More public input for Ramsden Park upgrade JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Residents in the area around Ramsden Park had a chance to chime in on the park’s future at a public meeting held at Belmont House on Monday. The meeting, hosted by councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam and facilitated by community organizer and park advocate Jane Farrow, featured a presen-

tation by Fung Lee and Leslie Morton of PMA Landscape Architects. Lee and Morton offered a comprehensive overview of suggestions for the park, with those in attendance offering mostly positive feedback along with some concerns and disagreements with the plan. Wong-Tam noted the $4-million plan to upgrade the park was needed.

“There’s no doubt in my mind Ramsden Park is a very heavilyused recreational park,” she said. “At this point in time, we’re going to enhance the amenities that we have.” To start the presentation, Lee discussed the possibility of the Yonge Street entrance to the park. Currently delineated with nothing more than a City of Toronto sign, feedback gleaned from residents throughout the

ongoing consultation process suggested more was in order. “What we’ve heard is that Yonge Street should reflect the Ramsden Park identity,” Lee said. “It should (feature) landmark urban landscape that introduces the park as well.” To that end, PMA is suggesting what the firm calls a “linear plaza.” The park entrance would feature signage harkening back >>>fourth, page 10

Former Toronto diversity officer and longtime Ward 20 activist Ceta Ramkhalawansingh is the new city councillor for Trinity-Spadina, following a second-ballot win at Toronto council’s special meeting to fill that vacant seat and one other on Monday. Ramkhalawansingh received 22 votes on the second ballot over former Edmonton police chief Robert Lunney, who finished with 18 votes. “I am relieved after a long morning of balloting and listening to everybody’s speeches,” said Ramkhalawansingh, who was among 29 hopefuls for the job of interim councillor in Ward 20. The seat was vacated by Adam Vaughan last month to run – successfully – in the June 30 Trinity-Spadina byelection. Ramkhalawansingh is a 43-year resident of the ward, having come to Canada in 1967 along with her family. Until four years ago, she was the city’s diversity manager of community engagement, and since then she’s been doing volunteer work on municipal issues and on ward matters. She came to the council meeting with endorsements from various community leaders, and >>>endorsed, page 2

>>>from page 1 an endorsement letter from the Harbord Village Residents Association. She said her decision to apply for the appointment, which expires after the Oct. 27 election, came from encouragement in the community. “I was asked by the people that I worked with for the last 20 or 30 years, the other residents group in the ward, I was asked whether I would consider doing this,” she said. “I talked to a lot of them and agreed to do it.” She said she intends to work strictly as a caretaker councillor, dealing with the many development issues in the ward. But when asked whether she would stay out of the politics of city hall, she said that wasn’t likely. “I don’t know how you can

As long as the mayor supports the issues in Ward 20, I’ll be satisfied with that.” Prior to the appointment, Ward 19 (Trinity-Spadina) Councillor Mike Layton had been taking on much of the ward work in Ward 20. He said he’ll be glad for the help. “I don’t know about you, but I only have 24 hours in a day,” he said. “Six are spent sleeping and the rest are spent helping the residents of Ward 19. Ward 20 needs a representative and we made the right choice.”

Trinity-Spadina residents turned their riding from orange to red, electing Liberal Adam Vaughan to replace outgoing NDP MP Olivia Chow. Vaughan took to the stage last week and thanked his parents for their inspiration. “My mom’s hard work wore off on me; my father who served on city council...always believed that ideas can change the world,” he said. The newly-elected MP emphasized his desire to focus on building housing, building transit, and reinvesting in cities. Vaughan pointed to the residents of Alexandra Park as a model group for community-building. “City of Toronto could use a lot more of Alex Park; Alex Park could use a little more from the City of Toronto,” said Vaughan, vowing to fight for the community in Parliament. Vaughan, who has represented a portion of the riding for the past eight years at City Council, outpaced his closest challenger, New Democrat Joe Cressy from the beginning. The victor, whose pre-political career included work as a broadcast journalist with both CityTV and the CBC, was known as a vocal critic of

