DEAR FRIENDS, The signs of summer are increasingly clear here at the Center for the Performing Arts. The Monon Trail is busy with walkers and runners, the Saturday morning Carmel Farmers Market has returned to the Center Green and we are gearing up to unveil the Center’s 2017-18 Season sponsored by Allied Solutions. Meanwhile, our fabulous 2016-17 Season is closing with a bang. The coming weeks will bring an evening of classical crossover music from teen vocal prodigy Jackie Evancho, stand-up comedy from actor and TV host Joel McHale, and the promise of new material and old favorites from three distinctive singersongwriters: Joe Jackson, David Gray and Sheryl Crow. (Technically speaking, Sheryl’s appearance is the first event of 2017-18.) We also look forward to another highlight of summer: our Great American Songbook Foundation’s annual Songbook Academy®, taking place July 15-22. From hundreds of applicants, the Foundation’s screening panel has selected 40 of the nation’s top high school vocalists for a life-changing week of workshops, masterclasses and performances led by Michael Feinstein and a team of music and theater professionals and educators. Events open to the public include the Public Masterclass on July 19, the Songbook Showcase performances on July 20 and the Songbook Academy® Finals on Saturday, July 22, when the participants vie for the title of Songbook Youth Ambassador and a chance to perform in prestigious venues across the country. Tickets for those events will go on sale June 1. We hope you’ve had a chance to enjoy multiple events during our sixth season at the Center, and we know you’ll be excited to hear about our lineup for 2017-18. Look for the official announcement and the opening of ticket sales on May 23!

AN EVENING WITH JACKIE EVANCHO
Saturday, May 20
at
8pm | The Palladium
Performance Sponsored by Thurston Springer Miller Herd & Titak Jackie Evancho burst into the national spotlight at the mere age of 10, stunning viewers and judges on America’s Got Talent with her flawless soprano and operatic repertoire. In the seven years since, she has released seven albums in a range of styles, all reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Classical Albums chart. Equally comfortable with Puccini or pop, Evancho epitomizes the increasingly popular “classical crossover” genre of vocal music. Her new two-CD release, Two Hearts, showcases both sides of her talents, as well as her first recordings of original material. Now returning for her second appearance at the Palladium, Evancho has been riding a string of high-profile performances including Pope Francis’s visit to the United States, the 58th Presidential Inauguration and on The Today Show and other national news outlets. Prior to the concert, please join us for display of visual and performing arts throughout the Palladium by the talented young students of Carmel schools, brought to you by Thurston Springer financial planning, the Carmel Arts Council and the Center for the Performing Arts.

TV’S JOEL MCHALE TAKES HIS SNARKY HUMOR ON THE ROAD By: Scott Hall You’d think Joel McHale would be ready for a long vacation. He spent 12 seasons mocking pop culture on E!’s The Soup while also taking film roles and squeezing in six seasons as roguish attorney Jeff Winger on the NBC/Yahoo comedy Community. As those runs ended, he popped up in last year’s miniseries revival of The X-Files. In October, McHale took on the world of celebrity memoirs with his own satirical offering, Thanks for the Money: How to Use My Life Story to Become the Best Joel McHale You Can Be. Already this year, he has hosted the People’s Choice Awards and wrapped up shooting the first season of CBS’s The Great Indoors, starring as a veteran adventure writer supervising an office of digitalminded millennials. But no, McHale is not resting on his laurels. He likes to keep busy. So in March, he launched a stand-up comedy tour that stops June 29 at the Palladium. “I’m a workaholic,” he said in an interview with writer Mark
Ambrogi of local newspaper chain Current Publishing LLC. “I always thought, as a kid, being an actor and getting to perform is such a bonus that I never wanted to stop doing it. I love being on stage, and I think it keeps me relatively young – well, it keeps me in my mid40s, where I am.” McHale, who got his start (Continued next page) says in improvoncomedy, performing with a live audience keeps him sharp for the highprofile hosting gigs he is offered, like the aforementioned People’s Choice show and the 2014 White House Correspondents Dinner. “It definitely keeps me on my toes,” he said. “It’s like going to a proverbial boxing gym every day. Getting to perform is a pleasure. It keeps me fresh and keeps me in shape so I can be ready when hosting stuff comes up. I have a ball doing it.” The current tour features “95 percent new material,” McHale says, and it involves venues of all kinds. 99
“It’s all over the map,” he told Ambrogi. “Some are concert halls, some are clubs, some are casinos, some are theaters. … I don’t think I’m playing any aquariums; that’s the only venue I’m not playing.” His book, Thanks for the Money, has been well received, with Entertainment Weekly calling it “a clever, much-needed antidote to the age of celebrity book deals.” Intended as a light and entertaining read, he told NPR in a recent interview, it still serves up plenty of snark aimed at wealthy, famous people who bemoan their many hardships in life.
“So when I see actors complaining about hours or material or things like that – how many other people’s jobs have catering?” he said. “How many people’s jobs have a person who will park your car? I mean, it’s all silly when you begin to look at it.”

