JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Trinity Square may be a hidden gem in the heart of downtown, but there’s no question it’s a gem that could use a little polishing. The small open space, tucked behind the Eaton Centre, is home to the Church of the Holy Trinity and Toronto’s homeless memorial, and is a popular destination for those looking for a quiet space to enjoy lunch breaks or a respite from the busyness of the city’s core. A new initiative could see the square get a makeover, boosting its profile among those who live, work and play downtown. Jessica Hutcheon of Janet Rosenberg & Studio, the landscape architecture and urban design firm tasked with the revitalization plan, unveiled the preferred design for the square at a meeting at the Church of the Holy Trinity on Tuesday, Aug. 22, out-
lining what the revitalized plan could have to offer. She noted the public helped shape the design through prior meetings and an online survey, highlighting what they wanted to see in the refreshed space. "Seating was a big one (in terms of what people identified as a priority), safety concerns, maintenance and having a working water feature," she told those gathered at the meeting. Some of the planned upgrades include enhanced plantings through planter boxes, fixing up the square’s uneven paving, better lighting - including lights that would highlight the historic architecture of the church - and repairing the clock tower in the space. While the work would improve many elements of the square, Hutcheon noted the changes would retain the elements survey respondents said they

"The park has really good bones, so we want to keep those," she said. That does not mean there won’t be changes.
The plan could see the homeless memorial moved from outside the front entrance to the church to a less travelled space beside the church. This, Hutcheon noted, would make visiting the memorial a more private and personal expe-
rience for those who wish to pay their respects. "There was quite a bit of debate about how visible we want the memorial to be," she acknowledged, adding that the proposed new location would allow "enough space for quiet re-
flection." A water feature in the park, meanwhile, would be covered by a grate to allow the tranquil sounds of rushing water without creating hazards or major maintenance issues. Perhaps most importantly, according to those who offered their opinions on the space, the revitalized park would include both fixed and movable furniture, giving them more places to sit and relax. The redevelopment could also see programming during set times, from concerts to fitness workshops to a pop-up library, said Mark Garner, executive director of the Downtown Yonge BIA, one of the key stakeholders in the area. "It’s really about making this space more usable and more welcoming for people in the downtown core," he said. "We’re trying to bring some revitalized splendour back to the park."

Famed Jerusalem market comes to Wychwood Barns JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

Dena Bensalmon, director at Ezer Mizion Organization, stands next to a "shuk" display at Fruit of the Land for an upcoming fundraiser in celebration of the largest Jewish bone marrow registry in the world. Artscape Wychwood Barns will be transformed into a traditional shuk for the event, and Fruit of the Land will be one of the vendors on site. bone marrow sample costs $65 - so sponsoring a marrow donor will help Ezer Mizion save lives. For most, however, the chance to experience a taste of Jerusalem in the heart of
Toronto will be the event’s biggest draw. "The whole idea is to have people feel like they’re in Israel for a day," Bensalmon said. "They’ll feel like they’re part of a rich, fun
culture." She added that Wychwood Barns is the ideal location given its large open space. Designers are going to great lengths to replicate the stalls seen in Shuk Ma-
chane Yehuda. "What the shuk looks like and what Wychwood looks like - it’s uncanny," Bensalmon said. "It’s not just a bunch of tables with people selling things." She added that security will be of the utmost importance at the event to ensure all goes off without a hitch. Bensalmon expects the event, which is fully kosher, to be a one-of-a-kind opportunity for Torontonians. "As far as we know, there hasn’t been anything like this (replica of the famous shuk) in Toronto, or anywhere else in the world," she said. "We want people to come away feeling like they’ve been in the actual Jerusalem market and knowing that Ezer Mizion isn’t just an organization that helps Israelis." The shuk will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10. For more information or to buy tickets, visit www.ezermizion.org/shuk.

The sights, sounds and tastes of Israel are coming to Wychwood Barns as part of a fundraising event for Ezer Mizion, the world’s largest Jewish donor bone marrow registry. The barns will be converted into a replica of Shuk Machane Yehuda, Jerusalem’s famous street market for a day, with a variety of vendors from both Canada and Israel. They will all bring authentic Middle Eastern goods, and they will treat the one-day event as a miniature version of the actual shuk. "We wanted to bring the look, the feel, the sights, the smells and the sounds of the authentic market here," said Dena Bensalmon, Canadian director of Ezer Mizion. "There will be a lot of shouting - ’come get your strawberries here!’ - as vendors try to catch people’s attention."
The shuk will feature everything from food to art, jewelry and products from the Dead Sea, with vendors and Ezer Mizion both benefiting. The bone marrow registry has saved thousands of lives, including 36 in Canada. While Ezer Mizion is a Jewish donor registry, Bensalmon noted it has also saved the lives of non-Jewish people. "For a bone-marrow transplant, you need a full DNA match," she said. "For Jewish people, the likelihood of finding a match is much higher from a Jewish donor, but three per cent of the lives saved (through Ezer Mizion bone marrow donations) have been nonJewish." At the shuk, shoppers will be able to donate money in support of a partnership between the Israeli Defense Forces and Ezer Mizion. Bone marrow donation and testing costs money - processing a single

