Spirit of ‘Nonnina’ still inspiring monthly meals JUSTIN SKINNER
jskinner@insidetoronto.com For years, there was always a seat at Tina Luciano’s table for whoever wanted to drop in for a bite to eat. Now, a group of volunteers are keeping that tradition alive with monthly meals at Scadding Court Community Centre. Luciano, known to many as Nonnina (Italian for young grandmother), was a longstanding member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in downtown Toronto and was beloved by the community for her warm and giving nature. When she died of pancreatic cancer in 1995, her

close friend Joan Yim decided to keep her legacy going. “Her house was always open,” Yim said of her longtime friend. “She loved having people over and everyone in the neighbourhood knew they were always welcome at her table.” After Luciano’s death, a small group of volunteers began walking the streets of Toronto in her memory, handing out sandwiches and hot chocolate to the homeless. It was intended as a way to maintain Nonnina’s spirit of generosity, but the volunteers soon found it was not a particularly efficient way to help those in need. >>>NONNINA’S, page 2

With plenty of change likely in store at the intersection of Bathurst and Bloor streets, councillor Mike Layton and the City of Toronto are looking to ensure guidelines are in place to keep new development reasonable. City staff are undertaking a study of the “four corners”, a task which arose out of a previous study designed to determine land use along Bathurst Street between Queen and Dupont streets. “It became clear the corner
of Bathurst and Bloor will likely see significant change in the next couple of years,” Layton said. The new study will look at a variety of factors, including improvements to public realm, open space, park land, heritage conservation, transit options including cycling and pedestrian connections, affordability and built form. While there are no current development applications in for the busy intersection, the sale of Honest Ed’s on the southwest corner virtually ensures one will be forthcoming.