DAVID GRAY: SOLO ACOUSTIC WITH J.S.ONDARA
Tuesday, May 23 at 7:30PM | The Palladium With a new compilation album spanning his quarter-century in music, British singer-songwriter David Gray comes to the Palladium for a special solo acoustic evening. The Manchester, UK native launched his professional career in the 1990s and distinguished himself from the pack with simple arrangements complemented by digital beats and samples, as heard on his breakthrough fourth album, White Ladder. Recorded at home as an independent project, it became a hit on both sides of the Atlantic after its 2000 re-release on Dave Mathews’ ATO Records, with singles such as “Babylon” and “Please Forgive Me” that remain radio staples. His tenth studio album, Mutineers, was released in 2014.
The Best of David Gray, released in October on CD and LP, is a 16-track set of greatest hits that includes two new cuts. The deluxe version features an extensive booklet and a second set of 15 additional songs. Adding to Gray’s reputation as an innovator, the album also is available on Spotify as an interactive collection, The Best of David Gray Weekly, which reorders itself every week based on the number of times each track is streamed. Opening the show will be Kenyan-born, Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter J.S. Ondara, whose influences include Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Ray LaMontagne and Damien Rice. series sponsor

JOE JACKSON: FAST FORWARD TOUR Friday, June 16 at 8PM | The Palladium
Best known for ’80s hits such as “Steppin’ Out” and “Breaking Us in Two,” eclectic composer and musician Joe Jackson is touting a new album and drawing material from across his four-decade career on the current Fast Forward Tour. Few artists have explored the musical landscape as fully as the British-born Jackson, whose output spans the worlds of pop, rock, classical, reggae, R&B, salsa and swing. Though a graduate of London’s Royal Academy of Music, he made his first commercial impact as a new-wave singer-songwriter with the 1979 album Look Sharp and its cheeky Top 20 single, “Is She Really Going Out with Him?” Over the years, his inventive melodies and wry lyrics have drawn comparisons to the Gershwins and Cole Porter as he topped the charts in the golden age of MTV, picked up five Grammy nominations, composed several film soundtracks and released tributes to Duke Ellington and Louis Jordan. The new release, Fast Forward, is a globetrotting project featuring four sets of four songs each, recorded in four different cities – New York, New Orleans, Berlin and Amsterdam – with different teams of guest musicians. The tour features Jackson “as my own opening act,” playing a short solopiano set before bringing out a full band that includes longtime collaborator Graham Maby on bass, guitarist Teddy Kumpel (Rickie Lee Jones, Feist) and drummer Doug Yowell (Suzanne Vega, Ari Hest). series sponsor

Other recent projects include a memoir, Thanks for the Money, cited by Entertainment Weekly as “a clever, much-needed antidote to the age of celebrity book deals.” On the Hollywood side, McHale has carried comedic and dramatic roles in the supernatural thriller Deliver Us From Evil, the romantic comedy Blended alongside Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, Seth MacFarlane’s comedy smash TED, The Informant with Matt Damon and Spy Kids: All the Time in the World. His other TV work has included hosting the ESPY Awards and the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.

SHERYL CROW: BE MYSELF TOUR WITH AARON LEE TASJAN
Tuesday, July 11 at 7:30PM | The Palladium Performance Sponsored by: Old Town Design Group Chart-topping singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow returns to the Palladium with new material that recalls her pop-rock roots. The nine-time Grammy® Award winner has just released her ninth studio album, Be Myself, an 11-song collection that sees her reuniting with the writing and recording partners who helped craft such hits as “Everyday is a Winding Road” and “My Favorite Mistake.” Crow has sold more than 35 million albums worldwide since her breakthrough in the ’90s with “All I Wanna Do,” “Soak Up the Sun” and other tunes that remain in regular rotation on adult alternative radio. She dabbled in country music with the 2013 album Feels Like Home and a 2014 tour with Rascal Flatts, but last fall she returned to writing “good old-school Sheryl Crow tunes.” “I really wanted to get back to how I got started on my second record and third record,” she says of the new album. “I wanted to revisit that sound and that feeling. It was a complete blast and the most effortless thing I've ever done.” Opening the show will be Nashville-based folk-rocker and guitar whiz Aaron Lee Tasjan, whose all-American songwriting and storytelling have been likened to John Prine, Tom Petty and Todd Snider. series sponsor

ABOUT THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK FOUNDATION The mission of the Great American Songbook Foundation is to inspire and educate by celebrating the Great American Songbook. The beautiful melodies and thoughtful lyrics created by the musical masterminds of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood during the first half of the twentieth century represent the “golden age” of American popular music. The Great American Songbook Foundation carries out its unique mission to preserve America’s rich musical legacy in numerous ways: The Songbook Archives houses physical artifacts such as sheet music, recordings, and personal papers of songwriters including Meredith Willson (THE MUSIC MAN), Johnny Burke (“Swinging on a Star”), Gus Kahn (“It Had to be You”), and Hy Zaret (“Unchained Melody”). The Songbook Exhibit Gallery presents rotating interactive exhibits that share the history, music, and culture of the Songbook. The Songbook Academy® is a national program for high school singers, and is the only performing arts intensive dedicated to the music of the Songbook. PERFECT Harmony provides music therapy programming to individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other neurodegenerative conditions. The Songbook Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to the Great American Songbook by inducting a new class each year. A permanent exhibit honoring the people who created this extraordinary music is located in the Shiel Sexton Songbook Lounge on the Palladium’s Gallery level.
Visit the Songbook Exhibit Gallery! Located on the Gallery level of the Palladium Hours: Monday – Friday, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM The Gallery is also open prior to performances in the Songbook and Jazz Series and select additional performances at the Palladium. /SongbookFoundation
