti, Julian Cimino, Alex Howley, Andrew Bataglino, Chad Scanlon and Terry Collins(missing)

That was my story. There are many other more amazing performances from this year’s Shamrocks for the Shore run. This is also the third year that the Causeway Family entered as a team and our first year as a sponsor! This year Causeway had 23 team members participate! In all Causeway had 8 team members win medals. Chad Scanlon took first place overall with a scorching time of 17:43! Chad is currently training for a 50 mile Ultra-Marathon. Alex Howley finished in second place overall with an amazing time of 20:41. Another impressive performance was from Julian Cimino who finished 1st in his 20-29 age group with a time of 22:40. Andrew Battaglino finished in third place in the 20-29 group as well. Rob Libutti logged his personal best running an impressive 24:41 and finishing first in his 30-39 age group. In

the “Old guys” category, age 50-59, Terry Collins and yours truly finished 2nd and 3rd place respectively with times of 27:42 and 28:32. Last but not least Lorraine Aiello finished in second place in her 60 plus age group. My favorite story from last year is still my favorite this year. Taking third place overall was Jessica Abbott with an incredible time of 20:55! Why so incredible you ask? Well Jessica is only 8 years old. I’m convinced she is a future Olympian! Her 8 year old male counterpart Jonathon Mandell clocked a still impressive time of 24:39! Congratulations to all the participants and finishers of this year’s race! In the 10K the top finishers were Thomas Smith with an impressive 41:04 in first place, Shaun Cronen finished 2nd in 51:50 and in 3rd place Dominic Boeta with a time of 51:39. There were 38 total 10k participants.

FORD ADVANCES VEHICLE ENTERTAINMENT WITH LIVE TV DEARBORN, MI – Ford is reinventing the way drivers and passengers entertain themselves while on the road, offering new ways to wirelessly stream live TV and listen to music in its newest SUVs.

or satellite system and watch live TV on the road.

These new features are a result of shifting trends toward streaming services, whether for television shows, movies, music, podcasts and more. For example, one in three U.S. consumers currently listen to streaming music, according to trade association IFPI, with Generation Z and Millennials streaming at a more frequent rate. “Increasingly, our on-the-go customers are streaming music and television to their personal devices,” said Michael O’Brien, Ford SUV Group Marketing manager. “We’re meeting this demand in our biggest and smallest SUVs.” In the all-new Expedition, available this fall, an available Wi-Fi hotspot supports as many as 10 devices at once – up to 50 feet from the vehicle – while an available dual-headrest rear seat entertainment system provides a next-generation video experience that allows passengers to watch live TV via SlingPlayer™ on either of two video screens. The system represents the first time SlingPlayer – which connects to a user’s home Slingbox™ account – is offered in an automobile. In the all-new EcoSport, available in early 2018, as well as in the new Expedition, Ford offers stream-friendly technology including Apple CarPlay™and Android Auto™ capability, SiriusXM™ radio, an 8-inch touchscreen, and USB ports and power outlets that allow customers

“This entertainment system creates an entirely new viewing experience in the vehicle,” said Craig Patterson, Ford Expedition brand marketing manager. “It brings the smart TV experience to Expedition. Together, they completely

to connect and charge their many devices and listen to or watch content on-demand. These media experiences are bolstered in both Expedition and EcoSport by the highquality audio of the available Ford-exclusive B&O PLAY™ Premium Audio System. Live TV viewing experience coming to all-new Expedition When the 2018 Ford Expedition reaches showrooms later this year, passengers will be able to use the available dual-headrest rear seat entertainment system monitors to watch movies and video – even TV shows and live sporting events – streamed from a home cable or satellite system.* The system, called EVO by developer VOXXHirschmann Corp., includes two 8-inch monitors integrated into the back of the front-seat headrests, a secure, in-vehicle wireless network hub that enables passengers to connect using a mobile device, and a host of sources by which to view content – including an industry-first SlingPlayer that lets them connect to a home cable

change the dynamic of a family road trip.” SlingPlayer is software embedded into the entertainment system that lets passengers connect to a home-based Slingbox system to watch and control the TV signal. Passengers can use additional sources to view content, including a DVD player, HDMI, USB and SD card. Passengers can watch content from their Android®-based smartphone equipped with Miracast™ streaming. They can also stream video to the displays using the entertainment system app’s SmartStream function on compatible iOS® or Android devices.

