introducing the 2017/18 season

Welcome to the seventh full season at the Center for the Performing Arts! We’re pleased and honored to present another exciting year of music and more on our campus. As you’ll see in these pages, we listen to our patrons and continually strive to bring you the rich and compelling schedule of artists and events you deserve: returning favorites such as Itzhak Perlman, Chris Botti and Sheryl Crow; rising stars like Gregory Porter and Damien Escobar; the Royal Philharmonic and other world-famous orchestras; and events that have become community traditions, including our annual holiday visit from Dave Koz and our New Year’s Eve Extravaganza presented by Taft, likely to sell out again this year. Be sure to check out the new University of Indianapolis Passport Series, a diverse mix for discerning audiences that includes contemporary ballet, classical guitar, sophisticated pop stylings and cultural traditions from around the world. And be assured that we’ll be adding events throughout the season, so what you see here is only the beginning. As always, none of this would be possible without the generous support of individuals and local employers like our season sponsor, Allied Solutions.

Jeff McDermott Interim President/CEO

It is truly remarkable to look back and see what we and our partner organizations have developed here since our opening in 2011. With our Center Presents performances, the productions mounted by our six Resident Companies (see p. 28), visits from the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and the many other touring shows and community events that grace our venues, there is almost always something happening at the Center. We remain the proud home and affiliate of the Great American Songbook Foundation, with its own events, attractions and resources (p. 22), and our Outreach and Education programs (p. 24) continue to bring the joy and enrichment of the arts to the community.

Michael Feinstein Artistic Director

Finally, please take note of the graphic below. The colorful visual accents you see in our materials this season are adapted from this soundwave of a voice reading the Center’s mission statement. That philosophy continues to guide us each and every day, and we’re grateful to you for bringing purpose to our work.

Inside the Logo: The above graph is a voice recording of the Center’s mission statement. The mission of the Center for the Performing Arts is to welcome, engage, inspire, and transform through compelling performing arts experiences in a world-class environment.

The mission of the Great American Songbook Foundation is to inspire and educate by celebrating the Great American Songbook. The beautiful melodies and thoughtful lyrics created by the musical masterminds of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood during the first half of the 20th century represent the golden age of American popular music. The Great American Songbook Foundation, based at the Palladium, carries out its unique mission to preserve America’s rich musical legacy in numerous ways: The Songbook Archives houses physical artifacts such as sheet music, recordings, and personal papers of songwriters including Meredith Willson (The Music Man), Johnny Burke (“Swinging on a Star”), Gus Kahn (“It Had to Be You”), and Hy Zaret (“Unchained Melody”). The Songbook Exhibit Gallery presents rotating interactive exhibits that share the history, music, and culture of the Songbook. The Songbook Academy® is a national program for high school singers, and is the only performing arts intensive dedicated to the music of the Songbook. PERFECT Harmony provides music therapy programming for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other neurodegenerative conditions. The Songbook Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to the Great American Songbook, with a new class inducted each year. A permanent exhibit honoring the people who created this extraordinary music is located in the Shiel Sexton Songbook Lounge on the Palladium’s Gallery level. Visit the Songbook Exhibit Gallery!

Located on the Gallery level of the Palladium Hours: Monday-Friday, 10 AM-4 PM The Gallery also is open prior to performances in the Songbook and Jazz Series and select additional performances at the Palladium.