Brock Doors & Windows announces winners of the 2017 $25,000 home makeover On July 13, 2017 Brock Doors & Windows presented a cheque for $25,000 to the winners of their annual home makeover contest: Dawna and Gary Malmquist of Georgetown, ON. Of thousands of entries, No. 178 was drawn through a random number generator. After speaking with the couple, Kevin Howatt of Brock Doors and Windows learned that the Malmquists are previous customers of the company, having turned to Brock for their previous home renovations. Dawna explained that during their first
project she noticed an envelope of money on the floor that must have belonged to the Brock sales representative. She called to return it immediately. Now, three years later, karma returned the favour to this honest, deserving duo. Brock Doors & Windows holds the draw annually and the Malmquists are the third couple to take home the prize. JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com From boosting food security to helping the environment, building community and adding green space in cities, urban agriculture provides plenty of benefits. While there are still obstacles, such as finding space and securing the right to use it, more and more urban gardens are bringing green, and greens, to Toronto. "In cities, green space is at a premium, especially publicly accessible green space," said Rhonda TeitelPayne of Toronto Urban Growers. "In the downtown core in particular, there’s a lot of built environment and not a lot of green space, but in some ways the space that’s there is more accessible than the space that’s available in the suburbs." Urban agriculture is cropping up in a variety of ways, from public gardens in parks to private gardens,
backyard and rooftop spaces, to aquaponics. Still, when looking to start up a community garden, she noted organizers often wind up fighting an uphill battle. "There are issues getting permission to install a project, issues with zoning, and some (property) owners are a little skeptical - they want to see the impact urban gardens will have," she said. The City has an application process in place for those who wish to start up a community garden in parks or on other cityowned property. Garth Armour, manager of horticulture at the City of Toronto, noted the process is not onerous, but said a number of factors must be taken into account before approval is granted. "First, we ask for a lead (organizer) and a second lead so we have two people organizing the group, and a list of who the garden members will be," he said. "Then

Sustainalytics volunteers Heather Lang (left) and Vikram Puppala join Black Creek Community Farm coordinator Amy Cheng in refreshing a plant bed in the greenhouse on Friday, Aug. 25 at the farm. we look at the financial requirements and resources and we have to take into account that park land is in great demand in a city the size of Toronto." Teitel-Payne said more space is key in a city where
demand for gardening space outpaces supply. "What we need are more community gardens where people can see the benefits and the success stories," she said. Darcy Higgins of food se-
curity-based social venture Building Roots concurred, noting that at the group’s Edible Allan Gardens site downtown, a dozen community partners come together to grow, learn and share.
"It’s an opportunity for people to eat what they’re growing and try really delicious food right out of the garden, and it’s an opportunity for youth to learn how to grow food," he said. "Some of the people who use the space are experienced gardeners who don’t have space downtown and some have never grown in their lives." Most importantly, however, it’s a way to bring people together. Higgins said meeting outdoors over food brings people from different age, cultural and socioeconomic demographics together over a shared love of food. The upcoming Urban Ag Day Toronto with an event at Scadding Court Community Centre from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15 will showcase some of the city’s urban agriculture assets and provide people with a chance to get involved in urban growing. ABOUT US
New blood-alcohol rules just make sense The news that the federal government might lower the legal blood-alcohol limit for drivers might seem to have come out of nowhere. After all, thanks to concerted efforts by lawmakers and police, the rate of impaired driving incidents in Canada dropped to a 30-year low in 2015. Yet despite this progress, there is no better time than now to consider tougher drunk driving laws in this country. In less than a year, a new kind of impaired driver could be menacing Canada’s roads - one who just legally smoked marijuana. It is vital that if the federal Liberals permit the recreational use of cannabis starting next summer, they get tougher with drivers caught under the influence of drugs. As they do that, a stricter law on how much people can drink before driving is also very much in order. The federal government is justifiably concerned that when recreational marijuana is legal, more people may drive under the influence of the drug. And some of those irresponsible people might even drive after mixing marijuana and alcohol. That potentially lethal combination is reason enough for Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould to consider lowering the legal blood limits for drivers from the current 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood to 50 milligrams. Rules that helped limit drinking and driving in the past might be too lax if booze and pot are mixed. Yet her proposal has other merits. While decades of anti-drunk-driving campaigns have produced positive results, we still have a long way to go. A recent study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ranked Canada first out of 19 wealthy countries for the percentage of traffic deaths linked to alcohol impairment. Canada’s current rules were established in 1969 and based on research that concluded the risk of being in a car crash was twice as likely if a driver has 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood in his or her system. It turns out that’s wrong. New research shows the risk of being in a collision is almost triple at the 80-milligrams level and rises exponentially when alcohol levels are even higher. Many European countries, as well as Australia, have wisely lowered the limit to 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. Canadians are headed down a new and unfamiliar highway with legalized marijuana. We can make the journey safer with stronger laws prohibiting every kind of impaired driving.

