DEAR FRIENDS, Are you ready for the holidays? As usual, the Center is presenting a wide array of events in November and December, including several concerts in our popular St. Vincent Holiday Series. Just days after the local Veteran’s Day observance at the Tarkington, the U.S. Army Field Band will perform a free concert Nov. 15 at the Palladium. We are very proud to be able to present this inspirational, one-of-a-kind event to the public, in tribute to our nation’s men and women in uniform. Moving on, the calendar includes return appearances by popular acts like Jim Brickman, The Oak Ridge Boys, Ramsey Lewis and Celtic Thunder; artists such as Dave Koz, whose annual visits have become a holiday tradition for our patrons; and performers who are visiting our world-class facilities for the first time: the acclaimed contemporary jazz vocalist Gregory Porter, R&B-influenced “violin crooner” Damien Escobar, the pioneering chamber quintet Canadian Brass and a sold-out show by the rock band Evanescence. Also new this year will be some exciting seasonal activity on campus, courtesy of the City of Carmel. The inaugural Christkindlmarkt on Center Green, inspired by centuries-old German tradition, will give our patrons and other visitors a fun way to catch up on holiday shopping while enjoying refreshments and live entertainment. An adjacent skating rink, The Ice on Center Green, will provide hours of outdoor fun for local families. We look forward to seeing these attractions become new traditions for the community. We also hope you can join us December 31 for our third annual New Year’s Eve Extravaganza presented by Taft, with food, drink and live entertainment throughout the Palladium. Last year’s event sold out, so don’t wait too long to get your tickets. No matter how you decide to observe, celebrate and enjoy this special time of year, thank you for making the Center for the Performing Arts a part of your holiday season.

7:30pm | The Palladium

Performance Sponsored by Huntington Bank

The mission of the U.S. Army Field Band is to serve and inspire the American people by telling the Army story and honoring our soldiers and veterans at home and abroad as “The Musical Ambassadors of the Army.” This wide-ranging program will include marches, overtures, popular music, patriotic selections and instrumental and vocal solos, including Alan Menken’s music for Beauty and the Beast and a special rendition of George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” based on the original 1924 orchestration performed by the Paul Whiteman jazz band with Gershwin himself on piano. The performance will feature the 65-member Concert Band, the oldest of the Field Band’s four performing components, as well as the 29-member Soldiers’ Chorus, a mixed choral ensemble. Joining them for one selection will be a group of student musicians and vocalists from Noblesville High School.

GREGORY PORTER

Saturday, November 18 at 8PM | The Palladium Declared “America’s Next Great Jazz Singer” by Esquire and NPR Music, Gregory Porter claimed the Grammy® Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album with his 2013 Blue Note debut Liquid Spirit and again for his 2016 release, Take Me to the Alley. His brand-new album, Nat King Cole & Me, is a heartfelt tribute to the legendary singer and pianist Porter has viewed as both a musical inspiration and a father figure in the absence of his own father. Adapted from Porter’s original stage musical of the same title, the album features standards associated with Cole (“Mona Lisa,” “Nature Boy”) as well as a new rendition of Porter’s song “When Love Was King.” “It’s only natural that I go to the root of my inspiration and where I come from, and that root would be my mother and gospel music and Nat King Cole,” Porter says. “He left such great music – such beautiful things to listen to that you can’t help but be influenced by that extraordinary timbre, style and ultimate cool.” The Great American Songbook Exhibit Gallery will be open at 7pm the evening of this performance.

DAMIEN ESCOBAR Friday, December 1 at 8PM | The Palladium A native of Queens, N.Y., rising-star violinist Damien Escobar was only 10 years old when he became the youngest musician ever admitted to The Juilliard School. He and his brother began performing in the New York subways, mixing classical and contemporary influences as a duo called Nuttin’ But Stringz. They soon gained fame, winning a talent contest at the Apollo Theater, making the finals on America’s Got Talent and performing at the White House and the 2012 Presidential Inauguration. After the pair split in 2012, Escobar struggled personally and professionally and even abandoned music for a time. Since bouncing back as a solo artist and bandleader, the self-described “violin crooner” has found new success with his crossover blend of classical, jazz, pop, R&B and hip hop, landing numerous appearances on TV and at national events.

