Christian Resource Centre has new digs - and name JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Having settled into its new digs in a pristine building at 40 Oak St., the CRC is looking forward to the opportunities that will come along with the ongoing revitalization of Regent Park. The organization is now in its 50th year serving the community in the area. Long known as the Christian Resource Centre, it is moving toward the CRC moniker to better reflect the fact that it serves a wide array of people from all faiths. The centre offers two main streams of programming – food

support and housing – and showcased the many services it provides at a recent open house. “As part of the redevelopment of Regent Park, we’ve been able to move into this new building and now in addition to our meal, food and gardening programs, we’re able to provide 87 units of what we call deeply affordable housing,” said CRC fund development manager Bruce Voogd. “Affordable housing is defined at 80 per cent of market rent, but the people who live with us can’t afford that. Mooredale Concert homecoming for Canadian Brass founding member JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

Photo/BO HUANG

From top: Canadian Brass members Chuck Daellenbach (tuba), Achilles Liarmakopoulos (trombone), Bernhard Scully (horn), Christopher Coletti (trumpet), and Caleb Hudson (trumpet).

After a career spanning more than 40 years that has seen him play venues around the world, Canadian Brass tuba player and founding member Chuck Daellenbach is looking forward to playing a homecoming show of sorts. Daellenbach co-founded the brass ensemble back in 1970 when he met trombonist Gene Watts and the two decided to stretch the boundaries of the brass music repertoire. “We were classically-trained brass players and we both decided we wanted to play professional brass chamber music, but nobody was making a living playing brass chamber music,” Daellenbach recalled. The greatest challenge, particularly in the quintet’s early days, came in finding music arranged specifically for brass instruments. Most commonly, brass instruments are part of a larger orchestra, with Daellenbach’s specialty – the tuba – particularly playing a backing role. “Each instrument has its certain role and the tuba is certainly typically part of an ensemble or orchestra,” he said. “People who get into the violin often want to be soloists, same with people who play the flute or the piano. With the tuba, you’d

have a very hard life if you wanted to be a soloist.” Despite its perceived limitations, Daellenbach fell in love with the tuba at a young age. His immersion in the instrument came about out of necessity. “My father was a band director and after everyone picked trumpets and clarinets and flutes, as you might expect, he had a hard time getting kids to play the larger instruments, so I was conscripted,” he said. While the Canadian Brass may not have started out with the same wealth of musical options as more traditional ensembles, they took a masterpiece approach to their playlists, relying on standards such as Bach’s Fugue in G Minor. They wanted to branch out, however, for their own sake as much as for the sake of those who came to see them play. “We had to take a look at everything and create a program that would appeal to a broad audience,” Daellenbach said. “We mixed together various genres – it wasn’t just classical, it was early jazz, and at kids’ shows we would start out with (arrangements of) pop songs. We always play music that’s known and accessible.” The quintet is also known for their audience interaction, something

that was hardly de rigeur when they started up in 1970. “These days, artists across the board are expected to communicate, but that wasn’t the style at the time,” Daellenbach said. “For us, it was part of the excitement of our performance, with those shows being like a big laboratory with the thrill of the chase as we looked for what worked.” The Canadian Brass’ fun and interactive style has served them well over the years, earning them a loyal following in Canada as well as abroad. They tour regularly and have performed twice for Queen Elizabeth II. Daellenbach, who lives in the Rosedale area, is looking forward to his ensemble’s upcoming show at Mooredale House. “Mooredale’s been an important part of my family’s daily life – my kids have been involved in Mooredale programs over the years, so it’ll be fun to play there,” he said. “It’s only fair.” The Canadian Brass will play the MacMillan Theatre as part of the Mooredale Concerts series on Sunday, April 27 at 3:15 p.m, with an interactive one-hour concert for youngsters aged six to 15 at 1:15.

