Dundas Street West is looking a little brighter thanks to the work of students at Ryerson Community School. With the help of artist Javid JAH and support from Scadding Court Community Centre and the Ontario Arts Council, a group of youngsters from the school designed a mural that has been affixed to a fence surrounding the schoolyard. Grade 7 student Sidney Ventura said the mural-making process gained steam as it went along. “When it first started, the class was kind of empty, but

when (fellow students) saw what we were doing, they started joining in,” she said. “It took a while to settle on one story, but we started to learn about it and it got easier when we worked on it more.” The students came up with the storyline and drew the images, which were then digitized and printed using Adobe Illustrator. Ventura noted she had never worked on a project like that, but is thrilled to have her idea on display along Dundas Street West. “It’s just really joyful to help out the community,” she said. >>>mural, page 11

While Toronto Community Housing’s revitalization of the Alexandra Park neighbourhood is barely underway, it has already turned some heads. The much-ballyhooed project recently won the Canadian Institute of Planners’ 2014 Award for Planning Excellence in the Neighbourhood Planning category. The 18-acre site, bounded by Dundas Street, Queen Street, Bathurst Street and Spadina Avenue, will see 333 rent-gearedto-income units replaced and

There will also be 1,540 market units, an upgraded and larger community centre, new streets connecting the neighbourhood to the surrounding area, a new public park, added retail and business space and more. he CN Tower has forged many memories over the years, but few so precious as those gained by 38 new Canadians on Thursday, June 26. Coinciding with the tower’s 38th birthday – and Canadian Multiculturalism Day – those 38 men and women were sworn in as Canadian citizens in a small room beneath the downtown landmark. The 38 new Canadians were sworn in by Judge Lillian Ruth Klein, who reminded them that while they have completed their journey to citizenship, their journey as Canadians is just beginning. “Citizenship means immersing yourself in being Canadian; it means working with other Canadians to build a better future,” she said. The new citizens hailed from 20 different countries, and the roads the newlysworn-in Canadians took in securing their citizenship were as diverse as

their backgrounds. “Many of you had a difficult journey to reach this milestone in your life,” Klein said. “We salute your courage.” Deep Bansal first came to Canada from India to attend school seven years ago. “I came as a student with a study permit and then got a work Visa,” he said. “It’s a beautiful country – I love the people here and I like the freedom.” He now works as an engineer and can enjoy the full benefits of citizenship. “It’s a great feeling today; it’s a great joy for me to be Canadian,” he said. Bansal’s path to becoming a Canadian citizen was time-consuming, but

it was certainly less arduous than that travelled by Samira Haibe. She moved from Somalia seven years ago under difficult circumstances. “I came as a refugee and had been living in a refugee camp,” she said. “Canada was a way out and a place to come for a better life and future.” Haibe admitted to having a difficult time adjusting to life in Canada at first, as she faced numerous cultural barriers. “The weather was different, the food was different, everything was different,” she said. “The hardest part was I couldn’t feel more integrated at first because I didn’t speak the language, but then I went to school to learn and I made friends.” After spending seven years here, she is thankful for the opportunity the country has given her by opening its doors in her time of need. “I’m very happy to be here,” she said. “The winters are still so cold, but this is a great place to be.”

