Quirky bassoon band making BuskerFest debut

JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Considering the name they’ve made for themselves busking at various venues throughout Toronto over the past few years, it is perhaps surprising that 2015 will mark Das Fagott Mannschaft’s inaugural stint at the city’s biggest busking event, the Toronto International BuskerFest for Epilepsy. Das Fagott Mannschaft (German for “The Bassoon Team”) consists of four bassoonists and a percussionist. As one might expect of a band devoted to one oft-overlooked instrument, the ensemble is notable for its quirkiness. “We’re a bassoon quartet with a bit of an edge to it,” said band member and downtown Toronto resident Catherine Magowan. The quartet met while studying music and decided to do something distinct with their talents in order to make a little extra money as they honed their skills. Rather than sticking to

classical pieces, the ensemble plays an assortment of popular hits spanning a number of genres. Their repertoire touches on performers ranging from Irving Berlin to Nina Simone to Nirvana to Lady

Gaga. “We cover songs going all the way back to Tin Pan Alley,” Magowan said. “A lot of people like our more modern covers…it’s not something you expect to hear coming from a

bassoon quartet.” Of course, rearranging songs for four bassoons provides its share of challenges, particularly when trying to capture the sounds of other instruments. In the four years

– Catherine Magowan

since the band mates came together, however, they have learned a few tricks. “It does get difficult, but we’ve learned to delegate and play off of each other’s strengths,” Magowan said. The softer sound typically associated with the bassoon creates yet another obstacle for Das Fagott Mannschaft. “It can be a drawback because the sound (the bassoon) makes tends to blend with other sounds,” Magowan said. “It’s not an instrument that really lends itself to a solo – it’s always an instrument that people who play other instruments want accompanying them.” For BuskerFest, the ensemble is planning on bringing some gear to help amplify their sound and help them stand out in the bustle of the incredibly popular event.

As for the band’s name itself, Magowan said its risqué tone – and its innocent meaning – suits Das Fagott Mannschaft’s sensibilities perfectly. “One of our dear friends suggested that name to us as a joke, but we took it,” she said. “It’s ‘bassoon’ in English and ‘basson’ in French, but in a lot of other languages, it’s ‘fagott.’ It’s definitely unexpected and it suits us as kind of an underground bassoon band.” Das Fagott Mannschaft will be part of the Toronto International BuskerFest for Epilepsy this coming weekend. The event will see dozens of acts, from acrobats to magicians to musicians, taking over the Downtown Yonge neighbourhood from today through to Sunday. Festival admission is by donation to Epilepsy Toronto, with individual acts passing around hats following their performances to cover their own costs.

Toronto Zombie Walk is dead due to lack of funding Organizers hosting funeral and wake on Saturday HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com A bullet has been put through the brain of the Toronto Zombie Walk & Halloween Parade as organizers have cancelled the popular undead event due to lack of funding. “We’ve been doing it for a dozen years and it’s sad, but it might be time to move onto new projects,” said Stefania Zanini, chief spokesperson for the volunteer-run event. The group lost about $10,000 in grants from various provincial tourism agencies and despite crowdfunding efforts, it just wasn’t enough to keep the event alive. “Not getting that grant just put our threshold of what we could handle as volunteers beyond our capabilities,” she said. “We already do a lot of fundraising, but this would be

a massive undertaking.” Zanini said she believes the reason why the walk didn’t receive funding this year is because “the funds just ran out.” The cost to run a successful Zombie Walk, Zanini told The Mirror, is between $40,000 to $50,000, which covers the administrative costs such as road closures, city permits, insurance as well as payment for bands that show up to provide live entertainment. Last year the walk managed to corral 15,000 zombies to groan and moan down the streets of Toronto. “If that’s the way we end, that’s a beautiful way to end, with 15,000 people sharing a common interest and a walk,” Zanini said. Zanini still doesn’t know if the walk will return next year, should they get more funding and enough sponsors.

Staff file photo/Brian B. Bettencourt

Pam Sloan plays her part in the Bloods-N-Suds Zombie Car Wash held to raise funds for last year’s Toronto Zombie Walk. The walk is cancelled this year, but organizers are hosting a funeral and wake.

