WELCOME FRIENDS, Fall is a wonderful time here in Central Indiana, and as the weather turns cooler, the concert season is heating up. Look what we have in store here at the Center: legendary vocalists Johnny Mathis, Gladys Knight and the Righteous Brothers; acclaimed singer-songwriters Elvis Costello and Jason Mraz; British comedy genius John Cleese; top classical flute duo Sir James and Lady Galway; genre-shattering violin virtuoso Damien Escobar; family fun with the Fourth Wall; and a centennial salute to the rich cultural legacy of the Harlem Renaissance, Harlem 100 featuring Mwenso & the Shakes. But did you know the Center also offers a range of educational and experiential opportunities for people of all ages? Our Peanut Butter & Jam concerts and weekly Child & Adult Music Classes introduce preschoolers to the performing arts. Elementary school groups visit the Palladium for Science of Light & Sound, a fun physics lesson aligned with state education standards. Our KAR Front Seat program brings high school and college music students into preconcert sound checks for Q&As with top touring artists. Adults love our book club, lectures, and vocal, ukulele and comedy classes. And there’s much more. These performances and education programs embody our mission “to engage and inspire the Central Indiana community through enriching arts experiences,” and none of this work would be possible without the support of generous sponsors and donors. If you’d like to join our cause, just turn to Page 29 to learn how to make a convenient tax-deductible gift to the Center on your smartphone. We’re grateful to have you as a patron. Thanks for being here, and enjoy the performance!

Gladys Empress Knight of Soul Gladys Knight returns to the Palladium

T Gladys Knight

he great ones endure, and Gladys Knight has long been one of the greatest. Few singers over the past 50 years have matched her artistry and achievement: Seven Grammy awards, No. 1 hits across the Pop, Gospel, R&B and Adult Contemporary charts, and continuing success in film, television and live performance. Currently on a two-month fall tour that takes her from the Midwest through the South and up the East Coast, Knight will perform Nov. 20 at the Palladium, her first Center Presents appearance since 2014.

In the meantime, the “Empress of Soul” has continued to surprise fans, returning to her roots for the inspirational album Where My Heart Belongs – which won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Gospel Album – then following it up with the beat-heavy “Just a Little,” her first mainstream dance single in nearly two decades. In February, she sang the National Anthem to kick off Super Bowl LIII in her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. Knight is keeping busy and enjoying her multi-generational fan base, she told Billboard in a September interview. “To have people come in such numbers to my shows now … I don’t put it to my glory,” she said. “I feel like there’s a spiritual movement that’s being put in place for me to be in front of them. I give them the music that fans made popular, but I try to formulate it so they get a loving message out of the music. It’s more than just performing a song. It’s a way for us to communicate, to lift people up, to come together, get down and have fun.” Knight was just 4 years old when she began performing gospel music at Atlanta’s Mount Mariah Baptist Church and guested with the Morris Brown College Choir. Three years later, she won the grand prize on Ted Mack’s The Original Amateur Hour, midcentury precursor of American Idol. The following year, her mother Elizabeth Knight assembled a group consisting of Gladys, her brother Bubba, her sister Brenda and her cousins William and Elenor Guest. They called themselves “the Pips” in honor of their cousin and manager, James “Pip” Woods. In 1959, Brenda and Elenor left the group, replaced by cousin Edward Patten and friend Langston George. The group was renamed Gladys Knight & the Pips, and following George’s departure in 1962, the classic lineup was in place. The group released its first album in 1960 when Knight was just 16, and signed with Motown Records in 1966. With Knight singing lead and The Pips providing lush (Continued...)

harmonies and graceful choreography, the group’s early hits included “Every Beat of My Heart,” “Letter Full of Tears,” “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” – the label’s top single up to that point, with 2.5 million in sales – and “If I Were Your Woman,” the million-selling title song of their first No. 1 album. That success set the stage for an amazing run in the mid-1970s. Signing to Buddah Records in 1972, the group soon released the No. 1 smash “Midnight Train to Georgia,” considered by many to be their signature song. Close behind were Top 10 hits “I’ve Got to Use My Imagination,” “Best Thing to Ever Happen to Me” and “Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye).” The group’s Curtis Mayfield-produced soundtrack for the romantic comedy Claudine, starring Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones, was nominated for an Academy Award and spawned another Top 10 single, “On and On.” There was even a short-lived NBC variety show, The Gladys Knight & the Pips Show. In the ’80s, the group continued to produce hits for the Columbia and MCA labels but eventually disbanded. Knight’s post-Pips career already had begun with a bang when she teamed with Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Dionne Warwick on “That’s What Friends Are For,” penned by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager. The charity single became the top seller of 1986 in the United States, raising over $3 million for AIDS research and prevention and winning Grammys for Song of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Knight’s acting career has included starring roles in the smash Broadway musical Smokey Joe’s Café and the CBS comedy series Charlie & Co. with Flip Wilson, as well as appearances on Benson, The Jeffersons, The Jamie Foxx Show, Dancing with the Stars, 30 Rock and Empire. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and, with the Pips, is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She told her life story in the 1997 autobiography Between Each Line of Pain and Glory. She currently lives with her family in Las Vegas, where her four-year run at The Flamingo was called “the number-one show on the Strip” and was followed by an engagement at the Tropicana Hotel, which for a time renamed its 1,100-seat theater in her honor. She has continued her humanitarian and philanthropic work for such organizations as American Diabetes Association, the American Cancer Society and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
