SHEIN SUPPORTS REGIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS INITIATIVE

ISABEL MARANT OPENS NEW BOUTIQUE IN DUBAI

Isabel Marant opens the doors of a new boutique in Mall of the Emirates Dubai.

10

Located on the first Floor, Isabel Marant’s 102 square meter space offers a unique design aesthetic – drawing inspiration from the 1970s. A 10-meter heigh facade with 3D reliefs and an entrance door accessorized with an Isabel Marant signature handle reveal a women’s wardrobe arranged in a light and singular universe. Mirroring the artful sophistication and pioneering spirit that defines the French designer’s aesthetic, this concept has been developed by Marant’s studio in close interaction with a group of local talented young designers and artisans. All sharing the same passion for contrasts, happy tensions and subtle imperfection creating a specific approach of an intimate luxury - a luxury that is personal.

Following last year’s successful partnership with Friends of Cancer Patients (https://focp.ae/), this year SHEIN continues its commitment through sponsoring the Cancer Awareness Campaign in Dubai and Sharjah, with many initiatives in the pipeline, in observance of the International Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Under #SHEINcares program, part of the global CSR program of SHEIN 2021, SHEIN pledges its commitment to help the people in need from different aspects. #SHEINcares is proud to always support meaningful organizations from around the world. Last year, a medical booth of Abu Dhabi provided a total of 166 clinical breast examinations, 40 mammogram screenings and 15 ultrasound screenings during the period of 10 days. The renewed collaboration between FOCP and SHEIN is set in pursuit to reach higher objectives. For this month, to promote societal awareness of regular self-checks and mammogram screenings, Pink Caravan - a Pan-UAE Breast Cancer Awareness initiative by the Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP), is stepping up efforts to reinforce its key messages of early detection and timely diagnosis through a series of free clinical screenings, expert medical consultations, and educational awareness lectures. Mobile clinics made of a high-skilled medical team will offer free diagnostic services at selected locations across Sharjah and Dubai.

Opened to the world, turned towards other horizons and other types of savoir-faire, Isabel welcomes in her cabinet de curiosités, mixing intriguing sculptures and pieces of design that remind her travel souvenirs. Snuggled up on a fluffy Berber sofa surrounded by a forest of fiber porcelain, hand carved wooden podiums and rocklike textured corked tables. Isabel Marant’s wardrobe seems to come from a suitcase that spills open to share its treasures. Roaming as if life were lived on the road. Capturing the zeitgeist, in a creative and joyful spirit, Isabel plays with the space as she would play with her own clothes. Cutting out patches from the ceiling – as if they were dress patterns – or carving a wall with the shape of her iconic 90° earrings. Everything rolls, everything flows. Accessory walls get in and out, in a radiant game, playing with volumes, light and shadows. Obsessed with finishings, Isabel brings unexpected details and materials to her concept, spreading erosions and patina that express the raw edged and out of focus details she gives to her collections. Say Isabel Marant, think Parisian flow. Having founded her label in ’94, she instantly became renowned for her pioneering and cosmopolitan spirit bringing self-affirmation and feel good effect to her dégaine. To do so, ever since her launch, she has been trying on each garment before it leaves her studio to ensure everything works in the everyday life of a real woman. The designer, who opened her first boutique in Paris in the late nineties, will now have 61 stores open across the globe. This new Dubai based location will house the main line, a selection of the casual Isabel Marant Etoile collection, and her line of handbags and shoes. The boutique is open all week from 10am-12am on Thursday-Saturday and from 10am-10pm on Sunday-Wednesday

COACH INTRODUCES COACH X MICHAEL B. JORDAN ‘BLUE THE GREAT: THE ART OF COLLABORATION’

15

Coach introduces Coach x Michael B. Jordan, its next collaboration with actor, producer and Coach men’s ambassador Michael B. Jordan. The capsule collection, titled ‘Blue the Great: The Art of Collaboration’ is a partnership between Coach, Jordan and his friend, LA-based artist and painter Blue the Great. The collection and campaign recontextualize inclusivity in art—using the house’s heritage as a canvas to spotlight the importance of collaboration and friendship amongst the two artists––and the creative community at large. Inspired by Jordan’s personal approach to style and Blue’s contemporary take on art, the all-gender collection of ready-to-wear, footwear, bags and accessories combines the house’s heritage in craftsmanship with sportswear and streetwear in a limited edition drop. It features Coach’s iconic codes—Signature and Rexy— updated with Blue’s trademark mummy-wrapped art, as well as a tote crafted of 100 percent recycled materials. To introduce the collection, Coach will release a campaign photographed by frequent Coach collaborator Shaniqwa Jarvis. Featuring portraits of Jordan, Blue and friends, Khat and Frank Brim (beauty and lifestyle influencers), Lindsay Dawn (artist) and Tori Kirihara (artist) in an “open door” art gallery, the story repositions this traditionally exclusive place as a venue for collaboration and authentic connection. Inspired by the inclusive and optimistic spirit of New York and Coach, the campaign continues the house’s tradition of spotlighting the voices of up-and-coming and under-represented artists in its storytelling. ALEXANDER McQUEEN SUPPORTS YOUTH ARTS EDUCATION IN LONDON'S EAST END