“There’s always a chance,” she said. If it does return she still wants to stay true to the event mandate to keep it a free event. “Most of the sponsors who want to come in, want

to charge money,” she said. “That’s why we’ve always gone with small sponsors who are really loyal and really wonderful about respecting our goal to create a free event.” To honour the cadavers that have swarmed the

streets of Toronto for the past 12 years in cringe-worthy zombie makeup and bloodsoaked attire, there will be a funeral and a wake for the event Aug. 29. “We’re hoping it will be a celebration and a reflection,” she said. The funeral will be held at The Royal Theatre, 608 College St., at noon. Zanini tried to host the funeral in Trinity Bellwoods Park, the original location of the zombie walk, but had issues with getting permits from the city. She said the city feared 15,000 zombies would show up at the park and that it wouldn’t be able to handle that kind of turn out. “It’s a valid concern and I understand their fear, but that won’t happen. Our zombies are pretty respectful,” she said. She said if the Zombie Walk is put to rest for good, the city will wholeheartedly miss the event because it brought people of all races and backgrounds together.

“What I saw, in my six years as a volunteer, was this creation of family, of 15,000 sharing a walk,” she said. “It was about diversity and inclusion that didn’t have to be religiously based or culturally based; it’s just a sharing a common theme. “The city will lose a lot because there aren’t that many events that are free and inclusive.” At the funeral, zombies will have a chance to contribute mementos of their favourite Zombie Walk memories to a time capsule. As a bonus thank you, the first 100 people to put something in the capsule will receive free entry into the Canadian National Exhibition where the wake will be held. Full Zombie attire is encouraged. “It’ll be a celebration of both life and death,” she said.

T

hirty years ago this summer, Toronto lost its innocence when an eight-year-old girl named Nicole was abducted from her Etobicoke apartment building. Children didn’t walk to school alone anymore. Parents looked to strangers with suspicion and filled their kids’ heads with dire consequences if they dared roam carefree. The first Nicole’s Run took place last week to mark the anniversary of Nicole Morin’s long-unsolved missing child case. Though a tragic story itself, the event focused on the positive, offering an opportunity to fundraise for the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (CCCP) and a chance to keep Nicole’s case – and those of other missing children – top of mind in the hopes of generating new leads. After 30 years, police insist hope our view still exists for answers. Shaun Narine, superintendent of Toronto Be proactive Police 22 Division, told Metroland Media Toronto: “As with any missin protecting ing child, you never stop looking.” The case remains open and your child police have been working nonstop since, trying to find some evidence that would help them solve the mystery. Tips are always welcome, no matter how seemingly insignificant or – perhaps by now, after all these years – fuzzy on detail they may be. Nicole’s Run also serves as a reminder that children shouldn’t be afraid, but instead should be taught to be vigilant about their own safety. Society is a much different place, it’s true, but as long as children and parents are educated, innocence need not be sacrificed. CCCP’s website www.missingkids.ca offers tips on child safety and points out that the traditional advice “don’t talk to strangers” is outdated and ineffective in reducing a child’s risk of abduction and victimization. It’s only in the rarest cases that children are abducted by strangers, and more often, child abductions are committed by people who are known to the child. Visit the site to learn more, including how to protect your child against offenders lurking on the internet. Teaching your children these safety tips in a fun way can make the difference between a child who fears the world, and one who stands confidently before it. Practice “what-if” scenarios and get your child’s friends involved. In honour of Nicole, her family and those families that continue to grieve the loss of their missing children, be proactive in protecting yours.

Reflecting on big strong jets at Billy Bishop Airport and its impact on city

A

fter having flown Porter Airlines for the first time this past weekend, there’s no doubt in my mind: Robert Deluce’s little airline flying out of the Billy Bishop Airport would benefit from a jet-sized runway. My trip to Boston and back ran late on both ends: going out, because the little turboprop Dash 8 that I was to leave on was laid up with mechanical problems at another airport, and Porter couldn’t wrangle another aircraft in time. And then I bumped again – voluntarily, having missed my connection – because the plane needed to shed some passengers for the wet runway. Weather made for another delay on the way back. Big strong jets in Porter’s fleet would be a benefit – at least a benefit to travellers

david nickle the city like me, trying desperately to keep their blood pressure in check as they miss connections and arrive home past bedtime. The question of what benefits – or more to the point impacts – jet aircraft will have on the city and its waterfront remain open. In 2014, Toronto council decided to keep those questions open, resisting pressure from Porter and PortsToronto (the new name for the Toronto Port Authority) to give a preliminary OK to start work on extending runways and removing the ban on jet aircraft. Council sent the supplicants back to the drawing board, asking for clarity on some details and demanding informa-