POSTSEASON PREDICTIONS By Wallace Moore-Sales Manager Causeway Ford and Lincoln.

WINNER: CHICAGO

Baltimore vs Texas – Baltimore will push the Red Sox in September for the divisional crown but fall just short. Texas added depth in their lineup with the additions of Gomez and veteran backstop Lucroy, facing a healthy Yu Darvish in a one game playoff is a daunting task.

NY Mets vs. Los Angeles Dodger: The New York Mets after a few early bumps and bruises put all the pieces together late in the year to claim the NL East crown. Not much needs to be said about Clayton Kershaw he may end up as the best Dodgers pitcher of all-time (no offense to the great Sandy Koufax).

WINNER: TEXAS

WINNER: NY Mets

DIVISIONAL ROUND Texas vs. Cleveland: Cleveland off of an excellent but disappointing (up 3-1 in the World Series)season last year prove that was not a fluke as they finish #1 in the AL with 97 wins. Texas lack of depth in their rotation proves costly. Boston vs. Houston: Houston with the best lineup of young stars in the game led by the double play combination of Altuve & Correa lead Houston to the AL West crown. The Sawx are not the same team without Big Papi, David Price with elbow concerns in spring training and a down year for Rick Porcello following his CY Young campaign has Boston bringing out their golf clubs earlier than usual. WINNERS: Cleveland, Houston

ALCS Cleveland vs. Houston: Kluber, Salazar & Carrasco in a seven game series is as tough as you are going to get in the American League. The future looks very bright for Houston, I have a feeling this will not be the last we hear from them in the next few seasons. WINNER: CLEVELAND

NL WILD CARD Washington vs. Colorado: A Rockies team that is loaded with All Stars and with a bullpen that proves to be one of the best in baseball makes a run at the LA Dodgers for NL West supremacy. Washington has a disappointing year and is ousted in the one game Wild Card Playoff WINNER: COLORADO

NL DIVISIONAL ROUND: Chicago vs. Colorado: Following their first World Series in over a century Chicago races to an early NL Central lead and never looks back winning over 100 games and getting home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Colorado pushes Chicago to the brink but ultimately comes up just short and is heading home following a successful year. B:12.25” T:12”

NLCS NY Mets vs. Chicago: With the best staff in baseball and a few additions along the way to bolster an already solid bullpen, the Mets look to get back to the World Series following a wild card loss last season. The biggest lose for the Cubs is not felt until deep in October, without Aroldis Chapman to rely on for those tough five out saves, the Cubs bullpen falters and the Mets are headed back to the World Series. WINNER: NY Mets

WORLD SERIES: Cleveland vs. NY Mets: The two best rotations in baseball square off in a low scoring pitching dominated World Series. Michael Conforto proves that last year was just a sophomore slump and gives Cespedes the protection he needs in the middle of the order, David Wright after several very rough years returns to be the team leader in the clubhouse and on the field. WINNER NY Mets: The Mets ride pitching and timely hitting to a World Series title AL MVP – Jose Altuve and Manny Machado head a two horse race that comes down to the wire, even though Altuve’s Astros take their division, Machado takes home the MVP honors with a monster year of over 40 homeruns and 120 RBI’s. NL MVP – In a hitter friendly park and with a supporting cast that is unmatched Nolan Arenado takes home 2017 NL MVP honors with one of the best offensive years in memory. AL CY YOUNG – No worries about Kate Upton getting upset with the CY Young voting process this year as Justin Verlander follows a strong 2016 season with an even better 2017 season and walks away with the award. NL CY YOUNG – If it wasn’t for a back injury that cost Kershaw most of the second half, he would have four CY Young trophies for his mantle. At the age of 29 Kershaw wins his fourth CY Young and starts to get in the discussion as one of baseball’s all time greats.