Mayor Rob Ford on Toronto’s council. Vaughan has a long history in Trinity-Spadina, from his school days in the Annex to his current life as a father of two living in the Trinity-Bellwoods area. The race was positioned as a two-candidate battle between Vaughan and Cressy since it started. The June 30 byelection win followed a trend begun earlier in the month when Liberal Han Dong defeated NDP incumbent Rosario Marchese to win the provincial seat in Trinity-Spadina. Dong, who introduced Vaughan said, “No more excuses, no more strategic voting, we flat-out beat them

(NDP). I am so excited that now I will be working hand-inhand with the best representative for this community.” Surrounded by supporters at a jubilant victory party at the Steam Whistle Brewing Company, Vaughan credited the young Liberals, first and foremost for his success in the campaign. “It was your hard work, day in day out, door by door, voter by voter, conversation by conservation,” said Vaughan, who also credited both new and old Liberals. Vaughan was joined on stage by Liberal Party of Canada leader Justin Trudeau, who said, “This man, right here, is the full package.” “Canadians voted tonight for the kind of team that we’re going to be building for the 2015 election. We need not just a different government in Ottawa, we need a better government in Ottawa.” Vaughan returns the riding to Liberal hands. It has alternated between NDP orange and Liberal red since it was formed in 1988, with New Democrat Dan Heap representing the area from 1988 to 1993, followed by Liberal Tony Ianno from 1993 to 2006 and new Democrat Olivia Chow from 2006 to 2014. Chow left her position in the spring to run for mayor of Toronto.

Monks make colourful sand creations

Swept away: Tibetan monks create a sacred Chenrezig Mandala (sand mandala) at Harbourfront Centre Sunday afternoon. Taking several days to create, it was eventually destroyed to symbolize that all things in life, no matter how beautiful, eventually come to an end. Among the Tibetan arts, painting with coloured sand ranks as one of the most unique and exquisite.

Percussion grad Christa Mercey doesn’t miss a beat Her new gig with Cirque du Soleil is slated to open in Toronto’s port lands Aug. 28 JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com After years of performing in different groups and collectives, University of Toronto percussion performance graduate Christa Mercey has run away to join the circus. Mercey is playing the role of Bella Donna in Cirque du Soleil’s Kurios: Cabinet of Curiosities, which is currently underway in Montreal and coming to Toronto in August. The performer takes part in the show’s opening act as part of a percussion ensemble. That act mixes in juggling, though Mercey sticks to her forte. “I stick to percussion,” she said. “I play around with (juggling) backstage, but I drop a lot of things, so it’s best I don’t do that on stage.” Her casting in Kurios marks a first step into the Cirque world, one Mercey first sought to join a

few years ago. “I did an online audition and got a note that I’d been put onto the roster but that there were no jobs at that time,” she recalled. “Last May, a talent scout called and asked if I would like to be part of it. I did some video auditions and finally got the role.” While percussionists are often found in the background in many performances, Mercey’s experience has been far different. After graduating from U of T, she did some performing with the TorQ Percussion Quartet, where the performers all take on key roles. She has also performed with Scrap Arts Music, an orchestra known for its work with invented instruments. She credited her time with Scrap Arts in particular with helping her bolster her on-stage charisma. “That’s where I really learned

about character and how to bring myself out to the audience,” she said. The percussionist was immersed in music all her life – her father was part of the award-winning band

the Mercey Brothers and her entire family played some form of music. While she can play a number of instruments, she has focused on percussion throughout her career. She has released an EP titled

‘Floorboards’ on which she plays both percussion and ukulele. Despite her copious experience, Kurios has forced her to work in new and sometimes unexpected ways. “I studied classically, so it’s kind of set in front of you exactly what to do (in a performance,)” she said. “With Cirque, you rely on your classical and performance training, but you have to be on your toes all the time. “Things happen on stage that don’t happen every night, or don’t happen in the same place every night, so you have to be ready to adapt at a moment’s notice.” Though she admits her first performance with Cirque has been a learning experience, Mercey said she hopes to continue working with the acclaimed organization. “I’d like to see where this takes me because it’s been really fun so far,” she said. Kurios’ Toronto run will begin in the Port Lands on Aug. 28.