28

Alexander McQueen is pleased to announce its support for A Team Arts Education, a community youth arts education organisation located in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. A Team Arts Education works to support the aspirations of young people to enter arts and design careers and acts as a catalyst for progress and attainment in an inner-London district with one of the fastest-growing, youngest and most diverse populations in the UK. “It feels especially important for us to be able to take part in supporting young people from the East End of London, where Lee Alexander McQueen grew up. At this house we all know that talent comes from everywhere, irrespective of background. At a time when UK arts education is narrowing and being cut and young people are under pressure, we’re inspired and humbled to be able to join with A Team Arts Education in their exceptional grass-roots work in providing fashion, textiles and art and design programmes.” – Sarah Burton www.theciin.com

The Alexander McQueen relationship with A Team Arts Education, has been cemented through one of the educational out-reach programmes of workshops which Sarah Burton has been running with in-house design team members throughout the pandemic. While other Alexander McQueen educational schemes connect with colleges and university students nationally, the association with A Team Arts Education forges a practical link with younger people locally through its dynamic and free art-led school holiday and Saturday programmes. “At a time when schools and local authorities are reducing their arts budgets and provision, we still need the arts to help bring about a positive recovery and come together after the Covid-19 pandemic. Working with Alexander McQueen will provide inspiration, hope and opportunities to an area that has established links to the fashion and textiles industries that are now hidden through layers of history and a changing urban landscape. The collaboration will help the arts to flourish in a positive way for young people and the wider community of East London.” – Sarbjit Natt, Director, A Team Arts Education. Over the coming year, Alexander McQueen will support A Team Arts Education financially, and further extend the workshops and classes with the young people and teachers it began as a pilot during 2020. Live experiences with McQueen’s design, textile and embroidery professionals will be structured as part of ‘The Explore Programme’, the A Teams Arts Education’s introduction to fashion, textiles and art and design pathways. In collaboration with the inspirational work in opening doors to higher education provided by the Central Saint Martins Insights Programme led by Berni Yates to generations of young people who may not have access to arts subjects in school, the initiative backs up vital social enterprise opportunities and the dynamic progression of diverse talent throughout the fashion industry.

Please introduce yourself to our readers. My name is Yasmin Shima. I am an artist, art teacher and producer from Bondi Beach, Sydney. I grew up in a family of artists so art was all around me as a child. In February 2017 I took my first painting class in 20 years and haven’t stopped since.

Tell us about your education. I finished year 12 and started working in advertising as soon as I left school. I worked my way through a career as a producer before rediscovering my art.

How did you get interested in arts? My Austrian grandfather whom I never met was an incredible realism artist. My own father inherited his talent and painted all the way through my childhood. He always had a painting on the go, I was surrounded by art and completed my first self portrait at age 18. I stopped painting for 20 years then rediscovered my passion for painting after a night in the atelier of a fellow artist.

Are you self-taught or did you take any special training? I’m mostly self taught with some formal training. I started painting with an artist friend, she taught me about expression, abstraction and being free. My former partner is an incredible artist and muralist so I absorbed a lot of technical skills from watching him. We started collaborating on mural projects together which we still do for commercial venues. The only formal training I’ve had were some classes with Milan Art Institute in the US, from fundamental life drawing skills to oil painting. I continue to self teach and learn on the go.

considered provocative? How do you deal with negative feedback on this? I paint mostly (but not only) women as my main subject, with an attitude of empowerment, beauty and sex appeal. When we remove shame and embrace all parts of ourselves we can be set free. The spirit of my messaging is relayed through the attitude of the subject. Some people may find it offensive but we’re not here to please everyone.

What is your favourite medium? Digital or original? Original paintings. I only developed this current digital style through teaching myself how to use Procreate during a chapter where I couldn’t work at my easel. It’s now part of my creation process.

What are your favourite materials to use for an artwork? Currently acrylic paint. I started going down a path of mark making, mixed media and oils which I will likely revisit in the future.

What does your creative process look like? I source, shoot or manipulate images I want to illustrate or paint, then I digitalise the image and create the colour palette, to finally relay the message onto canvas.

What’s your biggest challenge or struggle, either right now or that you’ve had to deal with?

Free-spirited, provocative, sensual and always evolving. I paint figurative work of mostly women who are smart, sensual, creative, confident and comfortable in all aspects of her being. She is free, adventurous, sweet, naughty, nice, a tomboy and a romantic.

Knowing what style I want to stick with and how I want to express myself visually. I spent the first 4 years in discovery and play, experimenting with different mediums and styles, without actually having a style. The work I produce now is a new direction and one I am enjoying right now. It’s important for me to create bodies of work so that I have some consistency with my messaging. When inspiration strikes I will shift gears again and start creating something new. I’m an artist and need to follow threads of inspiration. It’s all very intuitive.

What message do you like to convey through your work?

Where do you take your inspiration from?

How would you best describe your type of art?

A message of freedom and living outside the box.

Why is sometimes your work October, 2021

I follow a couple of photographers who shoot subjects in a way that speaks to me, or I shoot my own images. Anything edgy and sassy that catches my eye will likely end up in a painting!

39

Where do you sell your work from? I receive interest via Instagram, my website, WOM, my personal network or from people seeing and following my art. It’s all pretty organic but I should probably work on that!

