DEAR FRIENDS, Autumn is here...my favorite time of the year! Not only because the leaves are in full blazing colors but also because the arts are in full swing here at the Center for the Performing Arts! In September, as we kicked-off the 2013-14 season presented by St.Vincent Health, we welcomed classical pianist Lang Lang, the Governor’s Arts Awards, country star Craig Morgan, and the spectacular Buddy Guy (to name just a few.) In this edition of Applause!, we take a look at past performances and showcase the musical lineup ahead. No matter the season, the Center has a diverse mix of musical styles and performers from around the world. Take a few minutes to discover the season inside these pages or go to the Center’s website for additional details www.TheCenterPresents.org. Consider gathering your friends for a performance you can share together. You and your friends will marvel at elaborate productions and the artistry showcased in the Franklin College Holiday Shows: Jim Brickman, Dave Koz, Celtic Woman, and Trace Adkins Christmas Show. The lineup offers an eclectic mix of celebratory moments. Turn to page 10 to discover more about our unique group events. This edition also gives us a chance to chat with the 2013 Great American Songbook High School Vocal Competition winners. Youth Ambassador Julia Goodwin is in awe of the academy experience and the opportunity to work with Michael Feinstein. Not only is Julia serving as the Songbook’s Youth Ambassador, our community is still talking about her stirring rendition of “Dream A Little Dream of Me.” Enjoy photos from this year’s competition and encourage the teen vocalists in your life to enter the 2014 vocal competition. In just two and a half short years, the Center for the Performing Arts has served almost 400,000 patrons from 13 countries, 47 states, and all 92 counties in the great state of Indiana. Our stages have seen hundreds of amazing performances – from YoYo Ma to Tony Bennett to Sheryl Crow. We know you are finding inspiration in the performing arts. Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm, and as you continue to enjoy the beautiful Fall season, I invite you to celebrate it with friends and family at the Center for the Performing Arts!

IN THE NEWS ‘Social Seats’ pairs Palladium Classical concerts with special guests Printing Partners and the Center for the Performing Arts are launching a new social media program to raise the visibility of the Printing Partners Classical Series at the Palladium. “Social Seats” utilizes Twitter and Facebook to showcase concerts by Lang Lang, Deborah Voigt, Sir James Galway with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Pinchas Zukerman with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Jean-Yves Thibaudet with Bahia Orchestra Project, Haifa Symphony Orchestra of Israel, and Midori. “We are looking forward to creating an exciting conversation focused on classical music,” said Michael O’Brien, co-owner of Printing Partners. “Our goal is to bring together the buzz of social media with the energy of classical music. We are creating an ongoing conversation and invite the entire community to join in.”

Last Chance to See “Roaring Hot 20’s Jazz” Exhibit Large urban jazz powerhouses of the 1920’s, including Chicago and New Orleans, were not the only cities dancing to the syncopated rhythms of “hot” jazz. Indiana musicians heard the new sound and not only played it, but influenced the music for decades to come. This FREE Exhibit is located on the gallery level of the Palladium and is open Mon. - Fri. 10am - 4pm and 60 minutes prior to all Songbook & Jazz Performances, but hurry this exhibit leaves at the end of the year.
Governor’s Arts Awards Recap Indiana Governor Mike Pence, Honorary Chair First Lady Karen Pence, and the Indiana Arts Commission honored six Hoosiers during an awards ceremony on Sept. 26 at the Center for the Performing Arts. The 2013 Governor’s Arts Awards program marked the 40th anniversary of the event and the fourth time the Governor and IAC hosted the event outside the city of Indianapolis.
“Social Seats” offers several ways for the public to become involved. High profile social media enthusiasts will be invited to attend Printing Partners Classical Series concerts, sharing the experience with their followers leading up to the night of the concert. On the evening of the performance, the “Social Seats” guests will tweet and post highlights.
“I am honored to recognize this year’s Governor’s Arts Awards recipients for their contributions to the state and the arts,” Pence said. “These talented and passionate Hoosiers further strengthen the culture of Indiana through their individual work, commitment to community development, and enthusiasm and support for the arts in their many forms.”
Additionally, “Social Seats” will offer two seats to the general public to encourage guests to share news on their personal social media channels. Guests of the “Social Seats” program will be highlighted on the Twitter accounts @CarmelPalladium and @PPartnersIndy, and the Facebook pages of both organizations.
The 2013 recipients of the Indiana Governor’s Arts Awards include: John Hiatt, musician, Christel DeHaan, philanthropist, Cynthia Hartshorn, music educator & vocalist, Mark Kruzan, Bloomington Mayor, Sydney Pollack, producer, director & actor (posthumous), Traditional Arts Indiana, arts organization.

