2012–2013 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friends, Thank you for making 2012-2013 a wonderful season! It couldn’t have happened without you. Your support allowed us to present talented artists, new education and outreach programs, and host many community events throughout the year. I’m sure you will agree that our third season was truly amazing. From the classical, dance, jazz, country, and Songbook performances to the exciting Encore Celebration Gala weekend, it was truly a memorable year. During our 2012-2013 season, the Center launched new educational and outreach programs such as the All-Access fieldtrips for elementary students to spend a day on the Center’s campus learning about different aspects of the arts. We were also inspired to offer classes such as Opera 101 and Ukulele 101 in conjunction with performances by opera star, Kathleen Battle and ukulele prodigy, Jake Shimabukuro. I was thrilled to join the Center in 2012 and upon my arrival quickly realized a strategic plan was needed to guide the future direction of the Center. As a young organization, a strategic plan was critical to our operational and fundraising success. The plan, which was finalized in mid-2013, provided a framework for how we can best serve our community and laid the groundwork for our sustainability. It also provided us with mission and vision statements to guide our future decisions and will position us for sustainable growth. The new mission of the Center for the Performing Arts is to welcome, engage, inspire, and transform through compelling performing arts experiences in a world-class environment. As with any non-profit organization, the Center wouldn’t be able to present the many varied artists and programs without the tremendous support from our individual donors, corporate sponsors, foundation, and government entities. A full list of our supporters can be found in the back of this report. I join our board of directors and our staff in thanking you for your continued support of the Center for the Performing Arts. With Appreciation and Best Wishes,

Tania Castroverde Moskalenko President/CEO

Campus Happenings In addition to the 77 Center Presents performances in the 2012–2013 season, the Center’s campus was also home to seven resident companies who produced more than 200 performances. Community performances and events also graced the Center’s stages as groups rented our facilities for their own use. In total, the Center’s campus welcomed 135,000 people to 315 ticketed events. In addition, the campus hosted free gatherings such as the Carmel Farmers Market (pictured above) which took place on Saturday mornings from May until October on the Center Green, plus weddings, business meetings, receptions, and tours. Education & Outreach Education and Outreach are two important components in the Center’s mission. We provide performing arts experiences, learning opportunities and cultural enrichment through programs for children, teens, schools, families, community partners and adults. Programs the Center hosted during the 2012-2013 season for students included: • Master classes with visiting guest artists who went into schools and worked one-on-one with students. • Field trips for elementary students who were able to spend the day on the Center’s campus learning about how to put on a performance in all three of our venues. • Artist Q & A sessions gave the opportunity for more than 1,400 students to meet artists and ask them questions during sound checks prior to performances and then were able to attend the concert for free • Discounted tickets were given to more than 3,000 students. Outreach opportunities for adults included: • Classics in Context lectures were free interactive pre-concert events where audience members explored aspects related to the concert. • Classes such as, Opera 101 and Ukulele 101, in conjunction with visiting artists Kathleen Battle and Jake Shimabukuro. • The Scene, the Center’s young professionals group, engaged adults under 40 through activities in conjunction with concerts. • Palladium Bookies a monthly book club dedicated to reading and discussing books about the performing arts.

The mission of the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative is to inspire and educate by celebrating the Great American Songbook. In June 2012, High school students from across the country participated in comprehensive Great American Songbook High School Vocal Academy & Competition workshops and master classes. The week-long program included musical education opportunities ranging from vocal technique, to song interpretation, and concluded with a final performance in the Palladium on June 15, 2012. Nick Ziobro from Syracuse, NY won the Great American Songbook High School Vocal Competition and became the Great American Songbook Youth Ambassador, performing six times across the country with Michael Feinstein, including a last concert with Marvin Hamlisch at the Pasadena POPS on July 21, 2012. The Great American Songbook Archive now houses 107 collections, including sheet music, arrangments, personal papers, recordings, and books. In 2012, the Archive received papers from the Meredith Willson estate consisting of scripts, scores, and audiovisual materials. The Initiative Gallery’s total attendance in 2013 was 7,353, including schoolage tour groups who enjoyed exhibitions showcasing important eras in the Great American Songbook’s history. “G.I. Jive: the Music and Entertainers of World War II” highlighted the music of the 1940’s and its role in creating a unified home front while spreading America’s music around the globe. In January 2013, the “Blast from the Past: Roaring Hot 20s Jazz” exhibit explored the growth of jazz in Indiana during the Prohibition era. Board of Directors Jeffrey C. This two - night affair began Friday night with a cocktail reception and silent auction, a gourmet dinner at the Indiana Roof Ballroom, and concluded with performances by two of the Great American Songbook Initiative’s High School Vocal Competition finalists, Tony Ponella and Tori Anna. Saturday night the event moved to the Palladium for the Songbook Hall of Fame Induction concert with musical tributes to the honorees by José Feliciano, Jimmy Smits, Tom Wopat, Michael Feinstein, and the 2012 Songbook Youth Ambassador, Nick Ziobro. The 2013 honorees were presented their awards and the concert concluded with a special performance by Liza Minnelli and Michael Feinstein.