EVANESCENCE: SYNTHESIS LIVE WITH ORCHESTRA

Saturday, December 2 at 8PM | The Palladium Evanescence made its breakthrough in 2003 with the album Fallen, which sold more than 17 million copies worldwide and spawned the hit singles “Bring Me to Life” and “My Immortal” as well as Grammy® Awards for Best New Artist and Best Hard Rock Performance. After two more top-selling studio albums, 2006’s The Open Door and 2011’s Evanescence, the band took a hiatus before returning to touring in 2015. The year 2017 promises to be the biggest yet for Evanescence with the release of the new album, Synthesis, which recasts some of the band’s core material with lush string arrangements and electronic elements framing bandleader Amy Lee’s piano and vocals. The Synthesis Live tour, with a 28-piece orchestra joining the band onstage, promises a transcendent experience. “This is a total passion project for me,” Lee says. “There are so many layers in our music, underneath the huge drums and guitars. ... This will be our first time touring with orchestra, and I’m so excited to perform this way – really focus on the vocals and the emotion and the story we’ve built over the years.”

A TOUCH OF BRASS Canadian Brass blazes its own trail through the world of music By: Scott Hall Brass instruments are found in all kinds of music – classical, jazz, pop, soul and the list goes on. But a chamber ensemble comprising only tuba, trombone, French horn and a couple trumpets? That was a weird idea back in 1970, when a quintet called the Canadian Brass was formed. “I love to hear stories about the early days,” says trumpeter 24

Caleb Hudson, who joined the group not quite five years ago. “It’s a unique story, because at the time, there was really no path for a professional brass chamber ensemble. That had never really been done before.” Now, after nearly five decades, countless tours and 100 albums, the group is still going strong. It was the first such ensemble to play the main stage at Carnegie Hall and the first to tour China. Considered a national treasure in its homeland, Canadian Brass is a go-to choice to perform at official state events. Its honors have included a Grammy Award, three Grammy nominations and 15 nominations for Canada’s equivalent, the Juno Award.

Playing in the group has been a thrill for the 29-year-old Hudson, a native of Lexington, Ky. “I grew up listening to Canadian Brass,” he says. “I remember being 10 years old and listening to their albums. And basically every young brass player who is serious about their instrument grows up listening to Canadian Brass. So to actually be in the group – I’m the youngest member but it’s been four and a half years for me now – it’s really been an honor to be a part of that legacy.” Perhaps most interestingly, the group has essentially constructed an entire genre around itself, with a repertoire of more than 600 works in a

range of musical styles that were commissioned, arranged or transcribed specifically for the Canadian Brass. Some pieces are better than others, admits Hudson, a graduate of Michigan’s Interlochen Arts Academy and NYC’s revered Juilliard School. “Originally the group took a masterpiece approach, because brass quintet has the same musical heritage in terms of chamber music that string quartet or piano trio has,” he says. “So we had to borrow masterpieces and arrange them for our group. But in addition to that, we’ve commissioned over 100 works, and some (Continued...) 25

of them have proved to be really great, but the reality is that when you commission that many works, you never know what you’re going to get.” Audiences at the Palladium, however, will get the best. The ensemble’s Dec. 23 performance in Carmel will be the final stop on a 15-date year-end tour of the United States and Canada, including two nights in Toronto with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Hudson says. “It’s one of our favorites.” Rounding out the lineup are Christopher Coletti on trumpet, Bernhard Scully on horn and Achilles Liarmakopoulos on trombone. Working with youth is a priority for the Canadian Brass, who offer frequent performances, masterclasses, discussions and other educational opportunities for student groups.

The program will include a wide range of music and a fair amount of humor as the members introduce and perform the selections, Hudson says. The group’s visual signature includes gold-plated instruments and dark suits worn with white sneakers.

“What comes up a lot is how to really have a career in music that is something other than just trying to win an audition for a major orchestra,” says Hudson, who serves on the music faculty of Colorado State University when he is not on the road.