YET ANOTHER AMAZING YEAR Feinstein Vocal Competition winners remember and reflect
From right: Kyrie Courter (2nd), Julia Goodwin (1st), Melida Rodriquez (3rd), and Sam Pomales (3rd).
Now that the dust has settled since the 2013 Great American Songbook High School Vocal Competition Finals, presented by the Feinstein Initiative and held July 26, at the Palladium in Carmel, Ind. — what impact did the event have on its founder and winners? “I continue to be amazed at the level of talent these young singers possess each year. This year was interesting in that each of the ten finalists brought something very unique to the competition. They were all strong in different areas.” said Michael Feinstein, founder of the Initiative and artistic director of the Center for the Performing Arts, regarding the singers who won the top three places during the finals which capped a five-day academy of workshops and master classes. As far as his assessment of each winner Feinstein said, “Julia Goodwin (1st place) possesses a musicality and vocal maturity that is rare in someone her age. Kyrie Courter (2nd place) has a beautiful and versatile voice. She showed range with her song selections, from a jazz standard to a soulful ballad. Melinda Rodriquez (tied for 3rd place) is a true jazz singer. She has an understanding of the music that is unique in someone of her age. Sam Pomales (tied for 3rd place) is an accomplished instrumentalist, which has helped him to develop musically as a singer. He has a deep passion and understanding for this music.” 15-year old Goodwin, a Baldwinsville, New York native, received $3,000 and the opportunity to perform with Feinstein and others throughout the year. Also, she has assumed the title of Great American Songbook Youth Ambassador. Reflecting on her win, the now sophomore at CW Baker High School said, “It was so surprising — I am still shocked that I won because everyone was so talented.”