What are you working on at present and how has the pandemic affected your way of operating? Currently working on a couple of murals for a local bar / entertainment venue here in Bondi called Mamasaan. Also have a body of work coming for a solo pop up. The pandemic pushed me out of commercial events as an event producer and led me onto art teaching. At a time when everyone was looking for something creative to do I started @studio.shima where I teach adults and kids how to paint.

What is your motto in life?

40

Ikigai. It’s a Japanese word that translates to ‘Reason for Being’. It’s when the 4 pillars - Purpose, Passion, Mission, Vocation – combined create a whole. My mother is Japanese and her culture has a wonderful way of using a single word to explain a lifestyle.

What are some of your other hobbies? What piece of your artwork would you like to be remembered for? I may not have created it yet.

What is your greatest indulgence in life? I am a pleasure seeker, so this is a difficult question to answer. I’ll go with massages because I can have them every day!

Have you exhibited your work in any galleries? Not yet, I have done group shows and appeared amongst over 200 international artists in a group show called RISE for the Australian bushfires, and I have produced my own group shows and art events. I have a solo pop up coming up so that will be a first. www.theciin.com

Your message for us at CiiN magazine. Make sure you take the time to nourish your creativity and dedicate time to doing things you love. Creativity breeds inspiration and innovation and allows us to connect with ourselves and others. It helps us be present and to express ourselves. Join Expo 2020’s ‘Cities of the Future’ visitor journey to experience pavilions embracing futurism

44

Showcasing developments that will change the way we live in the future, Expo’s specially curated ‘Cities of the Future’ visitor journey plots a tour through Country Pavilions that illustrate how advanced materials, smart technology and big data are making citizens safer, healthier, happier and more productive. By 2050, the world’s population is expected to reach 9.8 billion, with 6.7 billion living in urban areas, meaning that the cities of tomorrow cannot be accidental in their design. Sustainable cities of the future will be one of the topics explored during Expo’s Urban and Rural Development Week, which runs from 31 October to 6 November and probes how we must transform the way we move, build, consume and live in the habitats of the future. Expo visitors have the opportunity to see some of the latest innovations via the ‘Cities of the Future’ visitor journey. From buildings that incorporate natural elements to spaces that can quickly transform to meet changing housing or business needs, these Country Pavilions demonstrate how we can thrive in the face of challenges and change. www.theciin.com

45

The France Pavilion invites visitors to

discover its vision for the cities of the future – from designing the next shared vehicle to introducing a cutting-edge solution to access remote areas, it showcases projects and territories that contribute to the evolution of cities.

The Belgium Pavilion hones in on smart mobility and examines how AI can be used to help solve the pressing

issues of our time. Reflecting the country’s trademark ‘Belgitude’ – an expression of the Belgian soul and identity – the pavilion demonstrates how it is charting a course for the future with industrial, technological and scientific prowess.

Embracing nature, the

Poland Pavilion consists of a tree-like wooden structure, with a kinetic sculpture representing flying birds. Inside, visitors can discover municipal policy and the presentation of modern solutions in the fields of urban planning and city transformation.

46

New solutions in construction and planning await at the Estonia Pavilion, as part of a special exhibition. Here, Estonian capital Tallinn, its second-biggest city, Tartu, and the TalTech University, the only technical university in the country, present solutions for smart cities and future living. The point made by the Malaysia Pavilion is that cities of the future need to embrace carbon-reduction strategies, and all of the opportunities and challenges they present. With an ‘Energising Sustainability’ theme, the pavilion itself is net-zero, offsetting emissions released through the construction, operations and materials. Located in the Sustainability District, the innovative, interactive and collaborative Sweden Pavilion, known as ‘The Forest’, brings to life a growing and perfectly balanced ecosystem. Under the theme ‘CoCreation for Innovation’, it shows an array of best-practice examples for smart cities, next-generation transport and the bio-circular economy. At the Guinea Pavilion, visitors can discover how the country’s Vision 2040 initiative serves as a blueprint for the African city of tomorrow, with new ways to contract sustainable housing that is more resilient to climate change, and combines ancestral methods with modern technology. Next, visitors can put the cities of today (and tomorrow) to the test at the Future City Lab at the Germany Pavilion, while exploring interactive exhibits to discover how cities will function in decades to come. www.theciin.com

The India Pavilion showcases the ‘Smart City Mission’, an urban programme making smarter and more sustainable cities across the vast South Asia economic powerhouse.

47 From smart homes to intelligent agriculture, the China visitors to experience the latest 5G, AI and smart travel.

Cutting-edge research and development that will help design the cities of the future is a key feature of the Baden-Württemberg Pavilion – a wooden hybrid ‘house’ that embodies the innovation and sustainability of the German region.

