WELCOME TO THE CENTER!

Welcome to the 13th Center Presents Season at the Center for the Performing Arts! With support from our partner Allied Solutions, we have assembled an amazing schedule of more than 50 events throughout the coming year – with even more on the way.

Our main event for July is the annual Songbook Academy® music intensive, the flagship education program of our sister organization, the Great American Songbook Foundation. This is one of the most enjoyable times of year on the Center’s campus, as we play host for a week to 40 of the nation’s best and brightest teen singers and a mentoring team of educators and guest artists that this year includes Broadway stars Ali Stroker, Andréa Burns, Nasia Thomas and Liz Callaway.

We often learn that these young people are not only gifted singers and performers, but also tend to be positive leaders in their home communities. One such student is Alexander Kim, a high school senior from the Los Angeles area who is participating in the Songbook Academy for the second straight year. You’ll enjoy reading the cover story about how his experience in last year’s program gave him a greater sense of self-confidence and inspired him to take on new challenges.

As usual, the Songbook Academy is highlighted by three events for public audiences: the Public Masterclass, with 10 randomly selected participants receiving real-time critiques from Feinstein and the Tony Award-winning Stroker; the Songbook Showcase, when each of the 40 national finalists enjoys a solo turn in the spotlight; and the culminating Songbook Academy in Concert, featuring all 40 singers performing in choral numbers, small group ensembles and featured solos to celebrate their growth over the course of the week. You can learn more about the events, and all the interesting people involved, in the pages that follow.

In August, the Center Presents Season hits full stride with a special acoustic show by chart-topping rock band Daughtry, a solo appearance by singer-songwriter Ben Harper, and the long-awaited return of legendary jazz fusion band Spyro Gyra, coinciding with the inaugural Carmel Jazz Fest.

Special thanks to all the volunteers, donors and community partners who make it possible for us to share these exceptional arts experiences with you. We hope to see you often this season at the Center!

Singing a New TuNe

THE SONGBOOK ACADEMY HAS BEEN A TRANSFORMATIVE EXPERIENCE FOR ALUM ALEXANDER

6

With an interest sparked by his older sister’s love of musical theater, Alexander Kim knew about the Great American Songbook long before he heard about the Songbook Academy.

“Rodgers and Hammerstein, Sondheim, Cole Porter, Gershwin – I loved it all as a child,” says the rising high school senior from Laguna Niguel, California, south of Los Angeles. “These melodies and lyrics are timeless, as cool and relevant now as they were (so many) years ago.”

Kim grew up taking voice lessons and performing, but in his teen years, multiple challenges seemed to arise at once. The pandemic put his theater activities on hold. His adolescent voice was getting lower. And his family moved from North Carolina to Southern California, where he had to find his niche in a new environment.

“With COVID halting everything, my voice changing, moving cross-country, and just being a teenager in general, I was kind of lost when it came to music,” the 17-year-old recalls. “I enjoyed musical theater but wasn’t sure it was what I wanted for a future career. I was trying to fit in to my new school in SoCal. I was relearning how to sing with my new, very low voice. I had a lot going on that I hadn’t figured out.”

Kim was intrigued when his voice teacher told him about the Songbook Academy, the Great American Songbook Foundation’s annual music intensive for high school singers. He liked the idea of spending a week learning more about the music he loved, under the guidance of top instructors, professional performers and other entertainment industry mentors. He submitted his application and audition videos and was selected by the judges as a Top 40 finalist for last year’s Academy.

The experience changed his life in ways he never imagined.

“Songbook Academy helped me find myself,” he says. “For the first time in my life, I was surrounded by people passionate about music, who embraced me for just me, and I can’t emphasize how much that support boosted my self-confidence. … This has carried over into things this year that I never would have had the confidence to try before Songbook Academy.”

Growing up in the South as a grandchild of immigrants, Kim preferred music and dancing to the more socially acceptable world of athletics, though he is a multisport athlete. He learned to keep his head down and avoid appearing vulnerable, lest he incur the judgement of his peers.

7

“I was just not accustomed to the welcoming community I met at Songbook Academy,” he recalls. “So if I seemed diffident or closed-off at the beginning of the week, I definitely was, because that’s how I’ve had to be to survive. Catherine Walker, my vocal coach, not only was amazing at helping me with the technical aspects of singing, but she gently prodded me to open up emotionally with my group as well. You might say she helped me ‘find my voice’ on so many levels.”

