IT’S SHOWTIME!

This show is for you, so please enjoy the performance.

WELCOME FRIENDS, The holiday season is upon us, and it’s always a special time of year here at the Center. Outside on Carter’s Green, the Carmel Christkindlmarkt (through Dec. 24) brings an extra twinkle to our campus, along with great food, beverages, handcrafted gift items, live music and skating sessions on The Ice (through early March). Inside our venues, the Center and its Resident Companies offer warm welcomes and compelling performances. Our Center Presents events include the Ascension St. Vincent Holiday Series, featuring the Minneapolis men’s vocal ensemble Cantus (Dec. 7) with a program of traditional songs and stories; Postmodern Jukebox (Dec. 13) with their retro reinterpretations of popular holiday tunes; and a perennial favorite, saxophonist Dave Koz and Friends (Dec. 15), with a holiday roadshow featuring singer-songwriters Jonathan Butler and Melissa Manchester, among other guests. The seasonal fun actually begins earlier, Dec. 3, when Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra bring their Big Band Holidays show to the Palladium. Our Hoosier Village Songbook Series brings us two Broadway legends who have parlayed their triple-threat talents into ongoing careers in film and television as well as onstage: Rita Moreno (Dec. 6) and Ben Vereen (Jan. 18). Moreno is a member of the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame. Vereen, also a good friend of our Great American Songbook Foundation, is a noted advocate for the arts and arts education, as you can read in this issue’s cover story on Page 6. We continue into the New Year with Poland’s NFM Wroclaw Philharmonic (Jan. 23), the family-friendly Big Bubble Bonanza (Jan. 25 at the Tarkington) and trumpeter extraordinaire Chris Botti (Feb. 9). Thank you for spending part of your holiday season with us. We hope to see you again soon!

'keep the

arts alive' Inspiring the youth is a recurring role for ben vereen

7

The night before our phone

interview, Ben Vereen received a lifetime achievement award from New York’s Gold Coast Arts Center. “That always makes me a little nervous,” he said with his trademark hearty chuckle. “My life’s not over – I’m still here!”

Vereen’s Broadway resume alone is enough for multiple lifetimes: Wicked, Fosse, I’m Not Rappaport, Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, Grind, Jelly’s Last Jam and A Christmas Carol. His early-career breakout role in Pippin earned him both the Tony Award and the Drama Desk Award for Best Actor in a Musical. His film and TV credits include an Emmywinning role in the 1977 Roots miniseries that cemented his status as a household name. But yes, Vereen is still here and still as busy as he wants to be. In the past few years alone, he has starred opposite Richard Gere in the film Time Out of Mind and with Laverne Cox in the Fox TV reboot of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. 8

He has appeared in episodes of CBS’ Bull and Magnum P.I., Amazon’s Sneaky Pete and BET’s Tales, and he had a recurring role in Lee Daniels’ Fox series Star. He also is working on a new Broadway show with the working title Reflections, which will include new music by Stephen Schwartz. “If the opportunity presents itself, I am ready, let’s go,” he says. “I feel like Sammy Davis Jr. sometimes. Sammy would say, ‘Open your refrigerator door, I’ll give you 15 minutes.’” Candid anecdotes about famous friends like Davis and Shirley MacLaine (his castmates in the Bob Fosse film Sweet Charity) will be part of Vereen’s Jan. 18 performance at the Palladium. His current “Steppin’ Out” tour with his longtime piano combo includes career highlights and plenty of standards, plus new material and elements of his musical-in-progress. “I’m bringing you all the music that you allowed me to experience in my lifetime,” he says. “It’s a retrospective of my life on stage, and I also look forward.”

Vereen’s musical journey began in Brooklyn, where his love of performing was apparent from an early age. “I was a showoff. I was a ham around my family,” he recalls, breaking into that laugh again. “I used to sing in church with a quartet called the Sensational Twilights of Brooklyn – isn’t that a mouthful!”

Giving back can take many forms. Vereen makes a priority of working with young people, whether in a masterclass setting or just offering casual advice. Prior to his Carmel performance, he will participate in the Center’s KAR Front Seat program, which provides complimentary tickets to high school and college music students and brings them into the artist’s sound check to observe and ask questions.

"everybody i've come in contact with has nurtured me and encouraged me so i'm giving back."

He remains grateful to the teachers and others who spotted his talent and encouraged him to audition for M anh a t tan’s High School for the Performing Arts, where he began developing his craft. “Everybody I’ve come in contact with has nurtured me and encouraged me, and they still do,” he says. “So I’m giving back.”