CUT ALONG DOTTED LINE

MARCH 27, 1939 - MARCH MADNESS IS BORN

The University of Oregon defeats The Ohio State University 46–33 on this day in 1939 to win the first-ever NCAA men’s basketball tournament. The Final Four, as the tournament became known, has grown exponentially in size and popularity since 1939. By 2005, college basketball had become the most popular sporting event among gamblers, after the Super Bowl. The majority of that betting takes place at tournament time, when Las Vegas, the internet and office pools around the country see action from sports enthusiasts and once-a-year gamblers alike.

For the first 12 years of the men’s tournament, only eight teams were invited to participate. That number grew steadily until a 65-team tournament format was unveiled in 2001. After a “play-in” game between the 64th and 65th seeds, the tournament breaks into four

regions of 16 teams. The winning teams from those regions comprise the Final Four, who meet in that year’s host city to decide the championship.

The most successful team in NCAA men’s tournament history has been the UCLA Bruins, who have taken home a record 11 championships, 10 of them under legendary coach John Wooden between 1964 and 1975. The University of Kentucky is second with seven titles and Indiana University rounds out the top three with five tournament wins. At the end of every tournament, a Most Outstanding Player is chosen. Almost all of these players go on to productive careers in the NBA. Lew Alcindor, later Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, won the award three times while leading UCLA to three national championships in 1967, 1968 and 1969. Bill Walton, who succeeded Alcindor at center for UCLA,

Jerry Lucas of Ohio State, Alex Groza of Kentucky and Bob Kurland of Oklahoma A&M all won the award twice.

The NCAA held its first women’s basketball tournament in 1982. The women’s tournament started with 32 teams, expanding to 64 teams before the 1994 season. Today, the women’s format echoes the men’s, with play in four regions culminating in a Final Four held in a single location. The championship is played the day after the men’s, concluding the college basketball season. The most dominant team in women’s tournament history has been the Tennessee Volunteers, who won six championships under renowned coach Pat Summit from 1973 to 2006. The Connecticut Huskies are second, with five championships under coach Geno Auriemma. Past women’s Most Outstanding Player winners include Cheryl Miller of USC, Diana Taurasi of Connecticut and Chamique Holdsclaw of Tennessee; all went on to become stars of the WNBA.www.history.com.

NISSAN CONDUCTS ON-ROAD AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE TESTING IN EUROPE

LONDON – As part of its commitment to creating a zero-emission, zero-fatality future for mobility, Nissan today showed to the media its real-world testing of next generation autonomous drive prototype vehicles taking place in the east of London.

All of this helps allow the vehicle to operate in an autonomous manner on both highway and city/urban roads including runabouts once the destination points are entered into the navigation system.

Good News for Preventing Colorectal Cancer

Causeway Gazette

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. In the United States, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death. The average American has about a one in 20 chance of developing this type of cancer, which usually starts in the colon or rectum as a growth called a polyp. Fortunately most polyps do not progress to cancer.

What is a colorectal cancer screening? A colorectal cancer screening is done to check for cancerous or pre-cancerous cells in patients who have no symptoms of the disease. This is the one of the most important weapons against colorectal cancer. Screenings are recommended to begin at age 50, unless otherwise recommended by your physician (depending on family history). Regular screenings can prevent colorectal cancer by finding and removing precancerous polyps before they have the chance to turn into cancer. Additionally, a screening can help detect a polyp that has already formed into cancer early when it is small and in a more treatable stage. When found in an early stage before it has spread, the colorectal cancer five-year relative survival rate is about 90 percent. The most common screening tests include: • Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) – This test checks for blood in the stool, which could be a sign of cancer or large polyps. It is done at home with a kit received from the laboratory or doctor’s office along with instructions. It is advised that this test be performed yearly and, if it tests positive for blood, that it be followed by a colonoscopy. • Stool DNA Test – Cologuard, a stool DNA test currently available, is a new, non-invasive option to test for colon cancer. It requires a kit that is used at home to collect a stool sample and is then mailed back to the company. This test checks for DNA changes that could be a sign of cancer or polyps. It also checks for