One of the first global mega-events to take place since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Expo 2020 runs from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022, inviting visitors from around the world to join the making of a new world, experiencing a six-month journey of human creativity, innovation, progress and culture. PURIFICACION GARCIA HOMENAJE TRENZADO

56

The new Homenaje Trenzado has revamped version of its embossed pattern, given a twist using our Stamp technique. A special plate has been developed to emboss the leather to create a trompe l'oeil effect, adding volume to our cubes whilst at the same time giving the sensation that the leather is braided. An optical Illusion that alludes to the irony that characterizes the brand. This concept, which has rapidly become a point of reference for Purificación García, is directly linked to its DNA by means of "The Cube" to which it pays tribute. Its origins lie in the idea of giving new life to high quality leathers that are either unused or have little remaining stock. Instead of producing more, it is these leathers that are used to manufacture the bags. As a result, each leather and colour used in a Homenaje Trenzado bag are unique. They are limited editions produced in small quantities of between 80 and 250 pieces, depending on the bag's volume and the availability of the leather.

www.theciin.com

57

Creativity has been used to maximize the use of the leathers and give them added value through design. We see this use of materials as one of the key points in a move towards sustainability, especially in pieces that are created to last and live with us over time. The bags are light, flexible and soft to the touch. They are stripped of almost all trimmings, leaving only the very discreet, cubeshaped ones developed specifically for this family. The designs work with minimal, refined volumes that let the leather speak for itself. It is this mix of concepts, combination of ideas and the introduction of surprising new interpretations that motivates us.

IWC LAUNCHES PERFORMANCE-ORIENTED TOP GUN PILOT’S WATCHES IN CERATANIUM® IN A TACTICAL ALL-BLACK DESIGN

64

IWC Schaffhausen is adding two Ceratanium® models to its TOP GUN Pilot’s Watch range. Engineered in Schaffhausen, this innovative new material combines the structural integrity of titanium with a scratch-resistance similar to that of ceramic and features a striking matte black color. The Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar TOP GUN Ceratanium is the first watch from IWC with a Ceratanium® bracelet, which is lighter than steel and very comfortable to wear. The Pilot’s Watch Timezoner TOP GUN Ceratanium is the first TOP GUN model with a Timezoner® complication, allowing the wearer to change between different time zones effortlessly. Both novelties are powered by IWCmanufactured movements from the 52000 and 82000 calibre families.

Advanced performance materials such as ceramics, titanium and Ceratanium® are a signature feature of IWC’s TOP GUN pilot’s watches. They take their name from the legendary Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program, a rigorous course used by the US Navy to train its elite pilots in flying and tactical skills. TOP GUN watches are engineered to deliver ultimate performance and can withstand even the extreme strain pilots experience in the cockpit of a supersonic jet. After pioneering the use of ceramics and titanium for wristwatches during the 1980s, IWC’s material engineers have now succeeded in combining the unique strengths of these two in a single, ground-breaking material. Developed over five years, www.theciin.com

Ceratanium® combines the lightness and structural integrity of titanium with a hardness and scratchresistance similar to ceramic. In addition, Ceratanium® is also skin-friendly and highly resistant to corrosion. “Ceratanium® is unique not only because of its outstanding material properties. With its matte black color, it also enables us to manufacture watches in a completely jet-black design. After introducing several models with Ceratanium® cases, we are now going one step further and for the first time present a bracelet crafted from this innovative material,” explains Christoph Grainger-Herr, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen. The Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar TOP GUN Ceratanium (Ref. IW503604) features a case, crown and, for the first time, a bracelet made of Ceratanium®. As this material is based on a titanium alloy, the bracelet is around 30 percent lighter than a steel bracelet and extremely comfortable to wear. The black dial with gray numerals enhances the jet-black design. This TOP GUN model is powered by the IWC-manufactured 52615 calibre, visible through the tinted sapphire glass case back. The Pellaton winding system is fitted with components made of virtually wear-free ceramic and builds up a power reserve of seven days in two barrels. A single nightly switching impulse from the base movement drives the perpetual calendar. Its mechanical program automatically recognizes different month lengths and leap years and will require no correction until 2100. Another IWC speciality is the specific moon phase display, which depicts the moon as it is seen from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. It is so precise that it will only deviate by one day after 577.5 years. The annual production of this extraordinary timepiece will be limited to 150 pieces. The Pilot’s Watch Timezoner TOP GUN Ceratanium (Ref. IW395505) is the first TOP GUN model with a Timezoner® complication. The watch can be set to a different time zone by simply pressing down and rotating the bezel. The hour hand, the 24-hour display and the date will move forwards or backwards in one-hour steps. This also works across the dateline and without losing a single second. The case is made of Ceratanium®, while the city ring is manufactured from ceramic. It contains the names of 24 cities, each one representing one of the international time zones. The numerals are printed in gray on the dial, while the numbers 12, 3, 6 and 9 are coated with a luminescent material. The jet-black tactical design is complemented with a tinted sapphire glass case back and a black rubber strap with textile inlay. The IWC-manufactured 82760 calibre uses a Pellaton winding system reinforced with ceramic components to build up a power reserve of 60 hours in the mainspring. The annual production of the Pilot’s Watch Timezoner TOP GUN Ceratanium will be limited to 500 pieces.

MACHINED FROM BARS AND FIRED AT HIGH TEMPERATURES Ceratanium® is arguably one of IWC’s most important material innovations in recent years. IWC first used this material in 2017 for the case of the Aquatimer Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month Edition “50 Years Aquatimer” (Ref. 379403). In 2019, the Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph TOP GUN Ceratanium (Ref. IW371815) was the first all-black Pilot’s Watch. Ceratanium® is based on a special titanium alloy that is forged to IWC’s specifications. The case components are machined from bars to minimal tolerances using computer-controlled turning and milling centers and are then elaborately finished by hand. Afterwards, the components are fired in a kiln at high temperatures. During this firing process, a phase transformation occurs. As a result, the surface of the material not only obtains properties similar to ceramics, such as hardness and scratch- resistance, but also its striking matte black finish. October, 2021

Defined as the combination of a park and a shopping mall, both considered as highly attended "third place", this innovative library embodies an ecosystemic vision where the programs and the relations between them are developed with the same level of attention. It is a true social and information exchange network that takes shape into a complex circulation structure that renews the library experience with each visit. The design of the Pierrefonds Public Library also innovates in its relation to the landscape, its discreet technological approach actively participating in the scenography, and the collections’ display. The latter are structured around thematic poles to enhance accessibility. “The overall planning strategy of this innovative and highly technological library was inspired by the pragmatic efficiency of shopping centers, train stations, and airports, all while avoiding their flaws.”

