A SPECIAL ISSUE OF APPLAUSE We appreciate your support of the Center for the Performing Arts and your patience as we work to provide alternative programming during the pandemic and schedule the 2020-2021 Center Presents Season sponsored by Allied Solutions. As noted in our recent email to subscribers, because of continuing public health concerns and the resulting slowdown in the broader concert industry, the Center is delaying the start of the Center Presents performance season until early 2021. An initial schedule and on-sale dates will be announced in January. Several concerts rescheduled for this fall will be moved to future dates, and ticketholders will be contacted to explore their options. The new season will not be organized into traditional subscription packages, and venue capacity will be substantially reduced to allow physical distancing. Still, subscribers from the 2019-2020 season will maintain their subscriber status and benefits this season, including ticket discounts, presale access and priority seating. Though some seats might not be available for every performance, we will do our best to honor your preferences. Meanwhile, we will continue to fulfill our mission with a substantial schedule of small-scale events, Resident Company performances, educational programming and online offerings. We’re excited to connect with wider and more diverse audiences through new livestreaming initiatives and digital adaptations of popular programs. The Center’s education and enrichment programs for all ages – such as Faegre Drinker Peanut Butter & Jam family concerts, KAR Front Seat artist Q&As, Palladium Bookies book club and the Luminaries speaker series – will continue, whether onsite, online or in some combination of the two. Through Zoom teleconferencing, we are expanding the Classics in Context discussion series and launching a new JazzTalk series. Also premiering this fall is a livestreamed performance series, Live at the Center, featuring top
local and regional artists. The Center will continue to share news as well as online arts and entertainment opportunities through the twice-weekly Interlude e-newsletter. Meanwhile, more than 40 onsite events are scheduled in the Center’s venues from August through December, including performances by the resident Carmel Symphony Orchestra, Civic Theatre, Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre and Indiana Wind Symphony. For these events, the Center has developed an extensive set of protocols to enhance health and safety in our venues, including requirements for face coverings and physical distancing. PALLADIUM PLAYERS TABLE READING: THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 14 AT 7PM ET | THE STUDIO THEATER & ONLINE Join us for a casual reading and discussion of the themes in Act III of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest. For our reading, we are looking for "actors" (amateurs welcome!) to read one of eight characters. (Depending on who registers, we may need to read "gender-blind.�) What is a table reading? A table reading is an organized reading of a script in which the speaking parts, stage directions and scene headings are read out loud. In this case, participants can enjoy a sense of community while engaging with Oscar Wilde's wonderful language. Plays are written to be performed aloud and heard, not just read silently. CLASSICS IN CONTEXT: "CLASSICAL" VS. CLASSICAL MUSIC TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15 AT 7PM ET | ONLINE Wikipedia defines classical music as “art music produced or rooted in the traditions of Western culture, including both liturgical and secular music.” Within that larger scope is the Classical period of music, which lasted roughly from 1730 until 1815 and included the works of such composers as Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. This Classics in Context presentation will explore both definitions and try to clear up any confusion the terms might create for listeners. It’s classical versus “Classical.” The program will conclude with an opportunity to ask questions of Dr. Conrad. Learn more about Dr. Conrad here.

LUMINARIES: PLAYING WITH LIGHT: AN ARTIST'S JOURNEY TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 AT 2PM ET | THE PALLADIUM Arlon Bayliss will describe his journey as an artist working with light, from his early work as a glass artist to his public art commissions. His talk will be illustrated with images and video of various projects, including his recent work for the City of Carmel. He will not only show how the artworks come to life, but also emphasize the importance of collaboration and “play” in his creative process. Learn more about Arlon Bayliss here. 14

FAEGRE DRINKER PEANUT BUTTER & JAM: DORIN SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 AT 10:30AM ET | THE STUDIO THEATER Join us for live music by local trio Dorin. This family-friendly band engages both children and adults with catchy melodies and whimsical and heartwarming lyrics that reflect the special bond we have with the children we love. The band’s 2018 release Do You Dream of Me? is a collection of original love songs and lullabies. Designed for children ages 1-7, Peanut Butter & Jam sessions encourage young children to become engaged in the arts. Join us for these informal 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Saturday concerts. KAR FRONT SEAT WITH MICHAEL STIGGERS: BROADWAY ACTOR, SINGER, DANCER MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 AT 7PM ET | ONLINE Michael Stiggers Jr. is a 2009 Columbus State University Theatre Education graduate. After graduating, Michael began his professional journey in the Atlanta theater scene, working and growing with some of the city's best talent in regional productions including Born for This: The Bebe Winans Story (Alliance Theatre), Rent (Actor’s Express) and Les Miserables (Aurora Theatre). He now resides in New York City, where in 2017 he made his Broadway debut in the Tony Award-winning Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. Most recently in one of the biggest Broadway shows of all time, Disney's The Lion King, he performed eight nights a week with the ensemble in addition to understudying the lead role of Simba. Michael is also a voiceover artist with national campaigns and projects for Adidas, Uber, and Nickelodeon Network. Learn more about this event here.

Up next for discussion is The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company by Robert Iger. Alongside the world-class arts and entertainment events we present at our three venues, a vital part of the Center’s mission is our robust menu of educational and outreach programming for patrons of all ages. ABOUT THE CENTER The mission of the Center for the Performing Arts is to engage and inspire the Central Indiana community through enriching arts experiences. The Center for the Performing Arts is a nonprofit arts and education organization responsible for the operation and programming of a three-venue campus at Carmel’s City Center. Together, the Palladium, the Tarkington and the Studio Theater create a welcoming place for the community to engage with all forms of the performing arts. The campus also provides a home for the affiliated Great American Songbook Foundation and hosts six Resident Companies, along with other organizations that utilize the facilities for their events. Since opening in 2011, the Center’s venues have hosted over 2,500 performances for 960,000 patrons representing all 92 counties in Indiana, all 50 states and 25 nations. The campus also draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year for other public events. Each year the Center provides access to the arts for thousands of people of all ages – building community, enriching lives and inspiring minds young and old. Education and outreach initiatives include performing arts classes for children and adults and special programs for upcoming generations, such as the interactive Faegre Drinker Peanut Butter & Jam concert series for preschoolers, the Palladium PALS reading club, educational videoconferences for students around the state, and the Student Discount Ticket program, through which students can attend select performances for just $15.