Ice Hockey

Congratulations Southern Regional Ice Hockey on defeating Jackson Liberty on Wednesday, 2/1/17 by a score of 5-1. With the win the Rams won the 2016-2017 Shore Conference “A” South Division with a record of 8 and 0. Congrats athletes and coaches. #RamPride

The good news is that the incidence and mortality from colorectal cancer has been decreasing in part due to screening technology. “Colorectal screenings are unique because they not only help detect cancers at an early, curable stage, but they also help prevent the cancer itself. During a screening, gastroenterologists can remove polyps, which in some cases prevents them from developing into something more serious,” says Steven Koerner, D.O., chairman of the Gastrointestinal Section of Southern Ocean Medical Center.

Golf & Soccer blood in the stool, which is an additional sign of cancer. If the test is positive (abnormal), a colonoscopy would then be performed to confirm it and possibly to remove any polyps. Not everybody is eligible for this type of test, as it is only for those with an average risk of colon cancer and currently only Medicare insurances cover this test. • Colonoscopy – This test uses a flexible, lighted tube with a small camera on the end to look at the entire length of the colon and rectum. To prepare for this test you may be asked to follow a special diet prior to the procedure in order to completely clean out your colon. Patients are sedated during this test. If the test is negative, most patients will not need a repeat study for up to 10 years. • Sigmoidoscopy – This procedure is similar to a colonoscopy but only looks at part of the colon and rectum. Bowel prep is normally required but is not as extensive as one would use for a colonoscopy. Sedation is not usually needed for this procedure. If a polyp is found, a colonoscopy would then be needed to look at the rest of the colon. This test is repeated every five years.

Congratulations Senior Athletes, Matt Rizzo (Southern Boys Golf) and Rachel Rizzo (Southern Girls Soccer) on continuing their education and Athletic careers. Matt will attend Drew University and Rachel Rizzo committed to Kutztown University. Good Luck Matt and Rachel.

Basketball

Each test has its own pros and cons unique to your individual needs or case, which should be discussed with your doctor. Southern Ocean Medical Center also has an “open access endoscopy program” making colonoscopies more convenient. With this program your doctor can refer you directly for a screening colonoscopy without having to first visit a gastroenterologist. To learn more about colorectal cancer or the open access program, visit Endoscopy Services on SouthernOceanMedicalCenter.com.

Indoor Track

One person can make a difference. In May 1985, Dr. Gordon «Gordy» Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, raising money to help the American Cancer Society with the nation›s biggest health concern: cancer.

Congratulations Southern Regional Girls Indoor Track on winning the 2016-2017 NJSIAA South Jersey Group IV Championship on Friday, February 3, 2017 at the Toms River Bubble. Congrats athletes and coaches. Gordy spent a grueling 24 hours circling the track at the University of Puget Sound. Friends, family, and patients watched and supported him as he walked and ran more than 83.6 miles and raised $27,000 through pledges to help save lives from cancer. As he circled the track, he thought of how he could get others to take part. He envisioned having teams participate in a 24-hour fundraising event. The next year, 19 teams were part of

the first Relay at the historical Stadium Bowl and raised $33,000. Gordy passed away August 3, 2014, at the age of 71 from heart failure after battling stomach cancer. But his legacy lives on. He helped shape an idea that started as one man walking and running a track and helped turn it into a global event raising over $5 billion to help save lives throughout the world.

Diet Vs Lifestyle

Basketball

Spring and Summer are right around the corner. With Spring forward here and Spring fever upon us. What are your thoughts of losing weight? Is it a quick fix to lose the weight that is desired? You do get that feeling of accomplishment but how do you feel for the long term? Yes we all can set our minds to Diet, but if it is a long term goal you are looking to achieve, then “Dieting” is not the direction you want to take. Think about this “How do you know that you are making life style changes? What does it look like or feel like? Is there Pixie Dust that flys over you? It is a mindset! You have to start with thinking what do you want to happen. Put it on paper, all your thoughts!