T

he World Cup of Soccer ends this weekend with the championship and third-place matches. And while the 2014 version has already provided plenty of heart-stopping action for soccer fans, let’s hope this event has planted the seeds for a lasting legacy in Toronto’s communities. The event may have been hosted in Brazil, but the World Cup has a significant impact in a city as diverse as Toronto (where nearly half the residents speak a language at home other than English). The World Cup is a true spectacle, and not just for fans of the two remaining teams vying for the championSunday. Whether it’s been by our view ship meeting new people out to watch a game at a local establishment, Helped forge or having the opportunity to learn about another country and deep lasting more its culture, Torontonians are witconnections nessing a unique opportunity for community building. Events that enable citizens from diverse backgrounds to gather together often help forge deep lasting connections. And that’s not all. Sports events like these inspire stars of the next generation. In that, the World Cup is no different than the Stanley Cup or the World Series. And there’s definitely value to a community in a less competitive vein – the benefits of regular physical activity for our youth: soccer can be an outlet for that. And compared to other sports, soccer is relatively affordable. We’ve recently profiled a number of local soccer organizations in the city that aim to benefit from the exposure the World Cup has brought. Visit our website at www.insidetoronto.com/ worldcupTO to read those stories and all other coverage we’ve compiled on the World Cup and the 32 teams participating. Finally, those of us still craving international sporting competition after watching the World Cup don’t have long to wait and have the opportunity to experience the competition live. The FIFA Under-20 women’s soccer championships are being hosted in Canada later this summer, Aug. 5 to 24. A number of games will be in Toronto at BMO Field. Two of Canada’s three games in the tournament’s group stage are here in Toronto.

Dirty deeds in 2014 mayoral campaign? Is it going to get dirty this mayoral campaign? That’s what Doug Ford suggested Tuesday as he told reporters he believed a rival political campaign might be responsible for smashing a window in his SUV outside his Etobicoke home the previous night. That morning, a group of bare-chested protesters made a show of themselves behind Doug’s brother, Mayor Rob Ford, as he gamely bulldozed through a speech highlighting possible traffic woes. This Passion of the Fords’ narrative was upended somewhat when Citytv uploaded video showing a police officer chiding Ford’s sobriety coach for apparently kicking one of the protesters. That protester, a 52-yearold Scarborough housing consultant with the name of John Furr, confirmed in an interview he had indeed been kicked, and added he was surprised when a

david nickle the city police officer said it was Ford’s coach who’d done the alleged deed. Furr said that from the force of the kick, it felt more like “a two-year-old.” No charges were laid in the incident. Furr has also made clear he is not part of a mayoral campaign. The jury is still out on Doug Ford’s speculative allegation that someone associated with the election smashed his car window in the middle of the night. But Doug Ford is correct in saying things are getting if not dirty, then extremely ugly following Rob Ford’s return. Rob Ford’s half-hearted attempt at a mea-culpa fell flat – at least so far as the polls are concerned. The mayor still has supporters – he was

given a hero’s welcome at the Caribbean Carnival launch Tuesday, and on Monday was cheered on by an entourage of T-shirtwearing supporters – his detractors seem to have both multiplied and intensified. Inchoate rage They have moved from fascinated disapproval to inchoate rage over the time of his absence. East York school teacher Joe Killoran, who offered Mayor Ford a blistering, bare-chested rebuke as he joined a Canada Day parade, has become a poster boy for this nouveau fury. Tommy Lenathen, a longtime city employee from Scarborough, is the equivalent to Doug Ford, as he came to city hall to excoriate the Ward 2 councillor for his remarks in The Etobicoke Guardian about autistic children.

It may, one supposes, emerge that these two and also the crowd of anti-Ford protesters who’ve been sitting vigil outside the mayor’s office are political operatives for one campaign or another. It is more likely, however, the people who are shouting over the mayor’s speeches and calling his brother a bigot are responding with genuine anger – at the racism, sexism, homophobia and lewdness the mayor has expressed – that is not so much motivated as it is provoked. Have they crossed a line, these protesters, in doing so? Of course they have. As we trudge through the waning of Rob Ford’s 2010-2014 term of office, that line is so far behind us we wouldn’t recognize it if we saw it.