“Anything that we do that’s humorous, it’s an effort to try to illuminate something about the music,” he says, “what to look for, what to pay attention to.”

“When I was in college, I didn’t really know anything else except just practicing my instrument and playing with others,” he says. “I didn’t know about the marketing. I didn’t know what it takes to actually present an artist – the advertising, the relationships to maintain, the social media presence. There’s so much that goes into this.”

One highlight for the musicians is a suite of Christmas-related tunes associated with legendary swing bandleader Glenn Miller. Another will be a rendition of the timeless holiday classic “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch,” with the title role represented by founding member Chuck Daellenbach. “Our tuba player drew the short straw, so Chuck will be Mr. Grinch,”

Hudson advises young musicians to make their own connections and create their own opportunities to perform, even while they are still in school. “Whatever school or institution you’re a part of, there are never

going to be enough performance opportunities through that institution,” he says. “When I was in school, I would play at nursing homes and in hospitals. I played at a bunch of public schools. … And the performance experience and getting to know what the audience responds to, and changing your program and changing your approach based on that, was very valuable.”

be a good colleague, how to communicate in a respectful way, how to live with other people when you’re on the road for three weeks at a time, and how to make sure that you’re someone that other people can actually stand being around. And that applies to any career path.”

Another bit of advice, for musicians and everyone else:

CANADIAN BRASS CHRISTMAS

Saturday, December 23 at 8PM | The Palladium Since forming in the 1970s, this distinctive chamber quintet has toured the world and released over 100 albums as the leading standard-bearer for the role of brass in classical music. Canadian Brass was the first Western brass ensemble to perform in the People’s Republic of China and the first to take the main stage at Carnegie Hall. Over the years, the groundbreaking group has essentially built a musical genre around itself, with more than 600 works commissioned, arranged or transcribed specifically to suit its particular instrumentation. Led by tuba player and cofounder Chuck Daellenbach, the current lineup features Caleb Hudson and Christopher Coletti on trumpets, Achilles Liarmakopoulos on trombone and Bernhard Scully on horn. The varied Canadian Brass repertoire features brass standards as well as the works of Renaissance and Baroque masters, classical and contemporary compositions, marches, holiday favorites, ragtime, Dixieland, Latin, jazz, big band, Broadway tunes and Christian music as well as popular songs and standards. In this special holiday performance, the ensemble will perform a broad range of classical, traditional and pop tunes reflecting the spirit of the season. See related story, Page 24 series sponsor

ABOUT THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK FOUNDATION The mission of the Great American Songbook Foundation is to inspire and educate by celebrating the Great American Songbook. The beautiful melodies and thoughtful lyrics created by the musical masterminds of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood during the first half of the 20th century represent the golden age of American popular music. Based at the Palladium, the Great American Songbook Foundation is permanently affiliated with the Center for the Performing Arts and is one of only five worldwide Cultural Affiliates of the Los Angeles-based GRAMMY Museum®. The Foundation carries out its unique mission to preserve America’s rich musical legacy in numerous ways: The Songbook Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the Great American Songbook, with a new class inducted each year. A permanent exhibit honoring the people who created and popularized this extraordinary music is located in the Shiel Sexton Songbook Lounge on the Palladium’s Gallery level. The Songbook Archives houses sheet music, recordings, and other artifacts from the careers of artists such as songwriters Meredith Willson (The Music Man), Johnny Burke (“Swinging on a Star”), Gus Kahn (“It Had to Be You”), and Hy Zaret (“Unchained Melody”). The Songbook Exhibit Gallery presents rotating interactive exhibits that share the music, history, and culture of the Songbook. The Songbook Academy® Summer Intensive is a national performing arts program for high school vocalists and the only one of its kind dedicated to the music of the Songbook. PERFECT Harmony provides therapeutic music programming for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other neurodegenerative conditions. Visit the Songbook Exhibit Gallery! Located on the Gallery level of the Palladium Hours: Monday – Friday, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM The Gallery is also open prior to performances in the Songbook and Jazz Series and select additional performances at the Palladium.