Congratulations Southern Regional Boys Freshmen Basketball on defeating TR North on Tuesday, February 21st and winning the 2017 Mustang Classic at Brick Memorial. The Rams are coached by Southern Alum Joe Nagy (Class of 2002). #RamPride

Dr. Seuss Day

On Thursday, March 2, 2017 Southern Regional High School Athletics celebrated Dr. Seuss Day with Stafford Twp Schools. 20 Athletes from Southern read to students at both Ocean Acres Elementary School and Stafford Twp PLC. Thank you to both administrations from each school district giving these student athletes an opportunity to give back to our wonderful community. Also special thanks to the SNN crew for filming the event. #RamPride

What is your “Why”?! Why do you want to lose weight? If it is for an event, this is Great but what happens to your mindset after you attain your goal for the event and the event comes and goes? Do you go backwards (reverse, what happens when you drive your car in reverse, can you drive your car the entire time in reverse? It is dangerous and you may crash your car) on your journey. If you do go backwards what is your mindset now, is it like the car in reverse or do you now have the mindset to keeping moving forward. Take inventory of yourself. Yes you may of started with losing weight for the event but during the process did you notice you have changed. How you feel about yourself, your mindset is now for you and what you want! Knowing that you do have the will power and strength (inner that is) and you now believe in yourself, You Can Do This! There was no Pixie Dust but just you and your strengths that have always been there and now you have brought them out. There is that pep to your step, hold your head up high. It is one step in front of the other and you will attain those goals one at a time, when you conquer a goal, make a new one, But write it down, on the same paper the other goals where written on and post it where you will see it!

When we “Diet” it is all about the Scale! It is not about how we got that scale to move, just as long as it moved! You stop eating certain foods and you substitute with other foods. It has nothing to do with the inside of your body and do we really know what it is doing to the inside of our body. A Diet is external changes and is a temporary fix. Are you putting into your body the right amount of good food (fuel) that your body (car) needs to run properly? A “Lifestyle” is about you! It’s about the small changes and the small attainable goals. Set yourself up for goals you know you are able to attain; such goals should be for your eating lifestyle as well as Activity. Yes Activity! I ask you this question, When you think activity, what did you think? Was it oh no not that word? Well activity should be any type of movement. Think of things you enjoy. Think of things you enjoyed as a kid and through your life. You do not have to do the activity for the amount of time that you would do it as a kid but all I ask is for you to try it! Have fun with this lifestyle Goal! ( I would love for you to stop by Honda and let me know what you decided to try to do) How does making these changes and trying old and new things make you feel? “Lifestyle Vs Diet” Lifestyle is for your life. Diet is for short term! When we diet and we have a bad day we feel defeated. If we have the mindset that what you are doing is for life, and we have a moment in time of making an unhealthy choice, we do not throw our hands up in the air like we really don’t care. We simply acknowledge what we did, brush ourselves off and move on. We do not beat ourselves up. Life is always changing, so eating to live is what we need to do, not living to eat. A Diet is short term, Lifestyle is for Life! “Is this Food Worthy of Me?”

Lincoln Continental’s Rhapsody Find Common Ground In Beauty, Serenity

DEARBORN, Mich., MARCH 13, 2017 – Versatile shades of blue, popular in spring designer collections, create the signature Black Label theme of the 2017 Lincoln Continental. Rhapsody uses a rich blend of materials to create a layered effect that complements the monochromatic tone in shades of blue. The materials are purposely arranged to flow like water: Glossier materials highlight the upper portion of the interior, while more lush touch points are lower, down to the softer, thicker carpet. Supple leather, rich Alcantara® sueded cloth, mesh and shearling combine to create an exceptionally diverse tactile experience. “Rhapsody takes a bit of our Lincoln heritage, our signature blue, and modernizes it,” says David Woodhouse, design director, The Lincoln Motor Company. “It’s soft, it’s beautiful, and it’s truly inspiring.”

