104 PUPTIANS ENTERED THE HONOR LIST Kristine Louise Omiz

Polytechnic University of the Philippines-Taguig hailed PUPTians who studied harder giving excellence for their chosen careers giving them an edge for their cream of the crop. A total of 104 students were recognized as Dean’s Listers while 66 President’s Listers were awarded last April 14 at PUPT Gymnasium. Majority in the Dean’s List were BS Accountancy students, while, Education major

students also topped the Dean’s and President’s lists with a total number of 64 (21 in Dean’s listers and 43 President’s Listers). “More PUPTians are qualified as Dean’s and President’s listers than the previous years”, all according to Head of Academic Programs Prof. Lawrence Usona. This also testifies to the betterment of teaching strategies in the campus mixing with the student’s desire to aim higher, claims Usona.

In order to be in Dean’s list and President’s list, a student must have a general average of 1.75 and 1.5 respectively, both with no failing grade, has regular load of subjects, and no advanced or late subject. Roxane Rivera, top 1 President’s list and an Education major student said that students must focus more in studies as subjects become

harder as time goes by. “Magaral lang ng mabuti. Galingan lang din sa practicum/OJT [kung Senior college student ka na]. Hindi kasi madali ang buhay OJT lalo ‘pag Education major ka. Atsaka, focus lang sa pag-aaral at dapat i-enjoy at mag-chill sa mga ginagawa mo,” Rivera gave as piece of advice for students who wish to be part of the Dean’s list.

Campus reach out to others; literacy program first to launch Kent Garcia

Extending the services and resources of the PUP-Taguig Branch into the community, the branch administration went to form the branch’s community service arm, the Community Extension Services (CES), with their first program, “Edukalinga”, launched last February. The “Edukalinga” program focuses on promoting literacy for the children of Taguig City through conducting weekly lessons on basic reading and speech for daycare students, through interactive lectures and

hands-on learning activities. Furthermore, it aims to serve other individuals and communities by organizing extension service programs in sustainable literacy training among other teachers and pupils at daycare centers, and outreach programs on literacy and occupational skills to reduce poverty and generate employment. Brgy. Lower Bicutan became the first recipients of the service as the opening program was launched at the barangay’s daycare center last February 27.

Lower Bicutan’s Brgy. Captain, Roel O. Pacayra, graced the event as he gave his message of thanks to the PUPT CES officials who were led by Branch Director Asst. Prof. Sharon Joy F. Pelayo. Joining the officials as facilitators are the Bachelor in Secondary Education major in English (BSED-E) Batch 2015. In a span of three meetings over three weeks, the facilitators taught the students about the alphabet, phonics and reading, utilizing strategies like interaction and storytelling. The pro-

gram ended last March 6. CES’ goals are to alleviate poverty, and achieve sustainable economic self-sufficiency and moral recovery through: quality and excellence, relevance and responsiveness, access and equity, efficiency and effectiveness, teamwork and discipline, and impact. Other key individuals in the establishment of the CES are Prof. Danilo A. Valenzuela as co-chairman, and Prof. Carmelita D. Gomez and Prof. Annabelle A. Gordonas as its members.