Ford wrong to play favourites with media

W

ith Mayor Rob Ford’s return to civic politics after a stay in a rehabilitation facility, we would expect to see some lessons learned and some new attitudes heading into October’s civic election. Ford has been a controversial figure at the best of times, with as colourful a political persona as his private one. It’s all made for curiously divisive leadership for this large, world-class city. But when he begins to hold press conferences, picking and choosing whom he invites from the accredited city hall media gallery, we’re not quite sure he’s learned much during his time away. Surely all news organizations deserve a place at the mayor’s table. Metroland Media Toronto puts close to 500,000 newspapers on Toronto doorsteps every Thursday, with nine newspapers, including The City Centre Mirror. Then there’s our insidetoronto.com website. And we haven’t even mentioned the 100-plus other Metroland newspapers in the province posting the stories we our view tell on their own websites. That’s not a bad household Mayor exludes reach and larger than the citizens when he Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, Toronto Sun and National Post picks favourites distribution combined on that day of the week. But it wasn’t enough to avoid exclusion from the mayor’s first meeting after rehabilitation earlier this week, along with The Canadian Press and NOW magazine and others. We expect sitting politicians and hopeful candidates understand people receive their news and information in a varied number of ways. When you play favourites with the media, you shut the door to opportunity to reach citizens who voted you into office. We really don’t get the point. Surely he might have learned that through his trials and tribulations with the Toronto Star. We sincerely hope Ford’s time in rehabilitation facilities has helped combat his personal issues. Given his comments when returning to Toronto on Monday, he would like you to believe that, too. We’d love to spend the months leading to the next civic election talking about policy and performance and not abuses. But being exclusionary to some media members continued a bad pattern of his prerehab practises and doesn’t create confidence in Ford having changed his practises. The mayor has a chance to hit a reset button. We’re not convinced he is prepared to take advantage of that opportunity.

column

Ford must address his personal record Mayor a long way from being able to boast political achievements

I

t’s hard to know what to make of Rob Ford’s return to office. In the speech he gave in front of a few reporters, Ford started off seeming quite contrite. He spoke of his enlightening experiences in the GreeneStone rehabilitation centre – that he overcame his own penchant for denial and understood his addictions to drugs and alcohol are diseases that will require constant, diligent treatment. He pledged to keep clear of the dangerous and unhealthy associations that have supported his addictions. He even apologized – to Torontonians and city councillors, and especially councillor and mayoral candidate Karen Stintz over remarks he made. And he acknowledged he is not asking for forgiveness.

david nickle the city That was a pretty good first couple of steps on a road heading toward redemption. But as the speech finished up, it was as though he stepped up onto the sidewalk, crossed a parking lot and disappeared down an alley. It became clear quickly that Ford’s speech was an election speech. He spoke of his accomplishments, both real and simply claimed: how the mayor stopped the gravy train, saved money contracting out garbage and saved public anxiety by making the TTC an essential service. A few breaths after saying he was not asking for forgiveness, he announced his intentions

to ask for another mandate, and said he hoped to continue to be mayor for many, many years. And when faced with a barrage of the many questions that still hang over his mayoralty, he packed up his papers and walked off, answering not one of them. Now, to be fair, the mayor’s office and his brother Doug Ford had indicated for some time that the mayor wouldn’t take questions. But a spontaneous answer or two might have gone some way to clearing away the stink of a selfsatisfied stump speech that hung in the mayor’s wake. Given that he didn’t, the mayor might have spent the time talking about those hundreds of millions of dollars he’s saved taxpayers answering

some of the questions he might have anticipated, and apologizing more specifically for his racial, homophobic and sexist slurs. He might have apologized to the city staff that he’s on record as having abused. He might have apologized to Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair. He might have explained himself, in terms other than those that seem drawn from the pages of a recovery self-help book as much as they were from true epiphany. The reality is Rob Ford is a long way from being able to boast about a political record, without first addressing the serious deficit in his personal record.

Mural will hopefully foster a sense of ownership >>>from page 1 The work is displayed on 24 panels along Dundas Street and showcases a dream sequence in vivid colours. “We feel it’s important to animate Dundas Street because this area’s a bit of an eyesore with not much going on,” said Scadding Court executive director Kevin Lee. “Our hope is that this will bring pedestrians into the area from Kensington (Market) and Chinatown.” While the mural is colourful and surreal, it also features some political undertones. At one point, the boy in the series of images stops a “big box” from cutting down a tree – a fitting metaphor given the nearby community’s opposition to big box retail from being built in the area. “It’s mostly about having a little colour along Dundas Street, but you can look at it and see it as being about trying to save the natural environment,” JAH said. “The kid’s trying to stop the Big Box and save the bees, who are out of honey.” Fellow Grade 7 student Joseph Kwon got involved out of a love of art and said the project was rewarding. “I want people walking by to look at this and think it’s cool,” he said. was proud of the work done by his students, adding the school is always happy to pitch in to make the community a better place. He noted that, in addition to adding splashes of colour along Dundas Street West, the mural will hopefully foster a sense of ownership among the young people within the community. “It’s good to give kids a chance to express themselves, and murals give them a chance to do graffiti art instead of just tagging,” he said.