The versatility of blue is part its allure. The Pantone Color Institute placed three blue shades in the Top 10 colors of the season as part of a palette based on the relaxing, refreshing beauty of nature. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Institute, says in the consulting group’s 2017 Fashion Color Report that the range of colors evokes a spectrum of emotion and feeling. In her book “Color: Messaging and Meaning,” Eiseman, a renowned authority on color, delves into the psychological applications and contexts of color. Blue, she writes, has long been associated with serenity, respite and tranquility in nature, while industries have found the hue a perfect representation of quality and achievement. In some cultures, she says, blue is even considered a color of protection. In the Lincoln Continental, the unique, monochromatic style of Rhapsody sends a message all its own, says

• Shades of blue are popular in fashion this spring – ranging from tranquil to refreshing and included as part of a palette based on nature, according to Pantone Color Institute • Rhapsody is the signature Lincoln Black Label theme for the 2017 Lincoln Continental; the unique monochromatic interior offers rich, layered tones of blue in a multitude of textures • Rhapsody has many inspirations, among them Lincoln’s heritage, the sheer beauty of color, even a classic Gershwin tune Marcia Salzberg, senior designer for color and materials, The Lincoln Motor Company. She agrees that blue is an incredibly versatile shade. “Through the texture and the tones, we were able to evoke feelings of warmth, comfort and security – we’re able to offer a bit of sanctuary.” The inspiration for the style was as unique as the interior itself. “We had so much inspiration, from all around us,” says Salzberg. “We looked at the color of custom business suits, at nature, how day fades into night, how the sky gets so soft and velvety. We looked at our heritage, at Lincolns

Celebration & Traditions of St. Patricks Day Saint Patrick’s Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century and is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland), the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Lutheran Church. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, céilithe, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. Christians also attend church services and the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day, which has encouraged and propagated the holiday’s tradition of alcohol consumption. Saint Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the British Overseas Territory of Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora around the world, especially in Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand. Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated in more countries than any other national festival. Modern celebrations have been greatly influenced by those of the Irish diaspora, particularly those that developed in North America. In recent years, there has been

criticism of Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations for having become too commercialised and for fostering negative stereotypes of the Irish. On St Patrick’s Day it is customary to wear shamrocks and/or green clothing or accessories (the “wearing of the green”). St Patrick is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish. This story first appears in writing in 1726, though it may be older. In pagan Ireland, three was a significant number and the Irish had many triple deities, a fact that may have aided St Patrick in his evangelisation efforts. Patricia Monaghan says there is no evidence that the shamrock was sacred to the pagan Irish. However, Jack Santino speculates that it may have represented the regenerative powers of nature, and was recast in a Christian context‍—‌icons of St Patrick often depict the saint “with a cross in one hand and a sprig of shamrocks in the other”. Roger Homan writes, “We can perhaps see St Patrick drawing upon the visual concept of the triskele when he uses the shamrock to explain the Trinity”. The colour green has been associated with Ireland since at least the 1640s, when the green harp flag was used by the Irish Catholic Confederation. Green ribbons

of the past – at how blue was such an important, signature color.” They also listened, she says, to George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Hearing its long overture’s many highs and lows was inspiring. “I just thought, ‘That’s so representative of our lives today,’” says Salzberg. “It doesn’t matter who you are or how much money you have – you have joys in life, you have those high crescendo points and yes, you have some lows. “We felt it simply captured the tempo of life for the Lincoln client.”