tion in new areas before continuing the conversation any further. The conversation will be coming up again this year and next – and is getting ready to start, as a pair of reports from Waterfront Toronto and PortsToronto offer a checklist of measures to apply to public consultation, public health and the environmental assessment of the jet aircraft option. It is quite a list – a litany really, which points to the flaws in the fast-and-loose process so far. It will be very interesting to see what council makes of the plan when it finally comes forward later this year. When that happens, it will more than likely come forward without the guidance of our mayor, who has a conflict of interest on the matter owing to his son’s employment at

the airport. That will leave a similarly-constituted council enjoying a similar level of autonomy to their predecessors in 2014, when former mayor Rob Ford was effectively out of the debate for different reasons. Assuming the proponents of the expansion take the time to get their ducks in a row, things could very easily tilt the other way. But late on Sunday night, riding the brand-new people mover back from the island through that justopened pedestrian tunnel, I couldn’t help but think that another solution to the Porter dilemma is much simpler, at least on a personal level: next time I fly to Boston, take a TTC bus to Pearson. There are plenty of jets to choose from there.

Open house and barbecue on Saturday >>>from page 1 light for women with nowhere else to turn. Anne Topp, Street Haven’s executive director, has lived on the streets and understands the need for services like the ones her agency provides. “I totally know what it feels like to have people look at you like you don’t exist,” she said. “People don’t understand the hardships so many women face that can lead to them becoming homeless. They’re blamed for being lazy.” Street Haven was founded by the late Peggy Ann Walpole, a Toronto nurse who noticed that women who sought emergency hospital care due to being abused or dealing with addictions were typically treated and discharged within a matter of days, at which point they were forced to return to the lives that brought them to hospital in the first place. She rented out a room in the decrepit Atlanta Hotel in downtown Toronto, keeping it open as a drop-in centre. A few years later, with demand for Street Haven’s services peaking, Walpole purchased a home on Pembroke Street down-

Now, Street Haven provides shelter, meals, employment support, harm reduction programs and other social services, all of which play a vital role in helping homeless and at-risk women work toward better lives. “It all begins with our 50-bed emergency shelter and more than 30

apartments of supportive housing, which means there’s someone there to provide the residents with support they may need,” Topp said. “We also have Grant House, which provides residential services with supports for women with addiction, and our learning centre to help them upgrade their education.” Street Haven’s services have provided a lifeline for countless women – in 2014 alone, there were 15,855 stays at its emergency shelter based on the City of Toronto occupancy report, and the organization served 76,440 fresh meals and 50,960 healthy snacks to women who would otherwise have gone hungry. One resident, Christine, has recently begun using Street Haven’s services for the second time and said she wouldn’t have known where to turn when she came to Toronto from Regina after the breakdown of her marriage. “I came here and didn’t know where to go,” she said. “I had $30 in my pocket and I wound up at Street Haven for five days. They showed me where to find support in the community.” She returned again after another tumultuous marriage ended, leaving

Similar to choosing between contact lenses or glasses, you can decide with your hearing professional which hearing aid style would best suit you. Both styles have approximately the same performance and functions, but are fitted to the ear differently.

Service Held at the Centre of Excellence Glendon Campus, York University 2275 Bayview Ave, Toronto FaithRevolution.ca

It’s almost a shame this technology isn’t more visible! Open-fit and Invisible-In-the-Canal (IIC) hearing aids are smaller and more beautiful than ever, striking the perfect balance between size and performance. The elegant and highly discreet open-fit hearing aid fits perfectly on top of your ear, and the thin tube in your ear canal is designed to disappear against your skin. Olympic Games have higher profile but World Fair lasts several months >>>from page 1 ing group looking into the feasibility of Toronto making a bid for the 2025 World’s Fair (or Expo), pointing out doing so would both showcase the city and serve as a catalyst for more infrastructure development, much as the Pan Am Games made infrastructure upgrades necessary. “It can be a catalytic event that would help us revitalize the waterfront,” said the

councillor, who noted the Port Lands would be an ideal site to host Expo 2025. “There’s no event bigger in the world than an Expo, and the anticipated audience in terms of Expo visitors here in Toronto is 40 million.” She pointed out because Expo pavilions are increasingly modular, they could be moved from the Port Lands to other areas of the city and converted into new

community centres, libraries, daycares and other muchneeded facilities. Wong-Tam added there would be plenty of additional impacts beyond the tourism dollars and the boost to infrastructure. “We would get to define what Expo looks like, we would invite the international community to participate and enjoy our city and we would build trade and cultural con-

nections,” she said. Beyond that, the event would help speed up the naturalization of the Don River and could lead to additional housing – with associated transit benefits – in the Port Lands. At this point, talks surrounding a potential bid revolve mostly around the feasibility of hosting such an event. Before submitting a bid, however, Canada would have to rejoin the Bureau of

