A SPECIAL ISSUE OF APPLAUSE We appreciate your support of the Center for the Performing Arts, and we hope you have been enjoying the bold new programming initiatives we have developed in order to continue pursuing our mission and bringing the arts to you during this unusual time. In conjunction with our schedule of performances and educational events, the Center has developed new digital programming and robust video and streaming capabilities that are making our programs more widely available than ever before to online audiences. The Center’s education and enrichment programs for all ages – such as Faegre Drinker Peanut Butter & Jam family concerts, KAR Front Seat artist Q&As, Palladium Bookies book club and the Luminaries speaker series – are continuing, whether onsite, online or in some combination of the two. Through Zoom teleconferencing, we have expanded our Classics in Context presentations and launched a new JazzTalk discussion series. Also new is a livestreamed performance series, Live at the Center, featuring top local and regional artists. Our Resident Companies also have begun offering performances and other programming online.
2021. An initial schedule and on-sale dates will be announced soon. Several concerts that had been rescheduled for the fall are being moved to future dates, and ticketholders will be contacted to explore their options. The new season will not be organized into traditional subscription packages, and venue capacity will be substantially reduced to allow physical distancing. Still, subscribers from the 2019-2020 season will maintain their subscriber status and benefits this season, including ticket discounts, presale access and priority seating. Though some seats might not be available for every performance, we will do our best to honor your preferences. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Patron Services staff at Tickets@TheCenterPresents.org or by phone at (317) 843-3800 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. We hope you and your loved ones enjoy a warm holiday season and the promise of a new year, and we’re glad the Center can play a role. Thank you again for your support.
For on-site events, the Center has developed an extensive set of protocols to enhance health and safety in our venues, including requirements for face coverings and physical distancing. More details on our COVID-19 policies are available on our website, TheCenterPresents.org. There, you also can join our email list for news updates, including the weekly Interlude e-newsletter about upcoming on-site and online programs. Because of the continuing public health concerns and the resulting slowdown in the touring concert industry, the Center is delaying the start of the Center Presents performance season until early 4

JAZZTALK: TRAILBLAZERS MONDAY, DECEMBER 8 AT 7PM ET | ONLINE
DSV is proud to support the Jazz Series. Enjoy the program!
In every genre of music, there are those who redefine the genre and even go beyond to influence others outside of their discipline. We may refer to these individuals as “trailblazers.” Trailblazers in jazz include clarinetist-saxophonist Sidney Bechet, trumpeter Miles Davis, pianist Dave Brubeck and drummer Elvin Jones. The discussion will explore why these artists’ contributions were so pivotal in the development of jazz, how their influence extended to other musicians and other forms of expression, and how today’s artists approach jazz performance differently because of their influence. PALLADIUM BOOKIES: THE CIRCUS IN WINTER MONDAY, DECEMBER 14 AT 7PM ET | THE PALLADIUM & ONLINE
LIVE AT THE CENTER: BASHIRI ASAD WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16 AT 7:30PM ET | ONLINE
Tis the season for curling up with a good book! We’re not in a hurry for winter, but we’d better find some enjoyable things to do inside. How about diving into some compelling fiction and then chatting about it later with other clever readers?
Describing himself as the “Everyday Soul Singer,” Indianapolis vocalist and songwriter Bashiri Asad has spent the past decade developing a sound he calls “IndySoul,” inspired by the classic music of Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Sam Cooke and Otis Redding. He has been a featured artist on WFYI’s Small Studio Sessions and at the Arts Council of Indianapolis’ annual Art & Soul Celebration. His recent albums include 2017’s A Girl Named Charlie and 2019’s The Way We Are featuring the band Be On It. #IndySoulLive
The Dec. 14 session of Palladium Bookies will take on The Circus in Winter by Cathy Day. Inspired by Day’s childhood in Peru, Indiana, the acclaimed collection of related stories explores the less glamorous side of showbiz, as the performers in a traveling circus spend their winters in a small Hoosier town. All you have to do is track down a copy and RSVP to Outreach@TheCenterPresents.org to find out how to join in – whether in person or online. Learn more about this event here.

PERFORMING ARTS CONNECT: THE BEATLES AT SHEA STADIUM: THE BEGINNING OF STADIUM ROCK THURSDAY, JANUARY 7 AT 7PM ET | THE PALLADIUM Celebrating a half century of the Beatles in America, this program focuses on the chart-topping band’s historic August 1965 concert at New York’s Shea Stadium, where John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr performed in front of 55,600 fans and were filmed for a network television special in what is considered the first outdoor stadium rock show. This program includes film clips, rare audio of the performance and discussion by Dave Schwensen, author of The Beatles at Shea Stadium: The Story Behind Their Greatest Concert. Schwensen will share little-known details about promoter Sid Bernstein’s dealings with the band, how the technology and security capabilities differed from modern stadium shows, how the Beatles secretly re-recorded some songs before the ABC broadcast, and how the event drew a capacity crowd with no paid advertising, only word of mouth. PERFORMING ARTS CONNECT: STORY OF A COMPOSER: GEORGE GERSHWIN TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 2 AT 7PM ET | THE PALLADIUM & ONLINE The 1920s saw a young nation, now free from war, able to develop its own rich culture. Major cities became centers for innovation in music, shunning European classicism for a freedom that was strictly American. It was from this ideal that the most well-known of American composers, George Gershwin, emerged. In this interactive Zoom program, participants will make guided comparisons between the classical and jazz idioms and apply these differences to the music of Gershwin in historical and social context, learning about many important works such as Porgy and Bess and Rhapsody in Blue. BRIDGE CAMPAIGN We hold steadfast that the arts are key to bringing joy, beauty, hope, laughter, education, entertainment and economic development in good times and in more trying times alike. In the midst of the Covid-19 crisis, the Center for the Performing Arts faces unique obstacles, and among those are financial concerns. And yet, our mission continues – perhaps more important than ever, in fact – but through new forms of delivery, media and outreach to the community. Established to ensure the Center for the Performing Arts continues its mission to Central Indiana in spite of the Covid-19 crisis, these donors gave generously to the Bridge Campaign. And for that, a grateful community says thank you. 56