Widely recognized and observed throughout the country as a celebration of Irish and Irish-American culture. and shamrocks have been worn on St Patrick’s Day since at least the 1680s. The Friendly Brothers of St Patrick, an Irish fraternity founded in about 1750, adopted green as its colour. However, when the Order of St. Patrick— an Anglo-Irish chivalric order—was founded in 1783 it adopted blue as its colour, which led to blue being associated with St Patrick. During the 1790s, green would become associated with Irish nationalism, due to its use by the United Irishmen. This was a republican organisation—led mostly by Protestants but with many Catholic members—who launched a rebellion in 1798 against British rule. The phrase “wearing of the green” comes from a song of the same name, which laments United Irishmen supporters being persecuted for wearing green. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the colour green and its association with St Patrick’s Day grew. The wearing of the ‘St Patrick’s Day Cross’ was also a popular custom in Ireland until the early 20th century. These were a Celtic Christian cross made of paper that was “covered with silk or ribbon of different colours, and a bunch or rosette of green silk in the centre”. www.wikipedia.com

March Madness: Winter Weather Whiplash

This month brings lots of planning for Spring. There is so much to do to clean up around the yard from the dead leaves to the gardens to tidy up. Bushes and trees have overgrown and need to be cut back. Gardens have those By Donna Stroffolino last bunches of leaves Professional Stylist, Simply Hair hidden in between the perennials, and never mind the pile of mulch we need to add to the beds every year. We just want to get started on those nice spring days. But not so fast. The cold is returning again in a few days. Don’t put away your scarves and gloves yet. So when the winter day returns, I like to do my planning for the outside work to begin shortly. It is a good use of a cold day.

My perennials have been around for 10-15 years at our house. They are overtaking the gardens. The once care free garden has turned into a very

messy one. It is time to dig some out and move them somewhere else. And where did all those vinca plants come from? I planted a few annuals in some pots one year and they turned into vines climbing all over the house. I have no choice but to dig up those invaders. I need to add that to my list! The weeds need to be separated from the plants coming up in the beds. Then those bags and bags of mulch need to be laid down. I don’t know how mulch disappears from the previous year. You could also plan to hire someone to do the entire garden clean up this year. They come in and do it all in a fraction of the time. It’s a lot of work to have neat and tidy gardens, but it is so rewarding any way it gets done.

someone else can. March is also a time for garage sales to start up. You could do a garage sale to get rid of old household items too, or go out and hunt for things you are looking to add to your collections. Estate sales are also good for finding fun items.

Since it is still technically winter, the cleaning out of items that are longer needed continues. The Big Brothers and Sisters company sends a card every month for collecting older household items and clothes. It is very convenient coming right to your house to pick up packed bags and boxes or used books. They come in areas on a particular date, so it helps to set a goal of having donations ready by then. Every month I get rid of some more things. If we can’t use the items anymore, I’d prefer that

This month is also a good time for planning Spring cleaning and any home updates to do during the year. It is easier tackling your spring cleaning after you cleared out the extra clutter all winter. It is easy to collect many items when in your home for a few years. There are books that were read, cookbooks collected you no longer use, and endless cds. There are always things to do to make your living environment more efficient and enjoyable.

THE WAIT IS NEARLY OVER NEW 2017 HONDA CIVIC TYPE R MAKES GLOBAL DEBUT AT GENEVA MOTOR SHOW

“The fastest, most powerful Honda ever sold in America, the Type R caps off the incredible success story of our 10th generation Civic lineup,” said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president & general manager of the Honda Division, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “We’re happy to inform our U.S. enthusiasts that the long wait for the forbidden fruit of Honda Type R performance is nearly over!”

The Civic Type R chassis builds on the major upgrades undertaken for the 10th-generation Civic makeover with model-exclusive spring, damper and bushing settings, a new Dual-Axis front suspension setup with aluminum lower arms and steering knuckles for improved at-thelimit cornering and reduced torque steer; a new four-wheel Adaptive Suspension System with three-chamber dampers; a retuned and adaptive dual-pinion electric power steering system with variable gear ratio; and a helical limited-slip front differential. Mounted to the suspension are 20inch aluminum alloy wheels shod with 245/30R 20 Continental ContiSportContact 6 performance tires. Decisive stopping power comes from Brembo 4-pot aluminum calipers squeezing 350mm (13.8-inch) cross-drilled rotors at the front. The rear braking system features solid 305mm (12-inch) rotors.