“As long as the kids say positive things in their artwork, it’s a nice thing for the community to look at, and it’s maybe a lesson for adults, too, about staying positive.” The mural was installed on Thursday, June 26 on a temporary basis until it could be properly treated to ensure it would last through inclement weather. While it was installed facing Dundas, similar panels will soon be installed facing the school so the students can enjoy the artwork as well.

At 110 years old, Ramsden Park is coming ever closer to receiving a much-needed revitalization. Plans to upgrade the 13.7acre park, located just across Yonge Street from Rosedale subway station, have been in the works for some time, with stakeholder meetings on the matter taking place as early as February of this year. A series of public walks through the park have brought local residents, stakeholders and members of PMA Landscape Architects together to discuss the future of the green space. Suggestions thus far have ranged from improving the appearance of Ramsden Park lane and improving entryways to the park to implementing measures to separate pedes-

trian and cyclist paths to potentially adding play features for children. Ramsden Park also features tennis courts and a separated area for dogs. “There are a lot of things being discussed, but our main concern is bringing it up to City of Toronto parks and rec department standards,” said Dan Connolly of the City of Toronto. “The park’s in a state of disrepair, so it needs an overhaul, for sure.” “Some people want to make changes to the tennis courts, some want new walkways and new gateways and landscape features.” Other suggestions include lighting near the Hillsboro Lookout to discourage loitering, improving drainage and upgrading the derelict baseball diamond. Connolly noted the public consultation process has been

thorough, with residents consulted from the outset and given opportunities to offer their feedback on preliminary designs. Another public meeting has been set for Monday, July 7, during which residents can offer still more input on possible designs. “This was going to be the final meeting, but now we’ll be getting more comments and feedback,” Connolly said. The city has secured $4 million for the revitalization through its capital budget and developer fees, and work on the park would be expected to be completed by the end of 2016 at the latest. The upcoming public meeting will take place at Belmont House, 55 Belmont St., from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday.

Project leans on lessons from Regent Park revitalization >>>from page 1 “The Regent Park lessons would be a long list,” said Toronto Community Housing interim president and CEO Greg Spearn. “The key difference with Alexandra Park is that it’s a much smaller community and it’s surrounded by some great neighbourhoods in Kensington Market, Queen West and Chinatown.” One of the biggest criticisms of the Regent Park Revitalization was the fact that many residents were moved out of the community as work went on. With Alexandra Park, Toronto Community Housing has enough properties to ensure residents will be able to remain at home throughout the multi-phase revitalization process. “The residents of Alexandra Park said to us they wanted the right to stay,” Spearn said. “They

The residents of Alexandra Park said to us they wanted the right to stay. They wanted zero displacements – Greg Spearn

wanted zero displacements – we wanted to make it so they didn’t have to leave if they didn’t want to and we planned accordingly.” To facilitate that, some of the current buildings in the area will be upgraded instead of rebuilt from scratch. The first phase of the revitalization is expected to take four to five years to complete and will include 61 rent-geared-to-income townhomes and two market condominiums. “There have been enough

presales (of condo units) to go ahead,” Spearn said. As with Regent Park, the revitalization will see new ser vices and amenities brought in, a more diverse mix of residents and better integration with the surrounding area. “It’s a combination of working with the (Atkinson) co-op, keeping some buildings and finding a way to knit that community with the surrounding community,” Spearn said. The Canadian Institute of Planners award recognizes the work being done by Toronto Community Housing and development partner Tridel, in cooperation with the Atkinson Co-op. The awards recognize planning projects based on a variety of criteria, including excellence, innovation and potential for implementation.
