Spirit of ‘Nonnina’ still inspiring monthly meals JUSTIN SKINNER

jskinner@insidetoronto.com For years, there was always a seat at Tina Luciano’s table for whoever wanted to drop in for a bite to eat. Now, a group of volunteers are keeping that tradition alive with monthly meals at Scadding Court Community Centre. Luciano, known to many as Nonnina (Italian for young grandmother), was a longstanding member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in downtown Toronto and was beloved by the community for her warm and giving nature. When she died of pancreatic cancer in 1995, her

close friend Joan Yim decided to keep her legacy going. “Her house was always open,” Yim said of her longtime friend. “She loved having people over and everyone in the neighbourhood knew they were always welcome at her table.” After Luciano’s death, a small group of volunteers began walking the streets of Toronto in her memory, handing out sandwiches and hot chocolate to the homeless. It was intended as a way to maintain Nonnina’s spirit of generosity, but the volunteers soon found it was not a particularly efficient way to help those in need. >>>NONNINA’S, page 2

With plenty of change likely in store at the intersection of Bathurst and Bloor streets, councillor Mike Layton and the City of Toronto are looking to ensure guidelines are in place to keep new development reasonable. City staff are undertaking a study of the “four corners”, a task which arose out of a previous study designed to determine land use along Bathurst Street between Queen and Dupont streets. “It became clear the corner

of Bathurst and Bloor will likely see significant change in the next couple of years,” Layton said. The new study will look at a variety of factors, including improvements to public realm, open space, park land, heritage conservation, transit options including cycling and pedestrian connections, affordability and built form. While there are no current development applications in for the busy intersection, the sale of Honest Ed’s on the southwest corner virtually ensures one will be forthcoming. She loved to help and to see people happy.” Last Sunday, volunteers handed out more than 300 Christmas turkey hampers at Scadding Court Community Centre for families in need. Volunteers spent hours collecting and sorting the holiday food that went into each

hamper – along with toys and holiday gifts for children who would otherwise go without – before greeting donees at the centre from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Because Nonnina’s Table is run by volunteers, they are always in need of donations to help ensure the community is well-served. “We’re in the process of getting a charitable donation number, but for now we’re always looking for non-perishable food items and people can also make financial donations,” Yim said. Those looking to donate are asked to contact Joan Yim at ubdots@gmail.com or by phone at 647-833-7837.

Lawrence Park CI rugby star Ghislaine Landry looking forward to Pan Am Games JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

Photo/COURTESY

Canadian women’s sevens rugby team member Ghislaine Landry has just returned with the team from Dubai where they placed third. The squad is looking to win gold on home soil during the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games.

Fresh off a third-place finish in the Rugby World Sevens in Dubai, Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute grad Ghislaine Landry is looking forward to competing on home soil next year. Landry is a key member of the Canadian Women’s Rugby Sevens team, which has risen in recent years to become a force on the international circuit. The squad will be competing at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, giving the athlete a chance to showcase her skills in front of a friendly crowd. “I’m so excited; I’ve never been able to play at home,” she said. “My friends and family occasionally come to tournaments but it will

be great to be able to play in front of so many family members. I think I’ve already booked about 50 tickets.” Landry got her start in rugby while she was a student at Lawrence Park, taking after her older sister who had also played. She proved a natural at the sport and worked her way onto the provincial under-17 squad before earning spots on the provincial and national under-19 teams. “The older girls (at Lawrence Park) all coached the younger girls and they really helped me along,” she said. Landry has played both 15s and sevens, but prefers the latter, with fewer players on the pitch leaving plenty of open space for her to use her speed to full advantage. She counts her speed and agility alongside her status

as a veteran presence on her current squad as some of her key strengths. “We have a really good leadership group and all the senior players are a part of that, with each of us bringing our own leadership style,” she said. “We all take part in bringing along the younger girls, showing them the game and teaching them.” The former Forest Hill resident now lives year-round in British Columbia to train with the team. The women’s closeness has helped them immensely in improving their game, though Landry feels they still have more to give. “We finished third (in their recent early-December tournament in Dubai), which isn’t exactly what we wanted,” she said. “We had an unfortunate semifinal, but we were able to rally for the third-place

game.” Should the team continue to build on its current success, it could qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the first time women’s rugby will be an Olympic sport. Landry hopes that, paired with the squad’s Toronto 2015 appearance, inspires more young Canadian girls to take up rugby. “I just want to show people how exciting and good the women’s game is – how fast it is and how high the quality is,” she said. “If we get more girls involved at a younger age, we can keep building the team.” Rugby sevens gold medal game is scheduled for Sunday, July 12.

