2014–2015 Annual Report

Dear Friends, Thank you for making 2014-2015 a wonderful season. It could not have happened without you. Your support allowed us to present talented artists, interactive educational programs, and numerous community events throughout the year. Thanks to your support we are vibrant and growing. We completed the second year of our three-year strategic plan and also took part of the Greater Indianapolis Performing Arts Market Survey. From the study we learned that in just four years the Center has become the 4th most familiar performing arts organization in Indianapolis. Sixty-one percent of those surveyed have attended a performance at the Center and 95% know the quality and caliber of programs we are providing for the community. In addition, we outperformed the market average in 13 out of 14 catagories such as diversity in programming and customer service. In order to meet the growing demand for interactive educational programs for all ages, we hired a full-time Community Engagement Manager. From dance master classes, to comedy improv workshops, pre-concert music sessions, to our popular Peanut Butter and Jam concert for young children, we have ensured our programs are responsive to the needs and desires of the community. As a non-profit organization, the Center can only present the many varied artists and programs thanks to the tremendous support from our individual partners, corporate partners, foundations, state, and local government. Because of you, we are able to “Bring the World to Central Indiana. On behalf of our Board of Directors and staff, and our volunteers, I thank you for your continued support of the Center for the Performing Arts. All good wishes, Tania Castroverde Moskalenko President/CEO

Education for All Ages Since it’s opening in 2011, education and outreach have been a critical component of the Center’s mission. The 2014-15 Season saw the continuation of the Center’s successful education and outreach programs such as Firestone FrontRow and the Palladium Bookies as well as the addition of new opportunities for engagement such as World Voice Day sponsored by the Voice Clinic of Indiana. The formation of an Educator Advisory Panel, made up of educators and curriculum directors throughout Hamilton County and Central Indiana, allows the Center to get valuable feedback on new programs and initiatives.

Programs the Center hosted during the 2014-2015 Season included:

Toddlers to Young Adults Duke Energy Peanut Butter & Jam PB&J sessions encourage young children to become engaged in the performing arts. These informal Saturday morning concerts are fun, lively, and educational. The season’s nine dynamic performances were diverse and highlighted Celtic, Middle Eastern, Polynesian, and Mexican music as well as jazz, symphonic, and Motown. SEP Science of Sound Terms and ideas taught in the classroom were reinforced through the real-world application by the Center’s audio and light engineers. The Palladium, a perfect venue to discuss the vocabulary and concepts of sound propagation and characteristics of light, hosted over 725 students in this “real-world” program. Firestone FrontRow Small groups of students, with special interest in the genre, were given unique access to Center Presents performers. Over 115 students sat in on artists sound checks and rehearsals then engaged in Q&A or special workshops with the accomplished professionals. Preshow Experiences Preshow performances are one way the Center connects with and highlights the talent in our own community. This year, we showcased young vocalists and dancers, hosted nationally acclaimed artist, Lobyn Hamilton, and held an Irish music session.

Master Classes & Residencies Students furthered the study of their art as they learned directly from worldclass Center Presents performers. In November, 42 students got the rare opportunity to participate in a master class with Tania Pérez-Salas. Artist Outreach Select Center Presents artists visited facilities for engagement with those who can’t physically attend Center shows. Prior to their shows at the Center, Illusionists and puppeteers were taken to senior communities & adaptive classrooms. Internships Several college and high school students had the opportunity to learn about marketing and fundraising as well as aspects of concert production including lighting, sound and technical staging.

Young Adults to Seniors The Scene Designed for and by young professionals, members come from diverse professional backgrounds, but all share a common interest in the arts and in making an impact. This year, members gathered for pre-show meet-ups and themed parties at Center Presents performances. Luminaries During the 2014-15 Season, more than 250 women participated in the Center’s dynamic women’s group, The Luminaries, which explores the performing arts, education, and what

inspires us all. The group met every other month last year for a presentation and lunch at the Palladium. Classics in Context During these complimentary preconcert lectures, attendees gained an insider’s perspective on the works being performed. Sessions were offered with each of the 6 performances in the Printing Partners Classical series. Palladium Bookies Dedicated to books about the performing arts, the group met the 2nd Monday of every month and averaged 30-45 attendees at each session. Great American Songbook Gallery Through the utilization of current technology the gallery is turned into a multimedia educational center for the Songbook. A touchscreen monitor allows visitors to see and hear the music as it was performed on stage and screen while digitized images turn the four walls of the gallery into a life-sized textbook. Exhibit cases display pieces from our collections. Tours Free tours of the Palladium were offered on a bi-weekly basis.

INSPIRE In a few short years, the Songbook Academy has grown to a week long program for 40 high school students from across the country. The national program is a Songbook intensive that includes master classes, workshops and individual training. Mentors from Broadway and top universities join Michael Feinstein to teach high school students the music from Broadway, Hollywood musicals and the Tin Pan Alley era of the early to mid-twentieth century. The week culminates in a Songbook Series “Final Performance” in the Palladium when The Great American Songbook Youth Ambassador is selected. Madelyn Baillio, from League City, TX served in 2014-2015 and represented the Foundation by performing at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall with Michael Feinstein, singing the National Anthem at an Indianapolis Colts game, and entertaining guests at the Songbook Hall of Fame Gala. “I’m thrilled that the 2015 Youth Ambassador will have similar experiences and the opportunities I have had thanks to Michael, the Songbook Foundation and people like you who support the Songbook programs. I do not know exactly when I fell in love with the Songbook, as I have listened to it since before I can remember. This music will stay alive as long as we keep singing and sharing and that’s what I plan to do! Thank you!” – Madelyn Baillio, 2014 Songbook Youth Ambassador EDUCATE In January 2015, the Songbook Foundation unveiled a new exhibit titled “Gus Kahn: The Man behind the Music.” Using materials and artifacts from Kahn’s papers housed in the Foundation’s archives, as well as items from our other

collections, the exhibit tells the story of the prolific lyricist who wrote “I’ll See You In My Dreams,“ “Carolina in the Morning,” and many others. The exhibit will run through January 2016. Last year, the Gallery welcomed 2,308 visitors including student groups, Center patrons and guests from as far away as Brazil. The rotating exhibit and interactive display is a favorite of both local and international visitors. We partnered with the IUPUI Graduate Museum Studies program to create educational materials that meet Indiana’s education guidelines for 6th-8th grade students. A project to digitize 1,300 endangered lacquer discs created between 1939 and 1950 began in the spring of 2015. Once digitized, the public will have access to these files on the website. Digitization will serve as both preservation and educational tools by making the recordings accessible to the public through gallery and online exhibits, collection guides and researcher visits. CELEBRATE The Great American Songbook Hall of Fame is a tribute to the people and personalities who created this extraordinary music. New members are inducted into the Hall of Fame in an annual ceremony and Gala Performance. The inductees for 2014 were: Shirley Jones, Johnny Mathis, Cole Porter, and Linda Ronstadt.