Young entrepreneurs get a taste of sleeping on the street JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com A group of 50 up-and-coming young professionals got a brief taste of what life on the street is like as Covenant House hosted its first Sleep Out: Next Generation late last week. The event is an offshoot of the downtown youth shelter’s annual Executive Sleep Out, which sees high-profile business and community leaders sleep on the streets for a night. Sleep Out: Next Generation gave a younger group a chance to experience the same thing, raising awareness around the issue of youth homelessness while also bringing in more than $160,000 for Covenant House. Those who attended said a night sleeping – or trying to sleep – on Toronto’s streets served as a huge eye-opener. “Sleeping on the ground was definitely not fun,” said Simply Green

Homes Inc. CEO Lawrence Krimker. “And when you’d finally start dozing off and were in that limbo (between wakefulness and sleep) you’d get a gust of wind hitting you in the face.” Krimker noted, as uncomfortable as his night on the street was, he was comforted by the knowledge that he would be able to sleep in his own bed the next night – something too many young people cannot say. “I thought the entire time about how fortunate I am for the things I normally take for granted,” he said. Krimker is no stranger to struggles. He grew up in a single-parent home, in subsidized housing where his single mother had to work two jobs to make ends meet. After Thursday’s event, he plans to continue working with Covenant House. “I’m going to reach back out to them and try to help youth in transition through my company and work as a mentor,” he said.

Restaurateur Trevor Wilkinson, left, Hub International Partner Alan Hollingsworth, Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko, entrepreneur Lawrence Krimker, Bay Street Search founder Kristina Pearce, Caldwell Partners International partner Jeffrey Freeborough and Covenant House executive director Bruce Rivers participate in Covenant House’s recent Sleep Out: Next Generation.

Fellow par ticipant Trevor Wilkinson, who owns Trevor Kitchen and Bar and co-owns the Tavern by Trevor, was similarly impressed with the event. He has worked with Covenant House for years, participating in the organization’s Cooking for Life program.

“I’ve met a lot of kids there and they’re tough as nails, but for good reason,” he said. “The pavement was pretty unforgiving, but we were actually pretty sheltered compared to what a lot of these kids face.” He added he was shocked upon meeting the youth at Covenant House to learn that many of them

became homeless after being kicked out by their parents due to their sexual orientation. “That was a scary thing to learn,” he said. Covenant House executive director Bruce Rivers noted Thursday’s event began with supper provided by Covenant House and a tour of the facility, during which participants were able to speak with homeless youth and heard a presentation by Toronto police Chief Bill Blair. “They talked about life at Covenant House, what brought some of the youth to be living on the street and where they’re headed now,” he said. “It was a huge awareness raiser.” The participants collected pledges for sleeping outside, with the more than $160,000 raised over the course of the evening enough to subsidize Covenant House’s programs in full for two weeks.

What transit vision will resonate with provincial voters?

Write us

H

ow to pay for transit expansion – it’s the multi-billion-dollar question. Speaking at the Toronto Region Board of Trade Monday, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne pledged that a greater portion of the gas tax (one that’s already collected by the province) would go toward specific transit projects. Combined with other funds, that reallocation commitment amounts to $29 billion over 10 years. There aren’t many further details, beyond that a little more than half that money would go to projects in the Greater Toronto Area. Response to Wynne’s pledge from the likes of Metrolinx chair Robert Prichard and representatives from CivicAction Alliance was optimistic, but cautious – and for good reason. Specific details haven’t been announced, for one. We also know that all the Big Move projects in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area need $2 billion annually over 25 years. our view Monday’s funding commitment amounts to less than a Pledge greeted third of that target. Among the in Toronto waiting for with optimism projects those funds is a relief subway line to take the strain off an and caution overburdened Yonge line. Finally, Wynne’s minority government is on shaky ground and is hardly in prime position to act on this pledge. Her governing Liberals will need support from either the Progressive Conservatives or the NDP to survive an upcoming budget vote at Queen’s Park and avoid being plunged into a June election. Simply put, she has the best platform right now to make those kind of big pledges. Somewhere along the line – maybe soon, maybe later – the voter will decide. So the premier has sent a message clear in financial support if nothing else. The big number will resonate. The Tories’ focus on building subways may resonate with voters. The NDP hasn’t set out exactly what they’d do for transit and how they’d pay for it. And it’s the NDP that matters most here. Presuming there’s a provincial budget soon, it’ll come down to whether the NDP supports that budget that determines how much cautiously optimistic transit planners can count on the Liberal-promised provincial funds. Turning down the budget sends us to an election and all bets are off.