OPEN HOUSE SATURDAY, JULY 12TH 1-3 PM ry

She was so mad!” The downtown resident said she feels taking part in a 32-kilometre walk is the least she can do for her sister, as well as for others who are battling cancer. She is nearing her minimum fundraising goal of $1,250, thanks in large part to a push over the past few weeks. “It takes a lot of money just to do a little bit of research, so the more money raised, the more of a difference we can make,” she said. “It’s about being part of something bigger than yourself, and even if you save just one life, it’s worth it.” Goddard and the other walkers are taking part in the 30-day challenge, a monthlong push to boost fundraising numbers, which ends Saturday. The Weekend to End Women’s Cancers takes place on Sept. 6 and 7.

nd

Some four years after her sister lost a battle with cancer at the age of 42, downtown Toronto resident Deborah Goddard is committed to ensuring others have a better chance against the illness. Goddard is taking part in the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers this fall, raising funds in support of research, treatment and care for women’s cancers at the Princess Margaret Hospital. “I participated for the first time last year and after doing it, I thought ‘everyone has to do this at least once,’” Goddard said. “There’s a point where everyone gets together and holds hands and I just lost it. You could really feel everyone who was there with you and everyone who wasn’t (after losing a battle to cancer.)” Goddard’s sister, Heather, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2007, and battled the disease for two years before

dying. Heather had been living in Detroit after marrying an American, but had to return to Canada and live with her brother in Montreal because the cost of treatment was prohibitive in the U.S. “She wasn’t even going to get treatment, but her children said ‘Mom, we need you,’” Goddard said. “No one should have to go through this, and I hope the (Weekend to End Women’s Cancers) can make a difference so people don’t have to.” While the two sisters were living in different cities while Heather was battling cancer, they remained close. Goddard recalled one incident in particular regarding her strongwilled sister. “She always had very straight hair, but when she got sick, she made the decision to shave it so she could feel like she had some control over some part of what was happening,” Goddard said. “When it grew back, it came back really thick and curly.

Fourth public meeting will be planned for Ramsden Park Revitalization >>>from page 1 to the area’s industrial history, special furnishings and paving treatments and an amphitheatre just down the hill with seating stretching down the slope. Lee said the amphitheatre could host any manner of events. “We heard about (the idea of) an outdoor movie theatre with movie nights in the park,” she said. “We heard the BIA

might be interested in holding events here as well.” While many in attendance expressed enthusiasm for the idea, some expressed concerns over ambient noise and were opposed to the relocation of trees in the area, which would have been necessary to make way for the amphitheatre. Other entrances would also be enhanced through signage, improved paths and enhanced lighting.

“We do want flowering and lovely plants, but we’re looking at doing (plant) massings at the entryways, and flowering trees,” Morton said. “We want them to be beautiful, but lowmaintenance.” Further into the park, Morton outlined plans for an enhanced play plateau replete with wooden terraces and junior and senior play areas, among other features. She noted the junior play

area would have “swings where (the park) currently has swings – which will be replaced if necessary – and then little movement rides like spinner bowls and seesaws.” The senior play area would feature concrete table tennis tables among other features, and the play area as a whole would feature seating and a planted berm to ensure offleash dogs do not disrupt

children and youths at play. Other existing park features would also be enhanced, from the resurfacing of tennis courts, replaced fencing, the addition of seating between tennis courts for players awaiting their turn and the possible addition of a multiuse court. The decrepit baseball diamond would also be reoriented and enhanced. Monday’s meeting was

the third public meeting regarding the Ramsden Park Revitalization. While it was expected to be the final such gathering, the timeline has been extended. “We’ll be having a fourth meeting,” Farrow said. “Because it’s a very large park...it’s been extended by one session.”

Little Kickers aims to provide positive introduction to sports CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com The next generation of soccer players to play for the Canadian national team may be practising their basic skills on a field near you. Little Kickers aims to provide a positive introduction to sports for kids 18 months to seven. “We get children at such a young age group, we have to teach them in a different manner,” said Frank Stanschus, managing director of Little Kickers, which was launched in 2002 by his wife Christine in the United Kingdom. The organization has since grown with more than 200 franchises in 16 countries and several in the GTA including downtown Toronto. Stanschus sees the sport of soccer gaining popularity with children in this country.