The new Civic Type R, sharing the body style of the 5-door hatchback variant of the tenth-generation global Honda Civic platform, will be powered by a U.S.-built 2.0-liter DOHC, direct-injected and turbocharged i-VTEC in-line 4-cylinder engine with peak ratings of 306 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 295 lb.-ft. of torque from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm. The engine will be mated exclusively to a short-throw 6-speed manual transmission with rev matching capability – employing automatic throttle blips for smoother shifts and power delivery. A new singlemass flywheel reduces clutch inertia by 25 percent versus the previous (European) Type R and a lower final gear ratio is employed to improve acceleration response.

The Type R’s scalpel-sharp responses are further enhanced by a body more rigid than the substantially improved Civic Hatchback on which it’s based – with a 38 percent increase in torsional rigidity and 45 percent gain in bending rigidity versus the previous Civic Type R – enhancing steering response and cornering stability while mitigating body vibration and cabin noise. The improvements are made possible by the application of structural adhesive throughout the body. Ultra-high strength steel is used for 14 percent of the body structure, and the Type R has an aluminum hood, contributing to a 16 kg (35 lb) reduction in body weight versus the previous Type R, and a 7 kg (15 lb) reduction versus the base 2017 Civic Hatchback.

GENEVA – Honda today took the wraps off one of the most anticipated models in its history with the unveiling of the production 2017 Civic Type R at the Geneva Motor Show. The long-awaited Civic Type R, slated to go on sale in the U.S. in late spring with an MSRP in the mid-$30k range, is the first ever Type R-badged Honda to be sold on American soil. The Type R will feature a high performance 2.0-liter turbocharged powertrain, substantially upgraded body and chassis, and other trackready, Nürburgring-tuned and tested performance components. The 2017 Civic Type R will make its U.S. debut at the New York International Auto Show on April 12, 2017.

March 7, 2017 – Hyundai Motor today unveiled its futuristic FE Fuel Cell Concept that looks ahead to the next generation of hydrogenpowered vehicles. Having established itself as a global leader for hydrogen transportation, the company has reaffirmed its commitment to fuel cell vehicle development at the Geneva Motor Show 2017. The FE Fuel Cell Concept represents the next step for Hyundai Motor toward realizing its ultimate ambition of creating a zeroemission Hydrogen Energy Society. In early 2017 at the Davos World Economic Forum, Hyundai Motor Company joined the launch of the Hydrogen Council, a global initiative to promote the development and commercialization of fuel cell cars as an alternative to fossil fuel vehicles. This follows two decades at the forefront of hydrogen vehicle development, most recently with the ix35 Fuel Cell (Tucson Fuel Cell in some markets), which in 2013 became the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen-powered vehicle, and is currently on sale in 17 countries around the world. The FE Fuel Cell Concept continues Hyundai Motor’s commitment to fuel cell vehicle development and is part of the company’s eco-vehicle program that will see 14 or more new environmentally-focused models introduced by 2020. Spurred on by greater global demand for fuelefficient, eco-friendly vehicles, the program continues the example of

innovation set by IONIQ, the first car to offer a choice of three electrified powertrains in a single body type. The FE Fuel Cell Concept’s flowing form is inspired by nature and water – the car’s only emission – with the clean and calm design emphasizing its nonpolluting nature. Across the car, form follows function to deliver a minimalist style. Exemplifying this approach, the FE Concept features a dramatic and stylish rear air foil and integrated vents that provide aerodynamic efficiency through intelligent engineering. The concept’s name ‘FE’ stands for Future Eco, reflecting the innovative new technologies that complement the car’s eco-friendliness – a recognition of its unique fuel source. One of the most notable characteristics of the new concept is its internal air humidifier, which recycles water emitted by the car’s clean hydrogen energy circulation to create a more comfortable cabin environment. The FE Concept showcases Hyundai Motor’s fourth generation of hydrogen fuel cell technology, an evolution of research, development and real-world evaluation programs around the world. When compared with the current generation system used in the Tucson ix35 Fuel Cell, the new technology is 20% lighter, and achieves 10% greater efficiency. In addition, the power density of the fuel cell stack is increased by 30%, boosting the car’s range significantly. Hyundainews.com