107

October, 2021

The combination of an ideal park and a shopping mall While looking through old masterplans of Pierrefonds-Roxboro, the architects came across a graphic image depicting the main planning criteria for green spaces in the district. The drawing showed an idealized park on a generic site. The park was divided into various areas, based on age groups and types of activities: green spaces, rest spaces, play zones, exchange networks, etc.; similar to library planning. An in-depth study of this document, paired with a reorganization of the various areas, especially the green spaces, became one of the foundations for the project. An interior garden emerged as a result of these explorations. Created by an extraction process, the garden allows natural light as well as part of the natural surroundings to reach the heart of the existing building. The garden also functions as reference point for users and employees of the library. Typical of suburban environments and often criticized, the shopping mall typology was also investigated. Generic buildings, obedient to functional and economic requirements, shopping malls have one or many focal points. These centers of activities and exchange are almost always topped with a large skylight accentuating the composition. Another important characteristic of the shopping mall is its circulation network fed by multiple entryways that compels the customer into specific paths. Thus, stairways typically located in central atriums are often voluntarily reversed, as a way of extending the visitor’s stay. This typology is particularly interesting to the planning of a library. Its numerous spatial qualities are essential components of what is called a “third place”. Users circulating freely, flexibility in spatial organization, multiple movements and experiences are just a few of these advantages. The project’s main elements are directly inspired by the shopping mall typology: wings merging into a central meeting space, a network of stairways, a bleacher, floor openings allowing visual connections, multiple skylights, as well as a civic space. The building’s surroundings, usually filled with parking lots, and opaque walls are here replaced by green spaces and glass curtain walls.

108 Formally, the project adjusts itself according to the site’s main elements. Instead of being purely functional and economic, the building’s shape is drawn to both manifest its urban presence on Pierrefonds Boulevard, and get closer to the wooded park, and to retract to reveal existing greenery islands on the site.

October, 2021

White transparency and structural lightness The project’s forms and materials are simple and intend to disappear to highlight the presence of its landscape, users, and books. White is dominant both inside and out and offers a neutral canvas from which the landscape’s changing colors, the roaming visitors, and the many documents contrast and stand out. The white surfaces – walls, ceilings, and shelving – also reflect and multiply the natural light coming in through the vast glass curtain walls, the interior garden, the glass roof, and the multiple skylights, allowing the library to stay bright even during cloudy weather. On the upper level, the light-yellow epoxy-glazed concrete floor, oak bleachers, and colorful and comfortable furniture bring warmth to the predominantly white spaces. A glazed curtain-wall system punctuated with white aluminum sections wraps the perimeter of the building. Some glass panels are screenprinted to create a smooth transition between transparency and opacity. The envelope is also textured inside; perforated aluminum panels flank the floor and ceiling, which also act as a ventilation distribution system. Most of the upper floor slab is cantilevered along the perimeter of the building. The structural challenge to preserve the impression of lightness was achieved by making the floor slab appear as thin as possible. The steel structure was carefully crafted in collaboration with structural engineers, especially the glass roof over the bleachers facing the woods.

110

Finally, the new building spreads around the initial borough’s library. Developing the junctions between the new building envelope and the existing facade was another technical and esthetical challenge. Some salvaged bricks were used to create inside partitions recalling the outline of the previous building. Integrating the memory of the old library into the current project was fundamental.

Collections organization and distribution In dialog with the collections’ organization in thematic poles desired by the clients, the architects developed an approach that prioritizes individuals and their interactions. It offers visibility, flexibility and a variety of spaces to read, work, and relax. The architects first opted for a dense distribution of the collections to free a maximum of space in the centers and accentuate the plan taking care to preserve interesting views. Then, they proposed to place thematic isles in the freed-up spaces allowing the display of the collections in a library style. Just as one occupies a place that suits them in a park, these central spaces are organic and contain many sub-spaces more or less intimate following each one’s desire. www.theciin.com

The EQS, the first electric vehicle in the luxury class, Makes Middle East Debut at GITEX 2021

116

www.theciin.com

The EQS, the first all-electric luxury sedan from Mercedes-EQ, marks its Middle East debut at the region’s biggest tech show, GITEX Global 2021 from 17 to 21 October. With it, Mercedes-EQ is redefining the electrical vehicle segment. The EQS is the first model to be based on the modular architecture for luxury and executive-class electric vehicles. Fusing technology, design, functionality and connectivity, the EQS delights both drivers and passengers.