Pre-election transit promises from Kathleen Wynne Liberals sweet, but prospects bleak

I

n the politics of commuting in Toronto, there is nothing quite as heartbreaking as a transit plan near the eve of an election. The promise is as sweet as the prospects are bleak. But the stakes are high enough that you cannot look away. Rob Ford played with the hearts of Scarborough residents when he promised to stop the Sheppard LRT and turn it into a subway just a few years ago. And a few more years prior to that, Ontario premier Bob Rae and his successor Mike Harris broke the hearts of City of York residents, when Rae actually funded and then Harris cancelled a subway along Eglinton Avenue. Construction was already underway by the time that happened, proving that even a sure thing can become dubious in the

david nickle the city hands of shifting governments. Promises Now Premier Kathleen Wynne has stepped up, making what sounds like a dubious promise from the get-go: $15 billion flowing to transit and transportation improvements in the Greater Toronto Area (from $29 billion, provincewide), from... somewhere. Gas tax revenue will have something to do with it, as will a portion of the HST derived from fuel tax. And there will be added debt. Further details of how this money is to be raised will be revealed in the sure-to-be-defeated 2014 provincial budget coming a

few weeks from now. The money, if it ever comes, would sure be nice. More than nice, in fact: funding on that scale is essential, if Toronto and the region is to remain livable and economically viable. It might even be worth a bigger deficit to see it go ahead. There is a more immediate and less costly plan at work with the April 14 announcement: embarrassing the provincial Progressive Conservatives and New Democrats, as they get set to presumably defeat the government and force a spring election. Wynne made that clear at the announcement, when she pointed out the plan will require allies – and if those allies aren’t in the Legislature, they could well be voters. If Wynne can success-

fully portray a vote against the government as a vote against transit funding, then she’ll have a shot at the ear of every commuter struggling for breath and dignity on the YongeUniversity subway line. Heartbreak It won’t hurt her a bit that the mayor’s race in Toronto is also shaping itself into a marathon meditation on public transit. Unfortunately for Wynne and for Toronto, the Ontario Liberals are entering this race with many other well-documented disadvantages. If transit expansion is truly to be tied to a Liberal victory in 2014... well, that would be yet another heartbreak.

CRC plans to boost its food programs >>>from page 1 people living here pay between $150 and $500 a month, depending on their situation.” Many of the residents of 40 Oaks are dealing with mental health or addiction issues, or have lived on the streets for years, meaning the housing provided is a much-needed support. The CRC also runs a rooming house just east of the Don Valley with room for 10 people. The housing is a huge benefit to residents such as artist Neil Amitay, who has lived in the building since it opened. “Everyone in the building knows everyone else, and people living in the building can come down here and get food,” he said. “I don’t use the meal programs, but they let me set up my art here and there’s really good, cheap laundry which is great.” The CRC’s food programs include free community breakfasts on Mondays, Wednesdays

Meagan’s Walk raised more than $3.1 million in support of SickKids >>>from page 1 culture – as a means of wishing Meagan a speedy recovery. “I started doing things on my own after hearing about Meagan and I realized people were as frustrated as I was by not being able to do anything,” Wiley said at the Tuesday launch. “I talked to my teacher in my Grade 8 class and the teacher said to talk to the principal to see about getting the school involved.” The school quickly jumped on board, with students of all ages – from Meagan’s kindergarten class to Wiley’s Grade 8 class – making cranes. “We stopped counting at around 2,500,” Wiley said. “People kept bringing them in and other people kept putting them all over the school so it was impossible to keep track.” Meagan’s mother, Denise Bebenek, said the support of Meagan’s schoolmates helped bring about the entire Meagan’s Walk concept, which has now brought in more than $3.1 million in support of SickKids and pediatric brain

tumour research. “In my heart, I truly believe this first crane ceremony (at Our Lady of Sorrows) was where the seed was planted for (the Meagan’s Walk) campaign,” she said. Bebenek noted about 58 schools have signed up for Meagan’s Walk Spirit Days. She is proud Meagan’s legacy continues to make a difference in the lives of others. “Sadly, there is a Meagan in

every school,” she said. “We’re here to collectively change the course of history for children with brain tumours and other forms of cancer.” SickKids pediatric neurooncologist Dr. Ute Bartels said while she never met Meagan personally, she and her colleagues have gotten to know her story and have rallied around the cause. “Brain tumours in children are, fortunately, quite rare

but when they happen, it’s quite a significant disease,” she said. Ann Ramsewak’s nineyear-old son Anthony was diagnosed with brain stem ganglioglioma – a brain

tumour in an inoperable location – in 2010. His tumour had continued growing, but following 72 months of treatment, it has stabilized. “Without the research being

done, there wouldn’t have been much help out there for him,” Ramsewak said.

