A SPECIAL ISSUE OF APPLAUSE We appreciate your support of the Center for the Performing Arts as we explore bold new programming initiatives while continuing to schedule the 2020-2021 Center Presents Season sponsored by Allied Solutions. As noted in our previous email to subscribers, because of continuing public health concerns and the resulting slowdown in the broader concert industry, the Center is delaying the start of the Center Presents performance season until early 2021. An initial schedule and on-sale dates will be announced in January. Several concerts rescheduled for this fall will be moved to future dates, and ticketholders will be contacted to explore their options. The new season will not be organized into traditional subscription packages, and venue capacity will be substantially reduced to allow physical distancing. Still, subscribers from the 2019-2020 season will maintain their subscriber status and benefits this season, including ticket discounts, presale access and priority seating. Though some seats might not be available for every performance, we will do our best to honor your preferences. Meanwhile, we continue to fulfill our mission with a substantial schedule of small-scale events, Resident Company performances, educational programming and online offerings. We’re excited to connect with wider and more diverse audiences through new livestreaming initiatives and digital adaptations of popular programs. The Center’s education and enrichment programs for all ages – such as Faegre Drinker Peanut Butter & Jam family concerts, KAR Front Seat artist Q&As, Palladium Bookies book club and the Luminaries speaker series – are continuing, whether onsite, online or in some combination of the two. Through Zoom teleconferencing, we are expanding the Classics in Context discussion series and launching a new JazzTalk series. Also new this fall is a livestreamed performance series, Live at the Center, 4

featuring top local and regional artists. The Center continues to share news as well as online arts and entertainment opportunities through the weekly Interlude e-newsletter. Meanwhile, many onsite events are scheduled in the Center’s venues through December, including performances by the resident Carmel Symphony Orchestra, Civic Theatre, Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre and Indiana Wind Symphony. For these events, the Center has developed an extensive set of protocols to enhance health and safety in our venues, including requirements for face coverings and physical distancing. More details on our COVID-19 policies are available on our website, TheCenterPresents.org. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Patron Services staff at Tickets@TheCenterPresents.org or by phone at (317) 843-3800 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. We hope you enjoy our upcoming programming, and we look forward to sharing more information about the Center Presents season in January. Thank you again for your support.

PERFORMING ARTS CONNECT: SONGWRITING 101: KACEY MUSGRAVES STYLE TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10 AT 7PM ET | THE PALLADIUM Nashville songwriter Harlan Howard described country music as “three chords and the truth,” and many songwriters use humor to address some of life’s most difficult truths. In this introductory workshop, museum educator and professional musician Adam Ollendorff will teach the fundamentals of songwriting, including form, theme and rhyme scheme. Using Zoom’s chat function, participants will share ideas and write an original song inspired by Kacey Musgraves’ comedic song, “Family Is Family,” written by Musgraves, Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne. Ollendorff has toured with Musgraves, performed with Willie Nelson, and written songs with Natalie Hemby and Maren Morris. The session is presented in support of the exhibit Kacey Musgraves: All of the Colors. Learn more about the event here. 14

Walter Landor memorably stated “Products are made in the factory, but brands are created in the mind.” And we couldn’t agree more. At Printing Partners, we look at the bigger picture. To us, print is the act of transforming your thoughts, feelings, and hard work into something tangible. Similarly, organizations like The Center for the Performing Arts do more than invite world class performers to Indiana, they create educational journeys to a broadened mindset and an open heart. CLASSICS IN CONTEXT: BEETHOVEN AND THE BASS CONNECTION WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11 AT 7PM ET | ONLINE Celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday with a presentation by internationally recognized principal bassist David Murray. Professor Murray will explore the relationship between Beethoven and virtuoso bassist Domenico Dragonetti. Though not close friends, they did play one of Beethoven’s cello sonatas together, and the fourth movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony begins with a recitative for cello and bass – which is said to have been played solo at the premiere by Dragonetti! Murray also will provide a general analysis of the Ninth Symphony and discuss Beethoven’s symphonic development leading up to the celebrated composition. As a bonus, Murray will perform an excerpt of the recitative on his bass. Learn more about this event here.

ABOUT THE CENTER The mission of the Center for the Performing Arts is to engage and inspire the Central Indiana community through enriching arts experiences. The Center for the Performing Arts is a nonprofit arts and education organization responsible for the operation and programming of a three-venue campus at Carmel’s City Center. Together, the Palladium, the Tarkington and the Studio Theater create a welcoming place for the community to engage with all forms of the performing arts. The campus also provides a home for the affiliated Great American Songbook Foundation and hosts six Resident Companies, along with other organizations that utilize the facilities for their events. The campus also draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year for other public events. Each year the Center provides access to the arts for thousands of people of all ages – building community, enriching lives and inspiring minds young and old. Education and outreach initiatives include performing arts classes for children and adults and special programs for upcoming generations, such as the interactive Faegre Drinker Peanut Butter & Jam concert series for preschoolers, the Palladium PALS reading club, educational videoconferences for students around the state, and the Student Discount Ticket program, through which students can attend select performances for just $15.

BRIDGE CAMPAIGN We hold steadfast that the arts are key to bringing joy, beauty, hope, laughter, education, entertainment and economic development in good times and in more trying times alike. In the midst of the Covid-19 crisis, the Center for the Performing Arts faces unique obstacles, and among those are financial concerns. And yet, our mission continues – perhaps more important than ever, in fact – but through new forms of delivery, media and outreach to the community. Established to ensure the Center for the Performing Arts continues its mission to Central Indiana in spite of the Covid-19 crisis, these donors gave generously to the Bridge Campaign. And for that, a grateful community says thank you. 56