Future generations, he says, need to make up for his generation’s shortcomings.

“We made promises about what we were going to do – make the world a better place – and we’re not doing a very good job,” he says. “We have to work with young people to make sure they don’t give up. We need to seed them and give them the tools they’ll need to make this a better world.” (Continued...)

9

"it's a retrospective of my life on stage, and i also look forward."

10

His most common advice to aspiring performers and artists: Look within for your success. “The first thing is to realize that they are in charge of their own careers,” he says. “You need agents, you need managers, but they are the ones who control it. They must continue to work on themselves and their art. We all have to do that.” Earlier this year, Vereen performed at a private fundraiser for the Great American Songbook Foundation, founded by his longtime friend Michael Feinstein. He also has performed at Feinstein’s cabaret clubs. “I’ve got to remind him of this: He used to come and play piano

at my house in Inglewood many years ago, before anybody knew about Michael Feinstein,” Vereen recalls. “He was gathering information, learning the music of the Gershwins. He was putting himself together.” Another passion for Vereen is working with the advocacy group Americans for the Arts, which includes lobbying members of congress and other officials to maintain public support for arts and arts education. “We’re facing a government that looks like it wants to cut the arts away from our country, and we can’t let that happen, so we need to hold the line,” he says. “This is for our children that we do this, to keep the arts alive.” - By Scott Hall

Dance Discovery Class: Napoleon Dynamite December 3 | 6:30PM At the Tarkington Fifteen years ago we were introduced to an unlikely cinematic hero, Napoleon Dynamite. To this day, we can’t forget his surprising freestyle dance at the movie’s climax – a scene that helped cement the film as a pop culture classic! In this Dance Discovery session, we will learn Napoleon’s dance routine, mastering his classic moves “Backwards Wolverine Claw Shuffle,” “Shoot That Basketball Without Looking,” “Bird Flap” and “Jazzy Slither.” Bring your ChapStick, tots and “Vote for Pedro” shirt to learn some impressive new skills! Peanut Butter & Jam: Melchior Marionettes December 14 | 10:30AM At the Studio Theater Back by popular demand! Join us for a fast-paced, entertaining cabaret of handcrafted marionettes. Children and adults will delight in the hilarious antics of the marionettes and the skill of the puppeteers. Everyone will want to sing along with the Melchior Marionettes and enjoy the holiday classics and favorites. Tickets are only $10 per child, with two free adult admissions included – perfect for parents and grandparents! Dance Discovery Class: Broadway Janaury 7 | 6:30PM At the Palladium “They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway.” A fusion of ballet, modern and jazz dance, the Broadway style of movement can advance plotlines and character development in a way that dialogue alone cannot. In this Dance Discovery session, we’ll learn a little about the history of Broadway dance, then we’ll get our Fosse on and try out a few movements and steps. We might even try out some of the same moves Ben Vereen danced in his numerous Broadway appearances. Peanut Butter & Jam: Jefferson Street Parade Band Janaury 18 | 10:30AM At the Palladium Raucous, lively, colorful and packed with outstanding musicians, this thrilling marching band digs into rhythms from Mexico, Cuba, West Africa, New Orleans, Eastern Europe and Latin America. The unique instrumentation and fun-filled performance will have you marching and stomping all the way home! Kids and adults are encouraged to bring their own noise-making devices. 32

Your support provides performing arts education for all ages! Alongside the world-class arts and entertainment events we present at our three venues, a vital part of the Center’s mission is our robust menu of educational and outreach programming for patrons of all ages. Examples include: • The Saturday morning Peanut Butter & Jam sessions, which introduce preschoolers to the joy of live music and the performing arts • The KAR Front Seat program, which brings high school and college music students into touring artists’ sound checks to observe, ask questions and learn about life as a professional performer • Educational videoconferences for schools around the state • The Palladium Bookies, an engaging book club and discussion group for readers interested in arts-related issues • Budget-friendly classes and experiential opportunities for older youth and adults, including Dance Discovery, Ukulele and Intro to Stand-Up Comedy During the 2018-2019 Season, the Center presented education and outreach activities for more than 2,125 youth and 2,393 adults in Hamilton, Marion, Boone, Hendricks, Hancock, Grant, Morgan, Tippecanoe, Putnam, Madison, Howard, Delaware, Clinton, Johnson, Fulton, and Monroe counties.