Alex Li Wan Po works on his shot under the watchful eye of coach Eva Huang during the Little Kickers soccer program at the St. Catherine Catholic School field.

While local soccer leagues exist within the city, Stanschus said Little Kickers’s focus is to provide skill-based programs by trained professionals in the community where kids live. “The idea of what we do is that we want to be part of the local community,” he said. “We’d rather come into the community and don’t have (kids) travel forever to

play.” With the Women’s World Cup tournament taking place next year in Canada, the sport should remain in the public eye. “If you start at an early age and you love it, then you’re going to love it for life,” Stanschus said.

Don Was Here explores historical path of lower Don River

“

JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A unique and interactive urban intervention project is giving people the chance to retrace the original route of the lower Don River. Don Was Here, curated by Cabbagetown-based Labspace Studio, is one of several projects commissioned for the inaugural No. 9 Eco-Art Festival at Todmorden Mills, 67 Pottery Rd., which runs until Sept. 21. The free outdoor summer art festival offers free concerts, as well as seven eco-art installations that respond to the history of Todmorden Mills and the Don Valley. Don Was Here is the only installation that goes outside the direct Todmorden Mills area. “The festival is centralized around Todmorden Mills, but the organizers wanted something that was outside of Todmorden Mills to draw people in, said John Loerchner, Labspace Studio’s co-director/curator. Don Was Here does just that, he said, as it essentially tags and retraces the historical

It’s important to make people more aware of (the Don’s) history and conscious of the decisions we make for the future. – John Loerchner

route of the old Don River along the Lower Don Valley pathway. Using historical data to accurately determine where the lower Don River originally flowed, Labspace Studio has created and placed several ‘Don Was Here’ tags along the bike path from Lake Shore Boulevard East up to Todmorden Mills.

“We found the map data intriguing to see how different the river was. ‌ Even today, the Don River is an important waterway that still plays an important role in our lives,â€? Loerchner said, adding Labspace Studio is all about creating installations that help people have a new perspectives on the spaces where they live and play. “It’s important to make people more aware of its history and conscious of the decisions we make for the future.â€? Participants are encouraged to visit www.donwashere.com to view maps of the historical pathways of the Don River, peruse old photographs and tag, tweet and pin their own photos and comments on their self-guided walk.

Don Was Here, which is made possible through a partnership with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, will also include two walking tours that explore the changing face of Toronto’s Don River Valley and the relationship between the river, the valley, and the city that developed alongside and around it. Historian Jennifer Bonnell will lead the first walk Saturday from 11:30 to 1 p.m. An assistant professor of Canadian and environmental history at McMaster University, Bonnell is the author of Reclaiming the Don: An Environmental History of Toronto’s Don River Valley as well as the co-developer (with University of Toronto Map and GIS librarian Marcel Fortin) of the Don Valley Historical Mapping Project.

Lost River Walks founder Helen Mills will lead the second Don Was Here walk Saturday, Sept. 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. A program of the Toronto Green Community, the Lost River Walk groups has worked for the last 18 years to name and map dozens of lost creeks. The group has also accumulated an on- and offline archive of information about lost rivers, as well as creating the Thirsty City Guides to water issues in the city; and developed the Lost Rivers Walks, storytelling tours of the city’s buried creeks. Both tours will begin in front of Todmorden Mills and end at Riverdale Park.

Plaques recognize waterway

Heritage Toronto, in partnership with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) and Waterfront Toronto, recently honoured the downtown east river’s cultural and historical significance by unveiling two heritage plaques; one of which recognizes the straightening of the lower Don River between 1886 and 1892 and the other which commemorates the historic lower Don River railway crossing.

“It’s quite a remarkable story here, said Ward 28 Councillor Pam McConnell during the plaque unveiling event late last month on the western bank of the lower Don River, just north of the railway bridge, at the Bala Underpass.