Celebrating the steel pan sounds of the Caribbean with Toronto students JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com For the past 25 years, the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) has enriched its music programming by giving students a taste of the Caribbean. The TDSB has hosted its annual Panfest celebration, with students playing steel pan drums, every year since 1989. While the initiative started out small, it has grown to the point where about 700 students from 33 schools now take part in steel pan instruction and performance. “For some of the schools, it’s a credit course,” said Panfest co-ordinator and TDSB instructional leader of music Alkiviadia Leontarakis. “It’s a great form of musical learning and it gives kids a different opportunity to begin their musicianship.” Leontarakis noted the popularity of steel pan drum-

ming has grown in leaps and bounds in elementary and secondary schools alike. “They can continue to play (steel pan) or it can be a vehicle to further build their musical skills,” he said. Students from Winona Drive Public School, Runnymede Collegiate Institute, Cedarvale Collegiate Institute and Carleton Village Sports and Wellness Academy joined professional steel pan players to kick off this year’s Panfest with a concert at the

Bickford Centre last week. Dr. Vidhya Gyan TotaMaharaj, Consul General of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, was on hand for the launch of Panfest and spoke of the steel pan’s humble roots in her home country. “Our musical instrument, the steel pan, was invented in Trinidad and Tobago many, many years ago when it was considered making noise,” she said. “Now there are over 120 (steel pan) orchestras all over the world.”

Toronto Central CCAC celebrates 50 years of compassionate home care Launch of Heroes in the Home Caregiver Recognition Awards To mark the 50th anniversary of delivering home care in Toronto, Toronto Central CCAC has launched the Heroes in the Home Caregiver Recognition Awards. The awards will honour both paid and unpaid caregivers in the Toronto Central community — the unsung heroes who give of themselves to help others live with comfort, dignity and independence. The awards will recognize all types of caregivers, whether a family member, neighbour, friend or health care worker who selflessly provide skilled and compassionate care. The awards will be presented on May 27, 2014. Nominations can be made until April 25. Toronto Central CCAC also launched a Facebook page -- www.facebook.com/torontocentralCCAC -- to promote the awards and share stories of dedicated caregivers. Every day, caregivers in our community help others, whether is it through warm smiles, gentle hands, shared laughter or caring expertise. Caregivers are people like Paul, a superintendent in a Toronto apartment building who works to ensure those in his building are well taken care of whether it’s arranging for a ride

to and from hospital or making sure the refrigerator is stocked with healthy food to aid in recovery time. Paul is an informal caregiver for many, who acts out of selflessness and genuine commitment to making things better for those in his community. Caregivers are people like Creselda, a personal support worker, who provides care for stroke victim John. In addition to helping him bathe and dress, Creselda was taught how to help John perform exercises to regain his strength. Because of her relentless belief in John, he is now able to get himself in and out of bed with little help from his wife – who otherwise does everything – and he can even walk a little. John and his wife, Shirley, are very grateful for the creative solutions and support of the care team. It is stories like these that show how caregivers are the everyday heroes in our midst. Caregivers

are compassionate, respectful and empathetic. They have a tremendous impact on the lives of others by helping enhance their quality of life and connecting them with the care they need. Heroes in the Home is an opportunity to recognize caregivers, our everyday heroes like Creselda and Paul, for the exceptional role they play in our community. You can nominate as many individuals as you like by completing the nomination form on our website, healthcareathome.ca/ torontocentral. Please notify your nominee in advance that you have nominated them. As well, all nominees will receive an invitation to attend the ceremony. All nominees will receive a certificate of appreciation at the ceremony. For more information please call 416-217-3820 ext. 2476 or email heroesinthehome @toronto.ccac-ont.ca.