International Expositions, a group of nations it has left under the current federal government. Toronto Board of Trade president and CEO Jan De Silva said businesses in the city would stand to benefit immensely should Toronto host Expo 2025. “When your focus is on a major world event, it’s an accelerator for getting major infrastructure projects going,”

she said. De Silva added the World’s Fair and the Olympics would offer benefits that would be similar in some ways – notably by forcing the hands of governments to invest in Toronto – but different in others. “The Olympics might have a bit of a higher profile, but the World’s Fair takes place over a much longer duration (lasting several months),” she said.

Varsity Centre hosts kick-off of university sports It’s back to school this Aug. 29 to 30 weekend – or more accurately back to the school stadiums for university sports teams. Indeed, while the classrooms may be dark until after Labour Day, Ontario University Athletics (OUA) kicks off its schedule in football and soccer with all three Toronto universities in action. SOCCER ON SATURDAY ... Soccer is first off the bat with the Varsity Centre on Bloor Street hosting an all-downtown Toronto showdown for the season opener between the University of Toronto Varsity Blues and the visiting Ryerson Rams – women’s game

at 1 p.m., men’s game at 3:15 p.m. The York Lions kick off their schedule on the road at McMaster in Hamilton. FOOTBALL ON SUNDAY ... On Sunday, the football season begins for U of T and York U (Ryerson doesn’t have a football team). Both host 1 p.m. home games, the U of T hosting McMaster; York hosting Laurier. And both teams are looking to shake droughts, not having tasted playoff action since 2004 for the York Lions and 1995 for the Varsity Blues. Their 46th annual Red and Blue Bowl Game is slated for Friday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. York is hosting U of T this year.

Home safety tips for seniors Many seniors today enjoy the ability to live comfortably in their homes. With the right supports and assistance, such as the care provided through the Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC), the elderly are able remain at home for as long as possible. While living at home is the desire of many seniors, doing so often comes with challenges. Healthrelated limitations as well as the very real possibility of injury have consequences for those who are of an advanced age. Fortunately, there are some simple things that can be done to decrease the possibility of injury or difficulty at home. 1. Good Lighting As we age, our eyesight often becomes compromised. Medical issues such as glaucoma and cataracts make it difficult to see as clearly as we once did. Seniors often have difficulty seeing in dim light, so make sure that your elderly loved one has adequately bright lighting in their homes. In doing so, you will decrease the likelihood of an unexpected fall or stumble. 2. Non-Slip Flooring While hardwood floors may look nice, they are a frequent cause of slips and falls by older people. As well, tiled or floors that are covered with throw rugs can also pose a safety hazard. To decrease the possibility of falls, make sure to install carpet or nonslip flooring. Also, consider the use of treads on stairs or

high-traffic areas. 3. Caregiver Support Having someone look out for the elderly is a surefire way of assuring that they remain safe. If you know of a neighbour, family member, or friend who is in need of assistance, offer to lend a hand. This may include helping with chores around the home that may be difficult or potentially unsafe for an older person. 4. Medication Management Many seniors have various medications that need to be taken on a daily basis, which can lead to error. Taking the wrong medications or forgetting whether the correct dosage has been taken is a very real possibility for the elderly. Keep your loved ones safe by the simple use of pill boxes or similar supports. Also consid-

er a simple checklist or tracking system that can be filled out daily. 5. Assistive Devices Seniors are often in need of assistive devices in order to be mobile within their homes, as well as outside. Wheelchairs, walkers, the use of medic-alerttype tools and similar items can make a considerable difference in the lives of those who need them. The Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre works with a variety of companies that supply these types of items to seniors in need. Contact the CCAC for details. For more information about supports for seniors, contact the Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) at (416) 506-9888 or visit www.healthcareathome.ca