Let’s all make volunteering our resolution L

et’s make next year a banner year in Toronto for volunteering in the community. With 2015 almost upon us, it seems like a good time to issue this call. There’s still a little bit left in 2014 to ponder goals and expectations for the coming year – and perhaps include some time to give to a cause or organization of importance to you. Also, 2015 is a big year in Toronto. The Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games are coming to the city in July. It’s Canada’s largest multi-sport event. There are opportunities both before and during the Games, which will rely on some 23,000 volunteers to ensure things run smoothly. Visit the Pan Am Games website for more information. And Toronto is a city known for its diverse offerings of festivals and events. The city’s special events office our view regularly lists volunteer opporand is a good place to What can you tunities start for those who can commit do to help your their time to a specific event – as opposed to a more regular community? volunteer experience. But volunteering is not just about what’s good for a cause, an organization or the city. It’s about what’s good for us, too. When it comes to the positive developments that arise from volunteering, it is not merely a ‘one-way’ street. Volunteer opportunities represent more than just a chance to get involved in your community and help out. In many cases, volunteers acquire new skills and contacts during the course of their work. Volunteers acquire intangible benefits, too: a richer experience of life in the city and the satisfaction of knowing your efforts are helping your community. When we think about what kind of environment we want to live in, what improvements we want in our neighbourhoods and what connections we want to forge in our community, volunteering helps in all of those areas. William Osler Health Centre recently honoured seven of its volunteers who had compiled a staggering 50 years each of volunteering with its hospitals, including Etobicoke General. Let’s see what we can do in one year. Calls for volunteering – the ultimate commitment to our community – are all around us. Let’s answer the call – in greater numbers than ever.

Will library saga continue with budget submission? It’s too soon to be able to map out where all the political fights will be in the coming winter’s city hall budget process. But the Toronto Public Library Board has thrown down the gauntlet for the first big one. This shouldn’t be a surprise. There is something about our library system in this city that attracts duelling city councillors like nothing else. Last term, former budget chief Mike Del Grande instigated a minor skirmish when he wondered why so many DVDs and books were circulated in languages other than English. The same term, former budget committee vicechair Doug Ford made headlines by inventing the term lie-berry and disrespecting author Margaret Atwood, as he suggested closing a library in his ward to save some money. That was a Potemkin moment for bibliophiles

david nickle the city across the city to rise up and support their libraries. This time, the membership of the library board (most of whom were appointed under the Ford administration) is setting up for a fight that lands somewhere in between. Reduce security In their 2015 budget submission, they’ve elected to include a 40 per cent reduction in security service in branches across the city. The move would save $660,000 from the budget, bringing its submission down to a two per cent increase over last year. It would mean that in some branches, there would no longer be a security guard present. Library board chair Mike Foderick maintains those branches don’t need a

But it’s hard to imagine very many who send their children to libraries to study or their elderly parents there to read and socialize will be at all comfortable taking a chance on safety.

security guard, given their historic low level of incidents over the past number of years. For instance, at the Centennial Library branch, the security guard worked 27 hours a week in 2013, and over that year dealt with only a single incident. Perhaps there will be some library patrons comforted by that statistic. But it’s hard to imagine very many who send their children to libraries to study or their elderly parents there to read and socialize will be at all com-

fortable taking a chance on safety. The union representing library workers (which doesn’t, incidentally, represent the security guards) has already taken a stand on the issue, as a matter of workplace safety. If I were a betting columnist, I’d say that by the time this works its way through the budget process at city hall – and long before the budget actually makes it to the floor of council – there won’t be any change in the library system’s security complement. One doesn’t know why the library board didn’t save councillors the trouble and just leave matters be. For a service that a majority of Torontonians seem to regard as untouchable, it’s astounding politicians of certain stripes can’t seem to keep their hands off it.

Toronto Film School surprises Yellowknife preschoolers JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com When asked by a preschool class how princess dresses are made, students in the Toronto Film School’s fashion design program decided to offer up more than a simple, stock answer. The fashion design students received the request from preschoolers at École St.

Joseph School. in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Instead of simply writing back or sketching designs, they went all out, making not only a princess dress, but a prince suit and a princess nightgown. “Their class was doing a project on mail and how to send a letter and they wanted to know how to make a princess dress,” said Toronto Film

School faculty member Keith Richardson. “The students decided not to just send back a letter – they wanted to make these things and send them to the kids.” Toronto Film School student Ricardo Welch said the preschoolers’ letter came as a complete surprise. “It was kind of random – out of all the fashion schools they could have written to, they

found ours and we wanted to do something special,” he said. The design and creation of the outfits was a team effort, with a small group of students taking up the challenge and making the garments during their reading week. “ We wanted them to have a visual and to be able to actually hold the pieces and feel them,” said Toronto Film School student Habib Teimuri. The youngsters could do more than that. Because Toronto Film School students made the garments in children’s sizes, the preschoolers at École St. Joseph School were actually able to wear them. Of course, there were some challenges inherent in creating prince and princess outfits for young children. “We’re used to working on actual adult proportions, so we had to change some details when it came to bustlines and contoured areas,” Welch said. “It was a take-itas-you-go kind of thing where we learned on the spot.” Fellow student Aravin Rajendran noted most garments his class makes are designed for a women’s size six or thereabouts. “It was a totally different fit,” he said, adding the dress was kept free of beading and other decorative elements that could have posed choking hazards to the preschoolers. “Prop-wise, there were certain things we just couldn’t