As part of its Ambition 2039 initiative, Mercedes-Benz is working on offering a carbon-neutral new car fleet within 20 years from now. By as early as 2030, the company wants more than half the cars it sells to feature electric drive systems - this includes fully electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. In many areas, Mercedes is already thinking about tomorrow today: the new EQS is designed to be correspondingly sustainable. The vehicles are produced in a carbon-neutral manner, and resource-saving materials such as carpets made from recycled yarn are used. This is because Mercedes-Benz considers the entire value chain, from development and the supplier network to its own production. Mercedes-Benz AG has had its climate protection targets confirmed by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTI). With a great deal of meticulous detailing and on the basis of the Purpose design, the aerodynamicists, in close cooperation with the designers, were able to achieve a new cd best value of 0.20 . This makes the EQS the most aerodynamic production car in the world. The operating range particularly benefits from this. It is also among the best in terms of quiet running. The very low wind noise level contributes significantly to this. The EQS also currently sets a very good value for recuperation: Of the maximum deceleration in the DAuto recuperation program of 5 m/s², up to 3 m/s² is achieved by recuperation (2 m/s² by the wheel brakes). This allows decelerating to a standstill without using the brake pedal, while at the same time the range benefits from this recuperation strategy and the high recuperation power (up to 290 kW ). Deceleration is also applied to detected vehicles ahead until they come to a standstill, for example at traffic lights. Intelligent energy recovery is situationoptimised with the aid of ECO Assist and acts with foresight, taking into account traffic conditions or topography, among other things. The driver also can set three energy recovery levels and the coast function via paddle shifters on the steering wheel. With EQS 580 range of up to 702 kilometres (WLTP) and an output of up to 385 kW the powertrain of the EQS also meets every expectation of a progressive sedan in the S-Class segment. The EQS 53 AMG 4MATIC is the performance version with up to 484kW and with DYNAMIC PLUS package, which is available as an option, the maximum output increases to up to 560 kW. All EQS models have an electric powertrain (eATS) at the rear axle, while the versions with 4MATIC also have an eATS at the front axle. The EQS marks the launch of a new generation of batteries with significantly higher energy density. The larger of the two batteries has a usable energy content of 107.8 kWh. That is around 26 percent more than the EQC (EQC 400 4MATIC: combined electrical consumption: 21.5-20.1 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions: 0 g/km) . The innovative battery management software, developed in-house, allows updates over the air (OTA). In this way, the energy management system remains up to date throughout the life cycle. In terms of the cell chemistry, the cobalt content of the cathodes has been reduced to ten percent. The EQS can be charged with up to 200 kW at fast charging stations with direct current. Power for up to another 300 kilometres (WLTP) is recharged in just 15 minutes . The EQS can be conveniently charged with up to 22 kW with AC using the on-board charger, aside from various intelligent charging programs that can be activated automatically depending on the location, and functions such as particularly battery-saving charging. Navigation with Electric Intelligence plans the fastest and most convenient route, including charging stops, based on numerous factors and reacts dynamically to traffic jams or a change in driving style, for example. A new feature of the EQS is a visualisation in the infotainment system (MBUX Mercedes-Benz User Experience) showing whether the www.theciin.com

available battery capacity is sufficient to return to the starting point without charging. Charging stations along the route that have been added manually are given preference in the route calculation. Proposed charging stations can be excluded. The estimated charging costs per charging stop are calculated. Although the EQS is a close relative of the new S-Class, it is built on an all-electric architecture. This completely new concept made a rigorous Purpose Design possible: with its one-bow lines and cab-forward design with fastback, the EQS is clearly distinguishable from vehicles with combustion engines even at first glance. The design philosophy of Sensual Purity, combined with Progressive Luxury, is reflected in generously sculpted surfaces, reduced joints and seamless transitions (seamless design). The front is combined into a 'Black Panel' unit. Innovative headlights connected by a light band and the deep black radiator grille (Black Panel) form the distinctive face. The exclusive look of the Black Panel radiator grille with central Mercedes star can be enhanced still further: as an optional extra, they are also available with a three-dimensional star pattern. This MercedesBenz pattern is available in conjunction with AMG Line Exterior or Electric Art Exterior. The design picks up on the original star of the Daimler-Motorengesellschaft, which was registered as a trademark in 1911. The EQS is the first Mercedes to offer the option of activating completely new vehicle functions via over-the-air updates (OTA) in many functional areas. Available from launch: two special driving programs for young drivers and service staff, some little games and the demo program "The Best or Nothing". This means that, following the purchase and the initial new-car configuration, some of the features of the EQS can be adapted according to personal preferences. It will also be possible to unlock the rear axle steering with the larger steering angle of

ten degrees. In addition to the classic purchase of individual functions, subscriptions, temporary activations and free test phases are also planned. With ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL PLUS, Mercedes-Benz is taking a comprehensive approach to air quality in the EQS. The system is based on filtration, sensors, a display concept and air conditioning. The HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter has a very high filtration level that enables it to trap fine particles, micro-particles, pollen and other substances that enter with the outside air. As an option, the EQS has automatic comfort doors at the front and rear. When the driver approaches the car, first of all the door handles extend. As he or she approaches further, the driver's door opens automatically. Using MBUX, the driver is also able to open the rear doors, for example, to let in children in front of the school. As an exceptionally intelligent vehicle, the EQS has up to 350 sensors, depending on the equipment. These record distances, speeds and accelerations, lighting conditions, precipitation and temperatures, seat occupancy as well as the driver's blink of an eye or the passengers' speech. This wealth of information is processed by control units that, controlled by algorithms, make decisions at lightning speed. The all-round sound experience in the EQS also makes the paradigm shift from a conventional to an electric car audible. A variety of soundscapes allows for an individual acoustic set-up. In combination with the Burmester® surround sound system, the EQS features the two soundscapes Silver Waves and Vivid Flux. As Sound Experiences they can be selected or switched off on the central display. Another soundscape can be unlocked using over-the-air technology. The interactive driving sound, which is reproduced via the sound system's loudspeakers in the interior, also moves within the respective sound world.