When he returned to his high school last fall, Kim founded a club called Music&Memory, organizing students to perform vocal and instrumental music for residents at senior living centers. Knowing that familiar music can have an especially therapeutic effect on older adults with memory issues, the group tailors its performances to match the tastes of each audience. “What I am most proud of is how this club has brought together a bunch of high school musicians to focus on the common goal of helping others,” he says. “I have also learned the power of performance – the ability to bring joy to others through music. What seems like a modest musical act brings happiness and delight to the faces of our senior friends, who sing and dance along with us.”

This year, Kim auditioned again for the Songbook Academy and was thrilled to make the Top 40 cut once more.

“I would tell anyone applying that it is such a privilege to work with these amazing professionals, who are incredibly talented and have their full attention and expertise focused on you to help you grow as an artist,” he says. “And then throw on top of that being surrounded by 40 amazingly talented teenagers who love to do what you do, too.”

The Academy is just one highlight of a busy summer for Kim. Among other projects, he is working at the Orange County campus of the City Of Hope Cancer Center, helping to launch a therapeutic music program and studying its impact on patients. He also is a student director at a two-week theater camp for K-8 students, as well as a counselor at another weeklong camp for students with special needs.

Meanwhile, he is looking ahead to an exciting senior year and starting to apply to colleges.

“I don’t know what the future holds,” he says, “but I plan to keep singing and inspiring others to explore music.”

Her original pop music has been called “soaring” (Nexus Music Blog), “astonishing” (Rising Artists) and “dreamy” (Neon Music). Her most recent pop EP, Friction, was released in 2021. Eleri studied songwriting at Berklee College of Music before transferring and graduating from the Boston Conservatory with a BFA in Musical Theater and an emphasis in Songwriting, which shows itself clearly in the way she has taken on the Sondheim canon. www.eleriward.com @eleriward

ABOUT THE CENTER

The mission of the Center for the Performing Arts is to engage and inspire the Indiana community through enriching arts experiences.

The Center is a nonprofit arts and education organization responsible for the operation and programming of a three-venue campus at Carmel’s City Center. Together, the Palladium, the Tarkington and the Studio Theater create a welcoming place for the community to engage with all forms of the performing arts. The campus also provides a home for the affiliated Great American Songbook Foundation and hosts six Resident Companies, along with other organizations that utilize the facilities for their events. Since opening in 2011, the Center’s venues have hosted over 3,100 performances and over more than 1.3 million patrons representing all 92 counties in Indiana, all 50 states and 30-plus nations. The campus also draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year for other public events.

Each year the Center provides access to the arts for thousands of people of all ages – building community, enriching lives and inspiring minds young and old. Education and outreach initiatives include performing arts classes for children and adults and special programs for upcoming generations, such as the interactive Peanut Butter & Jam concert series for preschoolers, the Palladium PALS reading club, educational videoconferences for students around the state, and the Student Discount Ticket program, through which students can attend select performances for just $15.

ABOUT THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK FOUNDATION

The mission of the Great American Songbook Foundation is to inspire and educate by celebrating the Great American Songbook.

America has a rich tradition of creating music—classical, folk, pop, jazz, rock. The Great American Songbook consists of enduring standards, the songs that are played and sung over and over by multiple generations. These songs have a timeless meaning and resonance, whether they are days or decades old.

Based at the Palladium, the Great American Songbook Foundation is affiliated with the Center for the Performing Arts and is one of a handful of worldwide Cultural Affiliates of the Los Angeles-based GRAMMY Museum®. The Foundation carries out its unique mission to inspire and educate by celebrating the Great American Songbook in numerous ways:

• The Songbook Library & Archives houses documents, images and historic artifacts of songwriters Meredith Willson ( The Music Man) and Harold Arlen ( The Wizard of Oz) and artists like Natalie Cole, Andy Williams, and Sammy Davis, Jr.

• The Songbook Exhibit Gallery – free and open to the public – is a multimedia educational center with rotating exhibits exploring history and popular culture through the lens of music.

• The Songbook Academy ® is a national summer music intensive that provides pre-professional training, world class mentorship and performance experience for aspiring high school singers.

• Perfect Harmony is a music resource that provides care partners with generational music and activities to engage older adults through a shared music experience.

• The Songbook Hall of Fame recognizes singers, songwriters and other artists who have made significant contributions to the Great American Songbook, with a new class inducted each year.

EXHIBIT GALLERY HOURS: Monday-Friday, 10am-4pm