Goodwin, who wowed the Finals audience when she sang “Dream a Little Dream of Me” and “Feeling Good,” also said that she valued everything she learned. “The entire experience was so educational. I learned how to tell stories through lyrics and so much about vocal technique from the mentors who taught me a lot. It was an unbelievable opportunity. I look forward to sharing music from the Great American Songbook with people of my age.” Kyrie Courter, who received $2,000, said, “Winning second place in the competition felt amazing and shocking! The entire competition was a very interesting experience. From regionals to finals, I had no idea what I was going to go through. Chris Lewis (Initiative Education Director) told us all what to expect, but I honestly don’t think that I was prepared for the huge change I was about to go through. I’ve grown so much as a performer and a musician from this competition, and being able to see that growth is such a blessing.” “Because of this competition, music from the Great American Songbook has found a special place in my heart. The way that the music speaks to every listener’s soul is astounding, and performing it is such a privilege. I will definitely continue to perform and listen to these beautiful and historic tunes. I’d be crazy not to!” said Chicago, Ill. native Courter, who sang “Taking a Chance on Love” and “I (Who Have Nothing).” Melinda Rodriquez, of Miami, Fla. and Sam Pomales from Springfield, Ohio tied for third place in the competition and were both awarded $1,500 toward music education. Rodriquez, who impressed the judges with her renditions of “Blue Skies” and “Autumn Leaves” said, “It was an honor to even be compared to a musician as great as Sam. His voice is like velvet, and his performance was touching. If I had to choose to share it with anyone else, I would still pick Sam,” adding, “I have grown so much as a person, a friend, a musician and a performer over the entire process. It was such an honor getting to work with professionals like Sandi Patty, Sylvia McNair, Jane Monheit and Jim Caruso and obviously
Michael Feinstein. I experienced moments that I will remember forever. This experience meant the world to me.” Pomales, who stood out with his interpretations of “Fly Me to the Moon” and “The Summer Knows” remembered that, “I didn’t think I had a chance. Everyone was so amazing and so talented and I felt like the underdog. I hadn’t gotten to sing a lot growing up so it was a wonderful surprise.” As for his tie with Rodriquez he said, “Obviously I had no idea how it was going to go down. Simply getting the tie with her was amazing because she was fabulous. It was a huge honor. I felt very blessed.” Regarding how it felt to perform on the massive Palladium stage in front of 1,600 people Pomales said, “Right before I went up I experienced a sudden shock of terror. I was freaking out like crazy but in the moment when I stepped into the spotlight — something just clicked and everything just kind of fell away — and it was just me, the pianist, and the music. It was the most magical moment of my entire life.” Feinstein thinks that this year’s effort set the bar even higher for future competitions. Looking back, he said, “Not only were the regionals successful, but the final week of competition was the best and most comprehensive we have had yet. Besides the master classes and workshops with our guest mentors, the students had the opportunity to explore the MFI Archives and collections to learn about the songwriters who created the music of the Great American Songbook. I am so proud of how the competition continues to grow and develop. I know that Chris (Lewis) and the MFI team have already begun to plan and improve upon the event for next year as we expand to more states in 2014.” For more information about the Michael Feinstein Initiative and 2014 Great American Songbook Vocal Competition visit FeinsteinInitiative.org . GIVE THE GIFT OF SONG! “It was a week of many first-time experiences for me and a life changing event!” – Melinda Rodriguez “Learning from Michael Feinstein about how to interpret this music has been amazing!” – Maya Jacobson “The mentors brought out the best in all of us.” – Brandon Ocasio These quotes from students who participated in the Great American Songbook High School Vocal Academy and Competition tell an amazing story. They sang their hearts out as they interpreted the music that many of their grandparents enjoyed as teenagers. They built relationships with other talented singers and mentors from coast to coast. They made memories bursting with music and, in the process, developed character, confidence, and an appreciation for history. The Initiative has big plans for the future of the Vocal Competition. One of our goals is to expand the Competition to include all 50 states by 2015 so that more students can have this once in a lifetime experience. This can only be accomplished with support from people like you! Visit FeinsteinInitiative.org/Support or call the Office of Development at 317.819.3528 to make a charitable gift to support the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative and the Vocal Competition.

BEYOND SOCIAL EVENTS
Many young professionals have heard the news about The Scene and have joined to enjoy the events and reap the benefits of membership, but also to be a part of something impactful in the community.
Scene member Alicia Wanker says, “In addition to the networking value and the opportunity to enjoy multiple performances at a great ticket rate, my Scene membership has allowed me to get more involved at central Indiana’s newest cultural hub that’s right in my backyard!” Scene members are active in supporting the Center’s Peanut Butter & Jam sessions. Designed for children ages 1 through 7, Peanut Butter & Jam sessions encourage young children to become active and enthusiastic listeners through music, dance and games. The informal Saturday morning sessions are fun, lively and educational, including a half hour concert followed by a 15-minute instrument petting zoo. Scene members are invited to help plan, promote and support the series. Participants are also invited to take part in volunteer opportunities such as assisting at events, or serving on committees. “The arts challenge our perspective, expand our understandings, and push us to view the world in new ways. It’s impressive to see members of The Scene embrace new experiences that challenge them personally and professionally and that they are each finding a way to get involved and support their community through the Center,” said Tania Castroverde Moskalenko, President/CEO at the Center for the Performing Arts.