INTRODUCTION Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has a unique fluency in its clients. Its close relationship with the women and men who patronise the marque affords the company’s decision-makers an unparalleled understanding of the super-luxury consumer: their aesthetic preferences, uncompromising lifestyle requirements and changing taste patterns. Only with this understanding, and briefings supplied by the brand's Luxury Intelligence Unit, is the marque able to create an accurate product response. Black Badge is a vivid example of this. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has always attracted subversive clients – rebellious women and men who built their success by breaking rules, taking risks and challenging conventions. In the 2020s, these women and men engage with luxury products on their own terms. They reject suits for streetwear, use blockchain not banks and influence the analogue world through their digital endeavours. In doing so, they have created new codes of luxury that resonate with their sensibilities: darker in aesthetic, assertive in character and bold in design. Their approach to Rolls-Royce products is no different. The marque has responded accordingly, developing new colour palettes, more technical surface treatments and even more powerful driving experiences without ever compromising the effortless sensibilities that have drawn this bold group of clients to the Rolls-Royce brand.

Black Badge, the highly successful alter ego of Rolls-Royce, now represents more than 27% of commissions worldwide and is codified by the mathematical symbol that represents a potential infinity, which is found within the motor car’s interior. This graphic, also known as the Lemniscate, was applied to Sir Malcolm Campbell’s record-breaking Rolls-Royce-powered Blue Bird K3 hydroplane and the marque's designers nominated this hallmark for Black Badge motor cars to reflect their own unrelenting pursuit of power. Rolls-Royce debuted Black Badge with Wraith and Ghost in 2016, followed by Dawn in 2017 then Cullinan in 2019. Today, a new, Post Opulent expression of Black Badge joins the family. The purest and most technologically advanced Black Badge motor car yet, Black Badge Ghost. THE DARK SIDE OF POST OPULENCE Conceived in response to a group of clients who requested a Rolls-Royce that was agile, discreet, highly connected and free of any superfluous design, the new Ghost is not just the most technologically advanced Rolls-Royce yet, but also the most aesthetically pure. In the twelve months since this motor car has been available, it has become one of the fastest-selling products in the marque’s history, representing more than 3,500 commissions worldwide. This motor car also started a new design conversation in its relentless pursuit of minimalism and purity. Named ‘Post Opulence’ by Rolls-Royce designers, this aesthetic movement is characterised by reduction and substance. In service to this, exceptional materials are selected and celebrated while overt design is limited, intelligent and unobtrusive. However, within this group of clients – who celebrate minimalism and material substance – a rebellious subset sought to create a disruptive expression of Ghost by permanently cloaking it in a shade so pure that its very classification as a colour remains a subject of debate: black. Black Badge Ghost reflects these clients’ desires. It is the dark side of Post Opulence: minimalism in extremis. EXTERIOR Clients are free to select any of the marque’s 44,000 ‘readyto-wear’ colours or create their own entirely unique Bespoke www.theciin.com

hue. However, the overwhelming majority of women and men who requested this darker expression of Ghost have selected the signature Black. To create what is the motor car industry’s darkest black, 100lbs (45kg) of paint is atomised and applied to an electrostatically charged body in white before being oven dried. The motor car then receives two layers of clear coat before being hand-polished by a team of four craftsman to produce the marque’s signature high-gloss piano finish. At between three and five hours in duration, this operation is entirely unknown in mass production, creating an intensity simply unattainable elsewhere in the automotive industry. It is this depth of darkness that serves as the perfect canvas for clients to add a high-contrast, hand-painted Coachline, which has done much to create the Black Badge ‘black and neon’ aesthetic that has come to characterise this vivid family of Rolls-Royce motor cars. To match this dramatic coachwork, the marque’s Bespoke Collective of designers, engineers and craftspeople collaborated to create an entirely customisable process that allows RollsRoyce hallmarks such as the high-polished Spirit of Ecstasy and Pantheon Grille to be subverted. Instead of simply painting these components, a specific chrome electrolyte is introduced to the traditional chrome plating process that is co-deposited on the stainless-steel substrate, darkening the finish. Its final thickness is just one micrometre – around one hundredth of the width of a human hair. Each of these components is precision-polished by hand to achieve a mirror-black chrome finish before it is fitted to the motor car.