Toronto’s immigrants are cheated at work Winli Apparel Manufacturing shut down in Scarborough, and its sewing-machine operators, making little more than minimum wage, got four weeks’ pay. Chinese-speaking immigrants, some worked for Winli for more than 20 years. Thirteen got legal help to get the rest of what they were owed. Winli was ordered to pay them $26,000, and didn’t. The province dragged the company to court and, on Aug. 21, fined it $49,000, none of which the workers will see. That’s normal. Avvy Go, director of Metro Toronto Chinese and Southeast Asian Legal Clinic, represented the workers, and says many won’t approach the Ministry of Labour if they think they can keep their job.
MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto When they hear "We’re shutting down," or "You’re fired," it’s often too late to collect, she said. How much some Greater Toronto employers cheat workers was spelled out in the clinic’s report last year, Sweet and Sour, covering 184 restaurant workers’ experiences over the previous three years. Bringing the wage fund back, Go argues, would lead to fewer injustices like Winli. Meanwhile, owners of the Regal restaurant chain around Toronto are finally going to court in November, after being ordered by the ministry to pay former employees $475,000. Go, whose clinic represents 60 of them, doubts they’ll get a dime. They may get satisfaction. Reach Edges columnist Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

says, chances are you’re more willing to accept less than you’re entitled to when employers say, "That’s just the way it is." The report’s findings: 43 per cent of the restaurant workers earned less than minimum wage, 57 per cent didn’t get vacation pay, and 20 per cent were owed wages. Faced with yawning gaps in provincial enforcement, the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto and other groups are encouraging volunteers to talk to Chinese-speaking workers about their rights. In the early 1990s, Ontario had a Wage Protection Fund which, if it hadn’t been erased, could have paid the Winli employees. The catalyst for the fund was another clinic case,

10 BUSINESS
A man of time HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com
W
atch repairman Shane Ede is hunched over a 1960s IWC Schaffhausen wrist watch in his apartment on Triller Avenue in Parkdale, his eyes mere millimetres away from the most intricate portions of the watch, placing small pieces back where they belong. He’s trying to fix its stem, the component which allows the owner to wind the watch to the correct time. This is what he does seven days a week. The 69-year-old hunkers down in front of his desk in his bedroom for hours at a time engrossed in repairing everything from pocket watches to mantle clocks and everything in between. He’s Shane the watch whisperer and has been for the past 41 years. From antique Rolexes, to Omegas to Swiss Military watches, if it’s broken, chances are Shane is the man to can fix it. Up until four years ago, he got the majority of his business from dealers, but that all changed when a customer wrote a glowing Yelp review. Since then the referrals just kept rolling in. "It just took off. Kaboom! Thousands of people found me on the internet," Shane said. "People have sent (watches) and travelled here for me to fix watches from India and Venezuela who said they’d found me online. It’s bizarre. "The irony of this isn’t lost on Shane. He calls his business a "dying hobby" that is as traditional as a shoe cobbler. And yet he’s found a way, albeit accidentally, to thrive in the modern, digital age with the help of watch forums and reviews found on the internet for those who know where to look. "Isn’t it wild?" he says laughing. He started out fixing watches as a side gig while he taught English composition for business students at Ryerson University in ’76. He was an apprentice to an older watch repairman in the city after he took in a clock for repair for his mother. Six months later he opened his own home business and never looked back. "All of sudden 10 years has gone by then 20 years and all of a sudden I really know what I’m doing now, all of a sudden my fingers are like a ballet. You can almost watch them do their job and that takes over," Shane explains. "I don’t know how to describe it. It’s something that’s just too much fun."
Shane Ede is breathing new life into an old trade, thanks to the internet
