A SPECIAL ISSUE OF APPLAUSE We appreciate your support of the Center for the Performing Arts, and we hope you have been enjoying the livestreams and other new offerings we have developed over the past year to continue fulfilling our mission and bringing the arts to you. The Center’s investment in video and online streaming capabilities is making our programs more widely available than ever before. Popular education and enrichment opportunities for all ages – such as Faegre Drinker Peanut Butter & Jam family concerts, KAR Front Seat artist Q&As, Palladium Bookies book club and the Luminaries speaker series – are continuing, whether onsite, online or in some combination of the two. Through Zoom teleconferencing, we have expanded our Classics in Context presentations and launched a new JazzTalk discussion series. Also new is a livestreamed performance series, Live at the Center, featuring top local and regional artists.

Despite the current pause in the touring concert industry, the Center continues to book performances for the upcoming 2021-2022 Season – including some new names as well as artists postponed during the past year. Dates will be announced this spring, and performances will be added throughout the season. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Patron Services staff at Tickets@TheCenterPresents.org or by phone at (317) 843-3800 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. As always, none of this work would be possible without the Center’s generous donors and sponsors, who have stepped up their support in trying times to ensure that the arts continue to provide entertainment, enlightenment and inspiration for the Central Indiana community and the world beyond. Thank you,

For on-site events, in cooperation with local authorities, the Center has developed a thorough set of protocols to enhance health and safety in our venues, including requirements for face coverings and physical distancing. More details on our COVID-19 policies are available on our website, TheCenterPresents.org. There, you also can join our email list for news updates, including the weekly Interlude e-newsletter about upcoming events on-site and online.

In this case, participants can enjoy a sense of community while engaging through the excerpts of the play and its various characters.

CENTER PRESENTS Fundamentally, blind embossing is the method of creating raised logos or characters without the use of ink for a dramatic statement. To us, print is the act of transforming your thoughts, feelings, and hard work into something tangible. Similarly, organizations like The Center for the Performing Arts do more than invite world class performers to Indiana, they create educational journeys to a broadened mindset and an open heart. And we’re proud to support them.

LUMINARIES: INDIANA'S AMAZING ROLE IN AMERICAN POPULAR MUSIC TUESDAY, MARCH 23 AT 2PM ET | THE PALLADIUM & ONLINE

LIVE AT THE CENTER: THE WARRIOR KINGS WEDNESDAY, MARCH 24 AT 7:30PM ET | ONLINE

From Hoagy Carmichael to Jimi Hendrix to John Mellencamp, Indiana has played an important role in American popular music. Louis Armstrong made his first recordings in 1923 at Gennett Records in Richmond. Jimi Hendrix played in Indiana a surprising five times, first as a struggling road musician, later as the biggest rock star America had ever produced. In this multimedia presentation, rock historian and college professor Randy Albright will share amazing stories that connect Indiana to popular music.

A “hard rock band with a dark blues soul,” the Warrior Kings recall the classic power trios of yesteryear while working toward a new rock sound for the 21st century. Crowned 2015 Midwest champions of the Hard Rock Rising Battle of the Bands, the group has performed on WISH-TV and Comcast’s Inside Tracks, and their music has been featured on WFYI’s Blues House Party. JAZZTALK: GREAT ENCOUNTERS TUESDAY, APRIL 13 AT 7PM ET | ONLINE CENTER PRESENTS FREE EVENT!

JazzTalk is a series of informal discussions about the masters of jazz and their enduring legacy, with hosts Todd Williams, nationally known saxophonist and music educator, and Doug Tatum, Vice President of Programming at the Center for the Performing Arts. Viewers can join in via Zoom and pose questions after the discussion.

LIVE AT THE CENTER: TOMMY ICARUS WEDNESDAY, APRIL 14 AT 7:30PM ET | ONLINE

Most jazz musicians have met someone who inspired them to action – to listen more, to practice their instrument more, and to pursue a career in music. Sometimes these experiences are comical, sometimes embarrassing or hurtful to one’s pride, but most times these encounters are awe-inspiring moments that motivate artists to be as great as their musical mentors. This discussion focuses on three artists whose stories explain the extraordinary beginnings of their great genius: Ben Webster, Art Blakey and Dizzy Gillespie.

Tommy Icarus is an alternative music singer-songwriter from Indianapolis, known for his smooth falsetto, layered harmonies and dynamic compositions. His 2016 debut album, Sailor and the Sea, was an intimate, folk-inspired journey, with found objects used as percussion. We Are Safe (2017) showcased a broader rock sound for a personal exploration of love, life and family. Musings from the Mind of Madness (2019) embraced an ’80s vibe, drawing inspiration from Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads and David Bowie.

INTRO TO STAND-UP COMEDY MONDAYS MAY 3-24 AT 6PM ET | THE STUDIO THEATER

LIVE AT THE CENTER: STARLITE LOUNGE THURSDAY, MAY 6 AT 7:30PM ET | ONLINE

This class is both a look at the history and evolution of stand-up comedy and a practical course that will cover joke mechanics and writing for standup as well as performance theory and practice. Over the course of the class, each student will write and practice a five-minute routine to perform for friends and family at the graduation show.

Starlite Lounge founders and chief songwriters Eric Carmichael and Nick Christie describe their music as the “Marion Sound,” inspired by “a land-locked world of car dealerships, high school basketball games, and empty lots … steeped in rich and harmonious melody, shimmery spring reverb, stereo classic-rock vibe, some move and some groove, and the occasional dual guitar solo for pomp and flare.” Rounding out the band – formerly known as Carmichael – are drummer Costin Ritter and keyboardist Jamie Mahan.

Cost: $90 (includes all four classes and graduation show) Recommended for ages 17 and up. Class is limited to 15 participants. A minimum of 10 students is required to conduct the class.

Click to explore TheSongbook.org Share Your Songbook The Songbook is a term that refers to music that has the power to last beyond the time it was written. By that definition, the Songbook is still being written today. Share your song, your story, or an album that has become a part of your own personal Songbook– the soundtrack of your life.

Just as the Songbook comforted families during the Great Depression, boosted morale during WWII and created unity during many other challenging world events throughout our history, we can be confident that the Songbook will continue to carry us through anything that tomorrow may bring. Until we can gather together and celebrate once again in person, keep the music playing in your house by engaging in the Songbook At Home. Click here to explore: TheSongbook.org. /SongbookFoundation

We hold steadfast that the arts are key to bringing joy, beauty, hope, laughter, education, entertainment and economic development in good times and in more trying times alike. In the midst of the Covid-19 crisis, the Center for the Performing Arts faces unique obstacles, and among those are financial concerns. And yet, our mission continues – perhaps more important than ever, in fact – but through new forms of delivery, media and outreach to the community. Established to ensure the Center for the Performing Arts continues its mission to Central Indiana in spite of the Covid-19 crisis, these donors gave generously to the Bridge Campaign. And for that, a grateful community says thank you.