use,” he said. The extra-curricular project added a new element to the Toronto Film School students’ studies. By collaborating on the designs, cutting and sewing, they were given a chance to workshop ideas. “We mostly do independent work, so this was a really good process,” said student Jade Hunter. Their hard work definitely paid off. The preschool-

ers were thrilled when they received and opened the parcel on Monday, Dec. 15. “Their faces just lit up,” said École St. Joseph School assistant principal Rachel Gauthier. “Sometimes, the students write letters and they don’t get anything in return. This was more than they could have expected.”

Big changes are underway at Avenue Nissan. Though the dealership has been in business selling Nissan vehicles in midtown Toronto for more than 30 years, new general manager Ruby Lui wants guests to know this is not the Avenue Nissan customers have known in the past. Lui was appointed the new general manager in October, by the Downtown Automotive Group who took over ownership at the beginning of 2014. Lui brings 14 plus years of automotive retail experience to the dealership. Her background in service, sales and finances means Lui has big plans for the dealership. “What’s most important to me is customer experience. Whether you are buying a car or bringing your vehicle in for service, customers will receive the red carpet treatment,” says Lui. Customers are already praising the changes. Guests will also receive drop off and pick up, and Lui is implementing valet parking in the near future, to ensure everyone gets the red carpet treatment. Avenue Nissan’s three knowledgeable and friendly service advisors take care of customers from beginning to end.

to go up a little bit from there,” he said. Layton said response to both the Bathurst Study and the Bathurst-Bloor study has been positive, as both help to protect the area from development that does not keep in character with the surrounding neighbourhood. “Folks understand what we’re trying to do, and that’s to get out ahead of development,” he said, adding there will be more

The City held a community consultation Dec. 9 at Central Tech School to learn more about the study, and speak with City Planning staff. He compared the cost of the premium rail service to other similar services in the world. As part of the UP fares decision, airport employees will pay $10 if they use the service, and will have the option to buy a monthly pass for $300, which Prichard said would work out to $6.50 a ride if a federal tax credit for transit passes is applied. “Given the fare after the tax credit is added is about the same as for all GO riders on all corridors, this seems principled and fair,” said Prichard. “We’re treating airport employees like we treat regular commuters.”

Metrolinx’s board of directors unanimously approved a fare hike for GO Transit during its quarterly meeting Thursday. The board also agreed to approve proposed fares for the Union Pearson (UP) Express air rail link which begins running in the spring. The move to raise GO fares for 2015 means riders with a Presto card will see an average increase of five per cent, starting in February. Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig justified the increase, the third such hike in the last three years, by pointing to recent service enhancements such as the recent addition of trains for the Milton corridor. “We’re providing more choices, which cost us operating dollars, plus we have other costs going up, and I think people will realize in their day-to-day lives that costs go up and we need to manage them.” Metrolinx board chair Rob Prichard spoke up in defence of UP’s fare structure, introduced Wednesday, which will cost $27.50 for a one-way trip between Union Station and Pearson International Airport; Presto users will pay $19.

TOWN CENTRE LEBOVIC AVE.

With housing and support programs in 14 locations throughout Toronto, the Fred Victor Centre has plenty of work to do in ensuring everyone it serves has a merry Christmas. For the first time, the charitable organization is taking to crowdfunding to help it meet its needs, which include providing holiday meals to some 1,500 people and small gifts to its clients. It has taken to popular online crowdfunding site Indiegogo, reaching out for donations. “We tried (Indiegogo) to see if we could resonate with a younger demographic,” said Fred Victor Centre director of fundraising Dagmar Schroeder. While the organization is looking to raise $20,000 to cover its costs this holiday season, the Indiegogo campaign has a more attainable $5,000 goal. “We didn’t think, for our first time, we should ask for too much,” Schroeder said. “We don’t have the same brand recognition as some missions and other providers who offer these kind of services, so it’s about getting our name out there, too.” Any money raised above and

beyond the $5,000 target will go toward clothing for Fred Victor clients, or to supporting the organization’s shelter services, job training, crisis counselling and other services. The funds will be spread among the various Fred Victor Centre locations, including sites on Queen Street East, Adelaide Street East, Lombard Street, Dawes Road, Mortimer Avenue and Caledonia Road. While the Indiegogo campaign still has a way to go to reach its goal, the organization has been pleased the donations made have come from new donors. Several others have contacted the centre to find out more about it and have spoken highly of the work it does. “Getting from interest and positive comments to donations is the hard part,” Schroeder said. “Still, we’re getting small donations from a lot of new people, which is part of the goal here.” The online campaign runs through Friday, Dec. 26.