The exterior treatment resolves with a Bespoke 21-inch composite wheelset. Designed in the Black Badge house style and reserved for Black Badge Ghost, the barrel of each wheel is made up of 22 layers of carbon fibre laid on three axes, then folded back on themselves at the outer edges of the rim, forming a total of 44 layers of carbon fibre for greater strength. A 3D-forged aluminium hub is bonded to the rim using aerospace-grade titanium fasteners and finished with the marque’s hallmark Floating Hubcap, ensuring the Double R monogram remains upright at all times. To celebrate the material substance and remarkable surface effect, a lightly tinted lacquer is applied to protect the finish but still allow clients to observe the technical complexity of the wheels unique carbon fibre construction. INTERIOR Advanced luxury materials have been meticulously created and crafted for a unique ambience in the interior suite. While recalling the dramatic mechanical intent of Black Badge Ghost, the materials are true to Ghost’s Post Opulent design philosophy – one defined by authenticity and material substance rather than overt statement. In this spirit, a complex but subtle weave that incorporates a deep diamond pattern rendered in carbon and metallic fibres has been created by the marque’s craftspeople. Multiple wood layers are pressed onto the interior component substrates, using black Bolivar veneer for the uppermost base layer. This forms a dark foundation for the Technical Fibre layers that follow. Leaves woven from resin-coated carbon and contrasting metal-coated thread laid in a diamond pattern are applied by hand to the components in perfect alignment, creating a three-dimensional effect. To secure this extraordinary veneer, each component is cured for one hour under pressure at 100°C. This is then sand-blasted to create a keyed surface for six layers of lacquer, which is hand-sanded and polished before being incorporated into the motor car. If specified in the client’s commission, the Technical Fibre ‘Waterfall’ section of the individual rear seats receives the Black Badge family motif: the mathematical symbol that represents potential infinity known as a Lemniscate. Rendered in aerospacegrade aluminium on the lid of Black Badge Ghost’s Champagne cooler, it is applied between the third and fourth layer of a total of six layers of subtly tinted lacquer, creating the illusion that the symbol is floating above the Technical Fibre veneer. Aesthetes from the marque’s design team elected to further enhance the noir ambience of Black Badge Ghost by subduing the brightwork. Air vent surrounds on the dashboard and in the www.theciin.com

rear cabin are darkened using physical vapour deposition, one of the few methods of colouring metal that ensures parts will not discolour or tarnish over time or through repeated use. The Post Opulent principles of simplicity have also been applied to dramatic effect in the Black Badge Ghost timepiece design: only the tips of the hands and the twelve, three, six and nine o'clock markers are picked out, in a subdued chrome finish, creating a remarkably minimal clock. Additional timepieces are available within Black Badge Ghost to suit the client’s aesthetic preference. The timepiece is flanked by a world-first Bespoke innovation that debuted with Ghost: the Illuminated Fascia, which displays an ethereal glowing Lemniscate, surrounded by more than 850 stars. Located on the passenger side of the dashboard, the constellation and motif are completely invisible when the interior lights are not in operation. As in Ghost, the Lemniscate motif is illuminated via 152 LEDs mounted above and beneath the fascia, each meticulously colour-matched to the cabin’s clock and instrument dial lighting. To ensure the Lemniscate is lit evenly, a 2mm-thick light guide is used, featuring more than 90,000 laser-etched dots across the surface. This not only disperses the light evenly but creates a twinkling effect as the eye moves across the fascia, echoing the subtle sparkle of the Shooting Star Starlight Headliner. ENGINEERING Black Badge is not just an aesthetic – it is an experience. The clients who requested this motor car demanded that the Bespoke treatment of Black Badge Ghost extend from the design atelier into the marque’s engineering department. In doing so, the Bespoke Collective of designers, engineers and craftspeople collaborated to create a vivid driving personality that matched Black Badge Ghost’s visual intent without compromising the marque’s effortless ride proclivities and exhaustive acoustic tuning. Key to its potent character is the Architecture of Luxury, RollsRoyce’s proprietary all-aluminium spaceframe architecture that debuted with Phantom. This sub-structure not only delivers extraordinary body stiffness, but its flexibility and scalability allowed Ghost to be equipped with all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering and the award-winning Planar Suspension system. For Black Badge, these peerless engineering qualities have been comprehensively re-engineered, including the fitting of more voluminous air springs to alleviate body roll under more assertive cornering. The capacity of the Rolls-Royce twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre V12 engine was deemed sufficient. However, the flexibility of this celebrated power plant has been exploited to generate an extra 29PS, creating a total output of 600PS. The sense of a single infinite gear has also been dramatised with the addition of a further 50NM of torque, for a total of 900NM. The powertrain has also received Bespoke transmission and throttle treatments to further enhance the engine’s increased power reserves. The ZF eight-speed gear box and both front- and rear-steered axles work collaboratively to adjust the levels of feedback to the driver, depending on throttle and steering inputs. As with all products in the marque’s Black Badge portfolio, the ‘Low’ button situated on the gear selection stalk unlocks Black Badge Ghost’s full suite of technologies. This is asserted by the amplification of the motor car's engine through an entirely new exhaust system, subtly announcing its potency. All 900NM of torque is available from just 1700rpm and, once underway in Low Mode, gearshift speeds are increased by 50% when the throttle is depressed to 90%, delivering Black Badge Ghost’s abundant power reserves with dramatic immediacy. To bolster confidence when exploiting Black Badge Ghost, the braking bite point has been raised and pedal travel decreased. Non-Black Badge Ghost is provisioned with a robust braking hardware package that was deemed more than ample under extreme conditions, even accounting for the Black Badge alter ego’s increased power output. However, a new suite of bold hightemperature brake calliper paint colours has been developed in preparation for forthcoming Black Badge Ghost commissions. October, 2021
